Re: From Lori RE: [QUAD-L] Potassium

2007-09-10 Thread delimited4

Dear Lori,

I use vitamin C to ramp up bladder acidity. I don't have an indwelling catheter
but it still makes me feel better even at 1 gram per day. With an indwelling
cath I took 4 grams and mandelamine and had very few infections.

Someone said it combines to create formaldehide in the bladder. I don't know if
its true. It does make daily vitamins and minerals work better.

W, please post the following to the list if you would:

Being VERY low on potassium is a dangerous thing.  Besides sodium, it is the
second positive ion in the body and extremely important for many of the vital
organs.

In 1997 when I got bronchitis… because I had such a hard time coughing …I was
using my albuterol inhaler many many times a day.  I finally had to go to the
emergency room to get an x-ray to rule out and ammonia.  As I was in the x-ray
room… a nurse came running in with two of the biggest pills I had ever seen in
my life (and by then I had seen plenty) saying that I had to take them right
away.  I asked her why and she told me that my blood work had just come back
and I was very low on potassium.

I guess it scares them so much that they could not even wait until the x-ray
was finished!

On another potassium related topic… I just had the strangest thing happen to me
less than a year ago.  I had been battling constant urinary tract infections
for years and finally had some big boulders removed from the bladder itself a
year ago this past May.  My doctor and I thought that would solve the problem.
Unfortunately, I kept having chronic UTIs.

Someone here had suggested the medication Mandelamine (I think it was) as
sort of a prophylactic against UTIs.  Anyway, one day my husband and I were
reading about the medication on one particular site and on that one site… a
paragraph glared at us.  It said that one could not take this medication if
they could not get their urine pH to stay at a 6 or lower.  More acidic in
other words.   Up till then I could not get my urine pH at that ideal number by
trying cranberry juice, cranberry supplements, etc. etc. to get it that way.
The more acidic the urine… the last chance for bugs to grow.  I have always
known that.

Anyway, I had been eating a banana every single day for a long long time.  My
husband boinked himself on the forehead with the palm of his hand as he read
that paragraph.  To make a long story short… I stopped eating the bananas and I
have not had a bladder infection since!  Along with keeping my urine Ph around
the ideal number  6.

Who would ever have thought that too many bananas could contribute to increased
bladder infections?  But, when you do some in-depth reading about potassium… it
talks a lot about potassium and the role it plays with kidney function, etc.
etc…  I told my urologist and she was also glad that we found an answer to my
problem that had plagued me for almost 7 years.

That is the second time that the Internet has helped me more than greatly when
even the doctors were without answers.  I love the program Mystery Diagnosis
on the Discovery Health Channel.  It portrays what had happened to me so many
times over the years… having all kinds of symptoms and the doctors can help you
either because of laziness or incompetence.

The more you know…  :-)

Re: [QUAD-L] voc.rehab

2007-08-12 Thread delimited4

I don't think you can judge a state agency by the quality of its politicians.
The problem that is inherent with many state agencies is that most operate like
a company that is run by a union. there isn't really any incentive for them to
improve. It is like public schools with the vice president of the teachers
union?is elected as president of the school board. It becomes a great place to
work but don't expect the children to read. One of Ohio's elementary schools
had 64% of the children on behavior modification drugs. The private school
in?the same area only had 2%. I'm sure that many counselors at VR help a lot of
people, but when they get a quad?as a client, they have to actually work.??
What I'm suggesting is that counselors be rated for competency, or lack
thereof. I've heard the same stories about the same counselors over the years.
I honestly don't believe Ohio's BVR would survive close scrutiny of how they
spend there funding. I know their union would prevent them from being fired,
but they can't do anything if a few are reassigned to more suitable jobs, say,
repairing potholes.

It is true that we don't know what your financial situation is. You might try
calling your local independant living center. They can often help and give

You can attach night drain bags together. Just put the in line to the out
line. Let them both hang on the side. Don't forget to open the clip so the
urine can go into bag #2. As the bag fills it drains into bag #2.

Has anyone come up with a solution for not having to empty the urine too
often?  I use a 4000 CC bag, but if I go to bed around, let's say, 11 p.m. and
my caregiver doesn't come and until 11 a.m., there is a good chance it might be
completely full.  I seem to drain a lot while I am lying down.  My doctor told
me if I sleep at 30° this will help stop the problem, but I haven't really seen
a difference yet.

In case you're going to ask, I have been checked for diabetes and renal
problems, but everything comes back hunky-dory.  I occasionally stayed on
Sundays so I can give my primary caregivers the day off and on these days my
parents come in and during the year and around noon.  When my brother makes
around later in the evening, I have around 3000 cc in the bag even though I
have only taken in about 1000 cc.

A tilt chair does let you reduce preasure and get off it a little. You need
to tilt every half hour or more if you can. I don't know what your using on the
wound, but it can be tricky to get a sore to heal and still get in the chair
everyday. I'd say it is worth it but I'd talk to a Dr. at a wound care center
or a Dr. that specializes in wound care.

Re: [QUAD-L] Steve

2007-06-16 Thread delimited4

A lot of people believe a wound will only heal if you lay in bed awkwardly
turning and never letting any pressure on it until it is gone. Clean wounds can
often heal rather quickly after debrieding. I've had a clean wound heal in
three months using trypsin. I didn't miss anytime in the chair.

Let your doctor know that you would like to keep your job while healing it. Be
careful not to sit on wrinkles and the roho isn't meant to raise you up in your
chair. You should be immersed in it. I've seen some of the air mattresses over
inflated too. They don't work the way you want if you don't sink into them
some.

It takes about 20 minutes to destroy the skin tissue from pressure. You need to
be a little obsessive about avoiding sores. Once you have a sore, it can be a
few weeks before all the dead tissue falls off or you get it off and you see
how bad your hurt. Once it appears healed, treat it like a wound for another 4
- 6 months. New skin is real easy to damage.

I wish I could brag that I never get them, but I do. Living with them seems to
be the trick. Don't let it depress you and if you feel depressed, tell your
doctor that too.

good luck

john

William,

If you have been battling a substantial pressure sore for nearly four years,
a tilt chair cannot hurt and may very well help, but I don't see how you can
expect any long term healing without staying off the wound until it is
completely healed. As others have pointed out, your wound could be far worse
internally than what you can see on the surface, and you may be risking more
serious consequences. Being relegated to bed for several weeks or even
months is a dismal prospect, but time invested now should result in long
term positive benefits. Think of what a relief it would be not having to
continually care for your wound and worry about how much time you are
spending in your chair.

I wish you luck,

Steve

state in the middle east. oops! guess that agreement was a pile of lies. I'm
very aware that most muslim states only put up with America. It makes little
difference if they are bathist or shia or sunni. They aren't ready for ww3. If
Saddam took saudi arabia it wouldn't bother me. We could have promised to stay
out of it as long as we get tankers at $7 per barrel. Saddam would have jumped
at it and some insane saudis would have crashed jets into him and murdered his
family.

The saudi royal family is a joke as is the amir of kuwait. A hundred years ago
they were nothing but bedouin looking for a stranger in the desert to murder.
There isn't a country over there that is worth the lives of one American
soldier. America can hurt them all badly by becoming oil independant. Let them
eat their oil.
Osama would never of thought about attacking the US if we had just left it
alone. In fact, Saddam probably would have wiped out his family. Iran would be
peeing in its pants worrying about another war with Iraq. If he turned on
Israel, they would have nuked him. The Bushes have what they believe are
friends in the middle east. The rest of America doesn't!
We could have been so happy if we had never sent any military into that hell
hole. We could have built an entire industry based on not replacing oil. It is
going to run out anyway.

I know that you probably will never agree with me, but I honestly believe
America is much better off forcing them to try to please us than we are trying
to make that miserable bunch happy.

Hope your summer ROCKS,

john

P.S. If it were up to me, I'd pull every American soldier back to a position
near Basra and Turkey to make sure we get reciepts for the oil sales and let
them have their civil war. If the outcome is unacceptable, we just remove
another regime untill they get it right. In the meantime, we get Osama and drag
him down broadway in his undies before we give him a fair trial and hang him
from whatever building replaces the World Trade Center.

We didn't start WWIII, they did.

More-over, had we not removed Sadamn from Kuwait, the middle east

The big picture isn't pretty, but leaving Iraq with its terrorist

Sorry to add to this burgeoning topic, but I often have problems with this
also, but it is usually something that I have eaten.  I had a tremendous amount
of problems with my bowels constantly being irritated and tremendous amounts of
gas about two years ago.  In fact, it was so bad I was becoming somewhat
depressed.  I ended up seeing a psychotherapist and he suggested that I keep a
food journal and speak with the VA dietitian.  Using my food journal, the
dietitian quickly identified most of my problems as being more lactose
intolerant than I had previously believed and taking in too much fiber at one
time.

I really think seeing a dietitian and having a food journal in hand might solve
plenty of your problems.  I use lactose tablets in order to eat anything with
dairy and I also use Beano whenever I eat something that causes gas normally
(beans).  This has helped considerably.  My dietitian told me these are enzymes
with help the digestive system work better.  I have also started using
probiotics (found in yogurt) and I've even found some tablets so I don't have
to eat a tub of yogurt per day.

Re: [QUAD-L] NEW CHAIR

2007-05-23 Thread delimited4

Ok, osama bin Laden is a member of the Bin Laden family which runs a
multi-billion dollar engineering company. They built and designed all the saudi
palaces and Bin Laden's daddy is very close t the Saudi royal family and Bin
Laden has worked all over the world building mosques, roads and pipelines.

We never sold poison gas to any country! The US has been destroying poison gas
and biological weapons unilaterally since 1971. We have sold nuclear weapons to
the UK.

I personally don't believe Osama was responsible for the WTC. He isn't that
smart. With that said, I think he knew about it and it was an al qiada
operation. He is guilty by asociation but it wasn't his idea and he was merely
kept aware that an attack of some kind was to take place. Inteligence says
there were to be 12 jets hijacked that day. The hijackers were mostly Saudi,
Kuwaiti, and Egyptian. No Iraqi's were involved. In fact, Al qiada in Iraq was
operated by a Jordanian. He is dead and it is now run by an Egyptian.
In 1991 America sent 400,000 troops into Saudi Arabia. This is a country that
beheads people for violating the Quran. It is considered by many Muslims to be
holy ground. Christians are tolerated as embassadors and expected to behave
with respect toward Muslim laws and not draw attention to themselves. Many
Muslims, even moderates, felt there was no reason to have so many infidels in
their holy land. They blame the Royal Family as much as they bame America for
this violation. Most would have rather seen Saddam replace the royal family. Wy
were we there? Was it our place to save muslims from muslims? How would
catholics feel if Osama sent a bodyguard for the pope and dismissed his
security people? Its a religous and emotonal hornets nest we stirred up. When
the war was over, Americans didn't go home. We kept over 100,000 infidels in
Saudi Arabia. We have managed to offend the sensibilities of the entire muslim
world. Most muslims think we only went to Saudi Arabia to test our weapons on
muslims and steal oil. Can a billion muslims all be wrong?

Lower the air preasure in your van tires to 28 lbs.(don't drive fast with tires
mildly deflated and they will wear faster) or replace your shock absorbers with
the cheap shocks. You can even lower tire preasure on your wheelchair to get a
more comfortable ride. I like when whoever is driving goes slow.  If a
permobile is bouncing, it may have the frame over torqued. Try to find another
DME to get your new chair through. 3 1/2 years is just incompetance.

I started the process of getting a new chair about 3 1/2 years ago and finally
gave up when they could not get the Invacare they ordered for me to fit me
properly.  It is just darn near impossible to get the Invacare vendors to do
what they say they will.  I have also given up on the idea that Peachtree will
come out with a headdress that is close to the one be used to produce.  I
happen to see a young man driving a Permobile using a chin control (with one of
those new, less cumbersome bibs) and he was able to function real well.  The
reason I paid attention to him is because he is extremely active like I am and
has about the exact same return.

Since I have come to the realization that I will have to go to a different
drive system (no more Peachtree), I am leaning toward the new small chin
control with the bib.  I have heard that Permobiles bounce around in the van
almost uncontrollably.  Does anyone have any experience with this problem?  The
young man I talked to said he didn't have that problem, but he may just be
accustomed to it.  I used to think it was normal for me to bounce around in my
Van, but I later learned that if I sat upright (that is of course if my blood
pressure would let me) I rode much more comfortably.

Thanks for the input.

Plan to 'chip' Alzheimer's patients causes protest 19 May 2007
NewScientist.com news service Celeste BieverIT LOOKS deceptively familiar.
The patient rolls up his sleeve, the doctor sticks a needle into his arm,
and soon it's all over. But this is no routine vaccination. Instead, the
patient has been injected with a fleck of silicon that will uniquely
identify him when zapped with radio waves. Now, nearly three years after their
use was approved by the US Food and Drug Administration,
implantable radio frequency identification (RFID) chips are the focus of a
new controversy. The battle lines are being drawn in a quiet corner of West
Palm Beach, Florida. On 12 May, some 30 protesters held an inter-faith
prayer vigil (pictured above) outside Alzheimer's Community Care, a day-care
facility for people with dementia. At issue is the facility's plan to
implant 200 patients with microchips manufactured and donated by VeriChip of
nearby Delray Beach. When scanned, the chip reveals a unique ID number,
which when entered into a password-protected database gives access to medical
information about its owner. If the plan goes ahead, it will be the first
time the technology has been tried on a group of people with a specific
mental impairment. The forgetfulness that comes with Alzheimer's can make it
impossible for people with the condition to pass on vital information
when faced with a medical emergency, which is why advocates are keen to
make use of RFID chips with this group. If for whatever reason - an
automobile accident or hurricane - the person becomes separated from their
loved one, they are totally, totally helpless. They can't share what
medically is wrong with them, says Mary Barnes of Alzheimer's Community
Care. This could be a safety net.Privacy advocates say that it is
precisely this helplessness that makes the proposed use of the tags
unacceptable. This is a community that is not in a position to give fully
informed consent or to say no, says Katherine Albrecht of CASPIAN, an
Internet-based consumer rights organisation. The nature of the disease is that
they can't fully understand.Albrecht likens the violent and invasive
act of implanting a chip in someone who does not have the ability to
consent to the act of rape. Others agree with the
sentiment, if not the comparison. This is by definition a way of doing
something that denies a person control, says Lee Tien of the Electronic
Frontier Foundation in San Francisco. If that doesn't strike at the heart
of human dignity, I don't know what does. He and Albrecht would rather see a

prevent fraud. CMS has created 5 groups of acceptable electric wheelchairs.
A new chairs have to be designed, engineered and manufactured around these
new 5 groups. Competitive bidding, in 10 areas of this country. If you are
a local DME and you try to quote higher than the competitive high you
lose. This will add to the time of getting a new chair from beginning to

Most will be very surprised and disappointed with CMS new procedures to
prevent fraud. CMS has created 5 groups of acceptable electric wheelchairs.
A new chairs have to be designed, engineered and manufactured around these
new 5 groups. Competitive bidding, in 10 areas of this country. If you are
a local DME and you try to quote higher than the competitive high you
lose. This will add to the time of getting a new chair from beginning to
receipt. As I said, its not very pretty.

Plan to 'chip' Alzheimer's patients causes protest
19 May 2007
NewScientist.com news service
Celeste Biever

IT LOOKS deceptively familiar. The patient rolls up his sleeve, the doctor
sticks a
needle into his arm, and soon it's all over. But this is no routine vaccination.
Instead, the patient has been injected with a fleck of silicon that will
uniquely
identify him when zapped with radio waves. Now, nearly three years after their
use
was approved by the US Food and Drug Administration, implantable radio frequency
identification (RFID) chips are the focus of a new controversy.

The battle lines are being drawn in a quiet corner of West Palm Beach, Florida.
On
12 May, some 30 protesters held an inter-faith prayer vigil (pictured above)
outside
Alzheimer's Community Care, a day-care facility for people with dementia. At
issue
is the facility's plan to implant 200 patients with microchips manufactured and
donated by VeriChip of nearby Delray Beach. When scanned, the chip reveals a
unique
ID number, which when entered into a password-protected database gives access to
medical information about its owner.

If the plan goes ahead, it will be the first time the technology has been tried
on a
group of people with a specific mental impairment. The forgetfulness that comes
with
Alzheimer's can make it impossible for people with the condition to pass on
vital
information when faced with a medical emergency, which is why advocates are
keen
to
make use of RFID chips with this group.

If for whatever reason - an automobile accident or hurricane - the person
becomes
separated from their loved one, they are totally, totally helpless. They can't
share
what medically is wrong with them, says Mary Barnes of Alzheimer's Community
Care.
This could be a safety net.

Privacy advocates say that it is precisely this helplessness that makes the
proposed
use of the tags unacceptable. This is a community that is not in a position to
give
fully informed consent or to say no, says Katherine Albrecht of CASPIAN, an
Internet-based consumer rights organisation. The nature of the disease is that
they
can't fully understand.

Albrecht likens the violent and invasive act of implanting a chip in someone
who
does not have the ability to consent to the act of rape. Others agree with the
sentiment, if not the comparison. This is by definition a way of doing
something
that denies a person control, says Lee Tien of the Electronic Frontier
Foundation
in San Francisco. If that doesn't strike at the heart of human dignity, I don't
know what does. He and Albrecht would rather see a chip implanted in a
bracelet.

Barnes says a bracelet would not be nearly as useful. People might remove it if
it
got uncomfortable, especially those with Alzheimer's, who might not understand
why
they should wear it.

Bracelets could also label people as mentally ill, whereas an implanted chip is
much
less obvious, says Rick Rader of the Orange Grove Center in Chattanooga,
Tennessee.
The centre, which cares for children with Down's syndrome, cerebral palsy and
autism, was in the media spotlight two years ago when it considered using
VeriChip's
device in a similar study on its patients, a plan that has since been put on the
back burner.

At the time there was an outcry from those who saw an implantable RFID as
reminiscent of the mark of the beast, as described in the book of
Revelations.
As
explained on Albrecht's website, the Bible states that people who take the mark
of
the beast - a mark on the right hand or the forehead that contains a number or a
name that is required for buying and selling - will receive a grievous sore as
well as the wrath of God, while those who refuse will be rewarded.

It is something Albrecht, a Christian, takes seriously. I don't think anyone is
arguing that the VeriChip implant in its current incarnation would meet that
definition, she says. But the concern for many people is that this would be a
necessary precursor to getting to that point and therefore probably should be
objected to.

I can’t believe it is so hard to get doctors to help with pain meds. They try
to push you off to other doctors because they are too scared to write
prescriptions for medications like Oxycontin or MS-Contin, etc. I always get
the same excuse… The Government really is coming down on doctors who over

Worry more about your patient… Think of your Hippocratic Oath. That is to us,

But this was a good thing the government did. The company misled the government

government should do. They should not bother doctors who are giving it to
cancer patients and others in major pain. And doctors should give it to those

Hi Guys,
I've been taking Nurotin(sp) for about six months now for nerve pain. The
past week I've been getting dizzy when I turn in bed when getting dressed,
sitting up in bed, reclining in my chair and even if I sit forward like over a
table. Now none of this is every time but it's beginning to cramp my style. I
saw my visiting nurse today BP was 70 over 105 which is kinda normal for me.
She suggested increasing my salt intake like with Gatorade or potato chips but
don't go nuts.
She left me a phone message so when I got home at 8:30 tonight I called he
and left her this fowling message: Hi Jinifer, I just wanted to let you know
that I got an extra large jug of Gatorade, drank about half of it then I ate a
salt bagel and a half of a bag of potato chips. I'm just doing what you told
me. Bye
Anybody else here have trouble with dizziness?

Curious if any of you with pumps ever requested the morphine be taken out? I
did that this last Thursday and it was an unbelievably overwhelming and rough
weekend. They didn't 'actually' warm me of the withdrawal symptoms but having
been a patient this long common sense told me there would be some. I was on 1mg
for 24 hours, not a lot for most, but 88 pound body it apparently was! Anyway
the morphine wasn't doing anything but causing major tummy troubles so I wanted
to decease it.
Friday was fine. Friday night turned into hell. My legs were twitching
uncontrollably, not caring who or what they hit. There was excruciating leg
pain, as if my muscles were literally contracting more each second. Around 6 am
after being up almost 18 hours, I had my first sneeze attack, weird I know! 11
TIMES! I got out of bed and the legs quit twitching because of the pressure. I
was extremely weak, nauseated and sleepy. Nothing seemed to keep my mind busy
enough. So I went outside and the sneezing took over, 12, 15, sometimes 8 in a
row. Heart rate and blood pressure were elevated and no appetite at all. Now I
know why coke addicts are so thin! Every other sip was coming up. If I hadn't
had left over oral baclofen i may not have made it. Moods were up and down and
weird too!
Saturday night wasn't any better. My legs were even worse on jumping. I was
hot then cold, my nose was stopping up. Everyone thought I might end up in the
hospital as no one was getting sleep. I was up every 20 minutes until I finally
just let my legs jump until they stopped. Sometimes an hour would pass and I
would settle down and sleep.
Sunday morning didn't come fast enough! Those of you who know me KNOW i
don't get out of bed early and I was in my chair by 7:30am. So I laid in my
chair around the house, yard and anywhere there was someone awake! Around 11am
I laid down on the bed and my legs hardly moved! WOHOO! But after a fast 45
minute nap, I woke up with the worst headache Ive had since they put my halo on
in 98! Right back up, and it settled with Tylenol.
So I repeated Saturday on Sunday with a stopped up nose. Then bed time at 7,
hopping from beds, hard one to soft one...my legs laid there and cramped but no
twitching. So it was peaceful. This morning I was awake at 6am again but in
chair by 830am. I'm really weak today, very alert and doing better. Plan on
giving my doctor's office three shades of hell on Wednesday!
So word to the wise, be well prepared if you go off morphine without slowly
decreasing it. Sorry to babble just want to warn anyone heading that way!

Drug curbs bone loss after spinal cord injury
Mon May 7, 2007 11:36AM EDT
NEW YORK (Reuters Health) - The bone drug Fosamax (also called alendronate)
given
soon after spinal cord injury prevents bone loss associated with the injury, a
study
suggests.

People who've suffered spinal cord injury are at risk for rapid bone loss
occurring
below the level of the injury due to an increase in the harmful process of bone
resorption as well as impaired bone formation, thereby predisposing them to
osteoporosis and bone fractures.

In their study, Dr. Nigel L. Gilchrist, of The Princess Margaret Hospital,
Christchurch, New Zealand, and colleagues randomly assigned 31 spinal cord
injury
patients to Fosamax (70 milligrams per week) or placebo, within 10 days of
injury,
for 12 months.

The team measured bone mineral density (BMD) at various sites including the
lumbar
spine, hip, femoral neck (the area where thigh bone meets the hip) and total
body at
the start of treatment and at 3, 6, 12, and 18 months.

The researchers observed significant changes favoring the Fosamax group for
five
of
six total body BMD measurements across 18 months.

In this study, write the authors, preservation of BMD with alendronate was
clearly
demonstrated.

Whether such treatment prevents lower limb fractures in the longer term
remains
to
be investigated, they note.

Excuse me, but I'll do drugs till I die. Manby of us are surviving because
baclofen reduces our muscle spasms to a degree that helps us to live with some
comfort. Many quads are living with profound pain caused by the long term
irregular flow of spinal fluid post injury. Many of us have pain caused by
near constant UTI's from internal catheters. There is no reason why quads
should live in misery because someone else can't feel the pain that has become
a constant companion in life. I agree it is wrong to abuse drugs, but no doctor
would ask a patient to just grin and bear it. pain will kill you if you don't
treat it. Your blood preasure shoots up, you stroke and your heart goes down
and you die. Most quadriplegics can actually prove the medical value of
marijuana as a short term nerve pain medicine. I doubt any of us are taking
drugs we don't need.
People, take your drugs wisely!

John, glad to hear that it was not a you they referred to and you are alive and
well. But the John in question is still unknown. Below is the post that
prompted the e-mail. Dan T.

To me it sounded as if he was almost bipolar, but that is mere speculation
based on all of the information I heard I don't believe I ever came out and
said what truly was going on in JOHN's life. One of the truly sad part of the
story was that he was actually on the phone with his best friend and his wife
when the sheriff's department showed up, after being called to the scene by a
concerned neighbor. Believe it or not, he told his friend and wife that he was
going to have to go because the police were breaking down the door and he
needed to end things. The deputies that went in to check on his well-being then
heard a shot in the garage and found him there with a gunshot wound to the

Many people around here, including myself, are really tore up about this, but
one of the overwhelming emotions that comes out in this particular type of case
is anger. Why did it have to come to this? The only good thing that came out of
this is that the television station started to discuss suicide much more than
they had in the past. I had noticed the absolute absence of the subject and
considering that it accounts for many more deaths in my area than homicide, I
think preventive measures and signs should be publicized much more readily by
the broadcast systems.

You might consider getting your chair presure mapped.I have a TDX3 and it
sucked untill I had that done. I still have it and use it everyday. I've heard

Cushion pressure and cover size are VERY critical to good seating. I hate to
chg covers because they seem to be different sizes which leads me to have to
change pressure in my cushion - a big pain. I now use two towels sewn together
to make a pillow case type cover. I fold the extra 18 inch portion over the
top and sit ob that - thus giving me 3 towel thicknesses between my skin and
the rubber. Works well.

Do you folks bring a caregiver and pay for their flight and hotel?

Do you hire one wherever you might be going?

To whoever said lincoln was the first to suspend the bill of rights, well, he
actually suspended the right to habius corpus which certainly led to widespread
abuse, but before him, Andrew Jackson openly violated supreme court rulings
when forcing all native Americans to Oklahoma. Indians with American
citizenship had to go, but those that had obtained North Carolina citizenship
came under the protection of the state militia.
A lovely subject that split the nation 170 years ago. I'll discuss history or

anti biotics and pain meds and I would like you all to know that I really

Re: [QUAD-L] relationships and being a quad

2007-04-19 Thread delimited4
Money is an issue that every couple has to come to grips with. handicapped or
not. We all find middle grounds that suit us or we argue a lot about it. You
got to decide if you love that person. If you love them and your alone now, you
made a mistake. I have a sister that controls every freakin dime her husband
brings home. Somehow they own 15 houses and appartment buildings and he gets a
new truck each year. She gave me a $4500 mattress. Some people are gifted when
it comes to money. He never made more than 55g in one year and she gets money
by the truckload without going on a long drive. I think it is hard never
getting on top in bed. Drives me crazy watching all the crap a woman has to put
up with being around me. I thought those expences sounded reasonable. Were you
upset because she didn't consult you first? Do you begin every responce to
spending money with a sharp No!?
Honestly, for those of you having a tough time in a relationship, you need to
consider being alone. Control is important, but when your alone, just what is
it that you control? Having been alone my entire crippled life I can tell you
that I'd let a lot of little money arguements go and just be glad she said the
car was from both of us. You can tell her you'd enjoy doing some of the
shopping, but if your the guy that sulks everytime you sign a payment
agreement, think how much pain and suffering shes saving you. I do wish you
luck. hope money doesn't cripple your relationship.

Good choice Ron for not married that Lady. I'm going to have my 25th wedding
anniversary in June but my wife left me last October but we're still married.
As for control, you have every right to fear the loss of control. I came home
from rehab in October of 2000 and from that day my wife took control of
everything and I had no say or little say from that day forward. I would ask
her about finances and she would tell me not to worry about it and I would try
to discipline the kids but she would tell them that they did not have to listen
to me and she would not take me out very often until I was able to drive my own
van. She was even really upset because she needed to take a day off from work
to go with me to pick my van up and from there it just got worse. She did not
discuss the purchase of a $6000 entertainment center or the $2200 washer and
dryer or even the $5500 car that she just bought for our daughter without
telling me so either myself or my friends could check i!
t out. So my friend, I feel you made the right decision.

I was suggesting you try to work out something, but you got it figured out. I
haven't been married because I like control, I had to learn that about myself.
You obviously don't have a control problem. You have mastered the situation.
If its any help, you can hire a woman for the night. Please don't come back
with she ripped you off, cause you're in control now.
If it makes any difference, you don't have to marry someone to have a
relationship, and a marriage isn't proof of a relationship. Sorry I pissed you

Since you have never had a relationship while being a quad what makes you an
expert on relationships especially married couples? By your comments, it's
obviously you have no clue at all what you are talking about when it comes to
relationships especially being in a marriage. I should be grateful that my
wife told my daughter that the car was from both of us! She never even told me
that she bought the car until I found out three days later and that she paid
for the dam thing out of my daughter's college fund and I'm supposed to be
grateful that I'm not alone! Didn't you read the whole post especially the
part where I mention that she left me last October. No, I am not 100% alone
because my 24-year-old son is still living here but I might as well be alone
because he is not around here that much due to work and spending time with his
friends. Also, from having a 60K+ paycheck a year to living on SSDI, married
couples need to discuss finances together because making house !
payments and utility payments and putting food on the table are a little bit
more important than having a $6000 entertainment center when we already have
four perfectly functioning TVs and spending $2200 on a washer and dryer when
the ones we had worked just fine. But I suppose you would not understand that
because you have never been in a marriage being a quadriplegic.

This is a topic that is often overlooked by many doctors treating such violent
injuries. You have just lost a lot of your abilities and it is natural that you
feel your husband isn't understanding your loss. Your husband just had a major
loss too, and nobody is addressing his feelings. Please take the time to see a
psychiatrist. I'm not saying you or your husband are doing anything wrong. You
are being confronted with issues that many relationships never deal with and it
is ok to ask for help. It is a big hurdle and many couples don't make it.

As I have told you all, I am a C4, my accident was just two years ago. I am 48,
I have a husband I've been married to for 24 years, I raised three boys one is
still at home. My husband is having a terrible time with my accident, he has
been doing a lot of my care. I have hired home health to get me up and also
have someone coming in for part of the day. I don't wanna lose him, I haven't
found any support groups for him, are there any online? Any suggestions?
Thanks Debbie

I watched Jerry Fallwell and Pat Robinson after 9/11 say that god told them it
was because America tolerates homosexuals. I prayed and talked to God for a
long time and he said that he hated Jerry and Pat and not because they are
homosexuals, but because they love money and do nothing to help his children.

I'm not sure which post you are replying to, but I beg to differ. lots of
people use religion to keep others in line for one reason or another.
Sometimes it's tradition and/or money. and so far, there are two people here

But you are certainly right -- no one is using anything to keep me in line

Re: [QUAD-L] freedom of speech

2007-04-17 Thread delimited4
Imus excercized his free speech as did his sponsors. Free speech doesn't
include yelling fire in a crowded theater and shouldn't cover hate speech that
is intended to provoke a violent reaction.
Don Imus wasn't arrested for what he said. He knows he went over the line which
is more than can be said for so many others.
Rush Limbaugh is still on the air which proves free speech is not only for
inteligent people. I heard he has a new line of ties for the market. They go

intentionally insult anyone on their beliefs, race, or sexual preference.
But it is a right, freedom of speech, which includes unfavorable speech

about the law. I know I don't expect anybody to kiss my rear if I'm

Imus being fired wasn't a free speech issue, it was a money issue.
Sponsors were pulling out from his show. If not, he may well have been
back after the two week suspension. The government (federal, state,
local) didn't censor him.

Free speech doesn't mean that one's speech can't have repercussions,
especially something said by a public figure.

I don't know why God lets children die. Why do we let children die? We will
kill hundreds of thousands for oil. Is it because so many are the wrong color?
I don't think a sermon on Christianity is going to help a child in end-stage
cancer. The drug companies spent 22 billion to RD viagra, and women want fake
boobs so badly that it is a 10+ billion dollar industry. Where do we get off
giving God a hard time? We have children dieing here in America yet we use our
money to buy books oprah tells us made her fat life better. If we spent the
money we spend on weapons to feed children, we wouldn't have starving children.

I totally agree Dan,
That’s what I have a problem with, if we are his children how can he stand by
and watch his small kids starve to death or die by aids at 2-3 years old and a
lot of people will never even hear the word Jesus or God but they go to hell
because of geography?
I don’t buy it, if my father was to sit by and watch me suffer and did nothing

If one believes in the goodness of God, then I don't see how they can believe
in Hell. I think I'm a relatively good person and having said that, I could
never send anyone to Hell where they would endure everlasting torture. Where is
the goodness in that? Are we not taught that God is all knowing and all loving
and forgives us of our sins? As Jesus said as he was dying on the cross
Forgive them Father for they do not know what they do. He didn't say Hey
Dad, send these bastards to Hell.

We are like children to God. Imagine that you are the parents of twin 4 year
old boys. They are playing at the top of a flight of stairs. One of them gets
angry with the other and pushes him down the flight of stairs knowing well that
the child will get hurt and the child dies. The surviving twin shows no remorse
since most 4 year olds haven't yet developed that capacity. Would you as their
parent/God send this child to Hell?

What if you live a truly good life and do not deny the existence of God, Heaven

not be hypocritical to state that you do believe in their existence just in
case?

The big problem I have with many organized religions is you either accept and
believe, or you are doomed, regardless of how well you have lived your life and
the goodness in your heart and deeds. This is particularly true with Christian
religions.

FWIW, I do believe in a supreme being (a.k.a. God), hope there is a Heaven, and
hope there is not a Hell. Pretty sure about the first one, not sure about the
last two.

You might want to remember that if most of that list ever said they didn't
believe they would have been tortured and burned at the stake. Einstien said
that where he grew up it was important not to offend people so he often
tempered his public statements for fear of controversy. Isaac Newton was so
afraid of public arguements that when critisized he often wouldn't attend
public functions for years.

Mike, very interesting post... good work

SMART SCIENTIFIC PEOPLE BELIEVE TOO…

Nicholas Copernicus (1473-1543)
Copernicus was the Polish astronomer who put forward the first mathematically
based system of planets going around the sun. He attended various European
universities, and became a Canon in the Catholic church in 1497. His new system
was actually first presented in the Vatican gardens in 1533 before Pope Clement
VII who approved, and urged Copernicus to publish it around this time.
Copernicus was never under any threat of religious persecution - and was urged
to publish both by Catholic Bishop Guise, Cardinal Schonberg, and the
Protestant Professor George Rheticus. Copernicus referred sometimes to God in
his works, and did not see his system as in conflict with the Bible.
2. Sir Fancis Bacon (1561-1627)
Bacon was a philosopher who is known for establishing the scientific method of
inquiry based on experimentation and inductive reasoning. In De Interpretatione
Naturae Prooemium, Bacon established his goals as being the discovery of truth,
service to his country, and service to the church. Although his work was based
upon experimentation and reasoning, he rejected atheism as being the result of
insufficient depth of philosophy, stating, It is true, that a little
philosophy inclineth man’s mind to atheism, but depth in philosophy bringeth
men's minds about to religion; for while the mind of man looketh upon second
causes scattered, it may sometimes rest in them, and go no further; but when it
beholdeth the chain of them confederate, and linked together, it must needs fly
to Providence and Deity. (Of Atheism)
3. Johannes Kepler (1571-1630)
Kepler was a brilliant mathematician and astronomer. He did early work on
light, and established the laws of planetary motion about the sun. He also came
close to reaching the Newtonian concept of universal gravity - well before
Newton was born! His introduction of the idea of force in astronomy changed it
radically in a modern direction. Kepler was an extremely sincere and pious
Lutheran, whose works on astronomy contain writings about how space and the
heavenly bodies represent the Trinity. Kepler suffered no persecution for his
open avowal of the sun-centered system, and, indeed, was allowed as a
Protestant to stay in Catholic Graz as a Professor (1595-1600) when other
Protestants had been expelled!
4. Galileo Galilei (1564-1642)
Galileo is often remembered for his conflict with the Roman Catholic Church.
His controversial work on the solar system was published in 1633. It had no
proofs of a sun-centered system (Galileo's telescope discoveries did not
indicate a moving earth) and his one proof based upon the tides was invalid.
It ignored the correct elliptical orbits of planets published twenty five years
earlier by Kepler. Since his work finished by putting the Pope's favorite
argument in the mouth of the simpleton in the dialogue, the Pope (an old friend
of Galileo's) was very offended. After the trial and being forbidden to teach
the sun-centered system, Galileo did his most useful theoretical work, which
was on dynamics. Galileo expressly said that the Bible cannot err, and saw his
system as an alternate interpretation of the biblical texts.
5. Rene Descartes (1596-1650)
Descartes was a French mathematician, scientist and philosopher who has been
called the father of modern philosophy. His school studies made him
dissatisfied with previous philosophy: He had a deep religious faith as a Roman
Catholic, which he retained to his dying day, along with a resolute, passionate
desire to discover the truth. At the age of 24 he had a dream, and felt the
vocational call to seek to bring knowledge together in one system of thought.
His system began by asking what could be known if all else were doubted -
suggesting the famous I think therefore I am. Actually, it is often forgotten
that the next step for Descartes was to establish the near certainty of the
existence of God - for only if God both exists and would not want us to be
deceived by our experiences - can we trust our senses and logical thought
processes. God is, therefore, central to his whole philosophy. What he really
wanted to see was that his philosophy be adopted as standard Roman Catholic
teaching.

Well as Catholics we are suppose to believe that the Host IS the BODY and BLOOD

this would be an appropriate use of these soon to be trashed cells?

Anyway, the correct definition of Libel is: A false publication, as in
writing, print, signs, or pictures, that damages a person's reputation. Or: a
false and malicious publication printed for the purpose of defaming a living
person. You left out the last clause. In any event, it doesn't damage anyones
reputation.

What about hate talk? It certainly isn't that. The following are a few examples
of hate talk:

'We ought to send those niggers back to Africa where they came from'.
'All cripples should be shot as all they do is leech off the system.'
'Those God damn Jews killed Jesus and I say they should pay for it'.

LAUS DEO

One detail that is not mentioned, in DC, is that there can never be a building
of greater height than the Washington Monument.

With all the uproar about removing the ten commandments, etc... This is worth a
moment or two of your time. I was not aware of this historical information.
On the aluminum cap, atop the Washington Monument in Washington, DC, are
displayed two words: Laus Deo. No one can see these words. In fact, most
visitors to the monument are totally unaware they are even there and for that
matter, probably couldn't care less.

Once you know Laus Deo's history, you will want to share this with everyone you
know. But these words have been there for many years; they are 555feet, 5.125
inches high, perched on top of the monument, facing skyward to the Father of
our nation, overlooking the 69 square miles which comprise the District of
Columbia, capital of the United States of America.

Laus Deo! Two seemingly insignificant, un-noticed words. Out of sight and, one
might think, out of mind, but very meaningfully placed at the highest point
over what is the most powerful city in the most successful nation in the world.

So, what do those two words, in Latin, composed of just four syllables and only
seven letters, possibly mean? Very simply, they say Praise be to God!

Though construction of this giant obelisk began in 1848, when James Polk was
President of the United States, it was not until 1888 that the monument was
inaugurated and opened to the public.

It took twenty five years to finally cap the memorial with a tribute to the
Father of our nation, Laus Deo ...Praise be to God!

From atop this magnificent granite and marble structure, visitors may take in
the beautiful panoramic view of the city with its division into four major
segments.

From that vantage point, one can also easily see the original plan of the
designer, Pierre Charles l'Enfant ..a perfect cross imposed upon the
landscape, with the White House to the north. The Jefferson Memorial is to
the south, the Capitol to the east and the Lincoln Memorial to the west.

A cross you ask? Why a cross? What about separation of church and state? Yes,
a cross; separation of church and state was not, is not, in the Constitution.

So, read on. How interesting and, no doubt, intended to carry a profound
meaning for those who bother to notice.
Praise be to God!

Within the monument itself are 898 steps and 50 landings. As one climbs the
steps and pauses at the landings the memorial stones share a message

On the 12th Landing is a prayer offered by the City of Baltimore; on the 20th
is a memorial presented by some Chinese Christians; on the 24th a presentation
made by Sunday School children from New York and Philadelphia quoting Proverbs
10:7, Luke 18:16 and Proverbs 22:6.Praise be to God!

When the cornerstone of the Washington Monument was laid on July 4th, 1848
deposited within it were many items including the Holy Bible presented by the
Bible Society. Praise be to God!

Such was the discipline, the moral direction, and the spiritual mood given by
the founder and first President of our unique democracy .One Nation, Under
God.

I am awed by Washington's prayer for America. Have you never read it? Well,
now is your unique opportunity, so read on!

Almighty God; We make our earnest prayer that Thou wilt keep the United States
in Thy holy protection; that Thou wilt incline the hearts of the citizens to
cultivate a spirit of subordination and obedience to government; and entertain
a brotherly affection and love for one another and for their fellow citizens of
the United States at large. And finally that Thou wilt most graciously be
pleased to dispose us all to do justice, to love mercy, and to demean ourselves
with that charity, humility, and pacific temper of mind which were the
characteristics of the Divine Author of our blessed religion, and without a
humble imitation of whose example in these things we can never hope to be a
happy nation Grant our supplication, we beseech Thee, through Jesus Christ our
Lord. Amen.
Laus Deo!

When one stops to observe the inscriptions found in public places all over our
nation's capitol, he or she will easily find the signature of God, as it is
unmistakably inscribed everywhere you look.

You may forget the width and height of Laus Deo, its location, or the
architects but no one who reads this will be able to forget its meaning, or

I've never seen a city where you can't find a cross whether it be of buildings
or streets. Washington DC is also laid out in a circle. Is that symbolic?

Dave,
Unfortunately the biggest flaw I see with this particular, well-written entry
is that, in my opinion, there is no way that
Major Pierre Charles L'Enfant could have envisioned a cross being formed by the
White House, Capitol Building, Jefferson Memorial and Lincoln Memorial,
considering the latter two were built long after his original plan of 1791. In
case you're wondering, the Jefferson Memorial cornerstone was laid in 1939 and
the Lincoln Memorial was first proposed in 1867, long after L'Enfant's death.

Once you know Laus Deo's history, you will want to share this with everyone you

A cross you ask? Why a cross? What about separation of church and state? Yes,

So, read on. How interesting and, no doubt, intended to carry a profound

is a memorial presented by some Chinese Christians; on the 24th a presentation
made by Sunday School children from New York and Philadelphia quoting Proverbs
10:7, Luke 18:16 and Proverbs 22: 6.Praise be to God!

When the cornerstone of the Washington Monument was laid on July 4th, 1848
deposited within it were many items including the Holy Bible presented by the

The separation of Church and State came from a letter between Jefferson and
supreme court of one of the states. It is not a law and the supreme court has
never treated it as a law untill 1960. I'm guessing it had to do with Kennedy
being Roman Catholic. i always thought it was a misunderstood part of the
constitution. No law respecting, doesn't that mean they shall not make
judgements, pro or con, respecting religion in America. It is always
interpreted as the government will always be antireligion. People say the
courts are walking a fine line. To my understanding, the courts are dancing all
over and with the important problems we have, who cares where someone puts the
10 commandments. Obviously, nobody reads them.

You're right Quadius. But Dave was right about one very important thing: there
is no ammendment guaranteeing the separation of church and state. The first
ammendment reads:
Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or
prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or
of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition
the government for a redress of grievances.
The only guarantee is that Congress (a body of legislators) shall make no
law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise
thereof... Only the Supreme Court has defined this ammendment so narrowly
that it has lost the meaning given it by the founding fathers.

The folks that came to Jamestown wanted to get rich. The so called pilgrims had
made themselves entirely unwanted anywhere in europe and they wanted religious

Just a few questions, how did you hear about the thing with Lucifer? And are
you saying faith is just covering all the bases? Have you noticed not many
churches want cripples that don't seem to get any better. I have gone to
several churches where the pastor has looked directly at me and said god
answers the prayers of all true believers. If I don't have a church to go to on
Sundays then where will I get my weekly dosage of guilt?
I must be a true believer or I wouldn't feel guilty about this e mail.

I will probably offend someone else as I seem to do quite often but If you need
proof then you have no faith. You can't sit and question a faith. The big
differences come in what you have faith in. The questions aren't simple,
like, will your faith tolerate embryonic stem cell research? They are complex
like, will your faith allow you to tolerate the existance of someone who
studies embryonic stem cells? Does your faith really respect the rights of
people who have a different faith?
A lot of us know that Christian history doesn't have much tolerance for other
Christians, let alone people that worship non-Christian faiths. For alomost a
century we have allowed our leaders to discuss how tolerant we are. I don't
think we are tolerant. Maybe we are but I don't see it. We preach tolerance. We
seem to want to be tolerant. Most of us (able-bodied and handicapped) hate
large groups of people for all sorts of reasons.
My grandfather use to say the second amendment made people tolerant. Not enough
of us are armed?

I really don't know about everyone but, I believe there is live after death. I
died and came back. Here is my story.

My Near Death Experience

One day I was fine and the next day I could not breathe. I was so scared and at
the same time it was so peaceful. My mother was with me in the intensive care.
She looked kind of funny for she was wearing those green gowns. As I looked up
at her I know at that very moment I was going to die and said:” Mom I’m dying.”
All of a sudden everything went black. Then I was surrounded by Angles. The
room became a beautiful golden light. I heard sounds of wind chimes and Angels
were taking me up into the light. I turn and saw so many doctors working on me.
They were racing around and putting a tube down my throat. One of the doctors
garbed a long suction cup that is attached to a machine and places it again my
chest. The other doctor said: “clear” and my body jump up from the bed. They
were using the electricity paddle over and over, but the doctors couldn’t get
my heart started. Each time they used the paddles my body arch up and full to
the bed, but I wanted to go with the Angels. All at once I was by a river. It
was beautiful on the other side it was like looking into the Garden of Eden. I
saw a man surrounded by a golden light. He held out his arms and said:” If it
is to pain full come across.” It was JUSES! Oh how I wanted to go to him. I
turn my head, and saw the doctors still working to save my life. I looked at
Jesus he told me that he had so much more for me to do on earth. I was asked if
you can not take the pain just cross the river! I said:” Yes I could take the
pain.” All at once I want back into my body and was in a coma. Later I found
out I was dead for five minutes. The doctor told my family that I was in Gods
hands. The only thing to do was to pray.
After three weeks I woke up from the coma. A nurse was standing beside me. I
ask her is it time to wake up. She jumped back like she heard the voice of God.
That is when she ran to get the doctor, I was upset because I wanted to go back
to see Jesus! When the doctor came in he to was surprised to see me awake. He
told me I was in a coma for three weeks and he didn’t know if I would have came
out of it. There was a lot of people praying for you young lady. Doctor David
Smith only had one arm. He knows what he was doing. God Bless Him.
I wanted to add to this story that I know God has used me in so many
ways. I know that the Lord is with me everyday of my life. Even though
sometimes I just want to be in that heavenly place, and feel that inner peace.
I know that it is not my decision to make, it is the Lords

Do you realize if we study embryonic stem cells people are going to get morally
confused. Moral confusion leads to abortions. Abortions lead to teen sex. Teen
sex leads to embryonic stem cell research! How can you ignore these facts?

we wouldn't have these problems. Then doctors invented homogenation and
pastuerazation. Then penacillin and the worlds evils are being whittled away.

SIX STEM CELL FACTS
The public discussion of human embryo research has too often lacked
intellectual honesty, which has only compounded the confusion of an issue of
great scientific and moral complexity, say Robert P. George professor of
jurisprudence at Princeton University and a member of the President's Council
on Bioethics and Rev. Thomas V. Berg, executive director of the Westchester
Institute for Ethics and the Human Person.

Consequently, there are certain facts on which people on either side of the
moral debate should be able to agree, say George and Berg. For example:
There is no ban on human embryonic stem cell (ESC) research in the United
States; the federal government has funded such research to the tune of $130
million dollars since 2001, and the United States continues to be the
international leader in the field.
We are a long way away from therapies derived from embryonic stem cells; many
leading stem cell researchers have echoed the fact that there may be no
breakthrough any time soon.
Standard embryology texts insist that from the zygote (single-cell embryo)
stage forward there exists a new living member of the species homo sapiens that
has the active potential to develop by an internally directed process towards
maturity.

Also:
There are non-controversial alternatives worth exploring; such as the
reprogramming of ordinary somatic (body) cells, the derivation of stem cells
from amniotic fluid, and (assuming that it can be shown that the product is not
an embryo), altered nuclear transfer.
Concerns about embryo destruction are not only religious; but merely a healthy
respect for the human capacity for doing evil in pursuit of the good.
The search for cures is not the only motive behind ESC research,; many
scientists are interested only in enhancing basic scientific knowledge of such
things as cell signaling, tissue growth and early human development.

Your wrong about organ donors always being dead. Often, organ donors are kept
on life support until their organs can be harvested in a timely fashion so that
the most people will benefit.
I could believe that all life is a miracle, but after meeting quite a few
lawyers, politicians and religious leaders, I'm quite certain that life is not
miraculous and very probably a mistake.
Most children and mothers survive birth because now we believe in germs. Did
god make germs? Do religions believe in germs? Should a doctor be allowed to
study a human body while in med school. Ok. Not your doctor.
If penicillin (which was denounced by many religions) be with held from people
in those religions? It cures syphilis and we all know that syphilis was a curse
from god on people that don't have sex the way god wants them, too. I do
believe Jerry Falwell shouldn't have sex and just going by his proportions, I
don't think he could have normal sex. I think he is a masturbator and should
be stoned until he finds a new drug. Just like muslim terrorists are all gay.
Only a gay guy would want to spend eternity listening to 72 virgins babble
incesantly.

Glad to see you partly agree with me Dan. (yes I realize you were being
sarcastic) I don't agree with the part about having elaborate funerals and
burying them, but yes we must not destroy unused fertilized eggs created for
IVF treatments.

Using unused embryos is not the same as organ donation because organ donor are
dead before organs are harvested. Removing stem cells from an embryo kills the
embryo.

I've listened to Dr Kerr from Johns Hopkins talk a few times about his
research. http://www.hopkinsneuro.org/tm/
watch his presentation at the 2006 symposium here
http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=2767307331641285489hl=en
he mentioned that they want to use the embryos created for IVF that are
deformed (something to that effect) and can not be used for in-vitro treatment.
Now I can go along with using those that could not be used to result in a
pregnancy.

I agree with S. 30: A bill to intensify research to derive human pluripotent
stem cell lines

Hey peeps,

I have been using viagra with decent success. You need to take it like 45
minutes b4 the sexual encounter. Dont eat a big meal or drink 6 beers b4 hand ,
it wont allow the drug to work very well. I take the 50 mg version, but you
can go up to as much as 100mg. I straight cathe and I always cathe b4 and after
the encounter.

I get a decent hard on with viagra, but its not like the old days. I might need
to try the 100mg. I wonder about cialis?? They say with that you can choose
when to have the encounter within a 24 hour period.

If you have an understanding partner it will help everything go smoothly
without worry and anxiety. I tried bringing a girl back home that had no clue
about spinal injury. I pulled it off but was a lil nervous I wouldnt perform to
her satisfaction. But I guess who cares as long as you try.

So what do you do with the thousands of excess fertilized eggs that result from
in vitro fertilization? Store them forever? Ban the process? These excess eggs
are thrown into the garbage everyday yet I don't hear anyone complaining. So
what's your answer.

Glad to see you partly agree with me Dan. (yes I realize you were being

Using unused embryos is not the same as organ donation because organ donor are
dead before organs are harvested. Removing stem cells from an embryo kills the
embryo.

he mentioned that they want to use the embryos created for IVF that are

Now I can go along with using those that could not be used to result in a

Standard embryology texts insist that from the zygote (single-cell embryo)
stage forward there exists a new living member of the species homo sapiens that
has the active potential to develop by an internally directed process towards
maturity.

Trust me jim, they took thousands of eggs and fertilized a hundred at least.
The ones they show on tv are always so perfect. Most times the egg gets messed
up and is useless. Each time she tried, I guarentee they injected between 6 and
20 they thought had a good chance. If they only had to prep one egg the price
would drop a lot. If they aren't paying for storage then the other embryos are
probably in a local sewer.

I am against the whole IVF process that creates excess embryos to begin with.

The frozen embryos can continued to be stored indefinitely. What's wrong with
that? Are you concerned about the energy being used to keep them frozen? The
embryos that are unfrozen eventually die a natural death, just as every other
living thing, then cremated. That is quite different then killing it by
removing stem cells to use in someone else. Even organ donors are declared dead
by some standards before there organs are removed. # S.5—Stem Cell Research
Enhancement Act of 2007 doesn't even do that; it just states that the embryos
were in excess of the clinical need of the individuals seeking such treatment.
and would never be implanted in a woman.

I want my spinal cord repaired so I can breathe without a ventilator and
possibly move independently, but I don't want it so badly that I will end
another human life just for the possible improve my own life. I don't
understand how those wanting to use stem cells from embryos can't comprehend
that. An embryo is a human life, and put into the right environment, will
continue to develop and grow. I'm not so self centered that improving my life
should come at the cost of another life.

There are other sources of pluripotent stem cells, sources such as umbilical
chords and amniotic fluid. There is also somatic cell nuclear transfer
(therapeutic cloning) which I don't have a problem with.

On a side note, my cousin just gave birth to a son last week. He was the result
of IVF from her egg and her husband's sperm. They had 8 viable embryos. The
first 7 she did not carry full term. I'm happy for them that the last one she
was able to carry to term and mom and son are doing fine.

I believe life begins the moment you can sight it in a 4 power rifle scope.
How can you tell a sperm and an egg joined?
Why are men who father children called dads by lawyers?
Why are women that give birth called mom's by lawyers?
Are babies that develope from IVF damned by god?
Why do people have to interpret the bible after it has been rewritten in
english? Was it done wrong? Does god hate people in wheelchairs? Does god hate
gays? If God hates rich people then why do Americans keep electing them. I
think everyone just picks the part of religion they like and ignores the rest.
If god even gave mankind a second thought he wouldn't have allowed nuclear
bombs to work.
The real problem with stem cell research is if it is allowed then any woman
that wants IVF will get it paid for by the gov't. pretty soon men are not
needed. Most men are bad fathers and woman can do any thing men can when it
comes to work. A 13yld boy with a cup could provide enough sperm for the next
20 years.
Stem cell research is the next step toward a society that doesn't need men!
Lets face it guys, I'm a quad and women say I'm more fun than most guys. We are
being phased out. Its all a big plot by rosie odonnell so oprah can run the
world.

If you ever play russian roulette, risking a life and taking a chance is
exactly the same thing as willfully terminating a life. You can't equate IVF
with shooting craps. Everyone wants their sin to be a little sin. I've heard of
folks that destroyed hundreds of embryos trying. They don't want to adopt now
that everyone can find birth parents, (thank you phill donahue, oprah and sally
jesse for making american kids unadoptable)nobody wants to do anything about
the millions of kids in south and central America. Nobody wants to be bothered
with kids that aren't theirs. We are all part of an unforgivable sin that has
nothing to do with unborn children. People spend millions on IVF while millions
of children die of neglect all over the world. People are starving on our
border and we are afraid they might get in. We just built 4 stealth bombers for
100 billion dollars. We have spent a trillion dollars in Iraq killing people
and we pretend we are worried that using an embryo for!
its cells is a sin. Compared to what we allow to happen in this world, its
just a teensy weensy lil sin. If your not giving every spare cent to poor
children in America, then your moral sins are too great to even give stem cells

would not even tell me how long it's going to take to get the batteries and if
she had received by doctor order. She e-mailed me to not write her or call the
voicemail anymore. I could not believe that. If my brother would not have
been able to get the connector to work, I'm not sure what I would be!
doing.and I'm not sure what he did. I would be sitting in a wheelchair
without any power. The Permobil is almost impossible to push. I wonder if
they are all that way. I don't like to be in my back up wheelchair, because it
causes pressure on my rear as it only reclines and slides you down each time
you recline.. I had to stay in bed a week after the last time I tear was
repaired when it took three weeks to get the part because of the pressure
although it was not open. We are told that we are responsible for our own
arrangements if our wheelchairs are not working. No one will cover repairs to
keep a backup functioning.. The company I deal with is Apria. It seems like
they have only one person to repair anything and getting parts is so slow.
They claim they are looking for someone, they probably don't want to pay anyone
and make us wait. It seems really unfair. We don't have a lot of companies to
choose from like able-bodied persons do with cars.

Does anyone else have this problem, when their wheelchair is down.
It seems like things will get worse with the new policy of waiting till the
wheelchair repair costs are as much as a new chair. We will be having repairs
all the time and not at once, so we cannot get a new chair for a long time.
The repair people told me that it doesn't matter whether you have insurance or
Medicare that the insurance pretty much follows the same rules as Medicare .
What does anybody know about that or is it make a difference on what kind of
insurance you have

I wish it was that easy and I hope that its still that easy. DMEs are hiding
behind their counters everytime
someone rolls in. Many are requiring their customers to pay up front and then
receive a rebate when CMS agrees to pay and finally DOES pay. Often, payments
are slow due to code errors and refiling of the paperwork. And more denials.
General policies have gone out the window with across the board approval.
Most don't realize how bad it can be until they need a new chair or have to
have their chairs repaired.
Best Wishes

If your chair has gel cell batteries you won't be going for 14 mile rides
between charges. If you have U-1 batteries you are essentially driving a barbi
car. I'm guessing the guys talking about such long rideas are useing
maintenance free large batteries with over 100 amp hours. Check the amp hours
on your batteries. If they are 70 or 80, you might go 4 or 5 miles tops. some
chairs will take the coiled glass mat bateries by optima. These can deliver
incredible range. Remember to charge them properly.

Yup, pretty sick stuff. I don't mind them doing it to themselves but I resent
them wanting benefits that we have had to fight for. When they are done
mutilating themselves, they should be promptly put into an institution for the
insane. The can spend entire days learning to dress and undress but they should
be seen for what they are, insane, not handicapped.
If they want a wheelchair they can have a kitchjen chair with castors. Same
thing my great uncle used after returning from ww1. When they get infections
they should have to wait for the slow sluggish labs that many of us have. And
when they get angry they should be locked in closets. and please do not give
these mental defectives a parking permit.

OK, now for something completely revolting. If you belong to Netflix, check out
a film called Whole. It is a documentary about disabled wannabes. Everyone on
this list would compromise his soul (well, almost) for a healthy body, and
these people long to join our ranks. It leaves me speechless. Check it out.

Hi Bobbie,

I found this info on Gabapentin.

Gabapentin is used to help control some types of seizures in the treatment of
epilepsy. This medicine cannot cure epilepsy and will only work to control
seizures for as long as you continue to take it.
This medicine is also used to manage a condition called postherpetic neuralgia
(pain after “shingles”).

Symptoms of overdose
Diarrhea
Double vision
Drowsiness
Sluggishness
Slurred speech
Some side effects may occur that usually do not need medical attention. These
side effects may go away during treatment as your body adjusts to the medicine.
Also, your health care professional may be able to tell you about ways to
prevent or reduce some of these side effects. Check with your health care
professional if any of the following side effects continue or are bothersome or
if you have any questions about them:
More common
Blurred or double vision
Cold or flu-like symptoms
Delusions

I hope this helps. Stay strong.

Yes definitely get a urinalasys and the entire lab job. UA and CS. Anytime
your urine is dark, smells bad, or leaves build up in the line, its almost
always your urinay tract. You should have a lab where you could drop off a
sample. Ask your Dr. about a permanent order cause he will get the results
anyway.
I'm a proponent of having a couple of different anti biotics on hand. I keep
cipro and bactrim DS. Even though I use an external cath, I'm still very likely
to develope a wild infection fast. A supra pubic is wide open to infections.
You can even learn to take a peek at your own urine if you can afford the
microscope. talk about drifting!(its the drugs, I swear!)
Yes get your urine tested asap.

I have 2 chairs I’m trying to donate, but not having much luck.
Anyone in the AZ area who can use them… Free

1. Invacare Arrow, about 10 years old, tilt/recline, power legrest, needs
batteries and air in tires.

2. Permobil Chairman, about 6/7 years old, tilt/recline, power legrest, seat
elevator, needs batteries and has a crack in the frame. My chair shop would not
weld for liability issues, but Permobil says they have a fix.

First I was trying for a Tax right off. But to get a high value now (something
like over $500) your supposed to get a letter from the place on their
letterhead, plus an expert to give a value to them. I could not find any place
close that wanted them. Only 1 place, but it was for-profit place. I just know
I had to pay lots of money to get my chairs fixed over the years (20% co pays).
Someone must want them for parts at least.
Let me know soon, or they go to the for-profit shop…

Go to Lowe's or Home Depot and get several feet

I have heard doctors discuss soda pop as being as big a threat to good health
as cigarettes. The big part of the problem begins when we let children drink it
instead of water. It has been cited as causing decalcification of bones and
contributing to osteoperosis. Some sodas contain more cafiene than 30 cups of
coffee. One nutrition book I read years ago described soda pop as an
anti-nutrient.
If your skin breaks down easily, you may want to take more B vitamins and
vitamin D. You can get enough of these in a one a day vitamin. I've never met a
doctor that didn't take vitamin supplements even though many food supplements
have been proven to do nothing.
I take mega doses of vitamin C and a stress vitamin. Since taking it my skin
seems to heal faster and i don't stay in bed even if I have a sore. What good
is having great skin if I loose what little mind I have.

I have been suffering from skin breakdown for years and have consulted doctors
and nurses about both causes and what I can do to prevent sores or red areas.
I value all your input because I never heard before this chat room that soft
drinks and caffeine have a detrimental effect upon one's skin.

Have any of you read of any studies that definitely point to caffeine or soft
drinks as a cause of tissue breakdown?

Is it all subjective? If it is true that soft drinks and caffeine are indeed
harmful to skin tissue, I will be furious at my doctor for either withholding
this information or being a completely unaware of a solution that has caused me
untold number of months in my bed waiting for my skin to heal.

I appreciate any answers or help you could provide me, thanks in Dillon

Has anyone had acupuncture as a treatment for SCI? If so what was your
experience? Has anyone heard stories of people using acupuncture?

Re: [QUAD-L] not enough RAM for dragon!

2007-03-25 Thread delimited4
I'd need to know if your motherboard can accept a chipset to increase your RAM.
Without knowing anything about your system, I'm only guessing. Most computers
in the last 5 years will expand to 1024 megs. Thats just most, not all. You may
have one of the motherboards that is maxed at 384 megs. I'm hoping it will at
least double up to near 800 megs.
good luck,

john

I only have 384 MB and I need 512 MB. Anyone know about how much this is going
to cost me?
I know we've got some geeks up in here ;-)

Re: [QUAD-L] Dylan's seizures

2007-03-25 Thread delimited4
I take klonopin which works good for the wild seizures I have from the brain
injury. Its addictive and I'd try something new if it was going to change my
quality of life. I get seizures that can trigger AD seizures. I know its hard
for y'all to believe but I try not to get upset about anything and I try to get
this through the folks in the office that like to send my aids later or send
someone that only does housecleaning. If I get upset it can turn pretty creepy.
I haven't had a grand mal seizure in a long time. I hate when I come to in an
ER and don't remember the last 5 or 6 hours. If you think it is hard to explain
AD, try telling them it was caused by an epileptic seizure. Don't forget to say
thank you for preventing the stroke you were about to have.
Does anyone else have this problem?

A head trauma or just a spinal cord trauma?

I’ve ever had a seizure or have heard of a chemical build-up.

My neurologist told me that it is a result of having a trauma, after I had my
first couple seizures. I started my medication after testing and have never
had a seizure since. I take 50 mg Tegratol twice a day. What do others take?
I started medication about two years ago after my few seizures.

Heather Mills, ex-wife of Beatle is a contestant in the Dancing with the Stars,
which started last evening on ABC-Television and was watched by over 22 million
viewers. The contest mates contestants with professional dancers on the
international level and compete for dollars. Heather is an amputee. The other
contestants are all able bodied.

Heather Mills, uses a special parking permit in the UK, as she claims that she
needs it.
Is she in violation of that special permit because of her physical activities
on this side of the pond?

Re: [QUAD-L] parking issue w/ local PD

2007-03-22 Thread delimited4
Most courtrooms are barely accessable. When argueing your case, rredecorate the
place. I destroyed a pair of dual hinged doors. Came right off. Table wouldn't
stand on 3 legs either. Don't do it. Judge got pissed and I did 30 days in a
hospital. Be reasonable. Theres not enough handicapped parking. Judge will buy
it.

Subject: [QUAD-L] parking issue w/ local PD

here's the scenario:

it's a cold winter day in maine -- snow on the ground. i have a hair
appointment about 20 miles from my home in a small city. the salon is located
on main street which has ONE handicap parking space for a large downtown area.
when i arrive, this spot is taken and i have my PCA drive around to search the
area for another -- unsuccesful. after a few circles around the main street
loop i am almost late for my appt so i tell her to just invent a space at the
end of the diagonal parking row b/c i need space on the passenger side to get
my bruno seat in and out. there was snow on the ground which covered the lines.
if i had not been familiar with the area i wouldn't have known any different. i
figured it was worth the risk of getting ticketed b/c i would have a strong
argument as to why i violated the parking laws. as luck would have it, i did
get a ticket which i refuse to pay (it's only $20 but it's the principle). so
now i have a court date and need to come up with some stron!
g arguments. some other factoids to consider: even in the summer this downtown
area is difficult to navigate in a manual chair -- there are brick sidewalks
that need repair and the curb cuts are a joke after the abuse from many
winters, there is no way i could get around this area without help in the
winter especially with improper snow removal. also, i am not sure what the
ratio for handicap spaces to regular spaces is, but it doesn't seem like this
meets code. does anyone know that ratio? i wanna say 1/25 or around that. the
one space that is there is on a severe slope which makes the transfer outside
of the vehicle tricky. are accessible spaces supposed to be level?

so basically i need some ammo and strong arguments so i can get my point across
to an unsympathetic police dept. any suggestions on things to say to make them
see it from my (and our) point of view? parking is such a struggle -- a battle
we are always fighting -- and i'm fed up!
