[LU] Interesting factettes from the BBC
*...Let's hope they're not famous last words...* * * *Damian* * * *Leeds* • Leeds have recouped an unrivalled four Championship points from losing positions this season. • They have had 59 attempts on goal - 31 of them on target - and hit the woodwork seven times. • United have committed 61 fouls this season - more than any other team in the division. The Yorkshire side's high-tempo style has caught the eye, and has seen them have more attempts on goal this season and hit the woodwork more times than any other team in the division. But at the other end of the pitch they have been prone to the odd lapse - especially early in games. They have let in three goals in the opening 15 minutes - more than any other Championship team - and are yet to concede in the league after the 27th minute. ___ Leedslist mailing list Info and options: http://mailman-new.greennet.org.uk/mailman/listinfo/leedslist To unsubscribe, email leedslist-unsubscr...@gn.apc.org MARCHING ON TOGETHER

Re: [LU] New manager + Kaspar
Hi Richard, You are right to point out the results and, by implication, that something is not right. But in regards to the manager's performance there are some of the reports that don't make sense. Others have criticised Johnson starting and yet you say that he was probably our best player on the night. Then you seem to criticise SG's decision to replace Somma with Nunez - but go on to score Somma 2 and Nunez 6. So where are the problems? Is it down to individuals? Is it systems? Is it motivation? Is it the team's overall quality? I tend to agree with the holding player analysis (Doyle/ Faye) that someone posted earlier but I'm far too far away to be sure. If we are missing a player for a key position then all the tinkering in the world with the rest won't make a bit of difference. What is your opinion? (And before you start you'll find it hard to convince me that it is all Becchio's fault ;)) Damian On Tue, Oct 26, 2010 at 9:47 AM, Richard Walker richleed...@yahoo.co.ukwrote: Damian + Ted, I think it would be ridiculous to sack Grayson but you've got to be concerned with the results - we're conceding 4,5,6 goals most weeks now. That sort of form usually gets the manager the sack. My worry is the same as Simon Hart's in that Grayson went with the same midfield that were so poor against Leicester ? How can he do that ? When Bradley Johnson is your biggest attacking threat on the night with his long range efforts you've got to worry. We again went through 45 mins (nearly 90 mins) without troubling their keeper - a save from Snodgrass is all we managed in 90 mins Also when he drags his top scorer off and puts a young rookie on theyn you just think that here's a manager that is running out of ideas. Why was Somma (and Becchio) not having good games ? THere was no service to them, there was nobody creative. Grayson looks like a broken man but I expect him to get his act together and put out a team that will have a good go in the next 2 away games. My scores: Kasper - 3. Was he fit ? He was awful. Connelly - 5. Was the best of the bad bunch at the back. Collins - 3. Actually defended better in the first half but still not up to it. Bruce - 4. Should have cleared the ball for the first goal but still much better and I think he has potential. McCormack - 3. What has happened to him ? Howson - 3. A few glimpses but playing on his own in central midfield. Faye - 1. Just not with the pace, ok on the ball but that's not good enough. Snodgrass - 3. Slow, fat and not up to it. Johnson - 5. At least he had a go and was probably our best player on the night. Becchio - 5. Playing at the top of his game but still not nearly good enough. When he got the ball and was in space , he ran with it, swivelled round and fell over. Same old , same old. Get rid quick. Somma - 2. Worse I've seem him play but why ? 1) Shit partner 2) Shit midfield. Subs: Gradel - 6. Had a go. Nunez - 6. Also had a go but is he centre forward ? Good management? I'm not entirely sure but then again we didn't like losing to Preston did we. For nearly all the time I've followed Leeds, with the honorable exceptions of most Revie teams, a couple of years of Wilko and an exceptionally bright start from DOL, Leeds have always played to their weaknesses and rarely to their strengths. I think that SG has been erring towards caution too over the past 12 months. We're never going to be a team happy to let in 6 goals because we're confident of getting 7 ourselves. Many of our key players are in their early 20s and it's only O'Brien that springs to mind as being in his 30s. Take the blinkers off - we just invested in the permanant signing of a premiership centre back. We invested in a new right back at the start of the season. The LUSC used to (used to - I've no idea these days) give the impression that it was a rotten organisation that existed for the sole benefit of certain of its members and officials. There were constant scandals about murky finances, about unfair ticket allocation, about unwarranted secrecy and about abuse of process. Most people who get actively involved in football adminisrration - fans group or director - are not doing it for purely altruistic reasons. Even a Jack Walker had his own agenda. [LU] From today's Gruniad
Leeds United v Barcelona (1975)http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TOgh3YK1fyQ The season of 1974-75 was the swansong for Don Revie's superlative Leeds United side. Revie had gone, of course, taking the England job in the summer after guiding his boys to their second league title, but the team was still his. As new manager Brian Clough soon found out to his cost. But Leeds suffered as a result of that brief union as well. Their 74-75 side is generally considered to have passed the crest of the hill, but the stats don't quite bear that out. Though they ended the season in ninth place, they were only eight points behind the eventual champions Derby County. Had Clough not effectively given the Rams a seven-point start during his six games in charge at the beginning of the season, Leeds would have been in with a shout of retaining their title. They were also unlucky not to end the season as only the second English team to become European champions. The highlight of their continental run – which ended with controversial defeat to Bayern Munich in the final – was their control in the semi-final of a Barcelona side boasting Johan Cryuff and Johan Neeskens. In this paper, David Lacey wrote of United's long spells of masterful football in the first leg at Elland Roadhttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TOgh3YK1fyQ. Billy Bremner scored a trademark thunderer early on. Barcelona equalised through Juan Manuel Asensi, but Allan Clarke notched a late winner. Utility man Paul Madeley smothered a disappointing Cruyff, while Barcelona's defence, according to Lacey, amounted to nine men and the goalkeeper. Cruyff disappointed me a little, said Leeds' post-Clough manager Jimmy Armfield. But he is a thoroughbred player and I am sure we will see more of him in Spain. But not for the first time in his life, Cruyff went missing on the big stage. Leeds were the best side for the majority of the second leg at Camp Nou http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GK14TNFn0LQ, leading through an early Peter Lorimer goal, though they had to hold on for the last 20 minutes after Manuel Clares equalised and Gordon McQueen was sent off for (Lacey again) playing Clares with such vitality that it was nearly a minute before the Barcelona player could be brought round and he played to the end mopping his wounded head with a pad. But hold on Leeds did, and made the final in Paris. Had Franz Beckenbauer been rightfully punished for scything down Clarke, United would have won the biggest prize in club football. But it wasn't to be, and Bayern prevailed. The evening ended in a riot http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7-zB6xIx3qg. It got so out of hand, writes Rob Bagchi in The Unforgiven, his page-turner of Revie's Leeds, that Bobby Collins, the club's former captain, was head-butted outside the ground by a Leeds fan fooled by his vaguely Teutonic appearance. ___ Leedslist mailing list Info and options: http://mailman-new.greennet.org.uk/mailman/listinfo/leedslist To unsubscribe, email leedslist-unsubscr...@gn.apc.org MARCHING ON TOGETHER (There's it)

Like your thinking Graham but should have taken your ideas to their logical conclusion. You would then have seen that your basic premise is almost Leveller and they are a downright Socialist grab at redistribution. No - we can't take the money that has been hard-earned over many generations, even in the name of better democracy. However there are mechanisisms we can use to get the same effect without adding to the burden of our most respectable citizens (that parvenu Thatcher has a lot to answer for!). I suggest additionnal votes for business interests (and we can add seats for long standing Corporations such as the City), and for those who's interests are more landed we can create extra seats (and votes) for sompe of the more exclusive clubs such as the Oxbridge universities. Then our democracy will truly be representative for the great men of our nation, and by bearing the cost from general taxation the little man can also be a full participant in our great Commonwealth. Damian (call me Winnie) On Mon, May 2, 2011 at 4:44 PM, Graham White gcwhite2...@yahoo.com wrote: Been catching up on the backlog of e-mails on electoral reform but am rather dissappointed at how timid the proposals are. I mean in this post-modern, post-industrial, globalised, we're all in it together society is it really right and proper that some knuckle-dragging Milwall supporter should have as much say in the governance of this great Monarchy of ours as David Beckham or Sir Fred Goodwin? My proposal is this: every British subject will have one vote (to keep things fair) but then (and this is the brilliant bit) anyone can buy as many extra votes as they like! This will ensure that the people who have the most stake in society: bankers, hedge fund traders, professional footballers, Jonathan Ross, Bullingdon Club members, Bernie Ecclestone etc will quite rightly have more say than those with no stake in society: single mothers, benefits scroungers, disability malingerers, scousers, economic migrants etc. I need help in firming up this idea a bit as I'm not sure if we should have a fixed price vote, say £1,000 per vote, which would mean that a fine upstanding member of society such as John Terry would be able to buy 100 votes with a weeks wages. Would we have different price bands for different elections? Say £1,000 for a general election, £500 for local elections and 5p for a Euro Election (as no-one votes in these anyway). Betty what would be a reasonable price for a vote in the Scottish MSP elections? Or should there be a market in votes? We could call it the vote exchange. Think of all the valuable wealth creating activities the clever financial people could come up with - secondary vote trading, vote shorting, collateralised vote trading. Just think you could borrow money to buy thousands of votes all backed up by valuable US mortgage debts or Irish property. Also should there be an upper limit to the number of votes available or should the Government just print as many votes as required. Clearly it wouldn't be fair to ask council staff to count all these extra votes so we would have bloc votes, say 1000 votes per ballot paper. To save time the ballot papers could also be filled in in advance as anyone buying votes is going to be voting for the right party. Obviously, as we live in a globalised world, non-British subjects would be able to buy votes for use in British elections, as I'm sure that Russian oligarchs or the Bahraini royal family would use their votes wisely for the benefit of our Monarchy. And Ken Bates would be able to vote, God bless the saviour of Leeds United! All the money raised from this could go to cutting the deficit. Re: [LU] [Non LU] Good omen?
Final Salary pensions are perfectly sustainable if they are properly funded, and if the funding is invested into productive enterprise (for want of a better word). Today's problem with Final Salary Pensions is the funding. Public Service pensions are unfunded with the govt making guarantees out of taxation. This is a more a philosophical issue than an economic one. However most private companies pensions are under-funded because the private companies DID NOT PAY THE PENSION CONTRIBUTIONS THEY WERE CONTRACTED TO PAY between the mis-80s to around 2005. Basically stock market returns were above average for twenty years so that companies could argue that they did not need to make their full contributions to cover their pension commitments. Now that the trend is under average they are squealing and cancelling this type of pension. There is no mention of them actually repaying the contributions they missed just as at the time there was no mention of offering their employees contribution holidays either. Because I have a great deal of respect for actuarial science, I think that there is a good chance that if a company paid its full contributions over the working life of its employees, there would be no under-funding of a final pension salary scheme. I really do feel that the problems with these schemes is truly (for once) an example of the bosses robbing the workers. Damian PS my first IS job in 1985 was reprogramming pension schemes to allow premium holes and premium holidays so that the employers contributions did not have to be paid. United have received a number of enquiries about Lees’ availability following his contribution to Bury’s promotion from League Two this season. The 20-year-old has played a central role in Bury’s top-three finish, and the club were bidding to snatch the title from Chesterfield during the last round of fixtures this afternoon, Lees worked with United’s first-team squad during their last two pre-season campaigns but manager Simon Grayson opted to send him out on loan for the second time last summer, following on from a previous spell at Accrington Stanley. His 49 outings with Bury have pushed him to within five games of his 100th senior appearance, and Lees could be given the chance to make his competitive debut for Leeds in the Championship next term. Grayson said: “We felt that going out on loan again would benefit him as a footballer and as a person. Monitored “He’s had a great year, he’s scored goals and he’s been part of a successful team. We’ve monitored him and had him watched a lot. “He’ll come back to us, play in our pre-season games, and if he’s good enough to play in the Championship then we’ll have no problem with him doing that. Yes I was there - not just you mate me too, and the wife. It was the last football match she 's gone to, no way to ever get her to another. I hold the police directly responsible for the events of that day even though there was a minority of Leeds fans happy for trouble and there was also a large contingent of Birmingham fans who were allowed to riot with impunity. I think that there are very tough libel and slander laws in the UK, so much so that people come from all over the world to sue because the playing field isn't entirely level. [LU] Worldnet
Started off the Worldnet weekend by not being allowed on the plane from Amsterdam (security queues too long), finally getting there to encounter a wierd pre-pay taxi system, available to any who wished to brave the torrential downpour and then at last - Boddington Hall. A quick lie down - bugga, all of a sudden it's 2 in the morning. Still - I could take my Satdi morning pre-match asprins without a hangover to dilute their effectiveness. Met up with the rest of the Lards - didn't know anyone though I think I've mt Dean, the team manager, before - possibly the last time I came to Worldnet. They all looked at me as if I was from another planet when I got the Slivovitz out as a pre-match warmup. First match Arsenal. We actually played very well. we were very organised, defended in depth and rarely allowed them a sniff of an opportunity. They still scored though and we couldn't so 0-1. BTW their scorer had done nothing all match - the goal at the end of the second half was almost his first proper touch. I watched Arsenal's next match, same again same bloke scored after not being in it at all. This was unlike us. Our forwards and midfield worked their socks off all weekend for just one goal over five matches. That's a Richard Walker conundrum ;) Second match Bury. For the first five minutes, everything we did right in the first match we did wrong. Bury quickly scored 2 while we weren't organised. The idiot who was playing right back was dropped from the defence and didn't go back for the rest of the tournament ;) The rest of the match was even, in fact we were getting on top and had several chances when Bury scored a third on the break.0-3 Third match Ipswich. Some of the fatest players at worldnet though their average age was appreciably less than ours (we must have been one of the oldest teams in the tournament - Dean thought our average age was around 43). We had all the match, comfortaby playing three at the back even after they changed things and put a decent, fast player up front. We still laboured in front of goal but did get one to give us our only win. One of their fat guys by this time had decided to systematically play the man not the ball and I've got a nice set of stud marks from my knee down to my ankle (yes a stamp, not an over enthusiastic sliding tackle - what is worldnet coming to!). 1-0 Got to go do some work - rest of the report later, Damian ___ Leedslist mailing list Info and options: http://mailman-new.greennet.org.uk/mailman/listinfo/leedslist To unsubscribe, email leedslist-unsubscr...@gn.apc.org MARCHING ON TOGETHER (There's it)
[LU] Worldnet partII
Story so far, a lost Friday evening, 2 defeats and a win Fourth and last group match against Halifax: who were the Veterans competition winners last year. Against the best team in the group (there is a twist on Sunday afternoon) we were again committed and organised. Halifax had two players in particular who were very good, the lad up front for them, we snuffed out. But equally their lad at the back completely dominated the Halifax half of the pitch. The match never felt like a nil-nil, it was fast and committed from both sides so there was always the possibility of a mistake. Yep, indeed, we made it. A leg stuck out in the penalty area and a tumbling forward. It looked very soft from where I was but a penalty nonetheless. 0-1 We were spared an 8 o clock start on the Sunday which was a good job. We'd made arrangements to phone later on the Satdi evening to see about going out. When I saw Dean on Sunday morning I apologised for not phoning. But you did he said giving me a funny look. I have no recollection of it at all - apparently I'd called other people too. I'd gone out with some of the lads from Lens and it's true we had a very good time even though we didn't go anywhere particulally exciting. The highlight of the evening that I remember (!!) was getting the 14 yr old son of one of my new friends from Lens his first lipstick smears off a long-legged mini-skirted Russian blond beauty called Alexandra. Don't say he's 14, don't say he's 14 wittered on the others we'd managed to collect along the way. They'll throw us out. Don't worry girls - we were into them for far too much money by then. There was no way we were going to get thrown out :) Back to the football. I left the rest of the slivo back in the room. I could only manage one bit of bacon for breakfast along with six cups of tea, two obligatory asprins then off to the pitch. Preliminary knowkout round v Stockport. Pretty much a stalemate. The highlights for me were a deadleg (that still is giving me trouble) and missing a header I should have buried because I didn't believe. 0-0 extra time 0-0. Penalties 4-5 10 pretty good penalties, our penultimate one hitting the underside of the bar and bouncing down onto the line. 1 cm too high, shades of the QPR semi way back... Out of the competition before 10h00 tant pis. Bury eventually beat Halifax on penalties in the final. We lost to both of them but neither of them were much better than us. If we get a goal scorer for next year we can win the thing ;) Damian PS lots lots of thanks to lots and lots of people but especiallyto Dean, Roger, Betty and Dave Dowden - Thanks guys A+ ___ Leedslist mailing list Info and options: http://mailman-new.greennet.org.uk/mailman/listinfo/leedslist To unsubscribe, email leedslist-unsubscr...@gn.apc.org MARCHING ON TOGETHER (There's it)

Pitchside drinking was at a minimum. 2 bottles of slivovice and a bottle of Ricard. The new Lards aren't the drinkers that the old ones were ;) It was going to be my last Worldnet but I think I'll be back again next year - I'll have to go by car and make sure we have a proper Lards bar again. There is an idea of separating the veterans tournament from the main Worldnet one, with different dates and locations. I have slightly mixed feelings about this, mainly from a nostalgic point of view. But I think a separate vets tournament would be better both for the football and socially. Re: [LU] Riots
There's been an astonishing amount of Colonel Blimp rubbish spouted on the list about these riots. Probably a good thing because at least it show how many more of us are now part of the establishment than was ever true before. All we have to do is get the next generation of potential rioters in too then there'll be no more problems. As for the Police. I think thay have much much more power than any of their continental European counterparts - the problem isn't there. Maybe it's more to do with the loss of the Mets senior leadership over the last few weeks plus a massive loss of confidence due to the apparently substansiated allegations of corruption at the highest levels of the Met. Where is the Mayor too? Re: [LU] Riots
Lots of responses to lots of points - its much easier down the pub ;) First of all, Steve - I hope your wife is OK and its nothing serious. Then the Met and the mayor: no leadership, who is handling these riots (looting without the rioting as far as we see from afar), Superindentants? Divisional comanders? No wonder there's copy cats springing uo all over the place. Who is in charge? And I hope it's not someone who has accepted bribes (apparently substantiated) from any media group who quite frankly have a vested interest in selling papers during August. As for personal responsibility. Yes. But it works both ways. You have to realise that someone may well be better off looting a Dixons than not looting a Dixons. Where is that person's responsibility? Treat him as a scumbag and he'll always riot given the opportunity, bring him into the system and he won't. Thatcher's ultimate response to Brixton Toxteth BW Farm was to rein in the police (repeal of Sus, racial profiling of Police action etc) and to throw money at those disaffected communities. It worked. The rolling back of those efforts under Blair Brown (especially including many more police powers) has exposed the limits. The lack of current leadership has made the problem worse. What do you do? Try and make things better for everyone? Or not? Re: [LU] Grayson O'Leary
Where does one start?;) Seriously though, the points about SG's acumen (or lack of it) in the transfer market makes me wonder that the problem is not buying a good player, but more having a team blueprint in the head and buying the right player for that blueprint. I'm probably not being very clear. Do we play 4-5-1 because it's SG's vision of how we should always play in the best of all worlds? Or is it because he feels it's the best system to suit the limited resources that we have. If it's the latter, then it makes buying a new player a nightmare. Your ultimate aim might be a 4-2-4 wonder team, but the players you buy to make that a reality are probably going to look crap in the interim 4-5-1 Damian On Fri, Aug 19, 2011 at 10:11 AM, Dr Michael Benjamin m...@myray.com wrote: [] I'd love to hear what others think. Re: [LU] nonLU: bored?
Just checked my past O Level papers (AEB + London + Oxford Cambridge flash cards) from 76 - 78 Only Differential equation questions in the London exam board papers - and they were based on the formula resolution of a differential equation rather than knowing/ understanding either Liebnitz's or Newton's notations. From my optimistic perspective I have to believe that SG didn't want to give it a go.because he has bigger fish to fry. So don't push it lads, I don't want any injuries, any daft bookings and no sendings off. We've nothing to win as well as nothing to lose Onwards and upwards at Brighton anyone? Re: [LU] The most depressing thing about last night......
For me, because of his poor buying decisions (irrespective of how much they cost us) and his poor man-management. We had a very large - but very lopsided - talent pool, that all of a sudden stopped performing and I for one think that O'Dreary is entirely responsible for that. Risdales' guilt is, in order: 1. Not sacking O'Dreary approx one year earlier than he did 2. Not having a real replacement lined up (and maybe that's why O'Dreary wasn't sacked earlier) 3. Poor financial management Damian On Wed, Sep 21, 2011 at 11:56 AM, markbu...@aol.com wrote: Leeds needed to get themselves on the rich side of that gap, and Ridsdale saw that and gambled. But O Leary scuppered the plan, and the rest is tragic history. Eh How is O'Leary to blame for Ridsdale's financial idiocy? He didn't agree the ludicrous salaries that bankrupted the club! Re: [LU] Pete Cass (1962-2011) RIP
What the...! I was obviously kidding myself thinking he was getting better! Betty - 5 quid for a trophy, no more. Pete worried more about the future of his family than any cup played for in a forgotten corner of Leeds. Cash for his wife, cash for his kids - thats what counts. How can we contribute? Damian On Sun, Oct 16, 2011 at 12:34 PM, John Boocock j...@boocock.net wrote: The sad news about Pete comes after we were all breathing a sigh of relief when we heard that he was confident about his treatment in Boston. It really shook me when I read Vern's message this morning. Paul and others had also kindly been in touch, but it was the list that had alerted me to Pete's passing. Pete's acerbic style (you are talking shite Eric) his critique of our team based on his own involvement in the game (the Football Federation of Victoria will really miss him) and the way he fitted in with some of the more off topic discussions (Pete was a techie of the first order) mean that he will be sadly missed here as well as on a number of other Leeds United related internet sites. We can only try to imagine how devastated Pete's wife, Joy and the girls Maddie and Gemma are feeling. I'm sure they are in all our thoughts this morning. Other lists and message boards involved in WorldNET and the Internet Football mob have marked the passing of one of their number by having a trophy named after the person they have lost and presented at the annual event. I'll check with Pete's family and I'll talk to the other IFA organisers to suggest that the Leeds List would like to present a Trophy annually at WorldNET to commemorate Pete. It's the least we could do for the lad. Further down the road, Pete.
