When shutting down my computer last night I forgot to close the CD door.
The computer shutdown but left the door open. When I tried to reboot
it wouldn't start up. By pushing the door I managed to get the door
closed.

What a sly way to give yourself a new computer for Christmas!
As far as getting the data off the old HDD, there are a couple of
options:
1) Borrow my external HDD = USB dongle
2) Bring in the HDD to CLUG on the 6th and copy everything to CD/DVD
(how much data is there?)
3)
I'll bring my computer. That way anyone so inclined can take a look at it.
Perhaps there'll be some new insights as to what's wrong with it;
I have blank DVDs. I can't bring a monitor though because I'll be taking
the C-train and my hands will be full.

When I insert my flash drive mounts automatically. It used to mount
under directory /media/3012-E8F4, the name chosen by the manufacturer.
But since I downloaded a directory of data onto the flash drive from someone
else's computer, the drive mounts under directory /media/e `fontenc'.

I don't know how many care but Lyx 2.0 was released tomorrow (May 8th)
(It was released from Europe). There are lots of changes since 1.6 was
released over two years ago. Lyx is great for writing scientific papers since
Lyx generates Latex files but it is also useful for most other
writing. I
John's idea of using a backspace was a a good idea and I should have

I first ran the simulator which indicated that burning
was OK but finalizing failed (what is finalizing anyway?).
I was running Ubuntu 10.10 at the time so I upgraded to
Ubuntu 11.04 and tried again with a different DVD.

I worked the recent Alberta enumeration.
For the enumeration Elections Alberta promised
the enumerators and data entry operators that they
would be paid apprx $20/hr. But of course, because
Elections Alberta grossly underestimated the amount of
work involved (intentionally or otherwise) I only

I estimate 5000-6000 enumerators/data entry operators

There is a toolbar in Firefox with buttons for google maps, google news,
google search etc.
I am not sure but it may only display when reading gmail.
Anyway, for me for some reason this toolbar has stopped displaying. I
looked for reasons
as to why it might be hidden and tried a reset of Firefox,
I would have liked to be there and would have bought a membership so I could

My hard drive is getting quite loud so I am planning to replace it.
