Re: [JAWS-Users] Creating a new folder
I have the latest version of windows 10, 1803. When you first open your Documents folder, nothing should be selected. JAWS should say, not selected before it says the name of the first folder. You have several choices as to how you create a new folder. 1. Press control-shift-n and JAWS should say new folder. You're in the edit box to type the folder's name. Type it and press enter. 2. Press the application key and arrow to new, submenu. Press enter to open the menu. You should be on folder. Press enter and type the new name. Press enter.. 3. Press the alt key and tab once. It should say, properties. Tab again and it should say, new folder button. Press enter. If you want an even quicker way, from Documents, with nothing selected, press alt and the 2 on the top row of the keyboard. Together, not sequentially. Smile. This will put you in the edit box, ready to type the folder name. HTH. Re: [JAWS-Users] Just For Fun, Emoji
Thank you, Joseph. Pressing enter works! Smile. I put one in a document and then later wasn't sure what I'd done before. It said the emoji was selected, so I pressed control c to copy it, then control v to paste. Works everywhere else in Microsoft! LOL. Not here. JAWS reads the smiling face with smiling eyes emoji, but not several others that I added, the eagle or butterfly. I know they were there since Narrator read them. -Original Message- From: JAWS-Users-List [mailto:jaws-users-list-boun...@jaws-users.com] On Behalf Of joseph.lee22...@gmail.com Sent: Thursday, June 21, 2018 10:22 PM To: jaws-users-list@jaws-users.com Subject: Re: [JAWS-Users] Just For Fun, Emoji Hi, I'll try my best to address several questions about emoji panel in one go: Q. What is emoji? Emoji (a shorthand Japanese for "emotion characters", from Romanization of "emo" and "ji" (character)) is a picture that represents objects, emotions, people, events and so on. This came about in the late 1990's where people wanted to conserve space on data usage yet wanted to express their emotions to the fullest. This became pop0ular among Japanese mobile phone users via SMS (short messaging service) before it gain widespread usage in 2010's. Q. How do I read emoji? It'll depend on screen reader and synthesizer in use. Some synthesizers do support announcing emojis, while others don't. Also, the ability to recognize emojis will depend on how the screen reader processes Unicode data and instructions sent to speech synthesizers regarding how to process such characters. Q. How do I input emoji? In Windows 10 Version 1709 (Fall Creators Update) and later, you can browse and insert emoji by pressing Windows+period or Windows+semicolon. Note that in 1709 and 1803 (April 2018 Update), only United States English keyboard layout will let you browse emojis. In Redstone 5 (under development), this restriction is gone. In 1709 and 1803, once emoji panel opens, press the arrow keys to move through emojis. Press Tab to cycle through emoji categories, or if you're looking for a specific emoji, type the name and the panel will return suggestions. To insert a given emoji, press Enter. In Redstone 5, you can still use arrow keys to move through emojis. However, pressing Tab will not cycle through categories; rather, it'll switch between emojis and categories. To select a different emoji category, press Tab to go the categories, then use left or right arrows to move through categories and press Enter. In case of People category, you can choose a skin tone. Once the emoji is found, press Enter. Q. Does JAWS support emoji panel? Not at this time (according to tests). Some users asked VFO regarding this matter not long ago. Q. Does other screen readers support emoji panel? Write to me privately regarding this matter please (not only to keep the topic on scope, but also because I am the one who brought support for emoji panel for a certain screen reader; hint: there will come a day when a certain scripts will not be required to interact with emoji panel, but that's for another time). Re: [JAWS-Users] Just For Fun, Emoji
Narrator reads the lists of emoji. There are several categories, which you can get to by tabbing. JAWS won't read the lists, but it will read the emoji once it's pasted into a message or document. However, I've tried several times to copy and paste another, but it won't copy. The context key says that copy is disabled and control c won't work as it did before. A bug in Microsoft? Smile. But there are hundreds of emoji in the various categories. Fun to play with if I can get it to work. Accented vowel, º, ñ for example. ☺ = alt plus #1. ☻ = alt plus #2. ♥ = alt plus #3 and so on. But considering that there are tons and tons of emojis and that you can also select shade of skin color for the more ethno-centric conscious folks, it's still pretty much a no go. [JAWS-Users] A Question About Level And Position
I've asked about this before, but my frustration and confusion continue. In the JAWS settings, there's a check box that says: Show level and position. It's checked, by default, it says. However, the results are variable in the folder and file lists in Documents. I have Windows 10, 1803, and the latest version of JAWS. Yesterday in Documents, using insert-tab, JAWS said that a folder was 3 of 48, which is precisely what it should say. The status line said there were 48 folders, and my curser was on the third one down. Today, it's gone back to saying 3 of 29, and for the last folder, it says, 32 of 32. My screen is maximized. I tried restoring it, and nothing changed. But the inconsistency baffles me. Window-Eyes consistently reports the correct position, and JAWS is set to do so. Is this a bug that could be fixed? Smile. You're correct. However, and I should have clarified this, if you search from the start menu search box, you're given no information about the results by date, type, size and path. If you right arrow, there's silence. I'm a details freak, LOL, and I want this information. JMO. Re: [JAWS-Users] Find Function in MS Word 13
Well, LOL, I can certainly empathize. I was playing with the find command in my Word 2010, finding partial words and reacquainting myself about how to find formatting. Sometimes it worked beautifully, just as Adrian said. And then, for no reason known to a mere mortal, as opposed to the more highly evolved computer being on this desk, the find could not be found. Gone. And sometimes, it found 18 paragraph marks when I'd only put in five. Maybe it was trying to apologize for earlier disappearances. Dave and Rebecca have posted the JAWS alternative that works fine in most instances. However, the MS find function can be helpful in other ways, so I'd like to try to suggest what may be going wrong for you. With JAWS find (JAWS key+control+f), you can only search for whole words. So if you remembered the word you wanted was a verb such as "talk," but not whether it was talked, talking, etc., you'd have to search over and over until you landed on the place you were searching for. MS find isn't limited to words; you can also search for partial words, etc. Another nice feature of the MS search function is that it will tell you how many instances of your search string appear in the document, and also which one you're focused on. JAWS find does none of that. Finally, with MS find you can search for paragraph breaks, tabs and other useful targets. Again, you can't do any of this with JAWS find. In my experience, the first time I open an MS find, nothing happens. I press control-f, type in my search string, then press enter. Nothing. However, I then press control-f again and JAWS verbalizes the search string I just typed. Now I press enter, and I'm taken to the first instance of that string. Here, take care to listen on pressing that enter key. You will be given the context, such as the entire line where the result appears. You'll also be told to click on "Next" for the next instance. If you've arrived where you want to be, press escape to exit the find function. If you're looking for a different instance, press the spacebar. If you move on to the next instance, you're now told the number of examples of this string in the document and which of those instances you're focused on, as well as the current context. The MS find function isn't completely consistent. For example, sometimes it commences a search the first time I do the find command, sometimes not. It took me some getting used to, and like Rebecca and Dave, I most often use JAWS find. but learning how to work with MS find was well worth the trouble. -Original Message- From: JAWS-Users-List On Behalf Of jyandt.mar...@comcast.net Sent: Tuesday, May 29, 2018 11:53 AM To: jaws-users-list@jaws-users.com Subject: [JAWS-Users] Find Function in MS Word 13 Morning all. I copied the quote from a Microsoft page that had nothing to do with JAWS. The sighted person said the text message did not appear at all.--" There is just a quick blink on the Taskbar". I have all icons set to display in the system tray. The safely remove hardware and eject media is always there, whether I have a drive inserted or not. When the removal process is completed the Safely Remove icon disappears from the system tray unless you have more than 1 external drive running which I'm prone to do. But, let's say you have 3 external drives running and their drive letters are L, M, & N. You want to remove drive M, you open the Safely Remove from the system tray, choose driveM, and press enter. Now, Jaws doesn't report the drive is safe to remove, but if you look in, Computer, driveM won't be showing which means it's safe to remove. If you're only running 1 external drive, after you choose it from the Safely Remove icon, and Jaws doesn't report it to be safe to remove, look in, Computer, and if you don't see it in the drive list it's safe to remove. Yes, smile, but the brain, my brain, seems to remember "p" for proofreading, more easily than "c" for classic attributes and font info. Whatever works! LOL. In previous versions of Word, superscript would be verbalized when I moved character by character. also, when I typed a number such as 14th, Word would automatically make the "th" superscript. Neither is happening with Word 2016 and the current release of JAWS 2018. Even more disconcerting, a sighted assistant tells me that sometimes the "th" or "nd" is superscript, sometimes not, probably because I'm working in a document created in an earlier version of Word. Can anyone suggest how: 1. To get Word to make "th" and "nd" in numbers like 14th and 2nd automatically appear as superscript? 2. To get JAWS to report superscript, and also subscript, in Word documents? I looked at the intermediate settings for anything that might help, but nothing leapt out. Note: Superscript is handled fine in Outlook 2016, which I have tethered to Word 2016. Thanks. They're for 1803 so I doubt Bard has them. You could download them from Bookshare as MP3 audio and play them on the NLS player. I got them as epub books and used Edge to open and read them. [JAWS-Users] A Comment About Control-y In Outlook
Control-y brings up a complete folder list. I never miss calendar and contacts when using the shift-tab method because I use control-2 for Calendar and control-3 for Contacts. Control-6 brings up the complete folder list with Suggested Contacts if you don't remember control-y. Smile. The suggested contacts is useful on occasion. I go in there every so often and clean out the scads of contacts Outlook has automatically added that I know I will never use. If you're in Calendar or Contacts, control-1 will bring you back to your in-box. Re: [JAWS-Users] Outlook
Hello David, I'm using Outlook 2010, and this does work, with the comment that the first press of "C" Brought me to calendar. I could press "C" again, or arrow down once to get to contacts. You taught me something I did not know. I like to keep a list of all my email contacts in both a Word and WordPad document as a backup. I've always gone to contacts with Control-3 After copying an email address to add, and then pressed Control-n To add a new contact. Your way would be quicker if I had an email message handy, smile, though I would always add the address to my Word and WordPad docs too. I also forget about the Control-y To bring up the folder list, since my hands automatically press Shift-tab to get to the folder list. As usual, ways and ways... You have to be logged in or you can't get to that Account Options, as the Amazon Disability person referred to it, or to the Payment Options link. Even when I was logged in on the main page, I was asked to log in again when I pressed enter on the Your Account Link. It needs to know who we are to know what account info to access. Smile. We used to have three site options for Amazon: The main site, a really simplified site and one in-between. On this middle one, there was a link at the bottom to let you return to the main site. Those choices seem to have been taken away now. I think it's patronizing to automatically be sent to a site for screen readers, if that's what's happening. There are those who prefer the supposedly more accessible sites, but others not. And we as users should be in control of which to use. Smile. Also, if you go back in and press enter again on name, or on date, the order will reverse. This is a quick way to change something on the fly, especially if you want it sorted by date, and you are looking for something either very recent or very old. If you want something in ascending order, make sure that item is checked, which I think it is by default. As usual, Microsoft has given us multiple ways to do the same thing. I find the function key quicker, but the context menu key works great too. Press the applications key, between the right-hand Windows and control keys. 3. Arrow down to "Sort by..." Press enter. 4. On my system, the first item that comes up is "Name." If this isn't checked, press the spacebar. Now, if that doesn't solve the problem, repeat steps 1 through 3 again and press enter on "sort by." Now arrow down to "Ascending." Re: [JAWS-Users] task bar
Hm. I just googled and google said: Windows 7 keyboard shortcut keys General keyboard shortcuts Alt+Tab Switch between open items Ctrl+Alt+Tab Use the arrow keys to switch between open items Windows logo key +Tab Cycle through programs on the taskbar by using Aero Flip 3-D As I said, it's been several years now since I've used Windows 7, so I googled again and found: HOW TO USE FLIP AND FLIP 3D IN WINDOWS 7 When you have many windows open in Windows 7, you can use the Flip and Flip 3-D features to quickly organize your applications. Flip and Flip 3-D, like Aero Peek, allow you to view what is happening in all of your open windows and shuffle them so that the one you want is on top. FLIP To use the Flip feature, hold down Alt and press Tab. Windows 7 displays a panel in the middle of the desktop showing thumbnails of each open window. Each time you press Tab, a different one of the windows is selected and its name appears at the top of the panel. When you release the Alt key, the panel hides again and the last window selected becomes the open window on your display. If you want to take your time scrolling through the open windows, hold the Ctrl key down while you press the Alt and Tab key. The thumbnail panel will open and stay that way even after you release all the keys. This allows you to use the right and left arrow keys to find the one you want. When youve highlighted the window you want to work with, press Enter to close the panel and display the selected window on the desktop. FLIP 3D To use the Flip 3D feature, hold down the Windows logo key (the key with picture of a waving flag divided into four parts) and then press the Tab key. All the open windows will cascade across your desktop in 3-D. Flip through the cascading thumbnails by continuing to press the Tab key. When the thumbnail of the window you want appears at the front of the stack, release the Windows logo key. Your windows will all lay back down with the window you want on top. As with Flip, holding the Ctrl key down while activating Flip 3D ensures that the windows remain cascaded across your desktop while you peruse them with your right and left arrow keys. When the window you want to access is at the front of the stack, you can press Enter to close the stack and display its window on top of the desktop. http://www.dummies.com/computers/operating-systems/windows-7/how-to-use-flip -and-flip-3d-in-windows-7/ HTH. -Original Message- From: JAWS-Users-List [mailto:jaws-users-list-boun...@jaws-users.com] On Behalf Of Mike B. [JAWS-Users] Reading Epub Books
As a Follow-up to my previous post in which I said that neither my Kurzweil nor FS Reader would open the DAISY version of very long books I'd downloaded from Bookshare, I brought in the book as an epub book. Kurzweil would not open this either, but because I'm running Windows 10, these books will automatically open in Edge. The book did indeed open, and JAWS did a nice job with it. And with the latest version of JAWS, text can now be selected and copied. [JAWS-Users] FS Reader And Page Numbers, Followup
As a followup to what I wrote below, in Kurzweil's defense, FS Reader would not open the long Daisy book that Kurzweil could not open. Back to plan b,c, or d? Smile. Rebecca Hello Adrian, Call it determination or just stubbornness, smile, but I think I've found a work-around for determining where you are when using FS Reader. I downloaded a Daisy book from Bookshare and unzipped it. FS Reader opened it and the book was easily navigated, with links and headings, just as in a web page. There didn't seem to be page numbers at the bottom or top of pages when I used the page-down key, so I tried the go to page command, control-g. At first, I just typed in a page number and pressed enter, and after a pause, was taken there. Then, after paying a bit more attention to what I was hearing in the go to page dialogue, smile, I realized that it indeed gives you the page number of your current location-which is exactly what you wanted. So just press control-g and it will say 30, 41 of 356, for example, because the introductory pages which are numbered with Roman numbers are included in the total count. If all you want is the current page number, press escape and you're back to the text. I have to thank you for forcing me to try something new. Sometines needing to teach something is the best way to learn oneself! LOL. There have been occasions where my older version of Kurzweil could not open a very long book. I'll now have to try those with FS Reader. Initially at first glance though, FS has done a nice job with this, and it may give me access to books I could not get my ears around before. I'd even played with opening epub books, they open automatically in Edge, but I still find them cumbersome. . HTH. Re: [JAWS-Users] FSReader; how to locate page numbers
Hello Adrian, I've not used FS Reader other than to read the JAWS documentation. This is not exactly what you're looking for, but it was all I could find when searching the documentation, information which I'm sure you've already seen. Beginning with JAWS 15 and MAGic 13, for DAISY books that have text, the text of the books appear in HTML, or Web page format, in the document pane of FSReader. The document pane is located on the right side of the window, and the left side of the window contains a tree view for navigating in the book by headings, chapters, pages, and so on, depending on how the book is structured by the author. The new user interface has the following items, starting at the top of the window: Title bar - This is where the title of the book you are currently reading is displayed, and it is the top row of the window. Menu bar Tool bar - This has buttons for mouse users to click. These functions are all accessible with the keyboard by using hot keys or menu commands. Navigation pane - This is located on the left side of the FSReader window. It contains a tree view for navigating by headings, chapters, pages, or whatever unit the author of the book used in the book creation process. And this: The Navigation menu contains the following items: Bookmarks submenu Set bookmark, CTRL+B View bookmarks, CTRL+K Go to page, CTRL+G Search submenu Find, CTRL+F Find next, F3 Find previous, SHIFT+F3 I use Kurzweil for reading books from Bookshare. The help key there acts as a sort of status bar, giving you page x of y pages. Depending on whether the information was retained when the book was scanned, page numbers may appear at the bottoms or tops of pages. Also, depending on how the book was scanned, it may have pages, which will work with a next or previous page command, as well as a go to page command, but it seems that often, especially with the "publisher quality" eBooks, the book will have been formatted so that it has only one page. There are usually bookmarks embedded in the document, but again, that does not truly speak to your question as to finding specific location. I haven't played with the FS Reader enough to make informed comments. Sorry this was not very helpful. Perhaps someone else has more information. [JAWS-Users] Chrome Access Restored
As I wrote earlier, after installing the latest update to JAWS through the check for updates link in the JAWS help menu, I could not access Chrome websites after using MS Edge, unless I either restarted JAWS or the computer. Keith Patterson downloaded JAWS through tandem and ran the JAWS repair. Chrome works now after I use Edge. He recommended always downloading the update directly from the website. I'd done that in the past, but alas, not this time. That way too, if there is a problem, the repair option is waiting in the download folder. [JAWS-Users] Latest JAWS Update
I would call this in, but thought I'd see if anyone else can replicate it first. Yesterday, after I installed the new version, I went first to Microsoft Edge, and played around in there with different websites, to see how text selection worked. It worked fine, as I said yesterday. But what I did not mention yesterday was when I went back to Chrome, the Google page loaded, but JAWS showed nothing on the screen. Nothing when I typed into the search box, nothing when I turned the pc cursor on and arrowed down the page, nothing when I refreshed the screen with JAWS key-escape, nothing when I rotated through the f6 options. No luck with Windows-tab or alt-tab in going away from the page and coming back. I turned off the computer and when it rebooted, all was fine. This morning, Chrome was fine. But when I went to Edge for a while and then came back to Chrome, the same thing happened as the day before. This time, rather than shutting the computer down, I just restarted JAWS. When it came back, it had sorted itself out and Chrome is working properly again. Is this a bug? Several others reported things not working properly till the computer was rebooted. I will call it in, or perhaps Eric Damery can replicate this one too? Smile. Re: [JAWS-Users] Using Microsoft Word 2016 and needing combination keys
These instructions also work for older versions of MS Word. In my 2010, the application key does work. But to respond to Adrian's first suggestion, here's something for all Window-Eyes users who migrated to JAWS who were used to the window's status being spoken in the title bar. Windows key up-arrow will maximize the window, as well as the older way of alt-spacebar, followed by x, but if you want to quickly check the status of the window, as we could have in Window-Eyes, JAWS gives that information in the JAWS Task List. Start JAWS Task List. JAWS Key + F10 Opens the Window List dialog where you can view and switch between running applications. It also, conveniently, smile, tells you the status of the window, if the keyboard operator can remember to check there. LOL. If not, here are instructions I copied from a lister on another list. I've just confirmed that they work in Word 2016, which I now use. Joseph the Free Tech guy. To show number of lines, line number, or many other options in the status bar in Word: 1. Press F6 until Status bar is highlighted. Or, until you hear Jaws report, Status Toolbar. It should be the 2nd press of the F6 key. 2. Press Shift + F10 to show options. This keystroke must be used because a right mouse click or the application key will not. 3. Down arrow through the available options, and when you have found line count or something else of interest press the spacebar to check or uncheck the item. 4. when done making modifications simply press AltF4 or escape key. 5. Review your status line to insure the settings have been properly modified. -Original Message- From: JAWS-Users-ListOn Behalf Of Lawrence Sent: Thursday, March 15, 2018 12:53 PM To: jaws-users-list@jaws-users.com Subject: [JAWS-Users] Using Microsoft Word 2016 and needing combonation keys Greeting Jaws Users In some of the older versions of Microsoft Word such as 2003 to acquire page number and line number one would press the comination keys (down page key and jaws key) I've recently acquired Microsoft 2016 and need this information. [JAWS-Users] JAWS Update
I put it in this afternoon and have been playing. I'm delighted to be able to copy and paste using Edge. I had not been using Edge, since I needed this functionality. Thank you. I use the Windows 10 calculator all the time, and am pleased that it now speaks as it should for the most part. Occasionally when dividing one number by another, the result does not speak when the enter key is pressed. Consistently this happens with 16 divided by 4. I have to tab and shift tab for the answer to speak. 20 divided by 4 speaks the answer immediately. I played with all sorts of numbers, but again, only 16 divided by 4 consistently comes up silent on my system. I wish I could play with Office 2016, but I still am happy with my 2010. Smile. I have other things yet to check out, but this was a great update. Thanks. Re: [JAWS-Users] the stars in password fields
The decision has been made, but just a final comment from someone who wrote VFO about this several months ago ... I can understand the potential problems of a spoken password in the workplace, but for those using JAWS For Home Use, rather than the professional version, I can see no security risk. Many of us who migrated from Window-Eyes used this feature on our home computers for years without a problem. There are several physiological conditions, such as arthritis or neuropathy that could cause someone to have difficulty typing. In these cases, as well as for anyone of us who might find typing one thing and hearing another confusing, the person would benefit from hearing the characters as they typed, especially in those situations where accuracy the first time really mattered. Smile. Certainly, copying and pasting is a way around this, but in this case, not only is the password spoken, as it's typed, but it is displayed on the screen, as it would not have been when in a password edit field. [JAWS-Users] Office Versions
Thank you to all those who responded with their thoughts and experiences. In an ideal world, there would be a way to use a new program for long enough to really learn and assess it, and then be able to revert back to the older version if the new one did not suit. Perhaps if there are screen reader issues, they could be reported to FS and they could be addressed. Sometimes small annoyances can be a deal-breaker for using or not using a program. I too use the f8 for quick selection. In Word 2010, JAWS does a great job. In 2010 too, the spell-checker with f7 works really well, speaking everything. Insert-f7 repeats the information; insert-c reads the context and alt-c corrects the spelling (when I remember to press it instead of enter). LOL. To me, enter seems more intuitive to confirm a choice, and alt-i makes more logical sense to ignore. Smile. With Window-Eyes, I used alt-f7, which I sometimes do with JAWS as well. I do use Window-Eyes still in Word for playing Sudoku. The table mode works really well, giving only column and row numbers without trying to read headings. This lets me know instantly where I am when trying to figure out what number would go where. I don't know if Window-Eyes works with Word 2016, and I've not found a way to make tables work well for me with JAWS for Sudoku. There are always gains and losses when updating technology, for us, doubly so, since the screen has to be mediated, and screen readers do the best they can. Perhaps all the tech wizards everywhere could try turning off their monitors and do their testing with a screen reader.? Smile. Thanks again for all the thoughts. [JAWS-Users] Office 2010 vs. 2016 vs. 365
I'm running Windows 10, Fall Creator update, 1709. But I'm still using Office 2010. I hesitate to update since on the list at least, and probably naturally enough, I see more problems than benefits. I've been reading a bit about 2016 and 365 from books on each downloaded from Bookshare. Does anyone have any thoughts about either? It seems these days that screen readers are always playing catch-up as Microsoft constantly introduces changes. Since my computer is behaving and I don't need a new one, the upgrade to a later version of Office would be a choice and not a necessity. Just wondering about others' experiences. Thoughts would be appreciated. Re: [JAWS-Users] Making a keyboard shortcut for restarting JAWS
Hello Matthew, You have to make a keyboard shortcut, since JAWS lets you have multiple versions of the program, rather than installing over the previous version as Window-Eyes did. I use control-alt-j for the current version and control-alt-z for the older one. Just my choice. To make a shortcut, do it the way you would for any other program. Find the program shortcut on your desktop and press the context menu key. Arrow up to properties and press enter. Tab until you hear shortcut key hotkey. Press j, or whatever letter you want to use. The control-alt goes in automatically. Tab to ok. And follow the prompts. This will have to be done with every JAWS update. HTH. I'm one of those former Window-Eyes users who went kicking and screaming over to JAWS. All that said, I only just yesterday started using JAWS for the first time. Anyway, my question is: Is there a keyboard shortcut for restarting JAWS if it and some other software don't play nice together? I'm asking because I'm an amateur radio operator (ham) and use an interface with a radio that when plugged into my PC, takes all the sound away, including JAWS. At that point, I need to restart JAWS, but see no keyboard shortcut to do this. Thoughts? Re: [JAWS-Users] Why does the way JAWS is displaying Outlook messages change?
Thank you, Adrian. I have Outlook 2010 and JAWS 2018, though the problem happened with JAWS 18 too. I'd gone into the Quick Settings menu and unchecked all the options for tables. That made reading much easier. But today I got an email from a company that was missing half its usual content. So I followed your instructions, and got a warning that possibly harmful content would not be blocked. I trust this company so chose to open the message in the web browser. All the usual content magically reappeared. Sometimes there is an option when we open a message to "click here" to open the message in the web browser if the message is not displaying properly. But sometimes JAWS reads this, but there's nothing in the message to arrow to, to read the message and click. There probably would have been if I'd used the JAWS cursor. Smile. I just hadn't thought to search the ribbon for options. There may be security settings in Outlook that could be changed, but I'd rather deal with messages on an individual basis. You can also go into the JAWS Settings Center and configure the insert key to work as a sticky key. That way, it can be pressed by itself first and then whatever other keys are in the command. [JAWS-Users] Two Fixes For Problems, A Comment
I realized after I sent the below message that the typing echo in the calculator should, emphasis, normally be set to none, as it indeed was. But that assumes that JAWS is always speaking the display as it updates, which mine now is not. So until JAWS finds its voice, smile, I'll leave the typing echo as it is now so that I can hear what I type. Rebecca I'm using Windows 10, the 1709 Fall Creator's update, with version 2018 of JAWS. The Windows 10 calculator was not speaking at all. The only way to confirm what I'd typed was to turn the numlock off and read the current line, or to tab and then shift tab back and JAWS would read the display. Both doable, but annoying. I opened Quick Settings and arrowed through the list, just to see if there might be something I could change. There was. Smile. I've never touched this but somehow, the typing echo was set to none. It's on character everywhere else. Now it's set to character in the calculator as well and what I type is spoken. Alas, JAWS still does not speak the result when I press the enter key, so that I still have to tab and shift tab back to have the amount read, or I have to turn the numlock off and read the current line. But the aggravation level has been considerably reduced. Smile. The second problem was brought up by someone on the list, Adrian I think. If I alt-tab away from a page and then come back, JAWS will not always keep my place on the page. It would be lovely if it could remember automatically, but if I remember to insert a temporary place marker, control-windows key-k before I alt-tab away, all I have to do is press k when I come back and JAWS will return to where I'd been reading. I think the documentation says that the temporary place marker will stay until the page changes, so I assume that if the page updates while I'm away from it, the place marker will be lost. Usually though, I'm only pasting material into Word. In this case I have to remember to insert that place marker before I leave. The temporary place marker I set at the beginning of the copy process does not work as a placeholder after the material has been copied. HTH. Rebecca A mind is like a parachute. Re: [JAWS-Users] Revealing File Extensions in Windows 10
I'm using Windows 10, Fall Creator update. Perhaps you've already tried this, but if the view is something other than details, sometimes you have to arrow sideways, rather than up and down, to find all the views. If control-shift-6 does not work for you (I don't get a menu-it just changes) press f6. You should then be able to arrow sideways through the view options and press enter on details to change it. Just one comment, maybe two, smile, about opening attachments. First, JAWS reads file extensions for the attachments I get in Outlook, even though I have extensions turned off. I've read about the dangers of double file extensions in attachments, but from what I read, with file extensions turned off, there will be an executable icon displayed, which presumably JAWS would identify. Second, for security, I never open any attachment, not even when I know and trust the source. I save it and then scan it with my antivirus program before opening it. And again, JAWS has identified it before I begin any of that. Certainly identifying file types is advisable for safety, but perhaps Microsoft assumes that most people would not recognize what all those three letter combinations mean, and has switched to icons instead. Re: [JAWS-Users] Revealing File Extensions in Windows 10
You're absolutely right, and I should have mentioned that. I almost did, smile, but I've had mine set on details since the dawn of time and don't even think about it. If it's not set to details, control-shift-6 will get it there. Even if you have file extensions turned off, you can always use search to find files of a particular type by typing the file extension you want. -Original Message- From: JAWS-Users-List [mailto:jaws-users-list-boun...@jaws-users.com] On Behalf Of JM Casey Sent: Wednesday, December 20, 2017 7:08 PM To: jaws-users-list@jaws-users.com Subject: Re: [JAWS-Users] Revealing File Extensions in Windows 10 Hi. The quick answer to revealing file extensions is to press right arrow on the file your cursor is on and JAWS will tell you the file type--Word document, text document, etc. I never, with this information, needed to turn on hidden file extensions. But if you still want it, with your documents folder open, press alt-f, then o. Shift-tab once to get to the list of tabs. Re: [JAWS-Users] Checking spelling with JAWS cursor
Hi Adrian, I'm using Outlook 2010. Shift-tabbing back in an open message till I get to the "From" line and then routing JAWS to PC does indeed let me check spelling of names. But as I think as also been mentioned, you can do the same by pressing control-r (which you would probably be doing anyway, assuming you were going to reply to the message) and then arrowing down to the "From" line. It's also just as quick, instead of arrowing down, just to tell JAWS to find the word "behalf", without the quotes. As usual, many ways of doing the same thing. Rather than search for the recipe using IE or Chrome, I opted for a work-around. I unloaded JAWS and pressed control a, for select all, then pressed control c. I then opened Word and pressed control v. I then loaded JAWS and there was the recipe, along with the rest of the web page. Smile. I just told JAWS to find one of the words in the recipe title, and then deleted everything above and below the recipe. It was cumbersome, but it worked. The process was even easier when I tried the same thing using the print button. I tabbed through until I got to cancel and there was the recipe, stripped of everything else. Granted, it's far easier at this point to use IE or Chrome, but if you get annoyed or frustrated at not being able to do something technologically that's available to others, there is sometimes a work-around. Perhaps Microsoft will resolve this for us soon. Smile. Rebecca A mind is like a parachute. It doesn't work if it isn't open. Re: [JAWS-Users] Several Questions
Adrian, Thank you. I was just surprised that I got no notification from Freedom Scientific about the October update. The September update popped up when I booted the computer, asking if I wanted to download it. I did see several notices about the JAWS update. I'd already checked the "What's New" for the September update, and probably didn't catch the number change in the message subject line so thought it referred to the September one. I still use Office 2010 and am not having any strange problems in Edge, so perhaps the updates are contextual, only going to those who need them? It's scary what a website can tell about our computers. LOL. With Window-Eyes, we got all updates regardless of whether we were having a particular problem or not. Thanks for your response. Did you put in the October update for version 18? -Original Message- From: JAWS-Users-List [mailto:jaws-users-list-boun...@jaws-users.com] On Behalf Of Adrian Spratt Sent: Monday, October 30, 2017 7:02 PM To: jaws-users-list@jaws-users.com Subject: Re: [JAWS-Users] Several Questions Rebecca, A partial response. First, I knew of the October update only because another contributor here, Mike B, posted not only the alert, but also the download links and the improvements list. You can count on him to keep us advised of every release. FYI, JAWS uses the word "version" to refer to the basic number (such as 17, 18, now 2018). Periodically "releases" or new "builds" are released, and this is where you get the four digits following the decimal point. I'm a long-term JAWS user, but like you, I wait a while to make sure a new version doesn't have something unpleasant lurking in it. I'm grateful that other JAWS users are more eager to keep up to date. When I've tried to copy material in Edge, JAWS says, "selection using the virtual cursor is not yet supported in Edge." I had assume from this that the virtual cursor is being used. And my last comment, for those of you running JAWS 2018, are you now able to select and copy text, or is this still in the works? Thanks. Re: [JAWS-Users] Several Questions
Thank you. I do use both IE and Chrome. I do a lot of research on the internet, so Edge, without the ability to copy, is not that functional for me, though I've been playing with it, wanting to learn as much as I can. Should I put in the October update for my JAWS 18 version? And just one more unrelated question. Smile. Would it ever be possible for JAWS to allow passwords to be spoken as we type, instead of hearing star, star, star? It could be a toggle, so users could select which they wanted. But many people have hand issues as they get older and it's great to have our keystrokes confirmed. JAWS already has a setting to help those with hand issues by allowing the insert key to be a sticky key so that commands can be pressed sequencially. You arrow down the list or navigate by first letter, then press enter on the one you want. Not all symbols are in the list, so it has limited use. I'll leave it to others to explain how to assign a keystroke to produce a given accented letter. -Original Message- From: JAWS-Users-List [mailto:jaws-users-list-boun...@jaws-users.com] On Behalf Of Vicki W. Sent: Wednesday, October 18, 2017 5:44 PM To: JAWS Subject: [JAWS-Users] adding accent marks with JAWS Is there a way to have JAWS automatically add accent marks in a foreign language word when writing in English? For example, if I were to write the name Therese which is a French name but I am writing the document in English, can the correct accent marks be either added or automatically set to add any time I write the name? If I need to add them manually, how can I locate them on the keyboard? Not all of them are on the standard typing keyboard. Hope this makes sense. Thanks.
