Re: [Felvtalk] 4 month old kitten with Feline Leukemia

2015-06-29 Thread Sally Dwyer
Hi Kathleen,
I have used LTCI and I live in Hamilton, Ontario.  My cat was IFA positive for
FeLV (meaning persistently infected as the virus was in bone marrow) and he
went negative a few months after starting the LTCI, so in my opinion, it is
definitely worth a shot for your little Oreo.  Your vet can call Terry
Beardsley at LTCI and he will help explain the paper work.  Should only take a
week for Health Canada to make an exception.  Otherwise LTCI can be shipped to
a vet in the states virtually overnight.  Hope this helps and best of luck with
your little guy.  just curious, where in Canada are you from?

#yiv7320785890 p {margin:0;}Hi, I am looking for advice about our little Oreo.
We adopted him at 9 weeks from a rescue group. His mom was a stray who was ill
when she had her kittens. The kittens were eventually bottle fed and had a
rough start in life, but then seemed to recover and were adopted out. About two
weeks ago, our Oreo started to show signs of illness. His inner third eyelid
came out, and then he started running a fever. I took him to the Rescue's vet,
and she gave me antibiotics and some metacam to bring down the fever. She said
the mom had been tested for a bunch of viruses, including feline leukemia and
came back negative, so there was no reason to test Oreo. A week later, he was
worse so I took him to another vet and she tested him and told me he tested
positive for feline leukemia. Up until yesterday, he seemed to still have a
fairly good appetite but was sleeping a lot and showing symptoms of upper
respiratory infection. Today he is uninterested in food and seems much worse. I
was wondering if anyone had any suggestions that would help, or should I just
accept that there's nothing that can be done? We were considering trying the
LCTI drug but we live in Canada so we would have to travel into the States to
get it. It would be about a 3.5 hour drive there and would be hard on Oreo, as
he hates the car. Has anyone used LCTI and had any success with it? Is there
anything else I can do for Oreo now, to help him feel better, like steroids?
Any suggestions or advice would be very much appreciated.
Thanks,Kathleen

Re: [Felvtalk] Please help! Anemic felv kitty, what can be done??

2015-03-01 Thread Sally Dwyer
Hi there,
Sounds like you are doing and have so much to help your little guy.  I was just
curious to know if they have done a pcr to determine if there is a mycoplasma?
I know you are treating presumptively with Doxy for this, but it would be good
to know.
My guy, Rumi had a pcv of 8 three days after we got him from the SPCA  - he did
have a mycoplasma and was also diagnosed with felv and fiv as well as immune
mediated hymoltic anemia.  He is still with us 2 + years latter.  We gave him
doxy, 10 mg of prednislone a day and a gastro protectant.  His PCV climbed very
slowly over the course of 3 weeks. The transfusions were necessary even though
I remember feeling like we were pouring water into a bucket with a hole in it.
We crossed our fingers and prayed that the doxy and pred would eventually seal
up the hole.

We started LTCI a year latter (wish I had started sooner) when he went IFA (in
the bone marrow) positive.  I live in Canada and the internists we were working
with were very negative about LTCI and had me sign a statement acknowledging
that they did not recommend using it.6 months latter  we had him tested again
and he was IFA negative!!!

I have used Dr. Donna Spector as a consultant .  She is extremely competent -
consults with upwards of (40 vets a day) and she recommended the LTCI.  You can
check out her website - she will look at all the medical records, do a phone
consult with you and also talk to/make recommendations to your vet.  I find her
to be a wonderful combination of very sharp and compassionate as well as
affordable.  She has often picked up on things that other vets have missed and
I continue to run lab results by her

Terry Beardsly, director and discoverer of LTCI is also very approachable.  He
has lots of documented cases of cats responding very quickly in terms of PCV
numbers ( in a couple of days).  Perhaps you can give him a call at Tcyte (800
483-2104 ext 88) and get his recommendations.  His wife Gale does the ordering
end of things and they have shipped to my vet same day.   I kind of figure at
this point you don't have a lot to lose.

Hope this is helpful  and I will keep you in my thoughts,
Sally

Time is of the essence for us and I need to know if there's something else
that can be done for my sweet little just-turned-one-year-old boy.  He had a
PCV of 12% and received a blood transfusion, his PCV went up a little, then
back down, then up to 17% over the course of 24 hours.  He was put on 7.5 mg.
prednisone, 25 mg. mycophenolate, 18.75 mg. plavix (to prevent clots from the
pred/mycophenolate combo), 25 mg. doxycycline (in case of mycoplasma
infection), and 5 mg. famotidine to prevent GI issues from the pred.
His anemia is currently non-regenerative with two most likely potential causes:
he was agglutination positive, a sign of immune mediated red blood cell
destruction; he may have leukemia in the marrow.  We did not do a bone marrow
aspirate because cancer would be too advanced at this stage, the severe anemia
indicating this to be the case.  The doctor said it could take a few days of
immunosuppressant therapy for the bone marrow to respond.
Two days after the PCV of 17% we had a recheck and it is now down to 14%.  He
is going to receive another transfusion.
I need to know as quickly as possible: Is there anything else that can be done
at this stage?  I was looking into treatment with TCyte (LTCI), but my vet said
it would be a waste of time and money.  I'd read on a forum that a severely
anemic felv kitty responded very well to the drug and I would've been willing
to give it a shot.  My vet is of the opinion that I should not have bothered
with this second transfusion (he had to go to emergency hospital for it) and
the TCyte is hogwash.  I'm sitting here feeling hopeless and wondering if
this really is the end and what do I do now if he doesn't respond to the
transfusion.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.  No sugar coating necessary, but
please be gentle.  If nothing can be done, what can I do for him to keep him
happy and comfortable?  Will he need euthanized or will he pass peacefully?

 Hi everyone,

ago, after my FeLV+ cat, Ember, bit Callie when she accidentally got
into Ember's room. Callie has had soft stools for the last four days,
and there was blood on her stool on Saturday. Since Callie hasn't been
vaccinated since she was a kitten, she probably has no immunity from
that route. She is 7 years old, and I'm hoping that she'll be able to
deal with the virus better having a more mature immune system. People
talk about age resistance with FeLV, but I don't think it can be
 relied on.

I'm dealing with an incredible amount of guilt over this. I love Callie
like I love Ember. She's one of my favorite cats ever. It was my fault
that she got into Ember's room, and it's my fault that Ember is still
here with my parents. It's also my fault that we didn't vaccinate
Callie, as I worried about vax site sarcoma for Callie, and the few
run-ins that had happened between the two cats over the last seven years
were always brief and friendly. I also feel guilty as, if I'd just
gotten in the room (quite literally) a minute or so sooner, this
 wouldn't have happened.

Please pray that Callie can fight the virus so that she isn't
persistently infected, and please pray for me. I'm dealing with a lot.

[Felvtalk] (no subject)

2013-04-05 Thread Sally Dwyer
Hi Folks,

My kitty Rumi was just diagnosed with Felv and Fiv today.  He had been treated
for a severe anemaia over the past few weeks (transfusions and antibiotics +
pred) and as recently as 3 weeks ago was FIV and Felv negative on blood samples.

His PCV went from 8 to 26 today - a great recovery.  My daughter an I noticed
some swollen lymph nodes yesterday and when we showed them to the vets today
they said that his prognosis is grave given that we now know he is Felv
positve. They beleive there is probably an underlying fast growing cancer
responsible for the nodes and have said evenif they find it and treat with
chemo he will only have 4 or 5 months at best ( they said take the weekend to
think about it).  So hard to beleive when you see him running around and
purring in your lap and gaining weight.  We are pretty broken up about it - he
is an awesome 2 year old cat that we got from a shelter only a month ago.
Anyone have experiences that are similar or other thoughts?

 Hi everyone,

A few of you may remember me from years ago. My Ember tested positive for
FeLV almost exactly seven years ago, in 2006. She was four years old then.
There have been a few minor illnesses since that wouldn't have been unusual
for a non-FeLV cat, but she's otherwise been very healthy.

Ember's white blood cell count has been persistently low. Other than when
she's had a few colds (when it shot up to around 7 to 7.5), it's been
around 3.75 to 4.15. She went to the vet two days ago for a regular
checkup, and her count is only a bit over 3. Ember's vet prescribed
Clavamox, I assume, as a prophylactic against infection.

Needless to say, this is scary news. Ember is almost 11, and we're
probably heading toward a time when any cat's immune system would cease to
be as efficient as it once was. For a FeLV+ cat, that's obviously
dangerous. I'm wondering if anyone has had recent experience with any
treatments that help stimulate white blood cell production. Please let me
 know what you think.

Best wishes to all of you and your cats,

I know many people who do TNR and have dedicated volunteers taking care of
them, even trapping for vet visits. Personally, I don’t like some of the
ways that TNR cats are provided or NOT provided for. Some groups spay cats
and release them almost immediately, even in freezing weather (when it is a
known fact that healing is seriously hindered) , and such consequences as
infections, and even disembowelment due to ruptures.
Yes, one should expect cats at such a ranch to be provided with medical
 care!
I can’t even imagine how many people are required to seriously care for
 700 cats!

. Fix the momma and you stop the spread of the disease in a feral
colony. I also do TNR and manage 2 feral colonies. The adult males and
females are released back after recovery from their surgeries. Males 1 day
and females 3-4 days as long as they are doing OK. The kittens I tame and
try to adopt out. The only way to combat PETA is to responsibly manage
these feral/hard stray colonies. My oldest feral is a 7+ year old male who
is only happy outside in his colony. We can't take all these feral/hard

colonies once they have been spayed/neutered. At least that way the
population is controlled.

Unless I missed a post I was not complaining. Sorry if you took it that way.
I have a Masters degree in horticulture. I stated before did not start
having a problem with deer until a few years ago. Everything I plant now is
deer resistant. I am not giving up my daylily collection, because I have
over 500 varieties. I started collecting before the deer changed their
geazing pattern. I know they will eat some and I accept that.

My cats love to lay amongst the daylilies. It gives the cover from the sun.

OFF TOPIC RE: DEER I think there is another forum for this. I am sorry for
posting here.

Natalie,

Hold on. I am not blaming the deer. I was over simplifying, so I apologize.
I have oppossum raccoons and squirels too. I battle the deer beacuse they
eat my daylilies. I have lived here for 25 years and five years ago the deer
became a problem. NOT their fault but the fault of man. I will not get into
that. I do not think the deer need to be shot or anything like that. I chose
repellants to hopefully get them to change their browsing patterns. They are
creatures of habit. I felt sorry for them two winters ago when there was no
nut crop in the fall and we had lots of snow here in VA. They did a number
on plants they rarely touched in the past so I know they were hungry.

Ticks are the worst near wooded areas and in the woods. They are in tall
weeds, and shrubs. We have lots of deer and deer ticks, the smaller ticks
carry lyme disease. It even the nymph stage can tramsmit lyme. The deer
population has exploded here and so have the ticks. Last year the cats would
get in a nest of then and be covered with the small nymph stage. They would
engorge and I would have hundreds crawling on my bed. I uses a lint roller
and duct tape to get them up, but what a pain. They are not as bad this year
but I started using the Frontline earlier. Last year I had to rush out and
get it where I could. I did not get the cheapest price, but I still bought
 the dog size.

As for Revolution I was not going to go there but I did not have a problem
with it. I have heard it is safer then the other fles controls, because it
works in a different way. I am not doubting what your vet says. Poison is
poison. Sometimes a cat will lose hair where it is applied and it says that.
I did have this happen with one of my FeLV cats. He was the cat who probably
had Feline infectious anemia which is transmitted by fleas so for him better
to make sure there are no fleas it only takes one flea to infect a cat, and
a feline leukemia postive cat cannot fight off the infection.

I have not used the nematodes but I have been interested in doing so. I do
not have a lawn and fleas tend to live in grassy areas. They just feed on
our pets.

Sharon,

I used Immunoregulin on two of my FELV cats. One was very symptomatic with
fevers and anemia. The other was aymptomatic. It got Junior over the hump
and he lived another two and a half years. I wish I had used it the whole
time, butI am not sure the end result would have been different. Tiny on the
other hand never really became symptomatic until his last day and he died
suddenely. He proabably threw a clot and it may not have had any thing to do
with the virus, He died Christmas day very suddenly. He only lived a few
months after the
the cats were diagnosed.

Good luck,

Sally

I have been reading that ImmunoRegulin has been quite effective but I want

My experience was 4 years ago but I remember like it was yesterday. Junior
ran on and off high fevers. As high as 106.5. It was actually probably early

fevers and his anemia which was treated with antibiotics never came back. He
lived about 2 years after being diagnosed. Like many have said euthanasia
was suggested. Now he was sick on and off over those years and we just
treated what came along. In the end he had fluid and labored breathing and I
knew he had no fight left.

Others here have tried other protocols. We also used Transfer factor Plus

Dear Kim,

Your little baby just couldn't do it any more.  That's all.  Her little
precious
life just expended itself.  All the while she did have life in her, she had the
warmth of your loving touch and the softness of your lips against her too, as
surely you kissed her a thousand times or more in her brief little life.  Love
is our only true form of communication with these precious creatures God has
blessed us with, so you no doubt talked her little ears off. :)

I know you are suffering and questioning yourself.  That's natural.  Just don't
burden yourself with too much of the latter.  You didn't intend any harm upon
her, so your heart is pure.  Please believe that.

I cried for you this morning knowing the pain you are feeling, and my heart
hurts for you.  Let me, and others here, lift you up with our prayers and

Be good to yourself.  Mourn your loss and take your time.  You did your level

are hurting because of your pain.  You aren't alone and I honor you for the
help you gave her and continue to give to the other furbabies that you have now

Dear Kim,
I am so sorry about your kitten's death!  I'm sure that at one time or
another, each one of us who has dealt with sick cats and kittens, takes the
blame for their death.  You did all you could! Your kitten seems to have had
some serious health problems and was probably underweight because of them;
at 2 months old, she should ideally have weighed almost 2 lbs.  I would
probably question whether the vet gave her the right dose of dewormer etc.
Don't blame yourself...you did NOT kill the kitten! It's so natural for us
to question ourselves when something goes wrong!

I have just gone through a kitten death two weeks ago.  A practically
newborn kitten was found in a window-well filled with water after a heavy
rain.  Someone looked down and saw a tiny orange kitten - under water except
for the head.  A call went out to anyone who might have a nursing mother - I
did and still do.  The kitten was probably 4 days old by then...our kittens
were already 4 weeks old and gigantic compared to this baby.  The mother was
very willing to accept little Puddles, but he showed no desire to suckI
had to feed him with an eyedropper.  All went well, but after 5 days,
Puddles didn't want to drink as much KMR and started feeling cold, although
I kept him in a small carrier on heated disks for warmth, and fed him every
two hours except for 4 hrs at night. I took him to the vet, and as he
examined him, Puddles died right then and there...his temperature was only
95.6!. I blamed myself for just about everything, but I know that I did what
I could correctly...I have raised so many tiny kittens to adulthood, why not
this one?  Maybe Puddles never got to drink his mother's milk to get any
colostrumswe'll never know.

I am having such a hard time today with my kitten's death.
My little kitten that was 2 months old died last night.  She weighed 3/4 of
a pound.  She was the runt of the litter that I had raised since they were
four weeks old.  She has been a huge challenge for me the month I had her.
My vet first thought she had mega esophagus but then wasn't so sure when she
threw up roundworms.  She had a problem keeping her food down since the very
beginning.  Anyway, Friday, my vet wormed her, and her three siblings.  She
was doing great yesterday until around 7 pm.  I gave her a small bowl of KMR
and shortly afterwards she started having difficulty breathing and was
breathing through her mouth. She had eaten canned kitten food earlier and
was doing fine.
She died while I was holding her trying to give her a sub q injection.  I
don't know what I was thinking.  I know I killed her.  She couldn't breathe
and I was trying to hold her still and evidently I had her in a position
that her breathing worse because she just went limp and died in my hands.
It was so fast that I didn't even get to give her any fluids.  I knew she
was having troubles breathing but yet I held her still and she was unable to
breath because of it.
I'm having a hard time with her death. She was such a sweet kitten and even
though I can't admit it in front of her other three siblings she was my
favorite.
Can anyone explain this to me?  Were the worms fighting the Strongid and
migrating to her lungs making her unable to breathe?  Did the KMR have
something to do with it?
I feel so bad.  When I saw her throw up the worms Thursday night I told her
to hang in there and I would get her all better in the morning after the vet
wormed her but instead I feel like I killed her and did

One by one they have passed on. Chloe was the last - she was 15 or 16,
claws had grown out, and she was having some kidney problems. Fall is so
dry, it seems to be hard on kidney cats.

Chloe was a sweetie and had a soft and gentle passing. I kept covering her
and trying to keep her hydrated and warm, but she said no mom, I don't want
the cover on me. Sleep soft sweet Chloe.

I received the most beautiful kitten on my doorstep this early morning.  She
was a medium haired spotted girl.  Please help me give her a name as she died
on my lap after all efforts failed within 2 hours of her arrival.  Her right
eye was out of the socket and she had obviously received a tremendous blow.
There was tremendous swelling to the right side of her head (this had not
happened recently-I feel that the eye had popped from the socket from the
cranial swelling).  Believe it or not, she was semi-alert and loving, and cried
for help.  Ice packs were applied to reduce the swelling to the brain, and ALL
of the usual veterinary trauma techniques were used in an attempt to save her.
No kitten should die like this.  Please light a candle for her as if she had
been with a loving person for all of her brief life. I can never get the look
of love and hope  she gave me during her treatment from my mind.

Please, please light a candle to light her tiny way.

Subject: [Felvtalk] Lost my FELV Stray dude

Hi I've been lurking a few weeks.  In July I picked up a stray that turned
 out
to be FELV+.  In his few weeks with me he gained a pound, had a cushy bed,
delicious premium canned food, and all the snuggles I had time to give him,
since he lived in the basement while I tried to figure out where he could
 live
(I have 4 cats).  I'd watch movies on the laptop with him on my lap, snoozing
away happily.  He always seemed a little wobbly, and his pupils were always
different sizes.  But he was relatively happy so we kept on.  Last night his
back legs didnt work.  This had happened before, my pet sitter said, but they
always came back on after a while.  But this morning they still didnt
 work.
The vet examined and confirmed that he had tumors pressing on his spinal
 cord.
He was in pain and his entire back end didn't do what he wanted it too.  So
 the
decision was made to let him go.

He'd been living under porches on my block for at least a few months when we
finally caught him.  I'm so glad we did, I cant imagine what a frustrating,
frightening life he'd be having out on the street right now, starving, full
 of
tape worm, and 2 back legs that wont work.  I'm crushed that we couldnt give
 him

a better life, and for longer, but I'm glad we got to him when he needed us,
 and

filled his belly and his heart for a few weeks.  Safe and comfy and within a
foot of food at all times. :)

Anyway, I dont know anything about FELV, this was my first introduction to
 it...

so I dont exactly know how the tumors are related (cancer?)... but I wanted
 to
drop a line to folks who understand.  He wasnt my kitty for long, but he was
 my
 kitty.

I've gotten permission to use (try to!) a shed for Whimsy. I'll put a cage

time, so therefore will have some outdoor exposure still. He's had some
flea treatment at his vet visits but would be due again. He's still
battling ringworm (areas end up healing and new fur grows back) - don't
know if that effects using flea/mite treatment. The vet has been amazed
he's had no visible fleas or mites but now we are in Spring of course.

Re: [Felvtalk] Vaccine

2010-03-27 Thread Sally Davis
HI Lorrie,

Here is a link to recommendations for core vaccines as well as vaccinations
for cat at risk of exposure to FELV.
http://www.catvets.com/uploads/PDF/FINALVaccineTable12.15.pdf. FeLV is not a
core vaccination but for cats at risk it is Still an annual booster. Due to
the economic situation I have not continued this vaccination. I do not have
any positives and the cats I have were mixed. My is natural immunity in
these cats. These are my opinions.

Now that being said many vets think giving a FELV vaccination to a positive
cat can overload the immune
system and therefore do not recommend this. If I am reading you correctly
the cat is already positive. Hope this helps.

Silver is one of these cats and joined my crew after my initial panic over
the FELV outbreak. He had a canine tooth cut off yesterday because he broke
it and it was sideways in his mouth. Seems he has feline resorptive lesion.
He has always had bad breath. He was abanoned in my neighborhood and
starving when I found him. The vet said he was missing other teeth as well.
He is fat and happy now. For some reason when I lose a cat another one shows
up to take it's place. I had lost two cats to this disease when he found my
porch and was no longer intimidated by Ittle Bitty.

I have 10 cats and had I had 11 when the outbreak occurred. Of those cats,
the ones who had one vaccination given by me did not become infected. Part
of that would be bc of natural immunity and part i believe is bc the
original vaccine gave them immunity. Those shots were given 6 or 7 years
before I got a sick cat from a shelter who in turn sickened some of my
recent additions. Since then I still have these same three cats they are all
older now. I feel good about that.

This did not hold true in my case. Tiny was 5 and Junior was 4. Junior had
tested negative earlier in the year and turned positive. Daisy on the other
hand was a kitten and was a love bug to Lionel, the cat who was brought from
the same shelter.I belive he was the source cause he had a URI and tested
positive for FIV and FELV. She has never been sick. She was probably 10
weeks old and repeatedly exposed for months to him when Pumpkin died from
this. That is how I found out what was going on and tested all the cats. I
lost 4 in total. Junior lived the longest just over two years from testing
positive. He was very symptomatic.

aggressively. You will want to retest. I think it is 90 days. The IFA is
more reliable than the snap test.

Thanks for rescuing these babies. Take a breath.

 Hello,

I'm joining this list serv with a heavy heart. We rescued a young Mom cat
and her 4 babies. They appeared healthy for all intents and circumstances.

Mom just tested positive for FeLV, 2 babies also did (one slight positive,
the other one was definitely positive), and 2 tested negative on the Elisa.

I need some help in deciding what to do...

I'd love some feedback, as the Internet only yields so much useful
 information...

 1. If the two kittens tested negative, are they likely negative?

 2. Should the positive kitten be separated from the slightly positive one
 as well?

 3. If Momma is about 6 mos old, how likely is it that she has FeLV,
considering 2 of the babies also tested for it? Is there a chance she too
could fight off the infection? At what point should Mom be retested with the
 PCR or IFA?

 4. What supplements or foods should we feed these kitties, to help them
 fight off the virus?

 5. How long does Mom have to live, if she is confirmed to have FeLV? What
are the alternatives? We rescue a lot of kittens and cats, so she will end
up living in a cage alone unless we can find her a new home, which I doubt
is going to be very likely. We don't have the funds to send her to a
sanctuary, and we also have several FIV positive cats we are sanctuarying.
Space is also an issue, as that is one less cat or litter we can rescue
since she will be in that cage for a long, long time...

I'd appreciate your insights and thoughts.

 Thanks,

 Minnie

So sorry to hear about Casper. I have one cat with leukemia that became
anemic in September of last year. He is still holding his own. He does
have non-regenerative anemia so I asked how it is that his HCT isn't
dropping if he's not making more red blood cells. I guess the spleen and
another organ can make some red blood cells too. Do you know if Casper has
regenerative or non-regenerative anemia? Either way I hope you have lots of
time left. I think it totally depends on what's causing the anemia to begin
with. I asked the internist if non-regenerative anemia is a definite death
sentence. She said there is no way to tell how long Wolfie will continue to
hold his own but she hopes he lives until he's 20. I know that's not going
to happen but it never hurts to hope. We know his odds aren't good now that
the leukemia is in his bone marrow but his odds of living this long weren't
good either and he did. Hoping for the best for Casper.

Re: [Felvtalk] Casper is sick

2010-03-03 Thread Sally Davis
Frank,

I will pray for Casper to be negative. I hope you are able to resolve his
illness quickly. I mixed my cats none of the negatives became positive. Some
of them had exposure to Felv before I knew what was going on. So they
probably had a natural immunity. But fate added two more after this all
started. They were vaccinated and remain healthy. I no longer have any
positives. Unlike others in this group mine did not live long. Only junior
survived for two years,

Years ago however I lost a cat to this disease before testing was routine.
He was at least 11 and I am sure he had it all his life. He was always
somewhat sickly. Best cat I ever had.

I too am more concerned about the panting as is a sign of anemia which these
cats are prone to getting and can kill them. If your cat does have anemia
make sure she is is checked for haemobart which is treatable. It will not
always show up when they test so most choose to treat for even if the test
is negative.

http://www.peteducation.com/article.cfm?c=1+1316aid=292

Junior was panting on his last day. He had fought a long hard fight and was
not up for heroic treatment. His spirit is free and I stay on the group to
offer help when I feel I may have something to add. This group is the reason
he was not euthanized when first diagnosed. He lived about 1.5 years and was
5 when he left me. Tiny is half brother unfortunately only lived a couple
months he too was 5 when he passed on.

Junior also had eye problems but was due to an injury prior to the FELv dx.
He went on to develop a corneal ulcer and glaucoma. He was already blind in
that eye.

Hi, Kathryn. You're right - these folks are the best ever!

When I introduced my very inquisitive, rambunctious, 75 lb. dog to the litter
of kittens I rescued last fall, I had him on a collar and lead, and put him on
a down, stay a lot. The kittens had been here for about 3 weeks, in their own
room, and he was used to their scent and knew something very special was behind
the door. He was very happy to finally see what it was. We took it slowly and
all of the kittens ended up being dog lovers!

You guys are really the best. If I have any further

Re: [Felvtalk] My cat

2009-03-24 Thread SALLY NORDSTROM

When one kitten in a litter I fostered tested positive, my vet said to keep
everyone (my vaccinated cat and stray mom and her litter) together. I was so
scared, but the folks on this list helped me to realize that this disease may
not be as contagious as some think - and my vet concurred. I was lucky - it
was a false positive. But because of the wonderful folks on this list I will
take in another homeless cat and kittens and not worry at all because all of
mine (I kept mom and one of the babies) are vaccinated. Then I will follow my
vet's advice and test mom first, then work from there.

Thanks to everyone on this list - maybe someday all kitties will have homes
regardless of their FeLV status because of your bravery and persistence.

For anyone living in Milwaukee, WI, the Wisconsin Humane Society has programs
for spay/neuter, vaccinations, and food. It makes sense to have these programs
rather than having people surrender their beloved companions - we especially
need our babies when everything is going wrong, and it must be less expensive
to have these programs than to have to find homes for all of the surrendered
pets.

Thanks for the reminder to be extra vigilant about our neighbors with the poor
economy!

thanks for posting this, sue, because the issue of folks
 unable to take care
of their critters right now, elderly or not, is becoming
 huge.

folks, check with your local shelters to see if any of them
 run a pet-food
bank--a lot actually do. there are ani-meals programs in a
 number of places,
that deliver food for animals to homes where the humans
 can't afford to get
the food, or can't get to the store to pick it up. in
 some places, there are
programs that are funded by the United Way--they just
 don't get much
 publicity.

social-service agencies SHOULD know about clients who have
 companion animals
in need, and SHOULD be working with animal-welfare groups
 to help, but it
doesn't happen when case loads aren't overwhelming
 the system, so i'm sure
 it's not now.

sometimes all it takes is stopping long enough to look
 around: if you have
an elderly or disabled neighbor that you know has critters,
 or is feeding
ferals, ask them what kind of food they use because
 you're into coupons, and
you'll keep an eye out (that's not charity, you
 see)--etc etc etc.

Re: [Felvtalk] Lymphocyte T-Cell Immunomodulator

2009-03-03 Thread Sally Davis
Hi Sue

The company that was originally testing the product sold it to Imulan. They
decided to go ahead and market it. Anecdotal evidence shows promise. There
is a lady on another group whose husband is a feline vet and was involved in
some of the original trials. Although no longer involved in the studies he
continues to use it on some of the FELV positive cats that he treats. The
price went up considerably when it sold to Imulan. Testing is very
expensive, so it may never get the testing that one would hope for after all
we are talking about cats. Now before I get jumped on I am being facetious.
But we do know there are people who think that way. Personally if I could
have use it I would have tried. That being said I probalby could not have
afforded it. Maybe your vet can get in on one of the trials if they are
still conducting them.

Subject: URGENT NEED - Neutered Male FIV Cat Needs Home

 Hi,

I had been feeding a stray cat (Chester) all winter, trapped him on
 2/15/09,
and had him neutered, tested for FELV/FIV, vaccinated, and meds applied to
rid him of fleas and worms at the local SPCA. He tested positive at the
SPCA for FIV only. They released him to me and I took him to my vet, where
he has been since Tuesday, 02/24/09.

My vet gave him a complete physical exam and blood analysis and also
retested him for FIV using Western Blot I think as well as the IDEXX SNAP
Antigen test again. Chester is FIV positive. Vet said that he is a
healthy cat and his blood work was otherwise squeaky clean - no infections
 or problems.

FIV cats can only transmit the virus to other cats by a bite wound or
scratch that draws blood. FIV cannot be transmitted to humans or to other
animals. Nevertheless, he must be in a one cat home or in a home with only
FIV cats, and he must be kept indoors to avoid contact with other cats and
to minimize exposure to germs that can compromise his immune system. FIV
cats can live a full lifespan with proper nutrition and vet care, as with
 all cats.

Chester needs a home ASAP because he can no longer be boarded at the vet
inasmuch as they only do medical boarding and Chester will have no place to
go as of Monday, 03/02/09. If that happens, he may have to be put to death
because (1) he has been use to being fed for two months now and to put him
out without food would be very cruel - I cannot continue to feed him
 because
of complaints to my apartment manager and it is against the town's law and
the animal control officer is aware of it, plus (2) Chester should not be
allowed to come in contact with non-FIV cats, of which there are several
pets let out by their owners in this apt complex.

Chester is not feral, but needs socialization; he allowed my vet to pet and
stroke him. The vet picked him up, however, Chester was tense, but not
aggressive - just scared. Chester is probably about 3-4 years old, black
 and
white, green eyes, and adorable. Please help if you can. Time is really
getting short inasmuch as I have to pick him up from my vet on Monday,
03/02/09 and still have no home for him and no place to go.

Chester is located in Red Bank, NJ (Jersey Shore area)

Hi Jenny

That is so great of you to offer. I hope Mike gets back to you. I actually
mixed my positive and negative after a short period apart. The negatives
were vaccinated. There had already been exposure in my case. It was less
stressful for all the cats. I have 11 now. I think I had 9 then but new ones
kept showing up. They get dumped here.
