However, when I try to open them in either Frame 7 or Frame 10, I get the following error message: Cannot lock this file for your use. Your changes to it may conflict with the work of other users. File file path name. When I click Continue the file opens, but I cannot edit it or use the Save As button, since it is not available. I tried changing permissions on all the files, which appeared to be successful since they no longer indicate that they are read-only and the security settings have grey checkmarks indicating I have write permissions. After changing permissions, the error message no longer comes up, but I still can't edit the files and do not have access to the Save As command. But clearly, some setting in the old Frame file is prohibiting me from editing the file. I can print a PDF file, and then use Acrobat to save it into a Word file, but this is a very roundabout way to get these files into Frame 10. The Adobe forum had an entry on this issue, but the only response didn't help much: http://forums.adobe.com/message/4298416. Any suggestions on how to unlock them so I can use them in Frame 10? BTW, is there a search function on the framers list to seek out topic discussions that might be relevant? I only see the archive, which lists items in chronological order. RE: Change workflow to use FM and RH together?
Easy as pie - use conditional text in your FM docs for the US/UK parts - use RH to import your FM content for help builds or get TCS to link your FM source to a RH project. Continue to use FM for making good-looking PDFs. Lots of resources for doing this on the Adobe Forums TCS blog pages and on the TCS Google Group mailing list and to a lesser extent the HATT mailing list. From: framers-boun...@lists.frameusers.com [mailto:framers-boun...@lists.frameusers.com] On Behalf Of Terri Schultz Sent: August-08-13 4:29 PM To: framers@lists.frameusers.com Subject: Change workflow to use FM and RH together? Background: My department uses FrameMaker 11, unstructured, and RoboHelp 10. We do user's manuals in FrameMaker (one version for the US and one version for the UK) as separate books; minimal use of variables and/or conditional text. These docs are made available to customers as PDFs. I've used FM for 15+ years and consider myself an average FM user, not a power user. I used to use variables at a previous job, but my current job/co-workers don't use variables/conditional text. We do help files in RoboHelp, one help project for the US and one help project for the UK. There are many smaller/ancillary documents done in FM, InDesign, and or Word. These docs are made available to customers as PDFs. I consider myself a beginner/basic RoboHelp user. I use RoboHelp, but it is mostly editing content and applying pre-existing styles, etc. The powers-that-be don't see that the information is the same (or mostly the same) between the help and the docs (I am trying to convince them that this is the way it is). One issue that is *always* raised is that the docs have pictures/screenshots/images and the help doesn't. There are also discussions about using MindTouch to deliver information to customers; I don't know if that means that we would stop using FM and RH. Questions: 1. I know that we could (possibly) have one set of FM files that could be used to provide a US document and a UK document. I don't know *where* to start to make this happen. I don't have any authority to spend money and there is no budget to pay for consulting. I am looking for free advice/suggestions where to find out how to do this. 2. I believe we could either use our FM files to create help, or use our help files to create docs.As with #1, I want to know where to learn how to do this. I'm not looking for theory/big picture ideas. I need some nuts-and-bolts, how-to advice. At the very least, I want to show that we could gain some efficiency if we stop maintaining one set of FM source files for the US and another set for the UK. I hope this makes sense. RE: Change workflow to use FM and RH together?
Remember - Linking only works if you've got the Technical Communications Suite (TCS); otherwise Importing is your only option of getting FM content into RH. From: framers-boun...@lists.frameusers.com [mailto:framers-boun...@lists.frameusers.com] On Behalf Of Anjaneai S Sent: August-08-13 7:31 PM To: Terri Schultz Cc: framers@lists.frameusers.com Subject: Re: Change workflow to use FM and RH together? Hi Terri, Here is an idea/steps how you can achieve this-- Firstly, if there is a scope for content within Framemaker to be updated at various stages, go for Link option for bringing in book/documents from Framemaker (for Both UK US English) to RoboHelp. (File-- Link-- Framemaker documents) 1# One way is after linking your documents and converting all your FrameMaker documents into topics within Robohelp. Create 2 Conditional Built tag an apply them on US and UK English separately from Project manager and while generating your output, Select the CBT for which you want to generate the help. Alternately, you can apply Conditional Text to your English US/UK Content within Framemaker and directly publish it from there (File -- Publish). You might require to create two different TOC for English US/UK content 2# Yes, you can create Help using FM Files, that is a standard workflow. But the opposite is not a feasible solution. I did not understand when you say -- One issue that is *always* raised is that the docs have pictures/screenshots/images and the help doesn't. The Help file can also have graphics. As you have been working on Fm for quite some time, I'll share some steps to implement this from Rh End:-- 1) Create (or Open Existing) Robohelp project 2) Go to File-- Link--FrameMaker document and browse- your FM (US) Book and select open. (Repeat the same for English UK book) 3) This would Link your Book under Project Manager 4) Make a right click to Book and Select Generate (You should repeat this step whenever there is any modification at Framemaker's end 5) Now create and apply the CBT (UK and US) to your Topics within Project Manager (Drag and Drop them over any topic to apply it) 6) Generate your Help, say Webhelp, under Webhelp properties, Exclude the UK CBT from output. I hope I have not confused you further. :) Thanks, Anjaneai On Fri, Aug 9, 2013 at 1:58 AM, Terri Schultz tjs_bad...@hotmail.commailto:tjs_bad...@hotmail.com wrote: Background: My department uses FrameMaker 11, unstructured, and RoboHelp 10. RE: Choosing a Help Format
Sorry, forgot to do the Reply All thing. Yes, we're producing it via RH - it's not slow at all since it's installed on each workstation. You can get a free license to redistribute the AIR framework installer too if the workstation hasn't already got AIR installed. We bundle the app, the help (a .air file) and the AIR installer all together. Our app unpackages it all installs it. -Original Message- From: framers-boun...@lists.frameusers.com [mailto:framers-boun...@lists.frameusers.com] On Behalf Of Fei Min Lorente Sent: November-21-13 2:11 PM To: framers@lists.frameusers.com Subject: RE: Choosing a Help Format We're using C# in Visual Studio. Nadine I've got documentation in structured FrameMaker 10 and Mif2Go. I've produced Eclipse Help routinely in the past, but for the first time, we're creating a user interface in Visual Studio. We want to integrate the Help so that a button or menu item in the UI will open a Help window, complete with a table of contents and search facility. An index would be nice, and context-sensitive links to the documentation would be nice, but are lower priority. The software is intended for Windows operating systems only, and it's supposed to be a standalone installation-no internet or network required. We are considering Microsoft HTML Help, but have a few concerns because it seems somewhat dated and lacking in active development on Microsoft's part. We are also considering standalone Eclipse Help because it's being maintained and we can leverage our previous experience, but we are somewhat daunted by its size and the fact that we couldn't find anyone using it when they aren't producing an Eclipse-based product. WebHelp requires us to buy RoboHelp, which isn't out of the question, but I'm not sure we can justify the cost because we don't need it to run cross-platform nor from a server, and our developer is a bit concerned about the uncompiled set of output files being too easy for customers to mess with. Could anyone suggest any other Help formats we should look at? Can anyone endorse a Help format or tell us which ones we should avoid? RE: Frame ate my Acrobat!
The standalone version of FM always ships with a headless version of Distiller that you have to extremely careful when installing if you already have an existing full copy of Acrobat. The installer isn't very sensitive to detecting the existence of your full copy, so you have to go into the Custom installer settings and tell it to skip unpacking the headless version. -Original Message- From: framers-boun...@lists.frameusers.com [mailto:framers-boun...@lists.frameusers.com] On Behalf Of mkopen Sent: February-28-14 10:54 AM To: framers@lists.frameusers.com Subject: Frame ate my Acrobat! I just installed Frame 12 in all its icon-coloured glory, and now my Acrobat 955 has gone awol, Windows 7 didn't even understand the file extension any longer. How very rude! Hard to say how Acro 9 was extracted individually, since I installed it as part of CS4. Since CS4 hadn't heard of Frame's rather underhanded surgery, I had to 'uninstall' Acro 9 through CS4 first (it as still listed as installed), before I could reinstall it. The annoying thing is that, to get myself to v. 955, I have to run through the 19 or thereabout patches, since there's no service pack' equivalent. At least I don't have to go through the online activation rigmarole with CS4. ... Acrobat 9? Well may you ask! The last version before the GUI madness struck that left us keyboardists adrift, methinks, and I do like my IBM keyboard -- unless someone can point me to the keyboard shortcuts for all the functions packed into the menu bar on the right in v.11, and transform them from unknown unknowns into known unknowns? I could finally use one of my Acro 11 licenses! Mind you, in my opinion even a mouse-driven menu will trump a keyboard-driven one that is no longer available, any time of the day - a strange way to soften me up for Acro 11, though. Nice try, Frame 12! Oh well, tgif. Good weekend all! Mike ___ You are currently subscribed to framers as jeff.coatswo...@jonasclub.com. Send list messages to framers@lists.frameusers.com. RE: Generating web pages out of FM
Lots of discussion on the FM Adobe forums about creating responsive HTML5 other forms of output straight out of FM. But why wait? Just grab a non-production machine suck down the FM12 trial (it’s the same as the real one) play around with it for 30 days – remember to perform updates right away as there’s already FM12 patches out there. RE: FM 12 + RH 11
Unless you need PDF output or are using structured authoring, then there's no need to single source out of FM. As for tracking usage, if your help is on a web server (not a LAN server), you can check out the Adobe forums or RoboColum(n) (www.cmcandrew.com/robocolumn/http://www.cmcandrew.com/robocolumn/) as he's a RH Server user for his feedback. Have you checked out Arnis' post - http://forums.adobe.com/message/5802799#5802799 From: framers-boun...@lists.frameusers.com [mailto:framers-boun...@lists.frameusers.com] On Behalf Of Simon BUCH Sent: March-12-14 1:01 PM To: 'Framers' Subject: I am still hunting for HunSpell dictionaries in FrameMaker11... Dear Framers, I am on the hunt for learning how to integrate HunSpell dictionaries into FrameMaker 11, for languages such as Icelandic. According to the FrameMaker 11 Upgrade Guide: http://wwwimages.adobe.com/www.adobe.com/content/dam/Adobe/en/products/framemaker/pdf/FRAMEMAKER11_UPGRADE_GUIDE.PDF Hunspell dictionary is available, as is Configurable dictionary support. I guess these features mean that Adobe provides the dictionaries, and you can select whether you want to want to use the HunSpell, or the Proximity version dictionaries. I took a look at the InDesign help page: http://helpx.adobe.com/indesign/kb/add_cs_dictionaries.html and so I created my is_IS folder in: C:\Program Files\Common Files\Adobe\Linguistics\6.2\Providers\Plugins2\AdobeHunspellPlugin\Dictionaries\ and in which I copied my is_IS.aff and is_IS.dic files. I then added the stringis_IS/string text into the Spelling Service section of the Info.plist file. Is there anything I'm missing? or ... Does anyone know if it is possible to integrate new HunSpell dictionaries into FrameMaker11? // Simon BUCH -- M-AIS ___ You are currently subscribed to framers as arch...@mail-archive.com. I think your suspicion about the secure folder you're working in is the culprit - that sounds like an underlying server o/s using a slavish 8.3 file naming convention. I'm running FM10 (10.0.2.419). I'm trying to add the TOC to an existing book. I'm also getting strange results when I Save as: the filename gets truncated, that is, both the name before the period and the name after. For example, file_x.book might be saved as file.boo (that's right, without the final k). Very strange. I've tried to save the book file as a mif file but I get the same results. However, within the directory, I can rename *.boo to *.book and thus restore it as a book file. As I said, bizarre. I wonder whether it has anything to do with the privileges or security in the directory from which I'm opening (and saving) the files (it's a special secure directory, supposedly). Anyway, I've been working with FM for quite a few years and have never encountered anything like this. Thanks again! RE: RoboHelp links (from FM) appearing without a link destination
There’s also another similar bug out there that involves text insets. If your doc has xrefs, then a text inset, then more xrefs after it, the xrefs before the text inset will be turned into working hyperlinks, but the ones after the text inset will fail in much the same way as the “too long path” bug – i.e. they look like links, but don’t act like links. In the FM files, I verified all the links are fine - no broken cross-refs. When I generate a PDF from the FM book, all the cross-refs work. After updating the files in RH, the file Design view shows the links with the link text in blue and underlined, but there's no Hyperlink properties on the right-click menu, and HTML view shows that it's missing the href that specifies the link destination. There is a corresponding Japanese version for the documents and the same is happening there as well making me think it's more likely in FM than in RH. Somewhere there is either * a setting telling RH not to include the link destination for some links, or * a setting in FM telling it not to export the link destination for links to other FM files Any ideas where this might be? Also - any suggestions about what I could copy from another project to fix this? Help please - this was due yesterday ... RE: Trying out CHM generation in Frame12
Don't let the absence of Illustrator in TCS5 put you off - just keep your older TCS4 version around; that's what I've done with my TCS3 version of Photoshop ;) From: framers-boun...@lists.frameusers.com [mailto:framers-boun...@lists.frameusers.com] On Behalf Of Davis, David Sent: May-01-14 5:06 AM To: framers@lists.frameusers.com Subject: Trying out CHM generation in Frame12 Hello frameusers. This week I've been playing with the 30 day trial of FrameMaker 12. Most of my work at the moment has been generating HTML Help: my existing workflow has been with TechComm Suite 4, authoring in Frame 11, linking the books into RoboHelp 10 and generating CHMs from there. I've found that workflow a bit cumbersome, and struggled quite a bit to get my CHM files looking the same as my Frame source (although I mostly got there in the end, not least with some help from others on this list...) I'm trying to see whether I could just use Frame 12 instead, and forget about RoboHelp and TechComm Suite. (As I don't need the multiplicity of output formats the latter can produce.) The dialog boxes for configuring CHM output from Frame 12 look very familiar ( :) yes, they're straight out of RoboHelp) and I was quickly and easily able to achieve about 95% of what I'd been doing in TCS4. The only 'gotcha' I have encountered is this: Creating a CHM from Frame12 still ignores anything that was on a Master Page or Reference Page - so any 'boilerplate' graphics etc get ditched. In TCS4, I'd instead used RoboHelp Master Pages to append a boilerplate footer to each CHM topic. Am I right that I can't do this with Frame12 alone? Or is there some workaround I'm overlooking? (Sadly I don't think I can do without this feature, so if it can't be done in Frame12 alone I'll need to stick with TCS4... TCS5 is no good as it doesn't have Illustrator, as many of you have already noted..) Also, the Glossary feature in Frame12 seems to be broken - I ought to be able to include GlossaryTerm markers on words, and have the marker text displayed in the CHM as tooltips, pop-ups, etc. It doesn't appear to work though (other people have confirmed the same issue on the Adobe Forums). Has anyone here tried this successfully? RE: Anything I should know before upgrading to TCS5?
There's nothing unique to TCS5 compared to other TCS upgrades - the biggest gotcha is Acrobat - it just doesn't play well with multiple versions. If you've already got the newest Acrobat installed, tell TCS5 to skip loading it (and make sure that FM doesn't pooch it with its headless version too). Conversely, you can uninstall Acrobat and reinstall it as part of TCS5. Your choice... -Original Message- From: framers-boun...@lists.frameusers.com [mailto:framers-boun...@lists.frameusers.com] On Behalf Of Carol J. Last year I opted to subscribe to the Adobe Creative Cloud for $29.99/month promotional. That has now jumped to $49.99/month, but it provides access to every Adobe product I could want, including Photoshop and Illustrator. But those products were part of TCS4, so some people who already have them may simply choose not to upgrade them. I will not, however, relinquish my perpetual license to Framemaker until Adobe forces me to. I think my sole reason for wanting to upgrade this time is because I want to make sure that when Adobe decides to force the Framemaker subscription, I have the most current licensed version loaded because it will probably be the last upgrade I make. So I guess as long as Adobe dangles the threat of forcing a Framemaker subscription, I'll continue to shell out the bucks to maintain my perpetual license. That is a good marketing strategy, eh? So far only one response to my question about upgrade gotchas. So am I to assume that everyone who has upgraded to TCS5 and FM12 had an uneventful upgrade experience? RE: Trados and FM9 : Company requests files in MIF format?
From what I've read, most translation agencies will take your FM files and save them as MIF for you. I've been seeing occasional wonkiness (yes, I know... it's a technical term) since upgrading from FM10 to TCS5 (FM12), but I think I have narrowed at least one of them down to the point where the behavior is reproducible on demand, but I'll be darned if I know what is triggering it. Let's find out if it's just my installation/environment or if it affects others. I'm running TCS5 under Windows 7, 64-bit Enterprise. To try to eliminate character paragraph format catalog issues and template anomalies, once I was able to reproduce the behavior, I tried doing the same in a generic FM file, and am also seeing the behavior there, so that's what I'm going to walk through. I've included screenshots of what I see along the way. 1. Create a new file using the default Portrait blank paper. http://www.taxschool.illinois.edu/images/fm/fm12-1.png 2. Copy in a few paragraphs of generic text (I use www.lipsum.com). http://www.taxschool.illinois.edu/images/fm/fm12-2.png 3. Save the file. 4. Place your cursor in one of the paragraphs. 5. In the Paragraph Designer, change the Spread to 1% and hit Enter to Apply. http://www.taxschool.illinois.edu/images/fm/fm12-3.png 6. Save the file. 7. Press Ctrl+z to undo. 8. WHAMMO! http://www.taxschool.illinois.edu/images/fm/fm12-4.png On my system, the margins change completely, as if room for side heads was added. In my main working file it also put footnotes in the middle of pages. Also, it's not just any kind of change prior to a save and then undo that triggers the corruption. Simple text edits do not trigger it, however changes in the paragraph and character designers do. It's not just font attributes, but changing paragraph attributes and applying them, followed by a save and undo will also trigger the corruption. Changing the color of selected text via the tool palette, save, undo, will also trigger it. It appears to be the sequence of (1) anything involving changing *ATTRIBUTES* of text, (2) a save, and (3) an immediate undo, that triggers it. If I do the above steps without a save, the undo does not cause the corruption. It's as if reverting to a pre-save state makes FM go haywire. Now that I know what triggers the page going nuts, I now know what to avoid doing. I would experience this periodically since I'm a save-monkey, and wouldn't know what the heck was going on. Bizarre. Per Betty Azar, in American English, the present, simple past, and past tense of the verb to fit are all fit. Actually, it's not. The example from the OP used fit as a transitive verb and fitted was applied as the past participle. A pedagogue would rule this usage illegal but English, the bastard language of the world, grows this way. Usage of fit as a transitive verb has become widespread in my lifetime, although I'd have got the red crayon if I used it in a high school composition. Things get muddy when we try to use fit in the passive voice, which is the usage in question here. Intransitive verbs can't be used in passive voice so what do we do? We can try to borrow the past historic of the intransitive verb, which is fit or we can pursue the formation of a participle by regularising it. The members iof the Olympic team were fit for their new uniforms doesn't work. The members of the Olympic team were fitted for their new uniforms seems to. My call would be that the regularising rule applies here. If the OP MUST use passive voice (dubious tech writing practice at best) then make fitted the participle, rather than awkwardly stealing the past historic from the transitive verb. It fits better (sic: intransitive!) with other forward formations that are already in use. Helen ___ You are currently subscribed to framers as tp...@telecomsys.com. RE: What end product should I give them? or thinking of moving help application, but to what???
If you’re already happy with authoring in FM, I’d stick with it. Then I would get the Tech Comm Suite to produce your EPUB output and/or HTML5 responsive help that would work for tablets too ( look much better than an EPUB). Don’t get too suckered in by FM12’s claims that you can publish straight out of FM – the level of control over output is still being worked on. Try the trial version first on a non-production machine to test it out. As I mentioned some time ago, I am finally moving to a new computer. I tried to install on Windows 7, but the patch for Frame 7 wouldn't install, so I am working with virtual XP. I have Frame 7, and ePublisher pro version 9 build 5737 (maybe I have a patch for that too, as I thought I have version 9.2) As well as the PDF user guides which they want, I also create for them .chm files for one sort of application (which runs on C++) and html files in the format of WebWorks Help 5. These html files have a security message when you try to open them and only open in IE. The company has 2 applications which run on the person's computer, and all the others run in a web browser integrated with IBM Cognos. They are talking about soon making their applications available on a Tablet. I would like to request new versions of the software, but I would also like to make the ROI for this. i.e. I need to tell them that with the new software I can give them something better. I think that I would like to give ePub for when they use a tablet. For the html files, which application will be easy for me to move to, and what will the advantages be in the end result. Should I still give .chm? Or is something else used now? I am looking for something that is truly single sourcing (Today I just press a button.. once everything was set up). Any more insights etc will be helpful. -- Carrie Baker carrie...@gmail.commailto:carrie...@gmail.com ___ You are currently subscribed to framers as arch...@mail-archive.com. RE: Subject: RE: What end product should I give them? or thinking of moving help application, but to what???
TCS is a bundle of products that have special integrations to work together over the standalone versions of the software. The lineup keeps changing with each release, but TCS5 has FM12, RH11, Captivate 7, Presenter 9, Acrobat Pro XI – prior versions have included Photoshop and Illustrator. RE: Getting a handle on structured Frame
Sorry you fell down the rabbit-hole, but I'm pretty sure that you don't need to be running structured FM to create an ePUB. I created an unstructured book because I quasi-know-what-I'm-doing in the unstructured world. However, I think to publish this book as an ebook, it has to be structured. I have had a long running affair with trying to understand structured Frame and I have to say that the various pieces of documentation on adobe.com are next to useless and, unfortunately, much of the documentation by others (and Adobe) starts with Frame 6 or segues into Robohelp. While I understand theoretically what's going on with structured Frame, getting from here to there is no picnic. Anyway, I'm starting again with the new structured templates which came with Frame 12. I can see that I'll have to create or modify an EDD. Frame 12 installed 13 versions of structapps.fm on my system, either dated 12/5/2013 or the date I installed the program. There are 6 files which are 282KB. How do I choose which file to open? The structapps.fm file which I did open has 3 varieties of DocBook in it (SGML DocBook, XML DocBook, DocBook2.2.1). How do I choose which DocBook file to start with? Also, my project involves converting two novellas into one ebook. I believe I'm going to require one fm book with two nested books within. How do I add that structure to the DocBook file? I now have ~50 files which are components of my unstructured book file. How would you recommend that I take the contents of those 50 files and move them into the structured book? Thanks for your help. I'm sure there will be more questions. Yes, I could do that too, but then I’d have to run it in reverse if FM ran into trouble and it needed one of those “extra” files to recover/restore from – FM needs the smarts to be able to know where they’re located and retrieve from that location when needed, which it’s currently lacking. I could open, edit and create perfect pdf outputs of the FM book. · However, Robohelp refused to recognize the files with .backup extension and made a CHM containing only the files with proper .fm extension. · This resulted in an incomplete CHM, and a growing sense of helpless panic... Solution · I opened the corrupted files from within FM book and saved them by a different name. I checked in the Windows explored that the copy of the files were saved with the proper .fm extension. · I added the renamed files to the book and deleted the corrupted files from the book. That was all to it. I couldn't have solved this problem from within Framemaker itself as the book showed the corrupted files as normal FM files - I would open edit and save them without any indication of an error. So, when black magic starts to happen, please check the extensions of files in Windows explorer! Any idea why FM book could open a file with .backup extension? RE: Frame 9 Crashing - Can't Create PDFs
If you have the full Acrobat install, just make sure that you don't cream it with the headless version that ships with FM - use the Custom install settings to keep an eye on that. RE: Frame 9 Crashing - Can't Create PDFs
Are you talking about deactivating? It should be in the Help menu. From: framers-boun...@lists.frameusers.com [mailto:framers-boun...@lists.frameusers.com] On Behalf Of Craig, Alison Sent: October-22-14 1:20 PM To: Craig Ede; framers@lists.frameusers.com Subject: RE: Frame 9 Crashing - Can't Create PDFs Craig: I'm actually getting both now. Originally, I just got the Distiller fault - and for the few individual test files I've been able to successfully Print to Book, I still get it during the distilling process. However, now I'm getting an actual Frame crash pretty much every time. And it usually happens at the Chapter 1-Chapter 2 threshold. The one anomaly is that early yesterday when I reran a completed project as a test, it ran perfectly using the standard (for me) Print to Book/distill option. The Book isn't nearly as large or complex as the one that keeps failing, but it has 11 or 12 files and multiple conditions as well as the logo I had to incorporate. (I just tried this again and Frame crashed - so it now seems to be universal. Yesterdays' success must have been a fluke.) I have the sundorne SetPrint utility installed, so Adobe PDF is always selected as the printer. And I never have the Generate Tagged PDF option on, so that isn't the problem. I also always have the Rely on System fonts option deselected - I've checked in both places it can be set and it's fine. I guess it's time to uninstall/reinstall (after the IT tech vets my system). Do you know where I deselect the Frame option that essentially tells Adobe I'm uninstalling, so I can reinstall without any issues? If your version of Acrobat is later than what came with Frame 9, then I would install that later. When you say FM is crashing do you mean it is actually closing out the program and posting and error about a crash. (This would be different from the postscript completion error you cite.) If it is crashing, then I go with the reinstall. For the PDF error you cite, I'd make sure that PDF is you default printer and that the use system fonts option under the PDF printer options is disabled. RE: Problem with playing video clips in FM 12 document viewed in Adobe Reader 11
The standalone instance of FM has been known to not be very observant of the existence of the full Acrobat Pro version already installed - so if you don't turn that part off, the installer clobbers your full version with the headless one. Regarding round-tripping review PDFs - make sure that you are all patched up in FM - I think there were some issues with the first release of FM12. I'd be inclined to print to PDF as this exposes the PDF creation settings - maybe you've got something turned on/not turned on that's impacting the playback of your video. I don't have any videos in my FM content, so I can't really help you on that point. Have you had a look in the Acrobat forums? I presume, then, that the save to PDF actually triggers FM to open Acrobat and print the document using the Acrobat Distiller that is part of Acrobat, not FM. If this is correct, then things should have been rendered correctly. The computer we have all of this on also does not have a separate version of Adobe Reader. However, the video clips still do not play. In fact, the icons representing the videos that are referenced in the FM document aren't even active. I've also tried copying the videos into the FM document when I import them. The same thing happens: the icons representing the videos are flat graphics, mouse click does nothing. You may want to post this question to the framemaker-dita Yahoo group for additional info. 1) There are no DITA publishing scripts in FM. To generate a PDF you save the map to a book file (with FM chapter files), then save the book to a PDF. The formatting of the generated FM files is controlled by the structure application(s). Customizing the structure applications is far more complex than can be explained in an email, but that's where you'll need to look. Note that there is no difference between DITA authored in Oxygen or FM .. if it's valid DITA, it's just DITA. Some people think that DITA in FM isn't pure DITA .. it should be, and if it's not, it's not DITA. note type=vendor-commentDITA-FMx provides a much easier path to publishing and customizing than you'll get with default FM, and can be fully automated with additional tools./note 2) It depends on what you're trying to do. RE: The font that wouldn't...
When you created the PDF, did you tell it to embed the fonts? From: framers-boun...@lists.frameusers.com [mailto:framers-boun...@lists.frameusers.com] On Behalf Of Thomas Scalise Sent: December-30-14 10:38 AM To: framers@lists.frameusers.com Subject: The font that wouldn't... Esteemed colleagues, I am using FrameMaker 11.0.2.384 on Windows 7 Professional and using Adobe Acrobat Professional XI 11.0.6 to create PDFs. I am implementing a new book design that uses Helvetica fonts. I was given a group of fonts to install, which I installed In Windows. Included in those fonts a font called Helvetica Condensed. Some, but not all, of the installed fonts appear in the Fonts folder in Windows on the C: drive. Each of those fonts is preceded by the letter A. Helvetic Condensed is not one of them. I don't know why. I see this font and a number of other Helvetica fonts in FrameMaker when I select Format/Font. When I select this Helvetica Condensed for a Head1 in Frame the heading appears in the selected font. When I make a PDF of the book, all the Head1 fonts revert to Times New Roman (the default, I assume) in the Frame document. Can anyone give me some perspective on what is happening? I assume that the problem is occurring in Frame but I don't know why the font changes there since Helvetica Condensed is listed in Frame's fonts list. I assume that the PDF simply reproduces the font in Frame (I could be dead wrong about that). Why is the font changing in Frame when Frame allows me to select Helvetica Condensed and displays it in the text? I can change the font to Helvetica Neue Condensed and the problem goes away. However, the two fonts are not the same and the Helvetica Neue version is much more cramped in aspect. Any advice or insight would be much appreciated. Thanks in advance. Tom Thomas E. RE: Missing Mif2Go menu options
From the Mif2Go forums: Installing in Framehttp://mif2go.com/forum/starting-mif2go-framemaker-10.html#comment-90 If the Mif2Go items do not appear in the File menu, you have probably installed them in the wrong place. You need to put both m2rbook.dll and m2gframe.dll in your frame\fminit\Plugins directory, not to be confused with frame\plugins, which is for internal Frame use. If you do that, the menu items should appear the next time you start Frame. HTH! Thank you everyone for that. I didn't mention that I was using the Mif2Go plugin with FM10 as I was just going to install it from scratch. I now find that I'm missing some menu items - most importantly everything regarding Mif2Go. I installed from m2g_full_55.zip from the website, and followed the instructions to the letter. I also copied over my original copy of maker.ini and plugins, which included some CudSpan tools. I also had to unblock those files that were copied over - thanks Microsoft! RE: FM 12 and Acrobat on same machine
When FM is installed standalone, a headless PDF Creator version is installed to be able to generate PDFs out of FM. This can sometimes clobber existing installs of Acrobat. Adding it after the fact should replace the headless version, but if it fails, then uninstalling everything, installing Acrobat first and then installing FM next (mindful of the setting to stop the PDF Creator from installing) should get you up and running. WAS: FM 12 and Acrobat on same machine
Well, one of the main things I’m looking for in going from FM11 to FM12 is the fix for the fatal crashes that I get from using the scroll wheel on my mouse in conjunction with the xrefs panel. That’s #1 for me – I usually blow up once a day with that one. The second feature that I’m looking forward to is the “remember where everything was left” feature that allows you to exit out of FM and then pick up right where you left off when you start it back up again – I usually have 4 or 5 docs open at one time remembering where I left off from the prior week gets really challenging. From: Ken Poshedly [mailto:poshe...@bellsouth.net] Sent: February-20-15 9:40 AM To: Jeff Coatsworth Cc: framers@lists.frameusers.com Subject: Re: FM 12 and Acrobat on same machine Jeff is right-on, as far as I'm concerned. Definitely install Acrobat before installing FM (making sure to not install the FM PDF creation thingy on top of your existing Acrobat installation). My own question is if my company should bump up to FM 12 from FM 11 if our deliverables are only pdf files. That's it -- my company is just not concerned with html, etc. Plus, at $1,000 a pop, Adobe isn't too concerned with pricing itself out of reach of more potential customers. RE: FM Crashes after generating html

The FM files are contained on a server which is possibly somewhere else again. I am doing a 'Save book as htm' operation, I have edited the BookHtml and BookHeading mapping tables in the first file in the book as per the manual, and got it all set up so it looks right. It is set to generate separate files at each chapter and Heading1. The operation goes right through the process, takes about 3 minutes, generates 170 html files. Then FM crashes with a message that is essentially 'FM crashed'. I've looked for the log files in AppData/Roaming in my user profile, and there is nothing for today's date - several log files for various previous hangs and crashes, but nothing relating to dates I've created html files and crashed. The html files all work well, I've been deleting the FM lock files en masse rather than opening FM and reset lock for each file. Any suggestions appreciated on how to stop FM crashing at end of html process. RE: FM10 - Changing licensed machines
You should be able to download the FM10 installer from the Adobe Licensing site; but be sure to deactivate FM on your old machine before installing on the new machine. With separate copies of FM and Acrobat, you should tweak the FM install to skip the add-on PDF Creator (that’s the headless one that ships with FM), then load the full Acrobat.
