Re: [Mpls] Integrating Commuter and Public School Transit?
--- Anne McCandless [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Does anyone know of other cities where this is done and how well it works? In the 1980s some schoolkids rode the SEMTA (Southeastern Michigan Transit Authority) bus through the northern suburbs of Detroit. I remember it built a feeling of community between adults and kids, rather than segregating the kids on their separate yellow bus. I was single at the time and not particularly crazy about kids, but it was fun to see the kids come back in September and take note of how they had grown during the summer. As SEMTA routes decreased due to budget cuts, student ridership also decreased. Which is a shame, because I'm sure Detroit-area schools are facing the same if not worse budget crises as in Mpls. Re: [Mpls] re: Comments on FBI investigation of Police Brutality in Minneapolis
Dyna, I feel your pain. Having thugs live on your block is no fun. Over the 11 years we lived in Folwell, we were regularly sleep deprived by a parade of next-door tenants who conducted screaming matches until 3 a.m. Complaints to the tenants were to no avail; complaints to the landlord (who lived in Minnetonka) always resulted in They pay their rent on time; and apparently no one on the block but us was bothered by the noise. I never wished them ill will, but instead felt bad for them, especially the children. One of the mothers, I suspect, was bipolar; she could be nice as pie one day, totally evil another. But. Most of the people on the block were good people. The problem arises when police see all residents of a particular neighborhood (or race) as thugs. Not all police do it. But enough do to justify the anger that Tamir is feeling. Dyna, are there ANY neighbors on your block with whom you can band together? Maybe there are, but unfortunately maybe there arent. [Mpls] Healing
If the internet had existed in 1967, the conversation on this list would have echoed the conversation in Detroit preceding the riots: anger, denial, contempt for the accusers and their defenders. Thank you Don Samuels for interjecting your words of healing. I have not been actively participating in this discussion because I don't have access to Twin Cities TV and haven't been able to see video clips. I would, however, like to say a word about the word alleged. We use it when we suits us and ignore it when we it doesn't suit our needs. There's also a tendency, in the Twin Cities and perhaps beyond, to say I can't say it happened if I wasn't there. Following that reasoning, the Holocaust didn't exist because we didn't see it, and Bill and Monica didn't do anything because we weren't in the White House. [Mpls] Thoughts on Titilayo Bediakos column
In reading Titilayo Bediakos column today at www.startribune.com/stories/1519/4105372.html I was struck by this thought: As I read it I thought, this is a person who doesn't need to be teaching -- for her, the negatives far outweigh the positives. It made me wonder: what percentage of the problem is the result of teachers who cant teach as opposed to kids who wont learn? Also: how many Minneapolis teachers are prepared to teach at-risk kids? Im not just talking academic qualifications, Im talking about the desire and ability to reach kids who are of a culture other than your own. I work with a gentleman who has spent the last 10 years counseling at-risk youth. He is a rare person who can listen, connect, yet establish boundaries. Yet he is equally gifted in working with no-risk kids. I submit that a teacher who teaches at-risk kids can teach no-risk kids, but not all teachers of no-risk kids can teach at-risk kids. Considering how many Minneapolis public school children receive free or reduced lunches, a good portion of its children are at risk. Poverty brings with it the risks of unmet medical needs, hunger, and households that are one catastrophe away from homelessness. I am not bringing this up to bash teachers. I know they work hard and have nonexistent budgets. Neither would I take the cavalier attitude of, If they dont like their job, they should find something else. However. They do need to be equipped with the skills to reach these children. If they are not getting those skills in college, they need them through inservices or a similar vehicle. I admire Ms. Bediako for writing this column. When I first read the original article I wondered what the Star-Tribunes motive was for publishing it. Like Ms. Bediako, I worried that it sent the wrong message to the state legislature: why throw good money after bad on kids who wont learn. An overwhelming number of people thought the column was a good thing. It takes courage and integrity to stand up as one person and say I dont agree. RE: [Mpls] Re: Is the Startribune still the Johannesburg Times?
I don't think the Star Tribune is any more or any less racist than any other major daily newspaper. Such publications hype articles that will generate water cooler talk, and hence, readership and sales. Unfortunately, people talk about race. (I always said that if O.J. had been accused of murdering his first wife, Marguerite, who was black, the only front-page coverage it would have received was in Jet Magazine.) So even if the Star-Tribune's motive isn't racist, the outcome often is. If the Strib was motivated by racism, I doubt that they would carry Syl Jones's column. Again, Jones is good for water-cooler talk and sales. I never heard of so many people who hate him who read him so regularly. Perhaps a better word than racist would be classist. Covering the candidacy of Mosely-Braun, Kucinich, or Sharpton would not only benefit people of color, but also white households who make less than $50,000. It's ironic, too-- the Strib is a great champion of the Wellstone legacy. I'm surprised they don't give more coverage to the candidacy of Kucinich, who is considered the closest to Wellstone in terms of populism. RE: [Mpls] What do you folks care about/hierarchy of needs
I'm a great believer in Maslow's hierarchy of needs--that a person must meet basic needs such as survival and shelter before meeting higher needs and becoming self-actualized. The same principle holds true with Mpls. neighborhoods: there is a hierarchy of needs. For some neighborhoods, the question is, How do I paint my trim without getting shot? And in other neighborhoods, the question is, What artistic creation can we make out of diseased trees? One neighborhood's need is survival; another neighborhood's need is loftier. Re: [Mpls] Crime and addiction
(response to thread entitled Senator Berglin's Crime) Ive been following this subject with interest, and wholeheartedly agree with Wizards assessment: Chemical addiction requires treatment, sometimes several treatments before the person treated finally gets all his/her ducks in order to choose life. Treatment/AA/NA/etc. can be done in prison. /wizard I work with folks who develop/create/market/sell treatment materials to corrections audiences. My colleagues dont work in a vacuum, but work closely with people within the corrections industry. Substance abuse is a factor in roughly 90% of crimes committed. As I understand it, the frontline corrections folks wholly understand that treatment works. The problem, IMHO, lies with policymakers who set budgets and who feel that any expense that isnt for punitive measures is being soft on crime. Now, I totally understand the need to answer to ones crimes. But the trouble is, these untreated offenders will eventually return to our streets and will continue to raise havoc--not just in the community, but to themselves. Another ideology embraced by corrections folks is cognitive behavior therapy: that crime is a thinking problem before it becomes a behavior problem. People who have created cognitive behavioral materials have commented on the similarity between our (our meaning mainstream society) thought patterns and criminal thought patterns. The difference is, we dont always act on our impulses, while others do act on the thought, He dissed me, he deserves to die. I think this post typifies the delicate balance of discussing race. If you don't talk about it, you're sweeping it under a rug. If you do talk about it, the suggestion is to take it offlist. Given my record of postings, I don't think Ms. Hoberg or anyone else can accuse me of being a venting white person. What I was doing was responding to someone else's experience, and suggested a way to respond without escalating the situation. Re: [Mpls] Gang, Drugs, Patrols, Ebonics, List Management, Racism
I've been extremely busy at work, which is why I haven't responded to any of the posts. But to respond in brief now: Humor can be a very difficult thing to convey in an e-mail, especially if the person reading it doesn't know you well. The originating post did fall flat, but not enough for me to respond to it, I must admit. Words can offend. I remember awhile back using the word nordeast and being chided, offlist and on, for using a word that some consider to be offensive. I do believe that the List Manager, excepting for his weak alibi of having a life g, would have addressed the originating post had he seen it. However, I also recognize the tendency of folks to dismiss claims of racial injustice when they arise. When allegations arise, there's inevitably the response Let's wait until all the facts come out or We've only heard one side of the story. But in the instance of, say, affirmative action, I've never heard Let's wait until all the facts come out. A person of color is accepted/hired/whatever simply because he/she is a person of color. Again, I'm not singling out Mpls. Issues, but I've heard this same argument in many other online and face-to-face discussions. As Don Samuels said in his recent MPR interview, race is a difficult thing to talk about. Especially when talk of the person's behavior intersects with talk of the person's race. That was the unintended case with the originating post, I suspect. I have enclosed the attachment, which Shawn Lewis originally provided to the list. (Thanks, Shawn.) That said, the most difficult things to talk can also be the most rewarding, which is why I hope the discussion continues. Whether R.T. shaves his own back or not doesn't concern me. [Mpls] Say no to Big Bones: support your local rib joint
With the current conversation about Market Barbeque, Ribfest, old Minneapolis, and the Big Box discussion still going strong, the following observation came to mind: I would LOVE to see a Minneapolis locally-owned rib restaurant, such as AJs Smokehouse or Amos and Amos (if theyre still open), take first place at Ribfest. Cant see the allure of rib franchises. The cuisine is watered down to be palatable to the widest audience possible. Does anyone know how much it costs to enter Ribfest? I wonder if the cost is prohibitive for many independent restaurant owners. When a local restaurant has a fire or some other catastrophe, it doesnt always have the capital to reopen quicklyor at all. When it comes to rib joints, old Minneapolis may be as recent as five years ago. Two of my favorites were Art Songs Wings and Ribs on Broadway near James, and the sublime Ma Dears on Lyndale just south of Lowry. If Ribfest entry fees and expenses are prohibitive for local restaurant owners, perhaps a fundraiser could be held so they could take their rightful place as the makers of the best ribs in the Twin Cities. SAM: Mark, what you are describing is what Penn and Lowry was in the 1990s. Can anyone on the list update me as to what development (if any) is happening--or is it still a bare green strip? And why has it been for so long? At one time Penn had a bakery (Mr.Frank's), a florist, and a shoe repair/tailor. I walked to all these stores for my wedding and shopped regularly at them afterward. Mr. Frank's closed when the Penn Best Steak House next door burned down, and the bakery's insurance premiums were so high that the owner chose to retire early. Brooklyn Shoe Repair closed when the owner moved to Chicago. Anyone know what happened to Nancy's Flower Shoppe? Mark, I admire you for your convictions, and if your posts have convinced one or two or several people here that they too can and should follow your shopping habits, you can and should feel proud. But at times the tenor of this discussion has reminded me of the prolifers who harass women entering Planned Parenthood clinics. Please realize that not everyone can afford the purchases that you can and make the same choices that you can. I too was flush with disposable income 15 years ago. After several downsizings in the 90s there were times our family was living on less than $50 a week. (I am not complaining or saying poor me. In fact, I enjoyed the challenge, like surviving in the woods with nothing but a stick and a piece of string.) So when people don't buy organic cotton or $9 coffee, it's not that they don't care about the world and its workers. Many people simply can't afford it. No one is saying that Big Box alone will revive north Mpls. What will revive north Mpls. is a diverse economy of living-wage jobs. I was astounded to read that there was once a defense plant, Onan, where the farmer's market is now. (The book was Overcoming, the autobiography of Harry Davis, which a list member recommended a few months ago.) Besides his amazing drive, another thing that contributed to Davis's success was locally based, independent business owners taking an interest in him. In the 1940s Davis was refused service at a Mpls. bar. His employer, outraged that a valued employee and good person would be so disrespected, filed a suit. When Davis and others were laid off after World War II, he was hired on at Broadway Motors (which Dyna has spoken of) while the head honchos at Onan tried to find a place for him (which they did--the suit and tie job Davis had always dreamed of.) Dyna or anyone: what happened to Onan Industries? [Mpls] Of toilet paper, toothpaste, and Target options
While colorful, cool stores like at Mercado would be appealing, northsiders need a place to buy their toilet paper and toothpaste and other essentials they got at Target. Not everyone has the means to drive to Crystal or to another location. Another store similar to Target would be a good option for Broadway. But since Wal-Mart is repugnant to so many people, I give it a snowballs chance. (Yes, I read Nickel and Dimed, and its why I try to be extra patient and courteous with the employees there.) Other options for the Broadway site: A Burlington Coat Factory: whenever I come down to the Cities I make this store one of my stops. (Theres one in St. Louis Park.) You pay discount prices for quality merchandise, such as J.Jill womens apparel. What I especially appreciate is their selection of plus-size womens apparel and their suits for preschool and grade school boys. (Great quality and style, reasonable prices.) Thats one of my beefs with Target: foofy dresses galore for girls, but nothing for boys outside of licensed-character casual duds. A Petters Warehouse: again, another store that sells quality merchandise at discount prices. At the Forest Lake store I bought a pair of leather tennis shoes for $10 and other bargains too numerous to mention. Plus, its Minnesota-owned. Fleet Farm would also be a possibility. The Brooklyn Park store is on the cusp of a exploding NW sector and wouldnt take a serious hit. (Plus, Fleet Farm carries the requisite toilet paper, toothpaste, and other essentials.) It seems like the best bargain-priced stores are in communities that need them the least. A store like any of the above would be a boon for north Minneapolis. Yes, families of means are moving in. [Mpls] Unpaid internships
In response to the city's call for businesses to hire teens this summer, I had suggested hiring unpaid interns. Someone had contacted me offlist, questioning the value of an unpaid job. Since then I have found out more about internships and would like to elaborate. An unpaid intern is not totally out in the cold. If the school has an internship program, the student will get class credits and in some cases an hourly wage paid by the school. If the school doesn't have such a program, the intern doesn't get a paycheck but perks are still possible. At my workplace in particular, interns get free meals and free access to corporate health faciilties. Also, an internship might only involve two days a week, leaving the student time to pursue paying jobs. Even more importantly, though, the intern gets a foot in the door to the old boy or old girl network. We all have friends who we inform about job openings before jobs are available. If a young person is privy to that information, and logs actual work experience at a big-name company on his or her resume, that experience will make the intern stand out among a crowded field of job candidates. I still remember the first employer who took a chance on me, and said I was hired because mine was the only letter without spelling errors. [Mpls] A Broadway renaissance; living well is the best revenge
I've been reading about the future possibility of a revitalized Broadway Avenue, what with the river development project in the works. It would be sweet for that to happen, with the new retailer (even if it's Wal-Mart) cleaning up in Target's place, and Target out in the cold, thinking about what coulda been. Living well is the best revenge. I remember the reluctance to let McDonald's set up shop again after they closed the Plymouth/Penn location. North Minneapolitans have a long memory. I don't know when the upswing will happen, but it will happen. A similar thing is happening in Detroit. People are moving back to Detroit proper because there are no affordable suburbs left. Birmingham, Royal Oak, Berkley, Ferndale--all were once-downscale suburbs that became hip, and consequently, pricey. The further south you went, the closer to Detroit you go. After Ferndale, there's no place to go but Detroit. Similarly, in the Twin Cities people are priced out of Uptown, Linden Hills, and now Nordeast (sorry, Northeast). Eventually, there will be nowhere to go but north Minneapolis. Of course, someday is of little comfort to the current and longtime northside residents who need solutions now. I have to admit, I'm very conflicted on this issue. Maybe because I'm looking from the myopic viewpoint that my son is in kindergarten and I don't see the relevance yet. I agree that this is an issue that children should be concerned about for many reasons, one of which is they're the ones who will be paying for Bush's war. I understand their concern about children being bombed, that the same thing could happen to them. Would a better strategy, then, be for the kids to amass food, medicine, toys, and other aid for the Iraqi children? {Maybe this is already happening.} I agree there will be kids who take part in protests because it's cool and it's a way to get publicity. Much like the jive-talkin' interviewee who always seems to get interviewed on the 10 pm news and casts a bad light on all neighborhood residents, an interview with one clueless student casts a bad light on the ones who are committed and informed. There was a walkout recently at our local school over the suspension of a favorite teacher. There, I see the direct correlation between cause and walkout. Here, I don't. When visiting politicians would ask Wellstone about healthcare issues in MN, Paul would tell them, You gotta talk to Tom. Once Bill Bradley telephoned Tom, who, business as usual, had to put Bradley on hold to take a customer's call. Strib columnist Doug Grow once wrote about Tom's store, which is the site of monthly political discussions. {Steve Brandt, can you provide a link?) A few years ago I had to get an after-hours prescription, so I got it at the Broadway Target. The Target pharmacist looked at the empty Scheider Drug bottle I brought and asked, Schneider Drug...are they still open? Later I mentioned this to Tom. He said, You tell Target we're still open and we're going to be here for a long time. It was one of the few times I've heard fire in this gentle man's voice. On any day you will see signs promoting affordable heath care in the front window of Scheider Drug. As of late, there is an additional sign, one of those crawling-message signs with a message that reads, We remember Paul Wellstone. [Mpls] Affordable housing and mass transit
{From My First Apartment} There have been some great observations here, and telling ones too, for anyone who asks Why can't people make it anymore? People have pointed out the cost of health insurance then and now, the loss of manufacturing jobs, the benefits of mass transit. Wages were lower then, but the purchasing power of the dollar was higher. Mass transit was key in my ability to live cheaply. Detroit had a fairly good bus system, and I didn't buy my first car until three years after graduation. What's more, back in the day, there were more jobs in downtown Detroit and fewer jobs in the far-flung suburbs. Can we say the same for downtown MInneapolis, or any downtown for that matter? For the first 10 years I lived in Minneapolis, I failed to comprehend its downtown, simply because I traveled there only by car. By comparison, I navigated downtown Detroit by bus and by foot, and as a result knew every building on every block. Mass transit allows you to be more observant, IMHO, resulting in a more intimate knowledge of the city. You don't have to worry what pedestrians are doing or that doofus behind the wheel in front of you. Instead, you can devote all your attention to spotting the third, second, and first block before your stop. In my 11th year, I finally learned downtown Mpls. because of weekend daytrips by bus I'd take with my little boy. If Minneapolis brings boardinghouses back into the equation for affordable housing, mass transit needs to be factored in as well. Re: [Mpls] Affordable Housing - Other Ideas
[EMAIL PROTECTED] asks: Why so many people with out stable housing? That is a great question with a long answer. SAM here: Here's a guess: spotty credit reports and rental histories, inability to come up with move-in expenses. Craig says: Get a roommate, bump up to a 2br, and the savings are readily apparent. Savings of almost $300 per month. Take that times 36 months and you have $10,800. SAM here: I agree. I also feel that not everyone has the living skills to live with a roommate. When we rented to two single women they were regularly calling the police to settle their conflicts. When I volunteered with People Serving People I received a hysterical call at midnight from a woman whose roommate had thrown her out. As for Vicky's meticulous post about how much a minimum-wage worker can afford, those calculations are based on a perfect world: no catastrophic illnesses, no transmission overhauls, not one unforeseen expense. One such expense can send me into a tailspin, and I'm not a minimum-wage worker. I am not making excuses for why people are unable to find housing, just pointing out reasons why since people are asking why. A good book to read is Nickel and Dimed by Barbara Ehrenreich. My God, I didnt think that anyone still believed in this tired old stereotype. From a Star Tribune article about the hit that human services is going to take from Pawlentys budget cuts, a hit that will significantly affect Minneapolis: snip Among the welfare changes would be a limit on the amount a woman could receive, even if she gives birth again. The idea is to discourage further pregnancies. Currently, a woman who has a second baby would have her welfare check increase from $437 to $532 a month. /snip/ I seriously doubt this move is going to make low-income adults say, Wait a minute, dear, wed better not, I wont get a bigger check. However, life skills or family planning for low-income families are written off as pork. So whats the next step? Forced sterilization? Or just punish the kids for the bad judgement/mistakes of the parents? MPR described a partnership called Walk a Mile in Their Shoes about politicians who partnered up with low-income families to experience how they lived. {Unfortunately, I couldnt find a link on MPR, but it was during their recent series Falling Behind.} Tim Pawlenty is in serious need of walking a mile in somebodys thrift-store shoes. What would be worse, finding out about it or not finding out about it until years from now. A few years ago I saw a musical, I think at the Illusion Theater, called Duluth. There were high-spirited numbers by the young African-American men as they gambled, wire-tense numbers by the young white men looking for trouble, plus steamy and provocative numbers by young fairgoers engulfed in the summer heat. It was a bizarre feeling of being entertained, yet knowing a horrific ending was going to happen. An amazing production. I wonder if Mike Opat saw it. [Mpls] People all over the ward, join in
Congratulations to Don Samuels, and congratulations to the volunteers--Don couldnt have gotten there without you. As a downpour starts with one raindrop, an outpouring of support starts with one person saying, Hey, this can happen. One of the most memorable ideas Don expressed was community of spirit, that a community can be of one mind and many locations. In a political culture permeated by soundbites, it was thrilling to hear words of originality and substance and inspiration. Congratulations to Olin Moore, who conducted himself with decorum and who will definitely be a presence in future elections thanks to his supporters. But WHAT does drug dealing have to do with this?? /jim/ I didn't attend the truth in taxation meeting, nor do I live in Mpls, but I'd like to offer an observation: In the 1990s I regularly saw a dentist who was on Penn just north of Broadway. One day when I was in the chair I commented on how great it was that he was in the neighborhood. There was an embarrassed pause, then he said they were moving out soon. I expressed dismay, then the hygienist quickly jumped in, using words like, You don't know what it's like around here, guys hang around in the front of the building and you should hear the language and people are afraid to come in. {I would have said, I DO know what it's like and I came in anyway, but the novocain was kicking in.} To me, that's the connection between drugs and small businesses. You get rid of the drugs, you get rid of the dealers claiming their turf, the Third Ward becomes more attractive to small businesses, the result is more job opportunities, the optimum result you have more folks working and less folks hanging out. Maybe those guys in front of the dentist's office weren't selling drugs, maybe they were. Whatever the case, they were perceived as a threat by a small business. And the innocents who got harmed were the people in the neighborhood who lost a dentist, not to mention the city's loss of tax revenue. Susan Maricle formerly of Folwell Bruno, MN __ Do you Yahoo!? [Mpls] Gordon Parks, north Mpls., and Pope's
I recently read A Choice of Weapons, the autobiography of Gorden Parks, the African-American photographer/composer/author/movie director. {Id read his novel The Learning Tree as a teenager, and never realized how autobioraphical it was--its about a young African American teenager coming of age in 1920s Kansas.} As did his fictional character Newt Winger in The Learning Tree, Parks moved from Kansas to Minnesota after his mother died in the 1920s. He moved to St. Paul with to live with his sister and relucant brother-in-law, who eventually threw Parks out. Parks then began a hand-to-mouth life on the streets, beginning in north Mpls. {Here, David, is the Minneapolis connection.} He was hired as a piano player at an after-hours joint called Popes, which he describes in his book as a four-story ramshackle house in the night-life district. His chapter on Popes concludes with: My job at Popes ended abruptly at the dawn of the new year. Someone plunged a butcher knife through a customers neck and pushed him three stories down into the alley. As the police arrived, I escaped through a rear exit. Running out, I saw the bloody corpse sprawled in the snow; his face looked very young. Common sense, and panic, told me to quit north Minneapoliss north side as soon as possible. I include the grisly details because theyre part of my question: do any north Minneapolis historians know where Popes was? The three stories down into the alley passage makes me think of a building that might be on Broadway or Penn, but for all I know, the building that was Popes may now be the site of a fast-food restaurant. Its not often that north Minneapolis gets mentioned in books. I found the history to be very interesting. Ive tried looking for information on the internet, but all I can find is news about the Popes visit to Minneapolis...not quite the same thing. Re: [Mpls] Redistricting; appreciating; wondering
Brian: thank you for providing the links. I had wondered what other districts were affected by the redistricting policy, since the election only focused on the 3d {and 5th} Ward. Which leads to my next point: I greatly appreciate the news and views I've heard on this forum. News about Mpls. is virtually nonexistent up here, and Twin Cities about the 3d Ward race has been minimal compared to what this list provides. Because I'm not connected to the issues like you guys are, I am going into a lurk mode for the rest of the campaign. It's not enough to say I like this candidate without offering a list of concrete reasons. My support of Don Samuels is based on personal reasons, and though people may scoff at those reasons, I'd like to share them anyway. When my husband and I looked for our first house in Mpls. in 1988, we found a restored Victorian house in the paper for $40,000. Convinced it was a misprint, we called the realtor and drove out to see the house. It was a beautiful house, all right, on Hillside Av. in north Mpls. Admittedly, we were scared off by the neighborhood and continued our search, ending up a little further north in Folwell, where we stayed for 11 years. The fact that Don Samuels wasn't scared off by Hillside--in fact, he may be living in the house that we looked at--to me shows a commitment to hunkering down, spreading roots, and making a difference. People have asked if being present at a riot qualifies someone to be CM. That reason alone, no. But that is the reason why Don Samuels caught my attention. People from disenfranchised neighborhoods usually don't wind up at City Hall. I had mentioned earlier that Don's is an important voice to hear, as is Natalie Johnson-Lee's. {It's a shame that they would be battling for the same job if Samuels wins.} Which leads me to my final point: while I appreciate the news and views on this list, I am mystified by the anger expressed by Olin Moore's supporters. What is the reason for that anger? That Don Samuels is running? That ANYONE is running? Should the preferred scenario be the DFL endorsee against a Republican candidate against all other third parties? The anger over bucking the endorsement reminds me of Ari Fleischer's anger when someone dares to criticize GW. I don't know Olin Moore, but I would think that he would welcome any and all comers. Re: [Mpls] Pedestrian Killed and a Children Murdered, but do we really care?
Hi Jim: I hear you. I regrettably don't recall the incident at the SA, but I do recall feeling very saddened over the death of Abdullah Simmons this summer in Folwell. People I knew were dismissive, saying what did Simmons expect, given the gang that he was hanging out with. I was saddened because 15-year-old boys think they're 10 feet tall and bulletproof. In some communities, when a boy makes a mistake the worst thing that happens is he gets grounded. In other communities, when a boy makes a mistake he pays with his life. I think it's a case of the deserving dead vs. the undeserving dead. Kids like Tyesha Edwards are the undeserving dead. Kids like Abdullah Simmons and Tycel Nelson--well, if they're not deserving dead, they're the unmissed dead. A letter writer to the Detroit Free Press recently responded to an article entitled Another good kid shot dead. That letter is relevant to Minneapolis as well. My heartfelt wishes for a peaceful holiday for all, especially if there is an empty seat at your table. Susan Maricle formerly of Folwell Bruno MN From the Detroit Free Press www.freep.com 'Good' kid? Let's mourn losses equally, and not judge December 11, 2002 It was with great sadness that I read your Dec. 2 story on Mario Smith, the latest young man killed in Detroit. My sadness was twofold. The event is a tragedy, and should give every one of us reason to step back to reevaluate how we live our own lives, and how we treat the people in them. But I was also deeply disappointed by the headline: Another good kid shot dead in Detroit. Another good kid? Why make such a distinction? Is it easier when kids who are not good get shot? Who are those kids? Why are they bad, and how do they get that way? We hear all about the violent crimes individuals perpetrate against one another, but what about the systemic crimes perpetrated against many children in Detroit every day? The children who grow up in poverty, living in substandard housing or, for that matter, on the streets, without adequate nutrition, and attending underfunded schools? The children living in environments characterized by crime, violence and abuse? I would argue that these are the factors that turn children against themselves and one another, that lead them to devalue themselves and each other as much as society devalues them. The media, and society at large, should challenge the establishment to ameliorate these conditions before we begin passing judgment on which kids are good and which are not, which kids are more or less deserving of being shot in the street. Any child we lose is a tragedy. Many of them, however, are lost in spirit long before the bullets claim their lives. We should mourn these losses equally and work to ensure that no more children are taken from us, in body or in spirit, before their time. [Mpls] The Old Neighborhood
Today I attended a work-related event in Eden Prairie, and drove down last night to spend the night. My displeasure at having to drive from northern Pine County to the southwest metro was tempered by the realization I would see The Old Neighborhood. It was interesting to see how much had stayed the same, and how much had changed. There were the obligatory campaign signs for Joe Mullery and Linda Berglin. There was a considerable number of Green Party signs, something I hadn't noticed before. The area immediately north of Folwell seemed cleaned up and more prosperous than before. My old block was still congested, perhaps even more so, if such a thing is possible. My first stop in Mpls. was to see the new housing along Humboldt. I was dismayed to see that the housing was very much like the prefabricated housing that proliferates Eden Prairie. But Minneapolis is home to a diversity of styles, and part of that diversity includes having cookie-cutter housing, I suppose. I proceeded to drive down Penn Av North, Broadway, Golden Valley, Plymouth, all the streets I'd driven down before. Was it nerve-wracking? Not a fraction as nerve-wracking as the freeway frenzy of Eden Prairie. News of the theatre riot led off the 7 o clock news. I couldn't figure out why Elvis Costello was listed on the marquee if the concert was rap. I'm glad that someone on the list pointed out that hundreds of rap concerts have been held in the city without a melee happening. So now I'm home, catching up on my e-mails. Rosalind, congratulations on the great press and best of luck with your new shop! Wizard, you hit the nail on the head with your analysis of rural life. Blessed because it provided offstreet parking. And cursed because in a two-vehicle household, a one-lane driveway {especially a long, narrow one} was virtually useless. Like Catherine's son, my husband works in lawn service, and regularly drove a truck with a small trailer attached. Drivers would regularly park their vehicles immediately up to either side or directly across from it...which is legal, but made it impossible for my husband to get out. If I parked on the street so I wouldn't block the truck, which was about to leave, I would be excoriated by the neighbors. We were probably seen as being wasteful and greedy. [Mpls] Of libraries and hotdish
I read this letter to the editor in the Strib today, thinking it was one of the better-written letters I'd read: wry in humor, incisive in logic. When I came to the name of the sender it didn't surprise me at all. George Rabasa was a former creative director of mine, a published fiction author, and a library advocate. What especially impresses me about this accomplished writer is that English isn't his native language; he was born in Spain. Here's the letter: Library design needs work It has been expressed that the new central library design is the one Minnesotans deserve because We're a people who eat hot dish (Star Tribune, Oct. 2). Would that it were true! Hot dish is good hearty food of warmth and substance. It nourishes the belly and the heart. The proposed design is more like a lunch of field greens with nonfat salad dressing washed down with a nice sparkling water with a twist. Andrew Carnegie specified that his small town and community libraries should give patrons the experience of entering a higher realm, a climb into a place where the spirit and the mind would be lifted. Cesar Pelli's proposed glass boxes seem airy and insubstantial, pretty in a light way, yet ultimately thin and unambitious. A place where knowledge is another disposable acquisition, rather than the means to stretch consciousness to a higher dimension. I hope we consider this design the first step of a work in progress: Please, keep the pot simmering. It's not soup yet. And certainly not hot dish. -- George Rabasa, Minneapolis. [Mpls] Nordeast: a derogatory term?
I received an offline admonishment requesting me to please refrain from using the word nordeast to describe northeast Minneapolis. Once used as a insider term of endearment, it has since been used as a term to demean, according to the poster. This is news to me. It must be to the Star Tribune, too, which used the term Nordeast as recently as June 23, 2002. (Steve Brandt, take note.) As a person with an eastern Europeanborn parent and who grew up with plenty of neighbors who said dese and dose, nordeast isnt an insult, but a tribute to a heritage that I treasure. While I appreciate the posters sincerity, I find it hard to just docilely say okay. So I am throwing open the question to the forum: does anyone else consider nordeast a derogatory term? If so, how did it transform from affectionate name to insult? Im really curious. Susan Maricle formerly of Folwell now of Bruno, MN who still gets her taxes done at Myslajek and Co. __ Do you Yahoo!? Re: [Mpls] Props to Nordeast
I work with an art director who's working on a photo shoot for a catalog. The photographer's studio is in nordeast, and is in close proximity to several prop shops and antique shops. The art director, quite the enthusiast of restoring old homes, spoke lovingly of the aisles of collectibles he found. More than aisles, actually--there was so much stuff he couldn't take it all in. Because our company is far north of the Twin Cities, few people who work there go to Minneapolis. Finding these prop shops was an unexpected delight for my coworker. And I delighted in hearing his delight. Knowing the history of Nordeast and its Eastern European immigrant families, I can imagine the treasure trove of trendy collectibles it now houses. It's great to see that Nordeast after lo these many years is finally getting its props. Re: [Mpls] Two Easy Ways to Fix N. Mpls.
Thanks for providing this link, Bill. I had never heard of the publication. I'm a believer in residency. You can't have forced residency, as people will find a way around it. But I think cops should receive incentives for living in the city, even more incentives for living in the district in which they work. There's a major difference when the cop is seen as a neighbor rather than as part of an occupying force, in Collins's words. When we first moved to Mpls. in 1989, we considered buying a charming house at 38th and Chicago. We knew nothing about the neighborhood, so a friend suggested we contact the nearby police department to get an opinion from them. I still remember the officer's words: It's awful. You couldn't pay me to live here. Now, maybe I caught the officer at a bad time on a bad day. But if that's the attitude he carries around with him, how does it affect his performance? Why does he stay in a job if he hates where he works? If I were an employer and that cop were my employee, how long would I keep him around if he continued to badmouth me to potential clients? I hope this article is read and considered by many more people. Thanks again, Bill, for providing it. Susan Maricle Bruno, MN formerly of Folwell __ Do you Yahoo!? [Mpls] Cordwood Corners
I e-mailed R.T. a suggestion for a housing developing in Minneapolis that's made up of cordwood houses. Cordwood would satisfy his green initiatives, as well as his affordable housing initiatives. Plus, the thick mortar walls are effective sound barriers...I can picture such a development near the airport. If there's room for Ventura Village, perhaps the time is right for Cordwood Corners. www.cordwoodmasonry.com has more information if you'd like to check it out Susan Maricle formerly of Folwell now of Bruno, MN __ Do you Yahoo!? [Mpls] City of Minneapolis Web site
It's a shame that the concept of clarity in government communications is so foreign, that it deserves a prize when it occurs. With R.T.'s Web experience, he recognizes the importance of a clear, easy-to-navigate Web site. Kudos!
