The answer is strange. You need to go to MIDI > Quantization
settings. In the Quantization Settings dialog, click on "More
Settings", and then check the option "Allow Dotted Rests in Compound
Meters".

One hyphen bug is fixed in 2007c: hyphens at the end of a system are
no longer too near to the last syllable of the system. But the

fonts: all the music notation fonts + Zapf Dingbats, Wingdings, etc.
Open it in TextEdit and delete any font that looks like it's a normal
text font (such as Times).

This occurs in older scores. I think it has been abandoned in modern
editions: it is certainly not considered necessary and may, as you
say, be confusing.
