Depending on whether the drive is self powered, or USB powered, it could be
an issue of the drive not getting enough power to run.
Make sure that the drive is powered on properly, meaning all electrical
connections are made and any power buttons are switched to the on position.
It's not control+pause, it's Windows Key+pause, and you can do this
keystroke from any window.
