Re: [Elecraft] Setup Help
Richard, I run the expert amp 1K FA with the K3. I run the KAT3 in bypass mode 100% of the time. I also use the amp barefoot sometimes through the amplifier using its antenna tuner in line. Re: [Elecraft] KPA-500 Combiner
Speaking of solid-state amps I am a happy SPE 1K FA owner and it says you can go up to 3:1 but it isn't very happy above 2:1. Nor do I run the amp on anything above 2:1. The warranty is also invalidated if you use an external autotuner and it breaks. Still a real nice amp but everything has its pros and cons. [Elecraft] K3 Filter question
I have recently been examining how my K3 filters operate and was curious if I could somehow expand the range I can use my lowest filter which is 250 kHz. It generally cuts out at 300 kHz and then my 1.8 kHz filter takes over. I would like to use the 250 kHz filter up to 400 kHz as I have read the filter is actually specified for 370 kHz. How do i change the cut out point for this filter? Is this something I can change in the utility program under filter calibration? I appreciate any advice on this. Re: [Elecraft] Advice on 6 meters...
I am a huge fan of 6m and 6m DXing but the fact is that a lot depends on geography where you live like on top of a mountain or in a valley, antenna and QTH. On the west coast we have far fewer openings than elsewhere in the US especially east and southeast coasts. PNW and north Midwest even fewer still. The band is about patience this side of the country. So don't overspend on 6m out west. When I got the 6m bug I spent a lot of money on a stack of large 6m antennas and discovered that when the band is open a more modest antenna will suffice even with 6m DX openings. If I Iived in the northeast or even Texas or Florida I would probably put up something bigger because you will have 4-5x more opportunities and openings to use it there than out here. Is the band worth investing in? The answer is a resounding yes but invest wisely and you will be happy. Also one other point, for us worker bees out west the band opens always when you are at work or busy with family. When you sit down in front of the radio the band almost never opens. Good luck! Question: is there any activity for six meters that I should invest in a nice multi-element 6 meter bean antenna? My most dominant operating mode would be CW but maybe some SSB from time to time. I have no idea what's there as this band has always been blank to me. 73, phil, K7PEH __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

Not to rain on the folks in Europe or eastern US or even Texas but 6m is a totally different animal out west. To better put this in perspective out of the entire San Diego DX club we have only one member who has 6m DXCC and it has taken him many solar cycles to do it. And it was all from the west coast. Re: [Elecraft] Buying a new K3/100 kit - Top 3 options?
I know I am late to this game but I recently got my K3 back and I missed or need these features the most. 1) KXV3 - for my receive antennas. 2) Fully filled up filters in your receiver - still want to get either 700 kHz or 1k filter for it. I have 13k, 2.8k,1.8k, and .25k. 3) and I like the KAT3 even though I don't need it with my home station but I plan to take it portable That is it. Sorry for late arrival. I expected a few replies, but nothing like what I've seen! Thank you to those that have responded both on-list and off. I very much appreciate the input. I've tallied the suggestions and here's what came out: #1 option: KAT-3 #2 option: KXV3A #3 option: KRX3 Almost everyone recommended filters of one flavor or another, 2 people recommended the P3, and one person recommended the KTXCO3-1. [Elecraft] K3 power down issue
I have been trying to figure out why my K3 won't power down completely. I currently have it connected to both a MicroHam USB 3 and a Y connector to my SPE 1K FA through the ACC. It works perfect when powered on. But shutdown cycle is not so perfect. The background light doesn't turn off all the way when powering down and stays lot without any digits or sound from the receiver. I have been unplugging it to turn it off, and I noticed that the last time I plugged the power in it came back on to normal operation. Any thoughts on this would be great. I am wondering if it is a bad Y cable. Been reinstalling my K3 serial 1391 back into the shack and was connecting it to the MicroHam USB 3 and was getting some PTT Errors that aren't there if I remove the USB 3. Does all sorts of funky things with the display like blanking out the frequency in the VFO, and other general inconveniences. I also have a BY-1 paddle set up and have the key output connected to my SPE 1K. I plan to build a cable for ALC this weekend but have been running it through amp more for antenna switching purposes than for QRO. Any thoughts on what I should do or what setting I am missing. Re: [Elecraft] A confession
As someone coming back to the K3 family, the only hiccups I ever had with my K3s were operator error induced like trying to load new firmware through a virtual port. No issues whatsoever with displays or firmware unless you consider some minor degradation of CW decode functionality a few years ago in one of the later firmware upgrades but that was fixed shortly thereafter by the Elecraft team and I went back to the previous version anyway during that time between fixings. You won't get that kind of support from any other rig manufacturer. Re: [Elecraft] Internal Antenna Tuner and SPE Expert Amplifier Questions
Mark, I own a SPE 1K and I would not use the internal tuner to tune any antenna above 2.5:1 with it unless you back down on power output significantly. I have found that once you raise output power above 500-600W with the SPE 1K it sometimes goes into protection mode with poorer matching antennas that have higher SWR. I found this with my S33 Mosley on 40m which had a big dip on the lower end of 40m before I retuned the antenna by extending it for the lower band setting. There are also issues with warranty for using an external turner with the SPE 1K that you should look into. Overall my opinion is that it is a really excellent amplifier but so far only have owner ten months. It is great for remote operations if you are going that route. Good luck! Re: [Elecraft] Elecraft] K3 + SPE 2K-FA Amplifier hook-up problems
I use a K3 with a SPE 1K FA and it works great. I had a custom cable made that interfaces between my MicroHam Microkeyer 2 and the amp for keying and it interfaces through the Icom CIV with a special cable for band changing. So not a traditional K3 to SPE 1K FA direct interface. There is also a connection I have for ALC from the K3. I also recommend the Expertamp group on yahoo. There are two groups one for general expert amps all models and one just for the 2K FA. You will find the help there that you need. Good luck! Re: [Elecraft] sub receiver
I have a K3 with a second receiver that I use rarely but I enjoy having it for DX pileups that work split. It has saved me buckets of time getting through the pileups. I also plan to use it this winter for receive antennas for the lower bands. However since I am into 6m I find having a visual tool of the band invaluable. I could probably live without the second receiver but I don't think I could live without the ability to see the band and short openings that are occurring on 6m. Re: [Elecraft] OT: How to *NOT* get scammed.....emails offering to sell Elecraft equipment?
Just a couple elaborations on these fine points. 1) QRZ email address is not always a sure fire protection against fraudulent posts. I had one gentleman I was going to purchase from who was unaware that his QRZ email was hacked. Get a phone number and references from another ham in his/her area if it is a big dollar purchase. 2) definitely communicate on the phone about the deal. Get additional pictures of the equipment. Trust your gut. If it feels wrong it probably is wrong. 3) I use Paypal and I realize it is expensive but I like the protections it provides. Cashiers checks is also something I have used with the name of the ham operator selling the equipment based on callsign on qrz or FCC database. Just another couple elaborations on already posted good suggestions. Good luck! Re: [Elecraft] K3 using Clear Speech Speaker
I do wish the K3 NR was better but for all the negatives I do use it on 40 80 with some success on 7-1 and 7-2. It is not totally useless for me. It would be the one thing I would like Elecraft to improve if it was possible. I absolutely love the K3 APF for weak signal CW work especially on 6m. Without it I would have not worked JA on 6m this past SSSP season. I use notch sparingly but it does work ok for me on SSB as noted below. Filtering...well it is extra special in that department and probably a major reason we own K3s. It has a 5 position noise control and I usually leave it at 1, which knocks down the noise without any negative effects on the sound. Heil no longer makes it, but I believe it uses similar circuitry. My default setting is at 1 out of 5, and this cleans up the harsh noise very nicely without noticeable audio degradation. When the noise gets really bad, I have used it all the way up to 5, and still don't find the audio objectionable. I also have not had a lot of success with the K3 built in NR, but this is probably due to my lack of understanding how to use it; but since the Clear Speech works so well, I take the lazy way out. If there's any good updated info on how to use the NR effectively, I'd be all ears. Maybe someone who really has it working well can do a YouTube? My 2 cents. Ron KB6G K3 S/N 1997 P.S. Re: [Elecraft] K3 6/10M pre-amp
I think a preamp with the K3 is an absolute necessity out here in Southern California with a small six element antenna for 6m. I use one both the PR6 and the Collins Laboratory preamp I purchased from Dr Jack Smith. Both work great. Btw, I have not heard before anyone on the east coast refer to their location as a black hole for 6m. This is definitely a first for me. When you live in Southern California and you get the chance to DX to Europe about one or two days every decade. Re: [Elecraft] KX3 Amp
One other choice and this is probably not widely known but the THP HL450B will put out about 200W driven at 12W from the KX3. I ran one with my KX3 before I sold the KX3. It is a pricey amp. I think someone quoted it as the highest $ per watt but it does work real nicely. Needs large 13.8 VDC source rated at 60 amps at full 400W output. Good luck! No tuner though so you will have to invest in a ZL100 or equivalent. The Elecraft tuner is faster and tunes a wider range. Size wise is only slightly smaller than the Elecraft 4 1/8 wide and tall by 7 deep. The TenTec is a larger amp - $800 plus a 100w tuner. The THP HL45B is a solid performer at about $450 from HRO. Again you need an outboard tuner. You have to manually switch bands. If you don't it will go on standby - a self protective feature. I played with a THP for a while and it works well. You can get one used - not easy - for about $250-$300. There are the RM Italy variants - beware do no t overdrive - IMD artifacts - HL300B is the model - only drive to 100W - I have no experience with this amp. These are not certified by the FCC. Field day 2E running K3 and one other portable rig on solar and batteries at 5W. So nice. My second ever field day (active, did not participate last year), and at home with my ten month old son, Max, on my lap enjoying the experience with me. Cheese, crackers and grapes appetizer with view of the San Diego bay and the pacific. This was the best field day ever and my son Maximiliano there with me, my wife and Bruce made it special. One special note on the super killer K3. I heard that JA was working the west coast on 6m while on field day duty. I broke down the station with the K3 under my arm and ran to the house to set it back up with my normal gear. Five minutes later I was able to work my first JA station on 6m ever CW. And the K3 and my microkeyer 2 in perfect combination made it happen. Good contact on 6m. Made my second ever active field day so super awesome! I love my K3! Re: [Elecraft] Thoughts on the KXPA100 [was: QRP]
I had a RM Italy amp for about two months and it was horrible. I tried it in my mobile and it had all sorts of issues and only really worked on 15m. I would not recommend it to anyone. I sold it for 1/3 of the price I paid for it warning the guy about it profusely. He has been using it now and then with little issue with his flex 1500 at his home QTH. Maybe that makes a difference but I could not recommend one to anyone. On the other hand my THP HL450B is a sweet ride. The only thing I don't like about it is no 6m. With 10W input I was getting 200W output on all HF bands it covers. It is probably the most expensive solid state amp $ per watt in the market. So that would probably keep some people away. I think it is qutie obvious that, despite the cost, the KXPA100 is a much better piece of equipment. I'd love to replace my boat anchor with the KXPA100 but I just spent my spare ham funds on my wife's birthday present this morning. Maybe another day. The latter would be a good choice if you're looking for minimum size and weight in an amp. Many competing 100-W amps don't cover 160-6 meters, or don't make it to 100 W on 6 meters. Many have poor IMD performance on some bands (we bought one of each and tested them in our lab; some were truly awful). None of them offer a companion internal ATU. We were very aggressive in our efforts to minimize cost, but we had some non-negotiable objectives: 160-6 meter coverage at full power; individual low-pass filters on every band to optimize for low transmit IMD; extensive monitoring circuitry to ensure safe operation; a large heatsink to eliminate the need for fans; and full integration with the KX3, including automatic control of the ATU option and its dual antenna jacks. We included a carrying handle and mounting points for mobile installation--as far as I know, these are unique to the KXPA100. The KXPA100 isn't for everyone, but it does meet our stringent performance and functional objectives. 73, Wayne N6KR On Jun 18, 2013, at 11:27 AM, Richard Thorpe kis...@me.com wrote: QRP is looking better…. __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html -- Rick McClelland, AA5S Fort Collins, CO __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

Re: [Elecraft] Will a casual SSB operator enjoy the K3?
I am a new ham (only 27+ months licensed) and I couldn't be more happy with the K3. It provides the best receiver for the price bar none and like Fred mentioned it is customizable which is super cool. I use it with dual receivers and the LP Panadapter and I enjoy it very much. If you are interested in 6m SSB (which means you probably won't be talking very much at least out west here) you will need the preamp. For HF it is a great rig and I especially love it on the lower bands where it really shines. The Noise blanker and roofing filters are excellent. If I was going to do it all over again, I probably would have been just as happy with a new base model with the 2.8 kHz and a narrower CW filter, the transverter interface unit, and 6m preamp. Good luck and welcome back (from the ultra-nube). Re: [Elecraft] Is ham radio a sport ??
Anything you can drink alcohol during and eat carne asada while doing is not a sport. Haha! But then again I used to play on corporate softball team and that is exactly what we did. I did consider softball a sport as people were very competitive, cursed a lot, tried tactics of intimidation and ridicule (ham radio does have that going for it), and people got hurt. I think physical exertion and risk of physical harm are the things that are lacking to convince me ham radio is a sport IMHO. For a long time I was thinking of combining snowboarding and DXing together as an activity. Maybe remote on top of Mammoth looking for a tree to hang an antenna and working DX, but even that would not be a sport. Much as I used to run long distance races (Oahu Perimeter run, half marathons, 20k, etc) but I don't really consider that a sport. Even the iron man in hawaii is not a sport, it is an endurance competition. Ham radio can be a competitive activity but it is mostly a great challenging hobby. Another thought, I have a couple family members whose company has major TV special effects and post production contracts with ESPN, CBS sports and the Bundesliga and others, so maybe I can ask them to poll their clients on whether they believe that ham radio is a sport. It would make for a very interesting discussion maybe on the Jim Rome show or sportscenter. Lol. The DX Store sells the PR781 Heil microphone for $139. Plan to add that to my portfolio of microphones which include a Yamaha headset, two Heil headsets and a mini portable Heil microphone. I have been using the Yamaha and Heil portable microphone lately. Get good audio reports from both. Saw that the DX Store had the PR781 and seems to be a good price. Yes, there are places for specialized microphones - if one is working from a distance (e.g., a shotgun mic), trying to mic a kick drum, or trying to duplicate the complex overtone structure of classical strings using a microphone designed for the job is essential. However, communications is one of the least demanding applications for a microphone and spending $200, $300 or even $400 is not going to provide any more performance than the $50 utility mic. Re: [Elecraft] TX5K
I was a little bummed to not have a chance to work them on 160/80 this week as I was out on business travel until Thursday night and I didn't see them on the cluster in those bands friday or yesterday morning pacific time. I did get to work them on five bands in about 35 minutes over two days. The K3 did a nice job of picking them up on my inverted V on 40m and lower than optimal height mounted three element SteppIR on a couple higher bands. Keith AK6ZZ Sent from my iPhone please excuse typos On Mar 9, 2013, at 5:16 AM, Dyarnes w7...@cox.net wrote: Yep, I worked them on 160 SSB on the 8th, which was apparently about the last day for that band. I worked them on 160 CW a few days earlier. Not sure why the antenna for 160 and 80 came down so early--maybe it blew down??? It seems like after they crossed the 100K QSO mark, their activity started to fall off. Perhaps that was their goal, and after that they wanted to enjoy a little R R? Or, maybe the sand crabs got to them! Hi. Like you, I wasn't sure 160 SSB was on their agenda. I don't think VP6DX brought up anything on 160 SSB, so maybe that's not considered to be a particularly productive band/mode combination. In any event, the TX5K website had a neat feature that showed, at any point in time, just what bands and modes were active. At this moment they are still only operating on 40 SSB. It's odd to only see one position light on. Usually there were at least 4 or 5, and as many as 7 or 8. As I mentioned previously, my working them on 80 and 160 is still sort of amazing--to me anyway. I say that because I've tried various goofy antennas on 160 before with almost no luck whatsoever. An R8 vertical isn't supposed to work on 80, let alone 160. I had tried it, mainly as a lark, on the VP6DX DXpedition. Surprise! Surprise! They heard me! You know my ERP had to be just one step up from a dummy load. It's proof positive that just about anything will radiate something, and further provided whoever is at the other end has a decent antenna to hear you with! The R8 actually shows a half-way decent SWR even without the tuner. 160 is more problematic, but the KAT500 (or just the K3 internal ATU when running barefoot) will bring it down to close to 1:1 on both bands. That certainly substantiates some of the performance claims by Elecraft. If you just don't get greedy, and run very much power, everything behaves nicely. By the way, it was interesting to see them often on the same band with more than one mode. Not all DXpeditions do that--at least not as much. I think at least part of the credit for being able to do that is the Elecraft equipment. Dave, AA7EE posted a link to a very interesting historical summary of Clipperton Island on the QRP-L reflector. I've added the link below for those who may be interested. I found it fascinating! The other historical thing I am reminded of is that, back around the time I first got my license, there was a DXpedition to Clipperton Island by the YASME group--mainly Lloyd Colvin (W6KG?). It was all over the cover of CQ Magazine. Maybe that was the first DXpedition to Clipperton??? Do I also remember that later there was some sort of flap about YASME? I have a ham that lives within .5 miles of me who works primarily on VHF bands and has been written about in QST for his 6m prowess in contests. When he operates he takes up 25 kc on 6m and basically wipes out the ssb portion of the band and sometimes even more down into the top of CW portion. As he is a famous vhf guy in the area i brought this up to some folks at hro and they say it must be the front end issue with my K3. I feel for your situation as I doubt there is much that I can do since he is so close and come contest time on 6m I don't even go on the band. Thank goodness he is not an HF guy. [Elecraft] [K3] Integration and Increasing complexity
My shack is getting increasingly complex and with my K3 I plan to once again attempt to get the remoterig working once and for all. At the moment I have the MicroHam microkeyer 2 integrated with my Steppir three element antenna interfacing with my K3. It is a nice setup. The ACC plug is shared with a Y connector between my Microkeyer 2 and the Quadra. When I use 6m I usually unplug the Microkeyer to swap out for the preamp. Adding the remoterig soon means that some of the same audio connectors and rs232 connectors need to be shared. The number of connection points and potential share points is increasing. Is there any commercial product that would be able to cleanly and efficiently provide seamless and simple integration of my increasingly complex shack and be able to integrate all these components. Re: [Elecraft] Is the K3 a fun radio to operate ?
I have owned some yaesu rigs (FT950, 920,450,857D) and most have menus at one level or another. The FT920 was the easiest one to operate but the other three had levels of menus similar to the K3. I think the K3 may have a steeper learning curve compared to those other radios, but once you get familiarized with the radio it is easy and fun. Plus it is way more fun to hear (and then work) stations that you cannot hear on those other radios and I have done A/B testing and can attest to those extra DXCC entity contacts that I would not have had without the K3. So definitely more fun for me. [Elecraft] [KX3] Solid state amps and KX3 negative ALC
Please excuse me for my newbieness in asking this question but it has been on my mind for awhile now. I am the proud owner of KX3 847 and am curious about the need for Negative ALC capability and interface for the KX3 as I connect it to my solid state amplifiers. I have been looking at the manual and thinking about interfacing the KX3 with my two solid state amplifiers, THP HL450 and the yaesu Quadra. Both recommend use of negative ALC connection from the transceiver. For my K3, the negative ALC mod satisfies the Quadra in this respect. I am looking for reference of negative ALC for the KX3 and cannot seem to locate such a capability and interface. If it is in the manual my apologies for taking up reflector space please let me know which page I am overlooking. If not, then my assumption is that because of the low level of power output 12W max, it was deemed not necessary to have this in the KX3. Please let me know if I am on the right track so I can finally feel comfortable interfacing the KX3 with my amps. Thanks Happy New Year one and all! Re: [Elecraft] [KX3] Solid state amps and KX3 negative ALC
Don, Thanks I appreciate the confirmation greatly of what I assumed was the case. With the power output limited to 12 watts, there should be no need to connect anything to the ALC on your amplifier. That is just not available on the KX3, nor is it available on any other QRP transceiver that I know about. I plan to eventually go K line all the way to include the P3, KPA500 and KAT500 but for now I have many different types of equipment cobbled to together in the shack and wanted to get a little more operating scope with my KX3. Re: [Elecraft] [KX3] Solid state amps and KX3 negative ALC
I have been using the KX3 with the THP HL450B and they seem to be getting along fine. I am currently using the KX3 again in my truck as I sold my K3 that was in my mobile. The K3 was a real nice mobile radio but I needed the money for antenna repairs and upgrades. Funny thing is that the KX3 is still having high current warnings and the K3 had absolutely zero issues in the mobile. Not sure why the KX3 doesn't like my mobile environment but after having a FT450AT, my K3 and a Icom 706 having minimal issues the KX3 seems to have more problems in my truck than the other radios. Thanks for providing the information. Just want to make sure that I get this right. Re: [Elecraft] [KX3] Solid state amps and KX3 negative ALC
If anyone is interested the THP HL450B is putting out about 180-200W with 12W input from my KX3. I am surprised and extremely pleased to see that output. As soon as I solve the issue that I will discuss with Matt, I will share the solution with the group. Re: [Elecraft] [KX3] Solid state amps and KX3 negative ALC
Hi Phil, Thanks. I previously used the Elecraft cable and had the same warnings. I will check out the Mouser supply with the 18 gauge wires. Maybe one of those cables will solve this illusive issue. Best regards, Keith AK6ZZ Sent from my iPhone please excuse typos On Jan 5, 2013, at 1:54 PM, Phil Debbie Salas dpsa...@tx.rr.com wrote: I had this high current warning problem awhile and it drove me crazy. Turns out that I was using another 2.1x5.5mm cable I had (not the one supplied by Elecraft). That cable had 24 gauge wires in it. It may have also been due to a poor interface at the plug end. Anyway, I saw an excessive voltage drop when transmitting (took me awhile to think to monitor the voltage on the KX3), which caused the high current warning for some reason. Anyway, going back to the Elecraft 2.1x5.5mm cable COMPLETELY solved the problem. I have since purchased several cables from Mouser (part number 172-7445-E). These are 2-foot long cables using 18 gauge wire. They also have the right-angle 2.1x5.5mm connector. These cables work great. I terminated the stripped end with PowerPole connectors so I can then add extension cables if needed. [Elecraft] [K3] Subreceiver question - new small beverage antenna
I just put up a small 250' beverage antenna in the backyard / canyon and have been using my subreceiver and I have a couple questions about some intermittent receive performance either coming from the antenna or the sub receiver. I noticed that every once in awhile the sub receiver signal drops significantly and if I tune a couple KHz it pops up again. I can also get it to gain sensitivity sometimes it I cycle the sub receiver switch on or off. I am wondering if this has something to do with my antenna since I have switched it between ANT 1 and the subreceiver and sensitivity varies. It maybe the coax so I will switch that out today. Just wanted to see if anyone has had some issues like this before. Got it this morning and measured the output voltage. Mine sits right at 13.8 volts, so I immediately hooked it up to the KX3. Full load with the KX3 key down putting out 12 watts, the thing sits pretty much rock solid at 13.6 and key up it goes back to 13.8 and stays there so it's got good regulation and will handle the rig nicely. The power cord is ferrite choked right where it comes out of the supply and the plug, even though it isn't a right angle one, fits the KX3's power jack perfectly. Next, I started looking for birdies using the KX3 with a 4 pickup loop I made with a BNC to double binding post adapter. The P/S box has an LED indicator on it and with the loop laid on the case near the LED, I got some pretty loud broadband noise that covered everything from 160-6 meters, but fell off and was undetectable with the loop 4 inches from the box. I ran through each band individually and could find no birdies attributable to this power supply in any ham band 160-6 meters. This was confirmed by shutting the supply down whenever I found noise or carrier type birdies and they stayed where they were. For less than 9 bucks this supply appears to be really pretty decent to carry along. It has at least a 3 foot AC cord that plugs into the box and the output cord is very close to 5 feet long so you have a lot of leeway in P/S placement. According to the specs shown on eBay, it has both over current and over voltage protection. I didn't short out the plug to find out if it shut down would blow an internal fuse as the supply is sealed and I didn't want to chance ruining it before getting a chance to take it on a trip. I've been using it this morning to power the KX3 on the bench and hanging out around 14.060 looking for QRP contacts. The KX3's voltage monitor is indicating right at 13.8 volts and .250 milliamps of current. Backlight is on, audio set to 20 with VFO noise reduction on, RX isolation on and the 20db preamp is on so 250 milliamps is just about right for current draw at 13.8V. Pretty decent lilttle supply for the money and RF wise, it's extremely quiet compared to some I've seen. Jim - W0EB I use this one...14 volts, 4 amps. The plug on it fits the KX3 and the open ckt voltage is 14 vdc exactly. http://www.ebay.com/itm/KSAS065-65W-Adapter-power-supply-Output- 14Vdc-4A-2-1mm-plug-NEW-FREE-SHIP- /261135859531?pt=US_Monitor_Power_Supplieshash=item3ccce8ff4b Chuck, KE9UW Lionel Trains, TCA, LCCA, LRRC aka Jack, BMW Motorcycles BMWMOA #224 __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html - No virus found in this message. Re: [Elecraft] K3 HRD Ver 6
I am happy with it. Surely a beta no doubt. There are some new features that I am already enamored with such as QSL card label printing and some specific logbook features that make DXing more efficient for me. Other products may have similar offerings but I am cool with this one for now. There are some bugs in dm780 but I hopeful the HRD team will get them fixed. I have enjoying using their PSK and RTTY programs which are really good for me though their older CW offering is not good. The good thing is that there are many options to choose from and switching costs are pretty low overall. I am pleased so far with the beta and am looking forward to the newer HRD v6 when it goes prime time early next year. I have had bad experiences buying ham equipment on eBay and like Fred focus on QTH.com or qrz.com for used equipment. Burned by radiomart 2x, and a bad old skool Yaesu tube amp. These three experiences has made me move to those websites that are actually run and managed by ham operators. I don't use Ebay a lot, but I have made a few acquisitions through it. Fortunately, they all turned out O.K. I guess I was just lucky. Like Fred, I'm somewhat cautious about some things I see there, but that's mainly because it is so wide open. Half the time you really don't know who you are really dealing with. Usually, though, you do have the option to contact the seller first, so it doesn't have to be totally blind faith. In any event, if you have any significant concerns, you should probably follow Fred's suggestion and get some sort of assurance that you have recourse. You should probably do that with any 2nd hand acquisition, regardless of where you get it. I think Ebay has some sort of problem resolution process, but I don't know how effective it is since I've never had to use it. If it has any value at all, it may be better to buy there than on some other venues. However, I think the first rule of any such transaction should be to have at least some idea as to who you are dealing with. If it's some phantom, hiding behind some obtuse ID, you don't have much upon which to place your faith. I also have another rule--When in doubt, pass! If you can't get the assurances that make you reasonably comfortable, I'd let the deal go. Except in rare instances, there is almost surely going to be another equally reasonable deal, if not better, coming down the pike. Personally, I have t o keep reminding myself of this last rule. It's hard not to get somewhat excited (and possibly foolish) when you see a good deal come along. I recommend using THR 2 or 3 for most signals, and THR 1 for very weak signals. These fixed settings usually work better than AUTO. Both stations generating machine generated CW. I'm also thinking that these stations are using contest spacing of characters which may be confounding. In WINKEY and N1MM the word spacing for contest spacing is 6 dits/wordspace instead of normal 7. Admittedly these are really short exchanges and the time to lock on is really short. However, my guess is that these are the exact conditions some guys are using the decoder for. A longer rag chewing K9 at 28wpm did decode OK but was not spectacular. Although his signal was strong, characters were dropped. He seemed to be using normal spaced CW. [Elecraft] [K3] RTTY digital setup issue
Recently I switched to a new MicroHam microkeyer 2 from the USB 3 product and have had some issues with DM780 transmitting solid RTTY signals with accuracy from my K3. It appears that when in Data A mode on the K3 my RTTY transmission is putting erroneous characters in place of the ones I want transmitted. For example, a recent RTTY contact on 20m with PT0S had them copying me as AC6ZZ instead of AK6ZZ. I tried continuing to transmit my correct callsign but they read it incorrectly a few time after initial contact and now I have this error permanently in their log (good thing I have another verified contact with them). This issue with RTTY has now happened on multiple occasions with other stations and I am perplexed. I am not sure if this is a MicroHam issue with the microkeyer 2 or a K3 issue or a Dm780 issue though with the USB 3 I had zero issue with RTTY and DM780 so I am wondering if I have a configuration issue with the MicroHam MK2 setup or have my K3 in wrong digital mode. [Elecraft] [KX3] Mobile install change of plans
I have recently decided against installing my KX3 in my mobile as I cannot seem to provide it a stable enough environment for it to operate. My Silverado seems to have issues. I have decided to instead install my K3 1391 as my mobile and over the past couple days it has been operating flawlessly in the truck. We will be building a custom console for it and my MicroHam USB 3. Re: [Elecraft] Change to KX3 RF board at #2500
Thanks for sharing this information as I would like to send up my KX3 serial 847 to Elecraft for this modification. I must be living under a rock because this is the first I heard of this mod. Keith AK6ZZ Sent from my iPhone please excuse typos On Nov 13, 2012, at 8:41 AM, Dave Lankshear d...@lanks.plus.com wrote: Since my query received no response, I kept digging and found some info on the KX3 Yahoo reflector and together with snippets from those kind souls who sent emails direct to me, thanks guys, I got a better picture. Seemingly, the changeover was at #2045 and involved a change in the RF board in response to QST's December 2012 review comments about very slightly lower dynamic range on 160 and 80 metres. The modified RF board apparently sorts that out and there's also a low pass filter added to the BNC antenna connector that now has a tiny PCB and a toroid attached. I asked about it because I'm assembling a KX3 for a friend and wanted to know whether the kit had the new or old RF board. Fortunately, he's well in time and it sports the new RF board and BNC socket. Apparently, Elecraft will update the KX3 for $49 but it's implied that you have to send the entire KX3 to them. That's pretty hard on those outside the bottom 48 but my buddy's happy because it doesn't affect him. If his KX3 had been pre-#2045 and he'd wanted the upgrade, I would have tried to beg an exchange PCB, rather like the DSP upgrade on the K3, as I have the confidence to take things apart and the ability to get 'em back together again (mostly) HI! Re: [Elecraft] Small HF amp suggestions
I would be careful with the RM Italy amps. I have not been able to get mine to operate properly with the KX3 in my mobile. Lots of spurious RF issues and we are super well grounded with ferrites/torroids everywhere. For now I am putting in an older Icom mobile until the 100W amp from elecraft comes out. It is a bummer but mega mobile is a little challenged at the moment. I may end up using the KX3 on 6m with the mirage amp so two rigs in the truck. Not optimal but I cannot let my KX3 hang on the shelf. Keith AK6ZZ Sent from my iPhone please excuse typos On Nov 6, 2012, at 7:02 PM, Jack Berry we...@yahoo.com wrote: Thanks for the responses. Re: [Elecraft] Need Headphone recommendations for K3
