You can save the old one and have it pressure tested to confirm diagnosis, if
good you can have it boiled out for next time. Any radiator shop should do.

Here is an update on my water\oil issue. As the oil cooler is raw water cooled,
and the oil lines are attached via banjo fittings. Testing was next to
impossible here. I opted to replace the cooler. I'm not 100% sure it was the
cooler, and not severe condensation, but I feel good about the repair.
I will say it took less time to reassemble than it did to tear it apart. I
reassembled in the morning, as per the coarse of things. It was hot and muggy
in the morning, 15 minutes after I finished the temp dropped 10 degrees and a
light breeze along with cloud cover came along. Go figure. Lol.

I think I've stated before that my all-time favorite tool out of all my battery
tools and corded tools is a small corded wet/vac. It has a small, all plastic
tank and large and strong motor. I took off the castors and glued a piece of
carpet to the bottom, so it dosn't scratch the varnished sole, or the paint on
deck. I think it has a five gallon tank and a 5hp motor and an 18 ft long 1
1/2" hose, so it can really reach everywhere in the boat. I keep it in a dock
box and use it all the time and lend it out to others. I'd love to have it
mounted aboard, but my boat is just too small.

I recommend you size your inverter at 2x anticipated load. Also, if you use a

a 100 ah limiter, do max output of inverter 100x 12 = 1,200 watts.

Subject: Stus-List Re: Sizing an inverter

Inverters are sized to the expected loads.

Batteries are sized to how long you want to run those loads.

Example: My wife’s hair dryer on 500 watts is drawing about 50 amps. If she ran
it for an hour that would be 50 amp/hours, which would be all you can use out
of a 100AH battery. Thanks to Peukert’s equation, with lead acid batteries it
is a little worse than that. (heavy loads draw them down faster than the
formula, light loads a little less than the formula)

As for the switches, I don’t know how your boat is wired. My inverter runs off
the house bank with its own switch.

BTW – your math is a bit off. A 100 amp hour battery can probably supply around
500 amps or more, which is 6,000 watts. It can’t do it for very long though,
but long enough to start an engine. Amps, amp-hours, watt-hours, and so on can
get confusing.

I’ll post how to figure this out when I get a chance.

OK, an DC/AC Pure Sine Wave inverter looks attractive

I've heard some boats have 1000 watt, some 2000watt and some 3000 or more.

What size inverter is right for a boat equipped with two 100Ah AGM batteries?

One battery provides 12v x 100ah: 1200watts. My system can provide 2400 watts
but I usually reserve one battery to restart the engine and run on the other
battery. Does the inverter get fed from a bus common to both batteries, or to
the selector switch marked, "Off, 1, both, 2"?

For me, coffee is a personal taste you get used to.
The french press flavor, is great, but too much to clean up for me. (I'll have
to check the newer model press suggested by Josh.) I keep a $12) 12 cup
electric Mr Coffee on the boat for when we have shorepower. Bought during my
refit while on the hard, I've had it for four years now. For off grid, we boil
water on the propane stove and use instant coffee. There are some pretty good
instant coffee's available now, but you have to try a few to find one you like.
We prefer the packets from Nescafe. There are several blends. It's great to
boil water in the kettle and then have choices of coffee, tea, or hot chocolate.

I'm considering a stainless coffee perculator I can sit on the stovetop and
brew 8 or 9 cups. That would make four mugs of coffee and could be reheated in
the same container. I'd also like to have is a good carafe to keep it hot
longer while underway.

I appreciate the feedback.

We still enjoy TV at the dock and it's built in DVD player allows us to borrow
movies from the library or rewatch old favorites like Hornblower, Wackiest Ship
in the Army, Houseboat, Two For the Road, Wind, etc.

The attraction of the Jackery is portability and it plugs right into my shore
power inlet so all the 120v outlets can be powered. It's easily removed from
the boat and could backup my house during hurricane season, or taken camping.

If you price out a 2000 watt invertor and batteries for it and 400 watt solar
panels and a battery monitoring system, I would think it would get more
expensive and more labor intensive, wiring all that together. I would prefer a
stand alone system that can be used when needed, and not something permanently
mounted. $1700 may seem like a lot of money, but the system would allow me to
run a microwave or a hair dryer and provides another way to charge batteries
when on the hook. It would be removed from the boat for racing, removing all
that weight.

I haven't bought one yet. I'm still considering options.

  1. Powering it. Inverters are not all that expensive.
  2. Storing power – I would add batteries for the whole boat instead of just

I like the "2000 plus" cause it has a 30amp socket that accepts my shorepower
cord and comes with two 200Watt folding solar panels. $1800 but cheaper and
less labor than installing a Lithium battery system with solar panels.

Anybody have experience with these devices?

Exploring Korbey's suggestion:
a Blue Sea 3 way 120v 30amp switch = $160.
A 2000 watt inverter costs $200,
two 200watt solar panels cost $400
Mounting panels cost
Wiring to go between these cost $100
Battleborn Lithium battery cost $925

Total cost $1785

Looking at Richard's photos from moving his 34cb to the shop got me
thinking.

Firefly is a C 29 Mk1 with extended keel which is lake locked 3 hrs away. We
have been considering moving her closer to home, back to the Columbia River. As
previously mentioned she is due for hull paint (or wrap) as well as bottom
inspection, paint etc.

So the choices become hire a boat mover, or obtain a suitable trailer (rental
or buy). I have plenty of trailer-tow experience just not with a 29ft fixed
keel sailboat.

The question to the group is: Any insights, experience or thoughts on 29
trailering?

All comments, stories and discussion welcome!

Richard,

I am looking at a potential next boat which might need some topside painting,
and a very knowledgeable friend said while Awlgrip is the hardest surface, the
pigment is not consistent through the paint thickness which makes any scratches
more apparent. Awlcraft, while a little softer surface, is easier to apply
initially and repair in the future.

FWIW - He had his last 2 boats painted with Alexseal and they looked great
after 8 years. Easy to apply and can be repaired.

I suspect most of us with IOR era boats have had similar experiences.

The transom on my 38 is a bit over 5 feet wide. I needed to adjust the steering
cables on the quadrant, so I removed the one scupper hose in the way and went
down in the lazarette with my trusty wrenches and schrunched head first, on my
back towards the steering gear. I couldn't quite put a wrench on both ends of
the steering cable, so I put my foot on a convenient surface in the lazarette
and pushed myself the last few inches until I could reach just fine. Success!
The wheel centered and the cables snug.

Then the problem materialized.

I couldn't back out. My hands were trapped above my head by the underside of
the cockpit sole and the steering guide pulleys with nothing to push against.
Nothing I could reach with my foot to pull against. And no one on the dock to
hear me shout "Anyone there!?"

About the time I had decided that they would discover my withered body when
the smell became offensive to someone on an adjacent boat at the club, I decide
to make another try at getting out. I finally managed to raise my back and
wiggle my butt so I could "inchworm" myself down a quarter or half inch at a
time until I could hook a toe on the edge of the fuel tank and move back until
I could free my hands, reach the side of the lazarette, and pull out of the
trap.

I'm basically convinced that a new boat should come with the option of either a
midget with an engineering degree, or a very precocious 14-year old.

I can easily relate to that.

I was stuck, headfirst, in the lazarette on friend’s Hunter 34. The lazarette
was deep and there was a “point of no return”. If you passed it, there was no
way to crawl your way back, but the lazarette was too tight to fall in and
reverse. Fortunately, the owner was not that far away and eventually heard my
yelps for help.

I keep saying that we need to teach some very little kids (2-3 yo) to do
maintenance on our boats. They have the right size for that.

I still have nightmares of getting stuck back under the cockpit.

I once got stuck upside down head first, under the cutting board, under a panel

I use SeaFlo for my fresh water pump and a large diaphragm bilge pump. Both are
great and have withstood 3 years of full time cruising without a hiccup. If
you're concerned about premature failure, buy two (one for a backup), still
cheaper than mainstream brands. They are no worse than anything at the marine

When we purchased our 1956 Matthews 42 with twin 454 gas V8 engines we had
difficulty obtaining insurance at any cost. After a haul-out survey, drawn
fasteners, and certifying the survey findings we got to my qualifications to
own and operate the vessel.

The insurance company that was most promising asked about my ownership and
experience operating/navigating similar size vessels. They also asked about
what training/education related to boat operation I had competed.

Fortunately, I had all those bases covered and we were able to bind coverage.
The cost is 4X what we pay for Calypso. We were expecting 3X, hoping for 2X.

I expect newbies, possibly during COVID buying more boat than they could handle
along with high payouts from storm damage is driving insurance companies out of
the market.

Hi David,

In my case, The exhaust was working fine, no leaks. But I had to remove it to
get the bell housing off to access the transmission bolts to remove the
transmission which was slipping. The transmission is being rebuilt by a pro.
The exhaust riser had some questionable looking fittings that were original and
I wanted to replace what I could while waiting for the transmission. The water
injector elbow was a street elbow and missing some meat where the hose gets
clamped on. It should be a barb fitting and it must have been installed before
the flange was screwed on, so the flange needed to be removed to remove the
injector elbow.

I put it in a vice and soaked it in PB Blaster for a week, spraying the joints
every day, and then tried a pipe wrench on the flange. It turned easily but
the 1 1/4" nipple sheared right off leaving some portion of threads inside the
flange neck. We had to cut the part of the nipple in the riser using a sawzall
and chisel it in on itself making a spiral we turned using a couple large
pliers. We were going to do the same for the barb fitting but instead tried to
heat the casting and use a pipe wrench to turn it. Since we had three guys,
one held the torch while I had the pipe wrench, and the third guy tapped the
casting with a ballpeen hammer. Before the barb fitting turned, the casting
cracked where it was thinnest. Oh shit. The most experienced guy tried to
braze the crack but it just opened up more and more.

Where the casting cracked was right below the hex molded into it. We discussed
our problem and re-evaluated what we did and methods used and all agreed we did
things right. The casting was paper thin at the crack and it was a blessing to
find this now instead of it eroding through and failing at sea. Or you could
say I should have left it alone and not messed with it. I could get a pipe
nipple welded on the flange and I could fix the crack in the riser using an
epoxy, but I chose to order new parts. My Barr riser was aluminum and I found
it available online. The iron version is cheaper but out of stock. A new
flange costs about the same as what a welder would charge to add a nipple to
the old one. I looked at SS models but they look like they may not fit in my
engine box, so I will replace with the same parts and the new exhaust should
last longer than the engine.

I've determined the main on my 27 MkIII is actually sized for a MkII. So,
P=29ft vs 31ft and E=9.5ft vs 10ft ... which explains why I could never fully
hoist to the upper black mark. No idea how old the main is. It has a couple
patches. It had some stitching redone about 10 years ago and converted to loose
foot at the same time. I recall the loft mamager inspecting it and making
several comments at the time, for example on batten pockets, along the lines of
"we haven't done things like that for decades" ... so that gives some
perspective on age, perhaps.

Now I've come across a very decent main for $400 CAD, but it's for a Newport
28. The Newport has a P=32.5ft and E=10.3ft. But I think this particular one
measures a P around 32ft. Regardless, a bit bigger than ideal. So I have it
from the seller to test fit. I'll see if I can get it into one of the local
lofts to be checked out.

Thoughts? Drop the boom a bit? Get it recut?

Here's a question for the mechanics in the group.

I am replacing the engine's exhaust riser or mixing elbow and associated

can handle the heat and make a good seal and hopefully make it easier to take

I've been adised to use Never-Sieze on the bolts holding the flange and want to
use Megaloc by Hercules on the pipe threads, but don't see any temperature
stats on the can.

Any suggestions?

FWIW, I worked as an HVAC mechanic and know there are teflon tapes rated
specifically for Gas. But the only time I used teflon tape is when threads
were damaged and I followed up with Megaloc on top of it. I never like using
tape as threads of tape can wind up clogging valves downstream. I never liked
using teflon as tape or paste as I found leaks later.

Megaloc works on everything including fuel, water, gas, gasoline, oxygen,
acids, etc. My company wound up specifying it for all situations and it paid
off in the long run. It's good stuff.

Jon and others,

Until two years ago, my boat also used to stall in idle when approaching docks.
Then, midway across Lake Ontario from Cape Vincent to Sodus on a calm day the
fresh water pump/antifreeze circulator seized up. There was melting belt rubber
with smoke as the bearings stopped turning. Five days and $56 later I had a new
antifreeze circulator in place and we haven’t stalled out since. The friction
in the bearings were enough to strain the engine into a stall.

Transitory engine issues can create drama quickly. Back in 1992 we had just
taken possession of a 1981 C 36 and departed Seattle's Lake Union heading out
to our saltwater moorage at Shilshole Bay Marina. This trip takes us west
through the Lake Washington Ship Canal, under the Fremont and Ballard Bridges
(needed to open them), and through the Ballard locks. The Ship Canal is narrow
enough that it is rare to sail through it. It was also calm that day. The
engine ran just fine through the transit to and into the locks (approx. first
hour of ownership). It is common to shut down the engine while locking through
as it can take enough time to expose a few people to the exhaust fumes.

So, the lock gates open, the C 36's Yanmar 3-cylinder diesel fires up and
aided by the outgoing current we departed the lock. Now it worth noting there
is an opening single leafed Bascule train bridge with a clearance of +-48' at
that moment's tide height a short distance west of the lock. Our 36's air draft
was a little over 50'.
Given how the gods watching over errant sailors enjoy a good laugh from time to
time the engine chooses that moment to shut down. It shut down in that way that
indicates a restart is unlikely. The train bridge is also down. The current
coming out of the locks is relentlessly pushing us towards the closed bridge. I
am suddenly very concerned for the top few feet of the mast.

I immediately sounded the signal asking for an opening. I asked the boat's new
co-owner to make ready to anchor. I hit the starter to see if the engine would
restart. It sputtered and died again. I sounded for an opening again. Nothing
promising was happening up on the bow in way of an anchor being deployed. I
attempted another restart this time with the reduction gear in reverse to make
use of any rotation of the prop. I get maybe 15 to 20 seconds of run time
which slowed our progress slightly. The bridge operator made the horn signal
indicating he was able to open the bridge, no trains were in route. I headed
for the side of the bridge that opens first and hit the starter again hoping
for another few seconds of reverse.

Fortunately, the bridge opened just enough and our path close to the opening
end of the bridge equaled just enough clearance the mast remained intact, and
we avoided an embarrassing episode where we would have needed to "strike the
burgee", obscure the boat's name, and wear bags over our heads to avoid being
identified.

The cause of all this entertainment was debris in the fuel tank blocking the
fuel pick-up. We hired a fuel tank cleaner/polisher who cut a inspection port
removed the debris, cleaned the tank, polished the fuel and voila, no more fuel
pick up issues.

Fast forward to 1999 and I am motoring our recently acquired C 43 along the
same route. When the truck from Chicago arrived, we had her unloaded at a Lake
Union boat yard. After 3 months of repair and upgrade work the boat was ready
to leave but the mast was still in the paint shed so we motored off without a
mast. Didn't need to open any bridges and was relaxed about restarting in the
locks and heading west. (The anchoring gear was ready to go this time.) When
we got to our Shilshole Bay Marina slip I contacted the fuel cleaning guy and
had the tank thoroughly cleaned and the fuel polished to be ready for my next
trip with the mast up and its 70' air draft.

David,

My thinking is it’s not water, as once it stopped, it probably wouldn’t start
again until it was cleaned out. Nevertheless, check the filter and bleed the
injectors if needed.

It could be air, so try your bleed points and get the bubbles out.

As someone mentioned, there could be some crud in the line somewhere that
eventually blocks the fuel and then backs off so you can start again.

My money is on crud in the lines somewhere. Maybe your primary filter needs
replacement.

All the best,

Edd

Anybody ever rebuild a Hurth transmission? I believe the clutch discs on mine
have worn to the point they need to be replaced. There are a few YouTube
videos online that show the process. Very challenging and parts alone are
$537. I think I can remove the unit from the engine and take it to a machine
shop with a press, and have them rebuild it using my parts.

In spite of what they say the new masthead unit is not compatible with the i60
instruments. The direction it's fine, but the wind speed adjustment available
is not sufficient to compensate To get the old head to like the new data
protocols. I would think it is the same, or worse, for the i50 series.

I ended up getting a new head and having to also install the various "talk"
conversions.

I brought Touche' back from Pensacola to its home slip on Lake Pontchartrain
this week. Overall a nice sail with fair winds and weather.

Had one glitch. Here's an excerpt from the trip report I sent some of my
sailing buddies.

Thursday we were motor sailing past Petit Bois Island, Mississippi. We'd just
crossed the Pascagoula Ship Channel. Touche's engine quit. Just quit. No
slowing down or whatever. Just died. WTF? The engine is a Universal 25XPB
with about 2000 hours on it.

First thing I did was open the cockpit locker and look at the vacuum gauge on
the Racor 500MA fuel filter. It was still in the yellow where it normally
runs. I pulled the top and checked the filter element anyway. I looked fairly
clean. Next I investigated if the filter might have an air leak and the level
had dropped below the discharge. The filter was only about half full. I keep
a small jug of diesel for topping off the filter if need be. I topped it off
and put the filter element back in. I inspected the filter lid o-ring and
gasket. The gasket is square and can get twisted. Both looked normal.
Buttoned up the filter and tried to start the engine. It would barely idle and
died.

The engine has an electric fuel pump. Okay, next we checked the pump. I put
my finger on the pump. My buddy turned on the ignition and pressed the preheat
button. Normally an electric fuel pump goes "click, click, click". Only
one click. Aha! Dead fuel pump.

The wind was good and we were still carrying 5 knots or so. Fortunately, I had
a spare fuel pump on board. I spent about 1.5-2 hours changing it. Before I
installed it, I checked it for operation by powering it up. Yep. It went
"click, click, click".

Got the new pump installed and we're ready to fire it up. My buddy turns on
the ignition and hits the preheat button. Nothing, zip, nada. Even the
audible alarm was silent. Big WTF?? He notices that even the engine gauges
aren't moving. Hmmm. No power to the panel?? He says his Yanmar has a fuse
on the engine and he thinks Westerbeke/Universals may have a circuit breaker.
I grab the engine manual, pull up the wiring diagram. It shows a 20 amp
breaker. Who knew? But...where the heck is it? After a bit of searching, I
found it on the bracket where the fuel pump and some miscellaneous engine
electrical components are. I reach behind the panel, find the reset button and
hear a click when I press it. Okay. We try the engine again and it fires
right up. Yay! Good to go.

That lasts about a minute. It immediately dies again. Crap! I start the
investigation again. Open the cockpit locker to look at the vacuum gauge. Oh,
what a dumbass! I'd shut off the fuel valve to change the pump. I opened the
valve. The engine fired up and away we went.

All told, we only lost about an hour on our arrival time and avoided a large
tow bill.

A bit of internet research later revealed that the $256 Westerbeke 39275 fuel
pump is really a Facet 40185N. I found one on eBay for $76. Same pump.

This mimics the tachometer/hourmeter replacement from a couple weeks ago. The
Westerbeke part was $350. I found the identical part made by Datcon from a hot
rod shop for $150. When I looked at the old one, it had the Datcon name and
part number on it.

True, but they are longer end-to-end and do not fit where the 4D goes. I have
glassed in supports sized to the 4D. I would definitely have done that and
saved my back if they fit.

Also three group 24s fit into an 8D box if you have one.

I have been trying to put off buying new batteries until I can rewire for
Lithium, but that was not to be. My last sail saw the house battery drop to
about 12.4 volts an hour off shore power and the engine battery struggles with
a cold engine.

To my surprise, the local West Marine in Annapolis started carrying Odyssey
batteries. I got a 4D Odyssey that uses their pure lead thin plate technology.
This is basically an AGM, but is supposed to have a longer lifespan and charge
faster than the conventional version. The West Marine branded batteries are
really East-Penn Deka batteries. The Deka AGMs are only “OK”, not great. I was
really happy to see WM branching out a bit. For the start battery I decided to
risk a battery made out of Chinenesium, if it dies I am not out a lot of money
nor is it hard to change out.

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07K6Z3VZ2?psc=1=ppx_yo2ov_dt_b_product_details

There are a lot of U1 size AGMs on Amazon, most of them seem to be around
150-170 CCA. This one is 320 CCA, which is plenty for me, the A4 starter draws
about 130 amps.

I am 100% sure the next house battery I buy will be lithium, getting a 120
pound battery into it’s spot was a huge PITA. Right now the tech is just not
there on the cheap end. The “drop in” batteries really are no such thing. They
might not blow up or catch on fire, but they may have a vey short lifespan
depending on exactly what they get dropped in to. Even worse is when on a dark
and stormy night the BMS decides to cut off all your power for some random
reason.

Well, gosh darn. Touche's engine hour meter died (or went to sleep). Engine
is Universal 25XPB. Boat is in yard 4 hours away so I'm just probing around
the web for options.

First, it may be repairable. Might just be a poor connection. I probably
won't tackle it until I get the boat back to its home slip in Louisiana in a
couple weeks. An hour meter isn't that critical. However, on the chance that
it isn't repairable, I have two options.

First, install a stand alone waterproof hour meter. Cost $20-40 depending on
selection and another hole in the bulkhead.

Second, replace the tachometer/hour meter. Did that once already. Here's
where it gets interesting. It's Westerbeke part 011917. Typical online price
is about $340 US.

https://westerbeke.com/Product/METER/011917?productname=METER=54202996DAF73B1CA82D59C6

So I Googled "tachometer/hour meter" and probed around. Guess what? A Datcon
71725-00 tach/hour meter for about 1/3 of Westerbeke's price. Looks identical.
Spec says data source is alternator which I believe the 25XPB is. Here's the
tach:

https://vehiclecontrols.com/shopping/shop700/products1/453057044-71725-00-datcon-tachometer-with-hourmeter-4000rpm/

Very interesting. Could this be the same tach? 3 3/8" hole. Next time I'm on
the boat, I'll verify the diameter and alternator data sensor. If I can't
repair it, I'll replace it with the Datcon. Anybody know why I shouldn't?

I dropped my rudder for repairs some 10 years ago and to my recollection, the

from underside of cockpit floor to provide space for steering quadrant and be
well above water line. Shaft continues up through cockpit floor square cast
bronze fitting held in place by 4 bolts. Fitting hole for rudder shaft is
also close tolerance so threads for donut ride on hole edges. This is the real
issue as over time the threads enlarge the fitting hole allowing the rudder
post to wobble. Hence the solution to remove the fitting and insert a new
bushing.

On a related note, the tube should have a threaded hole for a grease cup.
Ensure that is working so you can insert grease as part of normal maintenance.
I replace the cup with a hydraulic hose with fittings so I could insert grease
from the locker and not have to crawl back there

Hi All,
I'm getting ready to replace the electrical panel on our boat with a Blue Seas
8408. Has anyone done this? I would love to see some installation pictures and
see how/what others have done and used for bus bars and terminal blocks?
Any other insight is more than welcome!
If you are brave, this is a link to a few pictures I took on the weekend.

Consider an "in hull" transducer. No hole needed. Mount anyplace with solid
hull. I have 2 on my 1980 34. Work fine.

I believe mine were located slightly to starboard due to easy access, not
because there’s anything special about one side or the other.

Ditto on the Green. The further you get from centerline and keel, the more
distorted your readings are likely to be.

The depth sounder on my 42 Custom is approximately where your green marker is,

Contrary to what Bill said, mine is located just forward of the solid glass.
When I replaced my speed and depth transducers several years ago, I used the
same location. Water from the balsa core literally ran down my arm when I
removed the old transducers and pushed on the soaking wet balsa core. We dried
out the entire area and created solid epoxy “plugs” larger than the old holes
for redrilling the new transducer holes. This was not a difficult job, but
then again I have a “stick boat.”

A 1982 C 25 didn’t come with speed and depth transducers?

Hi all,
Sorry about ressurecting this topic. I only had time to go to the boat this
past weekend. Bill, the boat is a C 25

Here is an "annotated" drawing from Sailboat data that I will use for my
questions:
https://imgur.com/a/3Ar35Pb

To me, there are three options (some easier than others) to cut the hull (2
inches round) and add the transducer:

Red marker: At the moment, the original (I think?) depth sounder is located in
the red marker *inside* the hull.

Yellow marker: There is a small access port to the fibreglass on the yellow
marker that *could* fit the depth/speed transducer. It feels very high on the
hull and a bit fragile as the fitting would stick out of the access port and be
a bit exposed (second picture of the link)

Green marker: Last option, cut a square access *hatch* on the plastic liner
wall (orange mark) that separates the "inside" of the boat from the fiberglass
hull and then cut a hole on the green mark.

Any mindhive thoughts? I am very nervous about making a hole in the wrong place
:)

Thanks!

True, but it's all in concentration. Too much and yes, you will eat through
your keelbolts. Just a tiny bit, and you will kill the nasty stuff that grows
in there. I once put a chlorine pellet in one of my strainers, and it it ate
Holes through the stainless steel strainer . Having said all that, when I first
got my 39, I decided to get all of the mildew out of it and took everything out
of the boat, nice mixture of Tide, chlorine and ammonia, sprayed it all around,
power washed it, rinsed it and sucked it out. If a little bit of cleaner is
good, a lot is better right,? I'm lucky to be alive. Little did I know then
that ammonia and chlorine creates mustard gas! Live and learn!

Subject: Stus-List Problem with Bilge Pump

I've been using a Jabsco diaphragm bilge pump located in the starboard cockpit
locker/engine compartment for many years without any problems. The hose from
the pump has a vented loop and exits at the stern.

Recently, I noticed that while the pump was functioning apparently normally, no
water was coming out at the stern. I removed the exit hose from the pump while
it was operating and within a few seconds I had water pumping out of the pump.
I replaced the hose and the water continued to pump out of the stern as it
normally should.

However, when I went back to the boat a few days later, the same problem was
occurring. It looks like the pump is working normally but unless I pull the
exit hose off the pump, it continues to run with no water actually pumping. The
suction element in the bilge in clean and unobstructed

Any suggestions as to how to diagnose this would be much appreciated. I'm
wondering if I'm just not getting sufficient pressure from the pump to overcome
the vented loop, maybe due to gaskets that need to be replaced? The pump is
probably 5 or 6 years old at this point and I have never serviced it. But when
I removed the hose from the pump, it seemed to be coming out with quite a bit
of pressure.

Thanks in advance.

Glen,

There are a few, reasonably local, reps for Doyle and North Sails. I think one
is in Barrie, the other somewhere in GTA. So, if you prefer working with them
and having the measurement taken by them, just send them a request (their
websites work well).

However, be prepared that the “big guys” tend to be substantially more
expensive.

I had a very good experience with a couple sail loft where I ordered sails
online/by phone.

One is the Somerset Sails
(https://somersetsails.com/).
I ordered a full set (main and jib) in 2013. I talked at length to Martin, and
he suggested a few changes to what I originally planned. The sails worked well.
I still use the main, and just replaced the jib – the sacrificial UV cover
started to wear out and the cost of replacing that was comparable to a new sail.

The other is the Far East sails. I have just replaced the jib (see above).

Both of them offer very competitive prices. I went with Far East this time,
because Martin responded after a month’s delay (as it happened, he was away)
and by that time I decided to use Far East.

The only issue with ordering like that is that you have to make your own
measurements. This means that if you make mistakes, you are responsible. The
short advice is to measure twice and be sure that you take the correct
measurements (e.g., from-to the correct points on the boat). Don’t assume that
the “standard measurements” are correct. This is very important regarding the
jib measurements, as you need to consider the furler (how high above the deck
the tack is, and how much below the mast top the top swivel is).

As much as I would like to see the sail loft’s rep on my boat, it is hardly an
option here in Ottawa. So, the mail order is the only reasonable option.

Good luck with your search

Happy New Year!

I've been looking for insurance to cover our boat in the Caribbean and Med.

READ THE POLICY BEFORE YOU BUY!

I got what I thought was a good quote through a British broker until I read
that the value of the mast decreased by 5% per year - i.e. a 20 year old mast
was not insured.

John,

Butyl is the way to go on these. The hatch is only held in with self tapping
screws.

As Paul mentioned the seal can have issues on the very back of hatch where the
joint is.

My Atkins & Hoyle hatch in the head has developed a leak between the aluminum
frame and the deck. Have tried various sealants which all have failed mainly
because they lose adhesion to the vertical aluminum surface. Cannot figure out
how to remove the frame so I can clean it and reseal (with butyl?). There are
no visible flanges. It is a tight fit to the hole cur in the deck. Has anyone
had similar issues? Is there a flange on the frame that is sealed to the
underside of the deck? Is it just glued in with plexus or similar? All

Stus-List Re: Solar switch?

yes but. the panels never generate the rated watts in the real world. best to
monitor output in your specific locale / application. No need to make an
expensive upgrade for something that will never happen. I run 2x 100/30 amp
controllers on 2 sets of 4 x 150 watt panels in the baja. They never make more
than 10 amps.

Actually, the controller should be even bigger (400 W/12 V = 33.333 A). A 30 A
controller will be marginal, at best. If you run it like that, it may generate
excessive heat and may fail prematurely.

The voltage would depend on how the panels are connected. If all in parallel,
then the voltage should not exceed 20-22 V.

sounds OK. Note the rating on your Victron controller. A 100v/ 30amp
controller is likely needed for 4 panels. they could generate over 80 volts.
Your Victron has a switch for different battery types if you change system in
the future. Also be sure to fuse or use a breaker in the system between panels
and battery.

Hi All,

Starting to look at the project list for the spring and I have a question for
the group.

I have 4 100 watt solar panels that are connected directly to a solar generator
(Bluetti AC200P) that is wired to the AC panel. When I want to charge the house
bank I flip the switch for the House bank/start bank charger. Obviously not the
most efficient way to charge but works. I have a Victron solar charge
controller that came with the panels that I would like to use. The question is,
can I run the solar panels into a two way switch. One side going to the charge
controller and the other going to the solar generator? That way I could charge
the house bank till full then switch it over to the lithium.

Thanks everyone.

I originally installed an old Xantrex (I think 30 amp) mainly because it was

eventually failed and I replaced with a new 40 amp Xantrex in about 2014. It
crapped out a few months after the warranty period. A friend who is a marine
electronics wizard (people actually pay him to come to Florida to work on their
boats) told me that Xantrex had been bought and the quality had gone to pot.
Pro Mariner was one of his recommendations for the replacement.

BTW, I was considering getting an inverter/charger and he suggested getting two
devices instead of one. With an inverter/charger if either system fails you
tend to lose both functions. So I have more than adequate charging capacity for
the big house bank to run the boat systems, and a 1000W sine wave inverter for
AC things like charging the laptop and the various rechargeable items on the
boat.

And I prefer to hand grind fresh coffee beans ( the Japanese grinder on the
boat may have cost more than the inverter) and use a French Press for coffee.

On Persistence we simply boil the water and use a French press for coffee. The
Vigil Shorepower brand inverter that was listed as tested and working on our
pre--purchase survey in 2014 never has worked for us. I have a small sine-wave
inverter mounted under the chart table that we use for the odd 110v needs
(charging and computers).
We recently purchased a WolfPup 16PF travel trailer for something of a change.
It has no inverter and I am considering installing one. Also have a 1200w
inverter generator (also too small for Keurig). The inverter would mainly be
just to run a tv and such. Am thinking of replacing the “converter” with a
Converter/inverter (I know Renogy makes a bunch of those as does Xantrex). I
am constantly amazed at the difference in quality between a boat and a trailer.
However they are quite similar in many ways

First, I have posted here before about my somewhat negative opinion of Xantrex
II chargers. My boat repair colleague and I quit installing them after a few
failures. We switched to Blue Sea, Promariner and, for smaller installations,
Guest.

The original Xantrex chargers, while perhaps not as "smart" as the newer
chargers, are very reliable. I have a 20 year old Xantrex 20 on Touche'. Note
- it's NOT a Xantrex II. I have a spare but have never had to install it.

Second, I prefer separate chargers and inverters. If one side fails, you're in
it for big $$$. There are folks who repair them but they're not cheap.

Mike,
I haven’t found it to be a big issue, although I’m running the Keurig either at
anchor or on a mooring and not while I’m running a whole lot of other devices
such as radar/chartplotter. 12V Adler Barbour refrigerator adds somewhat to
the battery draw. The toaster oven is a different story as it is rated at
1300w. That gets used very sparingly. Two series 31 batteries (100amps each)
hooked up to 2 100W solar panels helps refresh the system rather quickly.
I also tend to turn off various circuits when not in use (gray and fresh water
pump, radar, instruments, select lighting) that seems to help keep battery
charge levels manageable.

Pete,
I have a newer Xantrex 2000W inverter/charger that I use on my Landfall 35. I
have 2 type 31 lead acid house batteries. Because I’m on a mooring and run 12v
refrigeration, I’m also using 2 100w solar panels mounted on the bimini.
But with regards to the Xantrex inverter/charger, when we cruise, my wife likes
to use her single cup Keurig coffee maker and we also have an older Black and
Decker toaster oven on board. We don’t run both at the same time, but we’ve
never seen huge draw from the batteries afterwards.
Overall, I’m pretty happy with it. We have used the charger function when the
boat is on the hard for the winter and can plug into “shore power” using 110V
adapter on the shore power cable..

One consideration. If you are producing 1000 watts and you can only put a
500 watt load into from 2 sets of solar panels batts your daily power storage
potential will be drastically impaired. To avoid lithium / agm mix issues I
run separate chargers to the lithium house bank and agm start blank.
Basically, lithium house bank gets all the solar output from 2 Victron 30 amp x
100v controllers connected to 2 sets of 4x 150 watt panels for freezer and
refer. They draw about 2,000 watts when both are starting, I have a 3,000 watt
inverter to avoid “peak” demand brown out. I turn both freezer and refer off
overnight. Freezer bottom is filled with gallon jugs of water. This mass
keeps things cold overnight. Refer freezer compartment is full of ice cube
trays. These keep refer cool overnight and refreeze during the day, even in
100* weather. My boat is on the Baja in the Sea of Cortez.

Pete - when I researched this there were very few that had a lithium-specific
output, however the AGM charge profile was recommended. (Lithium specific may
not be necessary)
This was useful because I could use my existing charger, which offers 3 charge
profiles, but cannot simultaneously charge multiple types - you can’t mix. I
was planning a lithium house bank and an agm start battery.
I had decided an inverter/charger was not in scope because I did not wish to
support higher wattage AC appliances, and also because the chargers and typical
associated infrastructure were expensive and overkill for my needs. (It
logically ends up being sized as a system, and my boat is relatively small - a
33 mark ii.)
There are those who will insist that a lithium bank warrants a high-current
charger since the lithium bank can charge at a faster rate, suggesting that you
don’t get the full benefit of the lithium bank otherwise. This is a spendy
slope and imho flawed logic - my car is capable of very high speeds, however I
don’t drive at 200km/hr to justify the purchase. I don’t need or want to.
If you need to charge extra fast at a quick marina pit-stop then that’s
different.
All This to say that as I noodled a similar upgrade I came around to sticking
with my old xantrex charger - I think it will do three banks at 20a each. The
whole system works better than I could have hoped and I never looked back.

I also have a set of Alden wrenches that I love as I don't need to know the

shear power is needed, but great in tight spaces and for many less demanding

I carry a lot of tools, but did cull some of them after the first season, as
many were duplicates which came with the boat but were of inferior quality, or
were badly corroded.

I have a large plastic toolbox with: complete screwdriver set (plus a good
multi tip driver), (3 each of standard, philips and roberston, plus roberston
#0 for small trim screws). Complete wrench set both metric and SAE in a wrap. A
wrap of custom made wrenches for the boat, made for hard to access bits on the
engine, supplied by PO. Needle nose pliers, channel locks, side cutters,
crescent wrenches. Several metal files, hacksaw with spare metal cutting
blades. Set of allen keys. Small hammer. Tap and die set with common sizes
(full set I leave at home).

In addition, I have a decent sized ratchet set in a case with 1/4, 3/8 and 1/2"
drive sockets both metric and SAE up to 22mm, along with torx and hex sockets.

I also have 3 plastic bins with electrical tools (meter, soldering iron,
crimpers, etc), connectors and wire, although could probably cull down to one,
but I always seem to have several minor electrical mods on the todo list. I
would rate this category *very* highly, as it takes very little space, but can
make the difference when something electrical goes wrong.

I also have a set of 18V tools (circular saw, recip saw, drill, hammer drill,
flashlight) that I use for projects, but keep only the drill and light aboard
when sailing. Good set of drill bits as well.

Spare parts for nearly everything: starter, alternator, engine belts, water
pump, impellers, glow plugs, engine coolant premixed, zincs for engine and
shaft, macerator pump, water pressure pump. Large assortment of SS fasteners,
shackles, etc.

We have an electric dinghy motor which charges off solar, and the battery is
capable of starting the main engine in the event of total battery failure. So
far, I've only had to use it to jump start the car after leaving it for several
months... :)

Planning to replace it with the same unit as that “should” be the easiest /
quickest. Two questions for the group:

1] The heater comes in galvanized steel and white epoxy versions. The latter
is more $ but is it worth it from a corrosion or other standpoint? It is not
visible so aesthetics are not important.

2] Found both units on Amazon for less than Defender and other distributors.
Has anyone bought parts / equipment from Amazon Marine? Usually Amazon
delivers when they indicate, but I ordered some ink for a home printer and it
still has not been delivered after 8 weeks.

The response I got from Jabsco/Xylem customer support said to do this:

The problem with your pump is the Check Valve. What you would need to do is too
clean it. Take the six screws out they would are Long then Short in size; the
pump will come part in two pieces the motor and lower housing as one piece and
the pump head; once you spread the two pieces apart the check valve will
usually fall out by itself. The check valve looks like a triangle with suction
cups in each corner on one side and the other side theirs a rubber diaphragm in
the center; that are machine press in(Take a picture of the check valve “Both
Sides”). Take the check valve and place it in a bucket of warm water wait a
couple of minutes. While the check valve is soaking; take the head where the
suction and the discharge hose hookup and rotate and look inside. You will see
a circle in the center a 1/8” edge; take a wet towel and wipe off that edge
(Front, Back and Top Edge). Take the Check Valve when it’s submerged pick it up
and slush it back and forth in the bucket of water for a couple of minutes
(While Submerged). This should clear all the particles. Place the check valve
back into the Head of the pump and put it back together. 90% of the time your
pump will be back to normal.

Seems excessive for a brand new pump but I guess I will have to try it.

Did you liberally purge it? If it has any air in it, it will continue to run.
Run several gallons through it and then check it.

Barring that, the pressure switch may need adjusting.

Had same thoughts. Grease is easy place to start and he has never greased, so
way past time. If that doesn't resolve wobble, then inspect rudder for
irregularities, cutless bearing and shaft, propeller, etc. He'll have to haul
boat for all that. Could look at shaft, coupler, and seal from inside boat.
Maybe watch from down below while someone drives at 3000 rpm?

I didn’t know the 34 came with a tiller option. My 1978 34 had a wheel, as
does every other 34 I’ve ever seen (about a half dozen or so). Interesting.

Given that the wobble corresponds to RPMs, I would not guess it’s a tiller or
rudder grease issue. I’m no expert, but it sounds more like a prop shaft strut
or cutless bearing issue. Did you by chance have a dock line sucked into your
prop before the vibration started?

Try filling the rudder shaft tube full of waterproof grease. Most recommend
"Green Grease" but I have been using "Corrosion Block Waterproof Grease" (it's
blue...). My 81 C has a grease cup, but I and others have added a grease
fitting to the cup to pump the tube full. I just did mine yesterday -- rudder
started to move a little more than usual under sail on Thursday in 2 to 3 ft
seas. Grease always puts a stop to it. Friday sail in similar conditions with
no rudder movement. I fill the tube about twice a summer. Have never
experienced the wobble while motoring, but then I don't ever go as high as 3000
rpms.

I am thinking about this too. I need to replace my Heart Inverter/Charger, so

Also, I am on 24 Volt, so if it is available would there be an advantage to

Assuming you simply want to double your storage capacity, put the batteries
side by side, wire positive to positive and
negative to negative. You now have 12 volts with 2ce the ampacity. Others may
offer some advice on charging...but
I think you should be reasonably ok, except it will take a bunch longer to
charge as you have 2ce the capacity that you
need to fill.

Learned the hard way how to test vented loops.

I was changing engine hoses and came upon an original, 33 year old, bronze,
vented loop for the engine cooling water. It's located between the heat
exchanger and the injection elbow of the exhaust riser. It's purpose is to
break a siphon and prevent water flooding the engine and the boat when the
engine is off. Mine was filled with scale and no longer operational.

The following comes from info included with a new Forespar vented loop. To
test a vented loop, you blow air through the vent from outside into the tubing,
through the "duck bill" rubber thing, and that's it. If air won't penetrate,
it's clogged and should be cleaned. If the thing leaks, it probably needs
cleaning or a new rubber duck bill.

I replaced the Forespar rubber duckbill, $15, on my bilge pump hose and I
replaced the entire loop fitting $44 on the engine hose using a Forespar 5/8"
vented loop. Now both of my vented loops use the same duckbill vent and have
the same size retaining nut so a simple clear two foot length of 3/4" hose can
be pushed over the fitting to facilitate testing either vented loop.

I have to add that I never had a problem in twenty years of ownership and
ingnored these items until I started replacing hoses. I'd be glad to hear
anyone else's ideas on this.

Yes, getting black smoke especially just after starting the engine and reviving

On 2022-06-26 11:50 p.m., Josh wrote:
You should also try to rev the engine with it out of gear. If it has the same
problem of reaching full RPM then fuel and air delivery are nearly to only
possible culprits.

A bad or weak governor spring would be indicated by an engine that has a
tendency to over speed or hunt. Pulling the throttle faster applies pressure
to open the fuel rack and provide more fuel. More fuel create more RPM and the
governor the creates a feedback force that resists the fuel rack. The governor
tries to slow the engine whereas the throttle tries to speed it up. Without
the governor the engine will tend to race, have high RPM, limited throttle
control, and is lively to overspreed.

When you get to 2100 RPM do you get heave black smoke? If you do the engine is
getting plenty of fuel but not enough air. Have you checked or simply removed
the air cleaner? When was the last time the backlash was checked on the
lifters. I can walk you through it if you don't know.

If you're not getting black smoke, are you getting any change in smoke?

Are you getting a correlating loss of power or stumbling? Or is it just not
going faster? Was it not able to push the boat at normal full speed. Are you
confident in the accuracy of the RPM gage. You can get a laser tach from
Amazon for less than $20 to confirm the RPM.

As the high pressure fuel pump and fuel injectors age they have springs that
get weak. Weak pump springs will allow the tappets to "float" and not achieve
a full intake stroke of fuelcausing a low fuel condition resulting in lower
RPM. If the injectors are dirty or have weak springs they won't achieve full
fuel pressure before injection and may even leak a small amount into the
cylinder before TDC. This is probably good more likely to cause detonation
(ping or knock), not exacly low RPM but none the less is sub optimum operation.

Have you checked the oil for fuel dilution? The fuel lift pump is driven off a
cam and if the diaphragm cracks or tears it will leak fuel into the crank case.
This may also let crankcase pressure into the high pressure fuel
pump...reducing fuel delivery and RPM. Pull the dip stick, drop some oil on a
paper towel. Smell it for diesel smell. Wait and observe for a halo.
Especially if you have red diesel the halo is seen as the clearish red halo
around the black oil spot.

If all of that checks. Then you need to get a little more invasive. A
compression check is in order. I can walk you through it and provide
parts(tools). It is definitely doable as DIY but you got some investigation to
do first. Let me know. Reach out with a PM and we can talk.

I think that Kuuma are the closest as a direct replacement, but they don’t last
too long. Depending on how you use your boat, you may want to consider a water
heater with a stainless tank. I installed an ISO-Temp heater (they are now part
of the Webasto group). They come with the temperature regulating valve and they
are supposed to be quite reliable. But the cost is usually a bit higher.

My batteries are pretty well shot, so this is all good info for me as well. I
always liked gels myself, but they are getting pretty hard to find now.

I have been getting pretty tempted to go for a 300ah lithium, it will fit right
in and give me a TON more amp-hours. If I go that way I am going to swap the
alternator cable to the start battery and use a DC-DC charger for the house
bank. One perhaps not appreciated feature of lithium batteries is that they are
“stiff”, you maintain around 12.8 volts most of the way to being dead.
Wednesday morning I went to check into the Waterway Net and the SSB wasn’t real
happy to be seeing 12.4 volts, this would not be an issue with a lithium bank
unless it was down to its very last bit of juice.

There is a lot of reason to be concerned about off brands. Pretty much all
cycling batteries of the same size will be about the same AH rating. There is
no magic in lead batteries, the AH per pound is pretty consistent. What
matters *hugely* is the number of cycles that they can endure before being
trashed. The various cheap Chinese imports are highly variable to say the
least, their reviews are all over the place. Lifeline is usually considered the
best AGM maker.

FYI – Deka makes all the West Marine AGMs, you might call around your local

Still have original oiled teak interior. Every spring wipe stairs and entire
interior with lemon oil furniture polish. Let sink in. Wipe dry with clean
soft cloth. Does wonders to clean the teak and smells great. Prevents mold
and removes any that may have formed. Usually do it on a warmish sunny day in

There should be two propane switches - one on the electrical panel (a circuit
breaker) and one near the stove. Flip on the circuit breaker and have someone
listen to the solenoid while you flip the switch near the stove. If the
solenoid is working, make sure you have enough gas in the cylinder. Is there a
pressure gauge? How much pressure is there? Beginning of the season, I always
top off the propane. Try that. Next turn on the gas at the stove, and listen
for gas flowing. Finally, try lighting the stove using a match instead of using
the starter swtitch at the stove. Remember, if the stove hasn't been used in a
long time, it might take a while for gas to run from the cylinder to the stove.

I obtained an old two-stroke Suzuki Sail-8 for my first outboard for my
24. It has a few issues, one being is flings small amounts of oil at the
transom, so now I have some minor staining. It's less of a spot, and
more of a discolored patch where the oil has absorbed.

I am looking for any kind of coating that I can temporarily use for the
season to minimize the damage until I have the opportunity to haul-out
this coming winter. Or if there is something that I can wipe the area
down with after each outing that won't damage the gelcoat (such as it
is). Maybe something as simple as Dawn & a scrub brush?

I'd rather do a little preventive now, than have a major cleanup issue
in nine months.

Thanks in advance.

Subject: Stus-List Storm damaged marina? Are you liable?

I may have posted this before but a new development has occurred.

I had Touche' in a marina in Pensacola during Hurricane Sally in September
2020. The boat was in a slip on a floating pier well up Bayou Chico.
Similarly constructed piers are advertised as being safe for Category 3 storms.
Although it was properly secured, Touche' sustained moderate damage during the
storm.

Subsequent to the storm, I, and several other owners of boats moored on this
pier, received letters from the marina's legal counsel informing us that OUR
boats had damaged THEIR pier and that we were liable for damages in excess of
$15,000. Another marina in the Pensacola area which was destroyed has also
sent letters advising liability to their tenant boatowners. The new
development: another owner informed me that he had gotten a letter last week
raising the liability to $57,000. I have not received a similar letter.

Based on my personal post-storm inspection of the pier, here's what I believe
occurred. The marina allowed a LARGE power catamaran to be moored on my pier.
During the storm, this vessel apparently broke loose. I observed the cleats to
which I believe the vessel's stern lines were attached were missing, having
been ripped from the dock. When it broke loose it apparently pulled the main
portion of my pier and caused extensive structural damage to the pier. Namely,
all the attached finger piers became tilted and/or broke loose from the main
pier. Several boats which were moored in the slips were damaged as a result.
It is my belief that had the catamaran not broken loose, Touche' would have
weathered the strorm unscathed.

Although this legal action may be a standard procedure in order for the marinas
to establish contributory/shared liabilities for insurance purposes, it can be
stressful for boat owners. My marina required me to list them as co-insured so
this issue is basically between the marina and my insurance provider now. If I
receive another letter, I'll just forward it to my insurance provider like I
did with the first one. My insurance provider basically told them to pound
sand.

Just advising the list. You might want to contact your insurance provider.

Just thought I should update this list as ti my current "residence". Rebecca
Leah and I are currently sailing in the Sea of Cortez. I lest home in late
August and have not looked back. Not sure what summer time will bring. Whether
it is another boat back in the PNW, or an air-conditioned plot of land here in
México.
