Re: [JAWS-Users] going back to previous version of jaws

2018-07-20 Thread Fernando Gregoire
There's no need to uninstall newer versions of JAWS. Unlike other programs,
many JAWS versions can work together in the same system, provided no more
than one is running at the same time.
I would simply install JAWS 14 over the most recent versions, using the
/Type Safe command-line switch to prevent system-level components like FS
Video Intercept, which are shared components, from being replaced with
older versions.

Hope it helps!

Re: [JAWS-Users] Actions recommended

2018-07-11 Thread Fernando Gregoire
Hi,

This is the icon of the Windows Defender Security Center. Besides the
Antivirus component, this new app gives recommendations on performance and
security settings in general, as well as for missing drivers.
Unless you don't have another antivirus than Windows Defender,
recommendations of this app are not very useful. They are about things you
can configure in Settings and Control Panel or for Store/UWP apps.
The options you describe are not recommended actions, but the context menu
of this icon. To see the report of which areas have recommended actions to
apply, ignore or learn more about them, simulate a left double click on the
icon and use the Touch Cursor.

Hope it helps!

Re: [JAWS-Users] Using the mouse

2018-07-02 Thread Fernando Gregoire
Unfortunately you will have to ask for sighted assistance.
Even if you manage to make JAWS dragging simulation commands to work, it
works with specific objects instead of allowing to draw.
The only suggestion I think is to enable the Mouse Echo feature (press
JAWS+SPACE, E) and see if you can locate the area for signature by using
your actual mouse, and then hold the left button and drag as if you were
signing something on a paper dotted line.

Hope it helps!

Re: [JAWS-Users] Good ole' Eloquence

2018-06-27 Thread Fernando Gregoire
Yes, Ivona voice have excellent quality. However, since JAWS does not have
entries for U.S. Spanish and this is the dialect reported by Ivona voices
into American Spanish, JAWS reads punctuation using English names when
using some of these voices. These voices, in addition, have the problem I
described with exclamation marks.
In older versions, you could configure JAWS to let synthesizer to handle
punctuation speaking. This is no longer available in Settings Center.
Also, like any SAPI 5 voice in JAWS, it often changes voices between PC
cursor and tutor messages incorrectly. This problem sometimes happens with
Eloquence too, but not very often.

Re: [JAWS-Users] Help in setting up macros in word 2010

2018-06-27 Thread Fernando Gregoire
Hi Al,

If all you need is to insert form fields for data whose value can only be
true or false, it is not necessary to complicate your life with macros/VBA.
A checkbox form field should be enough.
Regarding the fact JM described you about form creation not being the same
on newer versions of Word, it effectively reffers mostly to an
accessibility consideration. In Word 2007 and later, Microsoft implemented
a new thing called “content controls,” which have existing functionality of
classic form fields but also include capabilities such as deletion when
completed which make them suitable for templates and other content
reutilization scenarios.
The problem, as the Freedom Scientific tutorial for creating accessible
forms in Word, is that those new content controls are not currently
accessible with the keyboard. Fortunately Word still has the option, in the
Developer tab together with the new content controls, a split button called
“Legacy Control” which allows you to insert a form field like the ones
available in Word 2003 and earlier, which are backward compatible and more
accessible with the keyboard and JAWS.

Hope it helps!

Re: [JAWS-Users] Good ole' Eloquence

2018-06-25 Thread Fernando Gregoire
I always used and still use Eloquence for dayly screen reading.
Although other engines have more human-sounding voices, most do not change
intonation correctly when there are question or exclamation marks, or
change with random results. At least in Spanish, Eloquence is the only
engine which clearly change intonation in all of these cases if the text is
well punctuated.
At least in Spanish, Eloquence only have two problems.
First, whetter you use Castilian or Latin American, the y letter is read
the same as i, which is not right when navigating by character. I solve
this by adding a JAWS dictionary rule, only for Eloquence and Spanish, that
makes a nonintrusive sound each time an y appears. It is important to
choose a nonintrusive sound, because the y in Spanish must be pronnounced
the same as “i” when in a phrase is like the English “and”.
The second and most important problem is that there's not a Spanish
Eloquence dialect that correctly read sillables with sh and, at the same
time, distinct sounds of c, s and z. While the Castilian Spanish
differentiates these sounds like in Spain but does not correctly read the
sh sillables, Latin American is the oposite. While the behabiour of Latin
American Spanish matches the way in which we treat these aspects in most
Latin American countries (even when this language setting is made thinking
in Mexico), there should be a language setting mixing these two advantages
like other engines do.

Last, but not least, Eloquence does not become unstable when activating the
Caps During Say All option in JAWS, which allows to read a word in a louder
pitch when it contains capital letters during a Say All. This option can be
turned on also when using other engines like Vocalizer, but even the
various Vocalizer versions specifically aimed for Freedom Scientific
products become sluggish at changing pitch for specific words in long
phrases.
What about question and exclamation marks intonation with speech engines in
English?

Re: [JAWS-Users] Problem with OCR on a TIF file with multiple pages

Hi Debby,

This is certainly something that FS should inprove in a future major or
minnor release.
As a workaround, however, you could save the file as PDF by using a virtual
printer, such as the one included with Foxit Reader (this software is
comparably accessible as Adobe Reader and easier to create basic things) or
the one built into Windows 10, called Microsoft Print to PDF.
In my experience, JAWS has no problem recognizing a PDF file with multiple
pages.

Hope it helps!

[JAWS-Users] formatting Facebook notes

2018-06-20 Thread Fernando Gregoire
Hi all,

A long time ago, it was possible to format text in Facebook notes by using HTML
tags like , , etc.

Then, in 2014 or so, they introduced a WYSIWYG editor which no longer supported
HTML tags. Instead, we had to select text, disable JAWS Forms Mode and, below
the editor and the Post button, there was a list of links with different
options like Bold, Italic etc. which applied these attributes to the selected
text.

Now I'm trying to format text on a note, but JAWS is not detecting the links
with the different formattings. I know these links are present, because when I
select text it appears, below the Post button, a button saying Close the Popup
and Return, which is not present when no text is selected.

I've tried both with Firefox, Chrome and Internet Explorer, both with JAWS and
NVDA, with the same results in all cases.

Does someone know how to format text on a Facebook note right now by using only
the keyboard?

Thanks in advance!

actually were in when you opened the JAWS window with INSERT+J.
To make the Select a Voice Profile dialog to detect the application from which
you opened it, open it by pressing CTRL+JAWS+S from wittin the desired
application instead of using the JAWS menus.

Hope it helps!

In the past I could change the voice just for the Word program by going into
options/voices/voice profiles Now when I go into that dialog box it only wants
to change the voice for the Jaws window instead of Word? I am confused.

Re: [JAWS-Users] JAWS Settings

2018-06-18 Thread Fernando Gregoire
Hi Dani,

Unless you have modified and saved a full copy of default.jss (and compiled
default.jsb) script file in your user folder, there's usually no problem
copying user settings between versions. For example, I always copy my
default dictionary and JCFs of programs for which I toggled Sleep Mode on,
especially games.
This always was as simple as copying files from the Settings\(language) of
the source JAWS version in your user folder to the Settings\(language) of
the target one. In JAWS 2018 and latter this is even simpler, because you
can create a backup using the JAWS utility for this and then use the JAWS
wizard to export only one file in the target version, with the advantage
that you do not need to know exact location for copying the files, as well
as you can check and uncheck individually and in groups things you want to
copy or not from the backup file to the target version.

Hope it helps!

Re: [JAWS-Users] Reading multiple formatting in a doc

2018-06-10 Thread Fernando Gregoire
Hi Wayne,

If columns are part of a table, you can move between them using TAB and
SHIFT+TAB, or with JAWS table navigation methods, either by pressing
ALT+LEFT/RIGHT ARROW, or JAWS+SPACEBAR, T, and then the arrow keys.
If columns are not actually part of a table, as far as I know, there's no quick
way for moving between then.

Hope it helps!

Hello- I have a Spanish workbook in MS Word 2007. I am using JAWS 7 with
Windows 7. The doc has different formatting on a single page. There is standard
text, a table and an area with 2 columns. How can I move back and forth between
the 2 columns because the first column has the Spanish word and column 2 has
the translation across from it?

Re: [JAWS-Users] Question on Firefox 60.0.1 settings

2018-05-29 Thread Fernando Gregoire
Hi Andy,

A long time ago it was necessary to uncheck this item in order to force
Firefox to don't use Direct3D even on Windows Vista and newer, which
prevented to use JAWS cursor. It was not related to JAWS Virtual PC Cursor
support.
Problems with Firefox 57 and newer with JAWS are not related to hardware
acceleration, but to the fact by default Firefox 57 and newer use a
different process for each tab, and unlike Chrome the infrastructure for
transferring content of different processes to asistive technologies is not
as accurate.

Regarding hardware acceleration, it unloads a bit the CPU by processing
media content like videos and games in the GPU (the graphics card or video
adapter) instead of the CPU or processor. This is especially convenient on
slow CPUs like the ones of low end netbook computers or some older ones,
but perhaps more power consumming and not as useful on more powerful CPUs.
Anyway, I always prefer to turn this on in order to leave CPU free for most
other programs which don't specifically support GPU processing.

Hope it helps!

Hi Mike,

I'm glad this worked for you.
It would be nice to know the exact Registry key created or modified by this
policy, to make this change on Windows 10 Home Edition, which unlike more
advanced ones, does not have the Group Policy Editor. Unfortunately I have no

Hi Mike and all,

If the confirmation message appears on the screen but JAWS is not saying it,
perhaps it's helpful to know that in Windows 10 balloons was replaced with
toasts, which like notifications in the Action Center are handled by the
ShellExperienceHost process, too unstable like most UWP apps and areas,
unfortunately increasing.
JAWS 17 and newer have a verbosity setting concerning Windows 10 notifications,
but it is not as accurate as balloon reading, which was being developed since
Windows XP.
If you have Windows 10 Pro, there's a group policy which allow to use balloons
instead of new toast notifications.
Press WINDOWS+R, type the following and then press ENTER:
gpedit.msc
In the three view go to User Configuration, Administrative Templates, Start
Menu and Taskbar.
When you reach Start Menu and Taskbar, tab to the list view.
In the list view, find the following policy:
Disable showing balloon notifications as toasts

Press ENTER to open properties of this policy, tab to the group of radio
buttons and change from Not Configured to Enabled, and press OK or ENTER.
When finished, restart the computer for this change to take effect.

By the way, File Explorer and other system and third-party apps which
previously shown balloons will do that exactly as in prior Windows versions,
including JAWS ability to simulate a left mouse click.

Hope it helps!

Re: [JAWS-Users] Superscript in Word 2016

2018-05-23 Thread Fernando Gregoire
It is nice JAWS to offer many so different built-in schemes and, in case
none of them suit our needs, the capability of configuring each aspect of a
scheme.
For dayly use, I'm right with the Classic scheme with only one (technically
six) modification: instead of hearing heading level numbers, I configured
the Classic scheme to play a different piano note depending on the specific
heading level, therefore navigating by headings or reading documents with
many titles is faster.
Since I rarely need JAWS to report each attribute or font change in a text
(usually INSERT+F for specific parts is enough), I'm not confident with
Proofreading-like schemes that indicate changes simply by reading the
affected with another voice or pitch. For these cases, I prefer built-in
variants of the Classic Scheme instead.

Regarding Word changing automatically superscripts, subscripts and many
other things, I find useful to have the Provide Feedback with Sound option
checked. On this topic, it plays a Liquid Paper sound when Word changes
something automatically, and a thighter one when you place your caret over
a text which was modified automatically, although in this case by default
JAWS say “Smart tag: Undo automatic actions,” which indicate you can press
ALT+SHIFT+F10 to open a context menu related to the correction made.

Hope it helps!

Re: [JAWS-Users] Superscript in Word 2016

2018-05-20 Thread Fernando Gregoire
Hi Adrian,

You were told nice alternatives to make JAWS report superscript and subscript,
so it makes no sense I repeat many things others already said.
Regarding Word automatically not changing ordinals, this is controlled by the
AutoFormat As You Type auto-correct options. These options are per-program
basis, so it is normal it is enabled in Outlook and disabled in Word.
To enable this in Word, go to the File tab, Word Options.
In the Categories list box, choose Proofing and tab to the Auto-Correct Options.
In the dialog opened by this button, press CTRL+TAB until you reach the
AutoFormat As You Type page. Then tab to a checkbox like Ordinals (1th) with
Superscript and press SPACE BAR to check this. I can't give you the exact name
of this checkbox, since many options of this tab have language-specific names.
In the case of ordinals, in Spanish there are both two specific symbols and, in
practice, many people incorrectly use suffixes like “do”, “ra”, etc.

Hope it helps!

Subject: [JAWS-Users] Superscript in Word 2016

Hi. In previous versions of Word, superscript would be verbalized when I moved
character by character. also, when I typed a number such as 14th, Word would
automatically make the "th" superscript. Neither is happening with Word 2016
and the current release of JAWS 2018. Even more disconcerting, a sighted
assistant tells me that sometimes the "th" or "nd" is superscript, sometimes
not, probably because I'm working in a document created in an earlier version
of Word.

Can anyone suggest how:

  1. To get Word to make "th" and "nd" in numbers like 14th and 2nd
automatically appear as superscript?
  2. To get JAWS to report superscript, and also subscript, in Word documents?
I looked at the intermediate settings for anything that might help, but
nothing leapt out.

Note: Superscript is handled fine in Outlook 2016, which I have tethered to
Word 2016.

Thanks.

Re: [JAWS-Users] Firefox 60

2018-05-13 Thread Fernando Gregoire
Hi Adrian,

Non-screen reader users find less limitations because web developers often try
and patch their pages on a case by case basis for the major browsers.
The problem with accessibility is not only the different implementation of ARIA
support in different browsers, but also different implementation of ARIA
support in each screen reader, which is different itself and highly dependant
on how each browser provides this support. If this is a big mess thinking only
in different JAWS versions, this complicates even more when evaluating NVDA
(luckily the source code is available and has some useful development and
testing tools not present in JAWS). Do you imagine this big mess if you add
other less used screen readers like Windows 10 Narrator, Xerox SystemAccess,
Dolphin Hal/Supernova, and Thunder? Note that I only mentioned screen readers
for Windows, excluding different TalkBack versions and other tools available
for Android, iOS and Macintosh VoiceOver, etc.

I don't know why, but usually I don't need to switch between different
browsers. Chrome is very accessible and functional for browsing, but honestly I
am trying each new Firefox release in wait to the problems with JAWS get
finally fixed, because it offers an UI and more customizability than Chrome.

Aaron,

Thanks for posting your detailed rant. I, too, am enormously frustrated that
browsing has become so time--consuming and sometimes unreliable. I'm constantly
switching among three browsers and two versions of JAWS because different
combinations work best with different websites, and even then some websites
remain hard, if not impossible, to navigate. The other day, a certain website
owner had taken steps to make everything accessible, only for me to install
Firefox 60 and generate a host of new issues. No wonder some website designers
get frustrated with accessibility obligations.

Developments on the Web seem to be moving faster than screenreader companies
can keep up with. But I wonder why non-screenreader users aren't also
encountering limitations with different browsers, since each seems to function
differently.

Re: [JAWS-Users] secondary language and voice

2018-05-12 Thread Fernando Gregoire
Hi Holger,

At least from JAWS UI, in a given voice profile you can only set speed and
punctuation on a per-language basis.
As an alternative, you may create a new voice profile whose primary language is
Spanish and switch to it with CTRL+JAWS+S. However, this has the disadvantage
of language detection feature not working automatically.

Hope it helps!

Re: [JAWS-Users] Firefox 60

2018-05-11 Thread Fernando Gregoire
Hi Cristóbal and all,

I have the same problems with Firefox 60 and JAWS 2018 April update that I had
with non-ESR versions 57-59, except that now the virtual buffer does not seem
to be blank at short intervals. Navigation through and building of the virtual
buffer is slow even on very simple pages, and commands like INSERT+F7 to
generating lists of items often time out with no results.
I admit I'm now testing on a netbook with an Intel Atom N570 processor at 1.66
ghz and 2 GB of RAM, which is certainly not suitable for a multi-process
architecture like Quantum. I should also test on my desktop computer, with 4 GB
o RAM and a dual-core Pentium processor at 2.60 ghz.
Unfortunately, unless I use ESR versions, I still need to use Chrome to
continue using JAWS when browsing the Internet.

Subject: Re: [JAWS-Users] Firefox 60

I wrote VFO with issues I was having with Jaws and Firefox 60 and Jaws losing
speech for a second or two when arrowing around a webpage. Almost as if it was
catching up with the keystrokes. Jaws wasn't slow or sluggish per say as when
it was moving around, it felt responsive, but the speech silencing thing was
getting annoying. That along with an existing issue I've been having with Jaws
just randomly losing focus on any site and me having to maximize the window or
tab or shift plus tab to get focus back all the time made the user experience a
frustrating one.
The response I got back was:
Thank you for contacting VFO ® Technical Support. I have tried Firefox 60 with
the most recent version of JAWS® 2018 and have not really found the issues you
mention. At times, I have found that sometimes, when a Web site is still
loading, it might get sluggish, but if you give it a minute or 2, you can
navigate just fine. I just spent about 5-10 minutes navigating a very
resource-intensive Web site and was actually very impressed with performance.
Therefore, I am not sure this is a general issue but one that might be specific
to your machine.

So, aside from me not waiting around a minute or two for every single webpage
to load when I didn't have to before, looks like I'm going to have to call tech
support so I can demonstrate for them these odd speech pauses and whatnot.
Don't know if I'll be able to do so anytime soon as I work during the day, but
anyway. I've gone back to V 52.X in the meantime.
Regarding the alerts, I was able to disable those with an about:config tweek a
while back. I'll have to dig around for it again.

I'm experiencing several problems with Firefox 60. Here's a copy of the email I
just sent VFO explaining what they are. I did mention in the message that I
recently upgraded from Firefox 52ESR to 60.

  1. When I try to log in to a website, Firefox's message offering to save the
log-in information is spoken, and then spoken several more times. I caught that
to decline, I should press alt-d. when I did so, Firefox hung up and eventually
gave me the options to wait or close. After what was already a long wait, I
closed it.

I've encountered this message several times since. Pressing alt-d led to the
same result, as did my try with alt-n (which often brings up other options).
The only way to get past this message is to wait for it to go away.

  1. On the donations page of the website www.wnyc.org,
the combo boxes for state and country don't give any information, e.g., state
abbreviations. These combo boxes do work with IE11. A similar problem came up
on another website with Firefox 60, but I can't be sure I've diagnosed the
problem yet.

  1. Placemarkers are behaving erratically. None carried over from Firefox
52ESR, so I've had to start over again putting them in place. One repeating
problem is that even though I uncheck the box that would apply the placemarker
throughout a website, the placemarkers all apply on every page.
This means I've accumulated twelve placemarkers on every page of one website I
regularly visit, even though I want at most three per page.

  1. I'm also finding that some placemarkers just don't work when I press the
k key. Even though the placemarker list shows one for that location, k doesn't
locate it.

I'm working with JAWS 2018.1804.26.400,, and my OS is Windows 7.

Re: [JAWS-Users] keyboard shortcuts for reading a powerpoint 2016

2018-05-06 Thread Fernando Gregoire
Hi Paul,

Unless the file is .pps or .ppsx, by default it is opened for editing, which
means you can only read by tabbing from object to object and changing between
slides with PAGE UP and PAGE DOWN.
To open the slideshow view, which is the default view when the file is .pps,
press F5. In this view, although you can access a detailed list from witting
the context menu, basically JAWS uses the Virtual Cursor; to go to the next
slide press SPACE, and BACKSPACE to go to the prior; if you want to go to a
specific slide you can press a number and then ENTER, but before pressing the
number you'll have to press JAWS+3, because numbers in JAWS are assigned to
heading navigation by level when Virtual Cursor is active.

Hope it helps!

However, you can prevent JAWS from refreshing the virtual buffer by changing

Re: [JAWS-Users] Jaws OCR?

2018-05-03 Thread Fernando Gregoire
Hi Adrian and all,

As I understood, Arvind is asking if it's possible to launch an OCR command on
an image of a web page with no need to save the image or other advanced tricks
first.
If that was the question, although theoretically should be possible to locate
the Virtual Cursor over the graphic and press JAWS+SPACE, O, C to recognize the
current control (graphics are a control type as well for JAWS various
managements like verbosity level settings and speech and sound schemes), I
never could get this to work for graphics in web browsers. Therefore, I manage
to open the graphic's context menu to choose the item for displaying the image
alone. When I can display the image, I press CTRL+S to save the actual image
file to a folder in the computer, and then I can get JAWS (or a specialized OCR
software like ABBYY FineReader in case of complex documents, but these are not
frequent in web graphics). Since I prefer making JAWS to recognize the file
itself instead of the screen contents because it is more accurate, when there
was no direct recognition of image files like JPEG ones in JAWS, that is before
version 2018, I used to choose the option for printing the image and selecting
in Windows 10 the virtual printer called Microsoft Print to PDF which does
exactly that, so then I could open the resulting PDF in Adobe Reader and make
JAWS to recognize the file itself by pressing JAWS+SPACE, O, D.

Hope it helps!

Hi. If you're working with the JAWS OCR feature, the OCR conversion takes place

want the OCR conversion to occur in the same window.

Re: [JAWS-Users] High Importance E-mail

2018-05-03 Thread Fernando Gregoire
Hi Tom,

Yes, using access keys underline in the ribbon is also convenient. I can't
however indicate commands of that type here, because unlike the ones in
ribbons of Windows apps such as WordPad and File Explorer, access keys are
different in non-English Office versions, because Office 2007 and higher
allow some Office 2003 access keys (which were language-specific as in any
menu bar) for backwards compatibility. By the way, while the access key for
attaching a recent file in Spanish Outlook 2016 is ALT+B, A, V, the key
sequence will probably be different in the English version.
For the case of the High Importance button, even when I don't remember the
access key, I'm sure ALT+H is ALT+O in Spanish, the one for the Home tab
for compatibility with the Tools menu previously opened with ALT+H (Tools
in Spanish is Herramientas).

Re: [JAWS-Users] High Importance E-mail

2018-05-01 Thread Fernando Gregoire
Hi Tom,

The easiest way to add a keystroke for this is to add the item to the Quick
Access Toolbar by opening a new message, finding in the Message tab the High
Importance button, pressing APPLICATIONS or SHIFT+F10 and choosing Add to Quick
Access Toolbar item. If you haven't added nor removed anything from the Quick
Access Toolbar for the message editing window the High Importance button should
be the fourth item, so it would be assigned to ALT+4.
Since ALT+NUMBER keystrokes are assigned in JAWS for reading Outlook message
headers, you will have to press JAWS+3 before using the abobe mentioned
keystroke.

Hope it helps!

Hi Arvind,

You can get these scripts at http://www.dlee.org/youtube.
If you will use the scripts in English, the installer makes everything for you

If you speak another language different than English, you will have to
translate the scripts yourself or ask for them in your local communities. As an

Re: [JAWS-Users] The JAWS cursor in Windows 10, and certain programs

2018-04-26 Thread Fernando Gregoire
Hi,

As I said in my prior message, there's no more information than the bullet
in the enhancement list for JAWS 2018 April update and the description of
the option in Settings Center. Even in the English help (Spanish one
sometimes adds certain information with a small delay), there is no mention
at all about this new Accessibility Monitor API, and as far as I know
there's also no more related content on the FSDN, technical support
bulletings, Freedom Scientific blog nor the Enhancements in Scripting page.

Best regards,
Fernando Gregoire

Re: [JAWS-Users] The JAWS cursor in Windows 10, and certain programs

2018-04-25 Thread Fernando Gregoire
Hi,

Freedom Scientific is aware of the increasingly common problems regarding
JAWS/Invisible Cursor and other things which use the Off Screen Model (OSM).
Because of this, in the JAWS 2018 April update, an option was added to the
Miscellaneous group of Settings Center.
This option is a checkbox named Use Accessibility Driver. By default it is
checked, which means the old behavior is used, but you can try to uncheck it to
use a new technology called Accessibility Monitor API.
This is not currently on the JAWS help system and by default it uses the
classic infrastructure, so I assume this is still an experimental development
we should use at our own risk; perhaps someone at Freedom Scientific could
confirm this thought.

Hope it helps!

Subject: [JAWS-Users] The JAWS cursor in Windows 10, and certain programs

Hi everyone.

I'm using Windows 10 1709 with JAWS 18. I use a few old programs, like Soulseek
nS, where I have most noticed this issue, but I've noted it using other
programs as well; just can't think of them at the moment. This slsk program
requires some JAWS cursor use, to move the mouse pointer, open the search
dialog, etc. Usually, it works fine, although if the window ever accidentally
gets minimised, I lose access to the program entirely and have to restart it -
I think this is some incompatibility issue with Windows 10.
Now, periodically, I have noticed that when the window is up, and I am trying
to use the jAWS cursor to move around, it will seem to get stuck.
Instead of saying "blank" or not saying anything (as was reported by another
user a few weeks back), it will say a bunch of really weird stuff, like it is
seeing an example of every kind of control and attribute and trying to report
them, even though they are not there. It will say stuff like "checked unchecked
pressed clickable draggable droppable invalid entry read only", and I won't be
able to move the cursor anywhere. I have noticed that resizing the window or
routing the cursor to PC sometimes solves the problem, but not consistently. As
I know this behaviour manifests in other things, too, I was wondering if anyone
had experienced this, and what you do to "free up" the cursor. Any thoughts?

Re: [JAWS-Users] Permanent placemarkers

2018-04-21 Thread Fernando Gregoire
Hi Adrian,

Yes, Spanish JAWS versions fill this edit box automatically too, but I usually
change this automatic text a bit, especially by making deletions.
As an example, in a website in which articles aren't marked with headings nor
regions, I added a placemarker into the line it tells the estimated reading
time.
When I first added this placemarker, the automatically generated text included
the specific time of the article I opened at that time, for example: “Estimated
reading time: 6 minutes”.
To make the placemarker helpful for all articles, in addition to checking the
box to apply this placemarker for all pages in the current domain, in the
automatically generated text I removed everything after the colon.

You surely also keep this in mind when creating a placemarker, but I never
needed to mark a place in which there is a link to make the placemarker to be
reliable. The only case in which I had bad experiences was visiting a
previously placemarked page but using a different web browser than the one used
when I created the placemarkers. I suppose this is somewhat related to the
Responsive Web Design about which Freedom Scientific posted on their blog at
the end of 2017, but I had problems even on very standard HTMLs.

Hope it helps!

Yes, Fernando, and I usually check that box. To add to what you write here,
when you check the "anchor to text" box, a new tab field appears with the text
JAWS detects at that location. This is the edit field you refer to, but (as I'm
sure you know) it isn't blank. You have a choice of keeping that text or, as
you suggest, typing in something different. However, I can't quite see why one
would write something different. Regardless, this "anchor to text" option in
the dialog can help in maintaining the placemarker but, in my experience, it is
no guarantee. Even if the Website designer keeps the same text there, I've
found that a text-associated placemarker isn't necessarily reliable unless it
is also associated with a link.

It sounds as though your experience might be different. I wonder, for example,
if the Spanish version of JAWS doesn't fill in the edit field.

I should mention that I haven't read anywhere about this link relationship.
It's just something I noticed over time.

Hi Adrian,

Have you looked at the Associate with Text checkbox? When adding a placemarker
this checkbox is unchecked by default, so you mark a line in the virtual
representation instead of a specific text, therefore any small change on the
page causes the link or whatever unit you have marked to be misslocated.
If you know a string of text that the part you want to mark always have
regardless of changes, you can check this checkbox, tab once and enter the
corresponding part of text. By the way, you will always reach the same element
as long as the string of text you have associated to the placemarker is
present, no matter of the line number.

Hope it helps!

Earlier this week, Justin commented that placemarkers don't always hold their
place, which is true. However, I've found that they are dependable when I put
them on a link. Sometimes it means putting it a line or two away from a logical
spot, but I think they've been stable every time I do this.
As a reminder, the dialog to set a permanent placemarker is begun with
control-shift-k. Tab from there.

Re: [JAWS-Users] word 2016 protected mode

2018-04-19 Thread Fernando Gregoire
Hi Steven,

You don't need JAWS cursor to activate this button. This is because this
message and button are in the status bar, and since Office 2007 the status bar
is also natively focusable with the keyboard by pressing F6.
This wouldn't be the case on anything on the status bar in Office 2003 and
earlier. In these versions you can't get to the status bar with native keyboard
commands, so you are required to use JAWS cursor unless you can find the item
you need in a menu or toolbar.

Hope it helps!

Re: [JAWS-Users] word 2016 protected mode

2018-04-18 Thread Fernando Gregoire
Hi Mr. Ed,

This command goes to the Backstage view or File tab and there, in the Info tab,
presses the Enable Editing button.
Regarding why many documents open in Protected View by default, this is the
case for files saved with the Office 97-2003 formats whose file extensions
hadn't a final x or m. Since these files could contain macros with no way to
know at a glance if this was the case, and because macros may be an important
security risk as this is executable code inside the document, by default Office
2010 and latter open files from e-mail, Internet or potentially unsafe
locations like removable drives in Protected View, which disables any macros
and other similar technologies until you expressly authorize to work with the
file at its full.
This is not the case for the new file types whose extensions have a final x or
m, because files ending with x, unlike those ending with m, cannot contain
macros.

You can, of course, disable this for all documents in the Trust Center Settings
dialog for each Office program separately.

Hope it helps!

Re: [JAWS-Users] Changeing JAWS' volume

Hi net bat66 and Mike,

Does this procedure works when using Eloquence? In current JAWS versions there
is no Volume slider when setting a voice profile with Eloquence, unlike with
other synths like SAPI 5 or any Vocalizer variant.
As I remember from older JAWS versions, this control when using Eloquence was
simply a read-only edit box which said “Use your system's volume.”

Thanks in advance!

forwarded from mike bee on the main jaws list.
1. Open Keyboard Manager without any applications / programs open to make sure
you land on, Default, when you open Keyboard Manager. Do this by pressing,
Jaws key + F2, press the letter, K, until you have Keyboard Manager
highlighted, & press enter. If you don't have, Default, highlighted when
opening the keyboard manager press the letter, D, until you do.

2. Find the following to assign keystrokes to them:
DecreaseVoiceVolume, None
Decrease system volume, None
IncreaseVoiceVolume, None
Increase system Volume, None
*Note: None, means that there is not a keystroke assigned to these functions
/ tasks.

3. On each of these functions / tasks press, Control + h, to open an edit field
to insert the keystroke you would like to use for this particular function /
task. *Note: Make sure not to press any other keys other than the keystroke
you want!
4. After entering your desired keystroke tab one time, and there's a checkbox
for assigning this keystroke to desktop keys only, usually people will uncheck
this.

5. Tab to, Okay, Press ENTER, and choose OK in the confirmation dialog which
appears.

6. You'll be returned to the list view of scripts. Use the same steps with
the other functions / tasks listed above.

7. Close Keyboard Manager with, Alt + F4.

Take care. Mike. Go Dodgers!

Hi Richard,

I got one better than your way to create a shortcut.

All you have to do both in Windows 7 or Windows 10 is bring up either the run
command with Windows Key+R or simply the search box with the Windows key.

Now type sndvol and press enter and bingo, you are on the volume control.

I have read you can add a -f flag, e.g. sndvol -f to bring u p the master
volume directly but I found that even just sndvol will do this.

Here is the Jaws speech history as to what this sounds like, first without and
then with the -f switch, I am using just the Windows key/Cortana search box and
not the run command, note that the Jaws speech history gives you the result
after you type every letter of “sndvol”, if you type it fast you never hear
most of that, but I left it in just to show it:

Cortana

S, Search box edit

Sn, Snipping Tool, Desktop app

snd, See web results, Press right to open preview

sndv, See web results, Press right to open preview

sndvo, See web results, Press right to open preview

sndvol, Run command – this is where I pressed enter

Volume Mixer - Speakers (Realtek High Definition Audio) dialog

Speakers

Speakers

up down slider

83 – I am now pressing the down arrow several times and again the up arrow

82 percent

81 percent

80 percent

81 percent

82 percent

83 percent

Now here is what it sounds like with the -f switch added after SndVol, I left
out all the suggestions which come up after each letter and go straight to the
final one:

Cortana

sndvol -f, Run command

dialog

up down slider

83

82 percent

81 percent

Only difference seems to be that adding the -f switch doesn’t verbalize Volume
Mixer - Speakers (Realtek High Definition Audio) dialog, Speakers, Speakers and
instead it says right away the volume percentage.

You could of course create a shortcut with “sndvol” or “sndvol -f” but I
personally find pressing the Windows key and typing sndvol is just about as
fast as pressing Control+Alt+V or whatever shortcut you would assign the
shortcut..

I guess another thing you can do is create the volume shortcut and put it on
the taskbar, if you had it at the very left then pressing Windows Key+1 would
do the trick as well.

I just tried it using SndVol -f for the shortcut which I called “Volume”, then
I pinned it to the taskbar and dragged it to the first position and when I
pressed Windows+1 Jaws instantly says “Dialogue, up down slider, 81”.

Sieghard

Translation of this info into Spanish is not very accurate, because by reading
the Spanish text seems that international sales phone and fax mentioned are
only for Canada, while in English it clearly reads “including Canada.”

Hope it helps!

Re: [JAWS-Users] What Windows10 version?

2018-04-11 Thread Fernando Gregoire
Steve is right. Furthermore, Pro edition allows to use the Group Policy Editor
that, even when you aren't in an enterprise, it allows to make some advanced
settings that are not available in Control Panel or Settings, and without this
Group Policy Editor would require to manually editing the Registry, which is
more risky if you are not cautious.
Also the Computer Management console has more tools than this one in Home
edition, such as a GUI to manage users and local groups, which otherwise would
require to edit the Registry.

Of course there are some other features not available in Home edition, but I
think these are the more relevant ones for a home/non-business use.

Hope it helps!

Windows 10 pro gives you a bit more control over when updates are installed
than the Home version does.
As far as Jaws performance with other programs, it doesn't matter which version
of Windows 10 you have -- Home, Pro, or Ultimate.

Hi all,

Windows 10 version 1803 is already being delivered for Insiders even in the
Release Preview ring. Builds on this particular ring are identical to the ones
that will be released to the general public, unless any critical installation
bug is found. By the way, it is likely that general public to see this release

Re: [JAWS-Users] Opening a second window in Firefox

2018-04-09 Thread Fernando Gregoire
Hi Adrian,

The bad thing here is that this problem is not caused by Firefox, but by JAWS.
This is exactly the same issue that happens when you press CTRL+SHIFT+P to open
a Private Browsing window in Firefox. This bug is not present when you use
Firefox with NVDA.

Regarding information shown in the new tab page, I can't help on this, because
I mostly go to web things I want by using auto-completion in the address bar,
the Jump List of the browser pinned to the taskbar, bookmarks or search queries
entered either in the box focusable by pressing CTRL+K (it is convenient
because it allows to change the search engine on the fly) or in Google's home
page, not the Firefox one that, as you say, has many things I'm not interested
in.

Thank you, Fernando, for recognizing the problem I was trying to describe in my
two recent posts, after I'd done a poor job with the first.

As you suggest, a shift-tab followed by tab brings focus to the URL edit line.
Turning off the virtual cursor does the same thing. Either one is an extra step
compared to IE11, but a minor inconvenience.

That said, I wonder if the new tab screen can be simplified. I don't see how to
delete some of the information presented there. Yes, I could delete some of the
websites Firefox has picked up from previous searches, but it's useful to type
in just the first few letters when I want them. However, why Firefox feels
compelled to list them when IE11 doesn't is beyond me.

Before I get to the list of websites on this screen, I'm confronted with a slew
of useless verbiage that I'd love to remove. I'll close this post with a copy
of that part of the screen:

likely that JAWS turned virtual cursor on even when focus is on the address

If the address bar have another URL, a program on your computer changed Firefox

Hello list,

When my computer did a Windows 10 update a while ago, I noticed JAWS 18 stopped
starting up after log on. It would talk for log on but I'd get radio silence
after I was signed in and would have to use the control-alt-j keystroke I set
in properties to launch it or narrator. It seemed to do this even though it was
set to start after log on. Now I've got an El Braille with JAWS 2018 and the
same thing has happened. Now I need to try connecting a USB keyboard to the El
Braille and try and trigger JAWS or narrator on so the Focus 14 display that
comes with it will work again.

My question is has anybody experienced this and if so, what's the work around
to stop this from happening every time I start my new El Braille? I fixed this
problem on my laptop by simply switching to NVDA as my primary screenreader
until I can figure this out. Thanks for any help you can provide. Regards,

Re: [JAWS-Users] Tips on dealing with/recognising screen-shots?

2018-03-30 Thread Fernando Gregoire
Hi,

If you have Windows 10, you can print as PDF with no need of additional
software.
First, open the image alone to make it fully visible without other content
abobe or below. This is done by opening image's context menu and choosing View
Image or the related command in your specific browser. The easier browser for
this, although worse for most other things, is Internet Explorer, because you
can simply place the JAWS Virtual Cursor on the graphic and press APPLICATIONS
to open the picture's context menu.
When you have the full image opened in your web browser, press CTRL+P to open
the Print dialog box. In the Printer Name combobox, choose Microsoft Print As
PDF and press ENTER.
In the Save as dialog that will appear, give a name for the PDF and specify the
location in which it'll be saved.
When the file is saved, open it in Adobe Reader. If your version of this
program is too old, you may need to update it to a newer one so the JAWS PDF
recognition feature works.
If you are presented a dialog about read unlabeled document, choose Guess the
Reading Order from the Document and press ENTER.
When you are in the document, press the JAWS keystroke to recognize the
document independently of your screen resolution and related settings, that is:
JAWS+SPACEBAR, O, D.
Wait until JAWS displays the OCR Results window and see if the recognized text
is useful.

Hope it helps!

Subject: [JAWS-Users] Tips on dealing with/recognising screen-shots?

Hi everyone.

So, as most of you probably know, a lot of sighted people, when they want to
share or copy something that's on their display, don't copy and paste. They
take screen-shots. One can see how this is convenient; you don't have to worry
about formatting, all images are represented, etc. Obviously though, without
oCR, if there's important information in the screen-shot, it can be frustrating
for a blind user.

So, I have JAWS 18 on this Windows 10 machine. I understand Convenient OCR has
improved with JAWS 2018, but I can only work with what I've got. I'm looking at
a page that contains a screen-shot of a powershell script, which I would like
to be able to read. I have put my cursor where the image is, and done the JAWS
OCR with the "c" parameter. The results are, sadly, as I unfortunately usually
experience with Convenient oCR, just not up to scratch for this purpose. Lots
of scanning errors. It could be that the image is unclear, of course. But I'm
wondering if anyone with more experience can give me a pointer on what I can do
with a screen-shot like this to make the image more susceptible to JAWS oCR.

I'm looking into getting Abbyy Finereader at some point, and I guess at least
one variant of that program comes with a specialised screen-shot application.
That'll be cool, but the software still costs a couple of hundred dollars and
I'm going to have to hold out on that for now.

Any thoughts?

Re: [JAWS-Users] Classic Shell setting

2018-03-28 Thread Fernando Gregoire
Hi Mike,

The Readme provides important links and procedures to solve installation issues
that can affect components like Classic Explorer or Classic IE, which depend on
settings for ActiveX controls.
To know each setting in depth, it is best to see help found in the CHM file.
For Classic Start Menu, you'll realize that many of the individual and specific
settings you can change for a given style are simulations of settings that were
available for these styles in Taskbar and Start Menu Properties dialog of the
corresponding Windows version. This is particularly useful because this dialog
(or the Settings categories in Windows 10) only offer settings for the provided
styles in your current Windows version, and Windows 7 and newer does not
natively offer a choice of classic Start menu style; moreover, from a user's
point of view, Windows 8 and 8.1 have no Start menu at all.

Hi Mike,

Your are right on this. However, the checkboxes about which I want to know are
those available in tree views.
For example, when in Classic Start Menu settings you choose Windows 7 style
advanced settings, you can choose wetter initial focus is in the search box,
or, in Windows XP style, wetter recent programs have keyboard shortcuts with
numbers, initial letters or none, or additional search providers if you use the
Windows 2000 and earlier classic style which had a Search sub-menu. In all
styles you can specify which options to display (Documents, Control Panel etc.)
and how, and here it would be useful to know instantly the states of checkboxes
in a way similar to Folder Options tree view which reports On or Off after the
option name.

Thanks!

Hi Fernando,

The only checkboxes, so to speak, that are read by Jaws are the Basic Settings
& the All Settings radio buttons. You will get these 2 radio buttons after you
click on a setting link, i.e; Open Start menu , press enter on either, Windows
Classic link, Windows XP link, Windows Vista / Windows 7 link. Now after you
press enter, tab to the Basic Settings / All Settings radio buttons, choose
which one you want, tab to, Okay, & press enter. Now your settings are
changed, but for me anyways, I don't know how the chosen settings will look /
be read by Jaws until afterward. This is why I say it takes some playing
around with the Classic, XP, or Vista / Win 7settings, & both the Basic / All
settings to get a feel for how Jaws will read for you. Personally, I don't
care about the Explorer & IE settings, & only configure the Start Menu settings.

After installing Classic Shell you have to go into the various options &
configure them. for example, you need to configure the Start Menu to show the
way you want it.

To do this:
1. Open the Start Menu, & open the All Programs sub-menu.
2. Find the Classic Shell program & open the folder.
3. In here you will have, Classic Explorer Settings, Classic IE9 settings, &
Classic Start Menu settings. Press enter on the 1 of choice to get to your
options.
For example in the Classic Start Menu settings. You have Windows Classic,
Windows XP, & Windows Vista / Windows 7 links.

Subject: [JAWS-Users] Still having problems with JAWS speaking at the log on
screen

Hi folks! This issue is an oldy but a goody, and one that hasn't been fixed
for me yet.

I have two windows 10 computers, and many times JAWS will not say anything at
the log-on screen indicating that I can type the password. Sometimes I can
press Control plus Alt plus Delete, and here the prompt to type my password.
Sometimes, I have to load narrator to find where to put in the password. The
behavior is inconsistent at best.

I wanted to post this to the list, and see if there is anything I can do to
make JAWS work better in this situation. Is there a setting that I need to
check, either in Windows or in JAWS? Any help would be appreciated.

Re: [JAWS-Users] Classic Shell setting

2018-03-28 Thread Fernando Gregoire

Take care. Mike. Go Dodgers!

Hi Holger,

Click on 1 of them & choose from All settings or Basic settings.

It takes a little tinkering around, but eventually you'll get them the way you
want them. I believe I use the Windows Classic & All settings for the Start
menu.
Take care. Mike. Go Dodgers!

Hi Denis,

In keyboards that follows the traditional layout, Scroll Lock is abobe the Home
key on the main or extended keyboard, that is, abobe the center of the keyboard
area that JAWS help names “the six pack”.
In some new keyboards and most laptops, location of this key varies between
manufacturers and models, and may even require to press also an FN (Function)
key.

Hope it helps!

Hi Holger,

Answers you were given are for quickly opening Volume Mixer, but they actually
don't change the volume.
In case your keyboard has no volume keys, JAWS provides two scripts,
IncreaseSystemVolume and DecreaseSystemVolume, that respectively raises or
lower the volume from any application, with no need to open any additional
window, and they announce the volume level to which you just set.
By default these scripts have no key assignment, but it is easy to map to a
convenient keystroke:
1. Press INSERT+J to open the JAWS window or context menu, depending on your
setting.
2. Press ALT+U to open the Utilities menu or sub-menu, depending on your
setting.
3. Press K to open Keyboard Manager.
4. When Keyboard Manager opens, press TAB to move to the right pane, that is,
the one containing key mappings of the file selected in the left pane, that
should be Default if you launched Keyboard Manager as I indicated. If you ran
Keyboard Manager in a different way, press CTRL+SHIFT+D to make sure you're
working in the Default file instead of the one specific for the application
from which you opened Keyboard Manager.
5. In the list view, find the script whose name is DecreaseSystemVolume. You'll
find that it is not assigned to any key.
6. Press CTRL+A to add a keystroke to this script.
7. Press the keystroke you want to use to lower the volume. In my desktop
computer I use CTRL+SCROLL LOCK+DOWN ARROW.
8. Press ENTER, and choose OK in the confirmation dialog which appears.
9. You'll be returned to the list view of scripts. Do the same with the
IncreaseSystemVolume script, which you could assign to CTRL+SCROLL LOCK+UP
ARROW.
10. Close Keyboard Manager with ALT+F4.

Advantages of this method are that volume is changed on the fly with no need to
change the application, and it works even when you are on the Windows Logon
screen. As a disadvantage, these keystrokes don't work when you aren't using
JAWS or when you are in a program in which you configured JAWS to be in Sleep
Mode.

Hope it helps!

Re: [JAWS-Users] task bar

2018-03-25 Thread Fernando Gregoire
Hi Mike,

Combining taskbar buttons means joining buttons belonging to different open
documents in a given program on one single button. For example, if you have two
Word documents opened at the same time and taskbar buttons are combined, you
will not have a button for each document, but only a single button representing
Word that will bring up a list in which you'll be able to select the document
in which you're interested.
By the way, this combo box sets wetter buttons are never combined, always
combined or only when taskbar is full, that is, when no more items fit on the
screen area reserved for the taskbar according to your screen resolution, DPI
scaling and related factors.
But luckily there is, unlike about many other areas in Windows 10, a well
documented help topic that you can access by a link in the Taskbar Settings
category which reads something like “How taskbars are customized?”. The link
says taskbars in plural, because you can have multiple taskbars with different
items, both on multiple monitors or multiple virtual desktops.
As you can see, although Control Panel is being replaced with Settings and the
old dialog for taskbar is almost faced out, fortunately most concepts regarding
these options aren’t so different from the fundamentals you may be familiar in
previous Windows versions.

Hope it helps!

Hi Justin,

There are two factors that can be related to the apps listed when you press
ALT+TAB.
First, in the Taskbar settings that you can quickly open by pressing
ALT+ENTER on the Start button, there's a combo box on wetter taskbar
ALT+buttons
are combined or not. This setting was previously available on the Taskbar and
Start Menu Properties dialog box.
Second, since Windows 10, in the System\Multitasking category of the Settings
app, theres a combobox to choose if pressing ALT+TAB moves through windows of
the current desktop or all of them. If you use multiple desktops, you may need
to adjust this setting in order to be able to alt-tabbing between windows on
all of the open virtual desktops, not only the currently focused one.
Im sorry for not telling you exact names of the settings. I don’t have an
English language pack to actually check them.

Regarding taskbar-related keyboard shortcuts with the Windows Logo key,
WINDOWS+TAB was used in Windows XP and earlier versions to set the focus
WINDOWS+on
the first and subsequently the next item of the taskbar. In Windows Vista and 7
this shortcuts stopped working, unless you had Windows Aero enabled.
The original hotkey, in Windows Vista and later, was changed by WINDOWS+T.
In Windows 10 WINDOWS+TAB also shows open windows, but on the Task View instead
of the Taskbar. In addition to showing open windows, Task View allow to create
and close virtual desktops, as well as moving windows between open desktops.
In Windows 10 version 1803, which is currently in preview and will soon be
released to the general public, the Task View also allows to manage the
Timeline, a feature which group different program windows related with a
specific user work, such as the different Word documents, Outlook or Mail
messages and Edge websites related to a given research, novel etc.

Hope it helps!

Re: [JAWS-Users] VIPRE and Window Defender

2018-03-25 Thread Fernando Gregoire
Hi Holger,

You can use both products altogether, but only one can be configured for
real-time protection.
Windows now takes care of denying activation of WD real-time protection if
you're using a third party AV like VIPRE. You can, in this case, use your third
party AV product for real-time protection and configure Windows Defender to
perform periodic scanning at regular intervals.
Depending on the Windows 10 build, you can configure this on Windows Defender
Security Center or, in older builds, the Update and Security\Windows Defender
category in the Settings app (WINDOWS+I).

Hope it helps!

Re: [JAWS-Users] Outlook or Outlook Express Inquiry

2018-03-25 Thread Fernando Gregoire
Hi,

Outlook is not free, but a part of Office editions higher than home ones. It
works on any Windows version in which you can install an Office version
compatible with the running Windows version.
Outlook Express was the e-mail and newsgroup client included with IE in Windows
XP and earlier. It was free. It is available for downloads in some websites,
but be aware that running this client on Windows later than XP is not
officially supported by Microsoft.
Windows 10 includes a free client called Mail, but it is very basic even
compared with the old Microsoft free alternatives Outlook Express, Windows Mail
included in Vista and Windows Live Mail included with the Windows Live
Essentials suite, together with other stuff like Windows Live Messenger,
Writter, SkyDrive (currently OneDrive), etc.
I strongly recommend you to install Office and use Microsoft Outlook, which is
full featured, customizable and very accessible.

Re: [JAWS-Users] links

2018-03-25 Thread Fernando Gregoire
Hi Holger,

If you are composing your e-mail as plain text, it will actually be no
hyperlinks, so the presence of clickable links will depend on wetter the
recipients e-mail client or web service recognizes web addresses or the type of
link that pertaining text is likely to be.
If you want to be sure that links will be recogniced as such, use HTML format
when composing your message and, although by default WLM converts links
automatically, you can be even more sure if you manually use the option for
inserting an hyperlink, which in WLM I don't remember if it can be done by
pressing CTRL+K as in Outlook or if it's necessary to select the text first and
then choosing an item in the Insert tab, similar to the procedure in Outlook
Express. But be aware that this won't work if the recipient configured their
e-mail client (or if it was automatically configured so by an antivirus) to
read all messages as plain text.

Hope it helps!

Re: [JAWS-Users] task bar

2018-03-25 Thread Fernando Gregoire
Hi Justin,

There are two factors that can be related to the apps listed when you press
ALT+TAB.
First, in the Taskbar settings that you can quickly open by pressing ALT+ENTER
on the Start button, there's a combo box on wetter taskbar buttons are combined
or not. This setting was previously available on the Taskbar and Start Menu
Properties dialog box.

Regarding taskbar-related keyboard shortcuts with the Windows Logo key,
WINDOWS+TAB was used in Windows XP and earlier versions to set the focus on the
first and subsequently the next item of the taskbar. In Windows Vista and 7
this shortcuts stopped working, unless you had Windows Aero enabled. The
original hotkey, in Windows Vista and later, was changed by WINDOWS+T.

Re: [JAWS-Users] jaws and edge.

2018-03-25 Thread Fernando Gregoire
Hi Michael,

JAWS 18 latest updates and any version of JAWS 2018 have Edge support, so many
virtual cursor features work similarly to the way they do in other browsers.
This include the fact that you need to turn Forms Mode on by pressing ENTER to
interact with controls like edit boxes such as a Password field.
If you are aware of this and your problem was that JAWS never stopped using
virtual cursor even when you were already outside the Edge content area, this
is a problem that you should to report. Until this is fixed by Freedom
Scientific, if this issue occurs again, you can disable JAWS Edge support in
the Settings Center.

Hope it helps!

Re: [JAWS-Users] Say All pausing between lines

2018-03-24 Thread Fernando Gregoire
I'm not exactly getting Say All paused when I set it to Lines Without Pauses,
but I'm having a similar issue since JAWS 18.
In both Castilian and Latin American Spanish, Eloquence default thousand
separator is the period instead of the comma. Even when Eloquence read whole
numbers with thousands groups correctly, when I use Say All the period is
handled like a sentence ending period, that is, when using Say All Eloquence
speak the whole number before the period, makes a short pause like after a
sentence and then speak the rest as it if were another number.

Subject: [JAWS-Users] Say All pausing between lines

Hi all. I'm using the latest builds of both Jaws 2018 and Windows 10.
Seemingly inexplicably, Say All has begun pausing between lines, even though I
have tried it both reading by sentence and by line without pauses. It's almost
as though whichever setting I choose, Say All reads with pauses.
To attempt to remedy this, I performed a repair, then tried Say All using the
alternate user directory; it read without pauses as I desire. I then deleted
all my settings files except for my pronunciation dictionary and voice
profiles, to allow Jaws to repopulate my settings directory. AftEr this, Say
All again read without pauses as I desire. However, after I went through the
entire settings tree, resetting everything to my preferences, the Say All
reading with pauses regardless of setting returned.
This forces me to ask if there is some hidden or obscure relationship between
how Say All pauses and another setting that appears to have nothing to do with
it. I'm inclined toward this reasoning because when I switch to the alternate
user directory or delete my settings files, Say All behaves properly. Only
after I configure my settings does the problem return. The question is: why?
I realize that as a temporary fix, I could yet again delete my settings and
this time not change any of the defaults. But then, punctuation, speech
verbosity and so many other settings would not be configured to my taste. As
another possibility, I will test tomorrow whether this behavior is also
happening on my laptop. If it is not, I'll try copying my settings directory
from my laptop to the problematic desktop.
What do you all think? Has anyone ever experienced this strange Say All
behavior of reading with line pauses regardless of setting?

Many thanks,

Orlando Enrique Fiol

VFO was created through Vector's simultaneous acquisition of Freedom Scientific

Together, the combined company offers an expanded product line-up, enhanced

expand both organically and inorganically.

[JAWS-Users] what is VFO?

2018-03-22 Thread Fernando Gregoire
Hi all,

I ultimately are seeing many of you referring to VFO instead of Freedom
Scientific when requiring JAWS technical support.

Since international customers have to buy or get support through dealers or in
some cases governmental agencies, I'm not very aware on what is exactly VFO. Is
it an enterprise to which Freedom Scientific sold its trademarks including
JAWS? Is it a Freedom Scientific subsidiary to serve some specific area in the
United States? Will software references to Freedom Scientific be replaced with
VFO ones in the future?

Current Freedom Scientific website bottom simply tells “Part of VFO,” and VFO's
website have no much information.

Thanks in advance!

Re: [JAWS-Users] Tandem Questions

2018-03-22 Thread Fernando Gregoire
Hi Denis,

JAWS 16 and later doesn't support Windows XP. I copy you information on release
notes for JAWS 16 pertaining this.

JAWS 16 Discontinues Support of Windows XP

Microsoft discontinued support for the Windows XP operating system in April of
2014, 13 plus years after its initial release. Based on this decision, we
have decided to discontinue the on-going development and testing for Windows XP
as of JAWS 16. Starting with the initial release of JAWS 16, it will only
install on computers running Windows Vista or higher. For all of our customers
who may continue to maintain a Windows XP computer, you can download the
current JAWS 15 release, along with earlier versions of JAWS, from our archive
download pages on the Freedom Scientific web site. These earlier versions
will remain available for our customers in the future as well.

You can find these notes here:
http://www.freedomscientific.com/Downloads/jaws/jaws16features

I also remember that briefly after the release of JAWS 16, FS posted an update
to JAWS 15, the final one specifically worrying about Windows XP, to fix broken
JAWS support for Outlook Express. I'm now checking FS website and this is the
relevant information about this on JAWS 15:

Enhancements in JAWS 15.0.11024 (August 2014)

This new update addresses the following two issues reported by multiple
customers shortly after JAWS 15.0.11022 was posted.

• Resolved issues with Internet Explorer 8 and Outlook Express not working
under Windows XP.
• Resolved reported issues where the updated Accessibility Driver would not
install in Windows 8. It was working as expected in Windows 8.1.

These release notes are here:
http://www.freedomscientific.com/Downloads/jaws/jaws15features

Cheers!

Hi Holger,

You might need to make Winamp to re-associate the files. Open Winamp
Preferences dialog with CTRL+P, go to the File Types leaf in the tree view,
press the button to select all file tipes and then the Close button or ESCAPE
key.
A UAC dialog asking for Winamp elevation should appear, press ALT+Y for Yes.
Once it is done, press WINDOWS+I to open the new Settings Apps, go to and press
ENTER on Apps and Features, then do the same with the subcategory Default Apps.
In this subcategory, you will find buttons with the default program for
different things. Find the one for Video Player, press it with SPACEBAR and
Winamp should appear here to be picked.

Re: [JAWS-Users] User Account Control Settings, Setting it to Zero

2018-03-21 Thread Fernando Gregoire
Hi Mike,

Note that in Windows 8 and 10, unlike in Windows 7, when you set UAC to 0% you
stop the dialog from appearing but, instead of disabling UAC to run everything
as administrator by default as in Windows XP and prior versions, the UAC will
automatically deny these permisions for programs trying to write, delete or
modify something in a folder requiring administrator privileges different to
the one in which the executable is stored.
You can use scripts or group policies to disable UAC in Windows 10, but some
things like some UWP apps and special shell extensions will not work properly,
for a reason I don't know why.
However, when you make changes in the UAC slider and press the OK button, a UAC
confirmation will appear in a secure desktop, therefore JAWS will take a few
seconds before speaking, and it could speak nothing if you have your current
JAWS version disabled in the Ease of Access Center. When this dialog appear,
simply answer the confirmation as any other UAC dialog.
Although is less safe, you can also configure UAC to display confirmations in a
window on your user's desktop instead of a secure one, so you don't need to
wait until JAWS switches its response to the secure desktop.

Hope it helps a bit!

Re: [JAWS-Users] Unmute key combo

2018-03-17 Thread Fernando Gregoire
I respect your opinion, Maria, but unmuting as it was implemented seems me a
bad idea.
In addition to when starting JAWS (which is right), this is done every time you
press JAWS+ESCAPE to refresh the screen or virtual buffer. Freedom Scientific
says that this doesn't affect muting of the synthesizer with INSERT+SPACEBAR,
S, but what if you only use Braille and, even when you work with no speech or
have speech muted temporarily, you want to mute also other computer sounds? I
think it would be better if this would be a setting in the Basic Settings
dialog box and JAWS Startup Wizard instead of a mandatory action from witting
any call to the RefreshScreen script.
These imposed automatic adjustments makes me a bit angry, for example the fact
that I can't lower the JAWS volume in Volume Mixer less than 20% because it is
reset automatically to 100% when I try to continue down to 19, 18 or the value
I want.

Re: [JAWS-Users] turning off sounds in word, outlook etc.

2018-03-16 Thread Fernando Gregoire
Hi,

Both Mike and Cristóbal suggestions are right.
In the nearby past, the Provide Feedback with Sound settings was available in
Advanced Options (General tab in Office 2003 and earlier) and required an
add-in to work, which is freely available from the Microsoft Download Center.
In this old way of implementing sounds in Office programs, the add-in creates a
sub-folder in the Media folder containing various Office sounds and adds a
Microsoft Office branch to the System Sound Events in the Sounds tab of the
Sound dialog in Control Panel. By the way, you can mute individual sounds or
change them with any wav file you want.

In a not too far in time update to Office 2016, Microsoft made some significant
changes to this approach used since Office 97.
Concerning the checkbox location, they moved it to a new Options category named
Ease of Access, together with some other settings like Provide Feedback with
Animations. Now there's no need to download and install the add-in.
Other change, and the more significant one, is related to the sound
assignments. While the old add-in allowed you to change individual sounds in
Control Panel, the new implementation doesn't add anything there. Instead,
there is now a combo box next to the Provide Feedback with Sound checkbox when
it is checked, in which you can choose between Classic (which is the old Office
default sound scheme, as the name says) or Modern. In general, sounds of the
Modern scheme are quieter than the older ones. I feel more comfortable with the
Classic scheme.

In a few words, both Mike and Cristóbal answers are correct. Exact location of
the Provide Feedback with Sound checkbox and possibility to mute individual
sounds will depend on how up to date is your Office 2016 installation; Office
97 through 2013 will always use the old add-in based implementation, with
checkbox on General tab or Advanced category and allowing to change or mute
individual sounds through Control Panel.

Hope it helps!

Hi,

I'm using office 2016, windows 10 pro and jaws 18.

Every time I delete text it makes a sound, I thought to turn that off it was in
the word options under advance. However, I just came from there and I do not
see it.

There are other sounds being made depending on the action, but I just used the
delete for an example of what I'd like to do.

These sounds occur in any office application, not one specific. I mentioned
word earlier, since that is where I found it, to turn it off that is.

To get out of a text/form field, press the PC cursor key. Then press b to reach
the next button, which will probably be "submit."
I realize you're using a laptop and probably so the JAWS laptop keyboard. I
don't know what the PC cursor key is in that case. On the desktop keyboard,
it's that long one on the right side of the numpad.

Re: [JAWS-Users] Jaws and conversations

2018-03-10 Thread Fernando Gregoire
Hi Teresa,

Congratulations for your new job.
If your only concern is other people listening your JAWS via Skype or other
VoIP programs, nobody via these programs will hear your JAWS if you are hearing
it from the headsets.
If your particular headsets are recognized in Windows as another sound cards
which is not set as the default one, you can send JAWS output to the headsets
by going to the JAWS menu or window (INSERT+J), Utilities, Sound Cards and
there selecting the item corresponding to the headsets.

Hope it helps!

Re: [JAWS-Users] searching for coloured text in Microsoft Word

2018-02-27 Thread Fernando Gregoire
Hi Geoff,

In versions prior to 2010 this was done by pressing CTRL+F.
In Word 2010 and latter CTRL+F opens the Navigation Pane which only offer a
basic searching capability, so you have to use the Advanced Search item located
on the Edit group of the Home tab in the ribbon to get to the old dialog. If
you need this frequently, you may find useful to add this to the Quick Access
Toolbar or create keyboard shortcuts, either an additional one for Advanced
Search or by editing CTRL+F to activate Advanced Search instead of the
Navigation Pane.

Hope it helps!

Re: [JAWS-Users] Office 2010 vs. 2016 vs. 365

2018-02-27 Thread Fernando Gregoire
Hi Reveca,

I use Office 2016 on all of my computers.
Ultimately Microsoft is making a lot of accessibility improvements and even
step-by-step tutorials on how to accomplish specific tasks by using a screen
reader that are based in Office 2016 programs running together with JAWS or the
Windows 10 Narrator.
Besides accessibility, it only makes sense to upgrade to Office 2016 if you
often work with files stored in cloud services like OneDrive and/or need to
edit or copy data from PDF files to Word documents and, although it is less
common from witting Word, if you use Word to read books, because Office 2013
introduced the capability to resume reading from where you left.
I personally found upgrading useful, because the support for saving files to
OneDrive from witting Office programs and have recently used documents
synchronized is drastically enhanced over the limited and unstable support
available for this in Office 2010.
If you use Outlook as your e-mail client, it is easier to attach recently used
files of any type without having to search in the folder structure, since
Outlook 2016 by defaults shows a list of the last files used, which in Windows
10 is consistent with the Quick Access folder in File Explorer.

Of course there are more specific things you may find useful or not depending
on programs you use and the purposes you use these for, but I think the ones I
mentioned are the most notable additions regarding daily use for a home user.

Not that we're speaking about Office 2016, how well does the new Word feature
that provides writing suggestions besides traditional spelling and grammar that
was introduced some time ago in Office 365 works? It is not available for
Spanish yet and I'm not a native English speaker, so I can't accurately judge
suggestions quality myself.

Hope it helps!

Re: [JAWS-Users] Office 2010 vs. 2016 vs. 365

2018-02-27 Thread Fernando Gregoire
Hi Adrian,

What is JAWS saying when you press INSERT+C when checking for spelling errors?
I have Office 2016 in two different Windows 10 machines and, even when spell
checker in Word is now a task pane instead of a dialog, command for
ReadWordInContext works fine. Moreover, compared to prior versions, in case of
grammatical errors JAWS displays the explanation and examples in the Virtual
Viewer, making it easier to review this information which in the past required
to open an additional help-style window or have the Office Assistant loaded.
Regarding not being able to go to the folder three view in Outlook, SHIFT+F6
still works the same as in prior versions. I used to it quickly, because since
Office 2007 it is not rare to use F6 in order to focus the status bar.

Hi, Rebecca. I've been using Office 2016 for only two weeks. So far, I find no
advantages over 2010. I have been meaning to try out certain features. For
example, I believe 2016 handles PDF files, but I haven't looked into it so far.
After all, PDF files have become increasingly accessible, especially with JAWS
2018. Otherwise, 2016 doesn't act as smoothly for me as 2010 did.

for example, often when I press the down arrow key, all I hear is the first
letter of that next line rather than the whole line. All I need do is go back
up and back down again, but it's an extra step and a distraction.

In spell-check, "word in context" is no longer available. It's easy enough to
escape out of spell-check and do a "say line" command, but I do miss that
option.

In Outlook 2016, you need to press control-y to go to the folders list.
Shift-tab no longer works. Of course, this is just a question of forming a new
habit, and you may already use control-y as your default.

Outlook 2016 takes a long time to open. I do have a lot of folders and
messages, but it seems to take much longer than it did in 2010.

There's a trick to setting up Word 2016 so that you can open files from your
chosen directory. I would gladly check my notes to explain if the time came.

One last curiosity. When I do a search-and-replace in Word 2016, I'm told: "All
done. We made X replacements." Who is "we"? Microsoft? Of course, it isn't
literally MS looking over my shoulder, just a way they've chosen to confirm an
operation, but it's a little creepy.

So far the only reason I can see for upgrading to 2016 is to keep up with
technological changes. I had hoped it would overcome certain unrelated problems
I've been having, such as with Windows updates, but those problems turn out to
be exactly what I said: unrelated. Well, if you do a lot of work on documents
with other people, it looks like 2016 has some useful features.

Re: [JAWS-Users] Making a keyboard shortcut for restarting JAWS

2018-02-24 Thread Fernando Gregoire
Hi Matthew,

As other told you, JAWS keystroke to restart it in case of a crash in which
JAWS processes are still loaded is JAWS+WINDOWS+F4.
However, I suspect that your problem may be related to the audio playback
device.
You said that you connect a radio station or similar when JAWS speech feedback
goes out, so I suggest to check in the Utilities menu of JAWS's window
(INSERT+J, then ALT+U) which sound card is selected in the Sound Cards sub menu
to route JAWS speech output.
As an example, I have an old micro-component which can be connected via USB to
get computer audio there. The problem is that most recent drivers available are
not fully compatible in Windows versions newer than XP and not supported at all
on any 64-bit Windows version. Since I have to simulate a driver update from
witting Device manager each time I connect the micro-component because generic
USB Composite Device as installed by Windows doesn't work with it but even so
the main audio controller appears to be working properly, I had to configure
JAWS to always send speech output to the computer's built-in speakers
regardless of the Windows default playback device set in Sounds Control Panel
applet. If I don't configure JAWS in this way, I lost speech until I manage to
simulate the driver update, configure JAWS to send the output to the computer's
built-in speaker or unplug the micro-component.

Hope it helps!

Re: [JAWS-Users] returning to Jaws version 16

2018-02-22 Thread Fernando Gregoire
There should be no issues, unless you have customized the default script file
in JAWS 2018 or changed the symbols file for Eloquence and you want to copy
these customizations from JAWS 2018 to 16. This is because the default script
file is not compatible between versions if you have directly modified it, and
regarding punctuation/symbols spoken by Eloquence JAWS 17 started to use
hexadecimal language codes instead of internal Eloquence language names (e.g.
0x409 instead of American English), so punctuation customizations won't be
detected by JAWS 16 if you don't replace language codes by internal names
manually using Notepad or any other text editor.
The other customizations can usually be copied to a previous version with no
problem.

Hope it helps!

Re: [JAWS-Users] Researcher

2018-02-15 Thread Fernando Gregoire
Hi Holger,

I understand your problem. For some reason, you're getting stuck after you
press ENTER on the dialog to type the phrase to search and/or choose a module.
To see if you are having a problem with Results Viewer infrastructure besides
Internet access to the different services, I suggest you to open the Speech
History by pressing INSERT+SPACEBAR and the letter h. If this feature doesn't
work, you are having a problem related to Internet Explorer, because Results
Viewer uses IE components in the background. If this works fine, your problem
is related to a firewall (or other security tool, either hardware or software)
that's preventing JAWS from making outcoming connections to the Internet.
Checking this will allow us to give specific procedures.

Hope it clarifies something.

Even when the way of some replies perhaps was unfortunate, your lack of

One time I uninstalled Internet Explorer and I was unable to use this feature

Re: [JAWS-Users] Differences between Chrome and Google Chrome with JAWS

2018-02-15 Thread Fernando Gregoire
Hi Cher,

Google Chrome is the browser you download from Google's website and many
programs offer during installation, wetter you are an individual or an
enterprise.
In the JAWS Chrome script files there is the difference between Chrome and
Google Chrome, because Chrome is a generic way to refer to other browsers that
use the open source Chromium engine used by Google Chrome, for example the
modern versions of Opera.

Hope this clarification is helpful.

It looks like Google Chrome is for Enterprise use- is this correct? I did not
know there was any difference and downloaded GC rather than just Chrome.
Is Chrome simpler and/or is one more compatible with JAWS? Thanks.

Hi Holger,

Even when the way of some replies perhaps was unfortunate, your lack of
explanation does not allow us to give an useful response.
One time I uninstalled Internet Explorer and I was unable to use this feature
at all because the Results Viewer depended on IE, but this issue is not similar

Re: [JAWS-Users] Opening multiple attachments in MS Word

2018-02-14 Thread Fernando Gregoire
Hi Wayne,

I assume you're using Outlook as your e-mail client.
If so, you can't open many attachments at the same time, but you can save all
or many of them simultaneously. To do this, press ALT+F to go to the Office
button or the File menu, depending on if you are in the main window or the
message one. In the menu, go to Save Attachments option.
In the dialog which opens, you can select the files you want to save and
specify the folder where you want to save them.
Once the files are saved, you can open the folder either from Windows Explorer
or Word's Open dialog and select the files to open simultaneously.

Hope it helps!

Re: [JAWS-Users] Using a web site provided text formatter.

2018-02-14 Thread Fernando Gregoire
Hi Adrian,

Yes, I assume that Judy selected the desired text before trying to make it a
link.
Regarding CTRL+Z, it is probably a typo, since CTRL+Z is for Undo.
Trying Pass Key Through (JAWS+3) is a good idea. Since she's using IE, she
should press this JAWS command, then ALT+L, then this JAWS command again and
finally ENTER.
Additionally, Judy could also try changing, at least temporarily, the Link
Activation option in Quick Settings. This option defines wetter JAWS simulates
a left mouse click on the link or a pressing of the ENTER key on it; by default
JAWS simulates a left mouse click, but FS recommends testing the other
alternative in case the user has problems activating links in a website.
If this solves the problem, Judy could change this in the Personalized Web
Settings branch, specifically for the problematic website.

Some thoughts:

First, Fernando, shouldn't Judy select the text and only then press control-z
to turn off the virtual cursor, then alt-l or shift-alt-l?

How about pressing the JAWS pass-through key, JAWS key+3 on the number row
above the letters, before pressing either alt-l or shift-alt-l?

I used to experience this same problem with WordPress. In that case, Jonathan
Mosen suggested trying shift-alt-a. that key combination is probably specific
to WordPress, but maybe not.

WordPress solved this problem in the past year or so by enabling just about all
formatting in Word, including links, to carry through to the WordPress website.
Judy, you might ask this website's people if they're working on a similar
solution.

Hi Judy,

The keystrokes starting with alt in web pages may require you also press SHIFT.
For example, a link which has access key b is activated in IE by pressing ALT+B

ALT+SHIFT+L to see if that works.

Subject: [JAWS-Users] Using a web site provided text formatter.

Hello again,

I am a new author with www.textbroker.com.

I have successfully submitted material, but have some beginner-type questions.

When submitting the text of the article, there is a text box for the body of
the article. All well and good.

When composing the original document in Word, after copy-pasting that Word doc
with all its attributes, such as bold, italics, hyperlinks, etc. those
attributes do not transfer over in to the site's text field.

To solve this, the site has provided links for adding those attributes back in
above the text box/edit field for the text body. However, I am unable to get
those to work, don't know how to access them without getting out of the text
field.

For instance, when wanting to attach a hyperlink to the words Outdoor Fun,
doing the traditional control-K in Word actually opens a new Textbroker page.

However, I am asking if there is a way to actually use the link for hyperlink
provided by Textbroker. You are supposed to be able to highlight your text,
then go up to the link to activate the hyperlink in the document, but does not
work, since I am out of the edit field. The formatter link even gives ashort
cut key of Alt-L, which I have tried, but does not work either. Note that the
control-B does work for Bold, and I believe the control-U key will work too.

If this problem is too confusing, let me know and will try to rephrase.

Thanks as always.

Judy

Re: [JAWS-Users] how do I attach a document to an email in Outlook 2016

2018-02-13 Thread Fernando Gregoire
Another method to attach files witting File Explorer, although it only works in
Windows 8 or latter, is to add the E-mail button of the Share tab to the Quick
Access Toolbar.
This toolbar comes by default with some commands like Properties and Delete,
but since you can access them with keyboard shortcuts non-dependant of this
toolbar, I removed them from there and I added two commands: the Copy As Path
option and the E-mail button. By the way, after I select the file(s) I want to
attach, I can press ALT+2 to quickly open a new message with the file(s)
attached.
Of course, for this to work, Outlook must be set as your default e-mail program.

Hi Mariam,

There are many ways to attach a file to an e-mail message. Here is one of my
favorite methods.

Open Windows Explorer with Windows Key+e.

Navigate to the file you want to attach. If you want to attach multiple files
from the same folder, navigate to the first file, hold down the Control key,
press the down arrow until you get to the next file you want and then press the
Space bar while still holding down the Control key.
Continue holding down the control key and using the down arrow and Space bar
until all files are selected.

Use the copy command Control+c.

Go to your outlook Inbox. Do not open any files.
Use the Control+v paste command.

Like magic a new message will open, the file(s) will be attached and you should
be in the To field.

HTH,
Annette

Thanks for the info. I didn't know that ALT+T worked in English.

Hi Brian,

Unless you need to make additional adjustments like an infotip or the target
frame, using JAWS Cursor is not needed. This is because the Text to Display
edit box have an access key, which at least in Spanish is ALT+X; so you can
type in or paste the URL, press ALT+X (or whichever keystroke used in English),
type in the text to display, SHIFT+TAB twice to the OK button and press ENTER.

Hope you find it helpful!

Hello Judy,

If you are inserting a link to a web page, I have found it better to use the
JAWS cursor in the Insert Hyperlink dialog box. Here are the steps you might
want to try:

In the Word document where you want the words that people see, start by using
CTRL with K.
Type in the web address for the link's destination.
I suggest that you don't tab through the dialog box using the PC cursor as
things can get messed up.
After typing in the web address route JAWS to PC.
With JAWS cursor active do a page up.
Arrow down once to the line with "link to" and "text to display.
Press home key and then use JAWS key with right arrow key until you find the
address just past the words "text to display."
Simulate a left mouse button click to bring focus there.
Put on PC cursor, select the text in the field and overwrite the text with the
words you want used.
Route JAWS to PC again, do a page down and find the OK button.
Do a simulated left mouse button click on the OK button.

You should be able to test it. If your document is saved move on to the line
with the link, use application key and choose to open hyperlink.

Take care.

We have all seen the phrase, "Click here for more information."

How do I link a web site to the word Here, in that phrase, or, another example,
a link to the phrase, Leave A Reply, linking that phrase to a site where one
can leave a reply?

Thanks.

Judy
