[saligaonet] Late Mr. C.C. da Lima-II
The Late Mr. Cassiano C. da Lima(1926-2004)II. For more than two months the late Mr.Cassiano.C.da Lima was interned in Boscio Hospital in Candolim. The cause of his death over there was liver cirrhosis. Earlier comforted by the Sacraments of Penance,,Holy Eucharist and Anointing of the Sick he left for his heavenly Home at twenty-two hours on 19th May,2004.His thoughts, during his ailment, must have been on his family members, Saligao villagers and others, not forgetting his never- to be- forgotten -bicycle which to-day stands in silence mourning the death of its master. Here is Cassianos Ode to his Bicycle. Is it time we bid Goodbye? True , we have been long together In all shades of tropical weather: You served none else but me It may sound strange I too know not but you of your kind. Companion of mine, 34 happy years ! Accept these petals one for one Whatever little I achieved Is due to you no mean measure; When my friends, villagers see you By my own name they greet you This is your well merited honour. You are not just a vehicle; Willing co-operator, speedy inspirer Some people frowned at us Because I still kept you company Valueless, they know not How precious you are to me I am ever grateful to you Turn away for a moment, dear, My eyes are moist, the tongue heavy: How hard to say GOODBYE But its Masters Call, I resign, Leaving sweet memories behind. Fr. Nascimento Mascarenhas Vasco da Gama, 30-05-2004.
[saligaonet] Ximecho Khuris and Reddeachi Xim
XIMECHO KHURIS AND REDDEACHI XIM. It is between the Barrosso vaddo in Sangolda and Mollebhat in Saligao that finally the permanent border stone NIS of the village was laid. Saligao is boardered on the east by the village of Sangolda. For a long time in the olden days there existed a dispute about the boarder line between the two villages( as we find even now between states and countries). One night Saligao would move the boarder stone( NIS) a few yards east into Sangolda. Then a few days after Saligao would wake up to find the stone moved far west into its territory. Often the two factions would meet each other during the night and pitched battles would ensure over the border line. There is a legend around this XIMECHO KHURIS and how the dispute was settled. It is said that the villagers of Sangolda suggested that the GANVKARS of Sangolda and Saligao should stand at dusk at the disputed border and shout O-o-h Xime and if an echoing reply O-o-h Oh was heard, then that should be the border line to which both should agree. Sangolda hid a man deep under ground to answer the call. Thus the dispute was finally settled. Late at night, after the settlement, Sangotkars went to get the hidden man out. They found he was dead. They rushed to his wife and promised to give her only son the ZON if she promised to keep secret the cause of her husbands death. To be a ganvkar was a prestigious title. ZONKARS were the privileged people of the village and enjoyed many social and economic benefits. The widow accepted the offer. Finally, to complete the boundary line between the two villages, soon after the monsoon was over, when the ground was still wet and mucky, a buffalo was made to run from the heights of Pilerne down the village of Guirim. The path of the running buffalo was accepted as the boundary line(" Reddeachi Xim". Hence a zig-zag frontier exists between the villages of Sangolda and Saligao. A Cross( Ximecho Khuris) exists as a memorial at the side of Chogm Road to denote the spot ( boarder)of separation between Saligao and Sangolda villages. THE FIRST RAINS IN SALIGAO. Heavy rains lashed Saligao and surrounding areas on the evening of 30th May this year bringing much relief to the villagers reeling under the heat. It was the first rains of this season. It reminded me of the first heavy downpour in the past that was immortalized in song by our famous singer Mr. Oslando DSousa from Arrarim in his POILO PAUS. If my memory serves me right it was in 1948 that monsoons got delayed, and the elders attributed it to the sins of the people. They asked the young to pray for rains, saying that the prayers of the children are always answered by God. There was a picturesque procession of little children carrying stones on their head, invoking blessings of God and copious rain, in verse as they climbed the hill along with elders and went from cross to cross built by our ancestors on hills of Saligao They commenced their petition by accusing themselves of human frailty and pleaded for mercy. [saligaonet] BIYANI or Cashew Seeds Game
GAMES WE AND OUR ANCESTORS PLAYED IN SALIGAO Due to the foundation of English schools in Saligao already in the passed century, playing grounds were provided to the students. Mater Dei Institute had its own ground while others played foot-ball in the fields and level hilly terrain. During my younger days I witnessed even hockey and cricket matches being played in Saligao. However foot-ball was the most favourite game of the boys. Other games seasonally played were---cashew seeds games, marbles, tonko-bal, collie, fovio(mixed boys and girls) and the indoor games tablam, five stones,( mostly by hindu women and girls with some exception among christians), konxeamnim etc.My research identified more than twenty traditional games. However youngsters, teen-agers with whom I inter-acted lately do not seem to know much about these games which we played in forties, fifties and sixties and little beyond. Cable TV is also responsible for the decline of these games as I saw most of our young boys and girls glued to the idiot box and also tuitions which is a craze in these days due to competitions in securing entry into colleges and institutes of higher learning. Summer time was supposed to be the most ideal time to indulge in outdoor games. In the following postings I shall give a brief description of some of these games. BIYANI ( Cashew Seeds Game) In the months of April/May till the beginning of monsoon, Biyani or cashew seeds games were played on the long stretch of the red mud roads when there was hardly any cars or heavy vehicles passing. Occasionally we saw a bullock cart or a gaddi( match box as it was called locally) or a cycle making rounds on these roads. Mode of Playing: a) A mark was set at a distance of about twelve to fifteen feet away. Each player had to throw a seed nearest to mark to get their turn first and the rest accordingly after. b) Each player had to contribute two or three seeds. All the collected seeds for that game were placed on a slightly raised mud row called Uri and a boundry line was marked around the Uri. The seeds were placed horizontally on the Uri except one on the extreme left was placed vertical. c) The player whose turn is first, standing about twelve to fifteen feet away from the Uri stikes at the seeds with a BOTO( striker). If he strikes the main seed( Vertical) outside the boundry line around the Uri, he is entitled to all the seeds on the Uri, otherwise only for those seeds struck out of the Uri boundry. The remaining seeds inside are re-arranged for the next player till all the seeds contributed for that game are won. Then they wound begin a fresh game( I regret for not providing a diagram, which I possess). BOTTO. The largest dry cashew seed is selected. In the navel( center) of the seed a small hole is bored and with some sharp and pointed contrivance the inside kernel is scraped out. Into this hollow of the seed molten led is poured in through the hole. The seed then becomes heavy and is used as a botto( stiker) for playing the cashew seeds game Fr. Nascimento Mascarenhas, Vasco, 4th June, 2004. Notes references. PEREIRA, Angelo, Vignettes of Fading Traditions, ; GOMES,Olivinho, Village Life.Various News-papers on Old Goan Games etc.
[saligaonet] Biyannim-II, Lobbiamnim Kartanim- Goan Games
BIYANNI or Cashew Seed GameII, LOBBIAMNIM (or 7 tiles) KARTANIM This second cashew seed game involves a group of players who stand at a distance from a tree or wall. They would then throw their cashew seeds. Players whose seed is closer to the wall/tree, is to play first. He throws a bigger cashew nut which is called BOTTO, against the floor to bounce on the wall/tree and tries to catch it. If he is successful, he wins the game and can take all the cashew seeds thrown by other players. LOBIAMNIM or 7 TILES. The game is played by two teams. One team does the fielding and the other has to strike the tiles that are piled on top of each other by throwing a ball (tennis ball or one made of shock filed with husk) . If the player is successful in breaking the pile he and his team mates run away. Because the opponents can hit them with the ball, in which case the team change sides. Therefore, the striking players try their level best to throw the ball. In case of a miss, the running team mates throw the ball as far as possible. In the meantime one or more of them try to remake the tile pile. Once all the 7 tiles are piled, they shout lobio and the game is over. When the tiles are stuck, if any opponent player successfully takes catch of the ball the striker is out. In Ilhas and Salcette this game is called LOGORIO. KARTANIM To play this game, some empty cigarette boxes were used, which thrown from a distance, with the aim to throw a box on another one. If he succeeded to cover the other, fully or partly, he could take the boxes thrown by both the players. My friend Mrs. Maria de Lourdes Bravo da Costa Rodrigues from Merces, Ilhas and Librarian of Central Library, Panjim has done a good research on these old games and has published her findings in Heralds Sunday edition( Mirror?). Vide Sunday, 6th July, 1997. The above games are mentioned therein by her. Compiled by Fr. Nascimento Mascarenhas Vasco da Gama, 5th June, 2004.
[saligaonet] Godd'de-- marble games-- Bodde Milam--II.
TIN MILAM. This is a unique game resembling golf, except that unlike in golf where clubs are used, fingers were use to push the marble into the hole ( Mil). Two or any even or odd number of players could take part in the game. Three small holes( about 1 ½ dia. X 1 deep)were dug in the ground in a straight line, about five feet apart . Mode of striking The marble was held in the tips of the thumb and the first finger of the right hand. The striking was done by aiming and propelling forward the marble with the middle finger of the left hand. Standing at hole No. 1, each player had to throw his marble towards the hole no. 3. The one whose marble was closest to the hole had his turn first in the game, the others following respectively as per their position. Then standing at hole no. 3, every player had to throw his marble into the center hole. Those with a good aim could do this at one stroke, but others could only do it in stages, coming closer at every throw till they could dip the marble in the hole. Each player had only one throw for his turn. But a player had the option to hit another players marble which was closer to the hole. If he hit the marble, he had another turn, and so on, till he failed to strike. In this way, some took advantage to win the hole by hitting out the marbles of others closer than his to the hole and winning more chances. After completing the central mil2, the players had to get into mil 1. The same process was followed as in mil 2. After completing mil1,a player had to strike PENO, that is, he had to strike at any other players marble and thus end his part in the game. The last player in the game who had no marble left to strike at, lost the game, and he had to pay a penalty called Ghus. The most interesting part of the game was dodging and preventing the others from filling the mil. The tempo rose when all were awaiting to strike the Peno. The players tried to be out of the striking range of others, and those with good aim succeeded in this. There were cliques and favoritism at times in making an unpopular or boastful player lose. GHUS ( Penalty). The guskar, the player who lost, was made to push his marble into the mils whit his elbow. He had to hold his right ear with his right hand and had to use his elbow to move the marble forward.. Other players in their turn hit his marble out of range, and thus prolonged his agony. The marble of the guskar was placed on mil 3. The other players standing at mil 1 tried to strike at his marble. This distance between mil 1 and 3 being a long one, if there were no good aimers, the guskar was lucky and mil3 was taken as dipped. In case the guskar had filled in mil 2, before getting the ghus, he could go straight to mil1 to complete the gus The same process of striking the guskars marble by other players and dissuading him from dipping-in followed. [saligaonet] Game on Koinddo Bal Tikttem
KOINDDO BAL TIKTTEM. . For this game, two or more players make a team. A small slit is made on the ground. On that the bal is kept. The player places the stick on to slit in the ground and asks' kollie?'( follie? )When the opponent replies Kollie( or follie), the bal is shot out. If it is caught by the opponent the player is out, if not the player plays by striking the bal with the koinddo(stick). He has to play three times, and at least strike the bal once , if not he is out. Points are counted depending on how many times the bal is hit with the koinddo If the balis hit once, one koinddo makes one point, if twice one bal and if thrice, than half bal. The counting of points start from the spot where the bal is up to the slit. The player can also be out of the game while playing, if the bal is caught in the air by the opponent. In this case he is given an option. He can come hopping with the bal in his hand up to the slit. If he successfully reaches the slit he can continue playing. The winner is the one who gets the highest number of points. In some areas of Goa this game is known as GOINDO BAL SONNNAMNIM One fourth of coconut shell is cut and the husk is removed to make a sonn and koinddo( one foot moderate bamboo or thick stick) is required. This is a game for girls and is a variant of Koinddo Bal. The procedure of the game is the same as in koinddo bal. TIKTTEM. This is two player game. Each player has black and yellow pawns. Alternately shells and stones can also be used. A square is divided into two smaller squares. Each player alternately places the shell/stone on the line by placing his shell/stone in between. However, he also tries to make his own tikttem. The second player makes it difficult to complete the line by placing his shell/stone in between. However, he also tries to make his tikttem. When a player completes a tikttem he can take the shell/ stone of the other player. The game is over when three tikttins' are made. Compiled by Fr. Nascimento Mascarenhas Vasco da Gama, 07-06-2004.
[saligaonet] Lobbi ani Ringamnim.
Here are another two games of yesteryears. PAIMYANI or LOBBI. This can be played by any number of players, but require a minimum of two. The player throws a lobbi( a flat tilepiece or shell) in the first square without a lobbi or the foot touching the line of a square. If it touches the line then the player is out. The player has to take on the lobbi to all the squares on one side and come from the other side. This continues till all the squares are complete. Now the player has to throw the lobbi into a square by standing or sitting with his back. The square in which the lobbi has fallen, becomes the property of that player, and other players cannot step it. They have to jump over it. But before throwing, he has to ask the other player whether from the up or down side or either standing or sitting. The game continues till all the squares are taken by the players. The one having more of squares in his possession, is the winner. RINGANIM/KILLING. This game was played with a rubber ring by two opponents players either side. Whoever wins the toss would take the ring. An area ( a square) is marked for each side with a dividing line. The players would strive to hit the players with the ring. If the player caught the ring in his hands he was not out. He would then use it back at the players on the opposite side. If the ring hit and fell on the floor the player was out. The game ends when all the players of a side are out. Compiled by Fr. Nascimento Mascarenhas. Vasco da Gama , 09-06-2004.
[saligaonet] Handkerchief( Asket or Basket)
HANDKERCHIEF (ASKET OR BASKET) This game is played by a group of 10 or 15 players. However the minimum limit should be 6. The players sit to make a circle. One among them is the den. The den has to go round the circle with a handkerchief hidden in his hand. He has to keep the handkerchief furtively behind one of the players. The players therefore have to be attentive to see whether the handkerchief is behind them. The player, behind whom the handkerchief is placed has to run around the circle to catch the den. If the player touches the den, the player is out, or the den can go and sit in the place of the player before the player can get him/her out. When the den is going round the circle he/she is accompanied by a song on the way: Asket or Basket, green and yellow basket, I wrote a letter to my mother, on the way I dropped it. If the player is not able to catch the den before sitting, he becomes the den and the game continues. TWOS AND THREES Remember Calangute beach and the enthusiasm generated by this game? The picnickers also looked forward for this game This game is played in a group standing in a circle in twos, one in front of the other. Number 1 becomes the den or the one to be chased. Number 2 becomes the chaser when the game begins. Number 1 can run in the circle or outside the circle, but the chaser Number 2 can only run outside the circle. When Number 1 is about to be caught, he/she runs and stands in front of Number 1 of another pair and the third person( i.e. the last one) now becomes the den who has to run and stand in front of another Number 1 in order to be saved. If he/she is caught then he becomes the chaser( Input by Mrs. Berlinda Caldeira, Vasco-da-Gama). Compiled by Fr. Nascimento Mascarenhas. Vasco da Gama, 10-06-2004.

[saligaonet] Pottio( Sttick Stones) and Langddi (Hopping game)
These are the last games in the Series The Games We and Our Ancestors Played. Pottio( Stick And Stone). This game can be played by any number of players, but a minimum of two players are required. One player who is at the den holds the stick horizontally in his hands and the other player has to throw the stick down by using his own stick and then before he is caught by the den has to touch the tip of his stick on a stone and keep it there. If his stick is not on the stone and he is caught by the den then he is out. The players go on pushing the dens stick with their own and while in the process if the den catches any player, he is out. He has now to be the new den. The game continues till the players feel bored or it is time to go home. Langddi( Hopping Game). In this game there are two teams playing with each other. The playing field is square in shape. Players of one team stand in the square, while the opponents play the game by sending one player at a time into the ground. The player has to hop(langddi), get into the square and try to catch or touch as many players as possible and come out of the square. The players which are touched have to leave the square. In case he puts his second foot down, before crossing the line, he is out. The next set is played by changing the position of the teams. The set is over when all players of either side are out. P.S. A variants on Koindo Bal and Sonnamnim were inadvertently omitted: When the opponents replies kollie, the bal is shot out. If any opponents catches the bal then the player is out. If they do not catch and the bal falls on the ground then the player places the koindo more or less one foot at the back of the small slit and one of the opponents tries to hit the koindo. If he succeeds to hit the koindo with the bal then the player is out, if he does not hit then the player strikes the bal three times and from the place where the bal is hit and reaches that distance to the small slit is counted with the koindofor points( Koindo= four or five balam) But if player is unable to hit the bal from the ground with the koindo even after trying three times, then the player is out. The points are however agreed upon like 100, 200, before the games starts.etc. The variant of Sonnamnimis same as the above The variant in also scoring the points and a consequent penalty is held by players winning the game etc.. [saligaonet] Pre-portuguese inhabitants of saligao their deities--IV
THE PRE-PORTUGUESE INHABITANTS OF SALIGAO AND THEIR DEITIES-IV. The Hindu Mahajans. It is interesting to note that Gaud Saraswat Samaz Parichay Granth, edited by Ravindra Patkar, gives the following information regarding Sallganv Hindu Bhramins, except Petkars Sallgaokar ,of Saligao at Advalpal. Besides the four mahajans , Porob Salgaokar, Naik Salgaokar, Sinai Salgaokar( Parsekar) and Dhond Salgaokar( Gole), the book registers other Hindu Brahmins with surnames like Azganvkar, Kogekar, Harolikar, Khattkhate, Gole, Bakur, Modi, and Rashiwadakar. They are also Mahajans and they worship Shri Xervani-Vetal at Advalpal as their gram-deva( village deity) at Salgao-vaddo. So we have 12 as total 'mahajans' in this book while the Official Government Gazette, Goa of 3rd November, 1966 ,page 397 mentions just the following five: Porob Salgaokar---54 members; Naique Salgaokar-130 members; Sinai Salgaokar-179 members; Dhond Salgaokar---111 members and Petkar Salgaokar( Sudra)-333 members. As we have said before Petkar Salgaokar were recognized as the 5th Vangor in the year 1966 only By the Order of 13th October, 1966( Vide, Official Gazette of 3rd November, 1966, page 387), the Rules and Regulations of the Hindu Temple of Xri Devi Xervani and Shri Vetal Salgaunkar of Advalpale, Bicholim Taluka comprising of 24 sections was approved and signed by the Director of Civil Administration Services The sanction accorded to the Rules Regulations is signed by G.K. Bhanot, Chief Secretary. So the Goa Government Gazette does not say anything regarding the other mahajans mentioned in the Saraswat Samaz Parichay Granth. [saligaonet] The present hindu community of saligao
Life In Saligao At the Moment And The Present Hindu Community. In most aspects, life in Saligao has not change much. Though modernization has set in, it does not make itself evident. The older generation still walk or cycle to the tintto or market place with walking stick and hat, occasionally stopping to exchange a bit of news or greetings with a fellow villager. In many ways it continues to be a tight community, content to keep the village going amongst themselves with some programmes or the other throughout the year. Activities among the hindus are centered around the new Sri Devi Xervani-Vetal temple and also at Sri Datttawari ( Salmona) and Sri Lakshiminarayan ( Mudddavaddi) and Sri Vetal ( Molebhatt) Temples. Every year the Hindus of the village keep 12th April as the birthday of Sri. Xervani. On the reconstructed temple Shri Xervani-Vetal in Salmona, we read the following inscription in Marathi and is translated as follows: May Goddess Xervani-Vetal bless us. The foundation laying ceremony of this temple was performed on 3-8-1994 at the hands of Dr. Wilfred DSouza, Honourable Chief Minister of the Government of Goa. This re-constructed temple was inaugurated on 12-4-1996. Prayers were offered from 10. 45 a.m. They were attended by Mr. Anant. V. Petkar Salgaokar, the President of Devi- Xervani Panchayatan Sounstha, Salganv-vaddo, Advalpale, Assonora, Goa, who would also run the affairs of the reconstructed temple with its committee, Mr. Mohan Sinai Salgaokar, a Brahmin member of the Sounsthan, Mr. Manohar Balagi Paynik of Asganv, representative of the Saligao settlers hindu community and a sizeable crowd. The puja was performed by a team of bhott( hindu priests)especially brought for this occasion. The inside of the temple is the same pre-Portuguese original structure where one notices a Roin( white ant-hill) covered with a roof. The structure in front of the temple in new. The spot where the temple exists, according to Mr. Anant V. Petkar is called Diulachem Batta. There is also a stage on temple premises. The date 12th April, 1996 is to be celebrated as the birthday of Sri Xervani with big procession every year. The temple was built with the help of Dr. Wilfred D Souza and donations from worshippers. The Deepa Stamba( lamp post) in front of the temple was built by Shirodkar brothers on 18-2-1986 and donated to Xervani-Vetal temple. They are worshippers of the temple. During my olden days they used to have nataks( dramas) which continue at present in the proximity of the various temples in Saligao . Hindu boys and girls frequent Mater Dei Institute and Lourdes Convent and are an asset to these Institutions. They are also members of the various football teams and Clubs like Saligao Sporting, Adarsh Y.Sangh and Saligao United. Some of them still till the land. I was happy to see some of my old hindu friends with boilanch gaddo and boilanchem zott doing their rounds to gain their daily bread. With these gains we have supported our families and build new houses said some of the hindu bretheren. Some villagers have even gone supplying water from Saligao wells to various enterprising houses and creating problems in the village. However this is now partially solved due to some good will. Building trust among the Christian-Hindu community is the aim of the villagers. When will this happen? Fr. Nascimento Mascarenhas. Vasco da Gama 21-06-2004

This is an old age devotion in Goa. Saligao Seminary had 89% results in the SSC this year. The new academic year 2004-2005 began at the Seminary on 13th June. Archbishop Filipe Neri Ferrao celebrated the mass along with the staff and later presided over the re-opening of the new scholastic year. Fr. Avinash Rebelo, the Rector welcomed the staff and students and Archbishop also spoke sharing his views on Seminary Life and Spirituality The programme also had few musical and choral items. [saligaonet] Remembering Sam Juanv Late C.Alvares
REMEMBERING SAM JUANV LATE C. ALVARES I . The feast of Sao Joao celebrated on 24th June, was earlier called Zanvianche Fest, the feast of sons-in-law. It was held virtually in every village, first by taking part in the solemn mass in the local Church( during our young age the feast was preceded by a fast)and boys wearing colourful wreathes and jumping in the wells. Aurora Maria Couto in he latest book Goa A Daughters Story says this feast coincides with a period in the hindu calendar when the newly married hindu girl is brought back to her parental home, with sexual relations restored only when her husband comes to take her back. The monsoon season appears to be considered inauspicious even to conceive new life. The Catholic celebration has adopted this practice in its own way; the newly married couple is invited to the home of the girls parents; the sons-in-law of the village wear a crown of leaves and are taken to the well where they are dared to jump in. If they hesitate, they are pushed in: a sort of unwilling separation from the wife. There are myths and explanations for this celebration. One of them relates to St. John to the jumping in joy in his mothers womb, which is symbolized by the well; another relates to the baptism of St. John in the river Jordan. The fact remains that fertility, a reluctant stoppage of sexual relations and a joyful reunion are commemorated in this feast that heralds the seeding time of the monsoon. This feast have a special flavour in the riverine life of some villages like Siolim, Candolim, Ribandar etc.where they rig up a sangodd, a platform of boats on which groups sing songs. During our younger days on 24th June around noon-time, we lads of Tabavaddo-Mollebhatt went round the wells of the wards accompanying the sons-in-law and singing joyfully some rhymes like Sam Juanv Konkari Buddhegele( or instead of Buddhugele, the name or nickname of the household was invoked) Baint Re Natali, Sam Juanv Konkari Budhugele Baint Re Natali and finally calling the name Sao Juanv we then jumped in the well. This Buddugeli baim in Mollebhatt, Donddachi baim in Donvaddo etc were the famous wells where young ones learnt there to swim and the thrill and joy it gave to the swimmers as well as on-lookers and helpers with ropes, all this, our good friend Annette DSouza so beautifully described earlier in one of her postings Every family in the ward then distributed jackfruits or fernadino or malghues mangoes to all and and goan milk, naka sokoilem to the elders. Boys did jump, this year, in the wells in Saligao and Don-vaddo pond to keep up the tradition and the saligao spirit in motion just shouting Sam Juanv. However the song Sam Juanvcho Dhobazo that is on everyones lips on Sam Juanv Day, in Goa, is the one composed by none other than our famous Saligao Konkani Duet King , the late C.( Celestino ) Alvares Party .Through the singing of this song which is broadcast on Radio every year, the traditional feast of Sam Juanv is kept alive till this day. Viva Sam Juanv. to be continued Fr. Nascimento Mascarenhas,Vasco da Gama, 25-06-2004.

[saligaonet] Astuteness of a saligaukar
THE ASTUTENESS OF A SALIGAUNKAR. Nonagenarian Professor Eduardo de Sousa who lives in the village of Pilerne is a ganvkar of Saligao. He belongs to the 9th Vangodd of the Comunidade de Saligao. I came to know him in 1990. He is short of 4 years to hit a century and still going strong. He is a great writer of many fictional stories and they have appeared in many dailies and periodicals. He is at easy writing and telling stories in konkani, english, portuguese etc and is a walking encyclopedia. A few months back he sent me his book From Goa With Love, a magnum opus of Goan greatness Dr.Leo Rebello who has written the foreword for this book relates the story of Prof. Eduardo de Sousa He was 93 years old when he went to the doctor to get a physical examination. A few days later, the doctor saw the man walking down the street with a gorgeous young lady on his arm. A couple of days later, when the ever-green young man visited the doctor again the doc quipped, you are really doing great, is it not?. The man replied, Just doing what you said doctor, Get a hot mamma and be cheerful The doctor replied I did not say that. I said you got a heart murmur. Be careful, Touchwood, Prof. Eduardo does not have a heart murmur because he has learnt not to murmur in life, concludes Rebello Now two stories of Saligaunkars as written by Professor Eduardo in his book. 1- Saligaunkars are proud to be referred to as Kole. To show their astuteness, I am relating a fact. A Saligaunkar had a big shop of leather articles, including shoes. When he went abroad he came across some shoes of different kinds and shapes, very cheap. So he bought dozens of them. To avoid customs duty he made two different parcels: one of right leg shoes only, and the other of left feet. When the parcels reached Panjim they were not claimed. After some time they were auctioned. None of the shoe merchants present, bargained, because they were useless. The cunning Saligaunkar bought the parcel in auction for a song, through one of his friends, deceiving the customs by his cleverness. 2- During the month of May, the Gaunkars of the Communidades go to the respective clerk to write their names, to get the zonn( divident) of the year. As a Gaunkar of Saligao, I went last Sunday to the Communidades building to write my name. The clerk was not present. So I asked a person present there, where to meet him. He told me to go to the house of the director of a Company nearby, and telephone. When I entered the house of the director, a pretty thing there asked me the reason for meeting the director. I told her the reason for wishing to meet the director. She smiled and told me to sit and wait for fifteen minutes, because the directory was taking bath and the director was out! Compiled by Fr. Nascimento Mascarenhas Vasco da Gama, 27-06-2004.
[saligaonet] Franciscan Obsevant Priests in Bardez
THE ARRIVAL OF THE FRANCISCAN OBSERVANTS PRIESTS IN BARDEZ The coming of the Franciscan Observant Priests in Bardez around 1555, led them in search for new conversions to the fold of Christianity and so having gained sufficient ground in Reis Magos( Verem) and Candolim, they next glanced at Nagoa de Bardez. In this village they set their foot in 1560 and began evangelizing in the neighbhouring villages of Oxel, Siolim, Anjuna-Assagao, Parra and Saligao. At that time the Rectorateor Parish of Nagoa with the above mentioned villages formed an extensive parish in the whole of Bardez. Subsequently the following villages became independent parishes, Siolim in 1568, Anjuna in 1603, Parra in 1649 and Oxel in 1661.Assagao was an affiliated part of the parish of Anjuna which had a chapel. It was built in 1775 and it became a Parish Church in 1813. Finally Saligao was dismembered from the parish of Nagoa and became a parish on 26-11-1873, the neo-gothic Church being built by the Comunidade de Saligao. Nagoa has Arpora an independent communidade, with part of Baga annexed to it at the moment.. Frei Paulo da Trindade O.F.M( 1570-1651)who wrote about the History of Franciscans in India, gives the following description of the Rectorate of Nagoa : Opposite( Calangute) we have a church of the Blessed Trinity which was the first Church we founded after the one of the Magi. For this reason there are many Christians there: 3357 who go to Confession, 100 Communicants and 837 children. Four villages( a number had developed into parishes by the time Paulo de Trindade composed his chronicle) are under its jurisdiction: Nagoa, where the church was constructed, Parra, Arpora and Saligao, which is one of the principal villages and very large, entirely inhabited by Brahmins, who have all been converted so that very few or hardly any pagan(sic) are left..( Vide, Meersman, Fr. Achilles, O.F.M. The Ancient Franciscan Provinces In India, 1971, Bangalore, p.107). The great goan Church historian, the late Msgr. Canon Francisco Xavier Gomes Catao states that by 1636 the whole village of Saligao was Christianised. Those hindus who did not want to convert fled from the village of Salgaum with their deities and fixed themselves in Salgao-vaddo, Advalpale, in the XVI century ( Vide, Souvenir of Mãe de Deus, 1873-1973, as well as the Official Gazette, 3rd November, 1966,Panjim, Goa, p. 1). Re: [saligaonet] San Joao in Abu Dhabi
Dear Zelma, It was very nice to have shared with us the feast of Sao Joao in Abu Dhabiwith other three families and made children and adults quite happy. You and Perviz are quite creative. Congrats! and keep the spirit going. In our young days some of the Church and village festivals were invested with unique traditions and ceremonies. On the eve of the feast of John the Baptist( 23rd June) was celebrated with great enthusiasm by the village youth. In each vaddo the boys put together a " Judeu", a strawman dressed in cast-off clothes. It symbolised Judas the traitor. The effigy was carried round the vaddo by the boys who lustily repeated a chorus which said that Saint John who paved the way for the Messiah was great as hills, Judas the betrayer was nothing better than ash. After the sunset a bonfire was lit, the effigy of Judeu was severely beaten and thrown in the fire to be reduced to ashes in a great blaze. In Saligao there was a Society of Priests known as Society of St. Peter. It almost began when Our Church of Saligao was innaugurate in the year 1873 and continued till the year Rev. Father Natividade de Souza was the Vicar of Saligao and lateFr. Albert Saldanha was Secretary and each year a priest was chosen the previous year to celebrate it on 29th of June with solemnityin the Saligao Church and a yearly meeting of all Saligao priests on previous day of the feast washeld in the Church premises or hall. Some priests jumped in the well of the Church and later on took part in the Agape. For this feast all priests from saligaoworking in Goaand other parts of India and even overseas used to come. They also had common breviaryprayer said all together in the Church followed by theOffice of the dead for souls of the priests and so on.They passed all the day in the Church and exchanged views adn greetings and shared their experiencesI The feastwas closed afterI became priests and had no chance to bethe priest President. Some day I will write about this interesting Society of St. Peter of Saligao. That day was called SAO JOAO of Priestsby thePeople. All this is gone...gone...gone. I hope you have received my previous e-mail Loves to Perviz and prayers for you and family. Fr.Nascimento Mascarenhas. - Original Message - From: Zelma G DeSouza To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Saturday, June 26, 2004 4:22 PM Subject: Re: [saligaonet] San Joao in Abu Dhabi Hello Saligaokars, Belated Happy San Joao !!! Saw couple of emails from Annette and news on the Goanet email too wishing everyone. So I decided to share a few things we did at home last thursday on San Joao. Since it was a Thursday, weekend here, Perviz and myself decided to have some fun. We invited three families over with kids and all we told them was make sure you have a change of clothes for the children. The rest was a surprise. We got one of those artificial pools, a fairly large one for about 5 kids in the age group of 2 -8 years to fit in. We placed it in our bathroom along with some tall plants around it and filled it with water. Perviz got some colourful plastic garlands and made crowns for the children ( Kopel) and some for them to put around their necks. All the families then gathered around the altar, we said a short prayer ( kids were very excited by this time) and sang the San Joao Song after that. Perviz passed around in the traditional way a small little glass with some feni, and everybody said Viva San Joa !!! as the feni went down their throats. The kids by this time were too excited for words and we gave them the green signal to JUMP !!! And there they were spalshing around in the pool, looking so cute with all the colourful flowers around them. The youngest child in there was 2 years old and the oldest, my son 8 years. We taught them the first two lines of the San Joao song and they kept singing it as as they splashed around. The food we cooked for dinner was..Red rice, prawn curry with mango, Kismor, temperada, Pork Vindalho, Gram Ross (curry - Hindu Style), cutlets and of course the feni bottle made its rounds. We also had a sing song session with Perviz playing the 'Ghumat' and my daughter slapping the 'Tambourine' on her thigh. Heh ! I did the Dhekni too, from my good old folk dancing days. We had some karokhe music later and to top it all finally, we had the Football Fever on, with England and Portugal playing, so everyone was shouting, Viva San Joao !!! Viva Portugal !!! We had a great evening, all the four families, including us and all our kids. I wished I was in Goa that evening. That's all folks, Regards to all my Gaobhav's and Ghavbhoins and all your respective families. Zelma De Souza Abu Dhabi

[saligaonet] Communidade de Saligao-II
The Communidade de Saligao-II We are still writing on the background relating to our Communidades. We said that the Goan population descended from 4 races. Yesterday we dealt on the three races the Negritos, Proto-Australoids and the Dravidians. Today we are dealing with yet another race called the Aryans. This race probably is more close to Sallganvkars( Saugaunkars, or Salgaokars, Saligaokars). The Aryans , the last to arrive around 2500 BC and the most martial of our races, subdued the others. They originated possibly from the banks of the Dnieper in what is today Russia. On arrival in India they added a fourth class to their social structure of three classesBrahmin, Kshatriya and Vaishya---that of Sudras. This became the caste system of India. Jose Pereira who is a student of Sanskrit and whose work includes a scholarly treatise on the Konkani language, write lucidly in Song of Goa about Sanskrit, the language of the Aryans phenomenally rich in words and shades of meaning the preeminent cultural speech of the subcontinent through most of its history, and the vehicle of its greatest literary and theological _expression_. The history of ancient Goa is that of contests for power: a succession of dynasties warred among themselves. The loser carried on administration as a feudatory. The Satavahana dynasty ruled in the Deccan around 2nd century BC and annexed Konkan, including the territory held by the Bhojas in Goa. However, they intermarried, leaving the Bhojas free to administer their lands as feudatories. The Satavahanas escorted foreign ships to Broach. Coins found at Chandrapur, modern Chandor in the taluka of Salcete, suggest the ancient commercial glory of this city of the Bhojas. With the fall of the Satavahanas in the 4th century AD sea borne trade diminished . It was restored by the Badami Chalukyas during the 7th century. The Aryanization of Goa began under the Mauryas. The Girnar rock edicts of Ashoka refer to a people known as Pettnikas, Rashtrikas and Bhojas who had settled down in the semi-independent kingdoms on the southern boarder of the Mauryan Empire in Deccan and the Konkan coast. According to Puranic tradition, the Bhojas belonged to the subdivision of Yadavas of the Aryan race of Kaikeyas in the 3rd century BC during Ashokas reign. In post-Vedic Sanskrit literature they figure as a clan of rulers. Although originally governed by the tribal constitution in which authority was vested in the chosen representatives, these selected leaders appear to have eventually become hereditary rulers. The thirteenth edict reveals that these peoples observed Ashokan instructions on morality. The earliest known record of a Bhoja ruler in Goa, King Devraj, was found in South Goa at Siroda. Issued from Chandrapur, this plate dates back to the 3rd and 4th century AD. Written in the Southern Brahmi, it has the royal emblem of the elephant. It records the grant of tolls to two Brahmins, Govindswami and Indraswami, of Bhardwaj gotra, along with a house and some pasture land for cows. The Bhoja rulers of Chandrapur appear to have controlled the area on the west coast beyond Goa. Records of grants by Bhoja kings have been found in the Ponda taluka and in the areas of the Konkan further north and south of Goa ( 2) .. to be continued Compiled by Fr. Nascimento Mascarenhas. [saligaonet] Communidade de Saligao--IV
Communidade de SaligaoIV. We have read in the last posting that Plates of the Konkan Maurya king Anirjitavarman belonging to the sixth or seventh centuries after Christ have been found at Bandora. They concern the ownership of the land by an unnamed Rashtrakuta; the area is distinctively named Kumarzuem and Bardez--- and precisely described using terms such as khazan land which make it unmistakably Goan. Maria Aurora Couto goes further to tell that the Bahmanis moved towards Konkan to safeguard Muslim trading vessels. The powerful Rayas of Khelna and Sangameshwar on the west coast to the north of Goa sent hundreds of boats to attack Muslim ships and plunder pilgrims going to Mecca. These practical raids led to the decline in maritime commerce of the time. Finally the Bahmani emperor sent Mahmad Gavan to the Konkan and Goa was annexed in 1472. The area was then divided into provinces, each with a governor. Some of them revolted, and Yusuf Adil Khan founded the Adil Shahi dynasty of Bijapur in 1489. The squabbling generals divided the spoils of the Bahmani among themselves. In 1500, Goa was unequivocally settled as part of the Adil Shah kingdom after having been buffeted between Vijaynagar and the Bahmanis for several decades. Administration was left to the village ganvkars, and ancient chiefs of mahals( akin to modern taluka) like sardessais and dessais were confirmed in their offices. Dessai is the title of a chieftain which is a corruption of ruler of desh ( territory). They were chieftains appointed by the Adil Shah to look after the various mahals. Their duties included maintaining law and order and collecting revenues. Their position was, however, below that of a governor. But this, too, was to last only one decade. The European invasion began in 1510. Albuquerques armies, followed by traders from all parts of the continent, made Goa their home finding here a lucrative way of life and adventurism. It was from Adil Shah that the Portuguese, under Afonso de Albuquerque, conquered Tiswadi, the island of Goa, in 1510 in collusion with Goan Brahmin chieftains and traders whose fortunes were being affected by Turkish traders monopoly of transoceanic trade, specially in horses. The leaders of this group have been identified as Mhall Pai Vernekar, a powerful and popular sardessai of Verna, and Tamaji, the governor of Honavar and a Vijayanagar admiral. Although Mahall Pai was given a land grant near the capital city, the Portuguese had no intention of sharing power. Twenty-five years later, frustrated ambitions and religious persecution made him conspire with Adil Shah to overthrow the Portuguese. His betrayal was discovered and he had to flee to Cochin where he lived in exile until his death. Timaji was clearly the more wily of the two. Historians are yet to agree whether he was a Maratha, a Kannadiga or a Goan; a Hindu or a Jain; a pirate, a leader of robbers, a man of low birth, a high-ranking officer of the Vijayanagar king who was married to the Princess of Gersoppa, a good man as Albuquerque believed him to be, a willing collaborator, or a quisling. Before Albuquerque had arrived on the scene, Timaji had attempted an investigation of Vasco da Gamas fleet anchored near Anjediva for repairs and provisioning. He had established cordial relations with the first viceroy, Francisco de Almeida, who had no territorial ambitions for the Portuguese. Was Timaji interested in the Portuguese as an ally for Vijayanagar against the Muslim rulers?. Whatever his reasons, he made peace with them and won for himself a cartaz, a permit to sail the waters freely (4) To be continued . Compiled by Fr. Nascimento Mascarenhas (40. [saligaonet] Communidade de Saligao---V
Communidade de Saligao-V We studied that in 1500, Goa was unequivocally settled as part of the Adil Shah kingdom. Administration was left to the village ganvkars, and ancient chiefs of `mahals like sardessai and dessai were confirmed in their offices. The European invasion began in 1510 and it was from Adil Shah that the Portuguese, under Afonso Albuquerque, conquered Tiswadi, the island of Goa. Timaji, the governor of Honavar and a Vijaynagar admiral has established good relations with the first viceroy, Francisco de Almeida, who had no territorial ambitions for the Portuguese. If Timaji attacked ships it was on orders from his king of Vijayanagar, whose ports of Bhatkal and Honavar were loosing trade to Adil Shahs Goa, the favoured port. Ships that disobeyed Timajis instructions to berth at these ports were plundered. When Afonso de Albuquerque, who had territorial ambitions, appeared on the scene, Timaji was able to assure him a victory against Adil Shah. Ambitious and knowledgable, he succeeded in his plans, but his hopes of becoming governor of Goa were thwarted by Albuquerque who had other plans. He was made aquazil mor, chief tanadar, given the power of justice over Hindus and Muslims in the territory and other benefits, all of which he lost and regained in part depending on his relations with Albuquerque, whose gradual distrust of the man deepened. The ganvkars must have felt threatened soon after Albuquerques conquest of Goa Even before the process of conversion was under way, land became an issue with Portuguese settlers wishing to own forest lands and palm groves. A royal proclamation stating that all lands should be distributed to the settlers since they now belonged to the king was strongly resented. Protests by ganvkars led to a rescinding of the proclamation. The ganvkars membership of the communidade was inalienable and exclusive, and could only be transferred to male heirs. No ruler before the Portuguese had tinkered with the communidades. Muslim rulers and the other kings who had ruled over Goa had conferred fiefdoms to loyalist who collected taxes, attended to defence and other matters, but these measures did not impinge on the working life of an ancient agrarian society, as long as the taxes were paid. The duty of tax collection from individuals was taken care of by the ganvkars: each village paid a fixed amount, as land tax through the communidade directly to the ruler. The ganvkars were allowed to continue sharing the residue of the profits as before after all dues were discharged.(5) .. to be continued. Compiled by Fr. Nascimento Mascarenhas.(5). COUTO, Maria Aurora, op. cit., pp.86 163
[saligaonet] Communidade de Saligao--VI
Communidade de Saligao---VI The first encounter of the Portuguese administration with the ganvkari is expressed in an elaborate study of the local tradition by Afonso Mexia in Foral dos Usos e Costumes dos Gaoncares e Lavradores desta Ilha de Goa e Outros Annexos nela.( Charter of Habits and Customs of the the Ganvkars and Non-Ganvkar Workers of the Island of Goa and its Dependencies, 1526)which sets outs the charter of uses and customs of ganvkars and peasants of the island of Goa and other territories annexed to it, that is the gifted territories of Salcete and Bardes which also had their Foral de Salcete e Bardez( Chater of Salcete and Bardez). Here then is the first instance in which, under the guise of codification, the local was brought under the purview of the colonial to empower the latter to comprehend and then exercise subtle changes within an age-old system. But the real disruption of an organic whole began after 1540, when aggressive measures to convert scattered the population, dividing clans and families. In the process, vast quantities of land changed hands; from temples to the church, from those who fled never to return to those who acquiesced perhaps not quite knowing what exactly was in store. As converts they take pride in not having lost their share in the communidade, since all those who fled to escape conversion automatically forfeited their place within the system. Many of these families consist of converts who fled to the outskirts of Goa during the maratha invasions of Bardez between 1654 and 1740, or to escape the excesses of Inquisition which south to change their socio-cultural customs and to suppress konkani. There were some who sought refuge when epidemics threatened their lives. Known as Bardezkars because most of them fled from the villages of Bardez, they are now a small but vibrant Konkani speaking community settled on the Western Ghats in areas of Karnataka and Maharashtra. Their link with Goa is through the village community of their ancestry and the land where some of them still have a share. No matter where he is, the goan villager returns to inscribe his sons name in the communidade register. Since the very sense of self was inseparable from membership of the ganvkari, land became the central issue: they would have lost all if they went into exile; instead they could retain their holdings and could add to it, or in case of kulacharins( outsiders helpers), they could earn the status and rights of membership of the ganvkari. This is the basis of communal harmony in Goa, this system that looked after everyone irrespective of caste. Land and the community spirit bound our ancestors. However, the history of mass conversions as well as individual ones is complex and far removed from the blurred and distorted version that suits contemporary discourse. Archival records illuminate the reconstruction of life and varieties of human experience in those troubled times. Careful analysis of old records would provide insights into social transformations within Goan society and would promote a better understanding of human experience at the time. More importantly, such a study would destroy the basis of political conclusions which are being drawn today based on bare statements of historical fact which do not take into account the human dimension--- the grey areas of experience through which the decision to convert was negotiated(6) to be continued Compiled by Fr. Nascimento Mascarenhas. (6). COUTO, Maria Aurora, op. cit., pp.150-160 163-165
[saligaonet] communidade de Saligao-VII
Communidade de Saligao---VII The Provinces of Bardez and Salcete were ceded to the Portuguese in 1543 by Ibrahim Adi Khan, though the treaty of peace was signed only in 1571. These two territories added to Ilhas, the territory they already had occupied, were known as Velhas Conquistas( Old Conquests). This cession was confirmed in the year 1548-9, when Garcia de Sa was Governor. During the incumbency of Dom Pedro Mascarenhas as Viceroy, 1554-5, the whole enclave, except for the City of Goa and its immediate surroundings, was divided among the Religious Orders. The Dominicans were given fifteen villages in Ilhas, the Jesuits rest of Ilhas and the Province of Salcete. Bardez was entrusted to the Franciscans( Observants). It is generally assumed that this division took place in 1555. In his letter, dated Goa, 6 December1555, Antonio de Quadros S.J., refers to this division and explicitly states that it was made by Dom Pedro Mascarenhas. There are, however, authors who say that the Franciscans already in the years 1550-52 constructed a Church at Verem and dedicated it to the Holy Magi( Reis Magos). There is no doubt that the division of the territory and the official assignment of Bardez to the Franciscans occurred in 1555, but it is possible that before that year the Franciscans were already engaged in this Province. Verem was the first Church built by the Franciscans( 1555) The 450 years celebrations will be held at Reis Magos in 2005 it is known through authoritative sources. Next came Candolim Church in 1560 and also the Church of Nagoa in that same year(1560). The territory under the jurisdiction of Holy Trinity Church of Nagoa was Siolim, Oxel, Anjuna-Assagao, Parra, Nagoa, Arpora and part of Baga and Saligao which Frei Paulo de Trindade, O.F.M. says was one of the principal villages and very large, entirely inhabited by Brahmins, who have all been converted, so that very few or hardly any pagans? are left( Vide, Meersman, Fr. Achilles, O.F.M., The Ancient Franciscan Provinces In India, Bangalore, 1971, p.107).When Frei Paulo de Trindade O.F.M wrote the chronicles of Nagoa, Saligao was christianized and those who did not want to change their religion fled with deities to the territory of Advalpale, in Bicholim taluka then under the Sultan of Sawantwadi in the XVI century. The meticulous Church historian late Msgr Canon F.X. Gomes Catao says That the entire village of Saligao was christianized by the year 1636 and the Communidade de Saligao contributed its mite for the cult at Nagoa Church( Vide Souvenir of Mae de Deus Church, 1873-1973). From 1560 till 1873 Saligao people were taken care of spiritually first by Franciscan Observants and later on from 1767 by the Diocesan priests which continues up to the present day.. The Communidade de Saligao made considerable expenses to the Church of Nagoa from 1813 to 1841 to the tune of 9084:3:15( Vide, Xavier, Filipe Neri, Bosquejo Historico das Communidades, Vol II, p.467.) and till 1961 to Saligao Church. Few years later a fund was created called Church Maintenance Fund(CMF) which support the church and recently the CMF is merged into Fabrica da Igreja de Saligao This back-drop closes with this posting. In subsequent articles we will be speaking specifically of the Communidade de Saligao to be continued. Fr. Nascimento Mascarenhas

[saligaonet] Communidadse de Saligao-IX
Communidade de Saligao---IX. In the Communidade de Saligao, the alimony corresponding to one zon is paid to the only son of a deceased ganvkar. When the male children are more than one, the eldest(son, malgoddo) receives the zon in full and the others receive one half each. This alimony was also extended to the sons of kulacharinsin Saligao Communidade. Some few members of the first five Vangodds of the community of Saligao had, to the exclusion of the other members, the right to celebrate the Festa de Novidades or Novem( Harvest Festival)in August( my time on 7th August ,after the feast of Novem at Salvador do Mundo celebrated on 6th August). In my younger days at least two of my friends (both living) Mr. Caetano Antonio dos Remedios from Tabravaddo now residing in Donvaddo and Mel DSouza from Arrarim/Canada, were Presidents of Festa de Novidades. It is also celebrated now but without the president and if I am not mistaken on 15th August( Vide, Goa Gaunkari The Old Village Associations Vol II by Rui Gomes Pereira, 1981, pp 59, 116 and also Books of the Communidade de Saligao). My comments. The pre-portuguese name of our Village was *Sallganv. In Christianity from XVI century it was *Saliganv( due to cultivation of a rice called *Sali, according to Monsehor Rodolfo Dalgado) and then from XVIII century we got a nickname with the plantation of Sugar canes * Uxelantle Kole* to distinguish from the nick name of Kolo to another family of Saligao, Now the people from Goa simply call us Sauganvkars * kole*. I have still not got an answer as to why only some families of the first five Vangodd with the exclusion of others, as said by Rui Gomes Pereira, celebrated the Feast of Novidade. Werent others agriculturists or was it due this exclusion, the others began to cultivate surgarcane in wards like Mudddavaddi, Mollebhatt, Donvaddo etc till 1945 and earned us a nickname?. The sugar cane plantation certainly took longer period to produce surgarcanes than paddy plantation. I do not know if Mr. Jose Remedios from Tabravaddo/Santa Cruz, Mumbai has celebrated the feast of Novidade .I need his explanation as he knows more about these matters than I. There are different private rules and regulations for inscription of names for matricula de jonos in Communidades in Goa. Saligao has its own private rules for our Communidade and they are unique to our village as well as the age of inscription for both Ganvkars and Kukachars. I have given the surnames of the 12 Vangodd of Saligao and also of Kulacharins. Now the name of a person of that particular surname may not appear in the list of joneiros of that year if he not written his name in person on through proxy and that is why we may not find the names of the particular surname of the person in the list of zonnkars of that particular year. I gave the names on No.VIII posting as found in the matricula de jonos on various Books of the Comunidade de Saligao. Now comes the Souzas in various Vangodds and it is a very big problem. Unless the ganvkars of surname Souza can tell us to which vangor they belong to, then only we will be able to understand who is who in the different Vangodd of Souza surnameProbably the escrivaoof saligao Communidade may solve part of the problem. However could Souzas reading this posting help me to record their vangodds for posterity? Kindly give me the baptismal name and surname and vaddo with indentification of vaddo if possible. I hope some one will take this topic for a paper or even for a degree like PHD . To be continued. Fr, Nascimento Mhas.

[saligaonet] In praise of St. Anne
July 26, In Paise of St. Anne and St. Joaquim, the Grandparents of Jesus The Gospels do not state the names of our Ladys parents but ancient traditions, which go back to the middle of the second century, give them as Anna or Hannah, meaning grace and Joachim, and declare that their daughter Miriam( mary) was born in answer to prayer when they had long been childless. The veneration of St. Anne, the Grandmother, can be traced back to the 4th century in the eastern Church, and to the 8th in the west, but it did not become very general until the end of the 14th century, when the golden Legend of James de Voragine became popular. Her feast was not promulgated for the Universal Church until 1548. St. Anne is the Patroness of Brittany and of the Canadian Province of Quebec, where the shrine of Bonne Sainte Anne at Beaupre is particularly famous. Miners, and women in the labour of birth have recourse to the intercession of Marys mother..Joachim means Yahweh prepares. Ste. Anne de Beaupre Ste. Anne de Beaupre--- sheltered by the snow, Within a gray church, under skies of gray, It seems to me that I can hear you say In vibrant accents, gentle, soft and low--- Kneel at my lighted shrine before you go Back to the careless world so hard and gay It matters not if you have gone astray, I will deliver you from pain and woe If you are bowed with grief and suffering, If you are sore at heart, or strained with sin, Why should you feel this is a hopeless thing? I still can heal and cleanse--- Come in, Come in. And my soul answers, Oh, I know you can, For I have felt your miracle, Ste. Anne! By Frances Parkinson Keyes from The Happy Wanderer. In Praise of St. Anne Hymn to Saint Anne Spotless Anna! Judas glory! Through the church, from East to West, Evry tongue proclaims thy praises, Holy Marys Mother blest. Saintly kings and priestly sires Blended in thy sacred line; Thou in virtue, all before thee Didst excel by grace divine. Linked in bonds of purest wedlock, Thine it was for us to bear, By the favour of high heaven Our eternal Virgin Star. From thy stem in beauty budded Ancient Jesses mystic rod; Earth from thee received the Mother Of thalmighty Son of God. All the human race benighted In the depths of darkness lay, When in Anne it saw the dawning Of the long expected day. Honour, glory, virtue, merit, Be to The, O Virgins Son! With to Thee, O Virgins Son! With the father and the Spirit, While eternal ages run Edward Caswall, from The Dominican Hymn Book published by Burns and Oates, London, 1881. St. Anne , Pray for Us!. [saligaonet] In Praise of St. Anne.
In Praise of St. Anne. ST. ANNE SPEAKS TO HE DAUGHTER MARY. Child of my hearts blood, Fairest Lily of all Israel, Embraced by the Most High, Rapturously pillowed on His Love, Clothed in Glory from the first Sacred Instant of your conception by the Power Of the Spirit of charity! Mary, My Child! Whence is it to me that the Mother of My Lord Should come unto me. Thus Anne spoke and Joachim kept all these things pondering them. In his heart. The days had been so long but at last Heaven had listened and answered with Mary. Collected by Fr. Nascimento Mascarenhas
[saligaonet] History of Don-vaddo--III
History of Donvaddo---III We shall now shift our focus on the life in the ward during the Portuguese regime. The chapel of St. Anne was built in 1843 and Donvaddkars fulfilled their religious obligation there by attending Mass on Sundays. There was, however, a difficulty getting to the Chapel. The road or way through the fields ended near the present culvert across the nullah. One had to cross the nullah a little to the right of the culvert and wind ones way through private property. It was then that Mr. Pedro Damiao Carneiro came to the rescue of Donvaddkars. He was instrumental in constructing the culvert and the road beyond till the door of the chapel( Incidentally Mr. Carneiro served as the treasurer of St. Annes chapel for 16 years from 1879 to 1895). To commemorate this golden moment in the annals of Donvaddo a soul stirring song was composed on the occasion in the local language. We reproduce below the song, courtesy the late Mr. Jose Carneiro and his sister-in-law Mrs. Regina Carneiro: "Ek chefe mukhar soron Kamer-xetant reuniao kelo. Modlean marog dakhoun dilo Sogllenche motint gelo. Khottlantle haddun re renderu Salak marli re bunheadu Donvaddcheo bailo re vochunu Khorem-kuddvi ghetleo re zhomunu Dulpod: Salganvantu zoddim zattai vatte pasun Donvaddkar vencer zale sankov bhandun." CROSSES: There are two majestic crosses in Donvaddo which deserves mention. " Vazancho Khuris" is situated next to the "Vazanchi Baim".During Lent both the young and the old used to gather around the Cross and sing the Stabat Mater. The feast of the Cross was celebrated in the second week of May, with recitation of the rosary, the singing of the litany and ended with distribution of boiled grams( chonne) and feni. The feast of the Carneirancho Khurishowever was not celebrated. It is not clear whether the cross is a clan cross like the Vazancho Khuris or a cross put up by an individual or family. We also have the Holy Cross Chapel, situated in the north in front of a stream. It is a familiar sight to see even today the people of the ward gather around it in May to celebrate the feast, the celebrations ending with the usual Chonne and drink. In 1992 the statue of Our Lady of Valankanni was donated by Mr. Aleixo Fernandes and was installed here and blessed by the Fr. Nazario Godinho, the Parish Priest of Saligao. People from the neighbourhood including hindus, gather there every Saturday to recite the rosary and the novena of Our Lady. There is another cross on the top of the hill. The purpose of building this cross is unknown, but it was/is a sign of penance because with stones on their heads, the villagers of Saligao proceeded from cross to cross, this one included, to ask God Almighty to shower His blessings in the form of rain whenever there was an unusually long dry summer spell..to be continued. HISTORY OF DONVADDOV. TRANPORTATION: In the field of transportation, the distinction goes to Mr. Niceforo Mascarenhas, who owned a caminhao, that plied between Candolim and Mapuca via Saligao, and a taxi which was used to transport passengers to Panjim and Mormugao for their onward journey to Bombay or Africa. The driver of the above vehicles was Krishna Salgaonkar, also known as Kosnulo. Speaking of jewelry fabrication, one cannot forget Railo Xett, the work of whose hands adorned the bridal couple at the time of their marriage. A sibling of Railo, Vasudev is no less adept in jewelry designing. In our days this tradition is carried on by Madhukar, Vasudevs youngest son. And, oh yes, for the cup that cheers as much as it inebriates! Visvonad and Raia distilled quality feni that could compare with the best. Nowadays Atmaram following in the footsteps of his father carries on this occupation with equal distinction. Raia and his son Atmaram also eliminated pigs, by shooting, those that destroyed the paddy-fields, with the mandate of the authorities in Saligao when farming was the main occupation in the village. Donvaddo also gave to the church two important prelates and a provincial and a General of a Society. They are late Bishop Alfred Fernandes and Bishop Charles Gomes, both expired and Fr. Higinio Henriques C Ss R, late Fr. Francisco Sequeira, S.F.X of whom I will speak separately in future. Priests and Religious: Fr. Caetano Nascimento Lobo, Fr. HISTORY OF MUDD-DAVADD. SPORSTMEN; Ramesh Kerkar, Ramesh Gaddi, Patrick DSouza. Like most of the villagers the people of the three wards were mainly agriculturists. Paddy was grown during the monsoon and vegetation during the dry season. Saligao has been famous for sugar-cane plantations which were dens of foxes. It thus gave the villagers the nick- name Saligaoche Kole( Uxelantle Kole). There were plantations of sugarcane in the fields adjoining the wards. The juice of sugarcane, produced by-products of honey , jaggery, bellio and vinegar. The juice extracted from by crushing the sugarcanes by means of a local mechanism called ghanno. The sale of above products in the Ghats brought prosperity to the villagers. Foreigners have acclaimed Goans as Italians of the East in Music. The Parochial School played an important role. A tune is more lasting then the voice of the birds The song is more lasting than the richness of the words. The late Miguel Antonio Remedios ( Tabravaddo/Mudddavaddi) was a renowned teacher of piano and violin. He started a music shop in Calcutta and his descendants have music shops in Bangalore and Margao under the style of Reynolds( Mr. Lawrence Rodrigues our saligaonetter wants to update the geneology of these Remedios, could somebody help him to trace Mr. Miguel Antonio Remediosascendants and descendants ?. [saligaonet] Chapel of St. Anne-Saligao.
Dear Saligaonetters, Though I have some details of the other wards of Saligao I am in a process to collect more relevant data of the other remaining wards. Till then a little patience. Meawhile kindly read what is given below. ST ANNES CHAPEL---SALIGAO. The wards of Mudddavaddi, Donvaddo and Tabravaddo-Mollebhat had a chance to study in some detail the History of St. Annes Chapel in 1992-1993 through the Managing Committee of the150thAnniversary Celebrations, the Administrative Committee of the Chapel and the Souvenir Committee. The findings were placed in the Souvenir of St. Anne Chapel, Saligao( 1843-1993) brought out in the year 1993. For the benefit of the readers and future generations I am giving these details to be archieved in Saligaonet.. Mgr. F.X.Gomes Catao writes in his article" The Church and Chapels of Saligao "in the Souvenir of Mae de Deus Church( 1873-1973), Saligao, the following: " Fr. Miguel Arcanjo Marques of Mudddavaddi, ordained priest in 1792, was nominated chaplain of St. Annes chapel, Saligao, by the order( Portaria) of 2nd July, 1819.". J.Patrocinio de Souza and Alfred DCruz, in their book entitled " Saligao, Focus on a Picturesque Goan Village", wrote: The Chapel of St. Anne was inaugurated on May 3rd, 1843. The Minutes Book of the Chapel of St. Anne, Saligao dated 17th January, 1943 on page 35, in its third paragraph states "that the centenary of the chapel would be solemnized coming 16th May, preceded by a triduum, the Administrative Committee of the chapel seeing to its organization and celebration.". According to what is written in the Minutes Book of 1943 we can clearly say that the Chapel, though existed before, was given a provision and thus inaugurated( founded) in May 1843, and affiliated to Nagoa Church of the Blessed Trinity, the Church of our ancestors. Fr. Vicar of Nagoa in 1843 was Fr. Damiao Francisco da Costa. Place where the chapel is situated: According to last survey of Lands under No. 211, sub-division 10, that we consulted, the chapel is situated in the property Palmar called Batta, It is bound up, in the East, with the property of the heirs of Casmiro de Souza, on the West with the property of Maria Lucinda Valerio Gonsalves, widow of Tome Jose Feliciano Maximo da Lima, on the North with the property of the heirs of Felix Caetano Sebastiao Cordeiro and on the South by St. Annes Road in the ward Mudddavaddi de Saligao.. Oral tradition has it that Mrs. Claudina Cordeiro offered one part of her property to St. Annes chapel and the other part by the forefathers of Mr. Casmiro de Souza. In 1908 when the need came for the extension of the Sanctuary( Capela-Mor) of the chapel, Mr. Joaquim Erasmo Eufemiano Cordeiro and Professora Maria Filomena de Souza had the honour of offering part of their properties for that purpose. The Chapel. It had a very simple façade consisting of two bays. The bottom portion has a central wooden door with its portico and pilasters in indo-baroque style. The middle portion has a window with two niches. The best part however is the top-most part, with its scrolled gable which is tipped by the cross fixed on a cement pedestal with 4 cement decorations which ends in vase with local fruits situated near the scroll The central niche accommodates the statue of St. Anne . Both the towers that flank the frontispiece are square with decorations and the one on the left hand-side as you face the chapel has the belfry with one bell when stuck gives a sharp tone. The entrance door of the corridor leading to the sacristy is topped by a flower design in cement and has a niche The portico was there originally The first on was made of tin sheets but now a square cemented one has made its appearance. This chapel on the CHOGM road is the cynosure of all eyes.to be continued. Fr. Nascimento Mascarenhas.
[saligaonet] St. Anne's Chapel-II
ST ANNES CHAPELII The Corridor: This chapel has only one corridor. As you enter this corridor leading to the sacristy you encounter a door on the right hand side near the entry, with its bowl containing holy water, taking you to rear of the chapel. There is another door that shows you the way to the transept of the chapel and the third door is that of the sacristy. A bowl containing holy water is fixed to the wall near the transept entrance. There are also three staircases ,one showing the way to the choir and another to the pulpit, both these are cemented ,and third wooden staircase takes you to the guests room., reserved for priests above the sacristy.. The corridor has two windows with grills and the wall on the left hand side show a board with names of the donors of the chapel. The notice board is on the right hand side . Previously before entering the choir there was a small enclosure to keep the wooden candle stands. Usually the Chapel meetings are held in this corridor. It is a place where the confradesof the Confraternity of St. Anne too dress for the salves. You also see some benches and an ad hoc altar to offer masses when need arises. It can simply be lifted and carried to the place of celebration of the mass. Below the wooden staircase the case containing the insignia of the Confraternity was kept during my teenage days. A confessional is placed in the corridor after Vatican II rulings came into existence, in late sixties. The Sacristy. It is a small room where the articles required for the services are kept. It is a very simple structure without any art. It is the place where the priests dress for the services to be conducted in the main chapel It is a place where silence is to be maintained. The altar servers too dress in the sacristy with chairs for priests.. It has cupboards containing vestments, sacred books and so on. It has three windows of which two are small on the sides of the middle wall and an entry leading to sanctuary with its holy water bowl. The crucifix in the middle of the sacristy helps to be in prayerful mood. Now lights and fans are provided to the Sacristy as well as the whole chapel. The Internal Discription of the Chapel. The chapel has a nice sanctuary( Capela-Mor), with a transept and finally the nave of the chapel with its choir overhead. It is 35 metres in lengths and 9 metres in breadth with a hight of 16 metres. The ceiling has strong beams and on one of them shows the date of extension of the reformed chapel The side altars in the transept dedicated to Sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary are seen too. Theu appeared in 1926. Formerly to show the division in the chapel there were two rails one in the sanctuary and the other the communion rail separating the nave from the body of the chapel. With new laws in liturgy these rails are removed and also some images and confessionals . The main altar is of 20th century in wood painted brown and the sunlight slipping through the windows helps it to brightens a bit. It is of indo-baroque style. With decorative flowers and plants It has the central niche where the image of St. Anne is kept as well as other niches together with the tabernacle and space to keep the candle sticks as well as panels of flowery decorations The image of St. Anne is said to be offered by the ancestors of Fr. Caetano Antonio Cordeiro ( Mollebhatt). On its right and left niches are the images of St.Joseph and St. Sebastian. Their feast is celebrated on subsequent days( Monday Tuesday)of the feast of St. Anne on 26th if it falls on a Sunday or on a Sunday after the 26th of July. In the upper portion right and left, the statues of our Lady of Remedios offered by Remedios of Tabravaddo and that of St. Bartolomew of the Dodhe gaunkar Fernandes of 10th vangodd of the Communidade de Saligao( Chorao), established in Mudd-ddavaddi. And to remember the date of the renovation of the Sanctuary, a crucifix with the images of mother Mary, St. John and Mary Magdalene, offered by Joaquim Fernandes, nicknamed Raza,( ascendants of Joseph Saint Anne) were placed in the middle of the upper part on 2nd February, 1910 to be continued. Fr. Nascimento Mascarenhas.

[saligaonet] St. Anne's chapel--VI
St.Annes ChapelVI The First Organized Committee of the Chapel. The person who really associated with the "capelistas" of the three wards belonging to the Chapel of St. Anne was Fr. Pedro Gabriel Saldanha, a man of foresight, energetic and dedicated to his task. He was the son of Luis de Saldanha from Arrarim and of Rosa Matias, ordained on 17 th July, 1864, at Rachol Seminary Church, by Archbishop Amorim Pessoa. This Minister of God shouldered the spiritual responsibilities of the Chapel from 1864 to 1867.Till then as there was no formation of a Committee, Fr. Pedro Gabriel Saldanha chose some of the warders( capelistas) to carry on the affairs of the chapel. In an auspicious meeting of bairristas held on 9th March, 1879, it was resolved that the formation of the Committee be established and the first Committee was chosen: President/.chaplain of St. Annes chapel, Fr. Pedro Gabriel Saldanha, Mr. Pedro Damiao Carneiro( Donvaddo) as Treasurer and two members( Vogais), Mr. Joaquim Erasmo Eufemiano Cordeiro( Mollebhatt) and Mr. Manuel Antonio Fernandes( Muddavaddi0. This Committee served from 1879 to 1887. The highlights of what they did was: A)Forward a petition to the Archbishop D. Aires de ornelas e Vasconcelos, dated 1st January, 1879, requesting His Grace to grant the bairristas permission to use white dress( opa branca)and blue cape(murca azul), carry a cross and two candle sticks( cirios)in the chapel of St. Anne and Saligao Church during l;iturgical services. The Archbishop, through Promoter Fr. Domingos Joao R. Pinto, Parish Priest of Panjim informed the members that permission to form an Association and write the Constitution of the chapel of St. Anne and its Confraria( Confraternity) was granted. B) The Statutes or Constitution of the Chapel and Confraria were placed before the bairristas, at a meeting held on 9th March 1879. It consisted of 8 Chapters and 50 Articles. After the reading and explanation of each article, it was approved and signed by the warders. According to this approval confrades were accepted and their number was 60 on the first day( 6th July, 1879) and subsequently the enrollment of members increased. C) On that day itself, Mr. Francisco Xavier Cordeiro from Mollebhatt was chosen to celebrate the President/ Mordomo of the feast of the chapel for the year 1879, authorizing the treasurer to hand over the fixed consignacao( amount of money) to him. On 30th July, 1882, Mr. Joaquim Pascoal Cordeiro ( Mollebhatt0 was nominated member-Secretary of the Committee instead of Mr. Erasmo E.Cordeiro who resigned. On this day the bairristas imposed on the President/Mordomo, the obligation of celebrating salves in the evening and asked the warders to do the illumination. Heavy expenses were incurred and the Committee proposed to fix an amount of 8 tangas to be taken from each Joneiro to defray the expenses. The proposal was accepted in the meeting held on 22nd September, 1882. It was also decided in the meeting not to give articles belonging to the chapel for the particular use of the bairristas Mr. Jose Maria Fernandes( Mudddavaddi0 was chosen as Atorney( Procurador) and deliberated at the meeting held on 21st September, 1884, to take further two tangas of each joneiro for expensesto be continued. Fr. Nascimento Mascarenhas.

ST ANNES CHAPELVIII Highlights of the Committee of 1908 to 1914. A)The Committee sent appeals to people at home and abroad asking for funds for the reform or re-structuring of the Chapel. Income received till 1910 Rs.5402: 8 tangas: 7 Reis. Expenditure for the reform of the Chapel R 5377:2tangas: 4. 1/2reis B)Approval of the Statutes or Compromisso( Rules) of the Confraria de Santa Ana. These were approved on:4th January, 1910. Archbishop D. Mateus DOliveira Xavier approved the Constitution of the Confraria of St. Anne in the Chapel of the same name by a Decree dated 4th January, 1910. The Decree 'interalia' says; The Constitution or Statutes consists of 4 Chapters and 14 Articles. 1.The feast in the chapel should always be celebrated. 2.The Rev. Vicar pro temporeis the Spiritual Director with faculty to aggregate confrades of both sexes and he should do the crowning. 3.The names of the Confrades should be written on a book called" Catalogo da Confraria" 4. 100 days of Indulgence is given to all confrades who say 5 Hail Marys before the image of St. Anne that is venerated on the altar. 5 Any modifications in the statutes should be sent to the ecclesiastical authority for approval. 6.This decree be wholly written in the proper book at Saligao Church and the original handed over to the Confraria da Capela de Santa Ana. Given at Paco Patriarcal in Panjim, on 4th of January, 1910 under Our sign and seal+ Matheus, Archbishop Primate, Patriarch of East Indies. The Statutes are written in Portuguese and were approved by Patriarch D. Matheus on 4th January, 1910 as said above.. In Saligao ,the various confraternities in Chapels and Church( Confraria de Mae de Deus), have their own compromisso(rules)which are approved by decree No. 74 of May 6, 1909: also that of Our Lady of the Victory, of the extinct chapel of the same name and Confraternity of Children(sic)and written in the book of the Church. They are the particular rules for each Confraria. The Confraternity of Santo Caetano and of Our Lady of Flight( Fuga) of Arrarim has its compromisso( rules) approved by the order No. 1795 of 17-7-1933 and published in Boletim Oficial( Official Gazette) No. 62 of 1933. . A word of caution: No Confraternity can be reduced to an Association and no rules( compromisso) of the Confraternity can be changed without the approval of the Archbishop. Now new rules regarding General Statutes of Confrarias( rules) are approved according to the draft sent by the Diocesan Authority to Confrarias in the Archdiocese. The Confrarias were also asked to send their "particular compromissos"( particular statutes)based on a model(draft) sent to the confrarias and were asked to sendtheir 'compromisso' to Archbishops house by June 2004. Quite a number, I believe have not sent, so the date is extended till October 2004.Hence the previous particular compromissos or rules which are unique to Confrarias still stand till they are approved by the Archbishop. There is a proposal that the various confrarias in the churches should come under one Confraria namely under the patron of the church or chapel So far they have not come under one banner, but there are exceptions and Aldona is a pointer. The Synodal documents has recommended to have one confraternity in each Church of the name of its Patron or Patroness. But it is a hard nut to crack in some Churches when there are more than one Confraria and hence the delay. I feel. No other body including the parish Councils, can ask the Archbishop for modification of rules of a particular confraria. If need be the modifications of the rules should come only from the confrades of that particular confraria and such modifications should not be done in a hurry and hence the authorities have extended the date. A proper study by all confrades of that particular Confraria is a must and every detail should be made cle explained clearly and approval taken and a time set, (in this case, it is October 2004)for the approval by the Bishop as the final authority of this modification or suppression is only the Archhbishop and without his approval no Confraternity can be suppressed or reduced to an Association and made public before Archbishops approval. As a rule all the confrarias with its compromisso are approved by the Bishop and their statutes are asked to be written in the Church Book and original handed to the respective confraria of the church and chapels and made public thereafter The Rev. Vicar is the Spiritual Director of the Confraria and not its President. However he is the head of the Fabrica which is another body of the church with its own rules and Regulations. Parish Council is another body, but cannot meddle with the functions of the Confraria nor Fabrica as such In our new set up after Vatican II and Synod of Goa such changes are recommended . Therefore they are to be properly explained before sending for approval by the diocesan

For I am that angel who hath offered up your prayers and alms before God, and am now sent to you, that I may inform you, that a daughter will be born unto you, who shall be called Mary, and shall be blessed above all women. " She shall be, immediately upon her birth, full of the grace of the Lord, and shall continue during the three years of her weaning in her fathers house, and afterwards, being devoted to the service of the Lord, shall not depart from the temple, till she arrives to years of discretion. In a word, she shall there serve the Lord night and day in fasting and prayer, shall abstain from every unclean thing, and never know any man; " But being an unparalleled instance without any pollutions or defilement, and a virgin not knowing any man, shall bring forth a son, and a maid shall bring forth the Lord, who both by his grace and name and works, shall be the Saviour of the world. " Arise therefore, and go up to Jerusalem, and when you shall come to that which is called the golden gate( because it is gilt with gold), as a sign of what I have told you, you shall meet your husband, for whose safety you have been so very much concerned. " When therefore you find these things thus accomplished, believe that all the rest which I have told you, shall also undoubtedly be accomplished. " According therefore to the command of the angel, both of them left the places where they were, and when they came to the place specified in the angels prediction, they met each other. " Then, rejoicing at each others vision, and being fully satisfied in the promise of a child, they gave due thanks to the Lord, who exalts the humble. [saligaonet] *th September Universal Feast of the Nativity of Our Lady--I
8th September Universal Feast of the Nativity of Our Lady..I The Gospel of the Birth of Mary is described in the so-called " lost" books of the Bible---and in the Protevangelium of St. James the Less . I prefer to quote it exactly as it was written centuries ago. " And it came to pass, that when the feast of the dedication drew near, Joachim, with some others of his tribe, went up to Jerusalem, and at that time , Issachar was the high-priest; " Who, when he saw Joachim along with the rest of his neighbours, bringing his offering, despised both him and his offerings, and asked him, " Why he, who had no children, would presume to appear among those who had? Adding, that his offerings could never be acceptable to God, who was judged by him unworthy to have children; the Scripture having said, Cursed is every one who shall not beget a male in Israel. " He further said, that he ought first to be free from that curse by begetting some issue, and then come with his offerings into the presence of God. " But Joachim being much confounded with the shame of such reproach, retired to the shepherds, who were with the cattle in their pastures; " For he was not inclined to return home, lest his neighbours, who were present and heard all this from the high-priest, should publicly reproach him in the same manner. " But when he had been there for some time, on a certain day when he was alone, the angel of the Lord stood by him with a prodigious light. " To whom, being troubled at the appearance, the angel who had appeared to him, endeavouring to compose him said: " Be not afraid, Joachim, nor troubled at the sight of me, for I man angel of the Lord, sent by Him to you, that I might inform you, that your prayers are heard, and your alms ascended in the sight of God. " For he hath surely seen your shame, and heard you unjustly reproached for not having children: for God is the avenger of sin, and not of nature; " And so when he shuts the womb of any person, he does it for this reason, that he may in a more wonderful manner again open it, and that which is born appear to be not the product of lust, but the gift of God " For the first mother of your nation, Sarah, was she not barren even till her eightieth year: and yet even in the end of her old age brought forth Isaac, in whom the promise was made a blessing to all nations. " Rachel also, so much in favour with God, and beloved so much by holy Jacob, continued barren for a long time, yet afterwards was the mother of Joseph, who was not only Governor of Egypt, but delivered many nations from perishing with hunger. " Who among the judges was more valiant than Samson, or more holy than Samuel? And yet both their mothers were barren. " But if reason will not convince you of the truth of my words, that there are frequent conceptions in advanced years, and that those who were barren have brought forth to their great surprise: therefore Anna your wife shall bring you a daughter, and you shall call her name Mary; " She shall, according to your vow, be devoted to the Lord from her infancy, and be filled with the Holy Ghost from her mothers womb; " She shall neither eat nor drink anything which is unclean, nor shall her conversation be without among the common people, but in the temple of the Lord; that so she may not fall under any slender or suspicion of what is bad. " So in the process of her years, as she shall be in a miraculous manner born of one that was barren, so she shall, while yet virgin, in a way unparalleled, bring forth the Son of the most High God, who shall be called Jesus, and, according to the signification of his name, be the Saviour of all nations. And this shall be a sign to you of the things which I declare, namely, when you come to the golden gate of Jerusalem, you shall there meet your wife Anna, who being very much troubled that you returned no sooner, shall then rejoice to see you. " When the angel had said this he departed from him to be continued. Compiled by Fr. Nascimento Mascarenhas.
[saligaonet] St. Anne's Chapel-XX.Report on the Closing Ceremony of the 150th Anniversary-II
ST ANNES CHAPEL---XX REPORT ON THE CLOSING CEREMONY OF THE 150TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE CHAPEL---II ( CONTINUATION). Finally dawned the 16th of May 1993 which saw the closing of the 150th Anniversary of St. Anne chapel. The solemn High Mass in the open air where a tastefully decorated stage was put up for the purpose. On the back-drop, the anniversary theme " Sant Anache Mozotin Hatant Hat Ghalun Jezu Sangata Fuddar Tankum-ia" was displayed in large letters. Msgr. Caetano Cruz Fernandes, Vicar General of the Archdiocese was the main celebrant during the festive mass that was held at 5.30 p.m.. He was assisted by Frs. Nazario Godinho, Nascimento Mascarenhas, John DSilva, Cecil Fernandes, Cedric Fernandes, Edwin DSouza, Joao DCosta, Xavier Pinto, Urbano Menezes,Stephen Fernandes, Orlando R. de Santana and Joaozinho Rebello. The Vicar General in his homily gave a brief yet detailed history of Christianity in Saligao and exhorted his listeners to hold on to the faith of our elders. He also said that it is our turn now to carry the torch of faith into the future and together with Jesus, through the intercession of St. Anne, we can achieve this. He devoted a major part of his homily to highlight the life and work of St. Anne. A notable feature during offertory was the offering of the replicas of Holy Trinity Church of Nagoa,( the church of our ancestors to which the Chapel of St. Anne was affiliated), Mae de Deus, Saligao( to which church it was affiliated since 26h Nov., 1873) and St. Annes Chapel, our own Chapel. The commentator Mr. Carmino Mascarenhas led the Congregation in prayer and explained the various parts of the Mass. After Communion, the Chairman of the Organizing Committee, Fr. Nascimento Mascarenhas handed over the Paschal Candle to the Chairmen/ Chairpersons of the various Committees to carry the light of the Rizen Lord into the future now that the Anniversary Year was drawing to a close. The choir under the leadership of Mr.Orlando Vaz did well in leading the congregation to sing and worship the Lord. After the mass all those gathered were served snacks and cake. Then came the moment all were eagerly waiting for: cutting the Anniversary cake and the release of the Souvenir. In the absence of Fr. Francisco Xavier Sequeira ( a Donvaddkar and the only surviving member of the Commission constituted to re-organize the Pilar Society, who had expressed his inability to attend the function), Fr. Nascimento Mascarenhas cut the Anniversary cake to the nostalgic singing of " Uddon Gelem" by all those present. Those who spoke on the occasion were Fr. Nascimento Mascarenhas, the Vicar General, Msgr. Caetano C. Fernandes and Dr. Wilfred DSouza, then Deputy Chief Minister of Goa. Mr. David and party rendered two choral items which were well appreciated. Finally the Vicar General released the Souvenir. The Secretary Mr. Joe Fernandes proposed a Vote of Thanks. Mrs. Emmie Siqueira compered the function. The Goa Police band was in attendance throughout the whole evening. The Celebrations came to a close with a dazzling display of fire works. By Orlando B. Lobo N.B. No sooner the function came toan end, Dr. Wilfred DSouza received a telephonic call which surprised all that he was appointed the Chief Minister of Goa andsomeone said " It was a favour granted to Dr. Willy through the intercession of St. Anne "and everybody rushed to congratulate him. Compiled by Fr. Nascimento Mascarenhas.

[saligaonet] St. Annes Club of Saligao in Mumbai--I
In RetrospectionSaligoa Village *ST ANNES CLUB OR KUDD IN BOMBAY---OFFSHOOTS OF SALIGAO VILLAGE COMMUNIDADE.*...I. In the major cities of Bombay( Mumbai), Calcutta( Kolkata), Karachi , East Africa, etc., Goans founded their own Clubs. Such clubs known among the Goans as " KUDD" exist in the City of Mumbai with a small sprinkling of their kind and in other urban centres of goan settlements. It should be clearly noted that these clubs have been founded by goan christians. O.E.Baptista who made a research study of the Goan club-life in Mumbai in 1958 considers the following to be the principal objectives. 1. To promote unity and mutual assistance among members. To maintain premises in which the members may reside .To promote, organise and conduct Provident Scheme for the benefit of the deceased members families by payment at death( of a sum of money). To promote, organise and maintain other schemes of mutual benefits for other purposes. 5 To co-operate with other Goan Clubs and Institutions for the promotion of the interest, social, moral or economic of the members, 6. To promote devotion to the Patron or Patroness( of the village or ward) The following are privileges of a member. A right to reside in the Club. To participate in the deliberations and activities of the Club, A right to have his grievances redressed, Is entitled to join the Death Benefit Fund, A right to be elected to the Manager-ship of the Club Is entitled to a loan from the club according to conditions laid down which vary from Club to Club. To have his wife or a relative reside in the club to look after him in time of illness. His family, if they are visiting Bombay may be allowed to stay for a fixed period rent-free. The Managing Committee works honorary, its duties being as follows: to collect rent. To settle minor disputes To maintain accounts To manage the premises To look after members welfare e.g. if he is sick, send for the doctor, arrange for him to be taken care of, etc. Santa Ana Saligao Club Bombay( 1850) Santa Ana Saligao Sports Club , Bombay( 1944). A Brief Sketch of these clubs. There was one Kudd or Club called Santa Ana Club, Bombay, founded in 1850, and Santa Ana Saligao Sports Club, Bombay, established in 1944 by Saligaunkars from Saligao, Goa residing in Bombay.. The history of this old Club was written by the late Mr. Jose Carneiro from Donvaddo,(on 02-08-1992) who had been the last Secretary of this Club and handed over to Fr. Nascimento Mascarenhas, the Chair-man of the 150th Anniversary Celebration of St. Annes chapel, Saligao on 4thAugust, 1992. He was 82 years old in 1992,when death snatched him unfortunately on 11th August, 1992(seven days later). It was written in konkani and as a mark of respect to his memory it was reproduced ipsis verbis in Souvenir St. Anne Chapel Saligao, 1843-1993 for the benefit of Bairristas. In my next posting I will translate it in English for the sake of our Saligao brothers and sisters on Saligaonet.. To be continued Compiled by Fr. Nascimento Mascarenhas.
[saligaonet] The Saligao Union Bombay--I
THE SALIGAO UNION-BOMBAY---I We have read that St. Annes Club began circa 1850 in Mumbai . It was an offshoot of The Communidade de Saligao. However it has to be closed in early fifties and money kept in the safe custody of the Committee of Capela de Santa Ana, Saligao, to say an annual mass for the intentions of the members on Sunday, after the feast of St. Anne which in Saligao is celebrated on or after 26th July This mass of Bomboikars is been celebrated in our present times. The late Mr. Alfred J.DSouza, the President of Saligao Union, Bombay in an article entitled " DOWN THE AGES" has given us the history of beginning of The Saligao Union Bombay and how it got started in that metropolitan city and who was responsible for its establishment, and what is its present status. For the sake of our Saligao netters I am reproducing the article ipsis verbis. " It is generally believed that the earliest Goan emigrants set sail for Bombay some time during the Portuguese possession of the island. They came along with the Franciscans braving the seas in " patmars" ( sailing vessels) which took over a week to make the voyage from Goa to Bombay. It is surmised that a few Saligaocars were among them though there is no authoritative information about this. It is known, however, that the early Goan emigrants resided mainly at Mazagaon and Cavel, and for generations their religious and social life was confirmed mainly to those areas. In course of time when their ranks swelled after the middle of the nineteenth century and thereafter on account of increasing emigration from Goa, there was much activity at Cavel and nearby Dabul in the social, cultural and educational spheres. And so it was that Saligaocars held their first Social in the Catholic Library Hall at Cavel about the year 1915. That function was a prelude to similar Socials in later years but, for want of an organisation these Socials were held only sporadically. However, it appears that a Social Committee was formed some time in 1933 and a Social organised in December that year. In the following year, the Social Committee with Augusto Saldanha as President, arranged a Social on Dec. 16, at the I.L.I. Hall, Dabul. These two functions were successful events as the members of the Committee had applied themselves to the task of establishing personal contacts with as many Saligaocars as possible and had enthusiastically expended much energy over the arrangements. The main burden of arranging the functions appears to have fallen on Richard Durant, Joint Secretary of the Committee, who, by all accounts, worked indefatigably and sincerely for the cause of the organisation both at the time of the Social Committee and later when the Saligao Union was formed. From a manuscript( carefully preserved but now turned to a golden hue) of the speech addressed by Augusto Saldanha to the social gathering on Dec. 16, 1934, it appears that the idea had already been mooted of establishing an association in Bombay to be called " The Saligao Union", and that at a preliminary meeting held sometime prior to the Social to discuss the matter, it had been received to take early steps to form the Union. The Union as envisaged then was to take a broad perspective and not restrict itself only to Saligaocars resident in Bombay, but to embrace all Saligaocars wherever residing. In fact, this has been the approach of Saligaocars in Bombay, that is, to keep their Union open to admission of all Saligaocars. Even today, a Saligaocar from London or Toronto or Nairobi or any other place could become a member of the Saligao Union, Bombay. Their common hearth and home has struck chords deep enough in the heart of Saligaocars to urge them to take all their co-villagers in their organisational fold..to be continued. By Mr. Alfred J. D'Souza Compiled by Fr. Nascimento Mascarenhas.
[saligaonet] The Saligao Union, Bombay-II
THE SALIGAO UNION, BOMBAY---II (CONTINUATION). The idea to have The Saligao Union appears to have been given considerable thought as can be seen from the fact that Augusto Saldanha made certain suggestions in his speech as to what the aims and objects of the suggested Union might be, adding that a public meeting of Saligonenses" in Bombay would have to be conveyed in order to give proper shape to the proposed Union. Apparently Augusto Saldanha and his dedicated Committee paved the way for the ultimate formation of the Union. Augusto Saldanha was in his early sixties when the Social Committee was formed and appears to have been a man of imposing appearance endowed with foresight and organising ability which he put to good advantage in promoting the legitimate interests of Catholics in Santa Cruz, Bombay, among whom he thereby earned a sobriquet of " Governor Saldanha". A Notable Event. The idea of forming an Union had been conceived and suggestions made as to how best that object could be achieved. But the significant step to give the idea a concrete shape and make it a reality was taken only in 1936. It was widely publicised that a mass meeting of Saligaocars would be held for the purpose of considering the need to form an Union to represent them and promote their welfare and accordingly the meeting took place on June 7, 1936 in the St. Sebastian Goan High School Hall in Dabul. The man who guided the proceedings with great tact and confidence and instilled in the gathering hopes of success in the venture they were about to undertake was Octavius Gomes, M.B.E. who became the first President of the Saligao Union. It is worth recounting the aims and objects of the Union as they appeared in the Constitution adopted at that time:- 1.To offer a Mass in Bombay on the first Sunday of May every year in honour of Nossa Senhora Mae de Deus. 2. To promote the moral, social, intellectual and material welfare of the people of Saligao, wherever residing. 3. To hold the Annual Social Gathering. 4. To afford relief to destitute people of Saligao resident in Bombay. 5.To afford educational facilities whenever possible, to poor and deserving students from Saligao. By Mr.Alfred J. D Souza Compiled by Fr. Nascimento Mascarenhas.
[saligaonet] The Saligao Union, Bombay-III
THE SALIGAO UNION, BOMBAY---III( CONTINUATION) The first Sunday in May every year is the Feast-day in Saligao in honour of our patroness, Mae de Deus. Saligaocars have, therefore, always endeavoured, wherever they may be, to observe this day as of special significance and to offer a Thanksgiving Mass. This great love and devotion to the patroness manifesting itself on the Feast-day is nurtured by the belief that she has showered many blessings on the people of Saligao. This is not surprising considering the fact that the statue of Mae de Deus believed to be over 400 years old was regarded as miraculous by the people of Goa even when it adorned the main altar of the Church in Saligao. Thus, one of the obligations imposed in the Constitution of the Saligao Union, namely, to offer a mass on the feast-day only accentuated a long-standing observance by our people in Bombay. The Union Stalwarts. The task to keep the Union active and vibrant and managing its activities has been the burden of the Managing Committees for these many years. If on scans the names of members of the Managing Committee from year to year, one cannot fail to notice the names of persons who have exerted themselves by sacrifice and service for long periods of time on behalf of the Union. They have willingly devoted much time and energy to the affairs of the Union in a city where the rat-race left them but a limited amount of leisure. Sadly, some of these stalwarts have ere now departed, leaving behind an example for succeeding generations to emulate. A man that comes readily to mind is that of Dr. Eric de Melo who was President of the Union from 1945 to 1948 and again from 1957 to the Silver Jubilee 1960. He guided the Union with great tact and skill combined with unfailing courtesy. The enthusiastic workers of the Union did not rest content with merely arranging the feast-day celebration and the Annual Social. The activities of the Union in the first twenty-five years have been covered at some length in the Silver Jubilee Souvenir brought out in 1960. The Silver Jubilee year itself was marked by a ball at the GreensHotel. In the last twenty-five years, the financial position of the Union has been considerably strengthened and is in a better state now than in 1960. The number of patrons has also steeply increased owing chiefly to conversion from other categories of membership. The educational aid programme has been progressive in its outlay. At present we have a good number of Scholarships and prizes being awarded to our children in addition to educational assistance. Functions have been organised to augment the funds of the Union; an Open Air Ball, a Konkani drama, another Ball styled Grand Saligao Ball; an enjoyable picnic was also arranged. Sports too got attention when the Union sponsored a football team in 1965 in the inter-village Goan League and Tournament. In 1966 the Union football team participated in four tournaments conducted by the Goan Sports Club. In one of these it reached the quarter-final. The idea of awarding scholarships began gaining ground in 1976 when an appeal was issued for contributions to Manuelinho Mendonca Scholarship Fund. Much effort was put in by some of the dedicated members to collect the necessary funds; and when further appeals for endowments were made, the Union received substantial funds from philanthropic minded persons towards more scholarships and prizeto be continued. By Mr. Alfred J. DSouza. and compiled by Fr. Nascimento Mascarenhas..
[saligaonet] The Saligao Union, Bombay--IV.
THE SALIGAO UNION, BOMBAYIV( CONTINUATION). The Union has proved a boon on occasions when any cause on behalf of our dear village of Saligao has had to be promoted. In 1969 and even earlier it began to be felt that the continued maintenance of the Church in Saligao had to be ensured. Availability of funds from the Comunidade for that purpose was becoming an uncertain proposition. There were straws in the wind to indicate that the old order was changing faster than expected and there was even talk that the old Comunidade building in Cotula, Saligao might be converted into a dharamasala. In view of the prevailing situation our people decided to collect funds. There was a drive in this behalf in Bombay under the aegis of the Saligao Union for a Church Maintenance Fund and there was a similar Fund being already built up in Saligao. In Bombay donations were collected by door-to-door visits and some members sacrificed much of their leisure to devote themselves to this task; the names of A.J.Souza Lewis and Fernando Lobo are to be particularly mentioned in this connection. The Church Maintenance Fund, Bombay, being separately managed from the Union, remits monies to Saligao to help defray a part of the expenses of the Church establishment there and to meet some maintenance expenses of the Church building. The Union again joined hands with the people of Saligao in connection with the Centenary celebrations of our Church in 1973. As the celebrations would involve a great deal of expenditure, the Union staged early in 1973 a Konkani drama in Bombay in aid of the Centenary Celebration Fund which netted a substantial sum. Part of this sum was invested in a book entitled " SaligaoFocus on a Picturesque Goan Village" commonly called the History of Saligao, and the proceeds of this book were earmarked for the Centenary expenses and projects. The onerous task of writing this book was undertaken by two members of the Union as a part of the Union effort in the cause of the centenary celebrations. For these two authors, namely , the late Prof. J. Patrocinio de Souza and Alfred D' Cruz, it was a labour of love but the product that ensued from their hands was meritorious work indeed in the field of Goan history with an accent on Saligao, its church and people. The book came to be selected for the Library of Congress and other important research libraries in the U.S.A. It might be recalled here that this book also draws attention to a few Saligaocars who attained international or all-India fame. There are several others who made a mark in the medical and other professions in Government and in the Church, in education and social work, in music and sports and other spears. There is an intimate link between Saligao, Saligaocars and the Saligao Union. The union without Saligao and its children would be like an oyster without the pearl. The account of the Unions contribution towards the centenary celebration would not be complete if mention were not made of the Konkani concert directed by Oslando de Souza and staged on the Church grounds in May 1973.There were intensive rehearsals in Bombay followed up in Saligao before the final performance. The exquisite rendering of folk song and dance as well as the able direction of the mass choir by Oslando won encomiums from one and all and the concert was a great success.to be continued. [saligaonet] The Saligao Spirit in Britain---I.
THE SALIGAO SPIRIT IN BRITAIN.---I Mr. Jonh G. Carneiro from Donvaddo who lives in London is an educationist of long standing and a prominent member of the Saligao Association in Britain. He displays The Saligao Spirit of the eighties in Queen Ezibeth IIs Kingdom for us to re-live or sing Those were the Days Since then much water has flown down the River Thames and in our present days Mr. Tony Blair, PM of Britain blares the trumpet at 10 Downing Street blowing a new spirit in the heart of the British and our " AMCHE" who has mingled in that culture sing not only the British National Anthem but equally praises Mae de Deus, their patroness invoking her through their the Saligao Hymn O Brilhante e a estrela" of course with the sounds of sugar-canes trumpets. From belios to pounds'The Saligao Spiritstill permeats around the hearth of every Saligaokar over there . Oncemy mind and heart was enveloped in that Spirit in London in early eighties where from close quarters I had a dheko of that spirit hovering over our Amche de Saligao Now my almost dried spirit is been revived by this article of Professor Carneiro. Read carefully . This is how he puts ,The Saligao Spirit in Britain, in one of his numerous nostalgic writings . " When my daughter looked up from her files to remark, " I am beginning to enjoy this", I was happy for her. She was organising the Saligao Childrens Party and obviously, getting a kick out of it. Community service carries with it its own reward. Similar good fortune befell me last year. I was part of a committee entrusted with reviewing the membership lists: With me was the venerable octogenarian, A .P. de Souza, OBE, a generation away, two recent graduates into the ranks of the Senior Citizens, the papabile Patru Abreo and the ageless Ambrose Remedios while on the right side of the age divide were Tome DSouza, Zef DSouza, Patrick Dantas and John Baptist D Souza. It was a feast of notes and anecdotes as we bridged the gap and geography reminiscing on the good times in Saligao, Bombay, Kenya and Uganda in an effort to trace by name, surname or nickname (!) the well nigh 500 members that grace the registers of the Saligao Association in Britain. Together with their wives, husbands and children we are well over a thousand strong and only senility can deny us the pleasure of rekindling memories whenever we see these faces at our socials year after year. Such joys are fair reward for involvement in ones community. It makes even the brickbats bearable. The involvement of Saligaocars is legendary. There is no such thing as a solitary Saligaocar. Let two Saligaocars bump into each other in a foreign land and away they go in search of a third. Then, before you can say Sakaram, a committee is formed, the fest is on ( ani tea bhair fogo !)The climax is reached with a high pitched patriotic rendering of " O Brilhante a Estrela" ! Something like that very nearly happened in London way back in 1955-56. I had met Francis Newton, the artist, and Ralph D Sousa, who was reading a Bar, among a couple of others when Fr. Edwin DSouza came over. Of course, Saligao was very much on our minds and the " fast" very nearly came off when Fr. Edwin introduced me to a certain Fr. Fox( no less !) who was chaplain to four hundred Goan seamen at the docks!..to be continued. Compiled by Fr. Nascimento Mascarenhas.
[saligaonet] The Spirit of Saligao in Britain-II
THE SALIGAO SPIRIT IN BRITAINII.( CONTINUATION). A lot of water has gone down the Thames since then and the credit for getting a viable group of Saligaocars going must go to another group of DSouzas viz. Vemy, Camilo, Llwelyn among others. The community has grown and it will delight all to know that, perhaps next to Bombay, we have a most wholesome grouping abroad, representative of every vaddo and vangodd. You name them, we have them; Cordeiro, Coelho, DCruz, Danta, da Gama, DMello, DSouza, Fernandes, Mascarenhas, Moniz, Remedios, Saldanha, Vaz, et al. But what makes the Saligaokar tick? It is this involvement. That community spirit, which every common Saligaocar appears to possess in an uncommon degree and which makes our association the envy of many others. It is, I believe, a special grace that was gifted to our forefathers and to their sons and daughters by our patroness, Mae de Deus, in return for seeking her patronage. Nothing else will explain the phenomenal progress of the parish and its people during its brief history. And only 50 years after Bombay kindled the flame, the torch of Saligao unity burns brightly on five continents around the globe ! It is this spirit that sustains us in difficult times and it is this soul force that drives Saligaocars on to pastures new to serve their fellowmen beyond parochial boundaries and across the confines of colour, creed and country. This is the true gauncar to whom jubilees are dedicated. The founders lay the foundation-stones, but it is the common gauncar, the ordinary member who by his activity and interst sustains the edifice. And so that this good work might carry on, the call is for more active members . Not a call merely for Life Members but for more life in our members! The ideal gauncar worth his salt, gives twice as much as he takes. Not for him the nit-picking critica and the ex-cathedra pontifications of the armchair politicos in their balconies or the smug complacency of the " Im alright Jack snobs. On the contrary, he is the one who is a good neighbhour, the catholic in action, the member on duty taking his turn whenever occasion demands to man the turnstiles or serve on committees, or on councils, in chapels or in the panchayat. To serve willingly is to thank God for the gift of exhilarating involvement. It behoves us, therefore, to nurture this great gift, to recognise it in our youth and in the programmes of our Youth Clubs and more pertinently as a fitting memorial to this Jubilee to set up the missionary and the funds to see that the Saligao Spirit is propagated and perpetuated through out youth. By John G. Carneiro. Compiled by Fr. Nascimento Mascarenhas.

SALIGAO SPORTS AND SPORTSMEN OF YESTERYEARS---I. Mr. Eutropio Pinto whom I had a chance to meet and talk frequently at his residence opposite Peggys corner, in Arrarim de Saligao ,was a good cricketer in his hay days in Uganda and cognoscente of sports and its various disciplines. He highlights the sporting activity of Saligao Sportmen of his times in his article, which was published in the Souvenir of the Mae de Deus Church during its centenary in 1973 . I felt it gives sufficient exposure to the talent prevalent in Saligao then , and elsewhere, and I hope our sportmen of to-day will make an effort to know their contribution to the game and emulate their example. This is how Mr. Eutropio Pinto begins his article. "The days have passed into weeks, weeks have elapsed into months, months have rolled into years, and we have come to the centenary year of our Church of Mae de Deus from 1873 to 1973. Apart from producing eminent sons, in politics, journalism, medicine, ophthalmology, law, commerce etc. the village has not lagged behind in all kinds of sports. We have had a galaxy of sportsmen spread through out the world whose performance are greatly admired by the leading sportsmen in the world and whose names have been recorded in the newspapers and sports magazines. The giant performances of a few top players were near international standard and one did reach that pinnacle in Hockey, and their skill and ability in the games they played were widely publicized. It would be tedious if I attempted to mention all the sportsmen who have brought laurels to the village. On the other hand, should I fail to name a few of the very best quality, then I should not be doing justice to their memory. Therefore I have decided to mention their names at the end of this article. The cream of Saligao sporstmen was mainly concentrated in the big cities of India and East Africa, where they had brilliant sporting activity. At one time we could raise independent sides at cricket and hockey, at different stations, and play other communities, combined or singly. Wherever Saligao eleven played, they always commanded respect and admiration and rarely tested defeat. When we played European clubs we were entertained lavishly and treated with dignity as real sportsmen, both on and off the fields. Our conduct and mannerism were greatly appreciated and lauded by the host teams. About 40 years ago, there was no organised form of sports in the village and present day opportunities and facilities were non-existent but the flame of enthusiasm and love for sports grew brighter and brighter in spite of the difficulties surrounding us, chiefly of proper equipment, transport and playing grounds. We used wooden planks or branches of oak-trees for bats, twine ball and bamboo sticks for wickets, and any piece of ground for pitch. We had the batting gloves or pads. So when the twine ball hit you on the skin, the fearful pain lasted for days and days.---Footbal---Once the bladder was spoiled , we used to fill the leather case with hey, drum-sticks, palm-leaves etc. We had to repeat this process once or twice a week, as the ball used to go soft after about 22 players kicking the ball towards one goal, with two backs and a goalkeeper against them. But when migrated to countries outside India, we had the proper equipment and other facilities at our disposal, we developed our natural aptitude fast enough to take command of the game we played"..to be continued. SALIGAOSPORTS AND SPORTSMEN---II. The following earlier and later giants who have made headlines and gained glorious fame in sports activities, which are hard to beat are the following; according to Mr. Eutropio Pinto. " CRICKET.".---The Gama brothers, Humberto, Carlito and Fancu--- tall, upright, elegant and very fine cricketers. Played free and aggressive cricket and played strokes all round the wickets with grace and ease. They were a powerful force in village eleven, which was more than a match for any other village team. Anthony S. de Mello---described as the " Grand Mogul of Sports, the doyen of sports administrator, a fast bowler. He converted the cricket Quadrangular Tournament of Bombay into a Pentangular Tournament by forming a " Rest" team which he himself captained. He was responsible for putting India on the Cricket Map of the World. Antonio Joao D Mello( " pitis")---A mighty hitter at cricket. Perhaps the greatest Saligao has ever produced. Graciano DSouza---Fast bowler; Ozoline DSouzaSpinner of high quality; A.P. DMello---A cricketer of reputecreated sensation as a batsman at Nairobi, Kenya.. Eutropio Pinto, has two following records to his credit in the principal tournament at Uganda known as Triangular and Quadrangular Cricket Tournament. He took 8 wickets for 16 runs against Indians. In Quadrangular Tournament he took 6 wickets for 21 runs against Europeans. In this regard I quote from " Uganda Cricket" written by J.V.Wild, a cricketer of repute and a critic, and also the man who bowled Don Bradman early in his innings in 1936---" E. Pinto and Leo Gama in cricket and hockey have been outstanding during the year. I do not use superlatives, but Pintos 64 against us was a rare innings, judging from certainty, range and power of stroke.". Dionizio D,SouzaA big and powerful hitter at cricket. Had good wrists and good swing, and was a good asset to the Goan side. Charlie DSouzaA brilliant young cricketer. Captained Uganda Goans in the Pentangular Tournaments. On the Inauguration of inter-territorial Test cricket in 1951, between Uganda, Kenya and Tanganyika( Tanzania) Charlie scored two centuries against Kenya and repeated the performance against Tanzania in the following year. He was also medium fast swing bowler. Lawrence D,SouzaA fine cricketer, a dependable opening batsman and accurate spin bowler,. He was also an out standing all rounder. Americo Coelhoa fast bowler and excellent fielder.. Henry DSouza FigueiredoA promising young batsman, had played good cricket and captained many teams in Uganda. On my transfer from Kampala I lost sight of his progress. By Mr. Eutropio Pinto. Compiled by Fr. Nascimento Mascarenhas.
