I just finished my portfolio for the Board for the Certification of Genealogists (BCG). During that process I found that my SW sources did not match the Evidence Explained formats exactly and instead of being able to copy and paste, I had to hand type them correctly. I am seriously thinking about going back to the Basic so that I can format the sources correctly but I have 745 sources with God only knows how many referenced to those sources. This would be a major change to the way Legacy works (no more need for a source clipboard), and so would probably be a big pill for Millennia to swallow. Not only a big pill to swallow for Millennia, but for the users who are used to it working the way it does. When you change it you would have to pop up a warning that it will also be changed everywhere else, and maybe even have to offer the user the opportunity to break that shared citation into separate citations (in case the user only wants to change it for one individual and not the others). I remember discussing this on the LUG in my 1st couple of years on the LUG (and I've been here 9 years). It's probably not going to happen. Belief that an assertion is true is not necessarily a prerequisite to documenting the assertion. For example, my wife is a LEE. Do you mean you would have physically copied the .fdb and not made this automatic selection to Dropbox? Where would you have saved your .fdb before copying to dropbox? I've now gone back to doing two backups - first to a removeable USB stick and second to the c:\Legacy\Data, changing the location each time to suit. Let's leave DropBox out of the equation for now. I don't think it is the problem and including it is just confusing the issue. I've gone to options : locations and made the Default location of family files : C:\Legacy\Data Default location for pictures, sound, docs etc are C:\Legacy\Pictures\ or sound etc. Location of temporary files is set at C:\Legacy\Temp This is fine. I then did a complete drive clean up and as I suspected would happen, the .fdb in the Windows\Temporary Internet Files etc. has been deleted and Legacy has asked which family file to open. I've opened the .fdb in the latest back up zip (which by the way, adds a [1] to the name each time I open from here, so at the moment my family file name ends in [1][1][1].fdb ) After doing all this, in the Family File Information (gen. info) screen under File Information, my Family File Path is still showing as C:\Users\Tom Erica\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows\Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5\9NMBQ1FW\ALL-family-current-OCT[1][1][1].fdb I don't know how your .fdb ended up here. Close Legacy and use Windows to copy ALL-family-current-OCT[1][1][1].fdb from C:\Users\Tom Erica\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows\Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5\9NMBQ1FW to C:\Legacy\Data and rename the file to whatever the real name should be (ALL-family.fdb or whatever). Now open Legacy and click File Open Family File and navigate to C:\Legacy\Data and open ALL-family.fdb. Once you do this, go to Options Customize... General (tab) and set Starting Family File to Always open this file and select C:\Legacy\Data\ALL-family.fdb in the File Selection dialog. Now save your option changes. I don't doubt you when you say I'm probably causing the problem, but am now at a loss - I don't think I've ever studied the general information screen so have not noticed the path to the temporary internet file before and can't see anywhere to change this - as far as that goes, why is it saving in a temp.internet file anyway, couldn't I theoretically be using Legacy offline? So where would the file go then? I can't begin to guess how it ended up there. If I have set my locations for the temp. files to C:\Legacy\Temp, shouldn't this working file be saving there? I don't understand why is it still saving to the C:\Users etc etc. Your Legacy temp file setting has nothing to do with where your .fdb is located. Don't worry about it, it is not the problem. When you open a .fdb Legacy will save any changes you make to your family data IMMEDIATELY and DIRECTLY to that .fdb. Apart from the incident with the disappearing notes, I would just like to know that I've set up all the options and locations correctly, so any advice would be appreciated. I don't know what you mean when you said earlier I've opened the .fdb in the latest back up zip. You should never OPEN a Legacy backup. You should use Legacy's File Restore Family File on a backup to recover an .fdb. -- Dennis Kowallek (LTools/Custom Programming) http://zippersoftware.com/ltools/index.htm http://groups.yahoo.com/group/ltools NOTE TO LUG USERS: Use plain text if you want me to read your post. Has anyone on the list ever seen where Legacy would embed invisible dates that show up when you do a SEARCH and REPLACE, but when you go to the record, the dates are simply not there. I'm sure it has something to do with the gedcom import I got from my cousin to combine with our master tree. I thought maybe it was the date modified or date imported, but that is not it. What I'm doing is to put in the search function to SEARCH and REPLACE (without actually doing the replace) for EVENT-DATES where the date contains 2010 anywhere in the field. I get quite a large number of hits such as 8 September 2010, but none of the records has those dates in the record anywhere I can physically see. Weird thing I would like to get to the bottom of. Thanks, if you can help. Jerry sent me his database off list. I looked at the example of a Search Replace that he sent. It found a date of 26 August 2010. There WAS a marriage event for that individual with that date. So the date is NOT invisible. I can see it in Legacy. So this is not a problem. Jerry just forgot to look at marriage events. As to Jerry's 2nd problem... Another facet to this problem (and why I started to do these searches) is that there are some dates that do show up, such as 27 August 2010, etc., but they are attached to EVENTS that are completely blank. So, I simply delete them, but I'm not sure how I can globally delete them because there is no event name. Everything is blank except the dates. He has a bunch of marriage events that are pointing at IDET=1. IDET=1 is a reserved record. There should be no rows in tblER that point to IDET=1. I looked at the GEDCOM that he imported his data from. It was FTM as I recall. I loaded this GEDCOM into Legacy 7.5 and went to one of the couples that had the bad marriage event (IDET=1). It imported fine and the marriage event was assigned IDET=59, which was the event type of Record Change. Jerry's file with the bad event did not have a event type for Record Change. The only way I could cause this to happen in Legacy is to go to View|Master Lists|Event Definition and combine the Record Change event type with the blank event type at the top of the list. The fact that Legacy lets you do this could be considered a bug and should be reported. I know what Jerry's next question will be ... but I'll wait until he asks it. :-) -- Dennis Kowallek (LTools) http://zippersoftware.com/ltools/index.htm http://groups.yahoo.com/group/ltools NOTE TO LUG USERS: Use plain text if you want me to read your post.
