Hi Folks,

How about some information just to get this list moving again :)

Could each of you post some basic info about your political stance?
Such as, in favor of armed conflict when
or, Democracy only works when
or, communism in the USSR failed because...

Perhaps phrasing the comments as an "introduction"... you know, tell a
little bit about yourself (nothing too personal :)) and what you might be
looking for in this discussion group?

How about it? anyone up for this? :)

Actually, that sounds like an excellent idea! It would prove that they

Well, for the most part it went as expected... but my memory of the

to begin attacking Bush... but Gore claimed in the Debates that he wouldn't

I just saw on TV that my local county gov't is outlawing smoking in Public
Parks! Now, I quit smoking 11 years ago so it doesn't really affect me but
it seems a little ridiculous to be outlawing it in a park, dontchathink?

After all, the reason they claimed to have outlawed it in office buildings
and restaurants was because of the second hand smoke being confined in
enclosed spaces smoking in public parks can't be any more dangerous
than the air polution that's already out there, can it?

hmm. must be an election year :)

Ok, another question: What's IR ?

And I think that 'war' can be many things... from massive conflict
involving the loss of life of millions to 'so called' "police actions"
which affect the balance of nations.

Well, it seems that the eGroups version of this list has the 'political
opinions' portion fairly well covered... maybe we can get this list more
interested in theory? Perhaps you can lead the way :)

Quite right... Most likely Clinton wanted to leave with something more to

Hi Jill,

As far as I'm concerned, the group already voted... remember I started this
version of the list and asked everyone to move over? It received some
activity but the majority wanted to stay at the eGroups site so that's Ok
by me :)

...and they have taken on individual identities... I'm sure we can figure
out a way to keep them easily distinguishable, right? The two lists have
slight variations in the Subject tag (The eGroups on has [W&P] and the
Topica one has {W&P}... not a great difference but is it enough? hmm, I
guess I'll change it to {W+P} that should work :))

If that's Ok with the members of this list, I'll change the Subject Tag
later today... Make your wishes known... although I don't see any big deal
with the change, it might upset some who prefer to keep their Filters set
on the subject line :)

What says the List???

Hi Folks,

I'm told that the Topica 'outage' has been fixed (at least temporarily) and
that the messages should be flowing again...

For those of you who might not have heard Topica performed an upgrade
last weekend and turned up something unexpected... as a result, they lost
about 75% of their database... this was coupled with a hardware failure :(

They've replaced the hardware and copied the databases from Backups but
full functionality isn't expected for another couple of days so the web
based access might not be available but the emails should be moving again
:)

So, let's get this show on the road! Can you believe it?! Still no results
on the US Presidential elections :)

{W&P} Khadafi - Libya

Just wondering... did anyone hear that Khadafi offered up a solution to the
recent US election problems?

Supposedly, he suggested (strenously) that who ever is deemed the 'winner'
that they make the loser their Co-President with the presidential duties
split equally between them, otherwise they'd be risking Civil War! (since
the election was so close, he expects those who are dissatisfied with the
outcome to take violent action :))

So, the questions are:
Where does it say in the US Constitution that there can be Co-presidents
with presidential duties equally split? I must have missed that when we
studied the constitution back in college :)

Should such a suggestion be taken seriously? Why? why not?

Given the state of affairs in Libya, what do you think prompted such a
comment from him? Libya isn't exactly known for its notions of
'equality'

I don't see why you would consider it 'off topic'... seems to me that
collapsing governments might be 'topical' for this list :) (what kind of
jokes?? :))

Israel certainly has had an 'exciting' history, though brief compared to
the rest of the region... How much peace-time would you estimate you've
had since Israel's inception? (percentage or years, either way :))

One thing I was surprised at during the Gulf War, "Desert Storm", half a
dozen years back... when Iraq started lobbing bombs in your direction, it
was surprising that Israel acceded to the UN request to remain on the side
lines... I guess if it had gone on much longer that wouldn't have remained
true...

From: Jackson Jeffrey
I saw a congressional scholar on C-Span last night say it was entirely
possible to have Bush as President and Leiberman as VP. Not the same as
what K/Q said, but it's close.

That's weird... but how likely do you Really think it would be? do you
really think they'll let it get to the point where it becomes a
Congressional decision?

I wonder what the chances are that they'll end up doing a complete
recount of All the votes in FL? at least those which were discarded as
unreadable/unacceptable

Personally, I think they should have a re-vote... but I understand that
option isn't available :(

RE: {W&P} Make it a rule ....

2000-12-06 Thread John T

Make it a rule you have to look into the enemy's eyes before you try
to kill him... take away all 'distance' weapons - keep it hand to hand

How about making those "West Pointers" really use those swords? :)

Have a ritual combat to decide the issues? Satisfy the 'bloodlust'
while at the same time reducing the incidental loss of life to civilian
bystanders :)

In the wars of today, there is no 'clear' victor... that's one of the
reasons for the continuation of old grudges, the "leaders" don't get into
it and both sides can claim victory since neither side inflicts significant
damage on the "leaders" abilities to function...

Why not make it a requirement for any future wars that they exile the
leadership of the loser's side of the wars? A little island where no one
would know to look for them? and where they couldn't cause any more trouble
:)

Sure wish they'd make up their minds :)

The other day the FL courts said "recount all the undercounts in all the
counties"... then yesterday the US courts said "STOP!"

Does anyone have any idea on what's going on? Eventually the 'electors' have
to be selected and sent to the 'college'(?) to officially select the next US
Pres.

I wonder what the results would be if we had a complete re-election process?
If all the votes were tossed out and a new election was held? How many
Bush/Gore supporters would change sides? I'm sure there are die-hard
supporters on both sides but there have to be quite a few who are fed up with
all this BS!

Well... that's enough from me for this morning :) Comments?

I'm looking for some opinions on "nationalism".

It seems that just about every country can point to some point in their
history and say "The world wouldn't be the same if
hadn't happened here!"

Since we have a fairly wide representation in this list's membership of the
world's countries... What would you consider to be some of the "major
contributions" of Your country? And do you feel that others have a tendency
to discount it or ignore it entirely?

How far back in time do you have to reach to find the "major contributions"?
The invention of 'fire'? Building the pyramids (either Aztec or Egyption :))?
Great artwork? Inventions? Philosophy? etc etc etc

And how does this color your perceptions and the perceptions of others?

I know, pretty broad... but if you let yourselves go with it, I'm sure we can
generate some interesting discussions and everyone is free to branch off
with new subject lines, of course :)

Let the discussion Begin!

Perhaps the humor I used in the message was misconstrued... Ok, so I don't
think we should look for nationalism discussion on who first found Fire :)

How about the Germans with the first rockets (or the Real first rockets

Or who developed something that really changed the world? Many of the

Or the Industrial Revolution? The Renaisance? Or, conversely, who do you

Europe hadn't wasted hundreds of years in the Dark Ages?

can modify your subscription to Digest or "Web only/no email" from the drop

Yep, interesting.. I've
seen it before...

Two points, (I'm sure
there are others, though :))

While the US planes are
most frequently flown, the British also have quality airplanes... second only to
the US (at least according to the PBS show I saw the other day... they're coming
out with a new Jumbo jet in 2006)

And while I don't know if
any outside countries came to our assistance for the SF earthquake, I do know
that Canadian firefighters (as well as others) have come to the US's assistance
to fight the wildfires which affected us this past year civilian volunteers
which makes it all the more appreciated!

  From:

  I
meant to convey that the Canadian newspaper article was in relation to the
nationalism thread, but I forgot.  Anyway, that's something I'm proud
of...America tries to help.  I understand that our interests are usually
somehow served as well, and like everyone else we've had some dark spots in
our history, but I think the intent is not always completely
  self-serving.

    And not all the
help that America provides is government sponsored... we have plenty of
volunteer and emergency services which provide aid.

    Some of that aid
could be better spent at home, though...

Also, I've just written a paper on the impact of cookies, web bugs and
online profiling upon privacy in America, including a bit about the direction
of legislation to protect privacy versus protecting the right of the business
to collect and catalog information in the public domain.  It's partially
relevant to this list as privacy is a cornerstone of American politics, but
it's about 28 pages or so in Word so I don't want to post it unless there's
interest.  Let me know if you want to read it, and I'll email you
personally.  If there's enough interest I'll post it.  I found the
research extremely interesting, and it may spark a new
  thread!

    It's a shame that
Topica doesn't have a "Files" feature, you could upload it for anyone who
might be interested. Are you a member of the eGroups version of this list? You
might consider uploading it there... as far as I can tell, most of the members
of this list are also members over there... but here they don't get flooded by
messages and they can post their opinions without worrying about getting lost
in the flood (the other list has been known to have over 100 messages/day
  :))

    If you are a
member you can upload it to that Files area and provide a link to it for
others to use to view/download it.

Anyone have any comments on the new movie: Thirteen Days ?

It provides a "new viewpoint" about the Cuban Missile Crisis - portrayed from
the viewpoint of one of the aides involved, or so I've heard :)

Hi Folks, just to pick up on an old thread about gov't providing aid in
times of crises... anyone know who's providing aid in El Salvador - the
local news is, of course, telling about all the aid the US is providing...
but I'm wondering about which other countries are joining in the effort?

Did Clinton Profit from the pardons he issued?

Maybe not directly, but his brother in law sure did but I'll give
Clinton this much, at least he told the in-law to give back the fees (after
he was found out, of course :))

Details available at:
http://dailynews.yahoo.com/h/nm/20010221/ts/clinton_pardons_dc_24.html

And what gives with all those pardons? Giving 140 pardons at the end of his
term just because he no longer has to worry about being re-elected sounds a
bit obscene, to me at least There sure seems to be something wrong
somewhere :(

I usually frown upon copying entire articles... usually a brief intro
followed by a link to the page is preferred... however, this site didn't
have a specific link to this article :(

Guns & Violence, War & Politics... all wrapped up into one article...

Any comments on the history of violence this article represents? Have we
learned any lessons from history? or are we doomed to repeat ourselves (in
the US and elsewhere)?

The US Civil War may seem far displaced in time but the politics behind it
are as pertinent today as they were back then... both in the US and
elsewhere... Can you compare something in today's political arena that
reflects events leading up to the history below? or compare the impending
loss of that history with something in the past?

What would have happened if today's "gun control" factions had limited the
citizens during this time period? Perhaps limiting firearms to only those
'registered' with the local constabulary? Requiring all others to make do
with knives, axes, or maybe bow & arrow?

Please read the article below and allow your imaginations to wander... then
start writing your responses :) (And, Please, post well thought out
responses not knee-jerk reactions which stifle discussion).

Civil War Battlefields Said Harmed

By JOHN HEILPRIN
Associated Press Writer

WASHINGTON (AP) - Urban sprawl, road-building and storm erosion are
endangering 10 of the nation's Civil War battlefields, including historic
Gettysburg, a preservation group said Tuesday.

``It's important to save these sites where the sacrifices of the Civil War
occurred,'' said Jim Campi, spokesman for the Civil War Preservation Trust.
``You really can't get an understanding of what happened there without being
there.''

The group said the most endangered battlefields in addition to Gettysburg
are at Allatoona, Ga., Brices Cross Roads, Miss., Fort Fisher, N.C., and
Harper's Ferry, W.Va.

The remaining five are Loudoun Valley, Va.; Mansfield, La.; Raymond, Miss.;
Stones River, Tenn.; and The Wilderness, Va.

Sites were included in the study based on geographic location, military
significance and the immediacy of current threats. ``Each of them is
threatened in some way, but the most common denominator is some form of
sprawl,'' Campi said.

At Gettysburg, the trust said a controversial new visitor's center could
become a magnet for chain restaurants and stores that encroach on the site
of the crucial July 1863 battle and famous address by President Lincoln
dedicating a national cemetery.

One exception is Fort Fischer, where the main threat is not from humans but
from hurricanes wearing down its fragmented remains. North Carolina recently
has helped, however, by spending $1 million, the report said.

Congress in 1991 created the Civil War Sites Advisory Commission to identify
the most important and threatened battlefields. It studied 384 sites and
listed 50 with the most urgent need for preservation. But after issuing its
findings in 1993, the commission was dissolved.

``Since then nothing has been done to follow up on that report,'' Campi
said.

At least 71 of the nation's most significant Civil War battlefields already
have been lost, according to the National Park Service's American
Battlefield Protection Program.

Since 1990, the program has spent at least $4.4 million for 191 Civil
War-era preservation and enhancement projects

But the money has been spread thin, with an average award of $22,000 to each
of more than 100 historic battle sites in 21 states and the District of
Columbia. And a June 1999 status report found many states are protecting
only half or fewer of their battlefields adequately.

To help pick up the slack, the trust in the past 10 years has spent tens of
millions of dollars preserving 11,000 acres that it either maintains itself
or has donated to the National Park Service or to a state for safekeeping.

Last year, it spent about $5 million for 2,000 acres of battlefields spread
among Georgia, Kentucky, Mississippi, North Carolina, Pennsylvania,
Tennessee and Virginia.

Putin's webcast missile warning

President Vladimir Putin has delivered a stark warning to new US President
George W Bush over the dangers of pressing ahead with the "Son of Star Wars"
programme.
Mr Putin, speaking during a historic live webcast on BBC News Online, said
US insistence on the missile programme would jeopardise the entire
international system of arms control.

That's what was making headlines... they said that the spy population has
reached Cold War levels... unfortunately, I've been working OT for the past
week and haven't had much time to check anything... I was hoping that some
of the folks on this list would have some info to share...

And now everything seems to be swept under the carpet.. I haven't seen nor
heard of anything since the news article last Thursday (at least I think it
was Thursday :))

But the 'spy thing' is still going strong... technology that can be stolen
sure costs less than technology which is licensed...

I still remember when the first low-end Soviet LED watch was released
it was an almost exact duplicate of a Timex - the only difference was that
it's circuits were mirror imaged... as if they were copied from a magazine
photo (and at the time, Timex had an advertisement which included a photo of
their circuit board :))

Of course, that could also have been some misinformation released to
tarnish the Soviets... who knows what was true and what wasn't... I doubt if
anyone could keep it all straight :)

  Any comments on 'disinformation'???

Not exactly 'new'... the word has been around for quite a while.

disinformation = providing false/misleading information (information
designed to make your opponent believe you have a strength or weakness
heretofore unknown)

Commonly referred to as 'propaganda' but it goes a little beyond it :)

However, it has been used by businesses to curtail industrial espionage -
as do governments. Provide specific disinformation to suspected spies, if
that information shows up elsewhere you know where your leak is.

{W&P} Challenge to the List!

Hi folks,

I know this list is billed as the 'low volume alternative' to the other
list but we really need to get some activity going :)

So here's the Challenge:

I'd like to see as many as possible (everyone? :)) post at least 4
separate messages dealing with 4 different "controversial" war/politics
topics. If you duplicate someone else's topic, that's Ok as long as you
have a new slant on it.

Then when we have a few posts going, try to respond to the other posts
with your own viewpoints on where the political situation might take us
or them or whoever...

A little give and take would be nice :)

If you have to play "devil's advocate", feel free to do so... but let's
get some activity going!

I'm heading out to work right now so I hope to find a few good messages
when I return... I'll be thinking of a few posts of my own to add when I
get home.

Your participation would be appreciated!

Will the European Union ever become one collective country?

I know that it is often represented that Europe votes in a block,
however, what would happen if it actually solidified into
one country with one elected government?

Is such a political evolution possible?

Got this from a web site... anyone know if there's any truth to it? The
link at the bottom doesn't seem to have any info related to the article
claims
===

Lawsuit charges Arafat with genocide, murder Terror victims say
Palestinian leader committed "crimes against humanity"

Meanwhile, at a press conference to announce the suit, Meir Indor, chief
of the Terror Victims Association, said the action gives the
international community "a chance to put Arafat where he rightfully
belongs in prison for mass murder, and not in the parlors of Europe
receiving prizes for peace."

Africa's new bloodstained gems
Children dig for tanzanite, coltan in dangerous mines

By Anthony C. LoBaido
© 2001 WorldNetDaily.com

While human slavery is a fact of life in African nations like Mauritania
and Sudan, Tanzania now is emerging as the latest center for the
exploitation of child labor.

Today, young children are forced to work in the country's mine,
harvesting the valuable mineral resources of tanzanite, coltan and
diamonds. Tanzanite, a semi-precious, purple-blue gemstone unique to
Tanzania, was discovered for the first time 24 years ago by the Masai
tribe. Its uniqueness and stunning beauty make it as sought-after and as
valuable as diamonds. The resulting tanzanite mining rush lured
thousands of Tanzanians and refugees from neighboring Congo, Rwanda and
Burundi.

"Tanzanite … is torn from the volcanic rock of Mount Kilimanjaro in
Tanzania by the tiny hands of African children," reports Dutch
journalist Adriana Stuijt, a former anti-apartheid activist who
maintains an anti-censorship website. Stuijt describes children working
under the "most abominable mining conditions of the 21st century,
digging away for coltan, the black mud of the Congo so essential for the
world's cellphone industry."

The United Nations has condemned the child-slavery practices at the
coltan mines and blames the mines for fueling the civil wars plaguing
the region.

Reportedly, Amnesty International has also been petitioned to probe the
dreadful working conditions and child slavery observed in tanzanite
mines located in Arusha, Tanzania.

"American jewelers import tanzanite to the tune of $300 million a year.
Ninety-five percent of this is exported illegally from Tanzania via
low-paid 'informal' miners. Many are children who are digging inside
dangerous, unsafe homemade mineshafts for as little as $2 a month, or
even just food handouts," Stuijt told WorldNetDaily.

"Do the American women adorned with these stunning and unique gems even
know that most of these were torn out by African children's hands,
digging and hacking away at the Tanzanian volcanic rock – often forced
to live in deep, unsafe mineshafts where many have already drowned
horribly?"

"Until recently 'Tanzanian Rush' miners used mainly picks and shovels to
dig out the gems," reports the South African Afrikaans language
newspaper Beeld. "Individuals and groups of miners dig life-threatening
shafts as deep as 300 meters, usually without any kind of supports or
ventilation. ... On April 12, 1998, at least 100 miners drowned in such
shafts, which had flooded during a terrible storm. And in 2000, flooding
again drowned many."

Beeld also reports prostitution, drug and alcohol abuse are rife; AIDS
is a major problem; and there is no healthcare or sanitation.

According to the paper, a trade union representative confirms that
thousands of children work in the mines because they can move around so
much easier in the narrow shafts.

"Parents encourage their children to work there because there are no
schools near the diggings," Martha Bitwale of the Tanzanian women's
mineworkers association told Beeld.

There is one exception to Tanzania's cruel trading game: A small
proportion of the total tanzanite payload, $18 million worth, now is
being mined safely and responsibly using modern safety techniques
established by African Gemstones Ltd., or Afgem, a high-tech South
African mining company that doesn't employ child labor.

Afgem is a South Africa based company with offices in Johannesburg. The
company received its mining concession from the Tanzanian government in
mid-1999. Since January 2000, Afgem has mined 4,216 tons of tanzanite
ore at its site at Mererani, northeast of Arusha.

Despite having the government's blessing, Afgem encounters stiff
opposition, as Beeld reported in August:

"At the foot of Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania, a South African mining
company is mining a unique gemstone amidst great animosity from
surrounding communities. At first sight, the mining compound looks like
a military base in former South West Africa. High security fencing,
razor wire, uniformed guards, guard dogs, guard towers. All for very
good reasons ...

"It's the old African story: Foreign investments and developments aren't
welcomed by everyone – even if the mining company was invited an

Why is death necessary as a form of political statement?

Why should anyone have to die in a world where the technology is
available (or becoming available) to relieve the harsh conditions
humanity has put up with for its entire history?

Would a less harsh environment reduce the attraction of supporters of
men like Bin Laden?

What would happen if the standard of living of the Third world
countries was raised? Would there be less or more violence?

This is the only thing that I could find that even remotely address what you
asked about. Where did you hear this at?

=

Hi LG,

I received a private email from a member who didn't want to post... a
confirmed lurker :)

They mentioned John Walker, too... so I guess that's the individual who is
supposed to be charged with treason.

Who has a good definition of treasonous acts? Do John Walker's actions fall
within a definition of Treason? He apparently was working against US
interests... but was it treasonous?

So exactly what constitutes Treason and was John Walker a Traitor?

Well, everyone's entitled to their own opinions, aren't they? Perhaps
you'd care to refute his claims?

No matter, he's been removed since he's only trying to promote his own
agenda rather than interact with the membership. If he'd interacted,
then his postings would fit within the guidelines for this list.

So? Anyone have anything 'controversial' they'd like to discuss?

I seem to recall reading in the National Enquirer (or similar rag :))
that Bin Laden has granted them an Exclusive Interview and will be
Revealing All !

In addition, he is supposed to be applying for US citizenship so he
can run for President! He has a few legal issues to clear up, first, of
course... but how about him for US President in 2004 ?

{W&P} China laying an egg???

2001-12-27 Thread John T

Just read an interesting article... seems that China is building a new
opera house of unusual design... it will look like a huge egg :)

I hope nobody starts making yokes about it :)

Space-age opera house still on, says China

The Chinese authorities are to go ahead with building a controversial
space-age opera house in central Beijing, despite a storm of protest
from local architects and academics.

The French-designed building is expected to look like a huge egg covered
with glass and titanium and set in a lake. Audience members will enter
the building via an underwater tunnel.

Someone wrote me off list and suggested that the current crisis has
brought the world closer to the brink of nuclear war than at any other
time in history... what do you think?

If it does happen... who do you think will throw the first warhead? who
do you think will join in the retaliation? or will there be retaliation?
 how far might it spread?

Looks like there's still hope left in the world...just found this
article...

---
Israel pulls out of West Bank towns before US envoy arrives

Israel has withdrawn from two West Bank towns and lifted some
Palestinian travel restrictions as a US peace envoy prepares to restart
truce talks.

Anthony Zinni will again attempt to implement a peace deal drafted last
year by CIA chief George Tenet and accepted by both sides.

And another article.. in keeping with the post I sent the other day
dealing with the possibility of nuclear war

---
Indian prime minister says war with Pakistan 'not a must'

The Indian Prime Minister says war with Pakistan can be avoided if the
nuclear-armed rivals can solve their differences through diplomacy.

But he says Pakistan needs to prove it is serious about cracking down on
terrorism.

Vajpayee spoke out before leaving for a South Asia summit in the
Nepalese capital of Katmandu. It will also will be attended by
Pakistan's president General Pervez Musharraf.

He said: "War is not a must. Efforts are being made to avoid war through
diplomatic channels. If that succeeds, there will be no need to opt for
other alternatives."

Hey! what's up? Last month there were over 500 messages posted and now
Zero?

Where'd everyone go?

Has there been a complete lack of political incidents worthy of
discussion?

Is the world at peace? Is there no political scandal worth discussing?

Who can tell me why name of the lead character for the New Star Trek
"Enterprise" series changed? (a hint: The last name is Archer and they
changed his first name to Jonathan, same first initial :))

If you get that, how about telling me why his actions were so
scandalous? (I only know Who it is, now Why he's such a scandalous
scoundrel :))

2002-06-26 Thread John T

Yep! They've finally done it! The Pledge of Allegiance is
unconstitutional

Here's the link to the CNN article detailing the court decision handed
down today!

http://www.cnn.com/2002/LAW/06/26/pledge.allegiance/index.html

Anyone else think this decision will be overturned?
