[Audyssey] Facebook Group for Everything BrailleSoft

2012-05-22 Thread Louis Bryant
Hello all. There's a Facebook group to discuss everything regarding BrailleSoft
and the site BrailleSoft.net. You can talk about current BrailleSoft software,
and the platforms we support as long as it's about specific products on those
platforms. Any suggestions for future products or future platforms, please
don't post them to the group. If you do, your posts will be removed from the
Group. If you do this a second time you will be removed from the group.
Instead, email them to lo...@braillesoft.net. Thanks, and hope to see you there!

[Audyssey] Games for XBOX?

2012-02-23 Thread Louis Bryant
Hi. Is there anyone who'd like to see audio games for Microsoft's XBOX? Reply
to me to cast your vote! Games would be shipped on a CD so it's easy for a
visually impaired person to get playing! Let me know your thoughts and
criticisms. Your response would let me know if I should take time to do
something like this or not. Thanks.

[Audyssey] Games, Games, and more Games!

2011-05-13 Thread Louis Bryant
Hello all fellow game players,
The multi-platform translator is pretty much complete! This means BrailleSoft
can continue creating software for 3 platforms now, and can add more in the
future very easily and all programs we write will run on them upon simply
re-compilation! The platforms we can support now are PAC Mate Omni,
BraillePlus, and Android! We will see software in the next coming months, as
well as updated PAC Mate software that will obviously be new to BraillePlus and
Android. If you run Microsoft Windows, you aren't left out at all, just make
sure you have .NET 3.5 installed! I will soon test with Mono, and if anyone
else can test and let me know results then targetting other platforms won't be
a problem. Well, the next email you see will be about a new released game. If
it is text-based, I may consider writing a Braille Lite version as well. HTH.

Re: [Audyssey] Braille Lite Games?

2011-04-30 Thread Louis Bryant
Hi Shawn, It will send all text output to whatever screen reader you have
running, JAWS, Window-Eyes, NVDA, or SAPI. The text will be presented to you as
if you were playing on a machine that only understood text-based programs. As
for something that translates into C++ you may want to consider using BCX - The
Free BASIC to C Translator. One of the languages my translator will utilize
though is Euphoria for native Windows, Linux, and Mac OS X support. Once the
Euphoria code is generated, you can simply run their Euphoria to C Translator
on any supported platform from Open Euphoria. The Translator also helps me
manage accessibility on a wide variety of systems and devices so really I
basically code only for PAC Mate standards and release for other platforms
after translation and of course testing. Even though the programs are written
to follow my PAC Mate standards, it is easy to add machine-specific features
once the Translation is done and recompile on that particular device, so I'm
not limited at all by this translator. HTH.

Re: [Audyssey] Braille Lite Games?

2011-04-30 Thread Louis Bryant
Hi Shawn, Everything will be included because I believe things should be easy
to get up and running as possible, however nothing on your environment will
have to be changed, as each version of the specific language the Translator is
compatible with will have private locations so you can install updates to a
particular language without affecting the Translator, or the Translator
restricting you to its favorite upgraded version or out-of-date version of an
environment. Once I begin releasing anything this is a good sign that things
are working with the Translator and it could be released as Shareware or
something if given enough demand. HTH.

[Audyssey] Braille Lite Games?

2011-04-29 Thread Louis Bryant
Going old school, well ... sort of. I have been working on a multi-language
translator for quite sometime to help me easily support multiple devices, old
and future without much code modifications. It basically takes any PAC Mate
program I've written in Basic4ppc and translates it into equivalent Python code
that is compatible with the BraillePlus. I am updating the Translator with a
much needed update, and this update now includes Android, Windows, Linux, and
Mac code generations. I won't be releasing new titles until I have a decent
working translator. If I add Braille Lite code generation using its BASIC
interpreter, would anyone play any new titles? Lots of text-based ideas come to
mind. If a particular program can't be translated for one platform, it forgets
that platform and tries the others before giving up. Once the Android version
works properly I hope to release a better update, though I haven't decided if I
want to keep it Open-Source or charge for the time I spent writing this product
and its required code templates. I've been also talking with my wife about
getting an Intel-based Apple with 10.6 or better. Once we have one, iOS devices
will be of course added. And any Android program from BrailleSoft will run on
an iOS device. HTH.

[Audyssey] Going Mono!

2011-03-09 Thread Louis Bryant
Hi everyone, Based off of what I have so far, I'm deciding to go Mono, the
Open-Source .NET for all the platforms. What does this mean for Windows and PAC
Mate users? Nothing, as the software is .NET-based by default! However, Mono
has support for Linux, Mac OS X, a pre-release for Android, iOS support, and
even supports some next-gen consoles like Nintendo WII, Play Station 3, and
using the same program I could even target XBox 360 using XNA. Level Star's
Icon and APH BraillePlus may NOT be supported, however since the announcement
of Orion SmartBook, the Android-based notetaker, and Braille Wizard should
run fine once Mono for Android is out of its pre-release phase. I use Hekkus
sound library, which is a cross-platform engine with fast sound anipulation,
but it doesn't yet support 3D but the developers are working on that. Thanks
for your votes and I'm hoping this will be an easy solution to install on Open
Operating Systems! With the release of my first project I will be sure to post
any directions for supported platforms that users can follow step-by-step to
easily get going!

[Audyssey] Symbian Support Delayed

2010-09-22 Thread Louis Bryant
Hi all. Unfortunately, I am running into several issues when it comes to
developing for the Symbian platforms I thought was worth mentioning here:
1. The SDK docs aren't accessible, or they aren't complete.
2. You must own a device to test on. This is probably cheaper than a Mac.
Until I can resolve these issues don't expect Symbian support anytime soon.
Sorry. I am trying and will continue to try though. HTH.

[Audyssey] Announcing Support for 2 More Devices

2010-09-18 Thread Louis Bryant
Hi there, we will gladly accept testers for these devices upon release of the
RSGames Mobile Client:
Android OS and Symbian Operating Systems from Nokia.
I am writing the client and future programs in the following languages for
easier portability:
C# for Windows Mobile, Python for BraillePlus and Icon, and Java for Android
and Symbian. This will make 3 ports easier than the fourth port since C# and
Java are so similar it's not even funny.
Since this client is freeware just like RSGames version, everyone will get to
test it and based off of your feedback future software will be shaped to
support fixes and changes the client will get. Thanks, and you all take care.
When the client is complete I will announce its release!

Re: [Audyssey] Announcing Support for 2 more Devices

2010-09-18 Thread Louis Bryant
Hi. Portable Apple products won't be supported anytime soon. Right now they are
out of my budget. In order to build for such a device you must own one, and
languages such as Python and Java either are quite difficult to get up and
running to develop for those devices, or they are unsupported. Though people
may be willing to test on an IPhone or Ipod, how do I know I can trust you with
Source Code and not to give it away unless the product is Open Source? Then
there is the knowledge about the IPhone or IPod the tester would have to know,
like how to compile Objective-C for there device? Then would the tester want
some kind of pay for their time, especially if the project is being sold? HTH.

Hi. Unfortunately right now I don't have the money to purchase an IPhone or a
Nokia, though I hear there are some good deals on those phones on EBay but I
doubt they'll work without a plan from a carrier to use. Also, the Braille
Wizard version won't be available until January of 2011, and may have bugs
until we get Braille Wizard and other Android testers. As for Mac, I don't have
the money for one of those either. I really wish I could target all those
devices though. We deserve it. Until I find work, I am in school now and
raising 2 kids, and I am tired of depending on Rehab for everything so I won't
be asking for one of those unsupported devices anytime soon. Life for now is
quite limiting, but I won't stop until I get to where I want to be! Sorry for
complaining, just wish us minorities didn't have to struggle so much just to

[Audyssey] Announcing RSGames Client Mobile!

2010-09-15 Thread Louis Bryant
Hi all PDA lovers out there. BrailleSoft and RSGames have teamed up to bring
you the RSGames Client Mobile version! The client is NOT yet available.
With this version, users can play RSGames titles like Monopoly and Uno for
free, chat, and have quite a wonderful time right from the following devices:
APH BraillePlus, Level Star's Icon, Windows Mobile Smartphone, other Windows
Mobile devices, Freedom Scientific's PAC Mate 4.1 and earlier, PAC Mate Omni,
and really soon, National Braille Press BrailleWizard! I understand on the site
it says that software wouldn't necessarily be PM specific to better target
other devices, however I haven't put anything in place just yet. However when
it does happen, rest assured you PM users won't be left out.
Once this client is complete it will be found on BrailleSoft.net/rsclient.htm.
Already the client from RSGames runs on Windows, Mac, and Linux. However it
uses components not found on Windows Mobile and BraillePlus and Icon. This
partnership now means that users on Mobile devices can play against other
mobile users and even other desktop users without problems. Enjoy and I hope to
see more of you on RSGames servers!

Hi Thomas, unfortunately not, however with Python and to produce sound they use
GStreamer. From the looks of this library it provides fantastic capabilities
for adjusting sounds in code during playback, such as panning, speed, multiple
sounds at once on demand, ETC., sort of like SDL. It supports multiple formats,
wav, mp3, ogg, and probably more I am forgetting. I'm still learning the thing
as it seems like a lot of work to even play a simple sound but have control
over it. I think my first few projects will use simple sound effects until I
get the hang of GStreamer. HTH.

Hi Josh, I also have a BraillePlus here, and absolutely love it! I don't
understand anymore the peop[le who just adore their Crap Mate Omlettes. Come on
now, on the BraillePlus we have access to an 80 GB builtin HD, builtin Wi-Fi,
Bluetooth and a whole range of Braille Displays. If you are a PAC Mate user
like I was, then you can happily link your PM display with the unit and off you
go! We also get access to Serotek Network and can download movies, books from
NLS, ETC. The machine actually retrieves its own updates online, and the
interface is similar to a BrailleNote interface, but you can run lots of Linux
software, and even create your own. I've got projects in the works for this
machine, Uno 3.0 first. I may continue supporting Pocket PC in general, but
none of the games will be PM specific. That is to say, if they run, great.
Otherwise we can't help you.

Hi Thomas, after this I will drop the FS subject and the BP topic; Actually the
BraillePlus uses a similar system to GTK for it's main interface, but for
standard software only the console is available unless you modify the source to

program looks I can send you the Python source to one of mine, but I don't use
Console-based code when building for the BrailePlus, I use their standard API.

[Audyssey] BrailleSoft No Longer Supports Freedom Scientific

2010-08-06 Thread Louis Bryant
Hi all. As many of you know FS has gone lawsuit crazy this past year. There was
an unsettling case in which FS filed suit against the Foundation for blind
children in Arizona, as sighted by BLindBargains.com. To see it, either Google
Freedom Scientific Lawsuits or go to BlindBargains.com, look under the latest
Bargains heading, and look for Lawsuit Round up. HTH.

[Audyssey] Apple IIGS with Accessories for Sale

2010-07-17 Thread Louis Bryant
Hi all Apple II fans! We are moving, and I am finding that I am less interested
in my Apple IIGS and disks. I would like to sell it, accessories included for
about $300. Included is a color monitor, Echo II Speech, the main GS itself,
over 200 disks most with Textalker for DOS installed and some with Textalker
for ProDOS, lots of games including Battleship, Hangman, Oregon Trail,
Kidnapped, APH training diskettes, Lettertalk Plus, Music disks, special
utilities, Lessons in using the echo II, a special disk from SoftTape that with
the right equipment allows you to do voice recordings, some wacko programs I
wrote when I was ten years old for fun, EchoWords, Words and Words Pro, a
spellchecking disk, Talking Typer, Programming Basic manuals disks, two floppy
five in a quarter drives, one 3 and a half floppy disk drive, keyboard, BBS
disks to access networks from dial-up modems, and all the wires you need for it
to run. If you are interested, please get back to me via lo...@braillesoft.net
and we can make payment and delivery arrangements. Thanks.

Hi. Just excited to say that BrailleSoft, this time for sure will have working

[Audyssey] What Are Considered SPace Invader Clones?

Hi there, I had more shooting games in mind but am afraid they'd be classified

to be a Space Invader clone and what suggestions do you have to separate new

Hi all. Thank you for your feedback. I wrote a game back in 2003 that was never
finished that is exactly a Space Invader clone, and now that I look back at it,
it may have been quite a failure to release it now. I am thinking of more ideas
that haven't been attempted and will let you all know when something is

[Audyssey] Maze Beta 1 from BrailleSoft

2010-05-27 Thread Louis Bryant
Hi everyone. Travis and myself would love feedback regarding Travis's Maze
Beta 1 available from BrailleSoft.net under the Windows Programs link.

Click the link and look for the Maze Game. You can email your suggestions to
tra...@braillesoft.net since this is his game. We're still coming up with a
decent title for this one. What improvements could we make? What do you like
about the game? What don't you like about the game?

We also are thinking about major improvements for future versions, however
it is the players of the game we really want to hear from. Please evaluate
this game and tell us what you want!

Re: [Audyssey] Where Have All The Developers Gone?

2010-05-23 Thread Louis Bryant
Hi. I'm still around, however I've been quite busy finding full-time work,
raising two children under the age of two, college for my Bachelors in Software
Development and Game Design, and helping both Ken Downey and Travis with PAC
Mate development. I've turned away from the PAC Mate a bit to start focusing on
desktop games since that's where most of the user base is anyway. Travis and
Ken's games will most likely be PAC Mate games exclusively, while mine has
shifted. Desktops are now my top priority while the PDA market comes last. I am
working on a couple of titles but I really can't say how long they'll take to
come out as the ideas are quite major and require out-of-pocket spending to get
them off of the ground. This is one of the reasons why I'm looking for work, to
get my family in a better financial place and to deliver to the blind gaming
community what we've all wanted. I'm hanging in there, and hope you will all do
the same for all other developers.

[Audyssey] Trust or Distrust?

2010-04-02 Thread Louis Bryant
Please give me your opinion once again.
I am working on 2 products, however they won't be available anytime this year
because I want to make sure they are fun, stable, ETC. and I want to sell them
for an affordable price of course. My question is, should customers, which will
be you, be trusted? It seems like a lot of work to add codes to unblock your
software, when we all know one way or another, your program will be pirated. As
far as I know, Apple, Level Star, Serotek, and maybe others, trust users to
install their apps on the systems they say they will, thereby eliminating the
hassel of codes that may or may NOT work during install. Microsoft, FS, ETC. as
we all know don't trust their customers, making it difficult to reinstall a
product, even when the malfunction wasn't our fault. My IRC client was based on
that same principle, the future version will NOT be. I want customers to have
the easiest experience. And I can accept the fact that life just isn't fair,
and whether or NOT I place a restriction on how my software is installed, there
are smarter people and they'll figure it out one way or another. But in my
opinion codes have NOT lessend piracy, so why include them? What's your take on
this? Thanks.

[Audyssey] New Ways to Program Software

2010-04-01 Thread Louis Bryant
Hi. I just needed your opinion on something. C++ is the best language to
develop games in as far as I'm concerned now that I understand fluently how to
develop in it, at least audio games. Does it make sense to use C++ for only
fast audio games and stick with .NET or some other high-level language for most
other types of programs on the desktop and other devices? Based on what you all
think is exactly what I'm starting after a few more months of updated games and
what not from BrailleSoft. I've been tusseling with this question for a while
now.

[Audyssey] Apple II Archive Updated

2009-12-29 Thread Louis Bryant
Hi there, 25 more programs have been added, and I just might toy around with
some Integer Basic programs and see how well they transfer, and if successful
the number of available apps will increase. Most useful places to help when
looking at the Apple II source codes are to visit the first link on the page
http://www.braillesoft.net/AppleIIStuff.htm. It'll take you to a site that
keeps you up-to-date about the latest happenings in the Apple II Comunity, as
well as Basic programming tutorials. The second link is the actual archive.
Using Google, you can look up something like Applesoft Basic Reference and you
should be able to decipher the code a lot better. Enjoy and send any questions
about the code this way and I'll help in whatever way I can.

[Audyssey] Louis Bryant's Apple II Archive Now Available

2009-12-22 Thread Louis Bryant
Hi all gamers, I am pleased to bring to you all my BASIC programs I've had for
some years on my Apple II Computer. I've also brought to you demos of programs
that ran showing off the Echo II Speech synthesizer and the voices it allows.
There's also a collection of music using various sound effects and so forth.
I'm not done with the collection yet, but here is the first half. Hopefully,
programmers can port these games to Windows. I plan on doing just that
sometime, but life is quite busy for me now with a wife and 2 kids. You can
find this collection on the BrailleSoft.net web site. There are also BASIC
programming tutorials to help you understand what some BASIC features did,
since none of our languages use a lot of them anymore. Hope you all enjoy and
any questions you may have, please ask.

down today until further notice. We're changing servers! The domain
BrailleSoft.DYNdns.org will be our backup site starting tomorrow, and once
BrailleSoft.net becomes available we will let you all know.

Katie, Simon, and Ken please email me offlist so we can get you setup with
new accounts on the backup site. I will also be changing HTML links to point
to the correct URL'S so users don't get a 404 not found error.

For those of you using PAC Mate IRC this program will NOT work until the new
BrailleSoft.net is available again. We are sorry for any inconvenience this
may cause, and we will work as fast as we can to restore the site again. A
future version of the IRC client will NOT use this same technique for
program authorization due to this type of inconvenience.

Thank you very much, and we hope you will enjoy what's ahead in the future
from BrailleSoft as we unveil new types of software!

Hi,
No. The .NET Framework is designed to run side by side with other
versions. In fact, I was pretty sure the .NET Framework package I have
on my web site contains .NET 2.0 SP 1, .NET 3.0, and .NET 3.5 all in one
installation. It is suppose to launch the proper framework when you run

Hi. The arrows should also make a clicking sound from your computer
speakers. If you go too far, you should hear a blooping sound that tells you
so. Press the SPACEBAR to pick the tooth. Make sure you do have the .NET 2.0
and all service packs installed and updated. It is working over here, so I
can't help any further than that.

hi.
the solution to getting the game working propperly is to either unload or
put your screen reader to sleep.
as I found til i put jaws to sleep I couldn't navigate with the arrows or
pull teeth.
so what you do is this you load the game, then if you use jaws load your
configuration manager.
then go to advanced options and select the checkbox that says enable sleep
mode. then tab around to ok and select it.
save the configuration file when it asks.
then exit crocodile dentist and reload it. then you should find it works
fine.
also another thing to note, the game is a bit odd in that it doesn't use
standard buttons and dialogs when the game asks a question like do you
want
instructions or do you want to play again you actually have to type the
word
yes or no and press enter. its no good just pressing y or n and expecting
it

to do something.

Hi,

I just tried the new game from Braillesoft, the crocodile dentist.
But the game doesn't work for me. The arrows do absolutely nothing in
the
game, so I can't select a tooth to pull. Any help?
I'm playing the game on my windows laptop.

Thanks and best regards

Army. Get your copy from http://www.BrailleSoft.net for all platforms, PAC Mate

later, as well as Windows using .NET 2.0 or later. Remember you can access
Speech Settings from the desktop by pressing ESCAPE at anytime, and selecting
what voice characteristics you want to change. This feature will be included in

[Audyssey] Madlib Story Writer for Windows

2009-06-26 Thread Louis Bryant
Hi all, we have made, and are making several changes to our PAC Mate and
Smartphone games to support Windows. One such program is the Madlib Story
Writer. It is now available for Windows as a self-voicing program. Unlike The
Great Escape, which is getting a major overhall, you can adjust what voice
reads the program to you, and how slow or fast with a simple command at anytime
throughout the games. Just press ESCAPE and you are brought to the settings
menu in this, and all future titles. Please let us know what you think. You can
download Madlibs and more great games from BrailleSoft.net. HTH.

Re: [Audyssey] Draconis Entertainment News

2009-06-09 Thread Louis Bryant
Hi. Why not Linux? If it's audio games all of you are struggling with, check
out this awesome library I use and love, for now at least, wish it had MP3
support. It is called Hekkus Sound System for Developers of various
languages, it let's you use .wav and .ogg which actually seems to be 3 times
better than MP3, and you can learn more about it at shlzero.com. It works
with apps written for Symbian, Windows, Linux with OpenAl as the sound
engine, Pocket PC/Smartphones running Windows Mobile, Mac OS, and many
others! It basically lets you mix sounds and speed them up, slow them down,
adjust volume, pan them, ETC. all at the same time, or whenever your
programs must do so. I used it to build Showdown on Pocket PC. The library
works with any language that let's you interact with DLLS including .NET and
possibly Mono. HTH.

Greetings gamers,

Our new automated ordering system will be going live in the next
couple of days, and with this new system come some changes, some of
which are very important, so please read this entire message.

1. Future titles will require online activation. You will be able to
activate and deactivate your games, but you will be limited to only a
certain number of concurrent installations. This will effect only
future titles.

2. Between now and midnight PDT on 16/June/2009, we will fill any
requests for replacement registration keys at the usual cost of the
replacement. (This is typically 25% of the original cost of the game,
with a minimum of $5, per key.) Requests should be sent to
sa...@draconisentertainment.com
After that time, Draconis will no longer be offering replacement
registration keys under any circumstances. If you need a replacement,
you need to get it now.

We regret the need to make these changes, but piracy and the sharing
of keys has, sadly, become an epidemic.

We look forward to providing you with some new games soon for Mac,
Windows, and maybe another platform as well...and I don't mean Linux.
*wink*

I have completed version 3 of the games pack and haven't even had a
chance to send out version 2--I found a goldmine of new games. I'm proud
to say to you all that at last I have stumbled upon a free accessible
checkers game for the PM, which will also work on any other PPC with jaws
on it. I found many others, but that's the best one. I know that some of
you have offered, so just send me an ftp address or, if possible, I can
attach the pack to my e-mail message. It's about fifteen megs though so
that probably won't work. I've beaten my head against a wall over this
web hosting thing--Time Warner claims not to block ports, and yet no one
can see my site even though I know that they are being directed to the
right IP address. Maybe I should set up on port 8080?

Anyway, it's been frustrating and I want to share the wealth with this
community, so just let me know where I can put the games pack and I'll
send it on--and worry about my own website later I guess.

Hey there to all,
We are now pleased to announce the arrival, late though it might be, of
our behind-the-scenes blog!
This will be a replacement of the old Development Diary, as it will be a
lot easier to post to.
It will list any activity that is being carried out at X-Sight Interactive
that may be of little to no importance, depending on the views of the
reader, but it will at least give an idea of the progress of any new
product or service that we are working on at the time.
As we have near enough 100 projects on the go, we feel that it would only
be fair to give updates more regularly than a company who may devote their
time to one project before starting another.
I hope you find it useful. You can access it either through our homepage,
or directly at http://blog.x-sight-interactive.net.

Damien C. Sadler.

can see why no one would choose Eloquence. HTH.

Actually, eloquence sounds quite human to me. that can't be good huh? lol.
The voice wouldn't work for a game such as what Thomas is developing, but
for a screen reader there's no better voice than eloquence. the response
time is instantaneous, and this is definitely not the case with the more
natural sounding voices.

Hi Bryan,
Smile. I know. I was just curious as to why someone would want Eloquence
in a game. It would seam to me to be the last choice anyone would pick
for a game like MOTA which happens to be very character driven. While I
am not all that fond of using synths for scenes, menus, etc the more
realistic sounding the voice the better.

Bryan Peterson wrote:

OhI realize that. All I was saying was that the only reason I even
bother with Eloquence for my screen reader is because of its response
time. I've already experienced the way it sounds in some of Jim's
games.

It sort of fits there but it would be horribly out of place in a game
like MOTA.

[Audyssey] Mono on MAC and Linux?

Hi all, for those of you who use Linux and the Mac, how good is Mono in terms
of accessibility? I'm interested in it, because I have switched to C# and
Visual Basic.NET and since Mono supports those languages it may be easy to
start cross-platform support this year. HTH.

Hi all, BrailleSoft is moving! Due to unfortunate circumstances, we can no
longer afford the web plan we have had for the last 2 years. Because of this,
we are moving! We will try to minimize the downtime that our domain
BrailleSoft.net is out-of-service, but until then we do have a temporary site
you can go to. Visit us at BrailleSoft.dyndns.org to continue enjoying the
service you always have! This server is still under maintenance but we will do
our best not to disconnect it all the time. Thanks for your understanding and
we are sorry for any inconveniences.

[Audyssey] Madlib Story Writer

2008-11-27 Thread Louis Bryant
Hi all, Another small program, the Madlib Story Writer from BrailleSoft is now
available.
Welcome to the Madlib Story Writer for the PAC Mate 4.1 and earlier, PAC Mate
Omni, Pocket PC without JAWS and Windows Mobile Smartphone
Write humorous stories by answering the questions the program prompts for, then
once you hear 4 stories and decide which ones were funny, save them to a text
file to read them later using the builtin word-processor on your device.
Smartphones don't support the save option.

It's available from BrailleSoft.net. Make sure if you are a Smartphone user, or
a Pre-Omni PAC Mate user you have the appropriate version of the .NET CF
installed.

What sounded like Gold Boys
Could it have been gold coins?

off some of her new weapons, attacks, and what is in store for later
levels of the game
Developers note. .Do to financial reasons we have not been able to
purchase original music and have not yet completed adding original

some development has moved forward, but it is a massive project that
will
not see the light of day for some time. That is all we will say
publicly

about that project at present.

I think whichever dev comes up with a true audio Rpg will really get

[Audyssey] BrailleSoft Releases Bomb!

2008-11-02 Thread Louis Bryant
Hi all, BrailleSoft has released a new game called Bomb!

This is a mine-sweeper-like type game. How many squares can you uncover without
uncovering a square with a bomb? Originally written by Dan Zingaro for the
Freedom Scientific classic notetakers, it is now available for your Windows
Mobile powered PDA. Instructions are included with the game, and for PAC Mate
users and PM Omni users JAWS scripts are automatically installed during program
setup.
This program runs on the following devices:
PAC Mate 4.1 and earlier
PAC Mate Omni 6.0 and later
Other Pocket PC
and All Smartphones

You can download the game from BrailleSoft.net. Look under Either BrailleSoft's
PAC Mate Software for all PAC Mate specific games, and under BrailleSoft's
Windows Mobile Smartphone Software for all of our Smartphone games. If you own
a Pocket PC and it is not a PAC Mate, PAC Mate Omni or Smartphone, then either
link for you will do, however if it's Bomb you want you want to choose Other
PPC after choosing one of the above links. . HTH.

[Audyssey] OT: What Do You Think of Python?

2008-08-31 Thread louis
Hi game developers. Lately, I have been taking a look at Python because it runs
on a variety of platforms, especially the PAC Mate and BraillePlus. This will
allow me to write a program once and modify it for these corresponding Python
interpreters on both platforms. My question is: is it a good language for game
development, and, would you recommend selling games, if need be, using such a
language? Is it easily hackable? Are there any other high-level languages you
would recommend for such a task that works on PPC and an ARM version of Linux?
Thanks.

 Hi Mike,
Right. I can certainly write a custom setup/installer to allow you to
customize the setup, and prompt you with some questions. As I said
earlyer I feel considering the number of different Linux operating
systems out there, many of them using different software packagement
tools, it might be further ahead to come up with something generic
anyway to install the software. Heck, I could write a simple shell
script to do that if I wanted.

 Mike Reiser wrote:
I dunno, I just like that at least with win I can press enter and it
goes after a few questions. With a .deb file in linux this can be done
also and after the password is entered it will just extract it. That's
 what I like.

 Hi Jim,
You know, I never really thought of it like that. With things like Chopper
Challenge, Acefire, etc, because me and the rest of my windows side of the
team wrote the games, I like to have my name credited on it, because the
original idea was mine. However after looking at your argument against
 that
I can also see where you're coming from.
It's interesting how other people react to credits, copyrights etc.

 Hi Louis,

The thing is, my name should not be on a game that is not mine. That is
if I did not produce it or you did not port the game directly from my
code, the game is not mine and should not carry my name. Can you not
 understand that?

That would be a total rip off of my name and game title. Not to mention
if the game did not play the same, be buggy or whatever, that would
reflect on me which would not be fair to me. Especially since I have
nothing to do with it, control over it or even any way to check it out.
And I do not need to deal with phone calls and Email about a game that I
did not write, never played, but carries my name.

I mean if you plan to use my sound files and write a similar game, I
really believe that you should call the game something else and leave my
 name off of it.

 Sincerely
 Jim Kitchen

 Hi Trouble,
Well, what I meant to say is that I am confused as to wwhy people
continue to buy Microsoft products. Yeah, I know full well in the mid
90's up until the last few years there wasn't much of a choice. However,
that has changed now, but most people are not willing to switch even
though they know Microsoft's stuff is not very stable, and takes various
service packs and updates before it really becomes reliable.
I guess it really comes down to the common psychilogical problem we all
have is we hate change. We hate to learn something new, and you can't
teach an old dog new tricks kind of thing going on. We are creatures of
habit, and it takes something really major to change those hhabits.

 Trouble wrote:
For a while the people had no choice in Microsoft products at least

Hi. Yes, and Python looks as though it isn't very flexible, due to the fact
that in the manuals I saw nothing about using Linux Shared Libraries with

 Hi,
I am not surprised. I sort of figured the Braille Plus was a very
chopped down Linux OS. It honestly would be better to get a laptop with
Linux installed instead. That way you have at least a decent list of
 packages and dependancies.

 missing is just rediculous.

Re: [Audyssey] Games for your mobile device are finally here

2008-08-01 Thread louis
Hi. I actually ported Chopper Challenge to VB.net with no problems, of
course you have to do something like this from scratch, and it is available
for the PPC and a beta is available for the Windows Mobile Smartphone. I was
trying to contact Bavisoft to find out how to do at least Grizly Gulch
without facing legal issues but they won't respond so whatever. . I have
also done Showdown, which PB Games wrote in Javascript I believe, and I am
currently getting started on Puppy1. It's not a matter of being future
proof, it's a matter of what you are willing to do to make sure non-future
proofing something doesn't happen. HTH.

 yeah I know.
but it is my opinion that blind gaming in general for the present time
will probably lag behind due to its nature.
Its not likely that we can use the latest and greatest, the cash envolved
 for starters.
 Ok, Ok.
I realise that the express languages are free and the sdks are also free
so there should be no excuse but xna is not really that accessible, etc.
More over games by bavisoft, gma, and jim kitchen will not work because
these at least to my knowledge use vb6 code.
Also is chopper challenge and a couple others.
In other words a load of old stuff is not futureproofed.
not sure about bavisoft using vb6 but.
I think you can always install the files etc but still you are right.
And for those of us that still use vb6 and dx8 we must understand our days
 are numbered.
To those that are moving to c++ good on us all and the multiplatform
approach you have discussed earlier has meret.
 also does the java language.

Hi,
I don't think so. DirectPlay is a very very old technology. I don't know
how many folks on this list keep up to date with what is going on in the
Windows technology world, but DirectPlay was officially dropped by
Microsoft in November 2007. That was almost a year ago when DirectPlay
was officially removed as a core Windows technology. We as developers
need to begin thinking about something else if we want to be ready for
Windows 7 support.
We as blind gamers need to recognise the fact a lot of the technologies
we are using for games such as Visual Basic 6 and DirectPlay are only
going to be supported up to Windows Vista. Windows 7 on will not have
any support for these technologies. It might be possible to force an
installation of VB 6 libraries, DirectPlay, etc but it is going to get
harder and harder to support as time goes by.

Yeah, I would also go with DirectPlay. But the problem is that it is

Re: [Audyssey] wonder if any games can be played on braille plussomewhat easily?

2008-07-31 Thread louis
Hi. The BraillePlus is based on Debian Linux. Wine is a Windows Emulation
for Linux and as far as I know doesn't yet work on those products. Also,
there is no good 3d sound libs yet us programmers can take advantage of, but
whenever that will be, then audio games can indeed be played on an Icon or
Brailleplus. I am looking into this myself. HTH.

 Hi.
I wonder if, say, sound rts, could be put on the braille plus. The braille
plus runs on linux wine I think they call it and there is a console mode.
That'd be one sweet game to be able to play on it. I guess there might
have to be some keystroke changes, who knows.

I wonder if louis has any luck finding a language with which to write
some. A mud client would be totally fun.

 Hi Damien!
 Why do you use TCP?
 That is the slowlyst protocol!
I would recommend using UDP or directplay.

Re: [Audyssey] Games for your mobile device are finally here

2008-07-30 Thread louis
Hi. The Network API comes directly from .NET CF 1.0. The issue I am having
basically is line-terminators. I need to play around with Acefire a bit and
see what exactly are the commands sent and received by both client and
server, and how they are terminated. I know Damien uses a special VB API to
do this, but it seems that his API hides the technical details, like command
termination and such. HTH.

[Audyssey] Liam Ervin's Archery

2008-07-29 Thread louis
Hi Liam, Great job! A couple of clarifications though I want to point out to
you for the site, your game runs on all versions of Windows Mobile not just
starting with 5. I got a PM here with WM 2003 SE and it ran fine. Also you need
to set a cab mime-type to an asterisk (*) so Internet will download the file,
not try and open it.
Wow! We just now had a small earthquake here! Take care, and keep the games

 Shaun,

I don't know if we qualify as major but 7-128 Software is still in the
 biz.

Right now we've got 8 new blind-accessible games for children coded.

We plan to release them as soon as I get the dratted custom content
 editors finished for Perkins School.

Then I've been told that I gotta finish a couple more accessible word
 games.

Then... well, you get the idea.

 Hi Liam,
Major coolness! I am vary appreciative of fellow developers like you
 who
are willing to take up the task of supporting other devices besides
 Windows PCs only.

 Hi Michael,
Oh, I see. I wasn't aware this was the final draft. In any case it is
great starter for the Windows XP user. great work.
As far as continuing the kind of work you have started I have been
thinking of doing something similar for Linux. I've been wanting to
write up a authoritative guide for new Linux users that explains such
things is how to use the Orca screen reader, the Gnome desktop, browsing
the internet, using email, how to play dvd movies, get podcasts, record
and edit sounds, etc all in Linux.

[Audyssey] Simon Beta for Smartphones

2008-05-15 Thread louis
Hi all, Simon for the Windows Mobile Smartphone is in beta. If you want to
test, anyone can go to http://www.BrailleSoft.net/beta/ss.cab. To hear the
notes or to play them, use letters a, s, d, f, g, h, j, and k. When in practice
mode, the space bar stops the current note from playing. Currently there isn't
a close feature so closing it from the memory dialog should work. In the
official release, a close feature will be added. Let me know what you think.
Thanks.

Re: [Audyssey] the organ trail

2008-04-24 Thread louis
Hi. This and other games I start writing will now be available on Windows
and Windows Mobile Devices. I'd like to support Symbian and Linux but need
lots of testers because I do NOT have the means to get a BraillePlus or a
Symbian-based Smartphone at the moment. HTH.

 Hi
It would be very cool for windows. Perhaps I could finally get to Oregon
without drowning or killing my children.

 and what is that?
I actually have not played this stuff, although I was born in 1982
 I only
was aware of some stuff in 93.
The first games were captain comic, agent, dave, intergalactic
 battle,
 cats, catacomb and lhx.
I only found out about the rest later in 1995 when I got the net.
