[cobirds] RMBO Chatfield Banding Station
Hi CoBirders, Today was opening day at the Chatfield Banding Station and we had a pretty typical late April day. We caught 9 birds in the banding station nets, 8 new, plus a return Song Sparrow that was banded in 2007 and has been a regular visitor ever since. We are trying to get a handle on the Nature Center/feeder birds, so we caught some birds there as well - 11 White-crowned Sparrows, a return Downy from last year and a White-breasted Nuthatch banded in 2007. (Both the Downy and the Nuthatch were originally banded in a station net, not at the feeder area.) So, here are the totals: Downy Woodpecker 1 return, banded 2010 White-breasted Nuthatch 1 return, banded 2007 Hermit Thrush 1 Virginia's Warbler 1 Myrtle Warbler 4 Spotted Towhee 1 Song Sparrow 1 new, 1 return, banded 2007 (probable pair; caught in same net; male in breeding condition) Gambel's White-crowned Sparrow 11 We will be open every day except May 20-21, weather permitting, through Memorial Day. Look forward to seeing many of you! Hi COBirders, Another quiet early spring day at Chatfield. Finished 2 days of training for RMBO and Audubon Naturalists; school groups start tomorrow. We continued to welcome back bird friends from previous seasons (or maybe it's the other way around.some of our recaps likely never left Chatfield!); 4 of the 10 new birds caught today were banded in a prior year. Here's the 10: Downy Woodpecker 1 Black-capped Chickadee 2 new, 1 return (banded 2010) House Wren (FOS) 1 return (banded 2007, recaught in 08, 09, 10) Hermit Thrush 1 American Robin 1 Spotted Towhee 1 return (banded 2010) Song Sparrow 1 return (banded 2007, recaught 08) Gambel's White-crowned Sparrow 1 Had our first bit of sun today; hoping for more tomorrow! [cobirds] RMBO Chatfield Banding Station Report 4/30
Hi COBirders, We arrived to a winter wonderland this morning - sunshine, a crystal clear blue sky, and SNOW (29 degrees). We spent close to 2 hours getting the nets defrosted and open. Between the Nature Center and the banding station, we caught 8 new birds (plus a few others that we had caught in recent days) to share with our Saturday visitors that ranged from a cub scout troop to CSU ornithology students whose professor had offered extra credit if they visited the banding station. The 8 new captures included 2 not uncommon birds that were nevertheless first timers for Chatfield, a Mourning Dove and a Western Scrub-jay, bringing the total species caught since 2004 to 84: Mourning Dove 1 Western Scrub-jay 1 Hermit Thrush 1 Orange-crowned Warbler 1 Yellow-rumped Warbler (Audubon) 1 Gambel's White-crowned Sparrow 1 Red-winged Blackbird 1 Black-headed Cowbird 1 return (banded 2010, caught at the feeder nets both times) Meredith Meredith McBurney Rocky Mountain Bird Observatory Chatfield Banding Station -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups Colorado Birds group. Continued slow today..in addition to relatively few birds around, we also had a pair of Sharp-shinned Hawks looking for brunch, which kept those birds that were around in hiding. Finally caught the female mid-morning, and that kept us and visitors entertained for awhile! Sharp-shinned Hawk 1 Black-capped Chickadee 1 return (banded 2007), 1 recapture (we caught her last Monday; she came back today to show off her newly acquired brood patch) Hermit Thrush 2 Virginia's Warbler 1 Yellow-rumped Warbler 1 Time for things to pick up! [cobirds] RMBO Chatfield Banding Station, the weekend and Monday
We had a weekend with over 100 visitors and few birds (single digits both days if we don't count the Nature Center feeder birds). Total for Saturday and Sunday (combined): House Wren 6 American Robin 1 return (Banded 2010) Yellow Warbler 1 return (Male, banded 2005, recaught 07, 08, 09, 10. Common Yellowthroat 1 Wilson's Warbler 1 Lincoln's Sparrow 1 Gambel's White Crowned Sparrow 2 Mountain White Crowned Sparrow 1 Red-winged Blackbird 7 Brown-headed Cowbird 1 House Finch 1 American Goldfinch 1 Then, today, under cloudy skies and cooler weather, we had our best day so far, capturing 25 birds, 13 species before the wind picked up and forced us to close. A great day to be a kid in the school group that visited! Downy Woodpecker 1 Black-capped Chickadee 1 House Wren 6 Ruby-crowned Kinglet (FOS) 1 Hermit Thrush 1 Orange-crowned Warbler 3 Yellow Warbler 1 new, 2 returns (Both banded in 2010. One of these, a female, was in the net right next to the 7 year old mentioned above - and recaught but not recounted here) MacGillivray's Warbler (FOS) 1 Common Yellowthroat 1 Wilson's Warbler 3 Spotted Towhee 1 Lincoln's Sparrow 2 Brown-headed Cowbird 1 Meredith McBurney Rocky Mountain Bird Observatory Chatfield Banding Station -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups Colorado Birds group. For the first time this season, the Catbirds were competing with the Red-winged Blackbirds for the noisiest birds in the area; we had the first of season in the net within minutes of opening. Totals for the day: House Wren 2 new, 1 return (banded 2009) Hermit Thrush 1 Gray Catbird (FOS) 2 Orange-crowned Warbler 1 Yellow Warbler 1 return (banded 2010) Lincoln's Sparrow 1 Gambel's White-crowned Sparrow 1 Red-winged Blackbird 2 Brown-headed Cowbird 2 We were hoping that yesterday's higher numbers would continue, but as you can see we once again we dropped back down into the 'teens. It will be interesting to see what the change in weather brings. (And, just a reminder, if it is raining, we will be closed.) [cobirds] RMBO Chatfield Banding Station Report, 5/13/11
After being rained out for 2 days, it was great to be banding again, on a crisp, cool day that turned sunny after about 8 a.m. Perhaps not as busy as we were hoping/expecting, it still was our best day this season, catching 30 new birds. Also the highest number of species this spring, at 17, with 6 first of season birds. For the DU ornithology class that was visiting, it was like Christmas (or the final exam!)...who knew what the next bag would hold! Breakdown for the day: Dusky Flycatcher (FOS) 5 Gray Flycatcher (F - and probably only - OS) 1 Warbling Vireo (FOS) 1 House Wren 2 Blue-gray Gnatcatcher 2 Gray Catbird 1 new, 1 return (banded 09) Orange-crowned Warbler 1 Virginia's Warbler 2 Yellow Warbler 1 new, 1 return (banded 08, recaptured 09, 10) Audubon's Warbler 2 MacGillivray's Warbler 1 Wilson's Warbler 2 Green-tailed Towhee (FOS) 2 Chipping Sparrow (FOS) 2 Brewer's Sparrow (FOS) 1 Lincoln's Sparrow 1 Mountain White-crowned Sparrow 1 Meredith McBurney Rocky Mountain Bird Observatory Chatfield Banding Station -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups Colorado Birds group. [cobirds] RMBO Chatfield Banding Station Update, 5/14/11
On this very cold, gray, almost but not quite rainy, birdy Saturday, we had the second best banding day ever at this station! 73 banded, 6 returns = 79. Thanks to Andy Doll, DMNS Ornithology Fellow, for his help banding, and the great crew of volunteers who got birds out of the nets while Andy and I talked with the MANY visitors (probably more humans than birds) out enjoying the frigid weather and super birds. And the Kingerys, who were out with a group doing the spring bird count, for sharing their bird knowledge. Great day! Dusky Flycatcher 8 Gray Flycatcher 1 Warbling Vireo 1 House Wren 6 Blue-gray Gnatcatcher 3 Swainson's Thrush (FOS) 1 Hermit Thrush 1 Gray Catbird 3 new, 1 return (banded 08, recaught 09, 10) Orange-crowned Warbler 4 Virginia's Warbler 4 Yellow Warbler 5 new, 3 returns (1 banded in 09, 2 in 10) Yellow-rumped Warbler, Myrtle 1 Yellow-rumped Warbler, Audubon 9 Northern Waterthrush (FOS) 1 Common Yellowthroat 4 Wilson's Warbler 1 Yellow-breasted Chat (FOS) 2 returns (1 banded 09, 1 in 10) Green-tailed Towhee 1 Spotted Towhee 1 Chipping Sparrow 1 Brewer's Sparrow 5 Lincoln's Sparrow 6 Gambel's White-crowned Sparrow 5 Red-winged Blackbird 1 We'll be back tomorrow, weather permitting! [cobirds] RMBO Chatfield Banding Station Update, 5/16/11
Just to summarize our 2011 banding experience to date: Almost 2 1/2 weeks with mostly single digit days, waiting for the vegetation to green up and the birds to arrive. Then rained out for 2 days; then 79 birds; then rained out another day; then 70 birds. Our 2nd and 3rd highest days ever in what was shaping up to be a very slow year. The birds waited for their food to be available, and now they are coming through in large numbers between rainstorms! Great fun for us and our visitors! Dusky Flycatcher 15 House Wren 2 Blue-gray Gnatcatcher 2 Swainson's Thrush 2 Hermit Thrush 6 Gray Catbird 4 Orange-crowned Warbler 2 Virginia's Warbler 1 Yellow Warbler 2 new, 5 returns (1 banded in 2008, 2 in 2009, 2 in 2010; each one has been caught annually since it was banded) Yellow-rumped Warbler 8 Blackpoll Warbler 1 (2nd at this station; caught one in 2008) Northern Waterthrush 2 MacGillivray's Warbler 1 Common Yellowthroat 4 Wilson's Warbler 1 Yellow-breasted Chat 2 new, 1 return (banded 2010) Green-tailed Towhee 1 Spotted Towhee 1 Lincoln's Sparrow 2 Mountain White-crowned Sparrow 1 Red-winged Blackbird 2 American Goldfinch 2 A reminder: We are open Tues, Wed and Thurs; and then we are CLOSED Fri and Sat. We and the Tuesday Birders had a fun if wet day. We caught about 40 birds before the thunder, lightning and rain started about 9 a.m. We ran around, pulled the nets closed, and then all huddled under our canopy and looked at birds! With Yellow Warblers and Catbirds in double digits for the first day, there is finally some hope that our summer residents will come in reasonable numbers. Yellows and House Wrens so far are well below the numbers we've had in the last couple of years. Had another good day for late May banding, with 39 banded, 3 returns: Western Wood-pewee 1 Least Flycatcher 1 Dusky Flycatcher 2 House Wren 1 Swainson's Thrush 5 Hermit Thrush 1 Gray Catbird 9 new, 2 returns (1 banded 2008, 1 in 2010) Yellow Warbler 9 new, 1 return (banded 2010) American Redstart (FOS) 1 Common Yellowthroat 4 Green-tailed Towhee 1 Lincoln's Sparrow 3 Mountain White-crowned Sparrow 1 Open through Memorial Day, weather permitting. [cobirds] RMBO Chatfield Banding Station Report, 5/27-28/11
A busy couple of days for us. Friday we banded as usual in the morning, catching 35 birds, and then banded in the evening for a special event for our partner organizations and some donors, catching 8 new birds along with a number of repeats (birds already counted this spring). Total for the day was 43: Downy Woodpecker 1 Willow Flycatcher 1 Least Flycatcher 1 Dusky Flycatcher 4 Northern Rough-winged Swallow (FOS) 1 White-breasted Nuthatch 1 House Wren 1 Swainson's Thrush 4 Hermit Thrush 1 Gray Catbird 4 Yellow Warbler 8 new, 2 returns (1 banded 2007, 1 2009) Chestnut-sided Warbler 1 (2nd for the season, and 2nd ever at this station) Common Yellowthroat 2 Wilson's Warbler 2 Yellow-breasted Chat 1 Lincoln's Sparrow 3 Mountain White-crowned Sparrow 1 Rose-breasted Grosbeak (FOS) 1 Black-headed Grosbeak 2 Red-winged Blackbird 1 Today, Saturday, was very active with both birds and visitors. It was a typical sunny late May day.The female Yellow Warblers are finally back in large numbers, and they and the males were dashing about everywhere. Total take for the day was 46 birds: Willow Flycatcher 5 Least Flycatcher 1 House Wren 2 Gray Catbird 3 Yellow Warbler 21 new, 1 return (banded 2010) American Redstart 3 MacGillivray's Warbler 1 Common Yellowthroat 3 Yellow-breasted Chat 1 Lincoln's Sparrow 4 American Goldfinch 1 I know there have been a lot of unusual/rare warblers reported this spring. We've only had 1 Blackpoll and 2 Chestnut-sided that would fit into that category, but the numbers of a few other relatively infrequent species have been well above normal. 5 American Redstarts (6 total in 7 prior years), Northern Waterthrush 6 (4 total in 7 prior years) and Virginia's Warblers 11 (14 total in 7 prior years). Only 2 more days.Sunday and Monday! [cobirds] RMBO Barr Lake Banding Station Update, 9/20/09
About a dozen bird lovers spent a beautiful last Sunday of summer at the Barr Banding Station. We welcomed the first junco and towhees (a Spotted and a Green-tailed) of the season, and at least one visitor noted that the Yellow-rumpeds were in the neighborhood if not in our nets. A leisurely day, we banded the following: House Wren 2 Hermit Thrush 2 Orange-crowned Warbler 2 Yellow Warbler 1 Wilson's Warbler 6 Green-tailed Towhee 1 Spotted Towhee 1 Clay-colored Sparrow 1 Lincoln's Sparrow 3 Pink-sided Junco 1 Station will be closed tomorrow, 9/21, then open every day (weather permitting) through 9/29. [cobirds] RMBO Barr Lake Station, 9/25-27/09
We had nice weather on Friday and Saturday, and capture numbers on the good side for this season - which means well below average for a typical season at Barr. Friday we banded 17 birds and recaught a Gambel's White-crowned Sparrow that we first banded in 2007. Saturday we banded 22. Sunday was warmer and dismal; we banded 9 birds and closed early when the wind picked up. Hoping for better bird results and slightly cooler weather this coming week. Total birds banded for the 3 days: Downy Woodpecker 3 Western Wood-pewee 3 Rock Wren 1 House Wren 1 Ruby-crowned Kinglet 1 Hermit Thrush 3 Orange-crowned Warbler 14 Myrtle Warbler 1 Audubon's Warbler 4 Townsend's Warbler 1 Wilson's Warbler 5 Yellow-breasted Chat 1 Chipping Sparrow 2 Song Sparrow 1 Lincoln's Sparrow 1 Gambel's White-crowned Sparrow 1 Oregon Junco 1 Pink-sided Junco 4 We will be closed Wednesday, 9/30. [cobirds] RMBO Barr Banding Station, 10/2/09
It was an icy morning and the birds were in hiding. Our visitors today, a high school biology class, learned what it was like to be a field biologist on a REALLY SLOW day. Total captured for the day, including 3 recaps, was 7 birds, 3 of which were caught in the final net run at 10:30 when we finally gave up and closed. New birds included 2 Ruby-crowned Kinglets, 1 Lincoln’s Sparrow, 1 Oregon Junco. Hoping for better weather and more birds this weekend. [cobirds] RMBO Barr Banding Update, 10/14-15
After being closed of 4 days because of drizzly, cold weather, we've had 2 really good fall days. We banded 40 birds (31 of which were Yellow-rumped Warblers) on Wednesday, making it one of the best days of a very slow season. Total captured including recaps was 54. Today was slower but still pretty good; with 24 new birds. Total new birds for the 2 days: Downy Woodpecker 2 Red-breasted Nuthatch 1 Brown Creeper 1 Wilson's Warbler 1 Myrtle Warbler 11 Audubon's Warbler 28 Chipping Sparrow 2 Song Sparrow 2 Gamble's White-crowned Sparrow 4 Oregon Junco 6 Pink-sided Junco 6 Just 2 more banding days this fall. [cobirds] RMBO Barr Banding, Final Day, 10/17/09
Saturday the birds taunted us one final time in this very strange banding season. We weren’t even scheduled to be open; our final day was originally the 16th, and we stayed open the 17th because of a DFO Field Trip. Then, had the biggest day of a VERY SLOW season; we banded 51 birds, 22 of which we caught as we were closing the nets! At about 12:30 p.m., after our visitors had left, 3 volunteers and I were closing nets. Got to nets 20 and 21, and there were 15 birds waiting – Yellow-rumped Warblers, Juncos, Chipping Sparrows and a Downy Woodpecker. Breakdown for the day: Downy Woodpecker 3 Hermit Thrush 4 Myrtle Warbler 4 Audubon’s Warbler 7 Chipping Sparrow 4 Clay-colored Sparrow 1 Song Sparrow 3 White-throated Sparrow 1 (ah, yes, the only one of the season!) Gamble’s White-crowned Sparrow 2 Slate-colored Junco 3 Oregon Junco 7 Pink-sided Junco 11 Junco (unidentified race) 1 The last 4 days (after 4 days of cold, drizzly, no banding weather) we averaged 33 birds per day; for the whole season 17 per day. I’m guessing when I review the entire season, we will see that the differences this year are with certain species. For example, far fewer Wilson’s Warblers, but probably a normal or greater number of Yellow-rumpeds. I’ll keep you posted. Many thanks to Joanne Haller for volunteering to run the nets the extra day, to Francis and Joyce Commercon for staying until the UNbitter end to record all those last-minute birds, and, of course, to DFO for having a field trip that day! I’ll be running the RMBO Station at Chatfield this spring, starting the last week in April. Have a great winter and I’ll look forward to seeing some of you in the spring! [cobirds] RMBO Spring Banding at Chatfield
Hi Birders, Spring is here, and we will soon be banding! RMBO, in partnership with Audubon Society of Greater Denver, will again run its banding station at the Audubon Nature Center at Chatfield. We will be open from Monday, April 26 through Memorial Day, May 31. We will be open every day, weather permitting, except for May 13 -15, from about 6:30 a.m. until noon, depending on the birds. You are welcome to visit at any time. We have school groups many weekdays, usually arriving at 9 a.m or later, so come early if you are looking for more birds and smaller crowds! Weekends tend to be very busy but great for families; the Nature Center is open and ASGD has activities for kids of all ages. To get to the station, go to the Audubon Nature Center parking lot. From C470 Wadsworth Blvd., go south on Wadsworth about 4.4 miles. Turn left on Waterton Road. Turn left into the first parking lot at the Audubon Center sign. The path to the station starts at the far north end of the parking lot. Walk more or less east, staying to the right of the restrooms and then the pond. When you reach the far east end of the pond where the trail splits, stay on the trail as it goes to the right. The station is the 2 picnic tables in a big, open, fenced area. (Enter through the gate, which is unlocked when the station is open.) More information, including info about the Chico Station, is posted on the RMBO website at www.rmbo.org http://www.rmbo.org/ . If you have specific questions, feel free to e-mail me directly. Looking forward to a great banding season! [cobirds] RMBO Chatfield Banding Station Dress Rehearsal
Hi Birders, We banded a little today as we finished setting up nets and clearing the area. Caught 8 birds. First bird of the season was a White-crowned Sparrow. Then, species came in pairs – American Robins (both males), Black-capped Chickadees (sex unknown), Downy Woodpeckers (both males), Spotted Towhees (1 male, 1 female; only the female was caught; the male stayed nearby, complaining loudly). The spring contests for territory and mates are underway! One of the Robins was a recap from last year; one of the Downys was banded in 2008, recaught in 2009. Only spring migrants that we saw/heard was a flock of Yellow-rumped Warblers. Open officially for the season starting tomorrow. Come visit! [cobirds] RMBO Chatfield Banding Station, Apr 30-May 1
Friday was a good day (14 banded; 2 returns from prior years); Saturday was slow (5 banded). We are catching most of our birds in just a few nets where the bushes have leafed out and/or are flowering. Most foliage just beginning to sprout leaves. We caught one new species for the banding station - 2 Bushtits, including a female with a brood patch. We also had an interesting Yellow-rumped intergrade - bright yellow throat turning abruptly white as it curved around the side of the head into a more Myrtle-like facial pattern. Here's the rundown for the 2 days: Downy Woodpecker 1 Black-capped Chickadee 2 Bushtit (first ever, 1 M, 1 F with brood patch) 2 House Wren (1 banded 2009) 3 Ruby-crowned Kinglet (FOS) 1 Orange-crowned Warbler (FOS) 2 Virginia's Warbler (FOS) 1 Myrtle Warbler 3 Audubon Warbler 2 Yellow-rumped Intergrade 1 Song Sparrow (banded 2007, recaught 2008) 2 White-crowned Sparrow (Mountain) 1 Meredith McBurney Bird Bander Rocky Mountain Bird Observatory 303/329-8091 (land line) 303/349-0245 (cell) -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups Colorado Birds group. [cobirds] White-crowned Sparrows - Chatfield
Matt Crooks’ e-mail about the golden-crowned White-crowned prompted me to report on our experience with WCSPs last Saturday. We set up 3 nets at the feeder area at the ASGD Nature Center and banded some birds as part of the training for Audubon’s new naturalists. It was a WCSP morning - we caught 11, 10 of them second year birds (that is, hatched last summer). WCSPs molt their crowns early in the spring, just before migrating to their summer grounds, and these guys were in various stages of that molt. If I had been naming the species last Saturday, I would have called it a Calico-crowned Sparrow - wildly different patterns of new black and white feathers, plus some retained tan and brown ones, with some of the tans and browns sticking up a bit and in some lights looking almost orange/golden. Also caught 3 Juncos - 1 each of Slate-colored, Oregon and Pink-sided. The Pink-sided had been banded at the same time last year during the same training event. Also 1 very entertaining 2nd year male Red-winged Blackbird. Banding station at Chatfield opens Saturday, April 26! [cobirds] Chatfield Station opened 4/26; caught Winter Wren 4/27
Hi COBirders, Chatfield Banding Station officially opened yesterday, Saturday, 4/26. We were open briefly on 4/25 while finishing set up, and then we open a few nets this morning until we figured out it was too cold and too windy and not going to improve much. The rewards for opening on this cold, cloudy day were a Winter Wren, first ever for this banding station, and an Audubon/Myrtle Intergrade. Otherwise, our captures have been pretty typical for early spring banding at Chatfield - relatively low total numbers but a variety of species. Here’s the breakdown for the 3 days: Black-capped Chickadee 1 new, 2 returns (caught in same net at same time, 1 banded 4/13, the other 1/12 when we did a special morning of banding at the Nature Center) House Wren 5 Winter Wren 1 American Robin 1 Yellow-rumped Warbler (Audubon) 1 Yellow-rumped Warbler (intergrade) 1 Green-tailed Towhee 1 Spotted Towhee 3 Song Sparrow 3 Lincoln’s Sparrow 1 The station will be open 7 days a week, weather permitting, EXCEPT for this coming Fri and Sat (May 2 3). We have school groups scheduled every weekday morning, usually arriving about 9 a.m. So if you want to visit when there are more birds and fewer people, come during the 7:30 - 9 a.m. window! [cobirds] RMBO Chatfield Banding Station Update, 5/14/14
Hi Birders, If we just look at summary data - 63 new birds plus some recaptures, lots of species - then 5/14 looks just like 5/13. But, on Tuesday, Amber and her crew caught the birds in less than 3 hours, while our pace was a little more leisurely. There were likely fewer birds around by Wednesday, but they remained active throughout the day. We caught our last bird (a Wilson’s Warbler) as we were finally getting closed about 2:30. A third of the birds we caught were Hermit Thrushes. This is the same species that dominated the numbers when we had the freezing rain/snow last year, except last year it was almost 2 weeks earlier. We don’t normally catch very many HETHs (the average for the 8 years prior to 2013 was 9; 2013 was 39 and 2014 will be slightly more than that), so I think we can assume it is a species that normally passes us by except when forced down by a storm. Don’t know what the 2 week difference means - either they come through over a period of time or they are later this year. The birds we caught seemed frisky, but they had almost no fat. I’m guessing they will be hanging around for a few days to gain the weight they need to continue their migration. The stars of the day were the 4 Violet-green Swallows. We don’t catch swallows very often (the insects they are after have to be flying just right - low and over land. And I think we fail to appreciate how truly gorgeous these birds are because we are usually looking at them as they streak through the sky or are perched really high on a telephone wire. The many different shades of green, violet and blue glisten in the sunlight (as brilliant as Hummers but bigger), and their feathers are unbelievably soft. Here’s the break-down of the 63 (21 species, which may be a record for number of species in 1 day at Chatfield): Least Flycatcher 1 Hammond’s Flycatcher 1 Dusky Flycather 4 Warbling Vireo 1 Violet-green Swallow 4 House Wren 2 Blue-grey Gnatcatcher 3 Hermit Thrush 21 Swainson’s Thrush 2 Orange-crowned Warbler 1 Virginia’s Warbler 2 Yellow Warbler 5 Yellow-rumped Warbler (Audubon’s) 4 MacGillivrey's Warbler 1 Common Yellowthroat 1 Wilson’s Warbler 3 Spotted Towhee 1 Lincoln’s Sparrow 3 White-crowned Sparrow, Gambel’s 1 White-crowned Sparrow, Mountain 1 Brown-headed Cowbird 1 Meredith McBurney Biologist/Bander Rocky Mountain Bird Observatory 303-329-8091 -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups Colorado Birds group. [cobirds] RMBO Chatfield Banding Station Update, 5/16/14
Number of birds caught has returned to closer to normal for Chatfield; most of the birds brought in by the storm appear to have moved on. Numbers of new birds have been in the mid-20s the last 2 days - great for education purposes because we can take time describing each bird…..good today, as we had a school group of 6th graders, a DU ornithology class and an adult beginning birder class. Whew! You can tell when we have caught something particularly exciting, because the volunteers - experienced birders all - return from the net run and grab the nearest Sibley’s. That happened today about 10 a.m. when we caught our first-ever BLUE-WINGED WARBLER. Perky little girl with a good fat supply. A break-down of the 27 new birds caught today: Dusky Flycatcher 3 House Wren 7 Hermit Thrush 1 Gray Catbird 1 Orange-crowned Warbler 2 Blue-winged Warble 1 Yellow Warbler 4 Common Yellowthroat 3 Wilson’s Warbler 1 Yellow-breasted Chat 1 Lincoln Sparrow 3 Meredith McBurney Biologist/Bander Rocky Mountain Bird Observatory 303-329-8091 -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups Colorado Birds group. [cobirds] Bird Conservancy Banding Report - Chatfield Station, 6/2/16
A beautiful day, but few birds for our final day of banding this spring. Banded just 12 birds: Swainson's Thrush 1 Gray Catbird 1 Yellow Warbler 3 Common Yellowthroat 2 Yellow-breasted Chat 1 Western Tanager 1 Spotted Towhee 1 Lincoln's Sparrow 1 American Goldfinch 1 We started the season with a Black-capped Chickadee and ended with a Yellow Warbler - pretty fitting for this station. We caught 713 individual birds - 654 new and 59 that were banded here in prior years - above our average. Many more Yellow-rumped Warblers than usual, but fewer Yellows; lots of Western Wood-pewees but very few Empids. More details when I get data recorded in a few weeks! [cobirds] Bird Conservancy Banding Report - Chatfield Station, 5/31/16
Nice third-to-last day of the season. Highlight was an Olive-sided Flycatcher. Caught in the same run as a couple of Western Wood-pewees, the OSFL seemed like a giant. And he was beautiful. The last of the Yellow Warblers are arriving - We banded 7, all but 1 were females that hatched last year (usually the last to arrive in the spring). Here's the breakdown for the day: Olive-sided Flycatcher 1 Western Wood-pewee 5 (These guys are having a great year - We've now caught twice as many as in any previous year at this station) Swainson's Thrush 1 Gray Catbird 3 Yellow Warbler 9 new, 1 banded 2013 Common Yellowthroat 1 Yellow-breasted Chat 2 Lincoln's Sparrow 1 Red-winged Blackbird 1 Open tomorrow (Wednesday) and Thursday, and then done for the season! It is almost always better to visit early in the morning. We are opening nets at 6:30, and most days will have birds back at the station by 7:15. There are school groups every weekday, arriving about 9:45. We aim to be closed by noon most days, earlier if it is very hot, very cold, or very windy. [cobirds] Bird Conservancy Banding Station Report - Chatfield, 5/3/16
The story of the first 4 days of banding at Chatfield is about Yellow-rumped Warblers. So far, almost half of the birds caught have been Yellow-rumpeds - 24 Myrtles, 25 Audubons, and 4 Intergrades for a total of 52. Not a record - that was 104 in 2009 (and a year we had a fall-out), but way more than the 3 we caught last year. And, of course, there will likely be more to come. Today, they kept us going - 14 of our 20 new birds. Here's the break-down of the 20 new and 2 returns: House Wren 1 (banded 5/13/15) Yellow-rumped Warbler, Myrtle 7 Yellow-rumped Warbler, Audubon 6 Yellow-rumped Warbler, Intergrade 1 Chipping Sparrow 1 Song Sparrow 1 White-crowned Sparrow, Gambel's 3 White-crowned Sparrow, Mountain 1 Brown-headed Cowbird 1 (banded 2014) Open daily, weather permitting, through June 2, EXCEPT for May 13, 14, and 30. It is almost always better to visit early in the morning. We are opening nets at 6:30, and most days will have birds back at the station by 7:15. There are school groups every weekday, arriving about 9:45. We aim to close by noon most days, earlier if it is very hot, very cold, or very windy. The House Wrens, which have been around since we started banding a little over a week ago, decided to jump into action today. We banded 15, 5 of which we caught a 2nd time before the morning was over. Fewer Yellow-rumped Warblers in the nets, but they continue to be around in large numbers. Just feeding higher in the trees and in areas down by the big pond where there is no space for nets. A relatively quiet day, we banding 19 plus caught one banded in a prior year: Downy Woodpecker 1 Black-capped Chickadee 2 House Wren 3 Swainson's Thrush 2 Yellow-rumped Warbler, Myrtle 5 Yellow-rumped Warbler, Intergrade 1 Spotted Towhee 1, banded in 2014 Song Sparrow 2 Lincoln's Sparrow 1 White-crowned Sparrow, Gambel's 1 Red-winged Blackbird 1 Open daily, weather permitting, through June 2, EXCEPT for May 13, 14, and 30. [cobirds] Bird Conservancy Banding Report - Chatfield Station, 5/7/16
We got in about 4 hours this morning before the wind picked up (and we were just back in our cars when the rain started). A pretty glorious 4 hours for us and the perhaps 40 visitors that came by for some or all of the morning - counting new, repeats and returns, we processed 42 birds of 20 species, 6 of which were new for the season. Plus 1 of our really senior Yellow Warblers again returned - #2410-71588, banded 5/23/08 as a young bird, so now 9 years old. Here's the breakdown of the new and returns: Downy Woodpecker 1 Warbling Vireo 1 (FOS) House Wren 5 Blue-grey Gnatcatcher 2 Orange-crowned Warbler 1 Virginia's Warbler 5 (Probably a record for number of VIWAs caught in 1 day here) Yellow Warbler 3, all returns, the 1 mentioned above from 2008 and 2 from 2015 Yellow-rumped Warbler, Myrtle 1 Yellow-rumped Warbler, Audubon 3 MacGillivray's Warbler 1 (FOS) Common Yellowthroat 1 Yellow-breasted Chat 1 (FOS) Western Tanager 1 (FOS) Green-tailed Towhee 2 (FOS) Chipping Sparrow 1 Clay-colored Sparrow 1 (FOS) Lincoln's Sparrow 2 White-crowned Sparrow, Mountain 4 new, 1 banded last year Brown-headed Cowbird 1 Open daily, weather permitting, through June 2, EXCEPT for May 13, 14, and 30. We had another day of good variety for the many families visiting today for Audubon's annual Mother's Day brunch with the birds. Not quite as many species as yesterday, but between new, repeats and returns came up with 15 species. Especially exciting for us was catching Swallows - Violet-greens and Rough-wingeds. We've been salivating over them for several days, as they hunted for food, ever closer to net level. Here's the breakdown of the 27 new and 6 returns: Dusky Flycatcher 1 (FOS) Least Flycatcher 1 (FOS) Violet-green Swallow 2 (FOS) Northern Rough-winged Swallow 2 (FOS) House Wren 5 Gray Catbird 2 (FOS) Virginia Warbler 6 (We thought it was amazing to catch 5 of these yesterday..) Yellow Warbler 3 new, 3 returns (1 banded in each of the years 2012, 2013, and 2015) Yellow-rumped Warbler, Audubon's 1 Common Yellowthroat 1 return (banded 2013) Spotted Towhee 1 new, 1 return (banded 2015) Lincoln's Sparrow 2 White-crowned Sparrow, Gambel's 1 Red-winged Blackbird 1 return (banded last year as a young bird, now a beautiful adult male) Open daily, weather permitting, through June 2, EXCEPT for May 13, 14, and 30. [cobirds] Bird Conservancy Banding Station Report - Barr Lake, 8/23 to 9/2/16
Hi Birders! We just finished our first official week of banding at Barr. There was also some banding the prior week, as our seasonal banders (folks going to Chico, Nebraska, and Ridgway) were getting oriented. We've had a good start, banding 50 or more birds in 3 of the first 10 days. Not surprisingly, Wilson's Warblers dominate - 234 of the 400 individual birds caught to date. There have been 95 other warblers (Yellows, Orange-crowned, MacGillivray's, Townsend's, Yellowthroats, Northern Waterthrushes, an Ovenbird and a Redstart), so +80% so far have been warblers. Today was one of the 50+ days - we caught 55 new birds in 3 hours, closing early at 9:30 because of wind and drizzle. The breakdown matched what we've been seeing for the days we've been open: House Wren 6 Orange-crowned Warbler 5 Yellow Warbler 6 American Redstart 1 Wilson's Warbler 36 Song Sparrow 1 We will be open 6 days each week, weather permitting, through October 16. We are closed every Monday in September, then October 4 and 12. We are opening nets at about 6:30 a.m. and we start closing between 11 a.m. and 12 noon. We will open later and/or close earlier if it is very hot, very cold, wet, windy, etc. There are school groups most weekday mornings, usually arriving around 9:30. Best times to visit, if you like lots of birds and fewer humans, are early mornings during the week and Sundays. Come visit! [cobirds] Bird Conservancy Banding Station Report - Barr Lake Station, 9/6/16
Cool, wind, rain threatening...we opened about half the station and banded at a relaxed but constant pace all morning. 35 new birds, and a whopping 25 recaptures - lots of young Wilson's that have not put on enough fat yet to continue their migration. Breakdown for the day of the new birds: Dusky Flycatcher 1 Black-capped Chickadee 1 House Wren 2 Blue-grey Gnatcatcher 1 (FOS) Orange-crowned Warbler 1 Yellow Warbler 3 Common Yellowthroat 1 Wilson's Warbler 22 Song Sparrow 1 American Goldfinch 2 (These were the 2nd and 3rd juveniles, probably from the same brood. All caught within feet of each other. Wing and tail feathers still growing in. Cute.) We are open 6 days each week, weather permitting, through October 16. We are closed every Monday in September, then October 4 and 12. We are opening nets at about 6:30 a.m. and we start closing between 11 a.m. and 12 noon. [cobirds] Bird Conservancy Banding Report - Barr Lake Station, Saturday and Sunday
On Saturday and Sunday we had about half as many birds as Friday, but it was really a reduction in the number of new Wilson's..a little break before the big influx that should come over the next couple of weeks? In addition to new bird numbers in the mid-twenties, we've had lots of recaptures - primarily hatch year Wilson's that are trying to put on enough fat to move on to the next leg of their migration. Here's the breakdown of new birds for each of the two days: Saturday - 24 new birds: Willow Flycatcher 1 Dusky Flycatcher 2 Black-capped Chickadee 1 House Wren 4 Yellow Warbler 1 MacGillivray's Warbler 1 Wilson's Warbler 11 Western Tanager 1 Song Sparrow 1 Lincoln's Sparrow 1 Sunday - 28 new, 1 return: Western Wood-pewee 2 Black-capped Chickadee 1 House Wren 1 return, banded 9/11/15 Yellow Warbler 5 Townsend's Warbler 2 Common Yellowthroat 2 Wilson's Warbler 12 Chipping Sparrow 1 Clay-colored Sparrow 1 Brewer's Sparrow 1 American Goldfinch 1 *We are closed tomorrow, Monday, Labor Day. * We will be open 6 days each week, weather permitting, through October 16. Another day similar to yesterday - modest number of new birds (25) and relatively large number of recaps (24). Wilson's Warblers continuing to dominate. We enjoyed a visit with the Boulder Bird Club early, and then spent the balance of the morning with groups of very enthusiastic home schoolers. [cobirds] Bird Conservancy Banding Station Report - Barr Lake Station, 9/14/16
Love days like this - cool early mornings, warming up enough to be pleasant but not too hot for banding! Bird captures were fairly steady all morning. Caught 60 birds, but over half had been banded previously this season. Perhaps not surprising, given the really big day we had yesterday. Here's the breakdown of the 29 new birds: Northern Flicker, Red-shafted 1 Hammond's Flycatcher 1 House Wren 3 Ruby-crowned Kinglet 1 Hermit Thrush 1 Orange-crowned Warbler 2 Yellow Warbler 1 Yellow-rumped Warbler, Audubon's 1 Townsend's Warbler 1 Common Yellowthroat 2 Wilson's Warbler 14 Dark-eyed Junco, Pink-sided 1 We are open 6 days each week, weather permitting, through October 16.We are closed every Monday in September, then October 4 and 12. [cobirds] Bird Conservancy Banding Report - Barr Lake Station, 9/10/16
These mid-season (although slightly early) days are great. A huge mix of species - 17 total today if we count new, returns from previous seasons and recaps from this year. Six new species for the season (see below). As a Barr Birding Festival visitor commented, it was like Christmas as each new bag was opened. Here's a breakdown of the 40 new captures today: Downy Woodpecker 1 Dusky Flycatcher 1 Red-breasted Nuthatch 1 (FOS) White-breasted Nuthatch 1 (FOS. I don't remember ever catching both nuthatches on the same day before.) Rock Wren 1 (FOS) Ruby-crowned Kinglet 2 (FOS) Hermit Thrush 2 (FOS) American Robin 1 return, banded 10/10/15 (FOS) Orange-crowned Warbler 4 Yellow Warbler 1 Yellow-rumped Warbler, Audubon's 1 Townsend's Warbler 1 Wilson's Warbler 13 Chipping Sparrow 7 Lincoln's Sparrow 3 (Species caught not mentioned above - birds that had been banded earlier this year - were American Redstart and MacGillivray's Warbler.) We are open 6 days each week, weather permitting, through October 16.We are closed every Monday in September, then October 4 and 12. [cobirds] Bird Conservancy Banding Report - Barr Lake Station, 9/8/16
Still a modest number of birds but a more interesting morning! Started the day with a GREAT CRESTED FLYCATCHER! A big and beautiful and feisty bird. The second for the station - the first was caught in 2013 the day after the big storm. We also had our first White-crowned Sparrows; I thought this was early, but just checked and our first last year was on 9/1. In the breakdown for the day, you will note fewer warbler species and more seed-eaters: Downy Woodpecker 1 Hammond's Flycatcher 1 (FOS) Great Crested Flycatcher 1 House Wren 1 Wilson's Warbler 18 Clay-colored Sparrow 2 Brewer's Sparrow 1 White-crowned Sparrow, Gambel's 3 (FOS) Lazuli Bunting 1 We are open 6 days each week, weather permitting, through October 16. [cobirds] Bird Conservancy Banding Report - Barr Lake Station, 9/13/16
The weather change brought in the next big wave of Wilson's Warblers - a fine mix of hatch year and adult, males and females. Most in the first 2 hours of the morning, under grey, cool, and windy (at the station, although not so much at the nets, which are much more sheltered) conditions. As we moved through the morning, we added some other species for a pretty nice mix overall. 70 new birds: Hermit Thrush 1 Orange-crowned Warbler 7 Yellow Warbler 3 American Redstart 1 MacGillivray's Warbler 1 Wilson's Warbler 46 Green-tailed Towhee 1 (FOS) Chipping Sparrow 8 Clay-colored Sparrow 1 Lincoln's Sparrow 1 We are open 6 days each week, weather permitting, through October 16.We are closed every Monday in September, then October 4 and 12. [cobirds] Bird Conservancy Banding Report - Barr Banding Station, 9/9/16
On a day with weather perfect for banding, we caught 50 new birds and a wide variety of species. Wilson's Warblers barely beat out Chipping Sparrows as the most caught bird of the day. 7 warbler and 5 sparrow species. First Yellow-rumped Warbler of the season. And 3 juvenile Mourning Doves, on perhaps their first day out of the nest. You could tell from their development that they hatched several days apart - the oldest with almost fully grown wing and tail feathers, and the youngest barely able to fly. Here's the breakdown: Mourning Dove 3 (FOS) Dusky Flycatcher 3 House Wren 2 Swainson's Thrush 1 Orange-crowned Warbler 4 Yellow Warbler 2 Yellow-rumped Warbler, Myrtle 1 (FOS) American Redstart 1 Northern Waterthrush 1 Common Yellowthroat 1 Wilson's Warbler 14 Chipping Sparrow 13 Clay-colored Sparrow 1 Brewer's Sparrow 1 Lincoln's Sparrow 1 White-crowned Sparrow, Gambel's 1 Tomorrow, Saturday 9/10, is the Barr Lake Birding Festival. Lots of booths and activities for the whole family in the area near the Nature Center, and lots of visitors to the banding station. We are open 6 days each week, weather permitting, through October 16.We are closed every Monday in September, then October 4 and 12. We are opening nets at about 6:30 a.m. and we start closing between 11 a.m. and 12 noon. [cobirds] Bird Conservancy Banding Report - Barr Lake Station, 9/18/16
When our first run of the morning consisted of 5 recaps and only 1 new bird, we knew we were likely in for a slow day. Apparently little moved in over the past 24 hours. Total new birds for the day was 14 (we had 15 recaps): House Wren 1 Orange-crowned Warbler 4 Wilson's Warbler 9 WE ARE CLOSED TOMORROW - MONDAY. Never know what will happen..It was cool and foggy early this morning and we weren't catching much; we were debating whether the fog was becoming mist and whether closing was in order. Then things cleared a bit, and the next run was a good one - caught a Cassin's Vireo and a Blue-headed Vireo almost side by side. We also had a Green-tailed Towhee and a Spotted Towhee at the same time, making for 2 great photo ops in one morning. And a Nashville Warbler. And our first two Catbirds of the season. All in all, a great morning, with 37 new birds of 16 species, plus 2 Chickadees banded last year: Cassin's Vireo 1 Blue-headed Vireo 1 (First and perhaps only of season) Black-capped Chickadee 2, both banded in 2015 House Wren 3 Hermit Thrush 2 Gray Catbird 2 (FOS) Orange-crowned Warbler 6 Nashville Warbler 1 (FIrst and likely only of season) Yellow-rumped Warbler, Audubon's 2 Townsend's Warbler 1 Common Yellowthroat 1 Wilson's Warbler 8 Green-tailed Towhee 2 Spotted Towhee 1 (FOS) Chipping Sparrow 3 Lincoln's Sparrow 2 White-crowned Sparrow, Gambel's 1 We are open 6 days each week, weather permitting, through October 16.We are closed every Monday in September, then October 4 and 12. [cobirds] Bird Conservancy Banding Report - Barr Lake Station, 9/21/16
Another day like yesterday - a good number of birds, led by Wilson's. Despite the threat of heat, the cloud cover kept things comfortable and we were able to band through most of the morning. We started with lots of recaps (birds banded earlier this season, a total of 33), then moved on to newly arrived Wilson's and Orange-crowned, then caught 4 Audubon's Warblers on our last run. We are pleased to see that, unlike earlier in the season, our current recaps are showing significant amounts of fat.a sign they are finding plenty to eat and getting the energy they need to continue their journey. Here's the breakdown of the 48 new birds: Downy Woodpecker 1 House Wren 2 Ruby-crowned Kinglet 3 Hermit Thrush 2 Orange-crowned Warbler 7 Yellow-rumped Warbler, Audubon's 4 Wilson's Warbler 28 Chipping Sparrow 1 We are open 6 days each week, weather permitting, through October 16.We are closed every Monday in September, then October 4 and 12. [cobirds] Bird Conservancy Banding Report - Barr Lake Station, 9/28/16
Today's weather was almost identical to yesterday, but yesterday there was lots of bird activity and today almost none. Only banded 10 birds today: Hammond's Flycatcher 1 (first flycatcher in 12 days) Ruby-crowned Kinglet 1 Orange-crowned Warbler 3 Yellow-rumped Warbler, Audubon's 1 Wilson's Warbler 1 Song Sparrow 2 Lincoln's Sparrow 1 We also caught a Black-capped Chickadee that we banded in 2010. I also might report on a recovery of a Song Sparrow from last week. (A "recovery" is a bird that we catch that was banded elsewhere.) When we caught it, I figured it had been banded at Barr; I've always assumed that most if not all of the Song Sparrows at Barr are year-round residents. After searching my Barr records and finding nothing, I asked our banding coordinator, who discovered that the bird had been banded earlier this fall at the Allegra Colister Reserve in Boulder County, outside of Lyons. So, a short story about a short-distance migrant! We are open 6 days each week, weather permitting, through October 16. We have 2 more closed days - Tues, Oct 4 and Wed, Oct 12. We are opening nets at about 6:50 a.m. and most days we start closing between 11 a.m. and 12 noon. We will open later and/or close earlier if it is very hot, very cold, wet, windy, etc. There are school groups most weekday mornings, usually arriving around 9:30. [cobirds] Bird Conservancy Banding Report - Barr Lake Station, 10/2/16
Our 'just another quiet fall morning at Barr" was interrupted at about 8:40 when a mixed flock of Flickers and Starlings came through. Both species have been around for weeks, and we've caught a few Flickers, but this morning we got 3 of each on the same net run. A somewhat raucous few minutes as we extricated these birds with out-sized personalities from 2 adjacent nets. Ended the day with 4 Flickers, one of which was a gorgeous Intergrade - a red-shafted head pattern with beautiful yellow on the wings and tail, and one of which was banded on September 30 last year, the day we caught 5 in the same net run. A nice morning, with 18 new, 1 return and a good mix of species: Red-shafted Flicker 2 new, 1 banded last year Flicker Intergrade 1 House Wren 1 Hermit Thrush 1 Gray Catbird 1 European Starling 3 Orange-crowned Warbler 1 Yellow-rumped Warbler, Audubon's 1 Wilson's Warbler 1 Spotted Towhee 1 Song Sparrow 2 Lincoln's Sparrow 1 White-crowned Sparrow, Gambel's 2 We are open 6 days each week, weather permitting, through October 16. [cobirds] Bird Conservancy Banding Report - Barr Lake Station, 9/24/16
The days we love - enough birds to stay busy, at least one really cool thing, and good company to share it with! No formal groups today, but lots of bird enthusiasts dropped by, many staying most of the morning, including Hugh and Urling Kingery, sharing their expertise and enthusiasm. I was short one volunteer due to illness, but no matter - Hugh Kingery and Don Beltz, veteran recorders from years back, stepped in. 38 new birds plus 1 return from last year. The really cool was a Hairy Woodpecker, caught in the same run as a Downy. Great comparison/contrast! Plus Hugh noted that the Hairy had more white on its back and wing coverts, suggesting a more Eastern bird, while the Downy was more black, the sign of a Western bird. Here's the breakdown for the morning: Downy Woodpecker 1 Hairy Woodpecker 1 Black-capped Chickadee 1, banded 2015 Hermit Thrush 1 Orange-crowned Warbler 6 Yellow-rumped Warbler, Audubon's 3 Wilson's Warbler 18 Chipping Sparrow 7 Song Sparrow 1 We are open 6 days each week, weather permitting, through October 16.We are closed every Monday in September, then October 4 and 12. [cobirds] Bird Conservancy Banding Report - Barr Lake Station, 10/11/16
Lots of Yellow-rumpeds this year! We've banded over 100 so far, which is more than any year going back to 2005 (my easily available compiled data). All but 1 have been Audubon's (there have been 2 that showed characteristics suggesting they were intergrades). It would have been a quiet day otherwise, but these late warblers kept us quite busy. Here's the breakdown of the 46 new birds today: Red-shafted Flicker 1 Ruby-crowned Kinglet 1 Hermit Thrush 2 Orange-crowned Warbler 1 Yellow-rumped Warbler, Audubon's 37 Yellow-rumped Warbler, unidentified 1 Chipping Sparrow 2 White-crowned Sparrow, Gambel's 1 This is our last week! We are CLOSED tomorrow (Wed), then open Thurs through Sun. All dependent on weather, but right now looks like it should be fine. Opening nets about 7 a.m., have birds at the station by about 7:30, closing between 11 and 11:30 most days. We will take down the station on Sun. Another very good day for mid-October. Yellow-rumpeds continue, along with White-crowned Sparrow and Juncos. The big birds - Flickers, Jays, Red-winged Blackbirds, Magpies - are around and noisy, taunting us from the trees above the nets. [cobirds] Bird Conservancy Banding Report - Opening Day at Chatfield, 4/26/17
A perfectly lovely first day at Chatfield. First bird of the season was a Song Sparrow, banded last year. First migrant was a Wilson's Warbler. Morning started cold but warmed up fast. Caught 20 birds of 10 species, including 4 banded in prior years: Black-capped Chickadee 1 House Wren 1 Blue-grey Gnatcatcher 1 American Robin 3 Orange-crowned Warbler 2 Yellow-rumped Warbler, Myrtle 2 Yellow-rumped Warbler, intergrade 1 Wilson's Warbler 1 Spotted Towhee 1 new, 1 banded 2016 Song Sparrow 2 new, 2 banded 2016, 1 banded 2014 Lincoln's Sparrow 1 The BCCH, SPTOs, and SOSPs were all in breeding condition - males with expanded cloacas and females with brood patches. The male Robins flew to the banding station and squawked at us from a nearby tree until we released their girlfriends. Feels very "alive" out there! The banding station is runs daily, weather permitting, through June 1 (except for May 4-6 and 29), from 7:00 to approximately 11:30. There have been some changes in WEEKEND visiting policies - If you are planning a weekend visit, I strongly encourage you to go to denveraudubon.org to get more information and guarantee your spot by PRE-REGISTERING. Weekdays are the same as in the past - school groups arrive between 9:30 and 10; early weekday mornings are the best time for a peaceful visit with us and the birds!
