[Zen] Aging and Zen

2008-10-03 Thread Al
As we all get older, and some of us are a lot older, the question for
me now is this: Does Zen give you everything you want? Are you willing
to die sitting on a cushion just saying this is it? No Heaven for
you? No Nirvana? No nothing? Just worms??

[Zen] Zen and Accountability

2008-10-03 Thread Al
In Zen (and/or Chan), what is Accountability? One issue that has come
up many times over the years is that some folks think Zen is just Do
whatever you want, whenever you want, to or with whomever you want.
This philosophy goes to everything, including sex, relationships,
money, etc.

So is that what Zen is? If you ever ask, Does Zen have a position
against X, Y, or Z? The answer is usually not very clear. Is there
anything in Zen against betrayal, theft, adultery, etc??

Even if there is, what is the accountability of any person for their
sins or misdeeds or karma???

We should all vote on what is the Best Way and then agree to follow it
for one year beginning January 1, 2009.

At this point I see five possible gurus:

A) JM
B) Bill
C) Edgar
D) Roloro
E) Cid

If anyone else would like to be considered for the post of official
Zen Forum guru of 2009, please post your nominations by Friday. The

[Zen] Repression and Release

2008-10-01 Thread Al
[EMAIL PROTECTED] This was a very good poem. I mean it. I enjoyed
this little peak at your life.

One of the things that has been the most valuable to me about zen is
not to be afraid of thoughts.

I am not sure if that can be addictive though??

Sometimes I try to maintain a positive attitude and then at some
point I am acting in the passive aggressive mode because the positive
is so negative to me that I am twisted inside out.

So taking a step back and being honest about what is upsetting to me
can be a big release and then I have less tension and stress about
the situation and it is not so hard to be positive about it because I
am being positive while I acknowledge to myself what I do not like
about the situation and then I pray:

LORD, GRANT ME THE SERENITY TO ACCEPT THE THINGS I CANNOT CHANGE

THE COURAGE TO CHANGE THE THINGS I CAN

AND THE WISDOM TO KNOW THE DIFFERENCE

That WISDOM has cost me hundreds of thousands of dollars, perhaps
even more, not to mention many years, many tears, many friends, and
even some blood.

Best wishes,

Al

[Zen] Amorality Zen

2008-10-01 Thread Al
roloro1557 I'm sorry if I offended you.

You did not offend me. I always challenge blanket New Wave bullshit
statements like the one you posted. It is that mindset of anything
goes that is a betrayal of the youth of the world and I do not think
that anything goes is an appropriate philosophy of life and I am
sorry to know that you are a parent.

I am sorry that I am being offensive, but I have worked in the
juvenile social services system and I have seen many hundreds of kids
who are the victims of their parents philosophy that fucking anything
and anyone is OK and that anything is good and there is no right and
wrong.

I do not think that a life of amorality works without hurting others.

[Zen] Share Your Satori Experiences

2008-10-01 Thread Al
roloro1557 No, it wasn't a near-death experience, I had that when
I was in a car accident. It might have been a near death experience if
*I* was struck by lightning.

If you thought your child was in danger, there is plenty of
documentation of what that does to your own psychological state. I do
not have time to google that right now as I have to go to work.

I have my own story about my most profound Satori, and if we were all
honest, perhaps we all have some unusual experiences that we
personally consider to be Satori.

I applaud you for taking your heart out and sharing honestly.

I wonder if anyone else is willing to share what they think are their
most unusual Satori experiences, or perhaps just those that
were outside of the zen temple.

2008-09-30 Thread Al
roloro1557 as I said, all the overlays on my consciousness fell
away- there was no thought, no language, no nothing. The lightning
was. I was.

That is a near-death experience, similar to those where people get
incredible adrenaline rush and do superhuman things do to the
stress/excitement/fear/explosion of the moment. It is also similar to
being in the zone when doing an intense exercise.

However, there are books about near-death experiences that you might
want to read.

I think that all of those types of moments are some kind of
enlightenment. Perhaps due to adrenalin rush, or endorphins, seratonin
in the brain, or who knows.

Re: [Zen] Dear Bill

2008-07-06 Thread Al
From: Chuck Gierhart Evolution is not an act of faith. It is an act of
observation. It's story is told in the fossil record and your RNA and DNA.
The head of the Human Genome Project is a devout Christian and true believer
in stem cell research. by David Ewing Duncan (published online February 20,
2007)(http://discovermagazine.com/2007/feb/interview-francis-collins)

Francis Collins is changing the way we think about DNA. First he helped
decode the human genome. Now he oversees a research empire at the National
Human Genome Research Institute (part of the sprawling National Institutes
of Health), leading the race to find disease-causing sequences hidden in our
genes, doling out hundreds of millions in grant money each year, and
defending controversial science in the charged politics of Washington, D.C.

A devoted Christian, Collins defends evolution and embryonic stem cell
research in his new book, The Language of God: A Scientist Presents Evidence
for Belief (Free Press, 2006). He dismisses religious extremists and
scientist-atheists as equally shrill and believes that both sides push their
beliefs on a public who prefers that science and religion remain separate.

In college Collins found biology boring and trained as a chemist, only to
become a physician and then a famed gene hunter at the University of
Michigan at Ann Arbor, where he identified the gene for cystic fibrosis and
helped find the gene for Huntington's disease. He blazed into the public eye
in the late 1990s during the bruising competition to sequence the human
genome; he ran the $3.7 billion public effort while J. Craig Venter
conducted a parallel effort using private funds. After much scientific
mudslinging, the two sides declared a tie in 2000 and were feted jointly at
the White House.

Moving beyond mere code breaking, Collins has been focusing on the recently
completed International HapMap Project, a genomic atlas of clusters of
disease-causing snippets of DNA. The project catalogs human variability and
identifies patterns of genes that are linked to health and disease.

DISCOVER contributing editor Duncan spent an afternoon with Collins in his
offices at the NIH. Collins, a lanky man in well-worn beige jeans and a
flannel shirt, has an aw-shucks breeziness about him-an ease that belies his
status as one of the most powerful scientists in the world.

In your book, you stake a middle ground between the view that there is only
science and the idea that an intelligent being directs human affairs. How do
you strike a balance?
We live in an unfortunate time when the Richard Dawkins crowd says religion
is silly, and other people say evolution is silly. Most people don't agree
with either extreme. The dominant position in the past for most working
scientists was a middle ground: You use the tools of science to understand
how nature works, but you also recognize that there are things outside of
nature, namely God, for which the tools of science are not well designed to
derive truth. The middle-ground position is that there is more than one way
to find truth, and a fully formed effort to try to answer the most important
questions would not limit you to the kinds of questions that science can
answer, especially the eternal one: Why are we all here, anyway?

You're a born-again Christian who suggests that therapeutic cloning could be
acceptable. Some other devout people consider it fundamentally immoral. What
do you see differently?
There is a difference between doing research on an embryo that was generated
by sperm and egg coming together, which is the way human beings are created,
versus the very bizarre laboratory phenomenon of taking a nucleus from a
skin cell or the udder cell of a sheep and putting it into an environment
that takes it back in time to its stem cell state. In public discourse,
they're both called embryos. Even though the somatic cell nuclear transfer
approach is a very different biological phenomenon, in many people's minds
it has been all blurred together. As a result, we've really missed out on a
chance for a much more thoughtful, nuanced discussion, and we're still
trying to recover from that.

What kind of reaction has your book provoked?
I didn't know quite what to expect, but the response has been amazing. Most
of the large volume of letters and e-mails I have received have been
encouraging and positive, both from the scientific community and from the
religious community. A few scientists have written that it is inappropriate
for a scientist to write about harmony with faith, because they think that
faith already has too much power in the United States. A few conservative
Christians have been stridently critical about my endorsement of theistic
evolution. Most heartwarming have been a few dozen very personal messages
from individuals who had been struggling with whether they were forced to
make a choice between science and faith and were relieved to hear that it is
possible to embrace both.

Pacific Ocean or a rock, no answer is possible. You can describe how these
things interact with their environment or the benefit we derive from them
but thatâ?Ts not the same as a purpose. To ask what purpose these things
have is a loaded question. The question itself implies that a supreme being

So you think that Zen is Atheism? That everything is a product of blind luck
and evolution? That one single cell amoeba kept evolving over billions of
years into incredibly complex strands of DNA for millions of completely
unconnected creatures?

Isn't Evolution an act of faith? Isn't the belief in no intelligent higher

-From: BillSmart@ This is my theory.

Dear Bill,

One of the problems that I have had had with Christianity is that every
minister has their own theory, and they claim everyone else is going to
hell.

At least the Catholics usually stick to one dogma, but I find the services
to meaningless. Catholic Mass is non-stop song and dance. It is like a
variety show from the 1970s.

So then I go to Buddhism/Zen, and find it is more or less the same shit,
different day. Everyone wants to create their own Nirvana, Samsara, etc.

Your theory may sound right to you, but when you die and hit the void,
Heaven, etc., or whatever it is, I would rather show up with something that
has its basis in recognized scripture.

It is like going to Disney World with Master-Card and Visa as opposed to
bringing a pad of I-O-U-s and hoping Disney will accept it.

  Al, Not exactly.

I'm not saying 'do as I say'. I'm only offering my opinion. I'm also not
saying 'do as I do'. I'm just offering my insight on what I do, especially
when that is or appears contradictory with what say.

But then I'm not the one who claims to be the reincarnation of a Buddhist

precepts to wealthy Westerners. I'm not the one who is coordinating or at
least encouraging a people to fight for their attachments. I'm not the one who
lives in exile and travels around the world like a rock star with thousands of
fawning sycophants. I'm not the one who is an inspiration to the intellectual
giants like Richard Gere, and the female movie start (whose name escapes me
right now) that voiced her Buddhist opinion that the earthquake in China just
might be KARMA's way to punish the Chinese people for their mistreatment of
Tibet. Now there would be someone worthy of you doing what they say, but not
doing what they do.

2008-02-19 Thread Al
From: cid830 I don't care if you are the Moderator. That is the sad
part... for NINE YEARS? And you seemed to have not learned a thing. I think
you just feed off of making light of nice people's posts.

That is your perception and you are entitled to your fantasy. Irony and
comedy are too different things. I don't seek peace, I seek passion. I see
people from my perspective, where the rubber hits the road and the
well-meaning hearts and open-minds are usually a lot of nothing and a waste
of space.

My experience with well-meaning hearts and open minds is that those are the
biggest hypocrites on earth, the blight on everything that is good in the
world, and the weak links in any substantial change. The well-meaning hearts
and the open minds never get it done. Look at the great era of the 1960s.
All the well-meaning hearts and open minds became the most corrupt
generation on earth. They are your politicians, lawyers, stock brokers,
accountants, etc. When the well meaning hearts and open minds have to choose
between helping others and a gold Rolex or a Lexus, what do you think
happens?

I think enlightenment is like any other kool-aid. If you buy into the
concept, that is half the battle. The other half is finding people that will
tell you what you want to hear. Real enlightenment does not need you for
verification. It is real. There really are people who have never heard of
zen and have no interest in being enlightened who are enlightened.

[Zen] Helping Others

2008-02-19 Thread Al
From: BillSmartI was introduced in the 1960's by a couple of Japanese zen
masters living very modestly in Los Angeles,

Whatever happened to those kind of people? I remember back when people did
favors and helped others without regard for themselves and that went around
and around and when you helped someone it did not feel like you were being
played or like someone was getting over on you.

I think when I realized that a lot of people were getting over on me it
changed my perception of life drastically and I cannot say that I have
gotten over that. Self-realization can be a bad thing (I am being ironic
now, for those who need Cliffs Notes).

[Zen] Call For: Roshis, Monks, Teachers

2008-02-16 Thread Al
In the land of the blind, the one-eyed is king.

Here at zen forum, it is the blind leading the blind. One of the thoughts
that I had back when this forum began was that it would be cool for a
visiting zen master to join up and participate.

Unfortunately, we have gotten a few of those, like Roshi Joriki-Baker and
they would only post once every six months.

Then we got a couple of monks and they were always complaining about
everybody and everything. Compared to the monks, I was like a ray of
sunshine.

So the monks went away, and now it is even worse. There is nobody on board
with any kind of certified, bona-fide knowledge about anything.

So I am putting out a call for Roshis, monks, senseis and anyone else with a
certified diploma, degree, vocational school certificate or other
documentation of zen study.

I am not talking about anonymous entities with websites, I am talking about
real, verifiable zen teachers.

The pay will be very good for your soul if you have one. Deposits will be
made into the Great Void.

Applications being accepted ASAP.

google/wikipedia it, you will find it.

It is all explained in the Eddie Murphy movie, The Golden Child.

From: Bill Smart I wish the Dalai Lama well in all of his endeavors,
but in the political case in Tibet, to me, he's just another ethnic
nationalist.

The Dolly Lame-O has gotten thousands of people killed while he sips mint
julips in Europe and drives around in a limousine and lives in a mansion.

I certainly respect that he has taken the path which he believes is the best
for his people, but the bottom line is that he has lived a life of great
luxury while instigating others via long-distance and getting many of his
followers killed for a cause that he certainly is not willing to die for.

Re: [Zen] Ash Wednesday

2008-02-07 Thread Al
From: Cynth Chinese Army would have him assassinated and they'd
choose his replacement to control the people of Tibet.

They chose his replacement anyway. Lama is the leader of a government in
exile, which is a lot like being the gal standing outside your former
employment, picketing after you have been fired.

The bottom line is that if the Dalai Lama were to walk the walk, he would be
in Tibet. Whether he would be a martyr or not? Odds are that he would be
imprisoned. Nelson Mandela spent 24 years in prison for what he believed.
Jesus Christ gave up his life for what he believed. So did Ghandhi and a
whole laundry list of religious figures throughout history. The pages of
history are colored with the blood of martyrs.

Dolly Lama is certainly not one of them. He prefers paid speaking
engagements to martyrdom. Dolly sits in his mansion sipping mint julips
while anonymous monks get martyred on his behalf. A real hero.

US Prez GW Bush went to Saudi Arabia to visit his fellow billionaire's horse

they have any obligation to stop earning more money. I just wonder if there
ever comes a day when they just get tired of counting their billions??

Your already way ahead of Zatoichi. Seriously, every Japanese movie about
the medieval era seems to show a very harsh society of the HAVES and the

audiences, I imagine those films must reflect the popular view of the
history of that era.

Lots of wisdom to be found in fighting the oppression of the overlords.

Re: [Zen] Re: My search for a Zen Teacher

2007-12-24 Thread Al
From: Endymion I'm deeply engrossed in the teachings of the San Sa T'u
Cha School. I love the three main teachers: Zen Masters La Ji, Mou, and (my
favorite) K'ih Li Chou. I've written before about Gutei's one-finger Zen.
Zen Master Mou was most famous for his two-finger Zen. Many is the time he
would kindly use his two-fingers to open the Dharma Eyes of his two brothers
to grant them immense kensho experiences.

Three Stooges Zen illuminated my early life. Now I prefer the more subtle
Bonanza school of Zen. Little Joe-san, Hoss-san, Adam-san, and Ben-sensei
seem to have wisdom beyond their era. Of course, the master of all masters
is Zatoichi (for me). If you have never ventured into the Ichi School
(pronounced ITCHY), then you are really missing the best of the best.
Zatoichi made about 20-25 movies and I believe there was even a TV series in
Japan. I have not seen the remake of 2003, but I heard it was a good movie
too.

[Zen] Personal e-mails

2007-12-21 Thread Al
I have gotten personal emails from three people on this forum, and I thought
we could all learn something from sharing.

One person kept sending me emails asking if Bill was insane.

Another person sent me an email telling me that I am a moron.

Another person wanted to know how I was doing. Like usual, when I responded
to that person I never heard from that person again.

Three dysfunctional people emailing another dysfunctional person. Not sure
what is the lesson to be learned, but I thought it was dysfunctional enough
to share it with the group.

Perhaps we should change the name to Dysfunctional Forum? I have noticed
that a lot of people who seek the enlightenment of Zen are pretty much
avoiding real human contact in many cases (not all).

Re: [Zen] Caveat Emptor

2007-12-19 Thread Al
I just want to add that this is a FORUM. It is for people to discuss ideas
and exchange them.

I have been getting some personal emails from various members who I do not
know, and I am not a zen teacher so I feel uncomfortable engaging in
personal discussions about zen. I have not been trained in zen, and I just
enjoy it. If you have a thought or an opinion or a concern, post it to the
Zen Forum. That is what it is for.

We have never had any casualties here in the past three years or so since
the great flame wars of the two zen monks versus me. Then there was the
Jarvis incident. You can't make an omellette without breaking a few eggs.
This forum has been in existence since 1999. It is generally a nice place,
but like any neighborhood, it depends on the tenants for its character. We
are all renters here in life and in the zen forum.

From: daniel sherwood I'll stop practicing by myself. May I ask why? Or
would that be a violation as well?

You need to check the archives for the story of Jarvis, the 4th Moderator
who was executed in Lower Tibet by the Chinese Government in response to
complaints from Bill and other members.

We take Zen and the posting of messages very seriously here. As a suburb of
Tibet, this group falls under the jurisdiction of China and they monitor the
messages and won't hesitate to deal severely with anyone that violates the
TOS.

The Jarvis matter was a dark chapter in the collective history of this
group. We would like to think that we have moved forward since then.

[Zen] Thank You To Everyone

2007-10-22 Thread Al
Sometime in July, it was eight years ago that I started this group.

I have not had much to say. I am very far from enlightened and I often learn
more from reading others ideas.

When this group was posting regularly, I used to often stir up debates and
discussions by having some kind of outrageous remark that got others
motivated.

I enjoy when the group is active, but I do not want to post comments for the
sake of stirring up discussion.

I want to thank everyone that has ever joined this group and participated.
Some have given a lot of time and energy, and I hope their efforts are
always resounding the good karma to everyone. I do not think that I have
made much progress over the past eight years on my path, but I have enjoyed
the ride.

Thank you to everyone.

Re: [Zen] Re: Detach from form

2007-09-15 Thread Al
From: donald hwong Contentment is not satisfaction and not joy.
Contentment is a state of want-nothing. if we could put our best foot
forward to let go our
reaction to the effects of all existing forms, not be affected by it,
just accept as is, we end our suffering.

If we want nothing, then why will we want to put our best foot forward? I
think if Buddhism had become the predominant religion of the world, we would
all be living in huts and caves right now.

That might not be a bad thing, but to some degree buddhism is demotivating
and defuses desire, ambition, determination, perseverence, and many other
qualities that are essential for success in society. Is Buddhism for people
who are vegetables, or is it just a tool to reduce stress?

2006-12-21 Thread Al
From: Bill Smart I celebrate every day.

What a politically correct Zen answer. No doubt you often get nominated for
Student of the Week at your Zen Temple, and have won many times.

I can just envision you every day at the temple, first to arrive, your robes
always sharply pressed and immaculate, your Zen beanie's propeller always
into the wind, a bright smile to every sensei, followed by a humble bow.

But there is a little known dark side to your sunny disposition. The side
that you keep hidden from everyone, including the Zen Forum.

Soon all shall be revealed. With every post, you let a little crack of
sunshine into those dark corners.

I have gotten links to videos/audios on some websites that require people to
register in order to see/hear them, and my experience is that you get about
a million pop-up ads and re-directs.

If it isn't posted on YouTube.com or a similarly website that does not
require registration, I would suggest that you bypass the offering, it is
not worth the hassles.

Tony, I guess to an idiot that wouldn't matter tho Huh?

This isn't a secret society. If you thought you were joining the Masons or
the Shriners, then you are in the wrong place.

The idea of spreading the Dharma is that you try to get the message out to
the rest of the world. That Google, Yahoo, and anyone else can access our
discussions is a great blessing.

Re: [Zen] Re: M o n d o

2006-05-25 Thread Al
From: Bill Smart (I wish Travis was still with us and not wandering
around lost and disembowled somewhere in the cybernet great beyond.

You meant Jarvis? Sadly (for him), his fate was sealed.

The Zen Forum takes moderating seriously, and anyone who accepts the job
must be willing to make the supreme sacrifice if his or her performance is
deemed unworthy.

Thus, ego must be extinguished; and so all moderators must take the name of
Al. This anonymity is a symbol of our humility.

So we all work as one Al. Where one Al ends, and the next Al begins, only
Buddha can tell, as usually the seppuku ritual is carried out in secrecy.

However, because Jarvis had gotten so out of control (and had refused to use
the traditional name of Al); a public example was made so that all the Als
would know that there is no room for duality in Zen.

Let no one mention Jarvis again. Hopefully he has gone on to the great void
or perhaps he has already begun to turn the Dharma Wheel reincarnated as a
flea.

The New Al

[Zen] The Trial of Jarvis

2006-05-17 Thread Al
Today, the Council of Zen Lists met to discuss the matter of Jarvis. The
Council of Ten is composed of the Moderators and Owners of the Top Ten Zen
lists all over the world.

For about six months now, he has been moderator of the Zen Forum.

His early days as Moderator featured numerous topical posts with peaceful and
harmonious discussions. However, his performance has been slipping as of late.
On more than one occasion, complaints were filed with the Jarvis has taken a
harsh tone towards various other members.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Council_of_Ten

So the Council convened to review the accusations against Jarvis, and this is
what transpired:

First, Jarvis was summoned to the sanctuary of the Zen Council, located at the
Shaolin Temple at an undisclosed location somewhere in the Far East.

The Delegates from the worldwide coalition of Zen Lists convened at the temple
also.

Jarvis was confronted, and the charges against him were read into the Official
Blog of the Zen Forum.

After the charges were read into the record, the judges were duly appointed,
and a jury of monks was selected, and then the trial was convened.

The Judgment was rendered.

Four of the monks on the jury briefly discussed their decision with reporters
from Hong Kong and Tokyo after the verdict was read. The Council had decided
that Jarvis' actions could be tolerated. He was forthwith removed from his
position as Moderator.

Following the tradition of the Zen Forum list, the old moderator was given the
option of committing seppuku or being executed. Jarvis chose the former option,
sparing the Zen Council any negative publicity.

Afterwards, the new candidates were reviewed:

Many qualified candidates were considered by the Council to replace Jarvis as
the Moderator.

Finally, after lenghty discussion and deliberation, Kamandi-san was chosen to
be the new Moderator of the Zen Forum! So now a new era begins!
