Re: [MBZ] I'm iced up!

2007-12-11 Thread LarryT
I have always found it amazing to read about deaths from Carbon Monoxide
poisioning - it kills many boaters every year - fumes get blown back into
the cabin area and people have been found sitting at the table, drink in
hand, dead as a doornail. They sat down and fell asleep never to wake up.
It's very dangerous stuff.

Can't recall if it as CO or not, but we saw a safety film that recreated an
accident where 8 or 9 men died trying to hekp their buddies who had climbing
into a large storage tank that had a lay of CO (or some heavy that air
chemical) about 3'-4' above ground level. The guy woud bend over and was
dead before he could stand up. Naturally his buddy would see him laying on
the ground and go to help him - and fall victim himself. The correct thing
to do is to get the emergency response team to help wearing the proper
suits.

While the film we saw was a dramatization the accident it portrayed was
not - it actually happened (in Tx IIRC) and killed 8 or 9 men.

Our 190D 5-speed doesn't make much use of 5th gear. That may

[MBZ] Chrysler Lifetime Warranty

2007-12-11 Thread Tom Hargrave
Mitch asked: Does anybody have a workable strategy for getting Chrysler to
honor a lifetime warranty without suing them?.

Now that's a loaded question, since the Chrysler lifetime warranty has not
been out long enough for any of the vehicles to go past a standard warranty.

My wife worked on the Chrysler five star certification team a while ago and
she'll tell you in a second that they have an excellent service program.
But, take you car in with a worn out engine 4 of sludge in the pan and
you the service manager will have a discussion.

Regardless of the manufacturer, we are mostly responsible for engines that
wear out early. There are some exceptions, like the 3.8 liter engine in my
Son's M class, the rod bender Mercedes diesels and the late 80's
Mitsubishi V-6.

Thanks,

Tom Hargrave

I just assumed that the number of diesel cherokees at any given

More tree limbs fell during the night. One took out our mailbox,
another was across the hod of the SDL this morning - looks like it
fell, then bounced over - no dents that I can see.
The house is at 60F, outside is up to 33F, it's raining. This is the
largest power outage that OK has had, over 500k homes. We saw bright
flashed of blue light last night while driving - reflecting off the
cloud cover. Must have been more power lines coming down.
Out house is served by underground lines, but the sub-station is fed
by above ground lines, so it doesn't buy us much.
I asume it costs more to bury the lines? Seems like we'd avoid a lot
of outages if they were'nt flying up there in the trees ---

Apparently its fairly common on the mini which is what I have.

First the backlight comes on and goes off, then the click wheel center button

Then sometimes it'll repeat a song over and over until the battery dies. Really
odd.
I've reset it several times, installed Linux on it, uninstalled Linux and put

A replacement clickwheel is like $30 but for another $100 I can have another

Now that's a loaded question, since the Chrysler lifetime warranty has not

I bought a Plymouth new in 1989 with Chrysler Mastershield rustproofing,
lifetime warranty on rust through, limited to $2000, must be inspected
every two years.

Selling dealer kept telling me, since about 1995, not rusted through yet,
nothing we can do. Then that dealer closed, and in 1999, another dealer
told me gee, what a mess, this should have been fixed years ago. He
suggested that maybe I should buy another new car and they'd work with
me on the price. I made five phone calls and two more visits to that
dealer over a three month period, every time to be told I haven't
had a chance to talk to my DSM about this yet.
2001, same dealer, different manager. Refused to even give me written
evidence that I brought the car in for inspection. I do have a tape of
me asking for it. Said he'd contact his district service manager, did
nothing.
2003, same dealer, body shop manager #3: Also refused to give me
confirmation that I brought the car in for inspection as required,

because Chrysler doesn't like to honor its warranties.
I could go on, but you get the picture. So don't go telling me that I
don't know what I'm talking about.

Chrysler is a criminal organization that intentionally refuses to pay
valid warranty claims. There, did I phrase it plainly enough that time?

I repeat, how do I get them to pay the $2000 they owe me, without taking
them to court (an action which is long overdue and I am fully willing to
take)?

I wonder if the H2 is in the same category as 3/4 ton pickups, which
don't have EPA mileage ratings due to their being too large to consider
passenger vehicles.

Before they downgraded the ratings, I didn't have trouble beating
the EPA highway ratings. I got 38-39mpg in my 1980 Citation, don't
know for sure what EPA hwy was, but it sure wasn't that high.
1989 Horizon, rated 24/34, I averaged a bit under 35 for the first
100,000 miles. Was a bit under 36mpg before I put on a right outside
mirror and P195/60HR14 tires in place of the P165/80R13. Drove at 45mph
for one tank to see what was possible, got 43mpg.
1986 2.3-16, rated 18/22, I was getting 26-27 this summer. Don't want
to know what mpg it's been getting the last month or so, it doesn't like
cold weather AFAICT.

Re: [MBZ] Pointless vehicles

2007-12-11 Thread R A Bennell
Well, I sure would like to have one of those too but I am afraid I would kill
the diesel with too many short trips
in the winters. The problem is that sometimes one needs to haul and sometimes
one doesn't. Can't have enough
different vehicles as there is nowhere to park them all and it is too expensive
to carry insurance on a bunch of
them. So, I drive the gas Supercrew back and forth to the office because that
is my winter vehicle and my summer
hauler going to the cottage and back. If I could, I might have a smaller car to
drive around in the city. In the
summer I use the old 300D around town. A diesel truck would be nice on the
longer summer trips too but again,
winter would kill it and I can't justify another vehicle right now.

Fun yes, I guess this is why people buy 300+ HP sedans and use them to
drive to work and get groceries.

Not nearly as silly as $50K four door jacked up 4WD diesel pickups hauling or
towing nothing.

Re: [MBZ] Am I argumentative

2007-12-11 Thread R A Bennell
Doesn't a lot of this depend on the quality of the oil too? We are being told
that we can run a 50:1 mixture in old
outboard motors that originally called for as much as 16:1 mixtures. I am
assuming that is mostly because the oil
has improved since the 1960's. It makes me a bit nervous to reduce the oil that
much but I am told there should not
be a problem. If one puts in too much oil, then the motor tends to smoke a lot
and things get gummed up. Not only
that but from a green point of view, less oil is probably good for the lake as
well.

Now that's a loaded question, since the Chrysler lifetime warranty has not
been out long enough for any of the vehicles to go past a standard
  warranty.

Said he'd contact his district service manager, did
 nothing.
2003, same dealer, body shop manager #3: Also refused to give me
confirmation that I brought the car in for inspection as required,
and I have a tape of this guy telling me not to expect anything,
because Chrysler doesn't like to honor its warranties.
I could go on, but you get the picture. So don't go telling me that I
don't know what I'm talking about.

Chrysler is a criminal organization that intentionally refuses to pay
valid warranty claims. There, did I phrase it plainly enough that time?

I repeat, how do I get them to pay the $2000 they owe me, without taking
them to court (an action which is long overdue and I am fully willing to
 take)?
 Mitch.

Re: [MBZ] Chrysler Lifetime Warranty

2007-12-11 Thread Tom Hargrave
Mitch,

You are accusing Chrysler of being criminal when you were actually
dealing with a crooked dealership.

The lifetime warranty rust through package was actually sold by the
dealership they profited from the sale. The sale included an
undercoating package a 2 year inspection. The every 2 year inspection
was designed to head off damage before it became too great this is
where the crooked dealership fell short. They should have ID'd the
damage repaired it early. But instead, they let it ride, hoping you
would sell the car.

You are trying to make the next dealership inherit a mess and I don't
blame them for doing as little as possible. They know that the other
dealership was crooked I'd bet that your car is not the only disaster
they are dealing with.

been out long enough for any of the vehicles to go past a standard
warranty.

I bought a Plymouth new in 1989 with Chrysler Mastershield rustproofing,
lifetime warranty on rust through, limited to $2000, must be inspected
every two years.

Selling dealer kept telling me, since about 1995, not rusted through
yet,
nothing we can do.
Said he'd contact his district service manager, did
nothing.
2003, same dealer, body shop manager #3: Also refused to give me
confirmation that I brought the car in for inspection as required,
and I have a tape of this guy telling me not to expect anything,
because Chrysler doesn't like to honor its warranties.
I could go on, but you get the picture. So don't go telling me that I
don't know what I'm talking about.

Chrysler is a criminal organization that intentionally refuses to pay
valid warranty claims. There, did I phrase it plainly enough that time?

I repeat, how do I get them to pay the $2000 they owe me, without taking
them to court (an action which is long overdue and I am fully willing to
take)?
Mitch.

[MBZ] small claims court

2007-12-11 Thread Glenn Brown
Regarding the Chrysler warranty and small claims court suggestion, I don't
know what state you're in but it's a waste of time in NY. All the person
being sued has to do is have the business incorporated in someone else's
name and the next step requires a lawyer in order to file the appropriate
papers and it wasn't worth it in my case. There are many business owners
with questionable ethics who know how to beat the system. Good luck.

Re: [MBZ] 2 stroke oil

2007-12-11 Thread Curt Raymond

It depends.
Amsoil makes a 2 stroke oil you can run at 100:1. I used it some at 60:1 in an
old Ski-Doo that called for 20:1 and it was fine.
Then I switched to a regular oil at 50:1 and burned that snomwbile down...
If I were going to use less oil than the manufacturer called for I'd make sure
it was a really good synthetic oil...

Yeah it should be considerably better for the lake.

Doesn't a lot of this depend on the quality of the oil too? We are
being told that we can run a 50:1 mixture in old
outboard motors that originally called for as much as 16:1 mixtures. I
am assuming that is mostly because the oil
has improved since the 1960's. It makes me a bit nervous to reduce the
oil that much but I am told there should not
be a problem. If one puts in too much oil, then the motor tends to
smoke a lot and things get gummed up. Not only
that but from a green point of view, less oil is probably good for the
 lake as well.

The standard Chrysler rust through warranty is 7 years but I believe it was
less in the late 80s. 94 - 95 would be about right for the Horizon to show
trouble in a rust prone area.

You also mentioned Tuff-Kote. I'd argue that since the rust through started
showing at about when it should have in an unprotected car that the
Tuff-Kote undercoating was worthless. At least they covered their proverbial
*ss, unlike the crooked dealership you were dealing with.

[MBZ] OT: Is this a scam?

2007-12-11 Thread Alex Chamberlain
So there was this used Generac diesel generator on Craigslist for a
very good price:

http://portland.craigslist.org/mlt/tls/504939058.html

I sent the guy an email with a bunch of tech questions about it (not
harassing him, just wanted to save myself a trip if it's worn out or
otherwise unsuitable to power my house in the next nasty storm), and
this is the reply I got:

Hi ,
The generator is in good working condition and the price I'm selling
it for is $1850, which is including all shippings charges.
I live in Portland but I`m currently working in the UK (London) and
I`ll be staying here for the next approximately 7 months, anyway I`m
using MoneyBookers services so I can sell this generator without
difficulty. I left it at their warehouse before leaving to the UK.
They will take care of the delivery with a 14-day return policy so you
will have the chance to inspect it before final decision.
If you want to purchase it, let me know and I will explain you how
MoneyBookers works and how we can move forward.
I am waiting your email.
Thanks

This sounds like some kind of Nigerian scam, doesn't it?

The best rust proofing comes from the factory. They start with coated

fellows that there is NOTHING YOU CAN DO to stop steel from returning
to it's elements as red oxide.
Stainless steel is much slower, probably thousands of year but, it
will get there.
Do can slow down carbon steel. Galvanized was used on Ford Falcons of
the 60's. Every notice that they didn't rust for a long time? They
stopped because they had difficulty with paint quality.
If you don't want it to rust, just keep all oxygen away from it.

My 68 Chevy pickup appears to have had some better treatment or better steel
than most of the vehicles since. If it
gets a scratch (and it has plenty of them) the steel rusts at bit but then just
sits there. It does not seem to get
any worse over time. My 86 Chevy Suburban, on the other hand, would corrode in
big scaly patches if anything
touched it. Was the steel better way back when or did they treat it in some
manner that they later determined was
not necessary or too expensive or what??

Yes, about normal. The Tuff Kote car was two years older than with my car,
and I washed mine weekly. OTOH, the Tuff Kote car had 40k on the odo in
eight years, mine had about 125k in six years. (51k in the first year)
Both cars kept in the Lansing, MI area, except for the year mine spent
in Champaign IL. If anything, they seemed to use less salt in Illinois.

It's been a long time since rustproofing offered any benefit over a decent
factory job. When you buy rustproofing, you're really buying a warranty.
But it seems I didn't get one after I paid for it.

A friend of mine bought an F250 in October 2001 and took it to Zeibart.
Every year he takes it back to them, they clean it thoroughly, retreat it
in several places, and relieve him of more $$ (at least the Chrysler
inspections were free before they quit doing them for me). He has full
perforation around the wheel wells on the outside of the box. I should
ask him how this year's inspection/retreatment went. His truck is worse
off than my Horizon was at six years. He paid $35k for that truck and
intended to keep it for decades. I wouldn't be surprised if the body
on his 1966 F100 outlasts the F250.

Too bad, it was interesting to look at, because it didn't look like a
typical scam post to me---the description sounded genuine, not like
cut 'n' paste copy from a manufacturer's web site, and the pictures
seemed to depict the item described as well.

I might have to give up and buy a Chinese generator after all. :(

This is called exposure, done to ensure that as many people as possible
look at the ad in the hope that someone will buy the crap you are
selling, even though they didn't want it.
For example if you where to sell a Merc, it would pay to put in keywords
that others may be looking for like, luxury four door, V8 powered, auto
climate control, low mileage, prestige, limousine, sunroof, etc. Then
someone looking for a fancy car will see your ad and go hmmnh that looks
nice, I might buy that.
Of course you being the fine word smith you are would do this tastefully
and not crudely like others do.

Might want to get the tank cleaned and the strainer replaced at the

tank screen around a quarter tank.

Check the clear fuel filter -- I'll bet it's black with flakey stuff.

Re: [MBZ] 1984 300DT

2007-12-11 Thread Timothy Robinson
Oh goodie! Something I've just recently experienced!?

Tank:

I just had a fuel tank replaced. The tank vent apparently had become clogged
and vacume was causeing the tank to implode. It reached the point that my
tank capacity was only about 8 ga.. By that time the fuel sending unit had
been damaged and also had to be replaced.

Though I replaced the tank with a used one, advice on list was that it could
be repaired with air pressure. (Mine was too far gone.) At any rate, check
your fuel vent line?

The bumper strip separating? That was happening on my '84 as previous owner
had bumped something with bumper which allowed slack. The rubber bumper has
a channel by which it slides onto to strips which retain it to the bumper.
They had horizonal (molded) hooks which fit into slots on the bumper. I
reattached mine by threading a piece of wire between the two strips at the
center of the bumper and tightening it, pulling the two toward center so the
hooks engaged the slots. Then I manipulated the bumper strip to center it.
(It was a warm day and I lubed the channel).

How's 'zat for technical talk, y'all?
