Re: Out of Officce e-mail

2021-12-23 Thread Adrian Godfrey
Out of office should be set up at the mail server itself, not in the e-mail
client. That said, you can do it with the "send automatic reply" filter action.
But that filter action will only work if The Bat is actually running.
Just don't set up any kind of autoresponders for any mailing lists you are
subscribed to. That will get you put on moderation at the very least and most
likely unsubscribed.

TheBat needs to run to send messages. So if you don't want to run your computer
all day long as long as you are out of office, then it might be better to setup
that mail at your provider.

Disadvantage of the whole idea: Each time a mail check happens, the *.TBB files
are updated and hence Dropbox uploads the whole file. On a metered connection,
this can become very expensive...

These are the learnings:

1.) The accounts on the different computers need to have the same name and
folder structures. (That's obvious)
2.) The drive letter where Dropbox resides must be the same on both computers.
(That's why it didn't work at first. Had to rename the drive on one machine.)
3.) Only one computer can run TB! at any time, and when you close it, you have
to wait until Dropbox actually updates all files from the first commputer to
the second.

Dropbox sometimes takes its time to propagate file updates. When updating an
account, I was surprised that the update was not shwon in the otehr computer,
then found this:

I also found the same "conflicted copy" for MESSAGES.TBB file. It took me a
while to figure out that the file was updated by Dropbox on the target machine
while TB! was open there. So, point number 3 above took some time.

I will now think of a good use for my new finding. :-)

Hello TBUDL,

So far so good: I pointed the Files & Directories for one account to the
Dropbox directory I had created for this purpose. Mail databases are
synchronised; I deleted a message in TB! on one computer, then started TB! on
the other, and the message is not being shown any more.

Of course, I did this with an account that I don't use any more. So I cannot
test sending and receiving, but I think it should work. I will create an
throw-away accout and give it a spin.

Mail database in Dropbox

2021-10-29 Thread Thomas Fernandez ML
Hello TBUDL,

I have TB! on two computers (PC and laptop) and always download seperately,
using POP. IMAP does not make much sense for me, as I am often in countries
with slow internet connections - let's not discuss this. I want to use POP.

I have a prefessional Dropbox account and use only a small amount of the space.
So my idea is now to move the mail database to the Dropbox folder, so it will
be updated automatically. In effect, I will have an IMAP effect including
flags, such as "read/unread" or "flagged.

If course, I will have to have the same folder structure on both machines. I
will move the database of the back-up machine (laptop) first, and then the
database of the main machine, as it will overwrite the files.

It sounds so easy and logical to me. Does anybody have any ideas why this would
cause problems? Any caveats?

TIA

Glad you got that settled. Just commenting because Google also stops "insecure
apps", and one has to go to the Google account and choose the setting to allow
insecure apps. Fastmail allows creation of app passwords, as well.

- Create a New group.
- DO NOT set to "Add items to the instant address popup"

New Mail Drop List Broken Again

2021-03-04 Thread Steven P Valliere

The drop-list of favorites from my address book that should appear when
I click the down arrow just to the right of the "Create a New Message"
button has vanished again. It has been replaced by the "Quick templates"
drop-down that looks EXACTLY like the one that displays from the REPLY
button. (See attached image)

It was working perfectly until I added a new person to my address book,
who is the first person in a new group.

When I set the group to "Add items to the instant address popup", the
drop list changed into the quick template list and I cannot get it to
go back the way it was.

I even tried deleting the new address and group (after unchecking the
"add items..." thing and trying that first) without success.

Is there a way to get the dro-list to show my favorite addresses and
groups again?

Please?!?!?

Thank you, both, for your suggestions. Before following any of that, I tried a
"tried and true" solution: I closed down The Bat and reopened it. That worked
like magic! So, I don't know what happened. The account was a
long-standing account and the one that I use most frequently, so it is not as
if there was an incorrect password. The status bar merely said that 0 messages
were downloaded. The log said "invalid pointer operation." I believe some
error messages did appear occasionally up when I was having the problem and
they may have said what the log shows (invalid pointer operation).

The best explanation is that my computer may have groaned under the weight of
too many open windows: probably over 50 at the time (I was mutli-tasking
and had a lot going on).

Anyway, TB is working fine at this time.

Thanks, again.

Do you gete any error message? The reason can be anything from wrong password
or a typing mistake in the server name. Once we have ruled those out, we can
look deeper.

Do you have the status bar enabled in your TB!? If not, please hit shift-crtl-L
while you are in the main window. Then check the account. After that, click on
the status bar (it's at the bottom), and it will open as a separeate window.
Copy and paste in your reply. (Hide email address etc if you wish.)

Hi,

Does anyone have any idea why mail, all of a sudden, is not downloading from
the internet mail provider that I use (Ionos, formerly 1and1.com)?I have
three accounts with Ionos and TB is able to download mail just fine for two of
them . But, just now, it is not downloading from the third account about a
dozen messages that are all from today. The incoming mail port, 110, is the
same for all three. And, I am using popv3 for the incoming mail protocol for

Thanks, Peter (and Stuart, who also responded), but I want to do this elegantly.     It is about having a "professional appearance."   I see the BCC trick all the time.  I know it works, but I have also received group e-mail where the address is to the group name and would like to know how to do that. Thanks.

Probably not very helpful, but since you mentioned "professional appearance": I regularly receive circulars from my embassy and also from different foreign chambers of commerce with their own email address in the TO field and everybody else in BCC. I do find that professional. - Just my 2 cents' worth.

I think that the Mass Mailing feature was designed for this.
However, it will show each recipient's address in the To: field rather
than the name of the Group.

I am using version 6.0.12 with an even more obsolete Help File, so
your mileage may vary. :-)

I've found that if you start a new email and place your cursor in the TO field,
the little address book icon appears at the far right of the field. Clicking on
the icon will of course open your address book. Select a group (folder) and open
it. In the column of arrows the second one down is a double-right arrow. When
you click on that double-right arrow it will place the name of the group
(folder) in the box to the right. However, you'll see that if the group has two
names as in "The Group", it will reverse the names as "GroupThe". Take that into
consideration.

I tried it with a folder I have called MISC and it displayed it in the right box
as "Misc_handle " so you'll probably have to play around to get it to
display correctly.

Good luck.

You can just use BCC instead of the To: field for the list. You may still have to put your address in the To: field though.

v9.2.2 does not delete mail on server as scheduled

2020-07-16 Thread Andrew Savchenko
Hello,

After resurrecting TB! by reverting back to v9.1.X I have noticed it
has started re-downloading all e-mails again. This is a well-known bug
and affects number of people at random. You can find more details at
https://bt.ritlabs.com/view.php?id=1779.

After logging into the Webmail interface, I have found that TB! wasn't
deleting old e-mails despite the option "Keep messages on server" being
set to 1 day.

MX is managed by "mailbox.org" which is rather well-known operator and
so far reported no misconfigurations on their side that would introduce
such issue (e.g. MTA reporting message as deleted and failing to
actually remove it from the base).

Feel free to mention support ticket #87842 if you experience the same.

Thanks for these instructions. Ultimately, I was able to figure out that I had
to wait for all of the headers to download before doing anything. However,
once I hit ctrl-2, I was unable to toggle off the tickmark on the "receive"
column for all 4000 messages. Rather, about 3200 would toggle off, and the
remaining 800 would have the tickmark remain. Ultimately, I downloaded those
800 message, which was a lot better than downloading 4000 messages!(And,
then, of course, I deleted the duplicates.)

By the way, my wife also experienced the same problem earlier this year for
several months. Ultimately the problem stopped just as suddenly as it started.

Unfortunately, becasue I am not a member of the beta group, your link would not
work for me. I had to log in to read what the link linked to and my regular
Ritlabs log in credentials would not work.

The real question, of course, if this is a known bug that has existed for some
time, wny does it still exist? Or, has it been known for only a very short
while?

Once again, thank you very much for taking the time to respond and explain how
to deal with this. I genuinely appreciate it!!

All the best,

Go to: Account / Dispatch Message on Server / All Messages
Wait for the mail dispatcher to show the list of headers, it can take
a few minutes. Then hit ctrl-2 to toggle the tickmark off the Received
column for all messages, and then hit enter.

Alternatively, you can let TB re-download all emails and then use
Folder / Delete Duplicates. But that will usully take longer.

It happens with random accounts.

Well spotted. but this is not the problem, it is the solution. See

Why is TB downloading all server mail and not just new messages?

2020-07-12 Thread Achdut18
I have TB set up to download mail via POP and leave mail on the server for 180
days. (IMAP doesn't seem to play nicely with The Bat, and, in any event, for
back-up purposes, I prefer to have my own copy of all e-mail so that it can
then be backed up through my own back-up protocols.)The reason for leaving
mail on the server is to enable another computer, which is used more as a
backup and is not used as frequently, to be able to download mail from the same
accounts. It also ensures that the mail is available for the cell phone. For
nearly 15 years this has worked just fine. Today, I am now experiencing a
situation in which TB is now attempting to download all ~4000 messages
currently on the server and not just the new messages, of which there are are
only less than a dozen. (I have stopped the process before it downloads more
than a few dozen, each time I try.) This just started happening today. Last
night the download process was working properly.

What is curious is that this only happens with one of three accounts that I
have on the same server/webmail mail host. These are NOT gmail accounts.
However, as an aside, I do not have this problem with any of the gmail accounts
that I also have.

What is causing this problem and how can I fix it? Sure, I can download all
4000 messages and remove the duplicates, but (a) that takes time and (b) if the
problem recurs I really need to known how to solve the problem

I notice on the toolbar, under "Account," there is a command: "dispatch mail
on server," and then there is a choice for either "new messages" (ctrl + F2)
or "all messages." (shift+ctrl+F2). Is it possible that this is the source
of the problem and that I unwittingly pressed "shift+ctrl+F2" at some point?
Would merely pressing (ctrl+F2) fix this problem?

Be careful if this is an IMAP account as the memo's seem to disappear after a

Is there a folder for filters? I have tons of them, because I have so many

Don't worry about .msi and .exe files - you can download those. What
you want are the files with messages, which are stored in .TBB files,
and maybe their indexes in .TBN files (but those can be rebuilt).

If you ever created a backup from within The Bat, those are stored in
.TBK files.

Restoring lost mail and application through data recovery

2019-12-20 Thread Achdut18
The unthinkable happened to my wife's laptop: sudden death of her SSD.
Unfortunately, we were blissfully ignorent of the fact that the external backup
was not backing up at all, and hasn't been for the life of this laptop.

We have sent the SSD to a data recovery service. That service requires us to
identify the location of folders and files that we want recovered.

On her laptop, The Bat likely resides where it does on my laptop: within the
Program Files folder. But, the mail folder tree appears elsewhere: under
Users\Avram\AppData\Roaming\TheBat!

So, what files/folders do we need to recover in order restore all mail on the
new SSDI? What file extensions should be looked for? I have nearly two
dozen subfolders into which mail is sorted.

Finally, in order to restore the application what is the file that should be
recovered? Is it the .exe file, or the .msi file, or something different?
I do have the product key, if needed. The lost application was an early
iteration of version 8 of The Bat! Pro.

Note that anything that can be recovered will be transferred to a brand new
SSD, with no apps on it, other than the operating system.

Thanks,,

Everything is Incoming Mail., as are all my filters. I forgot to mention it,
as it is my norm.

Sidenote:
I would like for TheBat! to handle manual filtering without HotKeys, or being
concerned with Read or Replied, but I have not seen that function. For
comparison, Eudora has a simple Incoming, Outgoing, Manual checkbox choices for
any filter. For manual you highlight the group of messages and then "Filter
Messages", only the manual filters are checked. One purpose of a manual filter
is a two-tier system, lots of stuff in to a combined box, and then filter to
the permanent individual boxes. Since TheBat! has virtual folders, there is
not a compelling need, but it is a clean and workable methodology.

redirect action is not limited to newly downloaded mail

2019-08-11 Thread Steven Avery via TBUDL
Hello The,

I have a puzzle regarding when filters are triggered.

There are 3 filters I use to trigger a redirect to mail to a Runbox
account.
When this happens, an email is created in the Outbox. (Can I automatically
delete the new email .. this is not very important, but I am curious.) These
are the only filters in my system that reference the Runbox acct.

=

The three filters I have (Account--> Sorting Office/Filters) have the
following result actions:

Redirect to (my Runbox account)

And they are marked as follows.

=

Active - checked
Manual - blank (unchecked)
Hotkey - blank

Options
This filter is active - Yes
Use this filter for manuel refiltering - No
Continue processing with other filters - Yes

Send generated Messages
According to the Account Settings

===

My thought is that these filters should only trigger on the download,
which comes from my Verizon-AOL box.

Yet in fact they often are triggered on any regular activity I do in
TheBat!, leading to hundreds of generated new redirects.

Is this a glitch, or am I missing something in how TheBat! operates?

Thanks for your thoughts and assistance!

Steven

Assuming you are using POP to download your messages from your Gmail
account, within The Bat! go to Account Options | Transport tab |
Receive Mail section and add "recent:" (without quotes, and with no
space after the colon) to the front of your user name. Gmail should
then not download messages more than 30 days old. (Make sure to add it
only for the POP settings, not the SMTP.)

For more info, try googling something like "gmail recent mode".

Windows 10 has a nasty habit of resetting file associations to the
"Microsoft defaults". I am having this issue with PDFs. First they get
reassociated with Edge, Look for EdgeBlocker - this stops Edge
starting, but then they get reassociated with TWINUI after some
unpredictable time of setting it back to what it should be. That works

It is not deprecated, they are different protocols. Simple MAPI allows to send

It is better to select just "The Bat!", not "The Bat! Simple MAPI 64-bit".

The problem is that even under 64-bit Windows, the Mapi Stub DLL calls
fixmapi.exe which is a 32-bit application and expects the final MAPI dll to be
32-bit, that's why "The Bat! Simple MAPI 64-bit" wont' work under Windows 64.
But in case of applications call it directly (I don't know such), we have also
implemented "The Bat! Simple MAPI 64-bit".

Fair enough. What I had read said Simple MAPI was deprecated in favour
of Enhanced MAPI.

In my Windows 10 its called "default programs" or "default apps"
depending which screen view I look at (in case this helps anyone
to find it).

I don't see MAPI under "Choose applications by protocol" but can
see The Bat! and the two "The Bat! Simple MAPI" entries under "Set
defaults by app".

Is it best to select "URL mailto protocol" and "MAPI Send email command"
under The Bat!, or under "The Bat! Simple MAPI 64-bit"?

No, Simple Mapi is just an interface which allow applications like MS Word,
Internet Explorer, Adobe Reader, etc. to send email messages. They still use
Simple Mapi.

An application loads mapi32.dll from Windows system directory, which is just a
stub, that, in its turn, looks for a default Simple Mapi handler via registry,
at HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Clients\Mail

I thought when a application tries to find a DLL it searches in the
current directory before the windows system directory. My The Bat!
program directory contains tbmapi64.dll but TB! does not display the
"Install The Bat! as the simple MAPI request handler" button.

It is The Bat! installer (MSI) that sets up the Simple MAPI handler. Moreover,
since Windows Vista, the Windows System folder is by default protected, so this
button would have been unable to copy the DLL handler there.

I have all tickmarks marked on the file associations, and none of them
mentions MAPI. I also don't have a long button that says "Install The
Bat! as the simple MAPI request handler"; my long button only asks
what to do when TB! detects that the file associations have been
changed by another software.

This was only for the first-time connection, as all sorts of folders
were downloaded. I found the setting to ignore these, and on the next
connection, all folders that I did not want were deleted from my PC
again.

So, all is fine! Thanks for the tip with the URL.

TB! checks mail every 10 minutes as requested, but I cannot find the
setting for "combined send and receive" as I have with POP accounts.
So I need to hit "Send" manually every time I write an email. Did I
miss something?

It's an NGO, they don't place ads on their mail server. Somebody
probably told them Exchange is the way to go, and people who use
Outlook have no problems. I do believe that TB! can handle this
protocol too. I just don't know how.

I asked for a POP access. Instead, they gave me these for an Exchange
client:

Select Microsoft Exchange Account;
Domain: \thomas.fernandez
Exchange server: xxx.org.uk

Domain? TB! does not ask for that...

They gave me these details:

Select Microsoft Exchange Account;
Domain: \thomas.fernandez
Exchange server: .org.uk

I tried this in the account that I had set up for Exchange Web

So I created a second account, this time using MAPI (MS Exchange), and
TB! complains with this log entry:

!21-Feb-17, 10:02:41: FETCH - MAPI.MapiInitialize

With public wifi access points they sometimes call this a "captured
portal". Thecloud.net is a common example encountered in UK pubs and
cafes and some railway stations. I've not personally encountered this
for email access, the closest I have seen is requiring that you check
for incoming mail before being allowed to send ("POP before SMTP").

And just maybe you can find the POP/SMTP/IMAP servers with a bit of
googling (or searching user forums), unless they are actually not
enabled.

Isn't the point of webmail-only services that all records are on their
servers, so that they can serve advertising when you want to read
messages (or sell information to the highest bidder)?

https://webmail.xdomainx.net/ews/exchange.asmx is the server I had to
define when I set up my exchange account two weeks ago . It worked
some month ago but (as you can read n the beta-list) in november I had
to remove this account from TB because of constant crashes. The
account was set to get new mail every 60 min and I could not change
this fast enough. Actually I use a new EWS.dll Maxim sent me and this
behaviour persists. (But in defining the account newly I could set it
to prevent check at start-up)

When I first defined the exchange account in summer, TB was able to
find the exchange server itself, although the TLD is different from
the TLD of my address (.de <-> .net). Perhaps that is due to a server
config.

> I also saw that there are two options when setting up an Exchange

I used EWS because MAPI doesn't work for me.

I get this with some wifi accesses. You have to start a web browser
first and do that login. Afterwards your email client should work
normally.

Some providers try to make you use the webmail. But if you can find
the right person, they can give you a normal POP access so that you can
use an email client for that email address rather than web browsers.
Webmail is a pain as you have to cc yourself / forward / redirect to
a normal email address for every message, otherwise
you have no record.

Thanks, but what would it look like if you use TB! with an Exchange
server?

I also saw that there are two options when setting up an Exchange
email account in TB!:

Exchange Web Services
MAPI (Microsoft Exchange)

Which is for what?

I know nothing about exchange servers, but "https://x.org.uk;
looks like a website (possibly webmail interface?) rather than a mail
server.

Two wrongs don't make a right. But three lefts do.
