[Wikimedia Kenya] Wikimedia User Group Kenya
Hi folks, I am initiating efforts to recreate/re-start a Wikimedia User Group. Questions I have for those interested to be part of the user group: 1. Should we start a whole new group with different name, entity and people from WMKE or build on the remains of WMKE? 2. Should we focus on same goals and objectives as WMKE or should we redefine our own based on our learnings and experiences with the Chapter? 3. Name? What would be the prefered user group name? Please add more discussion points and solutions so that we can get up and running as soon as possible. Hopefully by the time we have a meetup, we will have solidified some of this things and by the time Kul visits us, we will be a formidable group once again. Please provide input lest if no one provides input in time, I will go on and file the user group details at my own *discretion. * * * Look forward to more interesting discussions and insights on way forward. Re: [Wikimedia Kenya] From chapter to user group
Hi All, I know all of us have been absorbing and digesting this news over the past couple of weeks. I think its time we now discussed and forged a way forward. True we were our own let down in many ways. We failed in many ways to steer ourselves to full registration 12 months after being granted charter. We failed to get legal registration locally and we failed to manage the 1st Start up grant for our Chapter. We failed to resolve issues surrounding the embezzlement and we refused to take responsibility I think Sue and Asaf are justified to deny us further recognition. So I guess its a User group we are. As such, we need to start to chat a way forward along this line. Could we start taking a new call for this user group? Remember, Officially Wikimedia Kenya Chapter is no more If you would want to join and be apart of this user group, please let us start a conversation Only if you are interested. Look forward to this new course. [Wikimedia Kenya] Mombasa Tech Group wants an Outreach and Collaboration
Hello Everyone, As some of us remember, Last year, we organized some Outreach Ecents across various regions in Kenya including Mombasa and Nakuru ( http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wikimedia_Kenya/Outreach_2012 ) The Mombasa Outreach was held in collaboration with the Kenyan Mozilla Community and the The Mombasa Tech Group in Mombasa. The Mombasa Tech Group is requesting if we could have such Outreach Events and allow them to engage and collaborate with us in various Wikimedia Related events/activities this year. Hello Bence, Thanks for your efforts and conecrns about the Chapter. Indeed we have heard some concerted efforts to resuscitate the chapter and although not much has come out of the meetings, we all are commited to saving the face and rescuing of the once vibrant Chapter. [Wikimedia Kenya] And the Winning Images for WLM Kenya are.....
Hi Everyone, As we all know, Kenya participated in the Wiki Loves Monuments Contest that concluded recently. We had 97 images uploaded to Commons of Kenyan Monuments cutting across Kenya's diverse geography. Surprising to all of us, we had images from as far as Nyeri and Mombasa A jury of 3 was selected to help judge the images that would participate in the International Contest. The Jury was Diverse and had consisted of memvsr from: Wikimedia France, Wikimedia Ghana(Unchapter) and Wikimedia Kenya. The judging criteria involved each member of the Jury selecting his/her top 10 best images . After which each member was then allowed to score each image he/she had selected with 10points for best image and 1 point for the least. The points across all the images were then summed and the final score for each image used to select the final images . Incase of a tie in points, the image that was voted by the most number of Jury members was given a higher weight and so forth. Here are the Top 10 Images that would compete in the International Contest: http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:JOMO_KENYATTA.JPG http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:NATION_CENTRE.JPG http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:The_National_monument.jpg http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:NATIONAL_MONUMENT_1.JPG http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:SILVER-_JUBILEE.JPG http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Times_Towers.JPG http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:10years_Nyayo_era.JPG http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:NSSF_Building,_Nairobi.JPG http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:FREEDOM_HEROES_-.JPG http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Global_forest.JPG Next Steps: - First is to Congratulate everyone who prticipated in the Challenge either through helping iwth the ourgainization ir as a participant. - Since we could not ask for a budget for National Winners, we would be trying to solicit for consolation prizes to award to all the Top Images from Friendly Chapters of The Foundation - To reach out to all the participants(especially out of Nairobi) who will be key to our scaling of our projects across the country bearing in mInd that most od us hail in Nairobi - Encouraged by the small success of this, we hope to make a better budget and preparations foe next years WLM Once again, congratulations to all -- Regards, Limoke Oscar, Dream.Believe.Becomea world of endless oportunities ___ WikimediaKE mailing list WikimediaKE@lists.wikimedia.org https://lists.wikimedia.org/mailman/listinfo/wikimediake
[Wikimedia Kenya] When You think of giving up...think of the good old days pur chapter once was :-)
The Kakamega Pilot Preamble The Kakamega Pilot was carried out from 28th-4th March 2011.It was a huge success and a lot was learnt and gained from the pilot. The People The following were the participants in the Pilot. 1. Limoke Oscar <http://wikimedia.or.ke/User:Limoke_oscar> 2. Alexander Wafula <http://wikimedia.or.ke/User:Xelawafs> 3. Sarah Osano 4. Stephen Wanjau 5. Lilian Nyamboga 6. Branton Obwari The Schools The following were the schools visited and the experiences learnt from them. St.Peter's Mumias Boys High School It has around 20 usable computers. The Office was not that much receptive although they okayed the same.I think they did not really understand what it was all about. The Deputy Head teacher whom I had contacted during the pre-visit had been transfered.Nevertheless we were allowed to install in there student computers.Interestingly, one etcher who was working in the computer lab noticed what we were doing and on being explained to,was really excite and instantly he searched and found very rare Art notes he was teaching his students!Excited,he printed the same and went out to fetch other teachers to explain to them the same.It was explained to a few teachers who liked the idea so much.Although we did not have audience with the students,we were glad that a few teachers learnt and liked the project. Muslim Boys Secondary School Very receptive School.Problem was they had very old computers. Most of which did not have USB ports or DVD Roms(We will post pics soon). We installed in a few student computers and to the office and staff computers. We also made a presentation to the a huge number of students. The lab technician requested some utility software which unfortunately we did not have after a power blackout caused there central examination repository computer to crash. Unfortunately it was while we we had just started installing Kiwix!! We also encountered a problem with the Director of Studies computer which apparently crashed after we had used a flash disc from the student computers to install in his computer.Alex-our IT guy later explained why it may have crashed still after we had formated the flash disc. That the viruses may still have been transfered in our computers and the student computers thus still after formating, they still got transmitted to the flash from our computers. Alex was however quick to correct a repeat of the same by finding a way to make our flash discs "Read Only".Together with Stephen, they successful made our flash discs "Read Only" and thus more secure. Mukumu Girls High School Very receptive.First School to have audience with the Principal in Her office. She really liked the idea and so did all the teachers. We installed in all the Student computer labs and office computers of the school. We had a presentation with to the Students and teachers.the students really found the Wikipedia very resourceful especially those who were preparing for the Science Congress for Kenyan Schools<http://wikimedia.or.ke/index.php?title=Science_Congress_for_Kenyan_Schools&action=edit&redlink=1> Sigalagala Technical Institute The first and only college we visited.Very receptive.Had audience with the Principal and the Management Information System Officer. They really liked it and asked us to come back for a presentation to the students later!A technical challenge due to the logistics and budget constraint. Vihiga High School Very receptive.Had a brief presentation to the teachers who really liked the idea.Installed in all the student computer labs and all the office and personal computers of the teachers.Had a presentation to the students. Mbale Shalom Academy First and only private school we visited.Very receptive.had audience with the management of the School. Installed in all the student computers.Very good computers.Had a presentation to students and teachers Kakamega High School very receptive school.has very good Computers.Installed in most of the student computers and office and personal computers of the staff.Had a presentation to the students and teachers. St.Agnes Shibuye Girls I was skeptical about this school. The head teacher had earlier on been quite 'afraid' with regards to the MoE's letter.but the Director of e-leaning was very supportive.he made sure it was a success.despite having a power blackout, they switched to a generator. We installed in a few computers as not all the computers were served by the generator. We also had a presentation to the students and teachers who were so excited by it. On the sides The Kakamega had lots of fun too.after a hard days work,we visited all the tourist spots around. We visited Mumias Sugar Company<http://wikimedia.or.ke/index.php?title=Mumias_Sugar_Company&action=edit&redlink=1>,"The Bench" in Muliro Gardens<http://wikimedia.or.ke/index.php?title=Muliro_Gardens&action=edit&redlink=1> ,The Cryin
[Wikimedia Kenya] Judging ,Judges and prizes for WLM
Hi, It has just come to my attention that we have yet to get Judges, settle on National Judging Criteria and the ultimate prizes? I think we should put in a grant request for this? Will only photos on this [1] Official Monuments list count for WLM-KE? We have newer or some monumental buildings that are not gazetted yet or did not make it o this liost like: 1. Tom Mboya Munument 2. Dedan Kimathi 3. The Central place for measuring distances from Nairobi(cant get the name but am sure Steve does, courtesy of G4S quiz :-) ) Cheers, 1.http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sites_and_monuments_in_Kenya -- Regards, Limoke Oscar, Dream.Believe.Becomea world of endless oportunities ___ WikimediaKE mailing list WikimediaKE@lists.wikimedia.org https://lists.wikimedia.org/mailman/listinfo/wikimediake

Key thing to fix ASAP and that Lodewijik could help is create a campaign for wlm-ke? whatever that is to allow Kenya uploads count to WLM. Alex, Like we had earlier agreed, we had quite a really short window of time to pull up the contest from getting Sponsors., to getting Judges, criteria etc all in less than 30days. But it seems the page redirects from wikipedia have helped us loop in volunteers and from the other Personal Volunteers i had pulled up who keep pestering me about the contest, we can synch up a quick Criteria and judging so that we get it up and running. We can synch up on a wiki or anywhere to pull this up by end of week?We can then pull in Lodewijik once we have something. Get back to me on this? Hoping you are still in Area Code 254? :-) I suggest Steve keeps the Volunteers on the Commons Page engaged through email and discussions on how/what they could help Way to go good people. David and Issac, I dont undertand. When and Where di I use abusive language? And who is now using abusive language here? Just a FYI David and Isaac, I feel very offended by the metephorising of my arguments as Khalwale'sh. There is no politicking here but it seems David is out to turn it into one. Just so that all the Members know, I pushed this argument to the Boards Mailing List and instead of David responding to my queries there, turns out to the public Mailing List with this sentiments: > I am done arguing with you, simply learn to handle things without being a > Khalwale on these issues. David, Above being a Board Member, I am a member of WMKE and like any other member, shouldn't I behave like a member? Anyway , carry on with the meeting plans, I dint know I was being a pain in the as* with my concerns. I just believe that Wikimedia Kenya is an open movement and as such, all issues relating to it should be dealt in an open way. Re: [Wikimedia Kenya] Finances
Bruce, Thank you for your kind request. Indeed it is unfortunate that Abbas had to leave the Chapter and this is just sign of the kind of murky waters you refer too. The Audit Committee does not exist yet after 2 of its members, Abbas and Grace (told) quit the Chapter. So we have to again call for volunteers. It is rather unfortunate that we as WMKE members dont like to be Critiqued, we prefer having issues sugar coated and personally I dont do that. The main reason why we got ourselves in this state in the first place is the failure of the Board( of which I am part of) and all WMKE members to do joint accountability and raise questions and demand answers. Re: [Wikimedia Kenya] URGENT: Appointment of an Interim Audit Committee
Having an Audit Committee is a good idea, however my question is, What are its mandates? I mean like yes I want us to have one, but what happens when they make recommendations incases of malpractice in the board? I say this because technically all the members have been some sort of auditors and have been checking and asking for answers from the board especially as regards to vary many decisions, financials included. So please let us lay out the mandate of the committee and there is nothing worse like making recommendations that never get implemented like most commissions and committees in Kenya.my personal 2 cents That Said, I know Abbas, Grace (who stepped down from the Chapter) and Kosgei are the other volunteers, so I guess we have an audit Committee ready On Wed, Jul 25, 2012 at 10:52 AM, Branton Obwari wrote: > Hi , > matters of integrity ,n accountability are bound to rise ,in this kind > of organisation i personally thought the issue we just heard on the > mailing list would have been avoided if there was an audit unit as > suggested earlier . > i am available to volunteer on that capacity together with others. > My regrds > > Bruce. > > On 7/25/12, David Mugo wrote: > > Guys, > > > > I hope you are good, I am writing this in great concern of what is > > happening with the chapter and finances. Re: [Wikimedia Kenya] Wiki-Loves Monumnets
Hi Team, That would be awesome. So the Plan Lodewijk and I talked is like this( Not exactly , but my thoughts and suggestions added) 1. We hire a travel van with a tour guide 2. we get interested tourists and journalists to sign up to be part of the Guided Museums and Monuments tour of Nairobi 3. We make them take photos with the tour guide explaining all the symbolism and significance of the Monuments. We could make a video of the same tour (am working with some other external folks to finance this) 4. they agree either to submit or surrender some of their best or all photos of the monuments under CC-BY-SA licence or to us WMKE which wil get them into the Wiki Loves Monuments Competition to stand a chance to win some cool prizes that we need to work on, We could try get some external folks onboard too (Samsung, Safaricom, etc) 5. kabom, WML done with all the Nairobi Monuments with their articles and a cool video too of all the monuments :-) So Once again, am calling on anyone who is interested in this simple plan to volunteer in some way to sign up here. PS: WMZA have a very ambitious budget and plan for the WML, abt $60k USD :-) Just to get jealous On Fri, Jul 13, 2012 at 8:25 PM, Stephen Wanjau wrote: > Hello! > > Yes we can. > > Today I had the privilege to attend an expo <http://pluggedexpo.com/> at > the Sarit Centre in Nairobi Kenya that drew exhibitors from the Kenyan IT > industry, Film industry,Universities etc. The most interesting and > Wikimedian thing about the event is that I attended and I talked to several > filming and media houses about the Wiki Loves Monuments plus possibilities > of having their journalists involved or even contributing images that they > own. > > > Particularly, I spoke to filmbiz Africa, NTV and the Kenya Film > Commission. Steve, Not to be mean nor evil, by I hate lengthy emails I actually meant yea If we could keep the emails shorter and on point, we could make more meaningful communication. Lots of people here have dozens of other engagements that involve email exchange and replyng to the same thread in multiple ways is spam and non-communicative. Yes I am on internal but we cannot compare the kind of politics that happens there to our community discussion list. And no one questioned your contribution to Wikimedia and recognition for the same. Wikipedias hardly show- off their achievements, rather Anyone who hates this lengthy emails as I do? Re: [Wikimedia Kenya] Kenyan Wiki http://www.kenya.or.ke
Greetings Kivuva, Its so nice to finally "meet". I was among the guys who took part in the Kiswahli Wikipedua Challenge. Together with a coupl of others, we started Wikimedia Kenya with the sole aim of supporting free and educational content especially local on the internet and providing access to Kenyans. I have no physical plan on how we can approach this but since we have just initiated contact, I believe this is the 1st key step. Maybe we can have a physical meetup with guys from your team and from our team and then brainstorm on some possible areas of synch and cooperation. We have an upcoming Chapters meetup sometime next month at the iHub and if you guys will be around, I would love you to attend and then we pick it from there.I will inform you on the dates soon. I would really love to meet with the brains behind this great initiative. I believe we will be of great benefit to each other working as a team in achieving our goals. You can have a glance of what we are/have been working on here: http://wikimedia.or.ke/Main_Page Meanwhile could the Team members of WMKE please share on some of the possible ways we could work with this guys? Just to get the discussion going? Thanks Look forward to hearing from you. On Mon, Apr 30, 2012 at 1:38 PM, Kivuva wrote: > Thank you Limoke. Dear Lordmesh, I just dug tis from my archives and thought I could loop you in. So a couple of the KWC winners took up the initiative of starting up a Kenyan Wikimedia Chapter( http://www.wikimedia.or.ke/Home) and we got recognition from the Wikimedia Foundation as the 2nd chapter in Africa and the 39th worldwide. We have been quite an active lot and if you guys are interested, we could find a way to work together to increase Local Kenyan Content online both in Wikipedia and the kenya.or.ke Please let me know what your thoughts are . [Wikimedia Kenya] Coast Outreach Updates
Hi , So we had a great and eventful outreach in Mombasa over the weekend where we met with guys from Mombasa IT society. Mozilla Kenya Community and Wikimedia Kenya delivered interesting talks to the enthusiastic audience of mostly IT profession and students drawn from various Universities. It was exciting to see the level of enthusiasm and zeal from the audience and they were all willing to start the Mombasa Base for our future engagements. We managed to distribute the Offline Wikipedia for schools to a couple of University students ( about 10) who were rely happy and excited about it. One of the main organisers of the event and who is spearheading efforts to create the Mombasa IT society offered to use my presentation to other meet-ups she was going to have and I gladly obliged. We also had the chance to explore the rich culture and "Museum-ish" nature of Mombasa ( we all agreed that the whole of Mombasa is a Museum of its own kind :-) ) and we will be sharing the pics soon. The outreach was great and we had a great team from both camps and we look forward to such great and amazing outreach events. PS: 1. On the 9th to 10th, we have an official invitation to Egerton Universities and Steve is taking Charge of the same 2. On the week of 14th, we have a date with KU and Alex is taking charge of that. [Wikimedia Kenya] Mombasa Outreach Budget and KU updates
Dear All, I trust we are all doing great and are all aware of the scheduled Mombasa Outreach this Friday. You can take a look at the Meta page here: http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wikimedia_Kenya_Outreach_2012 to know what we have in store . I have created a small budget for the same here too: http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Talk:Wikimedia_Kenya_Outreach_2012 and would love your input into it. So far no one has come out ON-LIST to volunteer to help with the Outreach (except for 2 off-list requests of Morine and Ednah) So if you still think you could volunteer for the same, Kindly get in touch. ==KU Outreach Updates== So I have been in touch with the KU Administration over the small outreach talk we owe them from last year and I managed to squeeze an appointment tomorrow 29th 2012 for the same. Looks like all is set and If you are interested in joining me for the meetup, please get in touch too. We would be having pretty the same talk to KU Students sometimes maybe next week or so similar to what we are going to deliver to Mombasa. In that regard, I would like to have somone Step in for m for th KU and possibly subsequent Outreaches as I am soon starting my Full time job and am not sure I will be better placed to coordinate all this Years Outreaches as planned. Steve is taking charge for the Egerton Outreach slated for 10th of March? Re: [Wikimedia Kenya] Saturday Photo Walk
Steve, Thanks for the comprehensive report. And Am glad you put it so in detail that whoever missed should feel "kiwaru" :-)...Just too bad you did not mention the fact that I sat on that very seat that President Roosevelt and the Prince and the Queen sat on :-) I am working on a followup email to the head of Internet Information that we were given and will loop all you guys in. A BIG thank you to all those who found time (Oliver, Alex, Steve, Chris and later Morine and Ednah) to this noble cause. Most interesting is the fact that we did NOT even have to pay for the permit from Kanjo and Police, Oliver was our permit and for that, thanks so much Oliver :-) Best, -- Limoke Oscar, ___ WikimediaKE mailing list WikimediaKE@lists.wikimedia.org https://lists.wikimedia.org/mailman/listinfo/wikimediake

Re: [Wikimedia Kenya] First Outreach 2012 to Mombasa
Waasalumu , I hope we are doing great. It has been a week since I asked for your input into the above. Since I got none, I went ahead with the plans for the same. So Wkimedia Kenya and Mozuilla Kenya had sometime last year discussed and greed on having an Outreach this year to introduce guys to our work.(https://etherpad.mozilla.org/Kenya-Mozilla-Wikimedia-Outreach and https://etherpad.mozilla.org/Kenya-Road-Trip-Institutions) For Wikimedia, we would hold a few Wiki Academies to show guys how and what it takes to create Wikipedia and hope they will be apart of it and contribute if not make good use of other Wikimedia Resources in their daily life. So the first outreach is almost here with us and I have been working on it with Alex from the Mozilla Camp and since we do not have sufficient budget and resources as Mozilla does ( I understand they really do have lots of cash for Outreach this year :-) ), we have agreed that Wikimedia Kenya will only need to cater for the boarding and travel expenses for its participants. We are still ironing out the details of hiring or finding a venue. Our audience in Mombasa will include guys from GTUG Mombasa and a few techies and developers in Mombasa and calling for a few students who would make it to the meetup. We have a liaison with the GTUG Guys in Mombasa helping with the coordination. So this is a call for anyone keen on helping or who has a presentation and teaching to do to step forward (A maximum of 3 people). Tentative dates are March 9th to 10th Your input is eagerly awaited and volunteers too Regards, -- Limoke Oscar, ___ WikimediaKE mailing list WikimediaKE@lists.wikimedia.org https://lists.wikimedia.org/mailman/listinfo/wikimediake
[Wikimedia Kenya] Outreach 2012
Hi Everyone,, I trust we are all well and the excitement and partying dust has settled following our recognition as the 39th Chapter. :-)Time to chatr way forawd and serious issues. So we all remember sometime last year we were planning for an Outreach to various campuses across Kenya to introduce students to the Culture and editing Wikipedia. Well, the first of such outreach is almost here with us and we have plans to visit a few campuses in Mombasa in early March along the Mozilla Kenya team. The details are still sketchy and I would appreciate your input and contribution into the same. You can find the Meat page for the same here : http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wikimedia_Kenya_Outreach_2012 PS: who was responsible for posting the Last Meetups minutes? Re: [Wikimedia Kenya] Board Elections
Hello, Receive Congratulations from folks from internal :-) to all of us for the effort and for the recognition as the 39th Chapter. Back to the issue at hand ( Board Elections), I would opine that we discuss all the hows and whats of carrying out the election successfully. Having it on Saturday is such a short time to prepare adequately both to the nominees and voters. See you on Sartuday.
