Hi Judy!

I suspect that you have the wrong kind of painting dynamics selected:

https://i.imgur.com/bBmuCUk.png

Please click on the icon to the left of the selected area and choose
"Dynamics Off" in the dropdown list.

Please note that if you use a graphic tablet (Wacom etc.), this will
disable pen pressure. If you only use a mouse, you should be fine.

Greetings again,

UPDATE: Seems GIMP just resumed functioning as if nothing happened. The
'flickering' pointer is no longer.

Thanks for listening. Please disregard my need for support.

Cheers,

Sent from Mail for Windows 10

Greetings,

Am using GIMP 2.10.22 and using a Desktop PC, Windows 10 Home, 64-bit OS.

Got this problem with a using the Clone Tool- the pointer started ‘flickering’.

And it only seems to do that when I move the pointer.

Selecting an area to Clone and applying this to your image is difficult to do
now.

Other tools like the Eraser, Pencil, Paintbrush, Smudge, etc. are also affected.

It only started today and I’ve tried:

  1. Resetting the tool settings to default
  2. Restarting my PC
  3. Uninstalling and re-installing GIMP

Nothing seems to work.

Attached a short video to show you the problem.

Hope you are able to fix this. Thank you.

Victor.

Re: [Gimp-user] Problem with text

2021-02-08 Thread Ofnuts via gimp-user-list

My solution is "Layer>text to path" and then bucket-fill a selection
from that path. I assume that the path is directly obtained from the
font at that point and and so is more accurate than the Gimp/Pango
rendering.

This said it would be nice if the SPR were disabled for these uses.

The only solution I've found that works every time is to discard the text

Depending on the mode, desaturating still leaves some remnants behind for me.

You may find desaturating the layer afterwards helps; it's usually to
do with sub-pixel positioning on LCD screens.

Re: [Gimp-user] Problem

2021-02-05 Thread Ofnuts via gimp-user-list

In Gimp you can select the pixels areas that are subject to editing
(painting, but also geometry transform). This is done using a selection
mask (often called "the selection") that covers the whole image. Your
editing is constrained by two things: it applies to the "active/current"
layer, and within that layer, to the pixels covered by the selection
mask. So there should be some overlap between the layer and the
selection mask for something to happen.

In your case, you likely have some tiny selection somewhere that falls
outside your active layer. You can remove it using "Select>None". When
there is no selection, the transform tools apply to the whole of the
active layer.

How are you starting the installer? This sounds like you're starting it
from a program that's set to compatibility mode - try running the installer
from Explorer (and if that still gives you the same error, right-click it,
go to Properties → Compatibility tab and clear all the checkboxes there).

Years ago I used Irfanview as an image file manager on a Windows XP
system with waaay to many images to keep track of otherwise, and it
worked very well. Set the GIMP as default "editor" in Irfanview and
viola, instant easy access for editing. Irfanview most likely remains
far superior to Microsoft's default image viewer.

I have always found the default behavior of Windows Explorer -
displaying thumbnails of image files instead of file type icons - very
annoying. Opening a directory with a few hundred image files is like
stepping in glue - sit and wait while all those previews render, then
you can open the subdirectory you were headed for, wait for previews to
render there, etc. This may have improved in later versions, or maybe
not.

Windows Explorer used to save all those thumbnails as files, creating
massive clutter in the file system; I wonder if the mystery .lnk files
mentioned above may have something to do with that process. I have
found the "windows classic" User Interface option with image previews
turned off wy cleaner, faster, and easier to use than the various
"latest and greatest" default User Experience configurations.

Why the .lnk files exist at all is a mystery to me; these are created
when one makes a "shortcut" pointing to a file that is (usually) located
in another directory. Apparently Windows 10 is doing this automatically
for some reason? If so there may be a way to disable it, then those
.lnk files won't present any more problems - although the existing ones
will remain.

I had never used the GIMP's file search tool before, but when I just
tried it out I noticed that the user selects which directory to search
in; since there's no reason for those .lnk files to exist, maybe more
than one of them is created in more than one directory, and maybe she is
looking in the wrong directory. If she could create a directory just
for files she is working on, and search in only that directory, that
might be a solution.

I'm not sure about Windows 10, but "find as you type" has never worked
in previous versions of Windows Explorer; from Windows 98 though Windows
XP, it always searched only for the last letter typed, by looking at the
first letters of the file names in the directories. If that /has/ been
fixed in Windows 10, she could open the directory where the file she
wants to open lives, type its name until it is automagically selected,
then drag and drop it to the GIMP canvas or toolbox to open it. Or
right click and "open with" the GIMP.

The actual file search tool in Windows Explorer does work (as far as I
know, at least it used to), so she could use that to find the files she
wants, and drag and drop them to the GIMP. Or, right-click the file
icon or thumbnail, and select open with > GIMP from the drop down menu.

Finding a file that has "gone missing" after being worked on the
previous day might be solved by doing File > Open > Recent in the GIMP.

1) remove the selection

My Problem -

In between base color and shade color, I get a small white line on some
parts.

Is the white line on the base layer or in the copy/pasted one?

Re: [Gimp-user] Problem with exporting as .bmp for MS Windows BITMAP resource

2016-09-04 Thread Richard
This is a known issue when exporting BMP files from within GIMP -- using RLE
compression, colorspace or alpha channel in the target file is not supported by
all BMP loaders, so check your Export options to be sure.

(This being said, I was unable to reproduce this scenario on my Win 10 system
regardless of my export settings -- I have however encountered it in Windows
XP.)

Subject: [Gimp-user] Problem with exporting as .bmp for MS Windows BITMAP
resource

I wanted to export an image as a .bmp file for use as a BITMAP resource in an MS
Windows .rc file.
The CBitmap method for loading the resource failed.
The road to making the file usable turned out *not* to be as straight as I had
hoped.

Looking at the header showed that the saved .bmp was compressed (type=3).
I converted the file using ImageMagick to the older "bmp3" format.
Now the file contained uncompressed (type=0) RGB data and loaded nicely into the
application.

Now the problem was the alpha channel.
Apparently, the ImageMagick team last year (on a request) added the possibility
to force
bmp3 to include the alpha channel with the --alpha flag.
Now the image looked strange in areas where there was a gradient in the alpha.
It seems like Windows wants the RGB data to be premultiplied with the alpha
channel.

So, after a long time searching through forums, I finally came up with an
ImageMagick
command line which converted a .png to a .bmp (bmp3) with premultiplied alpha.
Using this, my toolbar icons looked great, without any alpha-related border
artifacts.

My questions are:
1. Has anyone experienced the same problem?
(Besides the guy requesting the --alpha flag from the ImageMagick team) ;)

2. Why doesn't .bmp-export in GIMP have options to handle this?
Is the image format used in any real extent on any other platform???
(Like "export for Windows resource compatibility")

To remove the GIMP's configuration files, you will need to find them in
your Windows user account's program data files. It has been over a
decade (yay) since I have used any Microsoft product, so can't say where
to find these files on your system. Uninstalling the GIMP and searching
your file system for the word "gimp" should turn them up, although you
may have to enable viewing hidden files in Windows Explorer for this to
work.

Once found, delete the GIMP directory and try installing again. If the
problem is a corrupted or missing or alien configuration file (which
seems likely from the symptoms), that should fix it.

I've used Gimp 2.4.2 for years now, and haven't upgraded because it works fine.
Today for some unknown reason, when I open a file in Gimp and click

the bottom taskbar of my computer, but I cannot access it. It's as if it's
minimized and I cannot undo that. I tried uninstalling and reinstalling Gimp,
but it seems to be keeping settings and/or files on my computer because even
after uninstalling it, rebooting and reinstalling it, the work history still
shows up and the problem is still there.

I even tried uninstalling Gimp and upgrading to the latest version
(2.8.whatever) and now the problem is happening with the Hue/Contrast tool. It
simply does not open. On the main menu it will show the Hue/Contrast dialogue
box, but it says something about "Tool has no options". I can't even find what
that says now, because when I re-open Gimp, I do not get the main menu that used
to pop up. Only a window to open a new file.

Is Gimp string some sort of corrupted files on my computer? How do I fix this?

Find your Gimp profile like this:
http://gimpforums.com/thread-what-is-my-gimp-profile-and-where-do-i-find-it
(with of course a different version number).

Then erase the "sessionrc" file in it (which is where the windows
positions are kept). In case of more problems, rename the whole
directory, restarts Gimp (this will create a new one) and then move your
things (brushes, scripts, etc...) from old to new.

But installing a later Gimp version would be a good idea.

The right way now is to just run 'dnf builddep gimp'. This should

Install a C compiler, you probably need GCC, C++, do a yum search on those
items.

Once you get those installed, rerun configure, and read carefully the next
failure and install that as well, probably be autotools

Do you get such a message?

The program 'gimp' received an X Window System error.
This probably reflects a bug in the program.
The error was 'BadWindow (invalid Window parameter)'.
(Details: serial 20405 error_code 3 request_code 18 minor_code 0)
(Note to programmers: normally, X errors are reported
asynchronously;
that is, you will receive the error a while after causing it.
To debug your program, run it with the --sync command line
option to change this behavior. You can then get a meaningful
backtrace from your debugger if you break on the gdk_x_error()
function.)

Is it a new problem due to Kubuntu packages?

Re: [Gimp-user] problem with gimp

2015-03-11 Thread John McCormack
Can you explain a little more please?
What format (ending) are you specifying when you export the images?
If you use .jpg for example your alpha channel will not take effect and
transparent pixels will be replace with whatever was the background colour
when you exported the image (default is usually white).
If you export as .png and do not have a background layer turned-on/visible
then the image should export properly with transparent pixels.

Take care,

I think there have been similar reports before where it turned out that
some software can't open interlaced PNG files, so try deselecting
"interlacing" in PNG export dialog.

Is there any message in gimp's error window?

I presume you get the "Export Image as PNG" dialog, and when you click the
"Export" button, you see the progress bar at the bottom of the main export
window "fill up" before the dialog disappears?

Are you saving a new image or overwriting an existing one?

What kind of system are you running on?

I'm not too sure how much GIMP differs from my linux version and the OSX
version you use.

I seldom use text in GIMP but when I do a simple click and type doesn't
work, although when I click on the canvas I have a box thingy divided in
four, when I use my mouse to drag any of those corners/quarters, usually the
bottom right one, my text area is immediately enlarged and I can type to my
hearts content.

Re: [Gimp-user] Problem importing raw Minolta and Sony files

2014-04-05 Thread Partha Bagchi
I admit I missed your previous image and so apologies I don't know what
Darktable shows.

When I processed in UFRaw (version 0.20, my build and part of my Gimp build
for Windows 64-bit), It looks fine. I set the exposure to -1.48,
White-balance to Daylight.

If I play a little more with the curves, I get results similar to Photoshop
CC with ACR 8.3. So, I don't think you are missing anything.

I did process in Gimp 2.9 with UFRaw 16-bit.

Hope that helps.

The jpg images look very much like what you see in the Darktable images
provided on the webpage.

Antonio Montagnani and Patrick Shanahan also provided feedback regarding
loading my test image into UFRaw. Thank you all for the valuable feedback.
I admit to certainly not being well versed in using UFRaw and appreciate all
the pointers being provided.

One thing I had missed before but do see now, is a warning symbol next
to the white balance button. This does not appear for the Minolta .mrw
images but seems to always display for the Sony .arw files. When you hover
over it, it states "Cannot use camera white balance." That is why Auto is
being selected in place of "Daylight". It makes me wonder what other raw
file data is not being processed by UFRaw for these types of files? And I
wonder if there is something particularly amiss with the Ubuntu build of
UFRaw on my system? When others load the sample file, are you seeing a
better image than the one I have posted, prior to making any corrections?
When you load other types of raw images, does UFRaw display them close to
the accurate (i.e., camera) settings? If so, what version of UFRaw and what
type of system/OS are you using?

Thanks again for all the valuable help.

Looks like a normal image when opened here (fbsd, ufraw 0.19.2).
Underexposed, but can be brought up to 1.49 w/out any overexposure
blinkies. Clouds have lots of definition. WB (Camera WB) looks fine.
A little *tiny* bit of purple fringing; I'd be delighted if all
mine had that little.

You don't have the color profile, gamma, and linearity set to something
strange, do you? If I set to no profile, gamma=0.45, linearity 0.1
all looks good.

Sure. Let's use the clouds photo since it is a more modern Sony format and
pretty dramatically shows the loss of information. Point your browser here:

It's true that the lion image imported into UFRaw is terribly over exposed,
but that is something that UFRaw is doing to the raw data. The original
image has proper exposure which was confirmed at the time the picture was
shot as well as the proper exposure from the companion JPEG image (I shoot
RAW+JPG). In UFRaw the histogram is shoved completely to the right edge
of the spectrum and there is no way to use this tool to fix the picture as
most of the image detail is already lost. When I open the same file in the
DiMAGE Image Viewer software from Minolta (on a Windows XP machine), the
raw image looks just fine and can be tweaked.

So I have to assume that this is a serious bug in UFRaw and I have reported
it as such. I'm just confused that I have not heard other people complaining
about this problem.

Darktable applies RGB camera curve, uses "enhanced" camera color matrix
and applies a little sharpening by default.

I reported on this a long while ago and then got very busy with other
things. This is a follow-up with details.

When attempting to load Minolta (mrw) and Sony (arw) raw image files into
GIMP, UFRaw is not properly processing them. The following webpage has
images which demonstrate the problem:

http://smallthoughts.com/photos/misc/GIMP/index.html

The raw files are being imported with distorted color and contrast.
However, as the additional images show, other programs such as Darktable
and Shotwell are importing and displaying these files properly.

Has anyone else been experiencing similar problems, and is there any known
solution?

This is kind of a shot in the dark. I don't know anything about shotwell,
and not much about darktable. But I know darktable automatically applies
an exposure correction curve to the raw file when it imports it, and ufraw
does not (unless you set one as the default). You might look at the
exposure correction curve darktable applies and see what it looks like when
you apply a similar curve in ufraw. There may be other automagic things
darktable does in regards to color; not sure.

Hi Dylan,

you could use GIMP 2.8.10. It's without the need of XQuartz,
so this could solve this problem.

I had a problem with the mouse cursor flickering, although more rapidly

Congratulations on the new camera! Maybe for Christmas you will get some
lenses :-)

On Linux there's also darktable. Shotwell can also import images and can
open them in gimp.

Also, make sure you have a recent version of ufraw. I have 0.19.2 here
but I don't have a Sony Alpha camera, so if you send me one I'll try
it :-) or, less flippantly, if you put a couple of sample raw images
somewhere, I can try some programs and see if I've got better
suggestions.

Exactly which gimp version are you using, and exactly which Linux
distribution?

Well same here. I can't reproduce the issue at all. But since 3 people
reported what seems like exactly the same issue, with same symptoms, I
opened a bug report: https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=719817
If any of you experience this issue again and manages to find a way to
reproduce it every time, please complete the report. That would help
to diagnose.

Now that you mention it, no. I can't reproduce it every time.

A:
Just now I fired up GIMP, file->new->640x400
Selection and paintbrush worked for both mouse and touchpad.

B:
Open a jpg - now neither the selection tool nor the paintbrush tool works for
the mouse. The pen works properly though.

C:
Switch back to the original new image tab:
selection and paintbrush not working for mouse

Close GIMP
Open GIMP

D:
repeat A:
mouse not working for _any_ tools I try (to be fair, I only tried selection and
paintbrush for A-C earlier though).
GIMP still responsive to mouse events though - eg menu, click tabs, quick mask
and nav widgets

hope that helps.

Re: [Gimp-user] Problem with the toolbox GIMP 2.8 Mac

2013-08-27 Thread scl

Hi mauricemaurice,

if this error happens with both versions, the cause is probably
in your system. You can try the following:
1. Remove or rename the folder /Users/$username/Library/Application
Support/GIMP/2.8/ (for the 2.8.4 version. For the version from

gimp.lisanet.de check the location in GIMP/Preferences/Folders).
Restart or reinstall GIMP.
If that doesn't work:
2. Try Partha's GIMP build: www.partha.com
If that doesn't work:
3. It's perhaps a bug in OS X 10.8.4. An update to the latest
10.8.5 could perhaps fix it. The 10.8.5 version is expected
to be released the next days. I don't use OS X 10.8, so take this
advice without warranty, please ;-)

Thanks for reply.

Short answer: I did... Changed the paper size there, & thru printer
set-up/s (from within the program, control panel, HP printer set up,
etc.). Nothing worked (i.e., got paper mismatch) in GIMP (Windows). To
repeat sonmewhat, printed same parameters fine in Ifranview (Windows).

Re: [Gimp-user] problem with openraster plugin in GIMP 2.8.2

2012-11-23 Thread Nik Omul
In my case it was all my own fault. I'm using file-apng 3rd party plugin and
had to modify about a dozen of other plugins and scripts that call for
standard png
load/save procedure. Openraster is one of them. When I installed latest
version of GIMP
back then, my modified openraster got somehow moved to other location. I was
unaware
of that and overlooked error messages gimp was issuing.
Almost right after I posted question here I looked it up and found out that
openraster plugin
in my plugins folder was not modified.
I was thinking of updating the status to 'resolved' but apparently forgot to
do so.
My apologies.

In your case I would probably try installing application from the official

This should have zero effect on GIMP, since it's compiled with MinGW, and
uses msvcrt.dll (which is a part of Windows, and can't be replaced, except
by Windows updates).

I did several tests, installing and uninstalling Visual C++ libraries,
deleting the profile and so on, to no avail. It may be a bug in the Gimp.
There is a bug ticket in bugzilla (here:
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=676468 ). I'm going to write
there my experience so the bug appears as confirmed. You could post there
your specs too to help developers find the problem.

So, till it is fixed, I think we'll have to wait for the next release to
use the cage tool (or use Linux :)).

I cannot select text when the editor is active. I have to close the

It is (still) not clear what "change baseline" is supposed to do.

Kerning and letter spacing are not the same thing. Or shouldn't be ;-)

Kerning automatically adjust spacing between letters, e.g. moving V and
A closer together so that they look as if they are evenly spaced.
Kerning uses data included with the fonts. Pair Kerning normally has two
settings (on and off); adjusting the spacing between a specific pair of
characters is also called kerning - either "every V/A pair" or "this
particular pair".

Letter spacing is a constant amount of space added to (or subtracted
from) the glyph advance between every pair of characters.

If that's not how the terms are used, please file a bug.

Yes, the text editor does not support all of the typographical features.

There was a move to remove it, but there are useability problems with
removing it - especially when you have text on a path, or if your text
doesn't all fit on the screen.

Thanks! I needed some experimenting to get used to the new facility but
it sure looks handy and efficient. It still needs some work, though.

Since we now have three ways to control text properties there's a risk
of confusing descriptions. For example, the text options panel has
"Adjust line spacing" while the tool box overlay has "Change baseline of
selected font". The options panel has "Adjust letter spacing" while the
tool box overlay has "Change kerning of selected text". The text editor
seems to be consistent with the tool box overlay.

Several features do not seem to function properly. In particular, the
text editor seems to behave strange. See e.g.
http://www.squirrel.nl/pub/xfer/uploads/3CAk4t63w4ZFPF_047osONJA.png

In the text options, the kerning is adjusted with +10. This can be seen
on the canvas. The second word "the" has had the kerning changed back to
0.

In the text editor, the text is not shown with +10 kerning and,
surprise, the second word "the" is not unkerned, but lowered.

Changing the baseline using the semi-transparent tool box does not have
any effect, neither does changing the baseline in the text editor.
Changing it in the 'classical' tool options dialog does work.

When the text editor is shown, the on-cavas editing doesn't work
anymore.

In the text editor, when you want to change e.g. the font size of a
piece of text, strange things happen. For example, select the word
"quick" and then go to the font size field and use the mouse wheel. The
selection is lost and although the font size (number) changes, no text
is affected.

I consider these "first release" inconveniences that beyond doubt will
get fixed soon.

All by all the new text features are promising.

  Mmm. That's what 2.6 does also. Perhaps there's a bug in 2.7.4?

Johan, when you say (in (2)) "...where the text entered appears", does
anything also appear in the 'font settings' window as you enter text?

No, I didn't touch the Font field. The only thing that happened in

(2) A 'dynamic window' appears where the text entered appears.

Did you abuse the Font field of the font settings window for text entry?

I would be most grateful if someone could confirm this (as it might be

With Gimp 2.7.4 (and presumably later), if you select 'Text' (the big
'A'), then click somewhere on an image, two things will appear:

  (1) At the place where you clicked, a 'dynamic' window* will appear
  (2) Above it a text-entry window will appear.

When text is entered into (2), it does *not* appear in (1). Agreed?
(Whereas with Gimp 2.6, it *does*.)

Can anyone see how to make the text also appear in the 'dynamic' window
(apart from manual Copy/Paste)?

(* I don't know what the Gimp term for that window is.)

Many thanks!

Command-line functions are no good for this job.
You need to be looking at the image, so that you can:

  (1) See what the annotation should be
  (2) See that the text is positioned correctly, and of suitable size
and font.

Gimp is (was) perfect for that - simple and smooth.

In case I can't find a suitable GUI alternative, I have put a block on

> I am not "repeatedly saving/exporting' to JPG", but only
> once per image (to write annotation),

Using Gimp 2.6 on a Mandriva system. I have happily been using a
combination of Imagemagick's 'Convert' and Gimp to write annotation at
the foot of certain directories of .jpg images:

(1) Place a white panel at the foot of each image:

   -
   for img in *.jpg
do convert $img -gravity South -background White -splice 0x50 $img
  done
   -

(2) Take each image into Gimp (2.6), select Text, click on the white
panel, and write the annotation into the white panel, then save/export
(or whatever).
A very simple, smooth, and effective solution.

Now, however, I am working on Mageia-2 (Beta3), which provides Gimp
2.7.4, and - guess what - the Text function now works differently and
(for my purpose) more clumsily, tripling the effort needed to write the
text.

With 2.6, selecting Text and clicking on the white panel brought up a
text-entry window, such that any text entered also appeared in a dynamic
window in the white panel.
However, with 2.7.4, the text-entry window is much smaller, with no
apparent adjustment control, and any text entered does *not* appear in
the white panel.
(But I did discover that one could cut-paste from one to the other,
though the dynamic box seems more difficult to adjust.)

So the previously simple process has become a messy slog.

Have I misssed some setting/adjustment in the new Text function?

(Alternatively, could anyone recommend a package that could perform the
function of writing text into these image panels, please?)

What file did you try to download? It might be a compressed tarball file

of a program to extract the contents of the file. What you should look for

disappearing when I change a certain setting (switch to intensity, in case you
were wondering). I tried googling my problem, but all that gets me is
tutorials and the how-to-use guide. I was hoping someone here would know
what's wrong and how to fix it.

Thanks in advance!

Well, I got it to sort-of work now. It's not exactly how I want it, and I
still haven't figured out how it suddenly switched the way it wanted to work,
but I pieced something together. I'd still like to know why it did what it
did, though.

Is it possible that your image has multiple layers and that
(unknowingly) you were trying to use the filter on a layer for which the
filter would have no effect?
