Re: [Qgis-user] QGIS through conda on Linux

2024-02-26 Thread Randal Hale via QGIS-User
So at this point your environment should be active - type qgis in the
terminal and it should start.

I ignore the ICD warning. I think at some point I actually installed
something to make it go away but it doesn't stop qgis from working.

bash Miniforge3-$(uname)-$(uname -m).sh

was asked to deactivate the base environment and confirmed, but
somehow this did not happen, so:

$ conda config --set auto_activate_base false

$ conda create --name qgis_3.34

then I got warned that there is a newer version of conda (strange, why
isn't the new version installed right away?).

So done as told:

$ conda update -n base -c conda-forge conda

$ conda activate qgis_3.34

conda install qgis=3.34

stuff is installed, but again the warning to update

finally:
WARNING: No ICDs were found. Either,
- Install a conda package providing a OpenCL implementation (pocl,
oclgrind, intel-compute-runtime, beignet) or
- Make your system-wide implementation visible by installing
ocl-icd-system conda package.

That stuff is exactly what I was messing around with for the past week
to get the graphics card support in QGIS. Gnrrr...!

So, what to do now? I feel like panicking ... ;)

Normal Miniforge3 should be fine unless you know you want pypy.
Unless you know differently, try the "Miniforge3-Linux-x86_64" version.
Mamba is something hidden in the background, for you it will pretend
to be Conda. Conda is the original project, mamba is a faster,
compatible alternative.
Miniforge is something that comes with mamba "as conda" and
automatically uses the big "conda-forge" repository where lots of
software and libraries are available, packaged by the community.

You can use the command lines from
https://github.com/conda-forge/miniforge?tab=readme-ov-file#install

After installation I recommend: $ conda config --set
auto_activate_base false
Otherwise every terminal/shell session will run using a conda
environment instead of your standard system environment.

Once installed, you can use the "create" line from other previous
mail to install a QGIS environment. Then "conda activate qgis_3.34"
to activate it in a terminal session, "qgis" in that same terminal to
launch that QGIS and just close the terminal or enter "conda
deactivate" to deactivate it again.

Hi Bernd,

a pragmatic solution which I have grown to like is using conda
environments. Using mamba instead of the default conda via
https://github.com/conda-forge/miniforge to reduce annoyances and
then it is for example a simple "conda --create qgis_3.34
qgis=3.34" to get a nicely isolated QGIS 3.34 with pdal etc.

Just make sure to deactivate the base environment in your

Re: [Qgis-user] QGIS for safe organization use.

2023-05-23 Thread Randal Hale via QGIS-User

Greetings from the South of Canada.

So I'm a user and not a programmer by any stretch. The open source
license for QGIS covers the Software. Your data is your data and no one
else's unless you physically share it. It's not any less safe than
Arcpro. The data it builds is compatible with ESRI products (it can
build and edit ESRI file Based Geodatabases (which I'm guessing may be a
requirement)). It's my daily driverwell - my only driver for Desktop
GIS (I say that and PostGIS will make you feel things deep down in your
soul).

Anyway - I know that's a short answer but - Enjoy your QGIS'ing. Make
Data. Enjoy.

Now, a large portion of the information regarding the buildings and

At first, I was planning to work with ArcGIS Pro but I'm currently

Currently I'm working with this:

(you just have to install conda) and can edit FGDB.

Good luck,

[Qgis-user] QGIS 3.22 and 3.26 3D window is black

2022-06-28 Thread Randal Hale via Qgis-user
I think this is relating to a known Issue
(https://github.com/qgis/QGIS/issues/40324) - but I wanted to check to
see if anyone had  a thought.

I've got a Lenovo Laptop with an integrated Nvidia Quadro P2000. If you
do anything involving 3D the window is black in 3.22 and 3.26. With some
effort sometimes I can get it to "blue" but nothing displays. No 3D.
It's not a data issue - seems to be a video driver (I think).

I was wondering if anyone had experienced this and possibly had a fix.
My gut says I need to do something with the Nvidia Control Panel and
make some adjustments. I'm not 100% sure on what to change.

Anyway - any help is appreciated.

Once you start building a layout add your map frame. Make sure it's
selected and to the right you should see the item properties panel for
the frame. Scroll down and you'll see "grid" - that will let you add a
grid with a different crs and different style of grids and tics.
Disclaimer - I've overly simplified this explanation so spend some time

using the AppEEARS tool (NASA-USGS-LP DAAC) in geotiff format
(WGS 84; LatLong).
I wanted to convert the original data in 500 m spatial resolution
(0.0041667 arc deg; 2985 col x 1671 row for each scene) to 1 km
resolution (0.0083 arc deg; 1493 col x 836 row), so that i
am able to create Max.value (& Min. value) Composites (MVCs) for
consecutive 8-Day periods at 1 km resolution and then analyse
the data sets for matching with other 8-Day data series
available  at 1 km resolution from Modis Terra sites.
No downloaded data from AppEEARS is automatically 'imported" to
my Idrisi software (neither geotiff, nor netCDF; same is the
case with my GlobalMapper 8.0 software also; the same formats
from other sites get converted easily). The file format could be
read in my QGIS Desktop software (ver. 3.18.2; Zurich), and then
exported either in geotiff or other formats (incl. idrisi) in
whatever resolution, etc., i chose.
Although i am doing it file by file, this is a huge
back-breaking pre-processing task.
I was thinking if there is any tool in QGIS for automatic batch
processing of the data (say, 50 or 100 at one time, once i
select the "Raster datasets" and  "add" them in the given Box
under "Data Source Manager"). Presently, after adding the
datafiles, i have to select one raster image at a time and
"Export" it with the desired resolution/ file format, etc. It
helps if i am able to select all the files together, give one
output resolution value and one desired file format for all the
files to be processed). It also helps if the output data file
uses the same name as given for the input file, but allows the
user to provide a short prefix to each of them (say 4-6 letters,
either replacing the first 4-6 ones, or adding to the given names).
Once i am able to pre-process the data quickly, i am thinking of
trying my QGIS for cloud removal (by providing a zero, No Data
value to the cloud pixels) and then try it for getting MVCs for
consecutive 8-day periods.
Thanks for your patience, and kind regards,
amal kar.

(0.0041667 arc deg; 2985 col x 1671 row for each scene) to 1 km
resolution (0.0083 arc deg; 1493 col x 836 row), so that i am able
to create Max.value (& Min. value) Composites (MVCs) for consecutive
8-Day periods at 1 km resolution and then analyse the data sets for
matching with other 8-Day data series available  at 1 km resolution
from Modis Terra sites.
No downloaded data from AppEEARS is automatically 'imported" to my
Idrisi software (neither geotiff, nor netCDF; same is the case with my
GlobalMapper 8.0 software also; the same formats from other sites get
converted easily). The file format could be read in my QGIS Desktop
software (ver. 3.18.2; Zurich), and then exported either in geotiff or
other formats (incl. idrisi) in whatever  resolution, etc., i chose.
Although i am doing it file by file, this is a huge back-breaking
pre-processing task.
I was thinking if there is any tool in QGIS for automatic batch
processing of the data (say, 50 or 100 at one time, once i select the
"Raster datasets" and  "add" them in the given Box under "Data Source
Manager"). Presently, after adding the datafiles, i have to select one
raster image at a time and "Export" it with the desired resolution/
file format, etc. It helps if i am able to select all the files
together, give one output resolution value and one desired file format
for all the files to be processed). It also helps if the output data
file uses the same name as given for the input file, but allows the
user to provide a short prefix to each of them (say 4-6 letters,
either replacing the first 4-6 ones, or adding to the given names).
Once i am able to pre-process the data quickly, i am thinking of
trying my QGIS for cloud removal (by providing a zero, No Data value
to the cloud pixels) and then try it for getting MVCs for consecutive
8-day periods.

Thanks for your patience, and kind regards,
amal kar.

2021-08-30 Thread Randal Hale

Try this:

go to /etc/apt/sources.list and look for your qgis.list file

Open it using your favorite editing program and add  [arch=amd64] (and
this is mine for hirsuite):

deb [arch=amd64] https://qgis.org/ubuntu hirsute main

See if that works for you.

Re: [Qgis-user] Identify Results customization?

2021-05-22 Thread Randal Hale
On the attribute window you can organize data and turn off fields - but
they still appear using the identify window. Try this:

 * Right click on your layer
 * Go to properties
 * Go to Forms
 * Set the widget type for the field you want to hide to "hidden" and
it won't show up with identify results.but it does still show up
in the attribute windowHeh. (I wasn't expecting that but
   I've learned something).

So I'm guessing it a combination of hiding the field using organize
columns button and Setting with widget type to "hidden".

[Qgis-user] Fwd: Georeferencer Plugin Help - QGIS

2020-11-02 Thread Randal Hale

Good afternoon QGIS People

I received a question on RMSE errors in georeferencer and after talking
to Ethan about it I realized I have no clue what I'm talking about. How
would we go about calculating an RMSE for a rectified image in QGIS?

I've cc'd ethan on this so he can chime in also.

Thanks

Hi Randal,

I have a question about the usage and outputs of the Georeferencer
Plugin in QGIS, and thought, given your expertise, you might be able to
directly help, or point me in the right direction.

I am a Ph.D. candidate in Ecology and Evolution at Florida State
University applying spatial techniques to study the dynamics of benthic
cyanobacterial mats on coral reefs. This past summer, I photographically
tracked individual cyanobacterial mats in which I had placed plastic
stakes as ground control points for later image rectification. I am
trying to essentially create image stacks, so that I can parameterize a
generalized additive mixed effects model that accounts for the inherent
spatial autocorrelation and includes a parameter with occupation at the
previous time-point explicitly included to hopefully model the
population dynamics of this system.

Thus, a quantitative understanding of the error in my alignment is
absolutely critical to the downstream conclusions (especially for
informing my resampling to larger grid size to account for error in my
alignments).
I am using QGIS for obtaining all raw data from these photos (scaling,
rectification, classification, resampling), but I am stuck at the
rectification step. I am using the “Georeferencer” plugin to accomplish
my alignments, but I have received mixed advice on how to interpret the
residuals output on the GCP table in the Georeferencer window
(screenshot below). The documentation for this plugin seems to indicate
that the far right column (Residual) is actually a per GCP RMS error.

Can you tell me how to interpret these errors/how to obtain a total RMSE
error for the image alignment (i.e. not just per GCP error, but total
error for each image)? I have been told to sum all of the values from
the residuals column and take the square root of that raw summation. Is
this correct?

Many thanks in advance. I apologize for the lengthy email, but I wanted
to establish the motivations for this project so that you would have
more context for the goals of the alignment.

Any and all help here is greatly appreciated.

Best,

Re: [Qgis-user] Road Labels

2020-10-20 Thread Randal Hale
One thing you could do is take the roads you downloaded for Michigan and
clip them against the county boundary. You should be able to get the
county boundary from the Michican open data site or the census. If you
add both the roads and county boundary to your QGIS session I would

1. select your county

2. Open the processing toolbox

3. search for clip

4. Be sure to clip the roads with the selected county

5. Save out your new roads layer to a shapefile (or geopackage) and work
with the smaller dataset.

Yell if you have any problems - good luck!

Hello Helpful Members;

I am a fairly new user (about 3-4 months now).  I have been using the
online tutorials, the training manual and anything I can understand.

BACKGROUND

I am a parking planner so I create maps of my study area, which is
usually an entire city, in various US states.  For example, right now
I am working on Rockford, Michigan, USA.  I know it is a small area,
but it is one in which we have already done the study and I am trying
to recreate everything we did for them (my GIS person no longer works
with us, so I am learning).

WHAT I NEED TO DO

I need to be able to add a layer containing street names for my study
area.  This layer needs to have an attribute table I can manipulate to
get only the streets (labels) within my study area.  I do not want the
point bubbles (ex: Target, Leo's Coney Island, etc.) that point out
restaurants and places of interest that I seem unable to get rid of
when I use google roads (xyz:
https://mt1.google.com/vt/lyrs=h={x}={y}={z}

WHAT I HAVE TRIED

I am unable to manipulate data in open street maps.  I have tried to
download the roads vector file from the State of Michigan. However,
this file is so huge (as it contains every road in the state) it keeps
crashing every time I try to manipulate it.  I have been able to
select just the roads in the area I want using an expression, but it
crashes when I try to select one of the roads to remove it from the
study area (stragglers I do not want to show after using the select
area tool).  I have also tried to select all the records I do not need
in an effort to delete them in the hopes of making the file smaller.
Again, it crashes.

MY QUESTION

Can someone please give me a link to a tutorial that will show me
where and how to get just the road names for any US city (as I need
them).  Or provide me with directions to do what I need?  I have been
trying to figure this out for over 2 months now and just can’t seem to
find what I need.

As my computer constantly crashed using QGIS after the new Windows
updates, we have installed new hardware in hopes to keep it from crashing.

Dell Computer

Currently have 16 gig memory (increased from 8)

2 gig AMD Radian R5 Video card (newly installed)

Core I3 processor

Using QGIS 3.10.9 (3.14 won’t load)

Sorry for the long email.  Please let me know if you require more info.

from a software organization viewpoint to replicate code dealing with

I would start by testing in a wide open field.  Is the
problem with the GPS in the laptop or with the connection
with QGIS? If it’s the later, explain what you are doing and
what versions of QGIS using.  If you only get a position with

Daniel Green from Québec?

I would start by testing in a wide open field. Is the problem with
the GPS in the laptop or with the connection with QGIS?  If it’s
the later, explain what you are doing and what versions of QGIS
using.  If you only get a position with the wifi, maybe you don’t
have an actual GPS chip. Look at the computer specs.  Some
tablettes (iPods also) and rare phone only use wifi for
positioning and do not use an actual GPS chip.  Make sure you are
not in airplane mode with antenna’s turned off.

I too am boggled by this. EPSG:2274 is a Lambert Conformal Conic

Using the GRS80 ellipsoid is part of the definition of this CRS, so if

and that 2274prime CRS should throw an exception if you try to convert
to/from NAD83 geodetic.

It's actually unrelated to projection. You CAN'T change the ellipsoid
used by a projection, at least without creating your own custom
projection.

The ellipsoid settings in project properties are only utilised for
area/length calculations, not transformations.
So the next question would be - way back in a past life I worked with
mapping at Fossil/Nuclear Plants and some had custom grids - no
projection just a 0,0 and then everything was on a grid. In that case
would it be acceptable to do "none/planimetric" when working on a
project like that? No projection - just a grid.

I'd have to reload an older version - but it seems like before 3.10 (I'm
on linux and was trailing on proj versions) that when I loaded some 2274
data the ellipsoid was coming in wrong (not GRS80 and I can't remember
what it was pulling in). In the testing this weekend it's coming in
correctly (3.14) if I start out with a new profile etc etc - which
further fueled the "I'm doing this wrong" line of thought.

So I'd say the bug is qgis/proj allowing transforms to/from a
LCC-but-no-ellipsoid CRS. And maybe qgis allowing
2274-but-no-ellipsoid is a bug too.

That's a great question - somehow I became convinced this was right.
Mostly it resulted from a job I was doing for a forester - the area
calculations from ellipsoid were coming out larger than it should have
been. Planimetric put me close to what was "right". I started doubting
this was right a few weeks ago wrestling with the "ballpark transform"
error message.

Now I'm getting a
ballpark transformation message if I move data from 2274 to 4326 (for
instance I'm moving points to a GPX Format).BUT - if I set the
Ellipsoid to be GRS 1980 (which it is for that projection) - no warning.

Can you open a ticket on this and attach your data? It's quite
possible that the warning is correct, but it's also possible it's a
spurious warning and I can hide it in this circumstance.

I can!

Which now has me thinking MAYBE I should set the ellipsoid. EXCEPT
my area measurements always come out a bit larger than expected.

Which **IS** expected! :D An ellipsoidal area will almost always
result in a larger area vs a cartesian area calculation, because it's
calculating the area over a curved surface rather than a flat surface.
(same applies to length measurements).

Generally my advice is to use ellipsoidal area/length calculations,
unless the specific constraints and specifications of a particular
task or discipline dictate otherwise. If in doubt, I'd:

1. compare the two area calculation results. The identify tool
"derived attributes" section handily shows BOTH cartesian and
ellipsoidal areas/lengths, if you've setup your project to use an
ellipsoid. If the results are relatively similar (e.g. say within 0.1%
of each other), then ask yourself whether it makes any difference
practically which of them you use. Chances are the accuracy of your
input datasets will be a bigger factor here then the area calculation
method used, and you may be chasing false accuracy by reporting areas
to that many significant figures anyway! Or, in other cases, the
actual purpose of the calculations you're making aren't even required
to a degree of accuracy to warrant being affected by the choice!
(e.g. if you're calculating species density, then it's an inherent
estimate only and the practical outcome of choosing between
cartesian/ellipsoidal calculations is nill).
I'm really starting to wonder if this started back at 3 (in my head) and
I've continued down the wrong path since then. Maybe it was a bug or
something in the beginning and I never adjusted based on everything
getting fixed. Maybe. I really don't have a good answer.

2. if you've checked and the input datasets ARE sufficiently accurate
that the choice matters, then push the choice back to your customer.
Ask them which method is suitable for the results they're after. Get
the answer in writing and your method is justified!

3. keep in mind that even ellipsoidal measurements are an estimation.
The earth isn't an ellipsoid! Local variations in elevation are likely
to have a much more significant impact on large scale calculations vs
the cartesian/ellipsoidal choice.

Hope that helps!
Yes - it helps. I'm getting a lot of questions from people getting
"ballpark transform" messages which led to the last little bit of
testing, head scratching, and "Hey I can be completely wrong on what I'm
doing".

Re: [Qgis-user] shapefiles

2020-06-16 Thread Randal Hale
Yeah - that's a layer order issue. Just drag that line above your ortho
over in the layers panel. Select the layer and drag it up. You can move
stuff around pretty easily in that panel.

If you ever dump a shapefile out of some custom Forestry software it
could (like something to COGO boundaries or do cruises) it can become a
projection issue easily. BUT - you're on the right track!

Hi Jim,

That sounds a lot like a projection issue.

Are your layers completely misaligned, like not overlapping at all? Or
are they overlapping but with just a few (hundred) meters shift?

An easy trick is adding the world layer and see which of your layers
appears at the expected spot. You can do this by typing "world" in the
coordinate bar beneath the map.

Good luck!

2020-05-23 Thread Randal Hale
eet off. I imported
the data trying both EPSG 4326 and 4269.
I'm now convinced that the problem is due to (1) my Google Pixel 3 cellphone, (2) the app I'm
using ("Latitude Longitude" published by gps-coordinates), and especially (3) my
less-than-steady hands. I capture coordinates by standing at spot, waiting for the blue dot to
settle, and then touching the blue dot. Often I don't touch the screen at exactly the right place.
I tried another app ("GPS Coordinates" published by Financept) which is better in that
it allows me to zoom in, but I'm still not always getting it right.
I'm thinking now that I need specialized equipment. That is what I want to
ask you. Can you recommend some inexpensive device that will allow me to
simply press a button to record accurately the coordinates of the point where
I'm standing? Keep in mind that this is a community project with no funding.
I live on Social Security and a university pension, but I'm willing to pay
something in the range of $50 or a bit more. Do you know of anything at such a
modest price, or would I have to pay much more? Or perhaps you know of better
software for my Android Pixel 3 phone.
Thanks in advance for any advice you might offer.

This time it did not come up with the message suggesting the download

Need to know why it is doing the less accurate transformation and how

CAUTION: This mail comes from outside the University. Please consider

Greetings,

I received an email from two users with 3.12 asking about "Ballpark
Transformations" - the exact phrase was "Used a Ballpark
transformation from EPSG:4326 to EPSG: 2274".

I've been able to generate the message twice by:

  * changing the projection of a new project with no data from 4326 to
2274
  * adding data with an incorrect spatial extent that I believe was in
4326 and applied to a project in 2274 (I think - I currently don't
have access to that data to confirm)

I've found mention of it here:
https://qgis.org/api/classQgsCoordinateTransform.html#a16adb051fafc25058c0040a310f1606b
<https://qgis.org/api/classQgsCoordinateTransform.html#a16adb051fafc25058c0040a310f1606b>

The expanded message in QGIS is:

/*An alternative, ballpark-only transform was used when transforming
coordinates between *//*EPSG:4326 - WGS 84*//*and *//*EPSG:2274 -
NAD83 / Tennessee (ftUS)*//*. The results may not match those obtained
by using the preferred operation:*//**/

/*Possibly an incorrect choice of operation was made for
transformations between these reference systems. Check the Project
Properties and ensure that the selected transform operations are
applicable over the whole extent of the current project.*/

If I check the project properties there is no Datum Transformation
defined after all this happens.

I'm assuming that if a project has no data and one jumps datums by
changing the projection it's saying "Hey since there is no data this
transformation is a "ballpark" i.e. not exact". Is there a preferred
way to dealing with this after it happens?

   4326 and applied to a project in 2274 (I think - I currently don't
have access to that data to confirm)

I've found mention of it here:
https://qgis.org/api/classQgsCoordinateTransform.html#a16adb051fafc25058c0040a310f1606b

The expanded message in QGIS is:

/*An alternative, ballpark-only transform was used when transforming
coordinates between *//*EPSG:4326 - WGS 84*//*and *//*EPSG:2274 - NAD83
/ Tennessee (ftUS)*//*. The results may not match those obtained by
using the preferred operation:*//**/

/*Possibly an incorrect choice of operation was made for transformations
between these reference systems. Check the Project Properties and ensure
that the selected transform operations are applicable over the whole
extent of the current project.*/

If I check the project properties there is no Datum Transformation
defined after all this happens.

I'm assuming that if a project has no data and one jumps datums by
changing the projection it's saying "Hey since there is no data this
transformation is a "ballpark" i.e. not exact". Is there a preferred way
to dealing with this after it happens?

Re: [Qgis-user] question about live vs linked connections

2020-02-24 Thread Randal Hale

Good question.

So There is a plugin called offline editing. You can connect to a
postgis database - sync it to be offline - edit it and sync it back to
the original table. I've not used it in production for a bit but I did a
quick test against a local database and it worked fine. I'd give that a
test and see if that would work for you.

This may be a very naïve a question but asking it anyway.

Can one create a linked table in QGIS such that it links to a postgres
db table, but if remote it can still be opened, used and edited? Edits
would get saved back to the postgres db when not remote and likewise,
changes from the postgres db could be refreshed back to the linked
table when connected. When working with ODBC connected tables in
MapInfo one has this option (live or linked).

Should I report this as a bug? (I'm always nervous of reporting bugs without

It there a way around the problem? - I'm using gdal2tiles quite heavily at

[Qgis-user] QGIS Meeting Chattanooga TN October 25th 2019

2019-09-13 Thread Randal Hale
Forgive me if this is a duplicate in your inbox this morning. I've been
making regular announcements on QGIS-us but I've wondering if I might
reach a few that aren't on that email list.

Social: October 24th 2019 - The Tap House
    Meeting: October 25th 2019 - Chattanooga Tennessee
    Website: https://wiki.osgeo.org/wiki/20191000-QGIS-US

We're sitting at 8 speakers for a QGIS meeting in Chattanooga TN on
October 25th 2019. We've got talks ranging from 911 implementations to
QGIS Product announcements to Plugin development. You can see the full
list of people at the OSGEO Wiki above. I've still one more to add later
today.

Total Cost for the meeting is $25 dollars. If you can't afford the $25
there is a scholarship available (Email me this Code: QGIS is awesome
and I will add something to the meeting just by being there). If you
want there are sponsorship available. Sponsorships will help with food,
the social, and getting people here.

We have a few slots left for speakers. Right now we've people coming
from all points in the US (and Canada). I'd like to drag more into the
meeting.

Look forward to seeing you there if you can make it.

[Qgis-user] Meeting in October 2019 in the Southeast US

2019-05-24 Thread Randal Hale
Good Morning/Afternoon QGIS Listserve - and sorry for the
duplication/spam as I've sent this out on several other listserves and
many of you are way outside of the SE United States.

I'm hopefully going to hold a QGIS centric meeting in the Southeastern
US in October 2019. Right now I'm trying to piece together an interested
group of people and hold this around the Chattanooga TN area (which
could be Huntsville, Chattanooga, Knoxville, Asheville, etc). It will
probably be a 1 day meeting but depending on interest we could go more.
I've held meetings (with the help of a lot of great people) in the past
[1] centered around FOSS4G software and they've had quite a turnout with
topics ranging from SAGA, LIDAR, QGIS, and PostGIS.

There is a OSGEO Listserv covering the SE US [2] and I'm preparing to
pepper the list with information and put up a central location for
information. I'm open to suggestions for a location. I'm hoping to nail
down a date and location shortly so if you are so inclined join the
listserve below and we can discuss. I'm open to sponsors and whatever
else we might need. Usually the biggest expense for these meetings is
food and snacks. Depending on interest we may need more than that.

Anyway - hopefully those of us in the Southeast US can get together and
talk about QGIS.

You can also go the GRASS Route for LAS files. You get GRASS with an

GRASS is a bit of a learning curve but with patience you can get up to

Re: [Qgis-user] PIN # LookUp Help?

2019-02-19 Thread Randal Hale
I did a quick glance at their website - I assume you've downloaded the
data.

If you have the data downloaded and open in QGIS you can also use the
Select Features By Value Tool (its on the attributes toolbar and you can
also tap F3 on your keyboard) and enter the pin number in the
appropriate field and it should autocomplete. From there you can zoom,
flash, etc the parcel. I think someone also mentioned the "locate tool"
in the bottom left corner of QGIS.

As far as using metasearch - that depends on whether they've published a
catalog service - but having the data should work just fine.

Good Luck!

Subject: [Qgis-user] QGIS 3.4.3 becoming unusable for me on Windows 10

Ever since release 3.4.1 QGIS has been a disaster for me, running on Windows
10.
After I upgraded to 3.4.2 I still had problems with everything running very
slowly. (See my post below -
QGIS 3.4.2 still very slow to work in Windows 10 by David Addy)

Now on 3.4.3 the same issues seem to be continuing, with the odd crash added
in for good measure.
Opening QGIS on Windows 10 always takes over half a minute before anything
happens apart from the outline box of the QGIS window full of blank space.
Once a project finally loads up any random operation gets the "QGIS not
responding" message.
I can scan a map without any problem, moving it around works fine, as does
zooming in and out. But if I want to amend the contents of the attribute
table or change a style in the Layer Properties I get “QGIS is not
responding”. After a long delay it may respond correctly.
This can result in further issues because I may try pressing buttons to get
a response. After long frustration it might decide to crash.
I use the stand -alone version of 64 bit Windows package, which loads with
QT 5.11.2.
I run a 16 gb computer with Intel i7 processor. It seems to make no
difference whether I have my Kaspersky Security Suite turned on or off.
Frustratingly, some other users apparently experience no problems with
Windows on QGIS.
Ubuntu users are ecstatic – they work lovely.
If you are on Windows 10 and are still having these sort of issues on QGIS
3.4.3 it would be very helpful if you could add a note to this thread so we
can gauge the numbers involved. Useful also if you can note whether you use
the standalone package, 64 or 32 bit, and the QT package installed.
Thanks very much.

Sorry to complain, but I just cannot bear to run any work at the moment.

10, 64bit and installed from the standalone installer. I use shape file

years. When I measure a 40 acre parcel of land with the area measurement

[Qgis-user] Offline editing in 3.2

2018-10-18 Thread Randal Hale
I'm attempting to take a project out in the field and use the offline
editing plugin. I activated it and pull the data offline but I can't
edit it. On Linux it appears I don't have write access to the spatialite
file and on windows I have write access to the spatialite file but I'm
guessing this is somewhere in the tables.

I tested 3.2 and master and both had the same result. 2.18 will let me
take it offline and edit and sync back. Did I stumble into some change
coming for 3.4 or should I file a ticket? I searched and didn't see
anything mentioned tickets filed (but I may have missed one).

Thanks,

Randy

Re: [Qgis-user] QGIS Functionality and Training

2018-10-03 Thread Randal Hale
I do training - just not on this specifically. I'd have to sit and think
about it how to work this in. I'll answer in line and maybe someone has
a better answer (possibly Kurt Menke)

1. I would think GRASS would be more appropriate than QGIS. A lot of the
tools in grass are exposed in QGIS - so maybe we could do basin
delineation using those tools but within QGIS.

2. I'm not sure  - but we can figure it out. QGIS can export to about
anything - so it's possible. Shapefiles make the world go around - that
and CSV text files.

3. Yes.

4. Without looking I believe so. Possibly would have to be one in GRASS
or with one of the exposed tools from GRASS in QGIS.

5. 6. 7. Yes.

All of this is off the top of my head - I'd have to research this more
to give a better answer.

Re: [Qgis-user] looking for mapping program

2018-08-29 Thread Randal Hale
I do some consulting work for another forestry company - maybe I can add
more info to the good info you've gotten.

 * I doubt that QGIS will be able to pull in your Xmap projects. If you
can export your data as txt files you can pull that info into QGIS.
 * The group I work with was using DNR GPS to push and pull data from
their GPS Units. With the newer Garmin units you can copy a GPX file
to the unit (like a USB drive). I replaced DNR GPS with QGIS (we
just create a GPX file and copy it).
 * We generate all the Plots and digitize the stand information using
QGIS - when I started working with them, they were a arcivew shop.
QGIS would do everything and more than Arcview. Plus it saved them
licensing costs over the long haul.
 * I ended up adding PostGIS into the mix - but that's a longer story
   for another time.

It's doable - it will be a learning curve (and some head scratching) but
you'll be pretty happy with QGIS I think.

[Qgis-user] Default Value for a Widget

2018-08-27 Thread Randal Hale
I have an address point database. There are some string calculations
that have to happen after a point has been added. I've hit a bit of a
stuck spot with this one.

I have three fields: fielda. fieldb, and fieldc

When the user adds the information for those three fields I have one
field that needs to add the three strings together. In the fieldtotal
column I set up an expression (in the attributes form) for the default
value that is: "fielda" || ' ' || "fieldb" || ' ' || "fieldc" and place
that in default value.

example: "123", "MAIN", "456" and I want "123 MAIN 456"

It won't calculate at the end - it's as if I'm forgetting to set
something. If I check the "Apply default value on update" checkbox it
will update if I edit the point - just not on initial point creation.

I'm pretty sure I'm missing something.

Re: [Qgis-user] QGIS and ESRI's ArcMAp

2018-06-29 Thread Randal Hale

Good Morning (Greetings from TN)

It's a really mixed bag as far as capabilities. I say that - I haven't
used ArcGIS now for a bit except at ones client's office. The big thing
you'll notice is it's a different workflow (not necessarily one being
more right over another). So if you try some workflow you're used to in
ArcGIS you might get a bit frustrated - but I get frustrated now with
ArcGIS because of my workflows in QGIS.

 * In general all the extensions you're used to are already included.
So things like the spatial analyst toolset is there already.
 * Probably the 3D environment in Pro is better (but I've never opened
pro) - but QGIS is gaining momentum.
 * I find the community here is more vibrant - you can send emails on
Saturday at noon to the listserve and get an answer.

 * I think QGIS is more flexible - but probably 8 years ago I would
have argued ArcGIS was. I enjoy this software more now.
 * I think the cartography tools are equal and possibly better than
   ArcGIS.
 * Everyone here is more receptive to suggestions. You can file a bug
report and talk to a person (and not get a error).

Give it a shot and start playing with it. Do a small project. Style it
all up - make a PDF. Hopefully you'll like it -  possibly love it.

(look here -> this might help although it refers to an older version of
QGIS - it's still a great read -
https://gisunchained.wordpress.com/2016/01/28/qgis-features-i-long-for-while-using-arcgis/

Hi, maybe I misunderstood your needs but I don't see the issue.

The authcfg is just an ID that the QGIS authentication manager uses to
retrieve the credentials from the QGIS user authentication DB.

If I get your point, what I suggest you is that you create your
project (the one that needs to be distributed) and configure your
layers with a custom authcfg (you can use up to 7 digits or letters to
name it) and just tell the users to create an entry in their
authentication DB (using the authentication manager in their QGIS
instance) with same authcfg that you have chosen and  with their
credentials.

Hope that helps!

[Qgis-user] FOSS4G-Northo America 2018

2017-12-15 Thread Randal Hale
Sorry if this is a double (or triple) post. If you are local to North
America (or maybe not and you've always wanted to see St Louis) -
FOSS4G-NA 2018 is starting up.

Website: https://2018.foss4g-na.org/

Location:

Hilton St. Louis at the Ballpark
1 South Broadway
St. Louis, MO 63102

Registration is open for FOSS4GNA 2018 and the call for papers is open
also. Given the momentum that QGIS.us is starting to experience
hopefully we can all get together at some point during the conference
and make plans.

Thanks

Randy

Re: [Qgis-user] LiDAR Data in QGIS

2017-12-11 Thread Randal Hale
I'm dealing with a different issue here in Tennessee - We have the original
files except they are locked in zlas (ESRI Proprietary Format) BUT - I can get
it out of zlas so I can have fun with the LAS files.

Good news is - LAS was a thing in 2003
(https://www.asprs.org/committee-general/laser-las-file-format-exchange-activities.html)
so you might be able to
get those OR at least a CSV file.

You might have to go back to the vendor. They probably have them but might
take some work to pry the files out of them. 2003 might be a life time ago for
many.

Good luck though! and take a look at GRASS and PDAL. I feed the LIDAR data
into GRASS and pull the returns out or reprocess it. I'm not that great at
doing it but learning.

Re: [Qgis-user] LiDAR Data in QGIS

2017-12-11 Thread Randal Hale
I've only been watching this thread when I remember - so My apologies.

If I go back to the original thread - if these are in ADF I believe that's
ESRI's GRID Format. Which means they are what they are and you can't do much
with them. They have only the last return (or if I remember correctly returns
classed 2,8, etc).

If you have zlas, las, or laz - I would suggest GRASS for processing: https://
grasswiki.osgeo.org/wiki/LIDAR

If you don't have any of the las/laz formats - you might want to do some
research and see if they were delivered with the LIDAR dataset you have or if
they weren't request them. They may be sitting somewhere on a shelf/forgotten
folder on a server. You can do a lot more with the original LIDAR files like
pull tree heights or possibly rebuild the surface (be it dsm/dtm/dem etc).

This is how it works on Linux (granted I haven't tried it lately so your

[Qgis-user] Question on Area in QGIS 2.18.13

2017-09-20 Thread Randal Hale
I have a question - this didn't seem to be an issue until 2.18.12 QGIS.
I'm currently on 2.18.13 Ubuntu 17.04. I could be missing something.

I have a forestry client and they were preparing to do some aerial
spraying. So I outlined the area to be sprayed and generated acres.
Generally I set my project properties to feet (for units) and square
feet (for area) and the ellipsoid set to none/planimetric. My data is
stored in WGS84 in postgis. I pulled it out into a shapefile and
eventually stored it in geopackage while trying to track down my issue.

Dropbox link to the data:
https://www.dropbox.com/sh/8w1spcxu5by7z70/AACilL5kOeOC7tzX4WCEkOdka?dl=0

I set the CRS to EPSG:2274 - the data is in wgs84.

If I run acres  with project properties set to feet, square feet, and
none/planimetric and using the Field Calculator I get: 372.82 acres.
This is wrong.

If I run acres with project properties set to feet, square feet, and
wgs84 as the ellipsoid I get 307.41 acres which appears to be right.

If I run acres using the virtual layer abilities: /select
sum(st_area(st_transform(geometry,2274))/43560) from spray/ I get 306.04
acres which may be right.

I didn't notice this until 2.18.12 - I updated to 2.18.13 and it is
still acting "odd" - I didn't notice in 2.18.11 but I'm not sure if I
ran any area calculations in 2.18.11. I have also noticed that if I
switch from wgs84 (feet, square feet, none for ellipsoid in the project
properties) and then switch to EPSG:2274 the ellipsoid changes to
grs1980(iugg 1980).. which having the ellipsoid at GRS80 may have
been covering for my area calculations and making them "about right".

Anyway thoughts? Ideas? Am I doing something wrong?

Hey Zachary - you should be able to right click that text file in your
Layers Panel  and select "Save As" - save it as a shapefile. You should
then be able to edit that file and delete the points.

[Qgis-user] Snapping: Move Features vs Node Tool

2017-05-30 Thread Randal Hale
A question.

In an attempt to help a client I'm doing some data cleanup - which is
good. I spend too much time talking and not enough doing. I need to
snap points to the endpoints of lines. If I set snapping up and use the
move features tool the point doesn't snap to the line. If I move the
point using the node tool the point snaps to the line.

I've been looking for an option or something to change. I'm not seeing
one. Is this expected behavior? To me it would make more sense for both
tools to snap data - but I may be missing something. If I add data, the
data snaps as I would expect it. The good people I'm helping
immediately started moving data and it didn't snap - and I've
instructed them to use the node tool to make the edits.

QGIS 2.18.9 - Linux

Thanks
Randy

My big fear this weekend was I was doing something wrong. I used your

just mistyped in the email. I need to update some notes on my end now to

Hi Randal,

Note, that the correct parameter is "tiled=yes" not "tiles=yes". Not
sure if this helps.

Fyi - here is one of my examples with gdal_warp:

gdalwarp -of GTiff -wm 500 --config GDAL_CACHEMAX 500 -multi -wo
NUM_THREADS=2 -wo OPTIMIZE_SIZE=TRUE -srcnodata "255 255 255"
-dstnodata '255 255 255' -t_srs 'EPSG:2056' -co 'BIGTIFF=YES' -co
'TILED=YES' -co 'COMPRESS=JPEG' -co 'JPEG_QUALITY=85' -co
'PHOTOMETRIC=YCBCR' -co 'SPARSE_OK=TRUE' Originaldaten/*.tif
DOP2011_LV95.tif

the PHOTOMETRIC=YCBCR is specifically to be used for aerial images or
satellite images.

Of course, for good performance, you also need the pyramids:

gdaladdo -r cubic --config BIGTIFF_OVERVIEW YES --config
COMPRESS_OVERVIEW JPEG --config JPEG_QUALITY 85 --config
PHOTOMETRIC_OVERVIEW YCBCR --config INTERLEAVE_OVERVIEW PIXEL
DOP2016_LV95.tif 2 4 8 16 32 64 128 256

Hope this helps,

Andreas

If I understand correctly there is a new version of GDAL in UbuntuGIS
that is causing a conflict. They are working to resolve it. For instance
- I am on 2.18.4 and can't upgrade currently. I would install just from
the QGIS Repository and wait a bit - then upgrade to UbuntuGIS in a few

If you right click in the Toolbar section of QGIS you should see a

installed AniMove for QGIS Plugin as you can see in the attached file
but I can not access the tool. I can not figure out how to access the
AniMove tool once the Plugin was installed. I looked all over. Any
help will be appreciated.

Hi Tsering,
the tools are available in Processing; they require their activation
under Processing options. You are welcome to help us writing a
documentation for it, as I do not have resoucers currently to do it.
All the best.

up value relations and we now have drop down lists for about everything.

I decided to save what I am doing. I saved the data layer as a qlr. I
saved the style as a qml. I re-added the data using the qlr and the
style using the qml. EXCEPT - it didn't restore the value relations.
They are in the qml file:

the Layer -> contractor_tbl20170317111848429 isn't quite the right
name but I'm assuming that's some internal QGIS layer naming. I even
changed it - it wouldn't restore.

I did more digging and discovered the value relation is also in the
qlr file - but it's not restoring the widgets either. Maybe it
doesn't matter that I saved a qml.

Question is - should it restore? Or are value relations (widgets)
just for that QGIS session - so I need to set this up 5 times for 5

Re: [Qgis-user] Converting to shp to gpx. Doesn't work normal with "Save as..."

2017-03-15 Thread Randal Hale
I hate answers like the one I'm about to give - but you might want to
upgrade to at least 2.14 or 2.18 - the "save as" to GPX works really
well in those versions - and I use it with Garmin GPS units all the
time. It seems like that at 2.12 you were still setting options in the
"Save As" Dialog.

my garmin GPS. So, I opened the shp file in Qgis and right botton in
the layer -> Save as ->

Format:GPS
GPX_EXTENSIONS_NS:ogr
GPX_EXTENSIONS_NS_URL:http://osgeo.org/gdal
GPX_USE_EXTENSIONS:YES
FORCE_GPX_ROUTE:NO
FORCE_GPX_TRACK:NO

It creates a new layer but with no information and when I try to open
this file with Garmin Basecamp it gives my an unknown error.

Could someone help me with that? Thanks in advance,

Re: [Qgis-user] spatialjoin

2016-12-22 Thread Randal Hale
 steps,
though it produces
a lot of temporary files cluttering the project.

A better way for all those repetitive tasks, is to use
the graphical
modeller, to create a workflow which only has to be
triggered once new
points come in, and the resulting file can be saved as
new a file e.g.
with the current date in the name, so you have kind of an
archive and do not
overwrite previous files (and destroy your work in case
something goes
wrong).

So I can imagine a model with input layer A (new points
in WGS84 without attributes) and a parcel layer B (in
whatever projection).
reproject layer A and C will be created as an
intermediate step.

Next input layer is the latest result layer D,
reprojected and with attributes.
Merge layer C and D -> E. Now delete all columns which
are from layer B (from the last spatial join.
Unfortunately, you can only delete one field at a time in
the modeller, so you'll will have to add the command
several times in a row to the model) -> Fn
Do the spatial join of Fn with B.

The last result G will now hold all points with the
corresponding parcel info plus additional fields you
might have added to the points.
G will be the input D in the next run with fresh points.

So, do not add new points to the already existing
collection of points in WGS84 (it is never save to edit
layers without backup), but just import them as a new
input set and then run the model with the parcel layer
and the last result layer.

The modeller is not as intuitive as it should be, but it
can save you a lot of time once you managed to set up a
model.

Maybe I was completely wrong analysing the problem, but
maybe someone else has the problem that fits to my
solution ;)
Cheers
Bernd

2. THE MOST IMPORTANT THING. You mentioned you had

Coordinate Reference System mentioned and many times
it is something like EPSG: . A Spatial Join must
have the layers in the same coordinate system.

If it is different - Right Click on your GPS points
and "Save as". When the "Save vector layer as"
window comes up. Save it as a shapefile and MOST
IMPORTANTLY change the CRS to match your parcel
layer. Click on the small globe (that appears to be
wearing a hat) and in the filter type in the number
you see for your parcels. You can then select that
projection and Save your file. It should save. You
can then perform the "join by location".

It should work. You are very close though so don't worry.

Re: [Qgis-user] Splitting Spatialite layers

2016-12-11 Thread Randal Hale
You're hitting a bug that exists in QGIS 2.16 and 2.18 - They are
working on a resolution.

See Below:

http://hub.qgis.org/issues/15847

On 12/11/2016 08:39 PM, custard wrote:

Hi All,

As a mostly shape/tab file user, I've been attempting to experiment
with spatialite dbs a bit recently, and am starting to get a bit more
used to them. I'm hitting a problem with splitting objects though, and
wondered if this annoyance counted as a bug?

If I have a spatialite layer and split an object, that's fine. But
when I save the layer I get a "Could not commit changes to layer
LayerName" banner. If I press "Show more" then I get something like this:

_

Could not commit changes to layer layername

Errors: SUCCESS: 1 geometries were changed.

SUCCESS: 1 attribute value(s) changed.

ERROR: 4 feature(s) not added.

Provider errors:

SQLite error: UNIQUE constraint failed: LayerName.pkuid

SQL: INSERT INTO
"layername"("geometry","pkuid","Code","Lith","Description","Quality","code1","lith1","description1","quality1")
VALUES (ST_Multi(GeomFromWKB(?, 28351)),?,?,?,?,?,?,?,?,?)

I'm not populaing the pkuid data, so I think QGIS is auto filling this.

I think that what's happening is that when QGIS splits the feature
both new parts have the same pkuid number. Certainly if I go in
manually and change the field I can save without errors.

If QGIS is auto filling this column, ought it not be handling the
splitting case too?

Thoughts?

-ramon.

Lemme do some digging - I'm not entirely sure why yours isn't opening.
I'm running xubuntu 16.04 and qgis 2.18.1 and it works.

Are you in a Virtual Machine or installed on a computer? This is going
to sound stupid but is your networking up? Can you ping something on the
outside world. I just turned networking off and got the same error. I'm
hoping you're about to save you're in a VM and maybe the networking is
being weird.

Re: [Qgis-user] Count points overlaying a raster layer

2016-11-28 Thread Randal Hale

I would convert your raster to vector.

Assuming you are on 2.18 (which is what I am currently using) - open
your processing toolbox. At the top of QGIS click on Processing -> Toolbox.

1. In your toolbox go to GDAL/OGR -> Conversion -> Polygonize raster to
Vector. Once you change that to a vector file then go to the next step.

2. In your toolbox go to QGIS geoalgorithms -> Vector Analysis Tools ->
Count points in polygons. That should add a field to your new polygon
shapefile with the number of points in that polygon.

Good Luck.

Re: [Qgis-user] different buffer for the same field

2016-11-16 Thread Randal Hale

In the processing Toolbox there is a tool called Variable Distance Buffer.

If you add a field to your data giving each type a width (field called
bufferwidth and it is 10, 20, 30 , 40 meters for each type) - you can
use that tool to automatically buffer each fault accordingly.

Good Luck!

See in the attachment.

The 4 samples are: normal fault, inverse fault, overthrust, syncline.

I would like to create a buffer with different distance for each
sample (the best it would be to obtain a shape with 5 different buffer
distances).

For example the buffer distance for the sample “ normal fault” is 30

for the “syncline” is 20 m.

How I can do this kind of buffer??

doing it wrong. Yippee for repeatable discoveries that may or may not be
an error.

 Which contexts?

Can I display "1 inch to 660 Feet" through use of an expression?
I've been manually typing it in and sometimes I'll change map

Re: [Qgis-user] Clipping a Raster with a Mask Layer - update - possible bug

2016-10-07 Thread Randal Hale

So I've got an update on this.

If I run this with the command line (gdal 2.1):

gdalwarp -cutline acid_forest_buffer.shp low_east.tif output.tif
/Processing input file low_east.tif.//
//Using internal nodata values (e.g. -3.40282e+38) for image low_east.tif.//
//Warning 1: Self-intersection at or near point 2309.5402184630693
1121.2793755624425//

//ERROR 1: Cutline is not valid after transformation/

I had one community member confirm the clip works in 2.14.1. I think
ultimately this is a gdal version problem - sort of.

If I look at the shapefile in QGIS I get an error using the topology
tools looking for overlaps. I seem to have 2 multipolygons in this data.
I clean those up and the tool runs as expected.

Is there something with gdal 2.1 that chokes with a multipolygon in
running this type of clip against a raster?

I have a raster and polygons. All matching in projection. M one worry
is the raster is a float32 tiff and something it wrong with it. I
didn't create the raster but I am trying to help someone work their
way through this exercise for a College Class.

When I use the processing tool to clip the raster with the vector I
get an output image that in the legend shows the values as being nan -
which I guess is null. No matter what I do - there is no clip. Just a
large image that is black or nan (null).

Thoughts? I'm stuck. I don't know if I'm seeing a bug or I've got a
bad image. The person originally working through this said it all
works correctly with 2.8 (but I haven't attempted that version as of
yet).

Henri - sorry for the late reply back.

If you look under /etc/apt/sources.list.d - do you have a QGIS.list
file? Or something under /etc/apt/sources.list with a repository listing
for QGIS?

Yes - it is possible because I am sitting here running QGIS on Ubuntu 16.04.

Even if the users are aware of the fact that ubuntugis-unstable

I don't think it's necessarily ignorance - the word unstable means "no
stable; not firm or firmly fixed; unsteady" [1]. At my old place of
employment software that was in any way related to the work "unstable"
would never get installed or tested.

UbuntuGIS-unstable isn't unstable. BUT - it has that word associated
with it. It is confusing for users. If we told the windows users to grab
their installation files from a directory labeled *unstable* there would
be much unhappiness.

We have packages in qgis.org/debian/ against the plain versions of the

distributions (debian and **ubuntu**) and in qgis/ubuntugis/ packages
against

newer dependencies from - and only from - ubuntugis-unstable.

Looks like it's hard for people to accept that there are also ubuntu
packages

in a directory called debian and that probably makes them jump on the other

because it has ubuntu in it's name.

I was thinking about it last night (and I was up way to late) and it
is a bit confusing for the casual user. They've installed Ubuntu (or
mint/debian/xubuntu/etc) and they may not understand ubuntu is based
off debian. So like you said - they see debian but want to use Ubuntu.
They go to UbuntuGIS and they see the repositories for UbuntuGIS and
the choice is unstable (and no one likes unstable software) and stable
(which doesn't contain the newest software). So you end up going "Use
Unstable because it's stable and current".

Under my /etc/apt/sources.list.d directory I made a qgis.list file

and put the following in there:

debhttp://qgis.org/debian xenial main

debhttp://ppa.launchpad.net/ubuntugis/ubuntugis-unstable/ubuntu xenial
main

Why? That are the packages not based on ubuntugis with the dependencies
from

ubuntugis.

Do I have this wrong? I thought I had the repositories for the install
correct based off the directions on qgis.org. Which I could completely
have it wrong. With the above repos I'm getting QGIS 2.16.x and GDAL
2.1.x.
