Re: [RBW] Re: 1.5 x N+1

2017-07-31 Thread Jay Connolly
Decided on a 59cm Clem Smith, Jr L. I love the ride of the Appaloosa and am
sold on the long-long chainstays.

This bike will remain permanently on the island, will be geared low, and will
be a utility bike. The ride to the village on the island is about 2 miles, all
uphill, and I intend to use the bike for every possible grocery trip, jaunt to
the various beaches, and just bimbling around on any number of short rides. It
will be fully racked and basketed.

The Ferry to the "big island" is about 1.5 miles away, and on the other side is
a big shopping centre, so the bike will go back and forth for that. My parents
live about 5 miles up the road on the other side of that ferry ride, as well,
so I will use the bike to "commute" to them.

In the summers I'll take my Sam to the island for the regular bike club rides.

Really looking forward to this bike.

[RBW] Saddle height vs PBH

2017-07-29 Thread Jay Connolly
My PBH is 95 and I run my saddles (180/178 cranks) at 85. On my Joe, I use
Pedaling Innovations long pedals and push my foot further forward. The saddle
on that one is at 84. (Jury still out on the overall value of the pedals, but I
no longer suffer excruciating hot foot on long rides, so that aspect of the
experiment has been a success.)

Re: [RBW] N minus 2 plus 1

2017-08-01 Thread Jay Connolly
Keep the Jones, sell the Surly; keep the Bombadil, sell the Fargo. Buy a
Roadini or a Roadeo, or something similar. Use the Jones for all rough tracks,
snow, mud, and so on. Use the Bombadil for mixed surface rides, groomed gravel,
light trails, and easy recreational rides. Buy a more Road-boasted bike for
pushing yourself on the pavement.

I know the problem. In my enthusiasm for bikes I liked, I used to have a
tendency to replicate them. Always this led to the realization that I had
simply duplicated, but rarely improved, something I liked. I have a Jones Plus
and would never sell it, though I may do what you've done and at a fat front
tire to make it even more versatile. It's my mountain biking, single-track, and
bikepacking rig (replaced a Fargo I used on the GDMBR in 2015). I have an
Appaloosa set up with a relatively high drop bar and full racks, and it's
incredibly comfortable for touring, for hauling, and for rose-smelling. I have
a Sam Hillborne set up with a lower bar and no racks, and I ride that briskly
for 1, 2, or 3 hours at a time. I think of it as my fitness bike. The Appaloosa
and the Sam could be setup similarly, but they are completely different bikes
the way I have them rigged.

Good luck with reconstructing your stable.

2017-08-03 Thread Jay Connolly
I tend to agree with Bill. I used to own a Trucker. Good bike, but it felt dead
without a load, and the wheelbase was 460, I believe, not the Appaloosa's 535
(if I'm remembering right). Huge Difference. I ride my Appaloosa with drops
about an inch above the saddle. Hard to get the Trucker front end up that high
without looking truly awful.

[RBW] Tires, revisited.

2017-08-11 Thread Jay Connolly
Patrick, I have a similar issue, though a different use for the tires. I am
going to be using my Joe as a hauler/commuter and so I want a tire that will
make flats rare. I use the Snoqualmie Pass tires right now, but flats are
inevitable with those tires, and I'd rather avoid the hassle on this particular
bike. The problem is, I'm so spoiled by the ride of these tires that I'm loathe
to use something that's going to feel sluggish. I have a set of Schwalbe
Almotion 700 x 50s, but they weigh about 800 grams each, I believe, and both
tires wobble on the rims. (After a similarly wobbly Kojaks a couple of years
ago, I think I'm done with Schwalbe. Seems to be a common complaint.) I may go
with the Clement Xplor 700 x 50.

Re: [RBW] Re: New bike day! Apppaloosa!

2017-08-10 Thread Jay Connolly
Looks great. Regarding your comment about the bike being nimble: I keep
tinkering with my Joe and now have a Jones Loop 710 bar on it. After riding it
for a couple of months with a drop bar, the upright bar is a revelation. I
ordered the bike with an Albatross bar, but was too accustomed to drop bars to
warm to it. Now I think I understand that this bike was designed for an upright
bar. The handling is noticeably better upright, at all speeds.

[RBW] Re: How do you guys do it, buying a bike sight unseen

2017-08-10 Thread Jay Connolly
At my size (6'5", 260) and location (on an Island with a total population of
not much more than 500k) it's hard to find bikes to test ride. My first 700c
bike (a 60cm Trek 520) was too small, though the salesman/store owner insisted
that it would be a good fit. In time, I bought a 62cm Surly Cross Check, which
I loved, except the 613mm stack made it a trial to get the bars up without
making the bike look clownish. Still, it was one of the best bikes I've owned.
I ended up selling it to my brother, as it fit him beautifully. I used the geo
of the Surly to guesstimate fit on a whole passel of bikes over the years, with
particular emphasis on top tube length and seat post angle (see Bill Lindsey's
discussion of his Sam Hillborne in his thread about 10 bikes and 2000 miles). I
also learned more about how to finesse fit with stems, bars, saddles, & posts.
If you have one bike that fits you very well, you can extrapolate pretty
accurately, though you may be forced to drop some discretionary cash on changes
to the items I mentioned above. The learning curve has been expensive for me,
but for various reasons, I'm okay with that. When my wife found me tearing
furiously at the packaging of a new part one day, she paused in the doorway for
a moment and said, "This is instead of a younger woman, right?" And I said,
"Absolutely and unequivocally, Yes!" And she said, "Then it's okay with me."

They run 42mm on DT Swiss TK540 rims and 43mm on Mavic A719s. Both rims have an

the time the tires have been on the rims. I've had them on the Sam for a

[RBW] Re: 1.5 x N+1

2017-07-21 Thread Jay Connolly
Yes, height has its curses when it comes to bicycles. For years I have ridden
bikes with long top tubes (Surlys before Rivs). My first "modern" bike was a
Trek 520. I knew nothing about sizing and geometry when I bought it. Turned out
the sale an sold me a 60 when I needed the next size up. I could not stand on
the bike to climb because a) I'd bang my knees on the barcons, and b) it was
difficult to get my weight sufficiently forward on a too-small frame. I like a
spacious frame. At this point, I don't mind paying for what I like, but I don't
want to create too much redundancy, either. I like my bikes to have distinct
ride characteristics, not subtle ones. Huge difference between my Joe and my
Sam, for instance, despite the fact that they could be make to ride quite
similarly. One of those could go to the cottage. I wouldn't mind building up a
drop-bar mountain rig along the lines of a Fargo. I'm in no rush to do this,
though, and I'll be interested to see what Riv comes out with in the next year
or so.

[RBW] Atlantis Bars: Drop or Moustache?

2017-07-27 Thread Jay Connolly
I set up my Joe with moustache bars for a while. I really liked them, but the
hoods position on a drop bar pushes me a little further forward, which I like.
Certainly I could have managed this with a 130 stem on the moustache, but I
also find that when the bars are an inch above the seat, the drops become more
useful, so for me, the drops give an extra hand position or two. Still, I
really like moustache bars, and I'm determined to use the ones I have on
another bike, sooner or later. I tried a Soma bar because I bought them cheap,
but I think the Nitto moustache and Albastache are much more attractive in
their shape.

[RBW] 1.5 x N+1

2017-07-19 Thread Jay Connolly
We just put an offer in on a cottage (which will become the basis of a
retirement home down the line) on an Island 50 miles from where we live and
work. I'm just now working out the logic to eventually explain to my wife that
this may mean I need another bike. Makes no sense, labor-wise, to haul a bike
up there every time we go. Also, the cottage is on an island that requires a
25-minute ferry ride. At peak times, the extension to the car of the bike rack
could mean that some poor soul behind us wouldn't be able to get on the boat,
for lack of room. On the Island, the bike will eventually save its cost in gas
by providing "free" transportation to the village for groceries and
appointments.

Are you people buying any of this?

I've seen I'm my limited investigations online.

I'm intrigued by a recent suggestion on the Blahg that Riv was working on some
interesting things that we'll see in the next year or so. I have a Sam, set up
fairly light, that's my "fast" bike, a Joe, which is outfitted to travel to the
ends of the earth, and a Jones Plus that I use for backcountry riding. These
bikes cover virtually all riding needs, so the only way to justify the
potential redundancy of a new acquisition is with the new property. No point in
a Clem--got a Joe. No point in a Roadini--got a Sam. No need for a Hunq--got a
Jones.

It occurs to me that I may have become interested in the cottage property just
so I could justify a new bike!

Re: [RBW] Re: Grant Petersen Interview up on the Gravel & Grind website

2017-07-28 Thread Jay Connolly
I was intrigued by this number, as well. I heard an interview with Grant
somewhere in which he expressed reluctance to excite the hostile, loveless
bike-frame geometers of the interwebs, and I don't blame him. I've owned 15 or
more steel bikes in the last 20 years, and only on the Rivs have I been able,
effortlessly, to ride no hands. I take that as a sign of balance and stability
in the bike. I could do it briefly on various other frames, but nothing like
the Rivs. Maybe it's meaningless, but I find it both useful and pleasant on
long rides.

[RBW] Possible alternate brew method for those coffee on the go riders.

2017-07-30 Thread Jay Connolly
I really like bold coffee, and I find that coffee made with this sort of system
comes out a bit "thin." Best thing I've found is the aeropress, which allows
you to control the brew time and make anything from "espresso" to a full cup of
coffee. If you're getting the taste you want, though, then there's probably
nothing simpler, easier, and more cost effective than what you're doing.

[RBW] Hunqapillar or Appaloosa?

2017-08-02 Thread Jay Connolly
No question that the fork is more burly on the 2017s. I had that straight front
Grant.

If the trails and light and relatively smooth, the Appaloosa would bike fine. I
like the widest possible tires for rough trails. On a recently camping trip, I
took the Appaloosa and suffered a little over about 10km of rocky trails. I
should have dropped the pressure in the tires, which would have improved
things, but a genuine MTB would have been a better choice for the day. If that
sort of riding (rough, rocky trails) will be rare for you, the Joe will be just
fine. If it's more regular, then I'd go with the Hunq.

All the more reason to keep the Jones, in my view. You'd have to talk to Riv
about tolerances. I'm 6'5" and 265, and in that context, the Sam is not a burly
bike. Grant advised me that it would be just fine as a road bike but less
suited to trail riding and loaded touring. It's a great road bike, for my
purposes. The Jones is a great mountain bike, for my purposes.

[RBW] Roadini Sizes

2017-08-07 Thread Jay Connolly
I'm not going to buy one, but does anybody understand what the Roadini frame
sizes actually are? One of the pics on the site says it's of a 63.
Earlier--months ago--the bike was described as coming in a 62. I believe the
brochure refers to the dimensions of 61. I'm not going to buy one. Just
wondering. In recent communications, I believe it says that the frames came in
one cm different than originally stated. Does this mean that the original 62
came in as a 63 or as a 61? I'm just trying to clarify so that others have
clear information. I'm not going to buy one. I don't need it. Especially the
grey one--that's the one I really don't need.

[RBW] 59 vs. 52 Clem L

2017-08-05 Thread Jay Connolly
I have recently put my name on the list for a Clem 64 L, which will be
available in the fall. Originally I ordered a 59, but I wanted to double-check
the sizing. In an email exchange, Grant told me that most people will fit two
sizes of Clem, which makes sense to me. I don't love church-pew uprightness

Re: [RBW] Re: Discs versus calipers

2017-06-26 Thread Jay Connolly
I used only canti brakes a quite a while. Then I went ro discs. When I
discovered v-brakes, I wondered why I had bothered with discs. For true MTBs, I
think discs are an advantage in mud, and I prefer XT-level hydraulics, which
have been faultless, for me. Most mechanicals are fiddly, though the best I've
found are TRP Spyres, which are less so. Back to v-brakes: TRP CX9s are the
strongest brakes I have used--bar none, including discs. They don't allow much
more than a 35mm tire with fenders, but they are strong enough to pitch anyone
over the bars. On my Appaloosa I'm running Avid Single-Digit 7s, ands they are
more than strong enough for me--as good or better than any mechanical disc I've
used.

Having said that, there's this: Riv can't win the battle against industry
"progress" on this issue, unfortunately, because the perception will be that
the bikes are pre-obsolete and the fear will be that replacement parts will be
unavailable. Both will hit sales harder and harder as time marches forward. I
ride with 30-year-olds who have never owned a bike without discs. As these
people age and acquire the earning power to embrace a wider set of values in
their bicycles, they will likely reject the bikes on the brake issue. I love
everything about the company, including their collective stubbornness, but I
would also like to see the business survive and thrive.

Re: [RBW] Breaking in a leather Brooks

2017-06-19 Thread Jay Connolly
I bought a blue Brooks to match my first-ever bike build some years ago. Rode
it for an hour, then took it off because it chafed. A month later, I tried
again. Maybe a couple of rides. Still hated it. This went on for a couple of
years, until I had three or four hundred kilometres on the saddle. Then, one
day, I put it on and headed down the road . . . and suddenly thought, "Hey, NOW
I get it." All those rides--maybe 10 or so--and I had inadvertently broken it
in. I recently broke in another on my Appaloosa, only this time I had the sense
to tolerate the relative discomfort for the required duration. I'm heavy, so a
Brooks probably comes around a little more quickly for me than it might for a
lighter person.

Patience. Use the saddle cream on yourself, not the saddle.

Re: [RBW] Re: Jones and Hunq

2017-05-21 Thread Jay Connolly
I have not ridden the Hunq, but it was my Jones Plus that set me on the path to
Rivendell. In 2015, I rode most of the Great Divide route on a Salsa Fargo. It
was okay, but even the XL frame was not a great fit for me, given the long days
in the saddle. Last year I built up a Jones Plus and absolutely love it. The
more upright riding position and the 3" tires are perfect for touring on rough
roads. We had planned to go back to the Divide again this summer, but family
influences have changes our plans, and we now intend to do a road ride through
the Yukon and parts of Alaska this summer, so I went looking for a proper
touring bike and wound up with a 62cm Joe Appaloosa, which puts me in a
position similar to the Jones Plus. The Jones bar and the high-stack front end
are really the keys to the design. With the right bar and a bit of fidgeting,
you can replicate the position on a lot of bikes.

I think the VO Crazy Bar is an option. I made a facsimile by adding 6" bar ends

position on the apex of the bar, and an upright position. Probably the best
multi-position flatbar is the Jones Loop, which gives 5 positions, but if
you're running a quill stem, you will have to get one with a 31.8 bar clamp.

Re: [RBW] Turkey Vulture Gearing 101

After working plenty with 10-speed systems, I've been moving more toward
friction shifting and 9- or 8-speed systems. Having said that, I set up a
flawless 11-speed transmission with the following:

- Shimano 11-speed 105 brifters
- White Industries 46-30 VBC road crank (also have 42-26 rings, but not the
proprietary tool to swap the rings)
- Shimano 11-speed M8000 rear mech
- Shimano CX70 front mech
- Shimano 11-40 rear cassette.
- Wolf Tooth tanpan cable pull converter

The system shifts perfectly and gives me 20-114 gear inches, I believe.

I have a set of Almotion 700 x 50s. They are good tires and I intended to tour

The Compass tires soak up road imperfections in a way that the Almotions
cannot. Some people care about this, but others simply don't feel it or care
about it in the same way. I'm tall and heavy and I notice it, so the extra cost
and the greater potential for damage to the tire is worth it to me.

[RBW] Last Blue 62 Sam Hillborne Frame

2017-06-16 Thread Jay Connolly
I bought my 62cm silver Appaloosa about a month ago and have tinkered
obsessively to get the setup exactly as I want it for a light tour this summer
(2000km, all told, through the Yukon and Alaska). The bike has front the and
rear Surly racks and SKS fenders, fairly heavy oversize aluminum pedals, a
kickstand, a brooks saddle, and so on. It weights AT LEAST 35 pounds--maybe
closer to 40--and I absolutely love it. I'm 6'5" and tip the scales at about
265, and I'm never lighter than 250, so a few extra pounds of bicycle is pretty
much unnoticeable. I generally average about 15 mph. My all time record on a
flattish local route was an average of 20 mph, and once I hit that mark, I gave
up trying to exceed it. The Appaloosa will be my tourer/shopper/hauler.

This afternoon I ordered the last blue-and-cream 62cm Sam Hillborne from Vince
at Rivendell. This bike will be built for long (and short) local rides. No
fenders, no racks, 32-35 gumwalls, with a brown Brooks and maybe leather bar
tape, plus a lot of polished silver parts. I don't imagine I'll be more than
about about 1 mph faster on it than I am on the Appaloosa, but it will be a
completely different aesthetic and will run a moustache bar (probably Nitto
rather than Albastache). It will be my fast (all things being relative) bike.

The bikes are similar in geomerty, but that will suit me just fine. I'm hoping
to last a while with just three bikes--Appaloosa, Sam Hillborne, and my Jones
Plus for off-road duties. Plus a winter bike, of course.

Just had to share my excitement.

[RBW] Re: Last Blue 62 Sam Hillborne Frame

2017-06-17 Thread Jay Connolly
I am a fan of Surlys and have owned several. The flat top tubes and short head
tubes, however, always made it a challenge to get the bars where I wanted them.
I love the long head tubes and quick up-down adjustment of the quill stems on
the Rivendells. The Appaloosa fits me well and I'm confident that the Sam will
exactly what I'm looking for in a "fast" bike. In my effiorts to get the fit of
the Joe just right, I acquired a couple of extra stems and bars (including an
Albatross), so I'll have options to work with when the frame gets here.

Re: [RBW] Re: Rivs on the Great Divide Route?

2017-06-17 Thread Jay Connolly
My wife and I rode 2700 kms of the GDMBR in 2015 and planned to go back this
year, but family circumstances changed our plans. I rode a Fargo with 2.4
Maxxis Ardents. When I returned, I sold the Fargo and bought a Jones Plus. I
prefer rigid bikes, but because I'm tall and heavy, the more suspension from
the tires, the better. Any rider of average size would be just fine on 2.2s or
better, so any strong frame with enough clearance would be fine. People travel
large portions of the route on cross bikes (supported, usually). For the long
haul, it's ablout comfort.

I would recommend bikepacking bags rather than panniers. For most riders, there
will be some pushing, and loaded panniers can make hike-a-bike awkward. On very
small bikes, a "rack" to support a dry bag behind the seat post will allow teh
rider to maintain tire clearance. Portland Design Works makes an excellent one.

I would sell my maps, but I hope to do the whole thing next year.

[RBW] Re: Giving up on my Cambium C17

2017-06-14 Thread Jay Connolly
I have both Rivet saddles and Brooks saddles. The Rivets are comfortable more
quickly, IMO, but the Brooks saddles are a little more comfortable in time. I
tried the Cambium and hated it. I was surprised by the claims that it was
designed to replicate a B17 in a different material. I'm plenty heavy enough to
take advantage of the flex in a Cambiu, but it felt like 2x4s to me.

[RBW] 64cm Clem L

2017-09-15 Thread Jay Connolly
Ordered. I have been admiring the Cheviots and Clem's for some time, and at one
point I was going to order a 59 Clem. Then I caught wind of the 64 Clem L and
yesterday snagged the first pre-order frameset in grilver.

As recently as 3 years ago, I may well have scoffed at the idea of a
step-through (or even a rack or kickstand) despite the fact that I've never
been fast and have ZERO claims on the title "performance cyclist." But I set my
Joe up as a hauler (basket, medium Saddlesack, a rear rack when needed, etc)
and have enjoyed it tremendously. I took that bike to our new cottage a week
ago and miss it already. The big Clem L will replace the Joe on the home front.
I will build it up as a 1x11 with a 32 front and an 11-42 rear, since I have
those parts on-hand.

[RBW] Appaloosa/Albastache Stem Question

2017-09-23 Thread Jay Connolly
I tried a moustache bar on my Joe and liked it. I replaced it because it was
only about 50cm wide, and I wanted more width. Everything else I liked about
the bar. I ran it so the hoods were about an inch above the saddle and the
bar-ends were about an inch below. The Albastache has more width and less drop
(and the most attractive curve, in my view), and if you run the highest point
of the bar an inch above, you’ll be about level any the shifters. If that
doesn’t work, go up another inch. If the Tallux or Technomic stems don’t give
you enough rise, a dirt stem might solve the issue.

[RBW] Re: Anyone using Catalyst Pedals on their Rivendell?

2017-10-07 Thread Jay Connolly
If you accept the developer’s research, then pedalling midfoot is not entirely
the point. It’s a matter of applying the “lifting” force from more of the foot.
If memory serves, he says the benefit will come only if the force is applied
from either side of the arch. Whether you accept his thinking (and research or
not), it’s worth a look-over to understand the development of the pedal.

[RBW] Are you an "Oscar," or a "Felix" bike rider?

2017-10-01 Thread Jay Connolly
When I purchase a new bike or frame, I'm obsessively Felixian. I strive for
perfection in the build and often use helicopter tape on sections of tubing
most likely to get scratched. After a month or so, I remain mechanically
obsessive but aesthetically indifferent. I don't like scratches and dings, but
they are inevitable. Before I had Rivs, I did not use kickstands, which meant
my bikes were more often leaned against pillars and posts and fell over with
reasonable regularity. I now have a dedicated utility bike in my Appaloosa and
will have another when the 64cm Clem L arrives (different locations), so I am
really trying to silence my inner Felix.

[RBW] Re: OT: know anything about motorcycles?

2017-10-01 Thread Jay Connolly
If 70 mph highway speeds are important, then you'll probably want something
like a KLR 650. I rode big ADV bikes for years. Once you get used to a twin,
triple, or four on the highway, a "thumper" isn't much fun, but if the highway
runs are relatively short and you want mechanical simplicity, a 650 single is
probably the way to go. The KLR engine is counterbalanced, which makes it
significantly smoother at speed than the Honda. Not sure about the Suzuki. The
advantage to these bikes is that they have remained mostly unchanged for many
years, so parts are easy to source and expertise is easily accessed on the
interwebs. You won't have any trouble finding a Suzuki, Honda, or Kawasaki in
your price range.

Re: [RBW] S24O Report: Avoiding the Toilet-Eating-Bog by Bikepacking to Another

2017-08-27 Thread Jay Connolly
Thoroughly enjoyable, as usual. I respect a man who has the sense to escape on
a bike ride and leave technical tasks to trained professionals. As I like to
say, "I could pay myself to do it twice, but I'd rather save some money and
have a pro do it right the first time."

By all means, read Angela's Ashes.

I've often wondered about getting a set of those. Now I will.

[RBW] Soma Shikoro 700 x 48

2017-08-30 Thread Jay Connolly
To clarify: There IS a difference between the Compass tires and the Shikoros,
but it's not nearly as dramatic as I expected. I love the ride of the Compass
tires and run them on my Sam. The switch gives me a backup set for that bike.
The Shikoros don't have the incredible road feel of the Compass tires, but I
didn't expect them to. At first blush, however, they seem to be a fast-rolling
tire that will suit my needs on this bike very well.

[RBW] 2.35 inch tires on Atlas rims

2017-09-02 Thread Jay Connolly
I recently stumbled across a compilation of mfg rim-tire recommendations. Maybe
it was here. Wish I'd saved it. Mavic basically says you can run anything up to
a 2.5 on a 19mm internal width rim.

[RBW] Re: Favorite Platform Pedals

2017-09-03 Thread Jay Connolly
I have big, wide feet and suffer from intense hot foot (nerve pain from
metatarsals squeezing together, I'm told). I like Chromag Scarabs for their
massive platforms and Shimano Saints for the length of the spindle. I have one
set of the huge Pedalling Innovations pedals and have become a fan. Rode four
hours at a stretch this morning with zero pain. For shorter rides I use rather
heavy aluminum flats, but they work for me because they have no concave.
Concave exacerbates the hotfoot.

I use Dave's Mud Shovels, front and rear, on my MTB. Overkill, perhaps, but

[RBW] Can you feel a 1.3 gear inch difference going uphill?

2017-08-31 Thread Jay Connolly
Such a great question. I like to be able to go ANYWHERE on my bikes, but I
don't always want to run a triple or lose high-end gears. 19 fest inches gets
me up anything I'll tackle. Would I settle for 20.3? On anything other than a
touring bike, yes. Would I feel the difference? On a long, difficult climb, it
would be on my mind, but it wouldn't put me walking.

Re: [RBW] Diff between slick GravelKing and Compass Babyshoe Pass? Looks the same. Described the same.

2017-10-04 Thread Jay Connolly
I've also been in search of times that would match the Compass tires without
the same high cost. I was working on the assumption that a bigger company with
wider distribution channels could offer the same thing for less. Doesn't appear
to be the case. The closest alternative is the Soma Supple Vitesse, which is
close. The slight price differential matches the ride differential. The Soma is
also a VERY good tire.
