Subject: Which would you prefer in a lens?

2023-12-18 Thread Bipin Gupta
1. Brutal Sharpness. A little fall off towards the edges OK.
2. Vivid Color reproduction - more towards earthy Browns
and true Reds. Little or no Bluish cast.
3. Controlled Distortion in both the X and Y planes
4. Good rendering both in the Shadows and Highlights.
5. Low Flare.
6. Hard Coating to fight off dust, dirt, moisture, spots and
smudges. Easy to clean with a Lens Cloth and lift out gunk
that collects on the front element. Note: I avoid Filters.

I use mostly Zooms so there could be some compromise. I will go on
buying the same Zoom Lens if necessary till I find that "Perfect"
copy.
Regards and a Merry Christmas to all of You.

Subject: What made this so valuable?

2023-04-20 Thread Bipin Gupta
Hi Collin, I had the Pentax Spotmatic way back in 1978. Bought it 2nd hand
in Paris from a pretty Nurse returning back to the Philippines from Canada.
An excellent camera. Still have a few M42 Lenses.
But the Goodwill Price is extremely high, as you can get one from KEH for
much less.

Fancy Camera Strap

2023-02-02 Thread Bipin Gupta
Hi Friends, Arca Swiss QR Plates with Strap Lugs can be bought for US $ 6
to 22 with Free Shipping from AliExpress or WISH. These are available with
multiple options - D-Ring attached to a swivel Carabiner ($ 4 to 5), just
the swivel Carabiner ($ 2 to 3) to a round ringed slot in the QR Plate.
Some come with a hinged Lug. Most of these Plates also have strap lugs at
both ends to attach a nylon Camera Strap. These DO NOT interfere if the
Arca Swiss Plate is mounted to a Ball Head.
WISH has a Warehouse in Toronto so shipments come in fast. But AliExpress
shipments from China may take upto 1.5 months.
My Arca Swiss PU70 QR Plate has both the tripod Female Socket + Strap Lugs.

Lens aperture slow to respond, thus overexposed pictures

2023-01-30 Thread Bipin Gupta
Hi Friends, had a similar problem with a Pentax "A" 35-105 mm f3.5 Lens -
bought Like New for US $ 65 + Tax at Kaufman's Camera in the Bay Area CA. I
reckoned a CLA would cost more than buying another one, say from KEH com -
$ 149 then. I then took the DIY route after reading up some resources on
the Internet and Pentax Forums worldwide.
I decided on a rear entry as this was easier and less complex then entering
the Lens from the front. I knew both sides should be cleaned to remove the
gumming up of the blades, but reasoned the front facing side may just
loosen up a bit too.
I used lots of Johnson's Q-Tips dipped in WD-40 - gently and very little
WD-40 at a time avoiding drips and fibres coming off from the Q-tips. A lot
of brown gooey stuff came out till there was no more discoloration of the
Q-tips.
Put back the rear elements. Had a perfect working lens - checked and
compared with a lot of test shots I had filed earlier.

Regards and Good Luck.

What Pentax gear is on your shopping (or wish) list?

2023-01-16 Thread Bipin Gupta
Shop, shop, shop; GAS, gas, gas ( gear acquisition syndrome).
We have all been conditioned to cajole our Idiot Boxes into telling us to
get new Cameras and Lenses every 4 to 5 years.
Why? Perhaps because of technological reasons, sharper and better picture
qualities etc.
What did we have in our early Film SLR days? A camera that allowed you to
play with the (3) Basics - Shutter Speed, Aperture Opening and the Film
ISO. It was a luxury if you had a built in Light Meter, Focusing Aid,
Double Exposure, Self Timer or some other Gimmicks.
And we produced beautiful results.
God has Blessed us with enough resources to buy the latest Pentax DSLRs and
Lenses, but I have stuck to the Pentax K-5 IIs and some of the best AF
Lenses from Pentax, Tamron or Sigma - (11) in all. I have other systems as
well including Leica, but love my Pentax the most.
I will accept any challenge from any Kindred Soul with a Pentax K-1 Mk2 or
the latest K-3 Mk III.
Just my 2-cents, even though I agree - to each our own - so go ahead and
ask yourselves or your friend "What Pentax gear is on your shopping (or
wish) list"?

Pentax or Olympus?

2021-11-18 Thread Bipin Gupta
A friend on the i-Pentax Forum bought a Sony Full Frame Mirrorless
because his Pentax K-5 IIs + Lenses were causing him shoulder and neck
pain and he wanted a lighter gear.
Within a year he sold it and went back to the Pentax. Reason:-
a) He was not happy with the quality of the photos in RAW or JPEG
b) The body felt unbalanced with any lens beyond a 50mm.
c) The EVF was nowhere near to a Penta Prism.
Hope this helps.

Travel Tripod

2021-09-19 Thread Bipin Gupta
Rick Sir, I am an old timer, and so are my Tripods - some (5) of them
bought over time. Only two are light and strong enough to be called
Travel Tripods - of a sort, to say hold a DSLR with a 300 mm Lens.
Body with the Lens may be just around 3 Kg, but the Lens
Overhang, Stability and Dynamic Load calls for a (9) Kg Load bearing
Tripod with Ball Head. So Sir 3-times the Gear weight.
Both my Tripods were converted to Ball Heads, one
Heavy Duty - to 15 Kg Load, and the other light duty - 5 Kg. The
collapsed Height of the Heavy duty one is some 16 inches and the other
13 inches.
I found on my Travels round the World that the best Tripod should fold
down to 13 inches for ease of carrying, take a gear load of 8 Kg (17.6
lbs) for safety and stability. I have left the Weight of the Tripod
Open - depending on whether it is Aluminum or Carbon Fiber.

So my tripods do not meet Travel Criteria.

Mafia Nuns

Hi Bob, sad that you had an experience different from mine. I went to a

memories, see Dropbox link with some pictures.

https://www.dropbox.com/sh/6i7ddo92jhgw1ib/AAB9D3LUfes8xdeg3stoKFfla?dl=0

Their Education, Wisdom, Spirituality etc stood the test of time that
helped me retire as an Advisor from the World's Largest Automotive
Conglomerate. Who knew then that a nondescript Brown Indian would lead
people from all over the world.
They made no attempt to convert us Hindus into Christians because they knew
Christ spent his "Lost Years" in India where he learnt peace and love.
The Nuns were kindly and pious and we would kiss their cross as they walked
past. The only time I was afraid when a Nun in Black Winter Dress picked me
up to cuddle. I thought she was a ghost as her skin was so white.
Stay Blessed and Safe all of you beautiful PDMLers.

Dear Rick & Alan,
  After Compliments

I went to your smugmug website:-
https://rickwomer.smugmug.com/2021/May-2021/More-New-Castle/
Enjoyed the very colorful photos of homes and their
gardens. Truly awesome.
I also note that these photos are for sale.
Now I live in an area with very pretty homes, a park, a hilly tract, a
railway line, a primary school, a giant community center, jungle
trails with streams all within 6 to 7 minutes walk.
I have some photos of these areas with my cheapo Phone - photos attached.
The Question? Why would someone buy a photo of someone else's home or garden??
Why I ask ? I have many similar photos and some more, and have been
thinking of going commercial to finance some of my professional gear -
mostly Pentax, Leica and a Sony Mirrorless.
Here is a 3-D photo of a fisherman at dusk.
Stay safe and Blessed.

Printer ink fails to dry completely for a long time

2020-11-21 Thread Bipin Gupta
Hello Bulent and other Friends with a similar problem.
I bought some photo paper in Dubai in bulk and pretty cheap. Using a
Canon Pixma MG6470 AIO Printer I had the same problem with the Black
Ink taking longer to dry. It would smudge and spoil the entire print.
This Printer uses two kinds of Black ink Tanks - one Dye Black and the
other Pigment Black.
I am a Techie and a DIY person and a deep research took me to this conclusion:-
a) Some photo papers have a thicker coating on which Ink takes longer to dry.
b) Pigment Ink sits longer on paper before it dries - pigments in the
Ink are some kind of very fine solid and will not enter the paper
structure easily.
c) Dye Inks sink into the paper and dry faster.
d) Cheaper Bulk Ink from Ali Baba was no better or worse than Canon's
original which is 5-times as expensive.
I do refilling as DIY fun and they work OK.
e) Better Photo Paper dried faster - Matte being better than Glossy -
but still the Dye Black Ink took longer to dry.
Experiment with quality Photo Paper.
f) Bond Letter Paper - 90 to 120 GSM - dried the fastest. Not bad -
good print quality.
g) A Radiant Heater placed in front of the Prints made them dry almost
instantly - Best Solution.
Stay safe and Blessed in these Pandemic times.

Pentax lenses I want

2019-11-02 Thread Bipin Gupta
Dear Mark, you would have noticed that in the Film SLR days ALL Pentax
Lenses were Full Frame. Even the SLR themselves were pretty small and
petite looking.
And these Lenses were as large or as small as the DA Lenses on the
current crop of APSC DSLRs.
So why NOT design all Lenses as Full Frame?
This would have kept design and manufacturing efforts and costs down.
Now please don't start searching for a Technical reason why this is
detrimental to Photography.
I just responded to your thread "I want a full-frame version of this lens".
As for Lenses I am a zoom lover - covered between 10 & 300 mm as I am
not into wild life, nature or sports photography - so do not need
longer lenses. No GAS.
Now all my Zooms are brutally sharp.
How do I assure this?? Simple: I will go on buying lenses till I find
the sharpest one. That's the Keeper.
I do have some Prime Lenses because of their f1.2 or f1.4 Apertures
for special Low Light Photography or DOF needs.
Thanks for reading.

There are some (49) other Programs and Apps loaded on the Laptop +
Personal Data, Photos. Videos & Music. Currently 136 GB space is Free

Note: Aim for some 22% Free space on the HD to run your Laptop at a
decent speed.
Windows 10 setup on Hi Performance mode.
USB 3 (Laptop) to USB 3 (say WD 4 TB External) is pretty quick.
Booting is fast too. I keep the OS and Registry clean with CCleaner &

Metaskills mentors and classes

2019-09-17 Thread Bipin Gupta
Hi Kenneth, glad you took a useful Photo Workshop. Most of them are
just gimmicks to make a fast buck from Beginners - a lot who are happy
with useless basics. things that can be learnt from any (40) year old
book o photography - yes Sir, look up Focal Press.
Very few offer Workshops for the Advanced Amateur Photographer. say a
person who has been using DSLRs for (4 to 6) years.

Understanding and using Value / Quality of Light is the prime aspect
of all genre of Photography. And my hats off to you for having grasped
it.
As a Teacher - I take Free Workshops and Photo Walks - the biggest
challenge is Composition and White Balance in changing or mixed
Lighting situations.
You should get minimum five (5) takeaways from a good workshop. I hope
you can share some more takeaways.
With Artificial Intelligence built into most DSLRs today one need not
worry too much about under or over exposure. I use a camera whose
dark and dingy RAW file can be corrected into peppy photos using LR CC
in under a minute.
Over exposure too can be corrected though to a limited extent say by
(5 to 6) EVs.
Have fun with your photography.

2019-05-22 Thread Bipin Gupta
Looks like a good Tripod. As a Design Engineer I think one does not need a
fund of US $ 500,000 to re-design one. A tripod is NO Space Age gizmo. It
is Lo-tech stuff.
In fact I have a trapezoidal - almost triangular - leg design Tripod I
bought in Dubai some 27 Years back - eliminates dead space and minimises
packed down size with an 8 Kg 4-Button Ball Head.
Note a true Travel Tripod should fold down to NO MORE than 12 inch in
height for easy storage either inside or outside the Camera Back Pack or
Sling Bag.
I am afraid someone is going to pocket a lot of easy money.

Odd K-5 / DA 17-70 behavior

2019-05-20 Thread Bipin Gupta
Rick / PJ, the SDM Motors were born bad. If there is any binding on the
motor it WILL draw a larger current, but NOT from Full Bar to 1.
Note: every K-5 series has the notorious Battery Indicator PROBLEM on the
Top LCD, which Ricoh-Pentax never solved.
And with some lenses I have noticed this behaviour gets still bad, though
erratic.
You remove the Battery or OFF & ON the Camera and the behaviour returns to
normal.
Point to NOTE: When you switched to another Lens the Battery Indicator
returned to Normal. So K-5 BUG.
Kind Regards.

GESO - History told by cars - far-far-away nearby county

2018-06-15 Thread Bipin Gupta
Hello Igor, Ann, Jeyan, as Canadians Cubans welcome us in the
friendliest way possible. Also because of our Dollars - photos 5066 &
5166, the grandeur of our hotel. Our Guide - who is actually a
Professor earning US $ 40 a month - showed us the real Cuba few
tourists get to know.

Cuba is a welfare state - so the state takes care of all your needs
including food rations.
And because of the US embargo they are forced to use older American
cars, though cheaper Korean and Chinese newer models have started
making back door entries.

But don't be fooled by the American oldie's exterior. Cubans are great
DIY guys and very good Mechanics. The interior is almost all new as
well as the engines and the air conditioner - all retro fitted. All
the other body parts like brakes, shockers etc are modern adaptations
with parts readily available from back door imports mainly China.

Decay is seen everywhere - photo 4879 LHS, but the beauty of the old
mansions, the mighty squares, the cheerfulness of the people are
evident. Our Guide told us the Spaniards killed of all the natives and
the few that were left were killed off by diseases from the invaders.
You can see a native in photo 4949 with the Padre.

The D FA 70-200/2.8

2018-05-20 Thread Bipin Gupta
Hey Paul, if you buy Amazon Market Place stuff you will receive "Open

Amazon is NOTORIOUS for this however much they "Apologize".

There is no excuse from them if you purchased New Items. Putting a
Shipping Sticker on the original Pentax Lens Box is SACRILEGE and
bound to shake loose the innards of the lens.

I received a new Lens from Amazon India, packed in a huge corrugated
carton with inflated pillow packs and bubble wrap inside. But I did
take some time to phone in to Amazon in advance.

Enjoy your new baby as it is a fine lens, though a bit heavy for old
farts like me.

Weird battery behavior

2017-11-19 Thread Bipin Gupta
Hey PJ, I have had that happening to me before. Just clean the Battery
Terminals with some alcohol and then rub dry.
Try putting it back in the charger.

I request you check the Charger too for odd behaviour and like wise
clean its terminals too.

But before you throw away the Pentax OEM battery, if it is really bad,
just give it a quick shock treatment. This battery is around 8 volts.
So use an SMPS Adapter outputting 15 to 20 volts - your Laptop Charger
should be fine - and briefly touch the terminals of the OEM Battery
from the SMPS. Please take care of the Polarity.

People's thoughts on Adobe CC photoshop

2017-11-16 Thread Bipin Gupta
I've been using Photoshop for donkey years, but stopped with the CS6
version for a couple of reasons:
a) Photography is my hobby and I am not into it for money. Also I have
this idiosyncrasy to own the very best of things like shoes- Bata,
Cameras - Pentax, Watch - Rolex & Omega, Cars - Infinity, Travel
Luggage - Samsonite & so on.
But I changed to a 4K Intel Core i7 laptop, and the fonts + modules
appeared miniscule and I could not read them. Adobe & Microsoft were
at loggerheads blaming each other so the problem remains unsolved.
RIP Photoshop CS6.
b) $ 10 a month may appear small, but I would rather own my own
software which resides on my own machine, not somewhere in the cloud.
Reason why I have not moved into a Gated Community where you pay a
monthly service + maintenance charge and listen to all the Rules they
make.
I rather have my own little house at the meeting point of 4-Roads -
what is called a unique corner site.
c) I have used a number of Software - Pentax's own PDCU5, Cyberlink
Photo Director, DxO Optics Pro, Lightroom + some more, but find LR CC
2015.12 with the NIK interface the friendliest, easiest & fast.
d) I am aware that Photoshop is the Studio Owner's and Pro Photogs
favorite, so they will have to go on using it in whatever way Adobe
hands it out to them - whether they have a choice or not.
Not for me, as I will move on to something else like Luminar, GIMP etc.

blew it to 100%. Some artifacts just began to show up. In fact the
blue in the sky had no noise or color fringing whatsoever.

I do understand that Dropbox resizes an already resized JPEG.
Unfortunately I did not shoot RAW. I use Lightroom Paul. Let me make
another attempt at your suggestion.

I have attached the photo again for Larry - Horizon check.

https://www.dropbox.com/sh/gjgwa0n028enk38/AAAoO2HAv93Qf0uNqVnm24I7a?dl=0

Those are black volcanic rock with some kind of "Fairy Dust" on them,
that they shine. I tried a 3-D effect in Lightroom - separation of all
the 4-elements - the rocks, the sea, the island in the distant and the
clouds. Also the sun was peeking out from the clouds so I had to move
around to avoid lens flare.

Thank you for the helpful feedback.

Hi Larry, I re-checked the photo on my screen and found no artifacts.
In fact even the horizon is straight as measured by the chequered

It is exactly the same Photo I sent you after your very helpful suggestions.

Thanks to all the wonderful PDMLers for looking

The Fisherman

2017-09-24 Thread Bipin Gupta
Driving along the coastal road as dusk set in we came upon some
intense black rocks, threatening clouds that hid the sun and an island
in the distant haze. The sea was shimmering. I could not resist but
stop and take some shots.

I took the Fisherman's permission for the shots with the Pentax K-5
IIs and the Tamron 17-50/2.8. Here is the photo - PPd a bit with the
help of Larry Colen. The exif data is intact.

I tend to expose to the left, and to keep the Fisherman nondescript I
kept him in the "dark". I also shoot 88% JPEGs as I do not want to
waste time on PP. I will resort to RAW (DNG) only on difficult photo
shoots - mixed lighting (cannot get WB right), foggy, damp and lousy
weather etc.

Comments and criticisms are welcome.

For Posterity - Disappearing Cultural Ethos

2017-09-15 Thread Bipin Gupta
Photos from a typical street life in Northern India - mid 2017.
Portrays a disappearing cultural ethos from our lives - like that man
with an entire stores on his head or held just by one hand.
Look at the green e-Rickshaw vs the manual powered one. Many activists
want the hand or leg powered Rickshaw banned as it is against human
dignity.
Look also at the riot of colors.

And no one bothers you as you go around photographing street life with
a huge DSLR - in fact folks smile and almost all of them want to give
you a pose.

These are the lands Gautam Budh travelled spreading love and
compassion. And also visited by Apple's Steve Job seeking

Subject: Re: Inexpensive Pentax AC adapter

2017-08-10 Thread Bipin Gupta
One hears these adages quite often like "You pay what you get for", "Cheap" etc.
Is it true?? NOT for the smart guy - or call him frugal, Mr. Scrooge
if you wish.
Cheap need not mean it will damage your camera or fail.

So here is what I did. Bought a German Hama SMPS Multi Volt Adapter for $12
on sale from Media Mart while in Cologne, Germany.
SMPS (switched mode power supply units) are one of the safest circuitry used in
digital equipment & electronics. This one had a 3-way safety circuit.

Bought the Connector Pentax uses for $ 2.40 each - called the Male Hirose 3-pin
MQ172-3SA Plug. God alone knows why Pentax uses obscure stuff and not
simple Japanese Standard Connectors.

Soldered two thick copper pins which plugs into the Universal Socket of the Hama
Adapter. Works great on my Pentax DSLRs.

Note: wiring the Hirose connector - the center pin is a dummy, the Ground pin is
top most one viewed with the plug inserted into the camera. The 8.3 volt pin is
the bottom most one.

PJ Sir, pretty good picture considering dusk time and street lighting.

PS: I spent some 19 years in the Middle East, North Africa & the CIS
where Hookah smoking, Turkish Coffee & Nuts are a pastime.
Here in India Hookah was very common, but not now because of
health concerns. I still have my Dad's Hookah painted in 24 Carat
Gold, silver mouth piece with the tubing braided in Gold
Thread. My Grandma would smoke the smaller hand held version. There
were
some (4) four Tobacconist - all Moslems - in our neighborhood,
who would make fresh moist Tobacco balls in some (18) Flavors to
order. My Dad preferred the "Spicy" and my Grand Mom the
"Sweet" type. I have a small supply in the Freezer from my Birth place
Patna some 2100 Km up north from Bangalore my home town. Down
South there are no Tobacconists.
In Libya you can smoke it on the side walk Restaurants.

Yellow Home Lighting - Color Cast & Skin Tones

2017-06-27 Thread Bipin Gupta
Many homes still use yellowish light for internal illumination instead
of the less power hungry LED bulbs.
And photos come out with a strong color cast especially skin tones.

I have given the link to a sample photo which shows the yellow color
cast - though surprisingly the skin tone is fairly OK:-

https://www.dropbox.com/s/svjhqjveewcwt0d/Yellow%20Light%20Example.jpg?dl=0

The Question: Should we neutralize the overall yellow color cast and
correct the skin tone in post, or leave the photo as it is??

I often end up with "sick" looking skin tones when I adjust the WB
Temperature in Lightroom.

Looking forward to your feedback on your preferences.

Lens improvements

2017-06-08 Thread Bipin Gupta
Dear Dan, Pentax lenses have always been technically very advanced -
at least my first SLR bought pre owned in 1975 - a Spotmatic with a
Takumar proved to be.

The reason I latched on to Pentax were the grand Lenses - after owning
a Pentacon, Nikon, Kiev-19, Leica, Ricoh SLRs.

I was amazed at the 35 - 135 F3.5 "A" zoom lens. Sharp all the way
through - remember that this is not a computer designed lens. And I
picked one up in Mint condition from a Pop & Mom Store in the San
Francisco Bay Area for $65 + Tax.

I have attached my first attempt at Water Drop Photography using this
lens which also has Macro - see attached link.

Stuck Battery In Pentax Q

2017-06-03 Thread Bipin Gupta
I've had a DLI90 battery swell on the flat sides and get jammed inside
the camera.
So I first googled and found out what was inside the plastic shell.
Found it had two Lithium cells
connected to a tiny motherboard sitting on top.
So using a drill without caution would go through the motherboard and
perhaps cause problems.

So I used a craft drill with a 2 mm drill bit at slow speed. I wrapped
a colored electrical tape 1.5 mm
from the tip which was about the thickness of the battery shell.

Drilled gently to puncture the shell without touching the motherboard.

Bent 2 #s 2 mm thick steel strip into L-shape and stuck them on top of
the battery in a T-shape with
Araldite Epoxy - slow curing type. Let it to cure for 24 hours.

Then drooped just a wee bit of Singer Sewing Machine oil on both the sides.

Grabbed the steel strip and slowly pulled out the battery.

The battery shell was swollen on the camera contact side.

Before scrapping it I dared to charge it on a cheap ebay charger. Then
checked the voltage. Eureka
8.4 volts. Checked for heat build up and there was none.

Peeled the sticker on the swollen contact side and rubbed it down on
an Emery Sheet. Put it inside
the K-5, and voila the camera showed Full Charge and it was working.

Better sense got hold of me and I scrapped this 3rd Party 3-year old
battery. Had won it on an evil bay
bid for $ 3.99. Lesson learnt - use good quality stuff like DSTE or
Wahabi for $ 6 to 9.

Note: I have used some (9) #s 3rd Part Batteries on my K-20D, K-5 &
K-5 IIs with just this loss.

Third party DLI-90 suggestions?

2017-05-31 Thread Bipin Gupta
Larry, good observation with the 2-pins on the DSTE Charger vs 3-pins
on the Pentax original.

Here is the surprise. When you slide off the interchangeable top plate
- optional plates for all manufacturer's models are available for $ 2
- you notice there are actually 3 pins below.
So don't know why they did not provide 3-pins on the top plate?

Third party DLI-90 suggestions?

2017-05-31 Thread Bipin Gupta
Dear Larry we bought 2 #s DSTE batteries along with a Universal Travel
Charger for $ 17.99 with Free shipping from evil bay - August 2016.

The batteries are working fine, and I would say as good as the Pentax
original. With the third recharge it lasted perhaps as much as 90% of
the original.
The best deal is the Charger - has pins for direct plug-in to the
wall socket - no messy cables - the top plate can slide out to take
plates from all Pentax Battery Models as well as from Canon, Nikon,
Sony, Fuji, Panasonic etc. Great design.
Charges pretty fast and has auto cut off.

In 2014 we bought the same DSTE x 2 #s from Amazon - $ 12.99. They too
are working great.

Claimed mAh is pretty crazy and false. Here is a good test. If the 3rd
party battery weighs as much as the Pentax original then it will hold
1600 to 1800 mAh.

Why I say this? I won a bid from ebay Canada for a no name brand DLI
90 for CAD 2.20 with Free shipping. It was surprisingly very light -
about half the weight of the original. But hey, it still works albeit
with just 1/4 staying power.

Digital Slide Scanners

2017-04-10 Thread Bipin Gupta
While working in the Middle East, circa 2007, we had an HP Scanner
that took slides or 35 mm negative roll film (6) #s at a time.

It had an ingenious double lid with the top one for film and the
bottom lid for the normal document or photo scan.

It had (2) separate scanning lights one inside the top lid and the
other one built into the scanner body.

The moment it finished a scan it would throw out (6) separate pictures
- a +ve picture from the 35 mm negative roll film.
Of course the picture from the slide film would be a perfect
representation of the slide.

You could do basic correction & enhancements before or after a scan.
What was surprising was the automatic cleaning up effect of dusty,
speckled & color damages of the slide or negative on the finished
output - like magic.

I am sorry I do not remember the model #, as we lost it along with all
our possessions including our brand new Subaru Legacy in a flash
flood. The villa was submerged with 7 feet of water measured from our
drive way. It was a national disaster. We just saved our lives.

SF Camera Store Closing

2017-04-02 Thread Bipin Gupta
Hi Larry & SF Bay Area Folks + Others, it is sad when Mom & Pop Stores
close, as some of them become so embedded in a city's cultural life.

Kaufmann Cameras was another one of those iconic stores in San Mateo,
the Bay Area, California. I believe they moved some where near South
San Francisco an sincerely hope they are doing well.

The owners, elderly folks were gentle people with encyclopedic
knowledge of all things photographic. And their used gear were
certainly cheaper than that of KEH. I can confirm this as I bought
some three Lenses & two TCs from them + lots of little accessories
like Bags, Ball Head, Filters, Lens Caps etc.

Here is a photo of the Store in San Mateo:-

SF Camera store closing

2017-04-02 Thread Bipin Gupta
Hello PJ Sir, here in India particularly in Bangalore you will find
one Mobile Phone Store every 30 to 40 meters (100 to 130 feet).

Smart Phones are a craze especially the latest 4G voLTE (HD quality
sound & video) for as little as INR 3999 ($ 62). I bought a decent one
with a pretty good dual 13 + 5 MP Camera - with 4100 mAh battery + 2
GB Ram + 16 GB Rom + 2 SIM Slots for $ 94) - LYF Wind 4S.

It is illegal to sell "LOCKED" phones in India. Instead you get a Free
SIM from a Service Provider - Say Reliance JIO - & buy for INR 303 ($
4.70) with free Local + All India calls + 4 GB 4G Data for (1) month.
"Roaming" is free - that is if I travel to Delhi there are no extra
cost while making a call. All Calls Received + Messages are Free.

Apple has started manufacturing iPhones in Bangalore. At first they
wanted to sell "Refurbished" & "Pre-owened" (2nd hand) phones in
India, but the Govt. refused permission.

Just sharing information to give you an idea of comparative costs.

DSLRs are hot selling "toys" here. Mom & Pop stores are still
dominant, but on line stores like Amazon, Flipkart, Snapdeal etc have
started the "kill".

With half the Tourists in Europe from India, this trend will continue.
People no longer want a P Camera as their Smart Phones are just as
good

The Canikons steal the show with starter kits including Lenses for around $ 340.

Unfortunately Pentax does not have a DSLR at this price point.

What is the connector for the Pentax K-5 USB cable?

2017-03-05 Thread Bipin Gupta
PJ Sir, I bought the $ 1 USB cable for my K-20D in 2009, as I said
from San Mateo in the Bay Area California.
And it is still working fine.

I always transfer my photos using the USB cable connected to my
Laptop, after reading a few stories of
damage to the Card Slot.

Then the K-5 series has a design problem with the Card Door making it
awkward to push in and then pull
the card out - not so om my older K-20D.

Here is one for $ 0.93 to 1.14 with Free shipping to the US from
AliExpress (China evil bay equivalent)

https://www.aliexpress.com/item/1M-8-Pin-USB-Data-Cable-for-Nikon-Olympus-Pentax-Sony-Panasonic-Sanyo/32793799511.html?spm=2114.40010308.4.71.1x09IY

https://www.aliexpress.com/item/1M-8-Pin-USB-Data-Cable-for-Nikon-Olympus-Pentax-Sony-Panasonic-Sanyo/32793799511.html?spm

PJ Sir, this line has been made defunct by manufacturers in India,
China, Taiwan, Korea, Philippines, Indonesia, Malaysia, Vietnam etc"
"you get what you pay for" as cheap no longer mean poor quality for
many many items.

I bought a Made in India LED Video Light (108 dimmable LEDs) for US $
8. Powerful and fun to use and it is still working great. I posted it
on the Pentax Forums with the sample videos.

To give you an example 3rd Party Batteries (note Pentax do not make
them, they farm them out), Zomei GND or CPL Filters, the CAD 6
including postage Shoulder Sling Strap I bought from China - just as
good as the Brand name ones for $ 40 to 100 ones, etc etc.

Believe me PJ Sir, as Mechanical Engineers we do an FMEA (failure mode
effect analysis) when we design a product. So I would not put a CAD 6
(US $ 4.50) Sling Strap on my expensive $ 2000 gear if it was not just
as strong.

You get exactly the same 3rd Party Brake Pads for my Car at 1/10 the
price here in India. But I buy the original as I will not put my
family and my life in peril. Note: here precious lived are involved.

Just that you have to be money smart PJ Sir, and perhaps a bit lucky.

I bought one for USD 1 from a Computer Shop in San Mateo on S El

How to adapt Sigma 8-16mm for Pentax K1

2017-02-26 Thread Bipin Gupta
STOP! Do not cut the Lens Hood out first. Note, it has a flower petal
type hood with the longer petal on the top & bottom.
It's these longer ones that causes the vignetting.
Try twisting it to the LH / RH position from the top. Take shots and
see the results.

If it won't budge (after you have tried both the CCW & CW twist), mark
the top & bottom petals to follow the petal shape. Now use the smaller
1/4 inch hack saw blade without the handle.
Check the photo. Go on cutting by trial and error.
Make sure you don't graze the lens. Stick a 3M Post It on the Lens as
protection.
Then use emery paper to smoothen the rough cut surface.

If the LH / RH vertical petals are the culprit too, mark and cut with
the hack saw.

Good Luck.

Storage wars

2017-02-06 Thread Bipin Gupta
The greatest havoc is caused by Hard Disk Failure. You loose 1 to 4 TB
of Photos at the click of your thumb.
But you loose only a few GBs on a failed DVD. Generally CDs from the
80s & 90s & recent DVDs + Blu Ray Discs should play fine
assuming you have not scratched them.

So here comes the 1000 year M-Disc - archival disks - literally in
destructible. How?? Normal CDs & DVDs have Organic Dyes in them that
fade or destruct making them unreadable in Disc Players over time. You
get M-Discs in capacities upto a 100 GB and the prices are falling.

The data layer on M-Discs are indestructible highly polished rock
pieces. I bought a 4K Toshiba Laptop in Toronto 3-years ago with a Blu
Ray Recordable Drive. Using the Free ImgBurn Software I can burn the
M-Disc - pretty fast & sweet - no failures so far.

I bought a pack of 5 x 25 GB Verbatim M-Discs a year ago for US $

As to that thousand-year claim, the U.S. Navy will back that up. It
tested M-Disc DVD+Rs along with archival quality DVD+R/RW and
DVD-R/RW, subjecting them three times to a 185 degree, 85-percent
humidity, full-spectrum light environment for 26.25 hours. Every DVD
failed—except the M-Discs, which suffered no noticeable degradation.

Boston

Hello Gonz Sir, I am glad the photos brought out some happy memories.
We are glad we dined at the Oyster House.
Oh my God! That Clam Chowder & Lobster were simply out of this world,
a foodies delight yummy yum.
You are spot on Gonz Sir.

And John Sir, I am a little confused when you say "Legal Seafood
aficionados might challenge that claim ..."
If not for the food, one should go to the Union Oyster House for its
Old World Charm. It was established in 1928.
Beautiful work of Art inside and tools + stuff used by the early
European Settlers. I saw some old Wooden Cameras too.

I am a Non Resident Indian, a Foodie and a well traveled old fart on
my duties as an Advisor in the world's largest conglomerate.
I can vouch for Gonz Sir when he says "Yum, Union Oyster House... Been
there a few times when I lived there.
Some of the best Lobster, and for sure the best clam chowder. Or as
they say in Boston, "Chowdah"

The only other place I had yummy Lobsters was in Tripoli, Libya along
with a relaxing smoke of Hookah. No Clam Chowder there but an
excellent Crab & Fish Soup.

Hello John, we visited Boston from Toronto at almost the same time as you.
What a Photogenic University Town including nearby Cambridge.

Enjoyed the photos posted by you. They bring out the spirit of this old city.
The colors and composition are excellent.

Here is the link to some memorable photos from Boston. Taken with the
Pentax K-5 IIs
+ the Sigma 10-20 EX DC Lens. Note how brutally sharp this lens is,
even after each
photo has been reduced down drastically from 15 to 19 MB each.

Anyone looking for Zeiss Optics

2017-01-23 Thread Bipin Gupta
One can't disagree with you Zos especially if one had pots of money or
were a PRO or were an old fart like me.

But foot in mouth, may I add that in todays use and throw world -
repairs difficult & expensive - plastics are just as good as metal.
In fact space age plastics are stronger than steel - such is our
technical marvel.

And soon plastic will replace glass lenses too.

Any way I have a horde of lenses from 70 years back to today - mostly
consumer lenses but darn good.
Here is what I do to pick the sharpest and the best value for money.

a) Read up reviews on the Internet. Example there are Pentax & Russian
Lenses of Zeiss design but at less than half the cost.
So I pick up a few.
b) I will repeatedly buy a consumer lens till I get one that is darn
good and in like new condition. These are my keepers.
Example I have a Sigma 10-20 EX DC f4-5.6. When enlarged you can
see the pores or hair on a ladies face much to her
disappointment.

German lenses like Zeiss were good in the days of B Photography bye
& large - stress on bye & large.
But modern day computer designed optics in space age plastic bodies
will outrun most - emphasis on most - old German design
lenses - in color, contrast, sharpness & pop.
Except for the rare legacy glass. One is the Pentax A 35-105 f3.5
macro if you get a good copy.

I don't see why one should not buy Zeiss if one has the moolah, is a
Pro or wish to have bragging rights.

A lady friend of ours bought a Sari for INR 180,000 (US $ 2600) and
chose to leave the price tag on.
Most Party or Marriage wear Saris cost $ 300 to 400 as per the misus.

May the Force be with you.

Anyone looking for Zeiss Optics

2017-01-22 Thread Bipin Gupta
70 Years or more ago Zeiss and the Germans made good lenses - perhaps
the best - as there were no others making lenses then!!??
The Russians and the Japanese stepped in to slowly match Zeiss and
later exceed them.
They were followed by the Koreans who made equally good optics.
And now the Chinese are repeating History once again.

Even countries like the Philippines, Vietnam, Thailand, Indonesia, etc
make - err rather assemble - great Lenses & Photo Gear.

Well the truth is this statement has been made popular by one of our
own PDMLers:-

"Buy a Leica, get the full Leica Experience? - a quick reduction of
funds in the bank a/c".

Where LEICA = ZEISS now (ie please replace Leica with Zeiss in the
statement above).

There you are, go ahead and buy a Zeiss Len for $ when you can buy
similar or better ones for much less
er
friends.

2017-01-18 Thread Bipin Gupta
Hello to Our Sweet Ann, I mentioned in the Post "just in Zest".
Yet Larry took it so seriously. Tut tut Larry.

Ann, I am happily married to Madhuri, an Industrial Psychologist, since 1972.
Our Home Town is Bangalore, India, but we spend most of our time in
the US or Canada.
We love both these places - beautiful people.
We are NRIs - Non Resident Indians.

Thanks God, no Divorce , inspite of offers from so many pretty Women
in North America.
And the reason for the "No Divorce"?
I am a Foodie, and Madhuri makes yum yum Western + Indian + Chinese Dishes.
Plus she never asks me about the Photo stuff I buy. She says you are
happily retired now & you can
buy all the "Toys" you like.

Honestly Ann, I am stuck with the K-5 IIs and have not yet seen the
need to buy the K-1. So no need for
permission from the Missus.

And hey Larry, whats your comment, to this one - "The Prettiest Women
to photograph are from the Indian

"DON'T TELL THE MISSUS" is such an oft heard and written word in

Not unless you are using your Missus's Money to buy the Gear - which
is considered most unmanly in many Cultures.

In Asian Culture real MEN don't ask their MIssus for permission to buy
Gear. We just go buy the Gear and tell our Missus so.

PESO - Pedicabs

2016-12-06 Thread Bipin Gupta
Hello Rick your jazzy photo of the Pedicabs is awesome.
This is an excellent example of a low light night shot.
A bit hazy because of the bright colorful lights but it conveys the story.

Here are photos of the REAL PEDICABS drawn by HUMAN HORSE POWER.

These folks are the poorest of the poor and they eke out a living
pulling these RICKSHAWS where most of them go barefooted.

Efforts to ban these Rickshaws on the grounds that they are against
"Human Dignity" has been futile.
Reason: These Poor People themselves rise up in protest, as it is
their only means of livelihood.

https://www.dropbox.com/sh/d0gop789klq57i0/AAD19Ll9d3kl_n_teK3JgpVsa?dl=0

By the way, these were introduced by our British Rulers in Calcutta,
the then Capital of British India. They rode in style, even taking
them to their summer resorts up in the Himalayas.
Imagine the poor Rickshaw Pullers going up or down hill and the brute
force required.

Calcutta is now known as KOLKATA - Mother Teresa's City of Joy. You

The Great Masters of Street Photography like Robert Doisneau, Sam

semantics & a non issue

See some of the period photos here - of mind boggling artistic
interest & quality:-

Whoa John, easy Sir. Yes Spain is a pretty picture and a very

An American Doctor came to India for the Hip Replacement Surgery of

And Mr. Vajpayee a Hindi Poet wrote a lovely poetry "God bless me with
good health so that if someone knocks on my door, I can get up and go
open the door, instead of calling out to someone".
He has been calling out to some else to open the door for him. This
surgery failed.

By the way John, this Surgery is cheaper still in India with 5-star
comforts. And while you are here go on a spiritual journey with
Photography. Some of the Best Doctors in the World are Indians. And
should they leave Great Britain & Scotland the NHS will collapse.

Shutter firing erratic

2016-10-05 Thread Bipin Gupta
I have some similar set of shutter firing problems on both my K-5 &
the K-5 IIs:-
The shutter will fire twice with just one press of the shutter button.
I check my settings and it is on single frame only.

This happens randomly & for most of the time the camera behaves properly.

Another set of problems are: I am on TAv Mode and the wheels will not change the
Aperture or the Shutter. There is no Grip on the camera.

Battery Low warning will come on when I am damn sure it is full. I
shut the camera
& then turn it on. It now shows full charge.

No amount of Googling for solving these problems have helped.
So I live with it & will remove the battery + put it back on for a
temporary solution.

Perhaps some good folks here have a solution??

Photo students today - equipment

2016-09-29 Thread Bipin Gupta
Kids are very very smart today and you bet they do a lot of research
on the Internet before making a decision.
So all kinds of DSLRs do come up but "Mirror Less" are mostly absent
or extremely limited, and forget 4/3rd Systems.

Again Photography Students buy mostly pre-owened Equipment, so that
getting a hit on-line for 4/3rd or Mirror Less Cameras are very
limited as their sales and market population are limited.
And their prices are not cheap if they find one compared to a pre-owened DSLR.

Also one cannot buy the idea that students do not have knowledge of
DSLRs so they turn up in Class with a P - what with the abundance of
folks carrying DSLRs on our streets, TV, Paper or Magazine Ads.

There is a joke now that Photography Students will turn up for
Photography Lessons with their Hi Tech Smart Phones - well why not?

And here is "proof of the pudding" - my grand daughter is three & a
half years old - she insists I let her have my Pentax K-5 IIs to take
a "pretend" photo. She does not want her Mom's Hi End Canon P

Photo students today - equipment

2016-09-29 Thread Bipin Gupta
Hi Igor, regardless of the Photography Course or Class a Student will
always benefit with a DSLR or a similar advanced camera.
And why not when DSLRs are so cheap today.
In fact many Students buy pre-owened equipment which are literally
selling for peanuts if you look up the KEH website.

I bought my first SLR a Pentax K-1000 SE (made in Japan) in the late
1970s for some $ 258 from Oldens in New York. Jack up that price in
todays $$$ terms and you will see how cheap DSLRs actually are today.

I remember giving my Daughter a Ph.D student at an Ivy League School
in the US a Pentax MZ-5n with a Microscope attachment, so that she
could better use it in her re-search work in Genetics.
Oh my! How happy she was.

Just my 2-cents.

TAMRON 28-75MM F/2.8

2016-09-01 Thread Bipin Gupta
This is the finest zoom lens money can buy cheap.
Compact light weight and brutally sharp.
You can surprise women by showing the pores on their face at 200% blow up.

I bought it for some $ 417 from B some 5-years ago brand new.

Older lens might need some AF adjustment, so do test it when you
receive it from KEH.
You will not regret you decision to buy this lens.

Do note the focal lengths on an APS-C camera is a bit odd - 42 to 112 mm.
It is great on a FF camera.

Hello Dan, in Europe especially Eastern Europe many religious works of

You will find the statues of grotesque creatures peeping out from roof

Evil spirits, ghosts, werewolfs, dracula form much of the history of

first day review

2016-07-22 Thread Bipin Gupta
For Dave Re: 55-300 & the lenses that are under exposing on the K-5.

I am using the 55-300 WR lens on a K-5 IIs and find it pretty sharp at
the 300mm end. Yep, the problem is the huge length of the Lens barrel
at 300mm. Sure enough the overhang contributes to unsteadiness and
shake.
Even on a tripod you need to use it with Mirror Up, as it does not
have a Tripod Collar.
Just wondering if there is a DIY for fitting a Tripod Collar from Evil Bay??

As for the Lenses Under Exposing, check if you have Spot Metering turned on??
Could be also that these lenses have a sluggish Aperture. Hope you
have checked with some other Lens?

I will be in Thornhill, Ontario visiting my son and you are welcome to
join me for a shooting tryout - with lenses of course.
Thornhill has plenty of Photogenic places, including my son's big

2016-07-12 Thread Bipin Gupta
"Now all I have to figure out is why the hell was I using a disposable
camera and not my regular cameras"?

Simple John, you may be "Mothering" your regular camera - please note
my stress on "may be".
This syndrome afflicts many Photographers who fear scratching /
damaging their gear if they take it out for regular photo shoots.

So they go online for all their "photo shoots". They take out their
camera now and then. Polish it with a soft cloth, fire the shutter,
look at it and admire it, then put it away gently again.

In the mean time for "real" photo shoots they use their P or the
disposable camera.

Well John, I was one of them too. Till my daughter started teasing me
& I bought the weather resistant K-5 IIs.

First 24x36 digital

2016-07-10 Thread Bipin Gupta
Hello Bob, I saw the lot of photos you attached and the particular 1:1 crop.
The photos are simply wonderful, well composed and the colors pop out.
But this guy looks like a Lobster just "cooked" - a deep RED.

There is a tool in LR, Develop Module - HSL - for all the three,
Hue/Saturation/Luminance.
You click on the little faint Circle on the top LHS in the module.
Then move your mouse to the point
on the photo you wish to correct the Color or Skin Tone.

I clicked on the guys NOSE first with Hue. Left click & hold while you
move the mouse Up or Down.
You will see the color(s) changing. Do this with the other two till
you get a good Skin Tone.

Save your work. Here is the sample. Sorry for not taking your
permission before hand Bob.

Some of the were darn good. Kaufman Camera in San Mateo (25th Ave off

BREXIT ! & What have the Romans ever done for us?

2016-06-27 Thread Bipin Gupta
Hello Mark, when much of Europe were still in the dark ages, wore
animal skin and were wild, the Romans were a highly evolved, advanced
and a cultured lot - read civilization before Christ (BC).

They "tamed" much of "wild Europe & Britannia". Brought modern skills
and knowledge - astronomy, architecture, the arts & drama.

Of course the only other Civilization more advanced then was the Indus

BREXIT !

2016-06-24 Thread Bipin Gupta
Hello Steve, I have lived in Scotland while working for General Motors
in Motherwell near Ardrie & Peterhead up North near the oilfields.

The Scotts are "high thinking & simple living" type folks. Very
un-materialistic and most of them are minimalists.
Their stark lives are in contrast to that of the rest of the UK.

So I believe they think & respond with their brains rather than their
hearts. Their vote to remain with the EU is more to do with the
greater humanistic European thinking & democratic ideals, their art & culture.

Then also they get greater support & sympathy from Europe rather than Britannia.

For centuries the Scotts have only received humiliation & treachery
from the British. One ridiculous law was that a newly married
Scott couple had to send the bride for the first night to the British
Governor. What a shame.

Their dislike for the British is at once visible. How many of you know
that the Scottish Pound is a different currency from the British Pound
before the Euro??

What do you do to prevent fungus?

2016-06-23 Thread Bipin Gupta
Dear Igor, here are some of the things I do as a cheaper and cleaner solution:-
a) Store camera bodies and lenses in air tight Munition Boxes I picked
up for $ 5 each - (6) #s.
These are heavy ex British style steel boxes with a special thick
rubber seal.
b) I stuff large Silica Gel Crystals or 5 mm color changing silica
balls in home made coarse linen bags - 100 grams each.
Drop 2-bags in each steel box.
c) Bought Hygrometers from the Japanese Store DAISO in the Bay Area
San Mateo California - $ 2 each & from Evil Bay
Canada for $ 1.50 each + Free shipping from China.
I put one # in each box.
d) If the Hygrometer reading exceeds (40), the Silica Gel Bags are
replaced with fresh "dry" ones.
The exhausted Silica Gel are regenerated in my Italian Gas Cooker + Oven.
e) I check and calibrate the Hygrometers to ensure they are accurate
within + or - 5%. You can Google the methodology.
f) I ensure my popular and expensive lenses are taken out and used.
Alas lenses like the Macro and a few others hardly ever
see the light of day. So I take them out on sunny days and give
them a thorough look over.
g) All the munition boxes are stored in a GODREJ Steel Almirah. These
keep drier than Wooden or Cement Masonry Almirahs.
These Almirahs are made out of heavy steel sheet - size 8 H x 4 W
x 1.5 D Feet - so the foot print area is pretty small.

I have not felt the need for dry cabinets.

Back Pain . . .

2016-06-14 Thread Bipin Gupta
Thanks Brian. Ibuprofen is best avoided on a regular basis.
But if the pain is just too much you can take 2 x 500 mg tablets in a
day for never more than 4 to 5 days.

While living in the Middle East my Company owned a Furniture shop,
where I saw this Orthopedic mattress - upto 5 stars.
So we bought a five star and a three star mattress.

In severe early morning rising pain the 5-star mattress worked
wonders, while for general daily use the 3- star mattress was good.
Now mattresses sold in the Middle East and in India need to be turned
around every 3-months - Jan to March, April to June, Jul to Aug
& Sep to Dec - as these markings are stitched into the mattress.

I believe the same is not available in the US - I mean the turn around types.

Do look into your mattress Brian, as every type may not suit every individual.

In our villages, folks with back pain recommend sleeping on a hard
wooden bed with just a thick bed sheet we call a "duree" a multi color
woven stuff. But I certainly do not recommend one - each to his own
choice.

Brian, you have my personal guarantee you will be feeling much better
- short of a 100 % cure. Please do give it a try.
I am no doctor, just a humble human who believes in "Help Ever Hurt Never".

Back Pain . . .

2016-06-14 Thread Bipin Gupta
Hello Dear Friends, please don't let back pain take control of your lives.
I felt the same way as Brian when he says "It's worst first thing in
the morning - maybe I'll just give up sleeping..."

This is what gave me hope and a 80 to 90 % cure:-

a) As soon as you get up lie down flat on your back on hard ground.
This could be a carpeted floor or a divan. In yoga we call it the
corpse position. Relax. Tell your feet to be at peace - then your
hands, your chest and your head. Tell even the cosmos, the world
to be at peace - the birds, the trees, the wind, sex - OM Shanti Shantihi.
b) With your hands at your sides, lift your waist, using your feet and
head as fulcrums. If you feel comfortable you may pull your legs
in a bit as you raise your waist and a part of your buttocks + your back.
Then slowly lower your waist. Now synchronize your breath - in
when you raise your waist, out when you lower your waist.
Repeat this for at least 5 times. Do it at you own pace, relaxed.
Don't rush it.
You WILL observe your pain lessening.
c) Now lying on your back your hands by your sides, lift your left leg
up slowly. Try not to bend it into a bow. Hold it, then drop it
down slowly.
Next synchronize your breath - breathe in as you lift up and
breathe out as you drop your legs.
The trick is to not strain yourself, be relaxed all the time.
Repeat five times.
Now do the same with your right leg.
d) Now lie on your left side. Relax. Lift you right leg up slowly,
breathing in. Hold it, then drop it down slowly breathing out as you
do
so. Repeat five times. Now do the same with your left leg,
changing position to you right side.
e) Finally repeat serial b)

I reckon it takes about 15 to 20 minutes for this simple routine. It
should take 5 to 7 sessions for a good cure.
Make this part of your life as soon as you wake up.
Please do not laugh this off, as the East has shown the advanced
scientific world greater powers - the Power Of The Mind.
Give it a try.

May Peace be with you and may you be Blessed - free of all pains.

DVD ripper recommendations?

2016-06-04 Thread Bipin Gupta
Thanks so much Steve Sir. I stand corrected - on OpenSource ve
Freeware, Mac vs WIn Software + one that Converts One Video Format

Actually I used DVD Decrypter some 7-years ago to break into & copy
encrypted and locked DVDs.

Today for video conversions I use the Free HANDBRAKE, which I think is
pretty good & simple too.
Earlier I would use Creator NXT4 but it is rather expensive and I am
having font problems (microscopic fonts and message windows) on my 4K
Laptop with Windows 10. Even Adobe Photoshop CS6 (64 Bit) has the same
problem.

Hello Christine, a good DVD Ripper is DVD Decrypter. It was Open
Source Software and totally FREE.

The Developer was a young enthusiastic IT Engineer then, but he has
stopped all work on it and moved on.

You can still download it if you google. But no support will be available.

It is the safest and most powerful (no malware) and will even rip copy
right protected DVDs. If you can't find it let me know. I will then
post a zipped copy on Dropbox. File size is only 900 KB.

Transmission Replacement - Re manufactured vs Used

2016-05-29 Thread Bipin Gupta
Hello Mark, go with a used one canabalized from another Subaru. Don't
be afraid. I am an automotive Engineer, having owned a Subaru - albeit
one with a 5-gear automatic transmission - uses fluidics and a torque
converter.

I am not a CVT admirer as these generate friction losses and will not
accelerate your car to that spurt of power if you suddenly floor the
accelerator. Of course manual transmissions are best for positive
power spurts and great at maximizing mpg.

I have worked at General Motors in the US, Detroit Diesel Allison in
India manufacturing automatic gear boxes, Hyundai Motors, Nissan
Motors and Hindustan Motors as a Production / Industrial Engineer in
their factories. I retired as Advisor from Nissan.

I believe General Motors make the best automatic transmission in the world.

Just make sure the local garage gives you an assurance for atleast (6)
months on the canabalised CVT. This will force him to do some tests to
ensure that the CVT removed from the old vehicle is good.
25K on the odometer is a good omen. Go for it man.

Yep, all automatic transmissions are assembled in dust free rooms, as
are Engines. Let me assure you dust & dirt will not enter inside the
CVT as it is enclosed. Just that the local garage should take
reasonable care in removing, cleaning, inspecting and fitting it to
your car.

Good luck Mark.

Regards.
Bipin.

PS: Where are you based? I will be in San Mateo, the Bay Area,
California starting July 2016.

Street Tea Vendor

2016-05-09 Thread Bipin Gupta
Thanks Bob for the nice suggestion of photographing the Tea Vendor
from the front closer to his level.

We asked his permission to photograph him. His pose was very natural
as he was busy with preparing tea for other folks too.
In fact I requested one or two customers to please move away, such was
the frequency of passer byes on the pavement.

I chose the side and slight back position to expose for the entire
wooden platform, tea and the ancient kerosene stove, which would
otherwise have been hidden by the tin sheet wind cheater for the
stove.

Yes I could have stooped down or squatted on the pavement for a lower
& better vantage point.

This shot was on the busy broad Shyam Bazaar Business District of
Kolkata - see the taxis and the busses.
Kolkata is such a nostalgic mixture of East meets West - a magical
place for Street Photography in India.

Street Tea Vendor

2016-05-09 Thread Bipin Gupta
Shopping for marriage gifts we reached the stage typified by the Ad
"shop till you drop".

We noticed this Tea Vendor - our saviour. Seeing the hygienic throw
away earthenware pots and being aware that boiling hot tea will not
give us a "runny tummy", we stopped by for a refreshing cuppa.

That was the best tea we had, and guess the cost 8 US Cents (INR 5).
So we had two cuppas each. Even a 5-star hotel or restaurant wouldn't
beat this tea.

See the street shots here:-
https://www.dropbox.com/sh/3p13tahx90rfrnv/AADWbI01ez5AK8q41fKIJ4EXa?dl=0

It was then that I decided to take out the old Canon S90 for a picture
of the Tea Vendor.
Note: Left my pro gear home as there would be Pro Photographers and
Videographers at the wedding.

Comments welcome.

Regards.

PS: See his frugal setup as he sits on a bench 2 x 3 feet wide by the
roadside with the electric pole to hang other wares. See also
the ancient kerosene stove. But he does an awesome job day in
day out - come rain or sunshine.
And the sad part in our country is he remains poor - as my
daughter says "Papa don't drive down street vendors on price, as
they will never be rich to open a shop in a mall or elsewhere".

O! Canada!

2016-04-13 Thread Bipin Gupta
I live in Thornhill, Ontario, Canada, San Mateo in the Bay Area,
California and my native Bangalore, India.
So I am quite comfortable with Chains like Starbucks, Costa Coffee,
Lavazza, Dunkin Donuts or Canada's Tim Hortons.

The first time I tried a box of assorted Tim Bits at Horton's
(actually donut centre cutouts) it was like OK. A 2nd & 3rd time, a
big no no.
Their coffee is insipid, not soul stirring like Starbucks or Lavazza's.
Of course the prices are cheap and the place always full, so maybe
there is something good going for them.

But hey, Canadians are a lot different from materialistic /
individualistic Americans, so they get by with the simpler things in
life. Maybe they are a bit happier and friendlier too.

How can I say this with 120% certainty without sounding gross or Mr.
Opinionated? Well friends being a Non Resident Indian (NRI, working
abroad - the US, Scotland, Middle East, North Africa, the CIS, with
regular assignments in Japan, Korea, Europe) I have had to live on
Coffee Houses or fish & chip joints.

Congratulations & good luck Mark. Using a digital camera is instant
fun and for your students instant understanding of the fundamentals as

Text Books?? Just take you students out after the core classroom
session for a real time hands on experience.

My classroom is a photo walk Mark. Of course my classes are free
through the Bangalore Walks Society.

Bangalore is a green city on 3200 feet height plateau. It has the
Lalbagh Park, a mighty mix of a hill top, a huge lake where bird
varieties are plentiful, a glass house royal British style, a flower
clock, fountains, the rarest of tree varieties, plants and flowers -
literally a horticultural store house, jungle trails with park
benches, hordes of pigeons, a temple, Japanese garden. Flower and
fruit shows are held here regularly. And the colorful stalls a delight
to behold.
Why I mention this? 1) Gives my students a chance to learn and shoot
many genre of Photography - nature, birds, landscape, Macro, Portrait,
just about anything, as this place is a one-in-all.
 2) Perhaps you can find something
similar for your Digital Photography Classes.

PESO: Breakfast

My favorite fast food - breakfast or not - is bread shrimp. Here in

So we went to this food court in the Orion Mall in Bangalore. I saw a
sample of Breaded Butterfly Shrimps.
Butterfly Shrimps?? - what are these I asked the Manager, as the
shrimps were twice as broad on either side with the tail in the
center.

He said, we slice, split and spread the shrimps out and then bread
them. It was yum yum with the two kinds of sauces served with it.

Here are a sample of Breaded Butterfly shrimps.

Advice wanted for Antivirus/Firewall (Windows 10)

2016-04-05 Thread Bipin Gupta
Hello John, I tried all the Free AV stuff you mention + some more. So
I removed all of them including Symantec or something that came
bundled with my Toshiba 4K laptop running Windows 10. I also removed
Spybot Search & Destroy as I read online that it shuts down Microsoft
AV & Firewall.

So you guessed it right now, I downloaded the Free Windows Defender
from the Microsoft Web Site. Along with Windows Firewall that came
pre-loaded with Windows 10. They are both doing a great job.

Microsoft even added a right click link on any file to scan it for
viruses. And it automatically updates itself daily without fail.

Give it a trial without biasing yourself from internet reads.

I'm surprised at the pricing

2016-03-30 Thread Bipin Gupta
Not surprising, when you can clearly see coating deterioration at the edges.
In fact the flare given off by theses defects are clearly seen. Or it could be
Canada Balsam separation - normally starts at the edges. Possible to
identify only when one sees the lens.

Evil Bay is known to be notorious for passing off someone's defective stuff
under the guise of a "dumbo" seller, but this is KEH??

I would avoid such lenses as the defects tend to grow over time. I say this
with some experience on my $ 72 50mm f1.7 F lens bought from a mom &
pop store from the Bay Area California.

An odd K-5 problem

2016-03-19 Thread Bipin Gupta
Probably you know this very simple FF / BF Fine Tuning method:-
Put your camera on a sturdy tripod. In live view and a comfortable
magnification use manual focus to fine tune the focus on a suitable
object. Now change over to AF and let the camera auto focus on the
same subject.
If the lens / camera combo is perfect, that is there is no FF or BF,
then the lens focus ring should not move.

Depending upon the movement to the left or right, use the camera's
fine tuning function on a trial and error basis till there is no
movement of the focus ring.

Zoom lenses are particularly notorious and some may display both FF
and BF at various focal lengths. That is the cams in both the zoom and
focus rings have excessive play or a lens element is loose in its
mount causing it to move or jump.

I normally tune my zoom lenses at the "most used" focal length. So for
the 55-300mm it is at 300mm.
Some Photographers choose the "Buddha's Middle Path".
Thanks for reading.

$11 for a set of 5 x 100 ml Ink bottles.

There is also a DIY CISS System - see here:-

Don't be put off by people telling you that these will damage your
print head or the printer.
The trick is to never shut down the printer. Also take a test print
every week with all the colors in the text.
I use a Canon Pixma WiFi MG6470 All In One Printer. It uses both Dye
and Pigment based x 5 Ink Tanks.

Surgical Syringes with needles are available here in India for half a
dollar apiece from Pharmacies.

Re: K1 price in Australia

2016-02-22 Thread Bipin Gupta
What can we say about Australia and Australian Greedy Sellers mate?

That is AUD 700 over - outrageous.

And if you go by the trend for the Pentax K20D to the K-3 II street
prices fall by more than half.

The K-5 IIs fell to just USD 320 (minused all the Free stuff) form the
MSRP of USD 1200!!!

So for me the wait for the Black Friday / Cyber Monday / Boxing Day /
Xmas / New Year Sale is not too distant,
even up to circa 2017. By which time all the bugs would have been eradicated.

Good Luck mate.
