[JAWS-Users] Adobe Reader Issues and some questions!
Hi all! How are you all? I have a windows 8.1 running JAWS 14 on it. For some reason my Adobe reader is not working, and it is not reading my PDF files correctly. I think another Adobe reader got install and it is not accessible with JAWS 14. Now this is my first question, What is the latest Adobe Reader version that works with JAWS14 and windows 8.1? I'm just wondering! And my other question, after I download my adobe reader, what are the set ups I need to select so that JAWS 14 is able to read the PDF file correctly? In other words, all the pages, tables and so on. I just want to read my PDF files for school again! I will really appreciate any help you guys can offer me regarding this matter! I look forward in hearing from you soon. Thanks and God bless! Helga Schreiber Member of National Federation of the Blind and Florida Association of Blind Students. [JAWS-Users] adobe reader
Hello, I received a work assignment in pdf format. JAWS reads the pdf ok, but I am having an issue where when I try to alt-tab to my Excel file where I am entering the data from the pdf, my whole computer locks up and I cannot do anything. Even JAWS acts strange. My Braille display (Brailliant Bi 40) displays press a routing button to go to the desktop, but nothing happens when I do it. When this first happened, I couldn't even close anything. When I finally was able to close the pdf file, everything started working again as normal. I was able to save the file as a text document and had no issues after that, but I don't want to have to do that every time I get a pdf and need to run Excel at the same time. Has anyone else experienced this problem with adobe? I am using JAWS 17 professional if that makes a difference. I have used Adobe many times and have never encountered this with my laptop. Any suggestions? Thank you, Kelsey Nicolay For answers to frequently asked questions about this list visit: http://www.jaws-users.com/help/

Gerald, In your step 4, isn't "protected mode" a way of protecting against viruses, etc.? If so, we should at least warn people why that mode is there. For myself, I haven't unchecked it, and I've had no difficulty opening PDF files once the other accessibility settings are in place. -Original Message- From: JAWS-Users-List [mailto:jaws-users-list-boun...@jaws-users.com] On Behalf Of Gerald Levy Sent: Sunday, March 27, 2016 12:31 PM To: jaws-users-list@jaws-users.com Subject: Re: [JAWS-Users] adobe reader DC Okay, try these steps to get Acrobat Reader to work: 1. Re: [JAWS-Users] Adobe Reader 11
Adobe Reader XI has worked well for me. There is an inherent problem with accessing PDF documents with JAWS, in that it just does not seem to want to read some of them. This is not so much a JAWS problem as I think it has to do with how the document was configured prior to converting it to the .PDF format. This does not happen too often, and you should do OK using the two together. Re: [JAWS-Users] adobe reader
Dwight, I don't think that you want Adobe Acrobat and Reader, because Acrobat is not free. So to get Adobe Reader, go to www.adobe.com, click on downloads, scroll down to free downloads and click on Adobe reader XI, which is the latest version. Just a warning, you are going to have Google Chrome and the Google Toolbar installed with the software even if you tell it you do not want it, so after installing, go to Control Panel, Programs and Features, and uninstall both of these items if you don't want them. I guess Trish's best option would be to get a fresh update from Adobe or Ninite. Also Trish, if you can get Adobe to open from your desktop or start menu shortcuts try the following: 1. While in the main Adobe window press the, Alt key, to open the menues. 2. Left or right arrow to, Help. 3. Arrow up to, check for updates, press enter to have Adobe check for updates to your currently installed version. Also, in this Help menu is an option to repair if you want to try repairing the installed version first. HTH Take care. Although many programs need the Java Runtime Environment to run properly, seeing a run time error doesn't always mean that Java will fix it. How did you install the Adobe Reader? Where did you download it from and did you Run it or Save it and then install it. The best way in my experience is to just click on Run, and let the program be installed onto my machine. I have experienced trouble several times after installing it after first saving it to my hard drive. You will probably get Google Chrome and the Google Tool Bar installed along with it, but these are easily removed through Programs and Features. Tell me more about how you acquired the program, and maybe I can come up with a solution. so your saying, I need to dl this JRE and run it in order for Adobe 11 to work? Would any of this have any barring on switching from IE 9 to IE 10? Re: [JAWS-Users] Adobe Reader
No, they don't jerk you around. When you call them the person comes on the line then asked you your name then asked you what kind of computer problem you are having. Then they asked you if they can take over your pc and you have to click a few things as they walk you through it. Then they are logged on to your pc and they can fix the problem. They then will tell you what the issue is. I have used the service many times and have had very good luck with them. They are all very nolagable. Give it a try and you will not believe how well it workds. Re: [JAWS-Users] Adobe Reader
Trish, The problem that you are experiencing could be many things. Re: [JAWS-Users] Adobe Reader
I simply did a system's restore back a few days, and the Adobie 10.1.9 is the only bversion installed. This was what I have been using. It worked as of June when I dl the PDF of my bank statement. This was running IE 9, on July 23, I installed IE 10, and went to open a PDF this week and got the error msg. So something is messed up somewhere. I do not install the google or crome, I know what I need to do to make sure they do not install. Same as for the Adobie flash and it's 14. Here is the error msg I get when trying to use Adobie 10: Microsoft Visual C++ Runtime Library Runtime Error! Program: C... This application has requested the Runtime to terminate it in an unusual way. Please contact the application's support team for more information. That's all I know. Hi Mike,\ Trish received the latest Adobe setup executable from me. I've never had problems running the .EXE files before when installing or updating but, I'm not going to say that the file could not have gotten corrupted somewhere along the line. Re: [JAWS-Users] Adobe Reader
my adobe is fixed. i didn't have to switch ie10 either, which I am most happy. I would like to say something here regarding the OCR function, it seems like my utility bill is a scanned image, but thanks to the OCR and not OB here, I am able to read that bill. Just a little freeby there for yall in case you get a PDF that states empty after opened by Adobe, this might just work for ya to read. Adobe 10 had to be removed and so 11 could be installed, no need of the java either. I'm certainly not saying that isn't important here, just glad I didn't have to deal with it. So thanks again to all who tried to help me today. I'll go away now and hopefully I can stay out of trouble. - Original Message - From: Mike Boyd To: jaws-users-list@jaws-users.com Sent: Wednesday, July 30, 2014 9:08 PM Subject: Re: [JAWS-Users] Adobe Reader Trish, Call the Microsoft Accessibility Support group at 800-936-5900. Re: [JAWS-Users] Adobe Reader XI and JFW
Mike- thanks, thanks, thanks. I appreciate very much that you read and understood the question. I had been skipping the set up assistant and doing the quick method because in the older Adobe versions that worked well. I did not know that they've hidden the open in browser option inside. I still don't understand what the browser settings under Preferences are supposed to do since they've changed the wording. I followed your directions and hope my problems will now be solved. Adobe XI has just been sitting there instead of automatically processing- seemingly waiting for someone to select the 'Start' button which is not in the tab order and not easily navigated to with JAWS. I'll try waiting a bit longer... The odd thing is that when I close the unresponsive first attempt and open the doc again, it acts about like Adobe used to when opening a doc. Re: [JAWS-Users] adobe reader 8.1
This may not be what some want to hear, but I recently tried to read a PDF I received at work with JAWS 9 and Adobe 8.1. and it would not read, except for a few lines at the bottom that were scrunched together. I was going to try to see what Openbook could do with it, but as a last resort, I fired up Window Eyes, and, voila! It read perfectly.
