The nightly doesn't flash. However, the signature is not verified. It

Well, the log is very clear: The passphrase passed to GnuPG is wrong. Do
you have special characters in your passphrase (umlauts, accented

Well, in Thunderbird every account can have multiple identities attached
to it. It's a bit difficult to see them all, the corresponding dialog is
not easy to find.

Go to account settings, select your account. In the lower right just
above the "Ok" button there's a button "Manage identities". A list of
all identities attached to this account is displayed. Each identity can
have it's own settings, which you can reach if you press the "Edit"
button. You can also delete unnecessary identities.

What happens, if you close and restart Thunderbird? Are there gpg or
gpg2 processes active before you try to edit the draft? To find out,
open the windows task manager and sort by application name.

GnuPG found that your key was not accessible. Did you cancel the

Enigmail does not know (and can't know) where email drafts are stored.
Many people use IMAP draft folders on the server, so not encrypting
drafts is a safety risk, that's why this feature was introduced.

This is correct. I'm sorry, I wasn't clear enough. I think the 2 digit

1.1.2000. Same could go for the late 19-nineties as opposed to 2090 up.

This is indeed a TB issue. Just tried with 54.0.b1, see attachment.

1/1/00 shown in the attachment is in reality a key with expiry date
shown by GnuPG as "expires: 2099-12-31"

This should be reported against TB.

There is automatic behaviour, scanning mails in the background, done by
Thunderbird processes. This triggers Enigmail decryption.

You usually solve this kind of trouble by adding a passphrase caching
time. Enigmail -> Preferences, "Basic" tab, "Remember passphrase for x
minutes of idle time." Select x.

Not only you, but also they need an OpenPGP key pair and suitable
software. And each of you need to have (and verify) the public key of

You can only communicate securely with those who have a suitable setup

each others public keys.

You have to tell Enigmail to use the last generated key. Right now, it
uses the first it can find - and that's the old one.

You should open the settings of the account you want to use with
encryption. Then select "OpenPGP security".

Next, use the "Use specific OpenPGP key ID" should be selected. Click on
the "Select key..." button. A key listing should open. Select the key
you want to use.

No, it's not relevant to know this. They can save the key - which

right software. Then they can import it.

As Doug wrote: If you haven't used them (nothing encrypted to them) and
not send them elsewhere, just delete all you don't need any longer.

If I were you, I'd try to find out why some of the files in the ~/.gnupg
directory were owned by root. This is NOT the behaviour of a standard setup.

This is all to avoid such a painful recovery again and maybe can help
others to run into the same situation as you.

No, under these conditions gpg can't work satisfactory. Please repair
the permissions of your ~/.gnupg directory.

chmod -R u+rwx ~/.gnupg
chmod -R go-rwx ~/.gnupg

This can also be done via your file managers GUI.

This is all very strange. To find the root of your problems, we would
need to see the debug log not only during startup, but during the launch
of Enigmails key manager. Sorry to bug you for more and more debugging

So please, restart Thunderbird, and immediately after it is accessible,
start Enigmails key manager. Then store the log. Thanks for your
cooperation.

Enigmail together with gpg2.1 can display EC Curve based keys perfectly.

This looks all unproblematic. Enigmail finds gpg2 and will use it. There
should be no problem at all when using Enigmail. To clarify what has
happend, would you please check the output of the following commands:

gpg -K

and

gpg2 -K

(remind that K is a capital letter). If the outcome is different, then
you generated your key with one gpg version, Enigmail uses the other and
they have different storage systems.

Enigmail does not publish your public key without your consent.

Try to open Enigmails key management. Select "Reload key cache". Is
there still no key pair (keys in bold and pub/sec in the Type column)
displayed? If not, Enigmail has a communication problem with GnuPG.

No. Enigmail uses GnuPG for key storage as well as for all cryptographic
operations.

Having an expiry date is not a bad idea. I once was glad that an
unusable, but uploaded key had an expiry date set. If it is near, then
you can easily extend the expiry period. Enigmail will tell you when the
expiry is near. You then can decide what to do.

As Doug said: If they were never used and are not uploaded or sent
anywhere, just delete them.

The next thing to do is to tell Enigmail to use the last generated key.
You should open the settings of the account you want to use with
encryption. Then select "OpenPGP security". The checkbox "Enable OpenPGP
support" should be selected.

Next, use the "Use specific OpenPGP key ID" should be selected. Click on
the "Select key..." button. A key listing should open. Select the key
you want to use.

Do you have two accounts or one account with two identities? If you have
two accounts, Alexander's reply is sufficient.

If you have configured one account with two (or more) identities, then
you have to go through all these identities. Go to: Tools -> Accounts ->
Select your account -> Click on "Manage Identities". A popup dialog
comes up. Then select - one after another - all your identities you want
to use with Enigmail by clicking on "Edit", selecting the "OpenPGP
Security" tab and making the approtiate settings.

This UI design is given by Thunderbird and in my eyes, well, lets say
not intuitive. Too many settings are hidden under a tiny button.

Restarting Thunderbird is not necessary after key relevant actions

A broken signature shows that the content (signed content or the
signature) was modified between the sending process and the receiving
process. You cannot say which part if you cannot compare the sent
original and the received copy.

If, however, you receive on different ends, and only one copy didn't
verify correctly, this proves that the disturbance was on the way to
only this special receiving end.

A typical disturbance breaking the signature could be a folded line in
the message text.

Inline PGP format is usually much more vulnerable, PGP/MIME format
provides more resistance against this problem.

Your keys may not have the right "ownertrust" setting after importing
them. Please first go to the Enigmail key management, select your key
pair (it's showing up in bold, does it?) and select Edit -> Set Owner
Trust. A dialog pops up. Please select "I trust ultimately", as this is
your key pair and you certainly trust your own signature :-)

Enigmail does not need any of those directives in gpg.conf to work
properly. The other way round: they lead to problems if you e.g. change
keys and forget about old entries in gpg.conf.

If you ADD such an entry in gpg.conf and it fixes things for you shows
that something is misconfigured in your Enigmail setup. So, if you don't
mind, I'll ask the other two questions again:

Do you have a per-recipient-rule for your email address? Did you specify
the new key in account settings?

And another one: Did you specify the new key for all identities of the
account(s) configured to use with Enigmail?

This is a practicable workaround.

But: Enigmail claims to be a comprehensive user interface. As such, we
should display at least the long key-Id or better the fingerprint
instead of the short prior to importing.

This sounds as if the content-type is wrong. Can you please display the
message source (CTRL-U on Windows) and search for lines beginning with
Content-Type

There should be a line like:

Content-Type: text/html;

If you have multiple lines beginning with "Content-Type", then we would
need to see the MIME structure. The best way to analyze would be to
forward such a message as attachment(!) to me. No worries, I cannot
decrypt it, nor would I publish confidential details.

Just tested: enigmail-1.9-branch imports a key from file as well as

Yes, that will happen when you try to install the Enigmail XPI in a
current (49.0.1) firefox.

But: The package format clearly specifies which Mozilla platforms the
.XPI is compatible with. I consider it a bug of Firefox not to clarify
the platform conformity before checking the presence and validity of the
signature. A good error handling would present the user with the following:

| Hey, I have detected two problems when trying to install the XPI

|
| 1. It is not compatible with FF xx, but only with TB (version range)
| and SM (version range)
|
| 2. It is not verified (misses an internal signature by $CA).

That should even fit on a smartphone screen.

This is probably the culprit. Just to be sure: have you unchecked the
option in Enigmail preferences -> Advanced Tab -> "Only download
attachments when opened"?

You may have to enable "Display Expert Settings and Menus" in the
"Basic" tab to reach the "Advanced" tab.

Yes. Enigmail has an Backup and Restore feature. It not only transfers
keys, but also all settings. On the old machine, go to Enigmail ->
Preferences. Select the "Backup/Restore" Tab on the right. Push "Export
Settings and Keys". Select a file. You might be asked to enter the
passphrase of your private key(s).

Transfer this file to the new computer. There, go to Enigmail ->
Preferences. Select the "Backup/Restore" Tab on the right. Push "Restore
Settings and Keys". Select the transferred file. You're done.

You may have to select your old key pair to be used for your mail account.

You didn't do anything wrong. The Enigmail Setup wizard couldn't
download the necessary GnuPG package - for unkonwn reasons.

You can do this manually instead. Fetch
https://files.gpg4win.org/gpg4win-vanilla-2.3.2.exe and start it.

After that, please restart the Enigmail setup wizard - it will detect
the existing GnuPG installation and use it automatically.

Hope this helps!

Mailman (a mailing list software) in earlier versions had problems with
PGP/MIME signatures. This list is using version 2.1.20 which is known to
work. Can't talk about other software.

If your list(s) are using mailman, you could persuade the administrator
to upgrade. If it's using other software, inline signatures may be the
way to go.

This may happen, when some mail servers add a line break within the long
line. This invalidates inline signatures.

Yes, you would, but it isn't Thunderbird...

Depends - some people have experienced this, some haven't.

Best choice is to use PGP/MIME - it doesn't have this problem. It's
always better to avoid problems than to find and optimize workarounds.
Which of your mail contacts cannot use PGP/MIME? Can you convince them
to use newer software which is PGP/MIME capable?

To give an answer for all: The key in question has a "preferred

Sorry to hear that. The observed long or hanging key generation might be
caused by a slow machine, a machine running out of entropy (like a
virtual machine), or it might be due to a bug.

In order to separate the reason, we need more infomation; could you
please report the following:

- Machine (just whether it's new or older than lets say 5 years),
- Virtual or real machine
- Operating system
- Enigmail version
- GnuPG version

Enigmail is quite smart in detecting the right gpg command.

- Please try to locate your Thunderbird profile directory.
- Close Thunderbird
- Rename (not delete!) the file named "xulstore.json" to e.g.
  "xulstore.json.bak"
- Start Thunderbird

After this, the layout will look different. Do you now see the decrypt
button?

This method has some collateral damage: Your folder sorting and
activated columns has been lost and must be reestablished. But sometimes
there is a wrong entry in "xulstore.json" and it makes buttons invisible
and other bugs of that sort.

If it doesn't help you, close Thunderbird and delete "xulstore.json",
and rename "xulstore.json.bak" to "xulstore.json".

In any case, please report back!

Ludwig

The default in Enigmail 1.9x has been changed to send mails in PGP/MIME
format. You can change that at Account Settings -> OpenPGP Security,
remove the check at "Use PGP/MIME by default". Do that for all accounts
and all identities that have enabled OpenPGP support.

But please be aware that there are other senders out there that send in
PGP/MIME format. You should look out for a new software that can deal
with PGP/MIME.

This option has been removed with Enigmail 1.8 - generally, not only for
Linux or Ubuntu - as it made a lot of people complain that they couldn't
read their mails they sent any more.

It is now a hidden in the preferences:
extensions.enigmail.encryptToSelf, which defaults to true.

This is most probably an issue of the Pinentry, supplied by gpg4win. Do
you have the newest version of gpg4win installed? I remember that
"cancel behaviour" got better with gpg4win 2.3.0.

You can also get support in one of their community forums/mailinglists:

It seems, your keyring files are corrupt or not properly accessible by

Did you use some special folder for storing them? On a unixoid system,
they should be in a folder named .gnupg in your home directory. What is

The "DEL" key should work on all platforms. If not, try to repair the
folder: Right click on the folder, select "properties", select "Gerneral
information" tab, click on "Repair Folder".

You can set the preference for selecting HTML mail versus plaintext
separately for each account: Tools -> Account Settings -> (Select your
account), then Composition & Addressing, check or uncheck "Compose
messages in HTML format".

However, be careful not to send signed only messages in inline PGP
format, as these tend to give "bad" signatures. Better uses PGP/MIME format.

Well, this isn't a dumb question at all. This is the essential question
of implementing an initial trust relationship to the software you want
to use.

If you're installing GPG4WIN using the Enigmail Setup wizard then it
will do this for you, it will verify the checksum.

If you're doing download and installation manually, you need an
executable program to calculate the checksum, there is no preinstalled
one on windows.

If you're feeling this is too scary for you (use a downloaded program to
verify the integrity of a downloaded program), then you should ask a
friend who is well versed in doing such tasks.

This preference now seems to be hidden in Thunderbird, unfortunately.

Go to Preferences -> Advanced -> General, click on "Config Editor",
confirm the warning. A listing of all preferences appears. Type "wrap"
into the search field. The important setting is:

mailnews.wraplength default integer 72

Do you have the same value? If not, try to set it to 72 and repeat the
failed procedure (just forward the mail to yourself).

> Enigmail 1.8.2 thunderbird 38.3.0 gpg4win of yesterday

There is some logic in Enigmail to avoid signature verification errors
due to wrapping effects, but it relies on the Thunderbird setting.

Yes. If you want HTML or combined HTML+plaintext mail, always stick to
PGP/MIME. There may be mail clients which cannot cope with this, but
they're on retreat ;-)

Which version of Enigmail are you using?

A "failed signature verification" means, that either mail text or
signature was changed after the signing process. As there's no
transmission process involved in your case, a line wrap issue may have
happened. Inline PGP format is susceptible for such failures. Please
either check your wrap settings or use PGP/MIME format.

It is :-) A changed per-recipient rule does not need a restart to be
recognized. If Enigmail would have required a Thunderbird restart, it
would have told you. I think, the only restart in conjunction with
Enigmail is necessary after its installation itself - just like every
other add-on.

Well, actually, I must admit that I didn't look right: When viewing
Doug's message, these markers are _not_ displayed. However, they are
displayed when viewing _your_ message. Difference: Doug's is in PGP/MIME
format, and yours is inline. The signed content is reaching until the
horizontal line, but this is not indicated as it should be. I think we
discussed this earlier on this list, but I cannot find an open bug right
now.

This should get better when using PGP/MIME format, but this can lead to
very confusing results if there are readers on the list with no PGP/MIME
aware mail clients. On this list, however, PGP/MIME is welcome and
encouraged - we all should have the right software.

All your messages in this thread were in inline format except the
message with the picture (dated Wed, 23 Sep 2015 12:12:34 +0100), which
was in PGP/MIME format, maybe because Enigmail asked you when attaching
the picture.

You can change the default format in account settings, OpenPGP tab.
Check or uncheck "Use PGP/MIME by default".

Additional to that, you may have a per-recipient rule for this mailing

If yes, is the PGP/MIME setting at "Never" or "Yes, if selected in

Wow, I like that very much! This goes into the same direction of the two
buttons (sign/encrypt) in the compose window which got really good
feedback. It's logical, consequent and simple. You get an overview on
first glance.

Don't know yet how to display these three items withing the message
header, in a graphical sense. I'll make a suggestion.

This UI change covers about 90% of daily use and Enigmail can implement
it independently and instantly.

But I think, we've still got to look into the wording of key details.
One of the most misunderstood terms there is "ownertrust". Also - as
already pointed out - "validity" is not clear. And: We "sign" messages,
but until today we also "sign" a key/certificate, expressing that it
belongs to the promised person. The double use of the term "signature"
has led to quite frequent misunderstandings. We really should use
"certify" for the latter.

These new terms should also be used within GnuPG and other OpenPGP clients.

After thinking about this for a time, I'd rather suggest to completely
remove the feature "Display untrusted keys".

It is misleading; it doesn't do what it promises: to show "trusted"
keys. Trusted keys are "valid" keys. Instead, the filter works on
"Ownertrust".

Varying ownertrust of a specific key doesn't make this key more or less
trustworthy. Instead, the ownertrust value of a specific key influences
the weight, by which certifications done by this key are regarded in
trust calculations for OTHER keys.

For me, suppressing the view of all keys I haven't assigned an
ownertrust value doesn't give any value.

I can't set an ownertrust on a key when I haven't met this person in
real life and judged how carefully his person does identity+key
fingerprint checks. This would ideally be done by judging how this
person did check MY identity and fingerprint. In this case, we would
have exchanged certifications on each others key.

What I'd regard as useful: A function which only displays keys I have
signed AND which have not set an ownertrust value. This would be a
reminder to do that.

Could we please take this discussion to another, more appropriate place?

GnuPG-devel or GnuPG-users appear to be better suited to me.

Keys with validity hidden when "Display invalid keys" unchecked:

  'i':invalid
  'e':expired
  'r':revoked
  'D':disabled

Enigmail does not use the --export-ownertrust, but instead it uses
--list-keys and --with-colons. The documentation of all output is in the
doc/Details of GnuPG source code, which for "Ownertrust" is quite fuzzy
compared with the rest.

Enigmail should hide the following codes if "Display untrusted keys" is
unchecked:

- / Unknown (i.e. no value assigned)
n / Untrusted

I think we should both hide the "unknown"/"undefined" and
"untrusted/never". I don't think, we should change the labelling before
the OpenPGP summit comes up with a new unified language.

After some tests I can observe similar behaviour if I uncheck "Display
invalid keys": There still are a lot of keys with "-" or "unkown" in the
key validity column. It is not clear where the limit for filtering the
display is defined. However, unchecking "display untrusted keys" seems
to work for me. All keys with "-" are hidden, but I don't have any keys
with "unknown" owner trust, which might conceal the bug for me.

I'll look into this.

No, that's not ok. Enigmail claims it would need the key, but 1 line
later says "Untrusted good signature from " which it couldn't
without having the key. So, this is contradicting and weird indeed.

Please do NOT give such advice. People really shouldn't sign other keys
without having verified their correctness.

Is this a message sent from you or sent from another person? What
happens, if you re-enable your old key? Disabling of an old key is not a
good idea if you want to decrypt stuff which is encrypted using this key.

Well, as said: You must use the key for which this message has once been
encrypted to. If it is disabled, it cannot be used and you get an error
message.

Do you get prompted for the passphrase or does the error prompt happen
before?

Is this the keyId of your old (disabled) or of your new key? Does the
undesired behaviour go away if you comment out this line (put a # at the
first column)?

The key to decrypt is always selected automatically. The key-Id of the
receiver(s) is/are embedded in the message. You cannot decrypt a given
message with another (newer) key. What makes you think it Enigmail looks
for the wrong key? Please give us the exact error message.

Do you have any additional settings like "encrypt-to" in your gpg.conf file?

Please do not post links to sites with generalized - and probably
machine generated - advice for windows applications only. It is not
helpful at all, as the OP is obviously on a unixoid system.
