I can see your point here, but unlike the one that you took the games over from. You have come out with updates and reasons why you got set back. your right a game can not be done in a day and neither was the earth. pre orders are up to you, but personally i see the head ache makes them not worth it. Just so the others know. Big game companies break out the info on the update. Just to wet your apatite and then take as long as they want on the release with no info until release. So you could be waiting six munths to over a year for more info on the game you pre paid for, and they do not answer email or letters about said games. [Audyssey] Questions for all you game developers on the list
Hi All. I am in the midst of writing an accessible video game and have a few questions to ask. First up, I'd like to know which open source engine is most frequently being used by all you experienced developers, or hav you had to build a graphics and audio engine for your game from scratch? Second, I am still juggling in my mind as to whether I'll code my game in cSharp or c++. In comparison, are there any significant drawbacks or significant advantages in terms of performance and reliability if i were to choose one above the other? I am quite profficient in both, although I've taken a microsoft certified course in cSharp, whereas for c++, it has been mostly self taught. Also, if anyone of you could point me to a good tutorial on keyboard input, especially for triggering audio events, I'd really appreciate it. my last question is, if i had to resort to Microsoft's DirectX SDK for developing my game, is there a way to make the keyboard controls accessible? Any input is extremely welcomed. Cheers! and thanks --- Gamers mailing list __ Gamers@audyssey.org If you want to leave the list, send E-mail to gamers-unsubscr...@audyssey.org. [Audyssey] an online participation word game
>From my inbox: On Thursday, at 3 pm Eastern, that's 1900 Universal, I am hosting a new game on FTP which I call Word Burst. Here is a short description of the game. Word Burst Do you love to play Outburst? Do you love words? Let's put the two together and play Word Burst! Word Burst is the same as Outburst, except that you don't call out items in categories, such as Elvis hits or makes of cars. Instead, the members of each team call out anagrams of the word I will give you. So come into Games People Play and find the words within a word. Kathy Mertz If you don't have an account with FTP, go to www.for-the-people.com and sign up at no charge. It is a voice chat site with several rooms available. So hook a mike to your PC and join in on the fun. --- Shepherds are the best beasts. --- Gamers mailing list __ Gamers@audyssey.org If you want to leave the list, send E-mail to gamers-unsubscr...@audyssey.org. Re: [Audyssey] Questions for all you game developers on the list
So far as I know most audio game devs don't even bother with graphics since they're totally blind or visually impaired enough that graphics wouldn't do them any good. It was on the album Dorkfish as I recall, and I'm pretty sure it was on that CD. I'll have to take another listen. But it does hold very true in this situation. Re: [Audyssey] Questions for all you game developers on the list
Personally I write all my things in C++. I have built my own game engine, or rather it's a large set of functions that I combine differently in each game so to speak. It can only be called an engine in the case of Bgt which obviously is not relevant here. If you want my very personal recommendation I'd say C++, since you have more flexibility later if you should want to port your games to another platform as you do not have to depend on the .net framework. If you need guidance on where to find specific things like keyboard input as you mentioned, feel free to contact me off list and I'll be more than happy to assist you in any way I can. Thanks. Re: [Audyssey] Questions for all you game developers on the list
Hi. Well, I intend to go steps further and write a commercially viable game that can be played by both the sighted and the blind. I've invested lots in learning software development, and it seems to me a huge waste of all that money if I don't put what i learn to practical use, hence my intention to write a video game which is also accessible. Re: [Audyssey] Questions for all you game developers on the list
I applaud your efforts. This will help to close the gap between disabled and non disabled people. Financially speaking it also makes more sense to developer a good accessible game that everybody can play, because when selling it more people can enjoy it and so you will sell more copies. jaf...@ecstatico.net wrote: Hi. Well that could be a tall order given a lot of people's attitudes about the difficulty of games. A game that's challenging enough to keep a sighted person's interest is apparently too hard for a lot of blind folks. Homer: Hey, uh, could you go across the street and get me a slice of pizza? Re: [Audyssey] Questions for all you game developers on the list
Hi Will. It's an adventure game very loosely based on treasure island by robert louis stevenson. I could have chosen to make just an audio version of it, but I am trying to get a share of the games market and put all that programming skills I've studied and paid for to good use. I think that we must try to get out of our comfort zone sometimes and try something new. After all, we are living in a world full of sighted folk, and we must do our best to get along side them and not confine ourselves to our own world. h well Right now it is, but tom has been one of the only devs that has actually attempted to get there. There have been other projects ofcause audioquake, teraformas, and last crusade to name a few but none as complex as this. I am looking foreward to the new vid game jafa is doing, tried to do viceover things but I just can't do stuff on the spot, without lines, I'll gladly do testing on this. I agree. Re: [Audyssey] Why can't we get a challenging game for once? wasMOTA
A worthy ambition, but given the increased difficulty I have a feeling that if Thomas did that he'd live to regret it. Here's a concept. If ya don't like a given feature of a game, ya don't have to use it. Not trying to be offensive here but that's how I feel. Quite frankly I'm greatful to have the option to save at any point or I probably would have lost patience with the new Beta. And as I grow more comfortable I use it less anyways, usually only right before the boss if I decide I'm going to try to bring him down. Hi Bryan, Exactly my thoughts. If there is someone who doesn't want to save games while playing there is no law saying they have to. Yes, people can use it to cheat, but cheaters are only cheating themselves in the end. Bryan Peterson wrote: A worthy ambition, but given the increased difficulty I have a feeling that if Thomas did that he'd live to regret it. Here's a concept. Quite frankly I'm greatful to have the option to save at any point or I probably would have lost patience with the new Beta. And as I grow more comfortable I use it less anyways, usually only right before the boss if I decide I'm going to try to bring him down. Hi Yohandy, Perhaps, but considering the fact I use the save game feature for debugging I really don't want to restrict it to the beginning of a level. Re: [Audyssey] Saving game penalty
Hi Phil, that would cause more problems than it is worth. for one thing I use the save game feature a lot for testing the game. I often restore a saved checkpoint so I can test something I've fixed, updated, whatever. if I added penalties on myself I couldn't test it as well as I should. Besides that how am I to make the penalty system fair. If someone is playing a game, gets to level 5, and has to go to work is he suppose to just quit? Is he suppose to be penalized, treated as a cheater, rather than someone who didn't have the time to finish a game? Is it fair to penalize both the cheaters and non-cheaters alike? If I have a save feature and penalize people for using it why have it at all? Personally, I see it as a feature of the game for the end user's enjoyment. They can use it or not. If they cheat that's their problem. Phil Vlasak wrote: Hi folks, How about having a penalty to saving the MOTA game. Each time you save the game 1 percent is taken away from your health. So even with a healing potion, you would only go back to 99 percent if you saved the game once. For example if you saved the game 20 times your maximum health would be 80 and could go no higher. So if you save the game 50 times you would only have half of your health and could be killed much easier. This would take away the addiction of saving the game at each door. Of course maybe if you got that magic orb you would be restored to full health. Hi Trouble, that's true of course, but some people in our comunity have wicked tempers. Even worse I've spoken to my fair share of people that hav a "you owe me" attitude, and it drives me crazy. That said, I've thought about setting up something like an msdn subscription style service. If you can afford it Microsoft has a subscription for msdn that allows you to download betas for MS Office, Windows, etc and you can upgrade to the full product for a discount when it comes out. It is expensive, but it is a way of getting legal copies of their software as they become available, and for a discount when they come out. If I set up a similar service on my web site people would donate x amount each year for games, and as a result they would get all alpha, beta, and full releases of my games for a reduced price or for nothing at all. Hi Bryan, quite right. Most accessible game developer's don't worry about graphics for two reasons. Re: [Audyssey] Questions for all you game developers on the list
Hi Jaffar, I think you would be better off writing your own custom game engine. That way you will get the features and functionality you want without depending on someone elses engine. Especially, given the fact that most commercial game engines out there are not equipt for accessibility anyway. As far as which language to use I'd personally say go with C++. The C++ programming language is the industry standard and there is a wide range of multimedia development libraries for C++ such as OpenGL, OpenAL, LibSDL, DirectX, XNA, fmodex, and so on. You have native access to these APIs which is not only slightly easier, but your applications will run better as well. When you use a language like C-Sharp you have to locate a managed library like SdlDotNet, MS XNA Framework, SlimDX, etc which may or may not be up to date. I've discovered through trial and error C-Sharp isn't always the best solution to use for gaming. I like c-Sharp, it works well enough, but C++ is a bit better in the long run. As you may or may not know I've been researching cross platform accessible gaming. So far I've had the least grief and trouble sticking with C++. There are APIs like OpenGL, OpenAL, LibSDL, that makes it much easier to create cross platform games provided you recompile a build for each target platform. With C-Sharp I have to create a version that runs on Mono which isn't necessarily recommended given licensing issues with the technology. Plus the Mono Framework that runs on Mac and Linux isn't totally compatible with .NET applications. Sometimes you still need to recompile and modify the game to make them run on Mac and linux correctly. Re: [Audyssey] Questions for all you game developers on the list
Hi Bryan, true. Although, I think the bigger problem with this type of game is that video games tend to operate at much higher speeds than audio games. The graphics might be redrawn 20 to 30 times a second, and it is constantly being updated in real time. Certainly faster than audio and speech feedback will allow for. As a result my audio games are slowed down to account for the player's ability to listen to things and get some sort of spoken feedback. At the speed my main game loop runs the screen and audio would seam to crawl in slow motion for a normal mainstream gamer. I'm not saying this can't be over come, but it might be much faster and require quickr reflexes than your average accessible gamer is use to. Bryan Peterson wrote: Well that could be a tall order given a lot of people's attitudes about the difficulty of games. A game that's challenging enough to keep a sighted person's interest is apparently too hard for a lot of blind folks. Re: [Audyssey] Preordering was MOTABeta
hmmm I personally wouldn't care for a subscription thing, I am happy to wait for things. I also don't care for payed testing, sure I get things but then there is no fun in it. Its different when say a new game comes out, I apply and get a test position, I then test the game, and put in stuff maybe contribute sounds and ideas. I then get a copy for free, well maybe I don't. but still if I do get it for free and even if I don't I can say look I put work into that, part of this is mine because I thought of x idea. Now if I payed for it, its like, well I payed for this, so I expect this, it is my right to get this, because I payed for it, and you will give it to me or else. See, all the fun is gone. Re: [Audyssey] python compiler
thank you thomas! Actualy, I figured it out. My problem was that I had told notepad to save the file as a .txt rather then "All files" .py Thanks for your help! As far as the librarys, I have the python inturpretor installed, wich I used to run this the application I just wrote. Is that all I need as well as the source file for py2exe to work? If you can afford it Microsoft has a subscription for msdn that allows you to download betas for MS Office, Windows, etc and you can upgrade to the full product for a discount when it comes out. It is expensive, but it is a way of getting legal copies of their software as they become available, and for a discount when they come out. If I set up a similar service on my web site people would donate x amount each year for games, and as a result they would get all alpha, beta, and full releases of my games for a reduced price or for nothing at all. That's a way of putting money into the company, but also giving people x number of games for a base fee. also how do I run py2exe, as I'm not seeing it in the start menu, nor in my python submenu? Thanks much, Nick On 10/1/09, Nick Helms wrote: > thank you thomas! Actualy, I figured it out. Re: [Audyssey] python compiler
Hi Nick, that depends on the application. If you plan to write games you will need to download and install additional libraries such as PyGame for starts. HTH Nick Helms wrote: thank you thomas! Re: [Audyssey] python compiler
Hi nick, I think I need to explain this a bit clearer. As you probably know Python is a scripting language and requires an interpretor to run. Therefore it is not really compiled to a native Windows program as would be the case if you used a language like C or C++. What py2exe really does is it bundles the Python interpretor and your source code together into an exe file, but it isn't compiled in the triditional sense of the word. It is more like packaged in an executable archive. I hope that makes sense. Anyway, if you want to use py2exe to make an executable archive you'll have to get use to working with the Windows command line for this. Most python tools like that are command line only, not graphical applications, so you have to be somewhat familiar with the Windows command prompt to use them. Here is an overview how py2exe works. First, download and install py2exe from http://www.py2exe.org and install the correct version for your interpretor. Make sure you get the one that is for your version of the Python interpretor. Else you can end up screwing things up a bit. Second, you have to create a custom setup script for your application. Generally this is easy, but for a newby this is an unexpected step. Create a filecalled setup.py, and then you will write a script something like this. For example let us just say the program is called Test. import setup import py2exe setup (console=["Test.py"], zipfile=None) Once you have created and saved your setup script you now have to build the Python exe archive via the command line. Generally you would type a command like this in your source directory. python setup.py py2exe --bundle 1 If everything worked correctly you would have a file called Test.exe in your dist directory. Re: [Audyssey] Preordering was MOTABeta
i'd set that up now, smile, then people who pre-ordered the game could tr all betas and everyone else would have to wait until full release that way you are making more money On 2 Oct 2009, at 04:53, Yohandy wrote: wow thomas. good idea!
