A while ago I've reviewed a little bit which kind of contributions
distros are looking for, from people who are willing to get involved
with the distro (see #608400 for a corresponding goal).

Most distros are looking for bug triager and providing specific
documentation to train contributors in that direction. Historically in
Debian we haven't looked for that, beside the very much understandable
periodic cries for help from maintainers of popular package suites
 (GNOME, KDE, etc.).

Maybe its time to generalize that? For instance, it seems to me that
most of the above documentation by the KDE team is general and can be
used to document a general bug triaging task on our how to
contribute pages? Looking on wiki.d.o and www.d.o we don't seem to have
 much (any?) of it.

If it's worth anything, that same document + the help from the Qt/KDE
team helped me a lot to understand the workflow for bug triaging.
Understanding the technical part was not difficult, but the workflow
tends to be the the most obscure part.

+1 for a general doc for that.

Hi Bastien!

As you may know, Qt3 has been dead upstream for more than four years, and thus
without any kind of maintenance.

Our team's interests in Qt 3 was due to KDE 3, which will be removed now. So,
there is no further interest on Qt 3 and people in this team do not want to
be upstream of it or do not have the time to do so.

Our original idea was to remove Qt 3 from Debian. This will be for us the best
decision.
Of course, we can simply orphan Qt 3, and hope somebody will step up to
maintain it; we are unconvinced this is a responsible step for us to take as
it would place the maintenance burden of a large package onto the QA team.

Kinds regards,

Lisandro, in name of the Qt/KDE team

This has been implemented by other FOSS projects. A notable example is
Ubuntu who have a split between ubuntu-devel (project members only +
whitelisting) and ubuntu-devel-discuss (free for all). I've never asked,
but I have always suspected that they've done so in an attempt to
improve over the experience of debian-devel participants.

If you happen to ask, it would also be nice to know how it worked for them.

The obvious drawback of this solution is that non-contributors will
need someone to vouch for them to be whitelisted.

Well, I think if someone contributes something in the -discuss list with good

Indeed, I have seen that pattern before, although I think it was because
people are used to get CDs, not DVDs (ie, just a matter of habit).

Let's keep providing CDs as install medium, because it is still relevant
for some (and, I vaguely feel, not only exotically few) real use cases

Yes. And having installation media that needs two or more CDs for Standard

Those will do such installs with lend over, or copied, DVDs and,

caused by dropping 650MB CD images.

That's very probably a very tiny fraction of our users and, here, we
 probably can't be universal.

For whatI've seen, people who can get a CD image can also get a DVD image for
installations without network. And even here in argentina you can't buy a CD-

So, I'd vote for dropping these 650MB images. By keeping them, we hurt
ourselves much more than we're doing any good.

My vote goes there too.

As Joss says, 1GB images seem to be the best choice (unless there
would be great benefit in jumping to 2GB images immediately).

Well, 2GB flash drives seems to be the most common minimum size for what I

It's a reasonable idea for the current implementation, but I'd rather not
use that either because the protocol was designed to not require Kerberos.
It currently is only implemented using a remctl protocol, but you could
easily use REST or SOAP to communicate with the backend and 90% of the

hope to do that sort of implementation, or one that uses ssh public keys

Theoretically, it is much better to export only those symbols you (as the
upstream) actually intend to. Benefits vary from shortening the exports
table to clearly defining the ABI. But if you do that incorrectly,
problems may arise, so it may be better to not do that, especially if you
 are not the upstream.

On the other side, in the pkg-kde team we do use fvisibility=hidden.
Yes, upstream may have an error. But normally in those cases means missing
symbols and stuff that depend on your lib will FTBFS, so it's quite easy to
check.

Adding a symbol later is much easier than removing one (which normally means a
soname change).

P.S.: I am not *very* knowledgeable about this, so if anyone feels that I0m

On accepting pre-generated doc from upstream

2013-06-06 Thread Lisandro Damián Nicanor Pérez Meyer
Hi everyone. First of all, I'm cross-posting this between legal and devel
because I really don't know to which of them belongs (or maybe it does in
both).

The issue is this: Qt 5 has grown so large (850+MB unpacked in the single-
source tarball, will continue growing) that upstream also provides it as
submodules. 15 of them in 5.0.2.

Of course, in terms of maintainance, we have opted for the submodules choice.

Building the full doc could be done in two ways:

- Using the full source tarball. Saddly this means having to compile most of
it in order to get the tools for building the doc, or hacking far too much the
build system to do something else.

- Build each submodule's doc.

While the second option seems the clear winner, there is a gotcha: you need
packages 1 and 2 built and in the archive to build the documentation.
Including their documentation. Packages 3 to 15 should not present further
problems.

So this can be solved by packaging 1 and 2 without docs and pushing them to
the archive. Then, once 1 and 2 have been built on *every* arch, repackage 1
and 2 with the documentation and upload them.

This means that we need to bootstrap the packages. And we may need to do it
for every major release (5.1, 5.2,...), although it's not confirmed.

As a possible workaround, upstream has suggested to provide the documentation
already generated (could be for the submodules and/or the full doc, this has
not been discussed yet). My first reaction has been to think that this will
not be allowed in Debian, but giving it some more thought,:

- We do have the source code for generating it (preferred form of
modification).

- We can build it, but it requires lot of work... and avoid FTBFSs while
bootstrapping ;)

So, could we accept pre-generated documentation in this case?

Kinds regards, and thanks in advance for your time, Lisandro.

As a follow-up, in the specific of Qt5, I'm doing the following:

- I build arch: all packages from qtbase and qttools and push them to a
private repo.
- I re build qtbase and qttools, this time with arch: all packages too,
sourcing the private repo (maybe I can just go for arch: all). I push them to
the private repo.
- I build every other Qt package with their docs. But as docs are linked
between them, I push them to the private repo and...
- I finally build all the packages again, upload.

I have not yet fully implemented the two last steps, but according to my tests
it will work :)

This should be really necessary on every minor (not patch) upstream release.

DEP5 Upstream-Contact hint is defined as the preferred form of contact

So if adopted and up-to-date, it will be the correct (and will also be

I don't mind if that field is available as long as it's optional, filled only

more burden on what we already have.

And DEP5 is fine as long as you don't hit a source wich makes it grow above

This usually means you're doing it wrong. Comprehensive copyright-format
1.0 files for some of my packages with over 20 different licenses,
including all of the build machinery (which you don't actually have to
document), and dozens of separate copyright holders are only 300 lines.
Obviously they'll grow considerably if you have licenses that aren't in
common-licenses but are quite long, but that's unavoidable regardless of
 the format.

I agree. And yes, Maybe I could have make it less verbose by compressing the
set of files thathave stuff in common.

But that would have taken me at least one more day of work. Thanks, but no

It is, that's what I'm currentyly doing. But in this way the resulting doc

It woiuld need to B-D on all the previous doc and build the doc twice to do

Recent versions of uscan can automatically repack upstream tarballs to
remove files, just include a Files-Excluded line in debian/copyright.

ah, that’s news to me and has been on my secret wish list for long (and
wasn’t the case when I last looked)! That solves half of my issues with
 this.

It’s not well documented in man uscan, which only tells me how to
 disable that feature.

Do you (or anyone) know if it repacks the file consistently? I.e. will
two developers, who both use uscan to get the original tarball for the
same version and with the same File-Excluded get identical results?

IIRC, it uses an invocation of find to do the job, so I guess the answer is
yes.

Hi Dirk, Charles and everybody!

I was going to share my current and very positive experience with Qt5
providing a virtual package as Charles suggest, but looking further in the bug
log I see that at least Scott and Don have already done so with other
examples.

So just allow me Dirk to tell you that, in my experience, it's just a very
nice tool to keep things coherent, even if you don't need to change it much.

Maintainers should not have to go grubbing around in the delayed queue to

The first thing you can do is to stop assuming bad faith, instead of
assuming a mistake. I wouldn't have sent an email to the bug report and
then uploading the package by intent. So sorry about the unplanned
 immediate upload.

I wasn't aware that we are still supposed to do delayed/10 uploads, now that
the default priority for uploads is medium.

The issue was filed on May 4, with severity important and tagged for jessie.
No reaction. The severity was raised on May 30 to serious. No reaction.
Instead some severity ping-pong was played on other issues. No reaction on
a RC issue for over two months?

I stand corrected. My public apologies for this, specially to you Matthias.

Maybe I need some VACs :)

As you may already know, 2048 is a fun puzzle game in which
you have to move the number tiles across the board. If two
tiles with the same value touch, they merge and their values
add up. The goal is to have a tile with the value 2048.

2048 is a really fun and popular game. Being a game, no other
packages depend on it. There is another package that does the
same thing, called 2048-qt, but it is a graphical version, and
this version is text-mode. It is much more lightweight, it depends
 only on libc.

I would maintain the package, because I am also the upstream maintainer.

Hi Gabriel! What would the difference be with 2048-qt which is already in the

I'd like to note that there are very good reasons for a debian-only,
overlay-style packaging repository too. This section should, in my
opinion, at least acknowledge that, and briefly mention it as an option.
I find it a bit sad that it was outright discouraged.

I'm open to that, but IMO the only case where there are very good reasons
are the case where the upstream data is really huge and not easily
patchable anyway (i.e. the case of openarena-data that Simon Mc Vittie
 described in https://lists.debian.org/debian-devel/2014/08/msg00582.html).

Bandwith and disk space. The upstream data not being easily patchable is just
and addition here (IMPOV). And yes, bandwith and disk space is not so cheap
everywhere.

Are there other reasons that you consider good enough to impose the above
penalties on other possible contributors (i.e. making it impossible to use
gbp pq or similar tools to update debian/patches)?

Yes: when using tools like gbp sometimes (which becomes more valid with
newcomers) don't really know what's really happening. We in the Qt/KDE team
have found that it's much simple and straightforward to just keep debian/ and
teach people the workflow basics, specially when trying to debug a workflow
over IRC :)

Of course, this is experience and YMMV. It works for us at least ;)

If someone wants to use a local branch for keeping the source and use tools
like gpb they are free to do so, locally. IIRC Maxy has achieved this for KDE
stuff.

libechonest-dev - Qt library for The Echo Nest platform - development files
libechonest1.1 - Qt library for communicating with The Echo Nest platform
libechonest1.1-dbg - trasitional dummy package for echonest's debugging symbols
Closes: 629237
Changes:
 libechonest (1.1.8-1) unstable; urgency=low
 .
   * New upstream release (Closes: #629237).
   * Update watch file.
   * Update symbols file.
 - Confirm 1.1.3's symbols for armel.
 - Two symbols were missing in 1.1.8, it seems safe to ignore them.
   * Build-Depend on pkg-kde-tools in order to use pkgkde-symbolshelper.
This will help us with Qt's typedefs that changes with some architectures,
 like qfloat.
   * Disable -Werror instead of some warnings.
   * Set DM-Upload-Allowed: yes.

   * Switch package to multiarch.
 - Build-depend on debhelper = 8.1.3.
 - Add Pre-Depends: ${misc:Pre-Depends} to libechonest1.1.
 - Set debhelper compatibility to 9.
 - Create template files for replacing the arch triplet with sed. Thanks
Pino Toscano and José Manuel Santamaría Lema for the help.
 - Create debian/clean to remove the install files created by debian/rules.
 - Set Multi-Arch: same in libechonest1.1.
 - Override Lintian warning us that compat level 9 has not a correspondent
