Re: [Dx4win] Unique calls

2020-06-13 Thread John Shaw
Thanks Jim,

Not a one click solution but it gets the job done.

Might add. The txt file you create in step 2 is just that a txt file so you can
read it and see the calls. Of course you could just do step 1 and 2 then bring
the txt file into a spread sheet or you favourite txt editor to read and count
the calls and not interfere with the master file in DX4WIN, but doing all 4
steps gets the answer of how many unique calls are in your log or selection
from within DX4WIN itself.

Re: [Dx4win] Unique calls

2020-06-13 Thread John Shaw
Added using a filter selection:

Yes there is a way to find the unique calls in your log or filter selection
from within DX4WIN.

WARNING! If you already have a master call file you want to keep copy and
save it somewhere safe so you can re instate it before you do this as it
will be overwritten. It is the mstrcals.dat file in the DX4WIN save
directory.

Bring up the "Master Calls" window press F1 and follow the 4 steps in help
to making a master call file of the calls in your log. When you do step 4 a
box will come up telling you how many calls are in the Master call file you
created. That is your answer.

If you want to do this with a filter selection make your filter first and
say yes to using the filter when asked. THEN:

>From the help file here are the four steps

1. Export your log using the 'calls' filter

2. Save the file somewhere, and call it calls.txt

3. From the PopUp menu in the Master Calls window select 'Convert'

4. When asked for the file to convert, select the file you created in step 2

Use the %f character function as described under "edit function keys"

Make a file using notepad with just the call you want to use in it and save
it in the save directory. I called mine call and then edited the function
keys to look like this: I have done this: CQ|CQ CQ %fcall% %fcall%Use
%fcall% in any of the F key messages where you want your call sent. The
beauty of this is you can easily change back to your old call or change the
call sent if you have a guest operator by simply editing the call in the
file.

Re: [Dx4win] Exporting SOTA references

2019-11-10 Thread John Shaw
Here is what I do.

When I log a sota contact I put the sota reference in the QSO notes field.

I have made a report format called sota that has Date, Time, Band, Mode,
Callsign and QSO notes fields only.

So I use whatever filter is practical to select the QSO's I want to export then
I bring up the logbook window and select the sota report I have made, then
right mouse on that window and select write to file as csv. Now I have a csv
that I can add my call and v2 fields or make changes necessary keeping the csv
format before uploading the resulting file to the sota database. I use Google
Sheets for making the changes and download the file as csv which is perfect to
upload to the sota database.

A couple of other things I do is change the Band field in DX4win to MHz in the
preferences as that is what sota database wants.

Also I have made a group for sota chases and sota activations. When exporting
the QSO's with a filter on I do a multiple QSO operations, set group number to
the relevant group so I know I have exported them.

Also If the export is an activation I do a LoTW export while the filter is on
and I apply the right QTH details to those QSO's when uploading those to LoTW
since they are from a different QTH location. I make a unique station location
in the LoTW TQSL for each sota summit I operate from so I can do this.

I would also like mode-specific RST length. If you're logging SSB and type in
57, DX4WIN should automatically go to next field.

However, if you are logging the wrong mode, ie. SSB but intending to change it
to FT8 later, that doestn't work. Since I only log FT8 QSOs using File |
Import, this is not a problem for me.

Ignore mode in real time would be the thing to use if logging in the wrong mode
real time?

Hello John,

Having the extra length for CW is nice because it allows you to add things
like 579C for a chirpy signal for 599K for a guy with key clicks (which
happens WAY too often!). Yes, it takes some getting used to after 20 years

Re: [Dx4win] Check For Updates Won't Run

2018-04-01 Thread John Shaw
Yes that is how I see it. I know nothing other than pulling the plug is 100%
secure but that doesn’t mean we need to be complacent either.

I think it is time to put an end date on XP compatibility for DX4WIN.

John,

I suspect you already know the answer to your question. Yes, the security is
weakened. Using a 17 year old

operating system connected to the Internet is not a recommended practice.
Microsoft no longer supports the XP OS.

Weakening security for a small group of users puts everyone else at risk.

Re: [Dx4win] Announce DX

2017-11-11 Thread John Shaw
I have looked too and not found anything to do what you want. I would like
all those options in the announce window to stay unchecked too. Maybe Paul
could change it so if you uncheck or check the tick box it remembers your
selection and stays that way until the user changes it again. Some other
selections in the program work this way so must be able to be done.

The other thing that is tripping me up is the 5 spaces in the rst. I
understand why this was increased for digital stuff but maybe some smarts
could be done so that the extra spaces are only available for modes that
require them. Just a thought.

Re: [Dx4win] A Minor Issue

2017-11-02 Thread John Shaw
While you can get around the impasse with F10 John's observations are
correct in that V9 behaves different to V8 when changing a call and pressing
enter used to work. Now it still works that way when changing other QSO
information and pressing enter still works in V9 with everything but the
callsign. Not saying it's right or wrong just different and inconsistent.

Hello John,

If you want to make and save changes to a QSO, use F10, Update QSO. If you
are going through the log doing buro cards using the F2 key, hitting F2
after making the change will save the changes and do whatever else you have
it set to do in File > Preferences > F2 key.

I am running the latest version 9.02.1134 and noticed something odd. In
going through my incoming bureau QSL cards I found one for which I had
busted the call. I found him in my logbook viewer and brought the incorrect
QSO to the screen. Then I changed the callsign to the correct one and
pressed . I would have received a "Do you want to make the changes"
warning previously but this did not happen and the callsign could not be
corrected. If I changed the QSL route, etc. and pressed , the
modified QSL route would be saved and the corrected callsign would also be
saved.
Just a minor issue.

Re: [Dx4win] ver9

2017-10-26 Thread John Shaw
If you make this feature available please make it an option in the preferences
so it can be enabled or disabled. Unless you can fix the way DX4WIN handles a
radio not been present all the time. While it might save one keystroke it will
cause many putting out fires because a radio is not always switched on when
booting DX4WIN because it can't handle no radio present without stopping the
radio function, then it has to be started again. Some logging programs handle
this much better than DX4WIN and it isn't a problem but that is another story.

I echo K4WI’s request that an option be provided in DX4WIN to avoid having to
press F9 every time the program is started so the auto atu is set for the
particular frequency and the program is ready for entering a QSO. I think this
should be the default and should be fine for most people using the program. I
find it a nuisance to have to press F9 every time I switch on my radio and the
program before I can start operating.

Then, I went to the update area and updated a couple of files (as the

that my logbook set-up had returned to the default setting!

I set-up the logbook again, updated again, and the same thing happened! Yes,

I must be doing something wrong - surely?

Can anyone advise.

2017-10-21 Thread John Shaw
I too had a scale factor of 80 and have increased it to 110 to get 16
characters in the callsign box without going into the prefix box. I also have
played with the skins. While before I think they used to cause window creep?
Now seem to stay put now. Nice.

Migration from V8 to V9 has gone well here. Often I will run old and new for a
while till satisfied new isn't going to major distruct but having put V9
through my usual routines all seems fine and am up running with it now.

Although it has been a long time since any updates for DX4WIN I was still
mostly happy with V8 and enjoyed the many years of stable service from it. I
am now enjoying many of the improvements in V9. Looks like it will be a stable
friend for some time now.

Thanks all.

Hello,

I have a dedicated machine that runs XP Pro that is not connected to the
Internet in any way. I have it connected to my K2 and K1 for CW keying but I do
pull the plug to run a straight key, bug or the keyer inside the K2 and
K1 rigs.

I have been one of the longtime guys that uses the DX4WIN program since day
one. So I decided to do the upgrade but I first went out and purchased a new
USB Flash Drive. I backed up the entire folder for DX4WIN 8.05 version.

I downloaded the new DX4WIN 9.01 and purchased the license. A few hours later
I received my receipt and the V9 license file.

I loaded the file onto the computer that is on the Internet running Win 7.
I then loaded onto the XP Pro computer. I then copied my log file into the V
9.01. Everything opened up fine and seems to work great. Now for the real test.
I did an update on the V 9.01 on the Win 7 computer. I copied the DX4WIN
Version 9.01 file from the Win 7 computer to the XP Pro computer.

I opened up my log file and everything is working fine. Now I just have to go
and transfer some files I use in the DX4WIN for CW and PSK to their proper
location.

One thing I would like to do is make the windows larger on the XP Pro machine
but I have a larger monitor I can use but that will be at a later time.

Thanks to Paul and the Beta Testers.

Re: [Dx4win] DX4win Updater

2017-01-24 Thread John Shaw
Not sure if this might help or be a red herring but I was almost about to
send a sorry it doesn't work.

Win7 here. The Microsoft run-time library was not on the computer. My
first attempt at installing the Microsoft run-time library failed, I knew it
failed because it did not complete. It was however now in the list of
programs on the computer so I uninstalled it, rebooted the computer and with
no other programs running ran the install again, this time it completed and
now v9 of Jim's updater runs fine. I have also installed Microsoft run-time
library and v9 of Jim's updater on an old XP laptop and it all works fine
there too.

So am wondering if the first failed attempt installing Microsoft run-time
library was because I had other programs running on my computer. Certainly
after the reboot and on an idle computer it installed without a problem and
that is all I did different. No expert, could be a red herring, all I know
is now I am a happy camper again.

1. Did you disable your anti-virus software during installation?

Wonder if there is a fix for this? I have more than 254 Group names. (I do
a lot of contesting!). Although I can individually change the group number
for a QSO record to be any value - Say 300, if I try to do a Multiple QSO
operation and change the group names for a number of QSOs to anything more
than 254, then it tells me that no QSO has been changed.

I sure others must have seen this or am I doing something wrong? I have
157,000 QSOs in the file.

Re: [Dx4win] Print QSL Cards

2016-03-20 Thread John Shaw
I have done this. Not sure if this is the best way but here is what I did.

I made a custom label the size of the card with nr across 1 nr down 1 Paper
size Custom then adjusted the left and top spacing to put the printing where
I wanted it. It actually worked quite well with an ink jet, BUT.

A couple of thoughts on consumer grade printers. Ink jet printing is
hopeless if it gets wet and I have had people request a replacement card
because the postie dropped the letter in a puddle or something. Laser
printers don't print very well on heavy card just not enough heat to fuse
the toner properly, yes some have a setting for heavier paper. I'll let
others decide if their laser fuses the toner good enough but I have gone
back to labels and a laser printer.

This is my third call. I have three different cards (and styles). I can do
labels for the other other two. My current printer is a Brother HL-5250. I
also have a HP OfficeJet Pro 8610, but that has not as easy to setup (as I

Someone please correct me if I am wrong but, I don't believe DX4Win installs
anything anywhere but its own folder. Therefore, when moving to a different
PC or HD, all you need to do is, copy the entire DX4W805 folder to the new
location, recreate your desktop shortcuts, and run.

If it is any consolation both these issues will be configuration problems.
I have used MMTTY and WINKEY with DXWIN through a MKII for years and have
10's of thousands of QSO's in the log with this setup. I'd be the first to
admit that DX4WIN could do with some improvement in this area but it does
all work. The key is to be consistent and make sure each part of the chain
has the same instructions. Follow the setups in the MKII help, they work.

 Cort,

As always, start with the example configuration for DX4Win and MK II
from microHAM. In Router (Help | Download Documents) or on-line in
the MK II area at www.microham-USA.com/support.html.

DX4Win's support for MMTTY is a bit strange in FSK in that you must
run MMTTY stand alone from the same path as used in DX4Win to
configure the FSK port and set Configure MMTTY | MISC | TX Port to
COM-TxD(FSK)
because there is no way to pass the port/FSK setting from the DX4Win
 MMTTY window.

Guys,

You can do a filter like:

F8 to specify filter
!K in the prefix field (NOT USA)
* in State field
Enter to start filtering

You will see KL7 HI etc with the matching state abbreviation; if not, you
have a problem.

Do a F8 filter, K in the Prefix box and a state in the state box, say AL.
Then do a filter count. Then new F8 filter just AL in the state box this

Hi

I import the LOTW download (with all details checked) into my 8.05 log and I
have just checked my log by searching using F8 with the State/Oblast
abbreviation in the box.
I do not get one single non-USA call-sign appearing!

I checked against.
AL GA IN KS MA MD MO NV OR and TN.

I wonder why ?

73 John 5Β4ΑΗΚ

I just noticed an unusual problem while importing LotW QSOs into the log.
When a Russian station has its Oblast set in the LotW QSO details
that matches an abbreviation of a US state, the state flag for that
particular QSO in DX4Win gets changed from blank to the state
matching the abbreviation and, in addition, the zone of the station
changes to the zone matching the state.

This is something that changed in LoTW in the last 6 months or so.
After every import, I always search for Import: in the Notes for this
QSO field. If I run across the situation described above, I simply
erase the State field in the QSO (and save it using F10) and all
 returns to normal.

I hope Paul can fix this in a future version of DX4WIN, i.e. qualify
filling in the State field with the DXCC entity.

Re: [Dx4win] LotW import problem

2015-01-22 Thread John Shaw
I also import the LOTW download (with all details checked) into my 8.04
log.

I did a check and couldn't find any non K Prefix QSO's with a state
assigned. 194803 QSO's in the log.

This was my process for checking:

Do a F8 filter, K in the Prefix box and a state in the state box, say AL.
Then do a filter count. Then new F8 filter just AL in the state box this
time no Prefix assigned and do a filter count. If both filter counts match
then there are no QSO's with AL as a state that don't have K as a Prefix?

Re: [Dx4win] Tuning indicator with MMTTY?

2015-01-14 Thread John Shaw
 Hi Eric,

Possibly nothing wrong but the MMTTY window with the tuning indicator you
are looking for has a tendency to get hidden. Have a look in your tool bar
at the bottom of your screen and see if the MMTTY icon is there, click on it
this should bring the window to the top. You will have to arrange your
windows so it is not covered.

Correct Dan, I have seen that too somewhere? I hadn't used that as I found
it saves screen real estate to let other windows cover most of it and just
leave enough the tuning indicator visible to use it. :-)

Thank you for the replies and the TS480 file. It must have been added to
the distribution of DX4WIN sometime since my last upgrade which was a long
time ago now. Sounds like you have used it Ernie without issues so I'm sure
I will be good to go when get some power on the rig.

I also will be setting it up with WriteLog. I have the latest version here
and it doesn't have the TS480 in the list either so will have to poke around
with that too but one step at a time.

Thanks again for the help.

Hello John,

Thank you for your email.

I apologize for the inconvenience, but the Online DXCC program is currently

Again, I'm sorry for the inconvenience.

The DX4WIN country file, DX4WIN.CTY Release #135 is now available from:

http://www.country-files.com/dx4win-info/

You can read the release notes at:

http://www.country-files.com/dx4win-cty-135-31-July-2014/

You can (and should) use the DX4WIN Data Updater to update the file:

http://dx4win.ad1c.us/updater/

This release has the new IOTA that were announced at the 50th annual IOTA
convention in July 2014.

This is a huge release, meant to get more in-sync with the callsign and
prefix data on ClubLog.org. There is still much work to be done.

There may be new errors, so let me know about them ASAP.

Re: [Dx4win] Converting DXQ to ADIF Files

2014-02-04 Thread John Shaw

You could do something like this in notepad using edit/replace. Put
NOTES:28Rx=14, in the find what box and FREQ_RX:814. in the replace box.
If there are different bands and the number up to the comma and total number
of characters changes then you will have to repeat the process with the
appropriate characters in the edit/replace boxes for each band. Its
actually not hard to do.

Hi, Paul.

I apologize for not being clear. I already have correctly populated FREQ
fields and Rx=nn,nnnkHz-populated NOTES fields. When converting a typical
QSO to ADIF, these will result in FREQ:8tt.t for transmit
frequencies and NOTES:12Rx=rr,rrrkHz for receive frequencies. These
NOTES fields are not ADIF-compliant for receive frequencies.

The proper ADIF format for the above receive frequency should be
FREQ_RX:8rr.r Let me give a sample from my log:

QSO_DATE:8:d19990109 TIME_ON:6163900 CALL:5AB7WZ FREQ:81 4.26000
PFX:3AB7 DXCC:3291 CONT:2NA MODE:3SSB BAND:380m RST_SENT:259
RST_RCVD:259 CQZ:13 STATE:2NV QSL_RCVD:1N LOTW_QSL_SENT:1Y
LOTW_QSLSDATE:8:d20030923 NAME:3Bob
NOTES:28Rx=14,255kHz Nevada ARES Net EOR

The entry, paying attention to the last line, should be:

QSO_DATE:8:d19990109 TIME_ON:6163900 CALL:5AB7WZ FREQ:814.26000
PFX:3AB7 DXCC:3291 CONT:2NA MODE:3SSB BAND:380m RST_SENT:259

LOTW_QSLSDATE:8:d20030923 NAME:3Bob
FREQ_RX:814.25500 NOTES:15Nevada ARES Net EOR

I am looking for a utility that will convert the first entry to the second
so I can transfer it to an ADIF-compliant application. I hope I have done a
better job explaining what I am looking for.

Re: [Dx4win] DXCC QSL Download - New?

2013-11-08 Thread John Shaw
 Hi Dan,

Thanks' for that but DXCC QSL file we are referring to is a recent
initiative by ARRL on LoTW and is not referred to in the application notes
on Jim's page.

At this point in time I realise having support for making use of this file
and automatically importing the award information within DX4WIN is probably
not going to happen, Paul? This would be a seriously cool addition to
DX4WIN.

While the ADIF file is readily readable it's not very user friendly for a
person to use as a source to manually enter the useful DXCC award
information back into DX4WIN. Is there someone who would be willing to
write some sort of GUI that would make reading the file and inputting the
information manually into DX4WIN easier. In my case I have nearly 2400
entries to make.

That's the reason ARRL added it, to allow data in your DXCC record, when
it's available, to be queried.
It's good to be able to tell which one of the dozens of QSOs with a common

Hello
I´ve just noticed today that there is a new menu option on the LOTW account
status page It reads DXCC QSL Download Also at the bottom of the righ hand
box  there is a new bullet:
* For an ADIF download with the details of all QSLs in your DXCC
record use DXCC QSL DOWNLOAD
[https://lotw.arrl.org/lotwuser/logbook/qslcards.php?ac_acct=1].
The link leads to the same Menu Option that is actually a ADIF download.Has
anyone investigated this yet? Is there a tool to compare and selectively fix
eventual mismatches? I have been searching for a tool that helps me
determine exactly which QSO was credited for each band / mode DXCC credit.
Maybe this is the way.
Thank youMarcelo,PY1KN

 Hi Andy,

The (HOLDING) feature is handy if you want to scroll back up the DX SPOTS to
review them and not be bumped to the bottom when a new spot comes in. Yes
the INSERT key toggles it on/off. HOLDING is also initiated if you sort the
DX Spots window by frequency and is not toggled off when you go to another
sort method so you must toggle it of manually.

 Hi Dave,

No expert but I think your whole situation could be made much simpler if you
upgrade to V8.5. I think from memory somewhere in the version history the
issue of LoTW cfm's been exported from DX4WIN to Clublog was fixed so there
is no longer any need to send LoTW reports to Clublog to get the cfm's in
there.

I am using version 7.7.2

I had spotted a few anomalies between DX4Win and Clublog, so I have cleared
my Clublog data and reloaded it totally from DX4Win.

The QSO totals look about right, but I now have a heap more anomalies with
QSO confirmations.
Most of my confirmations are from LoTW, so I upload the lotwreport file to
both DX4Win and Clublog.
For the few paper cards I get, I set the QSO conf flag in DX4Win and then
export the few specific QSOs and upload them to Clublog.

This has worked fine up until now.

To refresh Clublog, I exported my complete log, but there were a lot of
confirmations missing...
I then exported all my LoTW QSLs again and uploaded them to Clublog.. Still
a load of QSLs missing.

I did a filter on the conf flag (to get the QSL card confirmations) and it
selected thousands more records than I have QSLs card for.

What should the procedure be to properly export all confirmations for
Clublog?

Are there any Clublog Users who have done a complete Clublog refresh
successfully?

Thanks for any help.

Re: [Dx4win] LOTW Not Found in Log

2012-12-11 Thread John Shaw
Use the last item under the LOTW menu review QSOs not found I can almost
guarantee they are in your log but some of the information doesn't match.
Probably because the other party has shifted QTH, changed their location
details and re uploaded their whole log busting everything they had done
previously so now you have new conflicting information from previous
imports. Unless it is very important to you this phenomenon will do your
head in trying to figure which is correct. See for your self but in every
case this is what I found was going on.

1. Does this mean they are confirmed in LOTW, but not in my Dx4win

2. If so, Can I run an Import that brings them into Dx4win or do I
have to manually enter them?

Re: [Dx4win] How to find what new countries I worked

2012-12-04 Thread John Shaw
Probably not the answer your looking for but join Club Log upload you log to
that. Under Timeline it provides first worked dates so it's easy to see how
many you new ones were worked each year. There are many other interesting
tools/reports available too. Other than that running some reports in DX4WIN
using before and after filter dates, writing them to a csv file and
manipulating them in XL would be another route. Depends on how important it
is to know this to how much time you wish to spend on it.

It seems to me that someone must have figured this out, but I couldn't find
any info, so before I re-invent the wheel: The DX4WIN Progress report for
DXCC will give you a summary of how you've progressed since a previous date.
I'd like a way to get the details for that so that I can see what new
entities I've worked over the last year. I can probably massage the data to
get this info, but I was wondering if anyone had figured out a simple way to
do this.

Re: [Dx4win] QR-Code

2012-08-03 Thread John Shaw
 Great idea,

I don't know much about QR codes but have been told they can store up to
4,000 characters so why not use the already established ADIF format to store
the information.

Biggest limitation is it would have to become popular to be useful but it
would be great for QSL managers and bureau's.

On behalf of the author, PY1KN, a suggestion that should be considered to
the wish list.

73 de PY2YP - Cesar

Automated QSL reading -- a suggestion for software developers

Marcelo Gomes -- PY1KN

ARRL's LOTW is a great thing, saving a lot of work for managers of large
dx-peditions or big contest stations, as well as active Dxers.

However, paper QSL cards are not going to disappear anytime soon.

Whenever I receive a bunch of QSL cards from the bureau, I have to
manually enter the other station callsign in my logging software and
look for matches in my logbook. Then I can take appropriate action,
marking the QSO as confirmed and marking a QSL for printing.

If you receive a large batch it can take many hours. There must be a
better way.

Nowadays QR-codes have become ubiquitous, as its an easy way to create
free format machine readable information.

So, if in addition to the traditional QSO data lines e can add a QR code
with the same information, the logging software could decode and search
for matches and take appropriate action.

The best solution would be to set a standard way to write the QSO data.
I´ve made a simple test, writing 5 QSOs with W1AW, using ; as field
separator according to the following pattern:

Callsign

mmdd ;hh:mm; Mhz; band; mode; RS(T); QSL

A sample 5-QSO data in this format would look like

W1AW

20120130;00:10;21.025;15M;CW;599;PSE

20120131;01:22;14.185;20M;SSB;59;PSE

20120317;22:12;10.145;30M;RTTY;599;TKS

20120401;10:00;;12M;PSK31;599;PSE

20120718;23:18;7.023;40M;CW;599;PSE

Note that the 4^th QSO has no frequency info, just the band. In this
case the blank fiels results in 2 adjacent separators (;;)

The resulting QR-Code image is example would be:

This image could be added to my outgoing QSL to W1AW. A QSL printing
service like GlobalQSL could generate it automatically from the QSO data
uploaded and print it directly in the card.

The printing routines of the logging programs could include the option
to print it on a blank space of the card, or on a label,

A QR-image can hold up to 255 characters, if we consider typical line
with the formatting I used as holding 36 characters, there is space to
easily fit 8 QSOs in the image. I have tried to use a leaner format,
eliminating the frequency information, the hour-minute separator (:),
the M abbreviation in the band and use only P or T for QSL status, link
the example below, but the gain is not relevant, especially if we
consider that plain text information also has to appear in the card. In
practice, we don't see more than 7 QSO lines in a card.

WIAW

20120401;1000;160;RTTY;599;P

(example of more condensed formatting)

The first software developer who jumps into this will set the standard.
Maybe we don't need the frequency information, maybe we can just write P
or T for the QSL PSE or TKS.

Time will tell if this idea evolves.

last entry to somewhere in the middle of my log. The new qso is still at the

anything. What happened and how can I correct it? I haven't done anything

Re: [Dx4win] Splitting a file

One way would be to export the whole log for LoTW and assign the appropriate
date range option when you are using TQSL to sign it. Run it twice once
with the range for you old call then again for the new one giving them a
logical name so you know which is which then upload the resulting files to
the appropriate call in LoTW.

Re: [Dx4win] Added Feature

I simply envisioned another box in the QSO entry window that would be
populated with the appropriate information automatically without any request
just like it is with the spots, you shouldn't have to do any ALT B the
data base is there and DX4WIN obviously already looks for matches to
populate the spots window.

As for screen real-estate perhaps the QSL manager box could be shifted down
next to the QSL method box and its existing position used to display Memb
information relating to the call in the callsign entry box.

Usually i keep record from qsl cards about who is dx4win user. This is a
personal group just for me. I would like to know it when i meet someone on
the air. Maybe we can talk about dx4win. I write dx4win user in Notes for
this Call . You could write the membership there. It comes up every time
you fill the callsign.
If you mean an automated way to see if someone is LotW user for example,
this is different.
I believe a good way for Paul to manage it, is to make a pseudo cluster
spot.
Alt+A spots the station on the air.
How do you think if Alt+B puts the call in dx spot window and in bandmap
without to spot him really!!!

It would be useful to have a field in the QSO window for Members that

other memberships after you enter the callsign in the QSO window.

Re: [Dx4win] LOTWREPORT - NOT FOUND

2011-12-14 Thread John Shaw
Hi Randy yes it's a mine field, which is the most correct information,
sometimes they realise their mistake and upload again. I have also found
people sometimes do the QTH change when they operated from a different
location then upload their whole log and screw up everything previously
loaded. To save my sanity I accept that there will be errors at this level
and move on. :-)

I think the Cnfm flag gets set differences or not.

I see this all the time and it's mostly because of a mismatch in something
like a county between what's in your log and what's in the LoTW confirmation
record. I get a lot of these after I do a state QSO party and work some
mobile/portable stations not in their home county.
When they upload to LoTW they just use their regular certificate that
populates their home county. DX4WIN sees this as a mismatch and doesn't set
the LoTW confirm flag for the QSO. It's up to you to correct the log or just
manually set the LoTW Cnfm flag.

Re: [Dx4win] Using different calls

2011-09-02 Thread John Shaw
 Hi Larry,

Thanks for taking the time to explain all that, yes I did all that pretty
much verbatim and yes it works but what a monster to administer. Every time
you want to change one little thing. So yes that is a work around but I
like making QSO's on air not shuffling files. :-)

I think for now my one file with the callsign only seems to work FB. I was
just wondering if some clever person out there had a smarter idea than
either of these methods.

Perhaps one of the things on my wish list is for the %~ function to be
detached from the registered user callsign in the preferences. These days a
legit user may have several calls and maybe use a different one only for a
short period of time and want to change back and forth between different
calls often.

John,

Imagine that you create three subdirectories: \MACROS, \ZL1BYZmacros and
\ZL9ABCmacros. In the ZL1 and ZL9 subdirectories you place identically named
files: FK_F1.txt, FK_F2.txt, FK_F3.txt...

If F1 in your DX4WIN function keys is CallCQ, then in the file
ZL1BYZmacros\FK_F1.txt you would place CQ CQ CQ de ZL1BYZ ZL1BYZ K,
whereas within ZL9ABCmacros\FK_F1.txt would be CQ CQ CQ de ZL9ABC ZL9ABC
K. You would follow that pattern for all of the function keys - identical
files with identical macros -- except for the callsign - in those two
subdirectories. (This technique only issues ONE file request once per
function key press.)

Next, within Dx4Win, define all of the functions keys to call those
filenames BUT refer to the \MACROS subdirectory. Thus the F1 CallCQ
definition would be CallCQ|%f..\MACROS\FK_F1%, F2 ReplyCQ
ReplyCQ|%f..\MACROS\FK_F2%...

Finally, when you want to be ZL1BYZ, use Windows Explorer to copy/paste all
files from \ZL1BYZmacros into \MACROS. When you want to be ZL9ABC,
copy/paste all of the files from \ZL9ABCmacros into \MACROS.

[Dx4win] Using different calls

2011-09-01 Thread John Shaw
I want an easy way to operate DX4WIN on the same computer, operator even the
same log file and be able to easily change the call I send in the keyboard
macro's. The rest of a macro can stay the same just change the call. It
would have been logical to be able to edit the call under the preferences so
that %~ would be able to do this but no that would be too simple.

I know I can have the macro's call a file, store actual message in that and
have different sets but that is clumsy. I did think I could put a call
under one ctrl macro and call that with say %18 for ctrl F8 when a macro
wants to send the call. This works but only once in a macro or I get a
recursive error, so CQ %18 K for CQ ZL1BYZ K works but CQ %18 %18 K for CQ
ZL1BYZ ZL1BYZ K does not. Finally I have come up with using %fcall% in
place of my call in the macro and having one file called call.txt in the
save directory. This works but it just seems dumb that the computer has to
look up the same piece of information from an external file each time, maybe
3 times in one CQ when it could have been held within the program it self.

Any thoughts?

Just use the date range when signing the adif file you exported from DX4WIN.
If you set out a list on paper perhaps a range of a year for each year of
your log, cross off each one as you go through the signing process for that
year giving the resultant tq8 file a logical individual name, then when you
have completed all the years upload the individual tq8 files one by one to
the LoTW server.

Re: [Dx4win] Lotwreport.notfound file

2011-03-01 Thread John Shaw
Hi Jim, if I could add a bit of what I have observed on this.

You are correct with the . In the left column. Not much we can do about
that, if people keep uploading their whole logs over and over they will keep
showing up on this list. For those LoTW users who do this, you may not
think it a problem but it can be.

The X is a little more complex than just QSO not found.

For example. I get a fair number of X in the left column and it is usually
a station in the USA. This happens because they have shifted QTH to another
state or county but not requiring a callsign change. So now it shows up on
the not found list, NOT because the QSO is not in the log but the
information contained in the QSO record does not match. Being made aware of
this may be a good thing but it is difficult to know which is the correct
information. For example a QSO shows up in the not found list marked X when
I click on it in the QSO not found box and get potential matches, sure
enough there is an obvious match, call, date, time, mode, band all match but
the county is different, both county information coming from LoTW. This
could mean several things. The first information is wrong and the recent
upload is an attempt to correct an error. IMHO unlikely. Second it could be
simply that the station has shifted QTH and have changed their location
information when doing uploads but unfortunately they upload their whole log
overwriting all previous QSO's with incorrect information for the previous
time period.

So to sum up DX4WIN is working correctly but unfortunately other peoples
actions are generating lots of noise in these reports. Unfortunately I must
admit this does make one tend to ignore the report completely as in both of
the cases above no logical action can be taken.

What means the number located at the end of each line of this file (2
for the QSO with F5NSB, 4 for the QSO with 5Q2T... in the example below) ?

The number in the right-hand column is the group number of the QSO, from
your log. My understanding is that if the group number is NOT zero, then
the QSO was found in your log. It could also be zero if no group number was
assigned to that QSO.

If there is a small dot (like a period) in the left-hand column (as shown
below), the QSO was already confirmed via LoTW (from a previous
import). If there is an 'X', then the QSO from LoTW was NOT found in
your log (and the group number will be (0) zero).

Ok Jim I hadn't read you application note. Yes I usually do just accept the
date offered which is the date of the last download I'm not entirely
convinced that explains all the . Entries I get, for example the last
download generated 205 . Reports and 13 X reports, the previous ones report
similar numbers. Assuming I did the download at 23:59utc and captured a
days worth of cross over's, I wouldn't mind 205 LoTW cfms a day X 365 =
74825 LoTW cfms a year, I only have 109,000 + QSO's in the LoTW system.

More to the point than how these QSO's become eligible for report the fact
remains regardless to if they are re submits from the other party or worse a
system shortfall in timing of reports, there is no logical action to take so
why does DX4WIN report them?

This problem isn't caused by people ... uploading their whole logs over and

Re: [Dx4win] Add an island name

2011-01-18 Thread John Shaw
I have never really gotten into the IOTA thing too deep but the addition of
the extra level with the new IOTA Island box in V8 it kind of encourages you
to take a little more notice.

The group that put on these two IOTA's did a terrific job and I managed to
work them a couple of times on each IOTA. Unfortunately the information on
their web page is not complete in respect to which Island in the Diego
Ramirez Islands group they were at, in fact to the un initiated it does seem
that they were on Diego Ramirez Island full stop which cant be because there
is no such individual island. To add to the confusion there is an Ramirez
Island which is one of the islands in SA094 IOTA.

The only reference I can find to which of the three islands that make up
SA097 that they were actually on is one of the entries in the Guestbook
thanks them for Gonzalo. Can any of you eagle eyes see a better reference?
It would be nice to get confirmation of this as the IOTA site says SA097 has
never been activated before, so it will be quite a achievement for these two
ops to be the first to activate it. I hope they have all the paperwork in
order to satisfy the IOTA awards program.

Yes John, that is the island name. Diego Ramirez is the island group.

This is how DX4WIN selects island names from within an island group (IOTA).

Dwayne perhaps the step in addition to what Jim has pointed out is when you
have clicked on the link in the help file and your browser has opened up on
the RSGB fulllist.xml page you then need to do a save as in the browser,
navigate it to the DX4w###/save folder, click save and it should be done. Re
start DX4WIN and it should work. Note you need to fill the IOTA box with a
reference number, e.g. (SA097) before you will get a listing in the IOTA
Island box.

Hi Dwane,

The IOTA group list (reference numbers) is included in the country file
(DX4WIN.CTY)

The Islands list (fulllist.xml) must be downloaded from the RSGB web site.
In Help | Contents, click on the Index tab and search for IOTA.
Under that heading you'll find an entry about the fulllist download.

I think unless I'm missing something the TUNE function has not been
programmed into the DX4WIN WinKey keyboard. It is available from the CW

Sorry Jorge, DX4WIN does not yet have LoTW build-in like some other

 some day.

 73 - Jim AD1C

Jim and others,

I don´t think it will be a very good upgrade due the fact That a lot of
users have multiple Calls (home call, contest calls etc) in one big logbook.
Its easy to check each log when they have a separated groupnumber but This
doesn´t always mean that it is for a different call.

I am 100% sure that Paul can add it (bullet proof) for one call but in case
you use more calls with different login passwords the risk is getting
higher that users can make mistakes (wrong groupnumber or call
etc) and
If all data would be auto uploaded I think you can imagine what a mess it
will create on LoTW.
Since you can´t delete the uploads you still need to do it all again
manually After you first found out what was wrong.
With those few extra clicks you pay more attention in what you are
doing.

Re: [Dx4win] ROS, Left Behind

2010-07-03 Thread John Shaw
ROS, developed by José Albert Nieto Ros, is a new digital mode. Using
spread spectrum and 1 or 16 Baud signalling rates it is designed to cope
with disturbances, low level signals, meteor scatter and moon bounce and
claims that receiving signals down to -35 dB (!) with 1 Bd signalling rate
and -30 dB (!) with 16 Bd are possible.

You can tell a ROS spot because they usually advertise the fact in the
comments field and that in it self is fine.

The part that gets me is that even though set frequencies have been
suggested, kind of like channels the users of the mode seem hell bent on
being very prolific spotters and even auto beacons just in case the rest of
the world is missing their existence.

If your into QRP and weak signal work you may find this new mode exciting.

Re: [Dx4win] INSERT HOLDING ?

2010-07-01 Thread John Shaw
Well it does keep scrolling until the highlighted spot with the bold black
lines is the top line on you screen but it holds at that and the new spots
coming in don't bother it, unless the line you are looking at is the very
top line in the scroll back buffer then it gets dumped (FIFO) as a new spot
comes in but you still stay at the same position. If you want more scroll
back history then you will have to increase that in the preferences under
packet 2.

With this ROS Mode thing flooding the system with un necessary spots the
time line for our scroll back capability is going to be shorter without
larger buffers.

Other than look at my Gee Wiz latest toy can any one see any benefit in
these ROS spots. I need a ROS filter.

The way I see it is the Insert (Holding) when used in either the

Re: [Dx4win] INSERT HOLDING ?

2010-06-30 Thread John Shaw
Hmmm, not the way I see it.

The way I see it is the Insert (Holding) when used in either the packet or
spot screen, stops the screen from automatically scrolling to the newest
info. It does not stop new information from coming in but allows you to
stay focused of previous info that would normally be continuously running up
and off your screen every time new info comes in. Very useful IMHO.

Re: [Dx4win] INSERT HOLDING ?

I might add that since the Insert (Holding) only pauses the scrolling and
not the passing of info, (Holding) the packet screen will not stop the Spot
screen from scrolling. If you want the Spot screen to pause then use insert
in that screen.

Re: [Dx4win] Group question

2010-06-23 Thread John Shaw
Using version 8.04.

When I set the group to 0 in the preferences and then go to real time
entry the group is 0 so I cant reproduce your result for that one.

If I set the group in preferences to a group not previously set up and go to
real time entry it does come up as the group set and will log it as such.

As a consequence after that if I go to Filter|Edit Group Names the new
group generated this way does not show up in the list and am not being able
to use Filter|Select to find that QSO, it can be searched for by using F8.
Since F8 search can be used it can be set to another group using
QSO|Multiple QSO Operations.

So other than being able to do something in an illogical fashion it would
seem to be function ok. If I want to have a new group of QSO's I have
always generated the new group by using the Filter|Edit Group Names function
before logging or importing a QSO to that group in my log.

As a aside note I don't log any QSO's to group 0, start from group 1 then
you will be able to do a group filter search for any and or all QSO's in the
log. 0 is a group of everything, including itself, a group of all groups
if you like.

Will try the date range filter to and try to set groups.  I saw somewhere
that you had to set a group prior to import.

I just set the FILE|PREFERENCE QSO group to 0.  Saved change on EXIT.  Then
clicked on QSO Real time in QSO window and group changed from 2 (what I had
set as my default) to 0 (the changed I just made).  Changed group to 5 and
clicked real time QSO and 5 displayed in QSO WINDOW group.  I do not have a
group 5 established in the QSO|FILTER|EDIT GROUPS window.  manual it will
accept any number in the range 0-255.

This is very easy to do.  Save the charge made on FILE|PREFERENCES|QSO click
on QSO|Real Time in QSO WINDOW and you are good to go.

Sending this to reflector also this time.

You can use F8 to make a date range filter (in your prefs, first set
date filter to Range), then use a multiple QSO operation to assign a
group number to those filtered QSOs.

John

I have GROUPS 0, 1, 2, and 3defined.

If I search for any of the 4 groups by group number I get only those QSOs
for that group. When I total the number of QSOs I selected in FILTER
(group) of the 4 groups I get the total number of QSOs in my log. That
tells me the filter function by groups is working properly.

Not sure what you mean by illogical fashion. I defined my needs for groups
and the log does sort (filter) by those needs, in otherwords, my
groups.

I have my entire log for N7KA going back to June 1978 is entered into
DX4WIN. Group 0 identiined as all QSOs prior to 01 JAN1983 (the date that
VUCC started). I lived in Tucson, AZ in 01 JAN 1983 so have defined Group 1
by the 6 digit grid square I was living and operating from. Group 2 is
defined by my current 6 digit grid square beginning 24 FEB, 1985. Group 3
is defined as the grid square I operated portable on 6M Sunday 20 June 2010.
They all sort properly when I select FILTER and enter the group number.

At start-up my correct group 2 is displayed in the QSO WINDOW GROUP box.
(that is what I have set as default) If I change and SAVE the group number
in the FILE|PREFERENCES|QSO group box, this becomes the group number
displayed in the QSO WINDOW upon starting the program. You MUST do
QSO|Real-time after the program is booted to set the program to begin
logging for the day, otherwise you get data from the last QSO entered in
your log. BTW all 4 of my groups do come up at start if I have defined a
group as the default.

l also keep my group number and description written on paper and stored in
my manual as backup; group number description, date range, and any other
info I determine is relevant.

[Dx4win] 8.04 Set Name and QTH

2010-05-05 Thread John Shaw
Having a look at 8.04 and I must say so far it looks real good.

One little question on the Set Name and QTH since I would be upgrading
from version 7.02, I need to run this to try and populate the separate Name
and QTH boxes in version 8.04 as best we can from information from the 7.02
log. In many cases it gets it correct, even when there was complex
information it seems to intuitively put the correct information in the right
box. But there are a lot that there is simple information e.g.. Paul, was
the original and it does not put Paul in the Name box but just leaves it as
a new note. Any idea's why it does a great job on some and seemingly
ignores processing others?

73 John ZL1BYZ.

PS Jim I did read in your upgrading tips reference to Online help for this
but all I can find is the F1 help which covers the basics. Is there more or
is that what you were referring to?

counties awards etc so DX4WIN is correct for those awards you need a paper
QSL LoTW does not count. :(

Subject: [Dx4win] WPX, WAZ,County Windows Not Showing LOTW QSO's as
Confirmed

Hello,

Not sure why I didn't notice this before but today I saw that although
DX4WIN shows QSO's confirmed via LOTW in the Main, Country, and Same Call
windows, these same QSO's are only shown as worked in the WPX and WAZ
windows.

For example: I have VP6DX confirmed via LOTW on all bands, 80-10, SSB and
CW, but those confirmations only show up in the Main Window, Same Call and
Country windows.  In the WAZ and WPX windows these QSO's are only shown as
worked. Going through my log I see this same situation with other
LOTW-confirmed calls: ZL1BYZ, VK4MA, ZK3OU, 5W0OU, DR1A, S79GM, TX4T,
and KL7J, to name a few.

Confirmed LOTW QSO's with HH4/K4QD and TG9IRP show L in the WPX window but
confirmed in the Main,Same Call, and Country windows.

This situation also exists with stateside contacts in the County window.  As
an example, I recently worked N4RJ in McIntosh county during the 2010 GA QSO
Party. I received an LOTW confirmation but there was not a corresponding
change in the county window as it still shows Worked vice Confirmed.  N4RJ
is one of several contacts that have this same problem.

Also, as the QSO's mentioned above were all confirmed via LOTW, that seems
to be the common thread in this situation.  When I import a LOTW file from
the LOTW website I use the option Imported QSO sets LOTW Confirmed flag.

In the Main window, if I also check the Confirm box (as if I received a
paper QSL) then the WPX and WAZ windows do show a confirmed vice worked
status.

Under Preferences|Station I have checked all bands 160-10 (except 60);
SSB/CW/PSK31 under Modes; and Phone/CW/Digital in the Mode group.

Under Preferences|Import I have Accept DX4WIN values displayed and under
Error Reporting I have Prefix differences checked, which I believe is the
default value.

I have received occasional lotwreport.notfound reports after doing an LOTW
download.  Admittedly, I did not pay much attention to them as I saw that
the QSO's listed on these reports did show up as confirmed in the Main, Same
Call, and Country windows.  However, looking more closely at an old report I
see that the calls on one of these reports don't show up as confirmed in one
or more of the windows mentioned above (WPX, WAZ, County) but do show up as
confirmed in the Main, Same Call, and Country windows.

I downloaded update.bat when Jim, AD1C, made it available and I run that
on a fairly regular basis.

I am using v 8.03 and Win XP, SP3.

Any ideas as to what I have missed or have not checked?

Do I need to import from LOTW twice, once using the Imported QSO sets the
confirmed flag and then import the same file again using the Imported QSO
sets the LOTW confirmed flag?

Thanks in advance.

Subject: [Dx4win] DX4WIN 8.02 SAME CALL Window Advice

I just got done processing over 1,000 cards for NK7U as his QSL manager.
This is the first batch of cards since upgrading to DX4WIN 8. There are
still a couple of things about the SAME CALL Window that are driving me
crazy and I wonder if anyone out there knows if there are fixes for these or
if they are in the works. Or, is there a way I can get this input to the
DX4WIN team to seriously consider?

Anyone out there who processes many cards for a large log, and NK7U's is
over 250,000 qso's, will run into the same problems.

The general problem is this. With a card in hand I enter the callsign into
the Callsign field and then hit enter. This brings up all the QSO's with
that station in the SAME CALL window so I can choose which one to confirm
and set for a label in order to reply. The two issues are this.

1. DX4WIN automatically loads the OLDEST QSO into the QSO window and
highlights the oldest QSO in the SAME CALL window and scrolls to the bottom
of the qso list in that window. If the card is from a station with which we
have had many QSO's, and all the QSO's can't be displayed in the SAME CALL
window, this means the QSO I need to select is off the top of the list and
I have to scroll the whole list up to the more recent QSO's. Is there a way
to have DX4WIN automatically load the NEWEST QSO and display the more recent
QSO's in the SAME CALL window.

2. When you start to move the cursor in the SAME CALL window a Pop Up Help
is displayed saying Double-click to go to QSO. Though it disappears
after a moment it often covers up the information, date and time, that I
need to identify the correct QSO. Though the help is probably helpful for an
occasional user it is a nuisance after you have seen it 25 times, not to
mention 1000 times. Is there a way to turn this on and off? [As a comparison
the DX Spots window does not have the same Pop Up Help. It is just common
usage that you double click on the spot to load it into the QSO window. Why
does the SAME CALL window have to have this help. It has been there for many
versions now, I had hoped this issue would have been worked on by now.]

Thanks everyone for your help.

Re: [Dx4win] CW and Esc

2009-12-25 Thread John Shaw
 Guy, Paul if your looking.

I hope you do find time to restore this functionality to the CW keyboard.
When you are the DX working pileups it is invaluable to be able to send
partial replies/calls and cancel the rest with precise timing, the way the
ESC key used to work allowed you to do this, ditting on the paddle would not
be accurate or convenient enough in these situations. The exiting of entry
mode and loosing the call already typed totally destroys any rhythm in pile
up operation.

Enough said on this one for now, thanks for listening.

See you all in the pileups 2010.

  3. I activate feature QSO-SPECIAL/CW/RTTY MESSAGES. Now I can press
 F1-
  F8
keys to send CW. It work OK.

  4. But if I need to stop sending CW (i Did mistake, doubling,
 whatever
reason) I press Esc. It should STOP my on air CW message. But
 instead
  it
cancels real time ENTRY and CW is going on. To stop CW message I
 need
  to
highlite CW Keyboard window and press Esc.

This feature works perfectly in DX4WIN 702. Just checked as I have
 it
  installed.

I have same MicroKeyer config so bug is in DX4WIN.

Re: [Dx4win] CW and Esc

2009-12-24 Thread John Shaw

The situation becomes more dysfunctional when using Winkey as the ESC
character is not sent to the Winkey chip so it belligerently continues to
complete the last message sent to it.

just stop the CW nothing else.

 Hi Nodir,

No one has commented on this. Sorry Nodir I don't have the answer, I'm
still a dinosaur living happily pre this change. Correct me if I am wrong
but I think it was changed at the request of the users, so please can
someone tell us how you instantly stop a CW message and remain in the real
time entry mode with the later versions of DX4WIN. Is there another key
 that
 functions like ESC used to?

Instead of stop sending CW program cancels Real-Time mode. Very
 inconvenient
 especialy in pile up enviroment.

 Any suggestions please?

Re: [Dx4win] CW and Esc

2009-12-24 Thread John Shaw

Thank you Erkki,

It sounds like upgrading to 8.03 may be the solution.

Nodir did not say which version he was using and I tested it in 8.02 so
maybe this has been addressed in the latest version I will now download that
and check it out as this would be a very important function for me to know
is working correctly before upgrading.

I am using 8.03 and Microkeyer also, but can't reproduce this. The ESC works
just like in earlier versions and cancels the rest of the canned message.
Doesn't affect the real-time mode either.

Maybe it is OS related? Here using XP.

Hi,

It doesn't work in 8.03 and 8.02

I have XP.

Let me explain in more details.

1. When I need to operate I press F9. It brings me to Real-Time mode on QSO
entry window. I have call sign area blank.

2. To operate CW I need to click on CW MESSAGES area on Memories but it is
not convinient and DX4WIN allows to use CW memos from being on QSO ENTRY
window.

3. I activate feature QSO-SPECIAL/CW/RTTY MESSAGES. Now I can press F1-F8
