Re: [Elecraft] K3 firmware preview: Much-improved receive AF bass response
Another improvement to the K3 makes me a happy man. The K3 is so good that I am considering the sale of an Icom 746 PRO to purchase a second K3 for hauling around. This time perhaps I will install the two meter option. Thank you Elecraft for encouraging the feedback and for being patient when your users get impatient. I am looking forward to the P3 panadaptor. 73 Doug __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
Re: [Elecraft] K3 firmware 2 years on and still much to do
Perhaps an external control pod might prove a help. I hate having to hold my hand across the keyboard and key to get to the memory push buttons. Yes I know one should use an external controller for the rig but this should not be necessary. Oh but I love the K3 but it needs a control pod. 73 Doug EI2CN -Original Message- From: elecraft-boun...@mailman.qth.net [mailto:elecraft-boun...@mailman.qth.net] On Behalf Of juergen piezo Sent: 19 September 2009 11:42 To: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net Subject: Re: [Elecraft] K3 firmware 2 years on and still much to do K3 firmware 2 years on and still much to do? I still dont own a K3. I just cant bring myself to buy the K3 because of its front panel layout and its operation. Although I would very much like its receiver performance. I have used one at a contest station and all that I can say is that I would not buy one until a new front panel layout is designed. The band switching, VFO management, mode switching and many aspects of its front panel design needs a rework. Most of the contest operators that I know seem to own a FT2000, they will all acknowledge that its no K3, however they all feel the same as I do about the K3 and its ergonomics. Most of us are just not portable operators, so dont need small size 12 volt radios. There are many good radios that would be a good front panel design model for the K3a. The FT950, FT920, Icom 737series, TS850 etc all have a very workable ergonomic front panel layouts that are easy to use. The FT950 is so well layed out and very attractive and it would be a good one to copy for a new K3 front panel. If the K3 is so modular, why would it be so hard not to offer a bigger box with a new front panel? There are many off the shelf 19 inch rack boxes that could be used with a new front panel styling. I would suggest that a new K3 panel with built in P3, power supply and 200 watt PA stage would be a big hit. Everyone seems to be so over the moon with the K3's small size, I must be a freak with alien genes to not like the radios front panel layout and operational ergonomics. The firmware feature list or lack of progress I can live with. However a awkward panel layout and poor ergomics thats carved in rock I cant really live with. When I used the K3 all that I ever used was the band switch, volume and RIT control thats all, just like a Mil-spec radio. It was very hard to do otherwise, so I probably missed a lot of the K3's potential. I too live in hope that a new K4 is coming! I could even live with a K3 junior with one receiver and a new front panel design. Hi Larry, I am sorry that some of my e-mails may have added to your woe as it is certainly not my intention to do so. I enjoy the comments regarding the K3 and desired improvements but as for getting into arguments over the K3 well it is not worth it. Re: [Elecraft] K3 Rx Antenne K9AY
Frank, I am unable to fully understand your e-mail. I use a K9AY with my K3 for 160 Meters and also listen with it on 80M and 40m, which are bands I am not active on but monitor from time to time. I find the K9AY gives me an average 15 dB front to back ratio on 160M. I have not noticed too much of an improvement in Signal to Noise Ratio but the antenna is a great help in contests when working the western hemisphere as it attenuates our fellow EU stations. I also use it in listening to stations in other directions and find the front to back a help. As I live in a rural location it may be that the improvement in SNR is not as great as it would be in a more built up area. You need the converter board in your K3 to have a separate receiver input. I assume you have this. You may need a good separation between TX and RX antennas to use the K9AY for break in operation. In my case the separation is 60 M and I have no problems. Hope you find the K9AY works well for you. If you have any further problems perhaps you might try to better explain them. All the best with luck I will work you in CQWW this weekend. Re: [Elecraft] K3 - 100 vs 200 watts
Gentlemen, I am happy with the K3 in its present configuration that is either a 10W or 100W output transmitter. I only run a fraction of the output when using my Acom 1000 amplifier. The radio is very lightly loaded. A 200W K3 would be bigger and require a larger power supply and would be of no interest to me at all unless this was all that was on offer. Keep the K3 price down and let people source their amplifiers separately. I suspect this is the better philosophy if one wants the export market. The K3 has the best RX, can drive any amplifier and it sells at a competitive price. Now if we are talking external amplifiers well that is different. Boy is there a lot of competition out there. With respect I doubt many people will purchase 250 Watt amplifiers. A good kit for 800 Watts and another for 1600 Watts might be a seller. No one does a kit amplifier these days as far as I know. Please ignore or forgive me if my thoughts differ with yours. I am only an old dinosaur. One thing for sure I would not want Elecrafter to hurt itself with a product which does not sell. I may yet better learn how to squeeze the maximum out of my K3. Perhaps an improved manual is needed? More guidelines could be provided but of course this will all change with the next upgrade. Such is progress which most K3 owners are delighted with. To me this is an excellent thread and may clear up confusion. My profession is Electronics Engineering and I can indeed learn so also might a Medical Doctor, Truck Driver or Old Age Pensioner. Re: [Elecraft] Raised K3DSPUPGD price?
Hi All, I feel that Elecraft is allowing us to update to the latest version of the radio and these suits me fine. My costs will include VAT (sales tax) at 21% plus shipping to EI land so it is not cheap but nor was the K3 until you compare performance and price with other manufacturers. This is an option and not required. The radio was not so much deficient but improved! Perhaps the W9AC modifications are the way for most to go. Maybe Elecraft feels that selling the filter board on its own will cause too many people problems with installation. Surface mount is a different game and with so many of us old goats not able to see and with wobbly hands might Elecraft be protecting themselves from ourselves. [Elecraft] Disgruntled Europeans
I do not know about the problems the excellent JA operators may have in importing equipment from Elecraft directly but I do find this information interesting. What I can tell you from personal experience is that many EU hams look at prices in QST and CQ and just dream. It seems that one can purchase Japanese made radios in the States for the same price in dollars as one pays in Euros or Sterling. Okay we have VAT rates (Sales tax) that run between 15% and 22% depending on one's country but this does not come close to explaining the price differentials. I believe that being able to purchase the kit K3 directly is a great plus to Elecrafter sales in the EU. True one is a bit exposed as to service but if one has built the kit then individual boards can be returned for service. The K3 is small and not that heavy to ship back if needs be for that matter. In EI if a piece of equipment breaks down it might need to be shipped off for repair to another EU country and that might not be so inexpensive. I believe that Elecraft is going to see a steady increase in world wide sales as more K3s are around for people to try. Of course the weak dollar is not hurting matters. The US needs to increase exports and the combination of performance and price competition is going to help K3 sales. As all hams know we live in a small world. Re: [Elecraft] Elecraft K3 versus Yaesu FT-1000D
Stan and Company, Your points are well made Stan. I have inadvertently raised stink on the TenTec site questioning whether the development of this fine radio was now over. There has not been an upgrade now for over a year. I made the mistake of comparing the performance of Elecraft and TenTec and some of my fellow OII users took real exception that such a comparison should be voiced. Still this is one way progress is achieved. See what the other guy is doing and try to do better. Neither the K3 nor OII are perfect but they are both very good radios. If you compare the input of the users, designers and owners to the reflector then no one beats Elecraft. I would like a larger K3 but then again the small size and light weight of the K3 makes it possible to ship with relative ease from factory to overseas users. The kit approach is great in that it familiarizes us with the radio and allows one to more easily make hardware modifications. It also reduces import duty and cost. I have questioned before if a remote pad similar to the one sold by TenTec would make the radio more user friendly for some. If you are not using a logging program tied into the radio then punching the memory buttons is a pain for contest operation. I am now finding that I like the remote tuning knob on the OII pad in that one can set the radio back perhaps at an elevated position and easily tune. I believe there has even been some mention from the mother ship that such a pod is being considered. These days I am using the OII for a while waiting receipt of my DSP up grade board. This will not ship to me for another two weeks and it appears the ship date will be five weeks post my order so be prepared for a wait if you order this board. My plan is to finish off all upgrades and then install the second rx and antenna tuner purchased this past summer. I must learn to work faster. Guys lets not be too critical of those who criticize the K3 but be gentle. Thankfully Elecraft has a limited number of products which they continue to support in a far more active way than any other manufacturer. I too have sometimes thought that a larger radio would be nice but then there are advantages to the present size. There is no harm in our passing on dreams but lets be thankful that the K3 continues to develop. It seems Paul that you and the rest of us are largely in agreement on this point. I find the K3 pretty much the ideal size for my purposes. The front panel is not cluttered but comprehensive enough that there is little need for daily changes to menu items. In the future, hopefully we'll see detachable front panels where a small or large stand-alone panel format cold be purchased as an option, depending on user operating conditions. For base use, a panel loaded with extra buttons could be used to bring secondary functions onto their own button (e.g., A=B and SPLIT). Then, when its time to operate portable, detach the panel and take the base K3 unit into the field (or mobile) using a smaller panel. In the case of the TS-480, Kenwood accomplishes functionality of all controls, menus and buttons on one 57 kbps serial buss. This makes it easy for its owners to detach the control panel and plug it into a serial-to-USB port so that the TS-480 panel can be plugged right into a notebook PC. It's great having access to a real panel with VFO to spin while operating Internet remote. In the case of the K3, I haven't looked much at the panel connectivity but it should be possible to simply detach the K3 front panel and insert a black-faced front onto it with say an RJ-45 for the convenience of Ethernet cabling. The cable would then connect on the other end to the control panel size of your choice or to a serial-to-USB converter (as in the TS-480 example) to take a panel with you and run remote. I have to believe that if demand were strong enough, Elecraft could quickly whip-up an optional black panel for the K3 as well as a choice of small and large stand-alone panels. The small panel could leverage what's already available on the current panel. I'll go on record for ordering the first complete set! [Elecraft] RF gain, preamp and attenuator
I am a new owner of a K3 and also run an Orion 2 which is IMHO a fine rig. I like its larger size and remote pod for use in contests. Put this aside I need to know how to drive the K3 but am influenced by the O2. For the O2 I keep attenuation off, preamp on and ride the rf gain and I do this for all bands on CW including 160 M. Sometimes for contest work I throw in some attenuation though it does not seem to be required. Is it the consensus that for the K3 a similar approach is used or am I right in gathering that many of you disable the preamp and introduce attenuation as well as throttling rf gain? Both rigs allow many options and learning to configure them for ones style of operation is critical. [Elecraft] K3 All Mode Squelch
Hi All, I thought this was an April fool's joke and deleted all references to this topic. Wow do I have respect for Elecrafter! Thank you for such a tremendous turnaround rate on improvements! I look forward to your future panadaptor which I hope is stand alone. I remain a dinosaur who does not wish to tie a PC into his rig but I like the idea of a panadaptor even one such as on the Orion 2, which is still my main rig but then I am only learning to use the K3. I too for what it is worth would like to see an external pod to trigger CW and voice memories and perhaps though less importantly to tune the rig. The K3 is a very small rig and one cans, no doubt, during the heat of a contest hit the wrong button to great distress. With the O2 this would be hitting USER 1 button beneath SEND 3. The pod is a very useful accessory. Keyboard, pod and paddle are in line for contest operation and except for search and pounce the rig itself is not touched. I bet we like the taste of the new fish dishes served up by Elecrafter. I use to be a cynic and protester; what is happening to me in old age? Thank you to Elecrafter. 73 Doug EI2CN __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
[Elecraft] k3 external speaker mono v stereo plug
Ken, Thank you for your warning but I am now wondering if it applies to later SN K3s. Mine is number 2574 and sure enough I have been using a mono-plug but in the Config Menu under SPKRS 1 has been selected. The manual indicates a preference for stereo plugs but clearly states, If you only have a mono plug, set CONFIG:SPKRS to 1 to disable right-channel audio. A comment from Elecrafter might be in order to fully clear this matter up. In the meantime my external speaker is out until a stereo plug is wired. Thank you for the warning. 73 Doug __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
Re: [Elecraft] K3 band buttons
Gary and all, I believe your idea has merit. I am a K3 Novice predominantly using an Orion 2. The remote Pod of the O2 is a God Send for contesting. What I really like about it is being able to access the CW SSB memories without the need for jabbing at small buttons on the rig during the heat of a contest. I turn my pod sideways so as to keep the tuning knob out of the way. For my purposes a simple pod without many buttons or tuning encoder is more useful. I do not need the remote tune or band change buttons which are on the TT remote pod they are confusion in a contest. I once heard of an operator who used the pod to tune from an easy chair. This I can identify with though the urge has never struck. Elecrafter would want to spend some time coming up with a pod which will best suit their wide user base. We are fortunate to have a manufacturer of strictly amateur radio equipment owned and run by hams! The service and attention is just amazing. 73 Doug EI2CN -Original Message- From: elecraft-boun...@mailman.qth.net [mailto:elecraft-boun...@mailman.qth.net] On Behalf Of rfenab...@gmail.com Sent: 05 April 2009 08:04 To: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net Subject: [Elecraft] K3 band buttons FWIW I think Elecraft would achieve a lot more if they made a Keypad Interface with Programmable Keys to enable users to create their own unique way of operating. As I see it the radio simply does not have the number of available keys/knobs to be able make a lot of features easy to use. I just upgraded to the latest FW and lo and behold the Squelch operation appears to be a long press of the Config button followed by a twiddle of the VFO, if this is the way it works I am not impressed, the knob states SQL/RF so I did not expect to have to use a button as well. I find all these two button presses becoming tiresome and I worry that the K3 will become to demanding to use and end up being relegated to second place in the shack. I don't want a PC running my radio and if I did I would have bought a Flex for example. I hope Elecraft are thinking about these issues as I believe that as time goes by the K3 will become just another menu driven radio that is too difficult to use daily. I am the proud owner of a newly constructed K3 number 2574 as well as a TT Orion 2. The O2 came with a RS232 cable which I have used a number of times for updates of the firmware. Has anyone used the same TT O2 cable when updating their K3? I hope to install the 100 Watt amplifier this weekend and then plan to update the firmware and also load my CW memories. Wayne and Company, Thank you so much for listening and improving the AGC Most K3 Contesters will thank their good fortune for their K3 and the amazing work you good people put into tweaking the K3 into an even better radio! It is my feeling that of late the radio of choice for use in contesting is the K3. I do not wish to take anything from any other aspect of the hobby but if a radio is going to go flat it will be happen in CQ WW. The new manual will be welcome and I admit to liking the idea of a stand alone panadaptor - wow. The keyboard would also be great. We are all peculiar but I do not want a PC permanently connected to the K3. It is my practice to disconnect the antenna and perhaps unplug the K3 supply when not using the radio. A PC connected to a hard wired LAN in our house leaves me vulnerable to thunderstorms. I don't find the K3 complex. As a matter of fact, I rather enjoy playing with the new features. One doesn't have to upgrade the firmware if he is happy with the radio as is. Well put! We are blessed and I am still very much in a learning mode. I also find listening to myself on the monitor a bit awkward because I hear my voice by paths other than that of the radio. Re: [Elecraft] K3 SSB Monitor Suggestion
One of the complaints regarding the Orion 2 was that it took an engineer to use it. A good friend was advised by a top operator in ARRL that he might better consider a PRO 3 than the Orion 2 which was too complex. The idea that the Orion 2 was to complicated is a falsehood but the rig took time to learn. This is also true for the K3 and maybe even more so. I noted in the past week a new K3 being sold because it was too complex for the owner. I have at times wondered why my K3 was not transmitting only to find that inadvertently some menu item had been changed. We have all seen similar problems on this reflector. Elecraft has done a fine job but it is hard to satisfy us all and I sympathize with the design dilemmas Elecrafter face. Re: [Elecraft] Uniquely terrific
Dick, You are so right! Elecraft has a great and unique products backed by service which is unbeatable. It is fun to feel part of the design team! These radios are selling world wide despite all sales being direct. I actually feel this latter policy is an advantage as Radios in the Ireland and the UK sell for nearly 80% more than in the US. One can pay shipping, the required taxes and still come out ahead of the game. The modular approach to the design also helps as one can build their radio up gradually to the level of machine desired with a more moderate cash flow. I think these guys have got it right. It is amazing to see the number of K3s that are being used around the world despite having to order from California. Maybe the smaller lighter radio also has its advantages when it comes to shipping. I suspect the kit also helps - it did in my own case as the reduction in price of the kit is magnified by a drop in taxes. Elecraft has done this (IMO). They have made the hobby technically better without the artifactual warts. There are many who would disagree with this. Whatever happened to the pink noise response experiment or the LPF that was being tested a few months ago. I will agree that Elecraft have pushed the RF boundary but to date audio hasn't been their thing and here I'm not talking audiophile rubbish just good sound. Unfortunately that is the interface with the human operator. I find myself drawn more and more back to the K2 and if I was closer to the action I might even consider parting with the K3. [Elecraft] KDVR3, wintest and Microkeyer II
Has anyone married the three of these so that the KDVR3 is used for voice memory rather than the MicroKeyer II. I prefer the KDVR3 to the MK II. It would be nice to be able to use the function keys to activate the KDVR3 while connected to MK II. I do not want to be connecting and disconnecting the MK II all the time I change from a CW to phone contest. This is one of those issues which microHAM does not address and I have yet to find the answer from Win Test. Too many different manufacturers are involved but maybe one of the people on this group has already solved this problem. Thanks to Tony for his e-mail regarding the N1MM. 73 Doug EI2CN I use the KDVR3 with N1MM. This allows me to use N1MM F-keys to select the 4 KDVR3 memories. I like this setup as I don't need to connect audio to the PC audio card. This way no issues with hum pickup and adjusting audio levels. And the audio coming from the K3 whether using the mike or KDVR3 sounds the same. __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
Re: [Elecraft] KDVR3, wintest and Microkeyer II
Lu, So far I have only used the MK II and K3 combination in CW contests. In the past I used the Orion II and its internal DVK rather than the DVK in the MKII. I find it easier to get my levels correct with the internal DVKs and I like the sound from them. I have now a second MK II on my K3 and had hoped to use the internal DVK of the K3 with the keyboard function keys but they are dedicated to the MK II in my present configuration of K3, MK II and Wintest. The internal DVK of the K3 is almost useless to me in a serious contest as the buttons are just too small for a quick stab. The Orion II has an external pod which allowed me to access its voice memories. I suppose that I will just have to use the MK II DVK and forgo my preferred option of using the K3's internal DVK. I did not express my problem very well the first time and hope a better job has been done this time. Of course I change from CW to phone contests merely by specifying a CW or phone contest to MK II. I have had both K3 and Orion II now for nearly eighteen months. I prefer the K3 in most regards but the TenTec remote pod is a God send for me in a contest. In fact the OII is miserable to use in a phone contest without the Pod as one can easily hit a user profile button and change the entire radio configuration. The K3 does not suffer this problem but the OII and remote Pod is easier to use in a phone contest. The K3 has a much larger message capacity for DVK than the OII so this is another plus for Elecraft. I am a convinced K3 fan and am just trying to find the best configuration for using it in contests. I suppose I will need to use the MK II voice memory which is set up but which does not sound as agreeable to me as the internal K3 DVK Maybe more experimentation with MK II levels will convince me otherwise. Thank you for your telling me of your experience. I see the problem better now. 73 Doug EI2CN -Original Message- From: elecraft-boun...@mailman.qth.net [mailto:elecraft-boun...@mailman.qth.net] On Behalf Of Lu Romero Sent: 01 June 2010 19:09 To: elecraft@mailman.qth.net Subject: Re: [Elecraft] KDVR3, wintest and Microkeyer II Doug: Im curious... What are you connecting and disconnecting on your microKEYER II to switch from a CW to a Phone contest and why? Is this because you are using the KDVR3 and not the built in sound card to send the messages? I switch from a CW to a Phone contest simply by typing CW or USB (LSB) on the entry window of N1MMLogger. There is no plugging and unplugging needed of anything in the MKII. Of course, I use the MKII built in sound card to send and record messages. Ive used WinTest with my K3 at NQ4I in the last WPX SSB and didnt have to unplug or plug anything to switch from Phone to CW (I played with the rig on 160CW before the ssb contest. Nice antennas at NQ4I for 160 grin). I do not use the K3 DVK, however, I use the MKII to generate DVK, and it works perfectly, no issues, no distortion, no problems. Just make sure that the levels on the hardware pot are set correctly. Once set, they never vary from place to place and from N1MM at home vs. WinTest at NQ4I. I can also pre-record messages and recall them by operator on N1MMLogger, plus record on the fly with both N1MMLogger and WinTest, but I have never tried to recall DVK's using OPON on WinTest. It works just fine using Control-O (callsign) on N1MM. -lu w4lt- K3 # 3192 Date: Tue, 1 Jun 2010 12:35:37 +0100 From: Doug Turnbull turnb...@net1.ie Subject: [Elecraft] KDVR3, wintest and Microkeyer II To: elecraft@mailman.qth.net Message-ID: 764fe0684e0747acb3d2c3a73c58b...@doug1 Content-Type: text/plain;charset=us-ascii Has anyone married the three of these so that the KDVR3 is used for voice memory rather than the MicroKeyer II. Re: [Elecraft] Regarding the K3 and high QRN levels
Dear OMs and YLs Sometime this forum produces some fine insights and guidance. This and the recent answers to the use of selectivity and noise controls have been helpful. Perhaps once the K3 design stabilizes, the manual can be upgraded to include more assistance but then I hope the K3 continues to progress and maybe half of us never carefully read the manual. It would also seem that we all have our own approaches but this forum allows us to learn from each other and perhaps prompts Elecraft to make adjustments - God bless them. TenTec has similar problems with newbie users learning to operate the radio and I believe the updated Omni was a partial answer for these users. A friend was even recommended the use of the Pro 3 over the Orion II as some thought it too difficult to operate. The K3 is a rig you grow into and grow up with. It can be used as an appliance at first and then one starts learning. A process which does not stop as the radio continues to be improved. Thanks to all of you for these questions, answers, insights and observations in this web based classroom. 73 Doug EI2CN __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

I don't know who wrote it since there is no name on it, but the 250 Hz filter does not fall apart at -25 dB. The results shown are exactly what you would expect for a well-designed receiver with no signal at the input. The author of this study doesn't state the conditions of the K3 such as band, preamp status and antenna connection, but I will assume no antenna connected with the preamp on. If you look at the first plot on page 3 labeled Study of Inrad 400 and 250 Hz Filters, you will see a broad shoulder at about 30 dB down that the author is concerned about. This shoulder drops off at 100 Hz and 1100 Hz due to the DSP filtering. So let's look at what is causing this. There is no signal into the K3, so all of the noise is internally generated. At 600 Hz, the noise is coming from the preamp and is then filtered by the 250 Hz and 400 Hz roofing filters. The shoulder is caused by the internally generated noise after the roofing filter. The noise from the preamp is dominate, so that is sets the noise figure. However, if we made it even more dominate, so that the shoulder was lower, we would reduce the dynamic range of the K3. Receiver design is a tradeoff so that you create both minimum noise and maximum dynamic range. If the author had coupled a noise diode to the input of this K3, he would have found that the shoulder would disappear because he now had a noise signal into the K3 much stronger than the preamp. My advice would be to disregard this report because the measurements were not made in such a way as to accurately determine the response of the K3 filters. -John KI6WX Both you and Ed raise good points. No intent there -- I agree that the so-called 250 Hz filter is slightly more useful than the 400 Hz. My real objective is to get Inrad to clean up their act! BUT -- take a look at the data in this link. Lots of food for thought. There's something different about the K3 Sub-RX, and the Roofing filters seem to fall apart below about -25dB. [Elecraft] [k3] ERR BP2 Message
Gentlemen, I am getting an ERR BP2 message on my fully loaded K3 which includes a sub receiver and one BFP3 general coverage module on the main RF board. The firmware is the latest but this problem existed on the previous firmware as well. Present Firmware Loaded: MCU 03.97 FDF 01.09 DSP102.58 DSP202.58 DVR 01.03 Tapping any switch removes ERR BP2 message and no other message appears. If I turn the K3 off and then back on the error message reappears. At the same time the BPF3 seems to be working fine. I can tune down onto the Medium Wave or AM band and can tune onto the shortwave bands and the main receiver seems to work just fine. If I go to Config Menu and try to indicate that the BPF3 is not installed, not inst the K3 continues to operate outside the amateur bands but I do not get the ERR BP2 message. Turning the radio off and back on makes no difference as the ERR BP2 message is then removed and the radio continues to work.I have the BPF3 set as not inst for the sub RX through out all of this and the Sub RX is not being used during any of these exercises. The single BPF3 is mounted on the main RF board. The K3 is kit built.I would rather not have to remove the BPF3 as memory tells me it is beneath the sub receiver and removing the BPF3 would be a pain; besides the BPF3 seems to be working just fine. Otherwise the K3 is working fine on CW and SSB. I can not remember when this error message first appeared and I am remiss in being sloppy about this. Can any of you good people throw some light on my problem? Does this mean that a package of Alkaline batteries with which the battery terminals are covered with plastic or pasteboard as originally purchased would be okay? For the record, no one asked me to turn anything on. -john W4PAH Hi all, I recently made a trip to Anchorage, AK for work and decided to carry on two 17Ah SLA (sealed lead-acid) batteries to support my operations. Some folks on the list said don't risk it and ship them ahead of time. Others said, tape the terminals and pack them in your carry-on. Since I had done this in the past (with 7Ah batteries) I decided to risk it again. I found a web page on the TSA's site which was helpful and printed it out to carry with me. http://www.tsa.gov/travelers/airtravel/assistant/batteries.shtm This ultimately proved helpful during my departure from RDU (Raleigh Durham Airport) on Saturday morning. The TSA agent (who had 1 stripe on his shoulder-boards) told me that unless I had an electric wheelchair, I wasn't allowed to carry on these batteries. I explained to him that I had taped the terminals and packed them in bubble-wrap to protect them from damage. I showed him the web page which I had printed out which stated that you must Place each battery in its own protective case, plastic bag, or package, or place tape across the battery's contacts to isolate terminals. Isolating terminals prevents short-circuiting. I had followed all of the rules. He brought over his supervisor who had three stripes on her shoulder boards (I have no idea how many you can have, but I saw folks with one, two, and three). She read my printout and looked in a manual she had. After reading it a few minutes she let me pass. I thanked the one-striper for his patience (and tried not to do so in a sarcastic or snarky way), and re-packed my bag. Success! On the way back from my trip, I was again pulled aside and another one-striper unpacked my carry-on and ran everything through again. He said, Oh, you must be an amateur radio operator. We had a short conversation. He was impressed with the radios and stuff I had. ;-) No questions at all, he just wanted to make sure the SLA batteries weren't concealing something in the x-ray image that could've been below or above them in the bag. So, I think in the future the lesson learned is to be prepared by following the rules for protecting your batteries from the TSA's web site (tape over terminals to prevent a short, pack the batteries in bubble wrap or a bubble-wrap envelope), printing out the page from the TSA's web site, and be patient as you go through all levels of TSA employees until you reach someone who actually knows the rules. 73 -john W4PAH P.S. I wasn't able to do much operating at all while in Alaska, unfortunately. [Elecraft] [K3] Always power cycle after Configuration Menu Change
Gentlemen, I recently wrote if asking for help regarding an error message ERR BP2 which indicates a KBF3, General Coverage Option problem. There was nothing wrong with the K3; it was my fault entirely. Not having used the KBF3 in two months I forgot that it was in my case located in the sub receiver and had inadvertently reconfigured the K3 to indicate it was in the main receiver. I then corrected the Configuration Menu but found that the general coverage feature still did not work. I ran several tests to prove there was a problem with the KBPF3 and for some of these tests switched the KBF3 in and out for before and after results. Well this does not work because I was not giving a five second plus power off period after each change. It appears that like many computers the K3 only recognizes changes to its configuration at power on. This has been mentioned before on the reflector but my memory is perhaps suffering from age - God I hope not the consequences are not nice. Not a big issue since only slight moves around my 700 Hz sidetone are normally required. Just wanted to point out that the loss of SSB power does not seem to occur on every K3. - Richard - HB9ANM -- View this message in context: http://elecraft.365791.n2.nabble.com/Firmware-4-18-APF-adjustment-using-shif t-control-tp5711904p5712716.html Sent from the [K3] mailing list archive at Nabble.com. __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

Re: [Elecraft] Lock P3 frequency range independent of K3
Hi All, This is an aspect of the Orion II which beats the present K3. When one tunes the VFO the display remains steady for a period of time and the cursor moves across a frozen display in sync with the VFO. Once one stops tuning the VFO the display is no longer frozen. It does help in manually tuning the VFO rather than using the cursor to move to a different point in the displayed spectrum. I would like to see this change introduced. It would seem much easier if tuning the K3 just moved a marker across an unmoving P3 display. My thoughts are towards operating next Field Day, where I might set the P3 to display, say, 7.025 through 7.075 KHz. Of course there would need to be a provision for re-centering the P3, most likely to a round number, not the actual K3 frequency. For example the P3 could re-set its center to the nearest frequency marker at the top of the the P3. As an example, assume a P3 set to a span of 50 KHz, where its 10 markers at the top would then be spaced 5 KHz apart. Assume a K3 is tuned to 7.048 KHz, and the re-center button is pressed. Consistent with the suggestion, then, the center frequency of the P3 would snap to 7.050 KHz, and display a span from 7.025 to 7.075 MHz. Besides the pile-up value another post suggests for this mode, I see it equally valuable for contests and for looking for an ongoing QSO. 73 Gary K6kV __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

Re: [Elecraft] K3 ssb sound
Mike, What sounds good seems to be very personal. When I use to monitor the TT web site there were those who were critical of the OII sound. We are all different. I go for a very low tone on CW of 320 Hz others prefer 500 to 600 Hz. I would say that the K3 is an excellent value radio and maybe overall the best radio on the market today. This does not take away from the competition, which also make good radios. You are purchasing a radio with backup and ongoing improvement from a most unusually good company run by hams that only make amateur radio equipment. They are not pulled off amateur products because of a military or commercial product whose customer has mucho clout. You are purchasing a modular built radio which makes service easier. You are on to a winner. Re: [Elecraft] K3 Need for advice was; (More Thorough Documentation)
These tutorial meetings could be organized locally by clubs or groups of users on an ad hoc basis. Good documentation is still needed though as many live in distant parts and the class just held will do the fellow who purchases two months later no good at all. Documentation is always there to reference. The good people at Elecraft are then in a tough spot because they improve the K3 and then need to look to documentation updating, which is not a trivial task especially if properly indexed and cross referenced. I find myself in sympathy both with Elecraft and those who would like improved documentation. I probably will purchase a new manual this summer for though I can print one out with ease; a properly bound manual is a worthwhile convenience to me. Though a fond user of Kindle, I am not enamored of reading material from a computer screen and of course I can print it but that manual is a great help for quickly finding information in. I hope the people in Elecraft do not feel that they are being beaten on over this issue. I think it clear that they have a most loyal and very largely satisfied customer base who are salesmen for their product. Re: [Elecraft] K3 ESD
Kjeld, I used a table away from electrical appliances and covered it with tin or aluminum foil. I had an antistatic wrist strap which I connected to this large piece of foil and worked in this manner. Ideally you would connect the foil to a ground through a 1 MegOhm resistor. Note I did not power the K3 or any test equipment up while working atop this foil otherwise one would possibly cause a short or worse electrocute oneself. Generally the larger the area of conductor the less the difficulty with ESD, at component level the risk of ESD damage is greatest, at board level it is considerably reduced and at assembly level it is further reduced. You do the above at your own risk but it worked for me. Wear cotton avoid synthetic clothing and stay away from rugs or carpets. Brendan, I agree with you entirely regarding the appendage /QRP. It is a pain in the ass and I do not like needing to add it to my log. If I go QRP and I am thinking of it the difference is that I have good antennas. Some less fortunate hams are very limited in their antennas and operate higher power levels to compensate. Re: [Elecraft] P3 wish list items
I believe Stewart has two good suggestions. Let me also say that I am very pleased with the latest changes to the P3 firmware. I often use my P3 on TB to find a clear spot in the frequency range of those calling a DX station during split operation. Sometimes I place myself on the very edge and sometimes there is a valley in the middle into which I slip. The P3 also proves useful in observing the commercial (?) signal sources on TB some of which seem to be operating spread spectrum. The P3 provides information at a glance which allows me to better position myself on the band. Thanks for producing such a fine instrument and thanks very much for the updates which have greatly enhanced the P3. For me the big advantage of Elecraft is that their products are near the top end to start with but then they continue to improve in significant ways. With the possible exception of Flex, I know of no other manufacturer so attuned to their users needs and so interested in improvement of the product. Hats off to the good people in Elecraft, I wonder if a thesis could be written on this company which might prove a guide to other manufacturers. Elecraft is different in an exciting way - Forbes should do an article on this innovative firm. 73 Doug EI2CN -Original Message- From: elecraft-boun...@mailman.qth.net [mailto:elecraft-boun...@mailman.qth.net] On Behalf Of Stewart Sent: 12 February 2011 12:09 To: Elecraft Reflector Subject: [Elecraft] P3 wish list items Over the last few weeks I have been enjoying my K3/P3 combination. Overall it works very well and the P3 addition has been worth while. Their are however a couple of things that I feel would improve it's use. a) Being able to monitor your own signal on the P3 without needing to disconnect the RS232 lead. With all the leads I have coming out from the K3/P3 I find that inevitably one or more of them become disconnected in this operation. Surely the K3 can halt the RS232 handshake.? b) It would be nice to have a mode where MKR A and MKR B could be used to calculate and display the delta frequency between them. This would be useful for say determining types of EMI i.e SMPSU, TV timebase or PLT. Also it would be able to measure signal bandwidths away from the tuned frequency of the K3 . 73 Stewart G3RXQ __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

Re: [Elecraft] K3 parts delivery in UK
Ken, I am in EI land and it has been my experience that Elecraft ships larger more expensive items to EI by UPS but that if you ask, they may then send smaller items by post and it then arrives by post. I am not referring to Elecraft in this paragraph but it is not uncommon for Nevada Radio in the UK to ship by a private carrier and then have it delivered by the Irish postal service to my door. I believe some transport companies make use of local postal services to deliver the last couple of miles. In my case this is a pain in the butt as I generally have to pick up the parcel at the local post office distribution center five miles distant. In the case of EI if one ships by post then it is delivered by post but if shipped by a private firm it may still be delivered by post. 73 Doug -Original Message- From: elecraft-boun...@mailman.qth.net [mailto:elecraft-boun...@mailman.qth.net] On Behalf Of Ken Chandler Sent: 19 January 2010 09:16 To: AD6XY Cc: elecraft@mailman.qth.net Subject: Re: [Elecraft] K3 parts delivery in UK Ok thanks everyone for the comments. Re: [Elecraft] OT: Radios and the TSA
People, Two years ago I flew from JFK to Dublin with an Icom 7400 in my checked suitcase and there was absolutely no issue in either JFK or Dublin. I have even flown back to Ireland from JFK with a chainsaw in my luggage and there was no problem. In this latter case I told them at check in that there was a chain saw which was completely dry in the suitcase. I know TSA inspected the bag with the chainsaw as the ty-wraps I use to seal the bag were cut but nothing was disturbed inside the bag or these people were very careful. The bags with the undeclared (to TSA) radios were never opened. Perhaps it is a bit more problematic with carry on luggage which seems to be what Brett is referring to. High isolation headphones are critical because you want to set gain such that weak signals are lightly heard but clearly copiable. [Elecraft] OT from KPA to CB and life blood for the hobby.
Hi All, First off I was never on CB but came into ham radio the Novice route in 1960 I am just as pleased that the FCC tries to some degree to police what can be put on eleven meters. Having said this, please let us remember that many very good people have come into Ham Radio from the CB route and I do mean good people. Some of these guys and gals do become avid CW ops even and then go on to run code classes for others. It is not only true in the USA but also in Ireland and other EU countries. The skip is one of the things which really opens their eyes and makes Ham Radio interesting. I hope that now with Sun Spots making some recovery that again we may have a much needed infusion of new blood. I lecture in electronics and a colleague asked me today if ours was not a dying hobby. Well, I was to some extent dishonest and denied it but it is a worry. For that matter I understand there is a dearth of good radio designers in the west these days. It seems one area of engineering where being in the seventies is not so much a disadvantage. Wayne and Eric, You are both smart engineers and business men. Survey your market before you manufacture high power amplifiers with an associated high cost. There are plenty of amplifiers on the market new and old which do exactly what is needed and interfacing is not such a problem. No one wants Elecraft a small company to get into financial trouble. Four thousand K3 owners are not looking for the LPA 800/1500. No matter what some say there are a number of us waiting for the P3!!! (see THP, etc.) To be competitive in that market, any Elecraft offering would have to be highly innovative and I just don't see much more that can be done. Gotta disagree with this comment. There is no Elecraft-quality amp kit on the market, indeed, maybe no 800, 1500 watt kits at all. But there are now almost 4000 K3 owners, many looking for amps with straight forward K3 hookups and compatibility with the K3. If you don't think hookup and compatibility of amps with the K3 are not an issue, you're not following the reflector. Furthermore no one competes with Elecraft on customer service. Again this reflector clearly demonstrates lots of interest in Elecraft amps. IMO, QRO is much more important than all these trivial little toys they are building now. I have a much more pressing need for a KPA- than I do a panadapter (with limited features) and a wattmeter. I have a very nice panadapter that has rig control from the computer, and it didn't cost 700 bucks, and I can control it with the MOUSE Gotta agree with this. Elecraft got left in the dust with their panadapter. For $25, I built a Softrock for Elecraft K3 that runs Power SDR If you don't want to.build a Softrock, buy an LP Pan for about $200. Again you can run Power SDR. Either way creates an inexpensive panadapter that provides an amazing visual display significantly larger than the P3 proposes. It provides 2 RX VFOs, even if your K3 has no subreceiver. It provides point and click mouse tuning. And it provides entry to the world of SDR. Elecraft's P3 apparently will not have I and Q jacks. Re: [Elecraft] Elecraft Amps
I wonder what true compatibility is. An amplifier either works well with the K3 or it does not. I know that both Acom 1000 and Acom 2000A work perfectly with the K3. Interfacing an amplifier is not such a big deal with the K3. Of course some of our fellows have questions from time to time but I believe that most people get their amplifier to work just fine with the K3. I should love to see Elecraft with successful amplifiers which were making good money for them. I would be very sorry to see them bring out such a major product which did not return its investment. Maybe Elecraft will show us all again that they can beat all the competition but amplifiers are a bit more basic. An old Heathkit SB200/220 can still do wonders to raise the output a few dB. 73 Doug EI2CN -Original Message- From: elecraft-boun...@mailman.qth.net [mailto:elecraft-boun...@mailman.qth.net] On Behalf Of lawrence libsch Sent: 11 February 2010 15:49 To: elecraft@mailman.qth.net Subject: [Elecraft] Elecraft Amps Group - For those who believe Elecraft can't compete in the amp market, I ask you to consider the market into which Elecraft introduced the K3. [Elecraft] Short Wave Receiver
Hi Eric and Elecrafters, I have just installed my second RX with the KBPF3. I am just now listening to the shortwave broadcast bands and using the 13 KHz NBFM filter and 6 kHz AM filter am surprised at how good the radio does with a pair of micro KLH HiFi Speakers for SWLing. This is not my normal hobby but I wonder if as others have suggested if Elecrafter may have a ready made product for a market which may be larger than the ham market. A top end SWL receiver might not be too difficult for Elecraft to eventually add to their product line. The K3 is certainly providing me with entertainment. My normally feeling is that all bands must take second place to HF amateur bands. Six and two meters are for me very much secondary to the best performance on the HF bands for which no compromise should be made. The K3 however seems to do it all. Re: [Elecraft] Super K3
Dunc, Everything is relative and boy can I appreciate your joy with the old HRO. There was a good bit to be said for the Novice Class license. I remember in 1960 operating with a military surplus RBG2 (Super Pro) and TCS crystal controlled in my case tank transmitter. My father(later WA4GHS), when I was age 13 and just back from Boy Scouts Camp gave me his old Hallicrafters S38 originally purchased to listen to the Irish Short Wave Station which never came to be. I used the S38 till age 15 and sold it and along with money from selling doughnuts door to door and some baby sitting money purchased the RGB 2 with the help of K4GHS who also lent me the TCS. Later there were a few home brew rigs and NBFM to get on phone. Those were good days. By age seventeen I had a Drake 2B which took all of a summers work to purchase. Now it is a K3! Life is still good even if the joints are stiff. 73 Doug EI2CN ex KN4WQZ __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
Re: [Elecraft] P3
Phil, I agree with your desire to keep my K3 PC free. I do contest and use WinTest which is a great help but my normal log is paper and all contest logs are printed out before placing them in a binder. A good friend of mine almost gave up the hobby because he could no longer access his HDD bound logs and yes I know everyone should back up but there is a lot of data on floppies and zip disks which is becoming harder to access. My old 1960s logs are still for the good. Another reason I prefer to be disconnected from the PC is lightning protection. When not in use I tend to disconnect the K3 from antenna and mains but if it were connected to the PC then there would be that much more to disconnect so as to stay isolated from phone/LAN and power mains. This is a personal choice but it is one of the main reasons why I am not taking a less expensive approach to the spectrum display panadaptor. To each his own and discussion is healthy. 73 Doug EI2CN -Original Message- __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
Re: [Elecraft] attenuator in amp was Re: K3 and Expert 1K-FA
Dear OMs, I can not understand why one would want to run the K3 at 100 W rather than 20/30/50 Watts. Why drive the K3 harder when driving it more lightly should improve reliability and possibly improve linearity. The waste of energy is also undesirable; the fifty watts out that is discarded probably costs 100 Watts of energy. The idea of adding an attenuator for 50 Watts of energy sounds mad to me and environmentally unfriendly as well. 73 Doug EI2CN __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

Hi, The know does look and sound nice but oh such an expense. The Scottish blood in my veins is turning cold. One should always question; will the encoder and its bearings take this added weight for ten years. How much of a pain will it be to replace the encoder in the future? Re: [Elecraft] FT-5000 against K3 ?
James, You state this very well. Competition is good and sooner or later someone will produce a better radio than the K3. Many K3 users would like different emphasis in areas of design but then come to realize that we would probably miss some of the current features such as portability. There is however one area that I bet no one is going to equal and that is the involvement of design engineers with amateurs! The design is ever improving and we have a great community within the Elecraft users. No other radio manufacturer yet matches this and I bet no one will. 73 Doug EI2CN -Original Message- From: elecraft-boun...@mailman.qth.net [mailto:elecraft-boun...@mailman.qth.net] On Behalf Of James Duffey Sent: 23 May 2010 17:03 To: elecraft@mailman.qth.net Cc: James Duffey Subject: Re: [Elecraft] FT-5000 againts K3 ? There are exceptions, for a particularly pathological case look at the Third Order Dynamic Range Narrow Spaced (dB) for the two K2s that Robert Sherwood tested: http://www.sherweng.com/table.html For radios based on straight analog to digital converters (ADC), that is those that have no traditional mixer/LO/IF front end, such as the Perseus the third order dynamic range is not a good figure of merit, as the third order products do not manifest themselves until the ADC has essentially saturated. Everyone should be happy that other manufacturers are striving for optimum receiver performance competitive with Elecraft, whether driven by the K3 or not. Competition is healthy for the market place and we all benefit. It is a lack of American competition in the 70s and 80s that allowed the Japanese imports to get a toehold here. [Elecraft] K3 Headphones
Sam, When this topic was previously discussed I saw mention of Extreme Isolation EX 29 headphones which provide: 1) Good noise suppression (29 dB or nearly a factor of 1000 at 1000 Hz) so you can keep the volume down and not hear your station's fans or the TV in the next room. 2) Comfort and an adjustable padded headband. 3) Exact impedance match for the K3 at 32 Ohms and hence plenty of volume from the K3. 4) They are California made and cost $99. 5) Stereo headphones with built in adapter for the larger phone plug jack used on the K3 front panel. The adapter plugs in and then screws home over the smaller stereo plug attached permanently to the phones. The plugs appear to have gold plating, which is a complete waste. 6) They come with a nine foot line cord which I just wrapped around a toroidal core even though I was not experiencing problems with noise. They are also available with a 40 inch long cord. I purchased a set and am most pleased with them. You can look the Extreme Isolation EX-29 Headphones up on Google or go to http://www.quietheadphones.com/product/ex-29 and order by post for $99. These headphones are made for musicians to use in groups but I think they are missing another market. I also have the Heil Proset Plus but prefer these cans for CW work. Both sets of phones have their advantages but for CW the Extreme Isolation phones are more to my liking. The AVERAGE and MKRA/B parameter adjustment text on the external display is removed when the adjustment is exited on the P3. . The VFB RS-232 command now works with the SVGA display. . MKR A and MKR B adjustment text on the external display is still on after changing SVGA resolution and after the un-QSY function. . The waterfall height adjustment on the external display is terminated when pressing a toggle key on the P3. . The display frequency is correct when K3 RIT is on after switching from tracking to fixed-tune mode. . Fixed an intermittent bug in the #QSY RS-232 command. . Added monochrome waterfall color table. . Spectrum trace no longer resets (sags) when VFO A or B is tuned in fixed tune mode. . Added waterfall color bias, available in P3 SVGA menu. . Top and bottom tick marks now move when tuning VFO A in tracking mode. . Spectrum/Waterfall screen update speed increased slightly. . Vertical white line center frequency added when in tracking mode. . Transmit cursor now displays 'under' VFO A cursor. . Trace averaging now resets using un-averaged data instead of zero. . Fixed RIT bug where RIT was not being displayed correctly. . Fixed I/Q sync bug that caused high noise to display on spectrum when span changed. . Fixed jumping 200 Hz VFO A/B cursors in fixed tune mode. Known Issues: 1) When CenterEn is enabled on the P3 in tracking mode and the center frequency is changed, the SVGA frequency does not stay in sync. This will be addressed in a future release. 2) Several users have seen what appears to be flickering in the waterfall display. This is not a bug - Its the normal optical result of scrolling discrete pixelated data and noise up one line at a time across the whole waterfall. It happens on the smaller P3 screen too, but it is not as evident to your eye due to the smaller size. The effect can be minimized by setting averaging to 2 and then enabling waterfall averaging. 3) 1920x1080 resolution does not correctly sync horizontally on some monitors. We are aware of this problem and are seeking a solution. In the meantime we suggest using 1440x900 resolution. 73, Paul -- View this message in context: http://elecraft.365791.n2.nabble.com/P3-Firmware-1-16-and-SVGA-1-04-now-avai lable-tp7507590.html Sent from the Elecraft mailing list archive at Nabble.com. __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help:

Re: [Elecraft] K3 - remote control head
Bill, I wonder if the Elecraft K3 has the I/O signals to easily implement a remote head. This is a feature which has been requested in the past and I think that Elecraft even had a prototype at one time but it died a death - could be wrong on this last point.I too have hoped for this feature as implemented with the Orion II but Elecraft has supplied so much it is churlish for me to look for more.God, an improved AGC for CW, P3 SVGA adapted for data modes - it is hard to keep up with Elecraft. They are such an unusual company in their close links to the customer base and willingness to oblige when they can. We are a fortunate bunch to have chosen their product. The hot keys software is supposed to implement some of what I want in a remote control head but the confession is that I have not tried this yet. Fred, You are right but small is beautiful. This is a dream or wish and I can understand. The wee KX1 sure does look like fun. The Kx3 is incredible and thanks be for the K3! I would also say that adding the features that would turn a KX-1 into a KX-3 not only makes no business sense for Elecraft, but also would disserve the loyal customer base. That said, the two features of the KX-1 I would love to see added/changed are: 1. More digits in the display. Maybe it's just me, but I often have to toggle among resolutions to remember where I am in the band. 2. More bands. Not necessarily all. For qrp, 20 and 30 are great for daytime, and 40 and 80 for night. Would be nice to have 15. [Elecraft] Elecraft[low power] We span the Atlantic
Dear OMs and Yls, Okay the subject line is rather hoaky but I write to tell you that a wet string sometimes works.Brought up in the sixties on radio, I remember the bunkum adverts for the Gotham Vertical. Two months ago I worked a South Carolina station using a KX3 and AlexLoop inside his room and this impressed me a good bit.I have a KX3 waiting for me in Connecticut and was looking for a portable antenna to use with it. I still doubted the AlexLoop would be an adequate antenna. Tonight using a friend's AlexLoop inside the shack I worked across the pond thirteen times between 19:36 and 21:52 using 9 Watts from the K3. This antenna measuring just under a meter in diameter was sitting on my easy chair. I am pretty impressed and you can take it Hugh that I will purchase one for my self. This antenna collapses into a case 41 x 27 x 9 cm in size and weighs perhaps 1 kg with the case. Surely a long wire out the window would out perform the AlexLoop (magnetic loop antenna) but it is not always possible to drop a quarter wave length out the window.I am not saying these QSOs all came easily but many answered on my first call but of course it was near the end of the contest and replies were becoming harder to obtain.I believe the AlexLoop with my KX3 is going to prove fun while visiting the USA. States and Provinces worked during WAE: VY2ZM NS N8BJQ OH K1LZ MA W2LK NY NY4ANC AA3BPA VE3AT ON K1RX NM K3WW PA KE9KI IN W1EQ CT NB1N MA K3WI MD All of this was done on 20M CW earlier I was on 17M and worked six EU stations in a short period of time. I have also managed two QSOs on 30M. The antenna works. It is not near the equal of a 14AVQ with single ground rod but my need is to be able to make CW QSOs when away from home. The power limit for the antennas between ten and twenty watts. I would think no more that ten watts for data modes and perhaps it is better to stay to ten watts maximum when on CW. Normally from my home QTH in Ireland I run the K3 at 65W to a 4 element SteppIR up 80 feet. I run 1500W now allowed in EI for contests. There is no comparison between capabilities. This morning I found nothing on 20M with the Alex loop and then went down to 30M to search out a couple of QSOs. It is never the case that 20M is dead with the SteppIR but the AlexLoop can travel with me on a plane and I can make QSOs and keep my fist active. QRP is 5W but QRP into a Yagi is not the same as 9W into an indoor AlexLoop. When one has worked most of the DX entities currently active this adds a bit of zest. 73 Doug EI2CN __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
Re: [Elecraft] Just a thought
Mike, I bet the equipment is donated and besides these non-USA manufacturers have been advertising and thus supporting the league for many years. They also make good gear but remember that there are one hell of a lot of K3, K2 and KX3 radios being used outside North America. Our hobby is world wide - DX is the driving point for many of us. Note also that ARRL remains aloof as it needs to if producing credible reviews in QST. Competition is good. The old USA manufactures lost it with SSB and solid state electronics for a number of years. Now there is a new group of companies really competing. I bet no one offers the service and attention to its customers that Elecraft does. The bar has been lifted and the standard of radios from overseas has also improved but can they match the personal touch of Eric, Wayne and friends? Yes I am happy to see my country of birth and citizenship again producing quality ham radio equipment. It is natural to feel this way but my dream car is still a Porsche. 73 Doug EI2CN -Original Message- From: elecraft-boun...@mailman.qth.net [mailto:elecraft-boun...@mailman.qth.net] On Behalf Of Mike Sent: 16 August 2013 11:30 To: elecraft@mailman.qth.net Subject: [Elecraft] Just a thought Septembers QST arrived the other day and on page 13 is a run down of W1AW. Re: [Elecraft] K3 and whats next from Elecraft
Dear OMs and Yls, DSP helps us all but the analogue side of electronics will be with us for some time. Audio and RF are both analogue signals Amplifiers are needed and amplifiers often benefit from some filtering. The DAC and ADC are of course both digital and analogue. What we want is the optimum blend without any fixation on digital, analogue or computer processing. Many of us feel that Elecraft has got the GUI pretty well developed. The Flex Radio approach just does not suit all of us though perhaps we are as a hobby getting too long in the tooth. Always be ready to investigate new approaches but let us not be too insistent on DSP over all other approaches. 73 Doug EI2CN __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
[Elecraft] [KX1] paddle question
Dear OMs and Yls, I just took delivery of a KX1 purchased used. I am most impressed with the small radio and have now made four QSOs with fellow EUs running 4 Watts to a 4 el SteppIR at 24M. Well the test will come when I change over to a hank of wire operated against a counterpoise. The receiver is amazing to me and the transmitter pretty good.So much is in such a small package. My main gripe just now is the lousy paddle which comes with the KX1 as a option.I also have a KX3 also purchased used and waiting for me in Connecticut. It has a paddle which I have tried on my friends KX3 - this paddle is much better than the one on the KX1.Can I swap the KX3 paddle onto the KX1?I know Bengali has an elegant wee paddle which mounts on the KX1 or KX3 depending on the attachment purchased. This may be my ultimate solution but the KX3 paddle if it mounts would be a big help. I do not want to carry around an external paddle weighing more than the KX1. The extremely small size and weight have a great attraction to me. Having a big bag of accessories is not to my liking. A simple radio and some wire seems to be ideal for me.The KX3 is for different applications. The receiver is great fun on both CW and SSB and the stability of it impresses me. Today was discussing the old Hallicrafters SX28 and you know the KX1 seems to have a better receiver. I think this small wonder is great fun and can see why Elecraft has kept it in the product line. 73 Doug EI2CN K3, KX3, KX1 __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

It worked very nicely, but required a button battery that I didn't want to have to depend on when camping. I settled on the Palm Mini Paddle. It's a lot cheaper than the Bengali Adventure (which wasn't available then), and is an excellent performer, nearly indestructible and packs very small. They make a mount to put it on the KX1, but I find a paddle bolted to a rig to be too inflexible for comfortable operating. Re: [Elecraft] [KX1] paddle question
Don, Your points are taken. The KXPD3 is by far a better paddle than the KXPD1 from this operator's point of view. I can struggle with the KXPD1 but hate it so the very dear Bengali will probably be my solution. We are all different but for me the KXPD1 does not meet Elecraft standards. The KX1 on the other hand is a marvel for such a small box. Thank you for your tips! I will keep them in mind and soldier on with the KXPD1 until a Bengali is in my hands. It is too bad the KXPD3 can not be used with the KX1. We are all entitled and perhaps I am just not good enough to use the KXPD1. 73 Doug EI2CN and thank you again. -Original Message- From: Donald Butler [mailto:n...@comcast.net] Sent: 07 September 2013 20:01 To: 'Doug Turnbull'; 'EricJ'; elecraft@mailman.qth.net Subject: RE: [Elecraft] [KX1] paddle question I think we often become much too critical and forget that the KX1 and KXPD1 are designed for portable use, particularly light backpacking and portable operation. I therefore believe it is unfair to compare them with other paddles and transceivers. I own a KX1/KDPD1 and a KX3/KXPD3, and also have two K3s (with which I use a Begali Magnetic Signature paddle). The Begali is far, far superior to these small portable paddles of course ... As it should be the KXPD3 is better than the KXPD1 . but as far as I'm concerned the KXPD1 is also perfectly satisfactory for the type of operation for which it is primarily intended. I did have difficulty when I first got it, but quickly learned that it works almost perfectly if I squeeze the paddles at the very tips rather than the mid-paddle area..in my hands it was that simple to solve the problem. I think the KX1 and KX3 are both engineering marvels and I love them both. When I'm operating portable, I think an occasional dropped dit or dah is a very small price to pay for the convenience of having light, easy to carry paddles securely mounted to a totally self-contained portable transceiver. I think this small wonder is great fun and can see why Elecraft has kept it in the product line
Re: [Elecraft] [KX3] KX3 with Alex Loop
Gary, I have a KX3 and KX1 and have operated both portable from Connecticut and from home in EI using this antenna on CW.I have spanned the ocean in both directions while operating with the antenna inside the shack. This is a thrill every time. What I find good about the AlexLoop is the ability to set up in some one's home and make a few QSOs. It is however no wonder antenna and in fairness no Gotham vertical claims are made for it. I would be very sure that the Buddipole is the better antenna but one would want to try them side by side. The Alex Loop does fold up into a nice small case. Have you considered the new SteppIR CrankIR. I think this is a much better antenna when compared to the AlexLoop. Having said all of this I am pleased to have the AlexLoop and it does allow me to get on while travelling without outside wires. You must be selective in where the AlexLoop is positioned; too close to some wires or metal and it may not perform as you would like. 73 Doug EI2CN -Original Message- From: elecraft-boun...@mailman.qth.net [mailto:elecraft-boun...@mailman.qth.net] On Behalf Of Gary Hawkins Sent: 03 November 2013 16:00 To: elecraft@mailman.qth.net Subject: [Elecraft] [KX3] KX3 with Alex Loop First thanks to all those that responded to my request to see a KX3 - that was achieved this weekend. I'm looking to setup a light weight SOTA setup. In addition to the KX3, I also saw a mini-buddipole and while it seems to be well manufactured and comes in a nice case it weighs about 2.5lbs, plus mast with either guys or tripod. An end-fez sloper would be extremely light but here in southern CA our peaks are short on trees, thus requiring at least one telescoping pole. This has led me to consider the Alex Loop - appears very light, fast to setup, no need to get it more than 5ft of the ground. Being a mag loop should help with QRM at local urban QTH as well. I'd love to hear from anyone using the Alex Loop with a KX3, and if you tried other SOTA type antennas as well all the better. Re: [Elecraft] [KX3] KX3 with Alex Loop
Dave, This is a good question. I have had line cords which came within inches of the antenna and did not seem problematic but a fan a foot distant was. The one thing is that you can tune in a station and try moving the antenna.I know this is not quantitative - these are just my experiences in a timber frame home. Of course this is not a problem on top a mountain and so maybe the compensations allowed by height and being in the open compensate to a large degree for the antennas deficiencies. The Alex Loop is very portable and can be set up inside a room and it works but I had to work for most of my QSOs. The one exception being at the tail end of a contest when the big guns were hungry in the USA and I worked fourteen Ws running ten watts and the Alex Loop inside the shack. It is impractical to be separated from the Alex Loop by any distance as one needs to tune the antenna if you change frequency by more than 20 kHz or so. Still I could operate and monitor from both my sister's and brother's spare bedrooms. It is neat to be running the KX1 with four watts and work across the Atlantic with a small inside antenna - it can also require some effort. 73 Doug EI2CN P.S. Re: [Elecraft] Shipping a K3
Dear OM Poul Erik, This would increase costs for Elecraft in dealing with Europe and therefore need to result in higher sales price. Elecraft prices are not exorbitant. They do not use a dealer network. If you purchase from a dealer in the UK the rule of thumb is your price in Pounds will be about the same as that in Dollars or about 65% higher and often the UK warranty is not as good as that in the USA. I personally hope Elecraft never locks us into dealerships. You can still purchase directly with a savings in cost or you can purchase from a dealer and take advantage of their warranty. Mind you the savings are not 65% as you must pay for shipping and taxes. We pay for living in Europe but there are also some things we prefer here. Elecraft support is good and so if you can localize the fault to a module then the module could be returned rather than the whole radio. The Elecraft products are reasonably reliable and not prone to failure. I do not believe we are going to do better. I would not find radios from other manufacturers to be better supported. You are right to explore the topic. Please forgive my counter view. Re: [Elecraft] Remote encoder?
Ken and Eric, This encoder looks good but lacks buttons for activating the CW/SSB memories which for me is the biggest advantage of a remote pod. I use these memories all the time in normal operation as they save time, effort and voice. A pod would be much easier to access than the small buttons on the K3. I also have an Orion II with pod and find it most helpful! Even in contests where WinTest and the Micro Keyer II do most of the work it would be most useful to be able to access the K3 memories for some extra messages but as I have learned it can cause problems to just stab your finger at the radio in the heat of a contest. A pod has more limited possibilities for getting into trouble and can be conveniently placed on the operating desk. Well this is an old talking point for me and I suppose Elecraft is so busy that it will remain on a back burner. We are a demanding lot but TenTec does it so why not emulate the best of what is available from TT. Re: [Elecraft] Why I won't purchase K3
Hi All, No criticism of Elecraft as I am a convert to the K3 but building your own means home brew not building a kit. Heathkits, were always fun and yes you learned something from the step by step assembly but never so much as you learned from scrounging exchange parts, laying out the chassis, drilling cutting filing and building from scratch. A design of your own takes things even further down this path but even using a magazine article project counts as home brew but not kits. I like kits, I like my assembled K3 and I like home brew but have not done any not in a shameful length of time. Forgive an old goat of 51 years in the hobby. I do understand that the K2 does involve more work than many a kit including some coil winding. Elecraft makes good gear and good kits. Mechanical assembly of the K3 may well help when trouble shooting in future. 73 Doug EI2CN -Original Message- From: elecraft-boun...@mailman.qth.net [mailto:elecraft-boun...@mailman.qth.net] On Behalf Of David Gilbert Sent: 06 March 2011 16:38 To: elecraft@mailman.qth.net Subject: Re: [Elecraft] Why I won't purchase K3 No offense meant (seriously), but I'm not sure why your definition of build it yourself must include soldering, which I perceive as just as mechanical operation as tightening screws. Yes ... it is a different skill requiring dexterity and care, especially in the case of surface mount devices, but it bears no more relationship to the electronic aspect of a kit than does aligning a connector. There is just a lot more of it to do. If the percent of effort in assembly is a required part of your definition, fine ... but there is no reason why you can't learn every bit as much about the theory of operation of the K3 as you can with the K2 except that the K3 is a heck of a lot more complex. The schematics for the K3 are all available and there are folks on this reflector who would gladly step forward with insight into the tough parts. Now then, if you were required to design part of the rig yourself, or write some of the processing code, or align the various stages ... then I would say that you had a hand in homebrewing your rig. Otherwise, I think you're simply making an arbitrary distinction between two purely mechanical tasks. You also mention that you want to make sure that it is in the best state I could possibly make it. I can fully understand that philosophy, but for a rig as complex as the K3 there is no way you could do that manually. Modern automated soldering of fine pitch SMD's is going to vastly beat anything you can do by hand even if you were a world class surgeon with excellent eyesight, steady hands, and great tools ... if for no other reason than the odds of a mistake on the zillions of joints involved. Again, I'm not knocking your preferences, and they are exactly the reason that lots of people still prefer to design and build their own QRP rigs. You've chosen the middle ground between that and the K3 by deciding that you want to stuff a lot of parts on a PC board but don't want to settle for less performance than the K2 offers. That's probably a very good choice on your part, but it's an arbitrary selection on a continuum of complexity. 73, Dave AB7E p.s. I don't find your comments insulting at all ... I just find them to be a bit curious and arbitrary. It felt like I was giving birth to a baby or something - making sure that it is in the best state I could possibly make it. And I could also learn from it, a lot, in fact. Now, don't get me wrong, when it comes to the specs of K3 I bow my head to the designers of it - it's truly a one son of a gun radio. It's pretty much the heaven dream for CW. I know that. But there is one thing which makes me uneasy - it's not the radio I built. It's not even the radio I assembled. It's the radio someone else built, and all I am reduced to is plates arrangements and screwdriver turning. It's almost like I am not sure whether I should be thanking Wayne and Eric, or curse them.
