[LegacyUG] Slots for number of children

2008-05-27 Thread Meg Greenwood
I've got an ancient version of Legacy, version 4. Am ready to update
and have a question on version 7's ability to list the number of
children in a family. v4 has the same number of 'slots' for every
family in the entire database. You can change it...but the change
affects ALL the families. I have some with upwards of 14 children which
squeezes names in a small listing, any more are on an extra tab. Those
families with few children show mostly unecessary blank spaces.

I need to be able to show a rare few familes with 14, 15, 16 or more
children with others having only 2, 3 or 4. I need the family page
display to be sized accordingly. Will v7 offer me this option ? Meg

JLB's note was send at 3:00 PM.

So, please don't be so quick to jumb and pounce on JLB's sending a message.
The message could have been worded differently for me, but I am in
California. I do not know what part of the world JLB is, but in different
parts of the world people use different writing styles. It is just so
amazing at the tolarance, or lack there of, of people posting the link to
the download (which probably violated Millennia's rules), but people sharing
with a new user that the ettiquite is to not use Artistic Sensibilities is
looked totally down upon by you.

The way JLB worded the message may have been in jest or in a completely
different tone than you made it out to be. Without knowing this, we
shouldn't be so quick to judge.

Hopefully the person it was intended for didn't take it in the same tone in
which you did.

Can we all exercise a little tollarance, understanding, and patience that
what we read may mean something different in your native land. (As we are
all waiting for the release of v.7 I added patience to this list.)

This is a world wide list. Lets remember this. If there are messages that
offend you, please re-read them and try to read the positive in the message.

P.S. I am not perfect. I haven't always read things with tollarance and

Re: [LegacyUG] Slots for number of children

2008-05-27 Thread Cathy

Hi Meg,

I think you are talking about on screen view?

In Legacy 7 for the Family View, you have a new choice of Best Fit.
You find it at Options Customise - View Tab - Child Columns on Family View.
You can select one, two or three columns - as you could I think in
version 4 - as well as Best fit

Best fit changes the number of columns depending on how many children
in the family.
You'll still need to use the slider to get the next screen if you
have a family with more than 15 children.

Just popping in for a second from Lurkerville. Thank you anyone who
feels a need to run to my defense. But please don't do it here. This
is the LUG, not emotional group therapy. A few hundred somebodys are

The list is becoming overrun with questions from the v.7 users of which
I am not yet one, so I will wait in the wings until we're mostly on the

my 2 cents again.

This is a really nice feature in v7, Meg. My maternal grandmother was one
of 14 siblings, too. It was such a pain to have to be forever scrolling
down to get to those last four. But not anymore! I chose best fit in the
options for children's columns and now Grandmother's sibs show up in three
side-by-side columns. The families with just one kid (or up to five) show
up in one column; those with 6-10 have two columns. Makes it lots easier to
navigate and looks very neat and tidy.

RE: [LegacyUG] Slots for number of children

2008-05-27 Thread ronald ferguson

Penny,

You can globally set the children's columns in Version 6 to 15. The difference
in Version 7 is that there is a globally setting of best fit which sets each
individual page. As has been said for over 15 siblings the scroll bar will
still need to be used.

RE: [LegacyUG] v7 Error 400

2008-05-27 Thread Dr. Peter Wielhouwer
Hi Sherry,

Thanks for this fix. I copied the earlier version of vsocx6.ocx to my
c:\Windows\System32 folder, and it appears to have made Legacy 7 work! (BTW,
putting the file in that folder is a different instruction than the directions
on the website for error 400.)

Also, what should I do with my newer version of vsocx6.ocx (which didn't work
with Legacy 6 or 7) but which presumably other programs need? For the time
being I've set it on my desktop, so as not to overwrite it with the earlier
version.

Peter,

There are a couple of different steps. If saving the vsocx6.ocx file from our
website to the c:\Windows\System32 folder doesn't solve the problem, then you
need to save that file along with the Legacy.exe.local file to the c:\Legacy
folder. Normally that solves the problem and should work for v7 was well as
v6. The key is having the legacy.exe.local folder in the c:\Legacy folder
along with the vsocx6.ocx file.

Thanks for using Legacy.

Thanks for the reply, Gary.
I'm using XP (sp 2); the original vsocx6.ocx version was 6.0.0.52; I copied
the VSOCX6.ocx version 6.0.0.44.
I'll hold off on more changes until Legacy Support chimes in.
Thanks again,

What operating system are you using? What was the version number for the
vsocx6.ocx file before you tried the fix this time? Finally, when replacing
DLL or OCX files, sometimes they need to be manually registered. Follow
these steps for Windows XP.

1. Once your Window's operating system has loaded completely, click on Start
and then click on Run.
2. Next you will input in the Run field a command that tells your computer
to register the DLL or OCX file. You will need to input specific information
including the path and the file name. The following is a template for the
command: regsvr32 \FileName.dll
It is important to note that path is the actual location or directory of
where the file is located. Filename is obviously the name of the DLL or OCX
file you will be registering. Below is a sample command: Regsvr32
C:\Windows\System32\example.dll
3. Once the command is input into the Run field correctly, press Enter. Once
the DLL has been registered, you should receive a confirmation in the form
of a pop up box. This message will list your newly registered DLL file and
confirm that is was successfully registered into the registry.

There may be a similar issue if you need to try the second fix with the
msvbvm60.dll file. However I would wait to hear from support before trying
any of the v. 6 fixes with v.7. It may be a similar problem but need a
different file version than that posted for v.6.

I installed v7 from CD, but whenever I attempt to change a bit of
information on the individual info screen, I get the error message Error
400- Form already displayed; can't show modally and then Legacy crashes.

This happened to me with v6 as well, and I fixed that using the first
 process described at http://www.legacyfamilytree.com/helpError400.asp, and
I tried that with v7, but the v6 fix didn't work with v7. Before I try the

Re: [LegacyUG] convert FTM to Legacy

2008-05-27 Thread Thomas Herson
According to FTM 2008, the Legacy data file can be directly converted to FTM
wihtout going through the GEDRCOM process, as can the files of several other
genealogy software programs. However, when I tried it, nearly 300 records
from a 6,200 record file did not make it to FTM 2008. The people at FTM had
no other solution than to go through the GEDCOM process. That worked
perfectly.

Can that be done?

Sure Valerie if you will email me the file I have FTM and will
convert it to a standard GEDCOM file and then make you a Legacy file if you
so desire. It would be a Version 6.0 file don't have 7.0 yet.. If you have
Legacy it would be easier if you took the GEDCOM file and imported it into
your Legacy program which ever version you are using.

Re: [LegacyUG] Availability for download for pre-qualified V7 folks?

2008-05-27 Thread Melody B
Yet another availability question I'm afraid.

Qualified folks who purchased the CD version have been receiving their
copies of V7.

Now you say that folks that are not pre-qualified (because they bought V6
earlier than the qualifying date for V7) will be able to purchase an upgrade
starting next week.

What about those of us who do qualify for the free V7 but purchased our V6s
through the website? I have not yet received an email indicating that I can
download my copy of V7. Didn't Millennia say that All users who qualified
for free V7 would be able to get V7 before it was opened up for general
purchase?

[LegacyUG] Search

When doing a SEARCH - for an Individual - does it bother anyone else
that the list of choices in Where to Look is apparently RANDOM? Why
not alphabetically? You have to read through all of the choices to

even see PRIVATE as a search possibility - but it is there!

Legacy Deluxe v 6.0.0.190 (latest) allows a search of the Church of
Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS) IGI database. Of
 interest to
LDS people is the baptism, endowment, and sealing dates and temple
  names.
Question: Will Legacy v 7 continue that lookup ability?
The LDS Church is planning a release of a new searchable
 database known
as the New Family Search (NFS). It is my understanding that the
original IGI will be merged into, or added to, the NFS database.
Question: Will Legacy v 7, now or in the future, interface

Re: [LegacyUG] Slots for number of children

2008-05-27 Thread Penny
Very true, Ron. However, my point was aimed at my pleasure in that global
setting in v7. Before, I **had** to choose one or another: either my
larger-families could be seen without scrolling, but left only-kids
scrinched into one little corner on our pages; or scrolling to find find any
number-12s and 14s. I wasn't happy with either choice.

Best fit is so much better to look at while making it easier to navigate
and I'm enjoying this new feature! (Luckily, I have precious few instances
of more than 15 kids born to one set of parents.)

Penny

You can globally set the children's columns in Version 6 to 15. The
difference in Version 7 is that there is a globally setting of best fit
which sets each individual page. As has been said for over 15 siblings the
scroll bar will still need to be used.

They're really not as random as you think. If you look a little closer to
the list, you'll see they're grouped by type - Names, vital Dates/locations,
notes, tags, events, addresses, etc.

Thanks for using Legacy.

The last 3 or 4 times that I have done File Maintenance the program has
frozen with an error message that database was locked - do I want to try
again or quit.

Trying again does nothing except repeat the error - quit closes Legacy.

A file ***.ldb has been created in the data folder and with Legacy not
running it cannot be deleted, moved, renamed, opened, edited or viewed.
Rebooting deletes it, but it returns if I try further File Maintenance.

Rebooting takes time that I would rather spend working the program.

[LegacyUG] Source Detail (using Legacy 7)

2008-05-27 Thread Angela Gabbard
Hi,

I am a SPLITTER with my sources having a master source for each family in
each census. I have NEVER used the source detail. With the new
SourceWriter I am experimenting with LUMPING having just one master source
for each census year.

My problem. in the source detail I added the detail text with all of my
individual family's census details.(ie name, age, profession, etc for
everyone in the household).

I can use that for the first person when adding a master source but for
the next family member when I cite a master source I don't see how to
re-use the same source detail without re-entering all of the source details
all over again. What am I missing??

discussion of this topic in the archives (see link at the bottom of this

Since you are looking at an Event Report for Cemetery, I'm assuming you
have entered Cemetery as an Event/Fact
You may be able to get what you want by tagging the people concerned and
then using the Search List/Name List Print options - print to csv and open

Re: [LegacyUG] Error 3021in Ver 5

2008-05-27 Thread Trippsibs5
Glen,
I had the same error in Legacy 6 Deluxe version. If you feel you have all
Windows and Legacy updates, and your File/Maintenance check repair gives no
errors, my quick fix was to deselect the reusing of abandoned RINs. I kept
that setting for at least a month. When I changed the option to reuse
abandoned RINs, I never saw the error again.
I have a 'vast void' in knowledge of computers programs, but my hunch as
to the cause of the error was simple.
Every individual in my family file was entered one at a time . (No
downloaded gedcoms) I deleted very few individuals, producing very few
abandonded RINs. Perhaps some Legacy update somehow interfered with the
program's search for abandoned RINs, finding none, the error 3021 was
produced.
There are other reasons for the 3021 error than just reusing the abandoned
RINs. The above was more of an easy way for me to ignore the problem, not
solve the problem.

IMHO, I just got used to it, and learned to hit the first letter of the name to

actually in the order of the fields to be filled on the main page, but may
appear random at first. Remember the RIN numbers are assigned at first input.

However it looks to me as though highlighting the Source in the list and

[LegacyUG] Relationship Report

2008-05-27 Thread Scrapcat2
I used FTM for years and liked a report that I'd like to duplicate now that
I've switched to Legacy. I just don't know if it exists or how to find it in
Legacy.

In FTM, I could bring up a Kinship Report to show my relationship to others.
I could type in my cousin's name and learn that she is my 7th, 8th, 10th,
11th cousin, etc. I didn't have to customize anything or print out a report. I
could just quickly look to see if there was a relationship between two
individuals.

Is there something similar in Legacy?

I could type in my cousin's name and learn that she is my 7th, 8th, 10th,

I could just quickly look to see if there was a relationship between two

Is there something similar in Legacy?

Re: [LegacyUG] V7 Legacy - mapping outside USA?

2008-05-27 Thread Kimberly Ryan
Thanks, Cathy and everyone who responded. I checked out Virtual Earth
and it does provide excellent aerial images of the regions that
interest me.

Looking forward to trying this in V7.

2008/5/25 Cathy [EMAIL PROTECTED]:
 Hi Kimberly,

I have very few USA locations.
How well Virtual Earth is mapping the locations you've entered into Legacy
 varies.
Virtual Earth works on current location names so it is much worse at
 automatically mapping an historic location.

There is an option to ask to have all locations without coordinates
automatically mapped. I haven't and wouldn't because Virtual Earth likes
 guessing and often guesses wrong.

Any location that already has coordinates is simply mapped to those
coordinates. If on looking you decide the pin is a little misplaced and
would like to reposition it, you just right click on the spot you want and
 OK the shift.
I understand that the coordinates given in the Legacy 6 Geo-location list
are not as precise as VE but it's something I never used.

Like Google Earth, VE varies in how close you can zoom in to various places.
In London you can get a Birds Eye view and look at each side of a building
from about 20m. For the place I grew up near Margaret River in Western
Australia (how times change, when I was growing up it was the poor relation
and anyone who wanted to complete high school had to bus to Busselton, now
it is known for fine wine around the world) you can only zoom to 2km in
Aerial view but with the map view you can go in and see the street names.

So if you want all your locations resolved automatically, it's not so
good, even for the USA. If you're prepared to get to know the locations and
zoom in on the map or Aerial or Bird's Eye view, you can put the pin
wherever you want across the whole world. However depending on where, you
get more or less help. Looking at Africa - most of Africa you only get
aerial from 2.5km whereas the Island of Mauritius can be viewed from 150m
much better than where I live in the Perth Hills.

 Cheers,
 Cathy

At 08:12 PM 25/05/2008, you wrote:

All the talk about V7 mapping has me wondering. How well will it work
for non-USA locations? How *does* it work? Will it use the coordinates
I have entered? How will it handle coordinates that seem to map to the
middle of the ocean? (Land masses that show up on satellite maps but
 are missing from other maps.)

I ask because I've been disappointed before with mapping features of
other software. If they do anything at all, they tend to move my
locations at the next recognisable higher level location which is not
 helpful.

 Thanks.

RE: [LegacyUG] v7 features I like best ... SourceWriter is among them

2008-05-27 Thread ronald ferguson

Elizabeth,

There may be several reason for using RINs but my main two are (in order):

1) Legacy created web pages have the RIN as file name in their Pedigree webpages
2) Both on other types of legacy web pages and where there is a large number of
individuals with the same names and similar dobs (or other vital information),
one can often only be ceratin of getting the correct one by using RINs.

Highlight a person on the Name List, click the EDIT tab on the right and
you can edit the birth, death, etc data directly. Clicking on EVENT tab
allows you most of the options you will need (near the bottom) to add,
change events. And so on with sources, notes. All this without leaving
the Name List.

Not sure if this is what you are talking about, but -

In the master name list you can just click on a name and then select
the edit tab on the right hand side. There are also tabs to add/change
events/notes/sources and edit father/mother and marriage (family tab).
You can do this in V6 (I don't have v7 so I'm not sure how it is
different).

I never realized I could do this until I tried it after seeing Don
Cook's post. It's a great capability.

What I assumed JLB meant was that having brought up a Master List -
let's say Locations - and selected one of them then having clicked on
Show List, one can, in V7, select any one of those people and go
straight to their Individual screen.

If there is a way of doing that in V6 de luxe I am not aware of it and
have mentioned on this list before that I wished it were so.

I am curious to know exactly what you think JLB meant, that you are

Re: [LegacyUG] Source Detail (using Legacy 7)

2008-05-27 Thread Cathy

Hi Angela,

I can't imagine never having used Source Detail ;-)

What you are missing, I think, is the Source Clipboard.
You can load a Master Source plus Source detail
onto the Source Clipboard and then use that to
attach both to any other event or individual.

If you've already entered the source detail for
someone, you go to their Assigned Sources screen
and highlight the Master Source and Source detail
line you want and use the Copy to Source Clipboard button.

For more information on using the Source
Clipboard check out Help and/or the Training Videos.

Not certain which master lists you're referring to ...

In Legacy 6 deluxe, from the tabbed Index list, which contains every name in
your database and which I use a lot, you can double-click on a name and it will
open to the Individual Information screen/window.

From this screen, you have access to the Individual's notes, the sources, the

Re: [LegacyUG] v7 features I like best ... access individuals from Master Lists

2008-05-27 Thread Trippsibs5
JLB,
I'm thinking you are correct. The Master Lists are accessed by selecting
'View' in the top toolbar. Master lists such as Location, Source, Event
Definition may be viewed, but in Deluxe Ver 6 you can't edit the
individuals generated from this screen.
You can edit individuals when accessed by using the Name List (an icon in
an upper tool bar). Might be what Don was referring to.
Can anyone using Ver 7 confirm this editing directly from the Master lists?
If it is included it sounds most useful.
Regards,
Jane Tripp

Re: [LegacyUG] v7 features I like best ... SourceWriter is among them

2008-05-27 Thread Al Mallory
I just realized that he is not talking about the name list but other
master lists like source and location

. For example if you go to the master source list, select one and
click on Show List you get a list of names. In order to change
anything you need to tag the list or record the RIN and navigate to
change the individual. There is no select capability.

I have often thought that it would be a good feature if you could make
changes from the master list, as suggested

If this is what we are getting in V7 - that's great.

Hi Denise, I'm not sure I'm right, but I keep my files on a FLASHDRIVE and
then also have a place to save them on my laptop and another on my desktop. I
also use a 500GB hard drive to back important files on. This is probably
over-kill, but I hate loosing my work . . . With a flash drive you can also
take it to Research places and download things like a Family History Center.
Good luck I'll be watching to see what others are doing, too.

Carol,

On the new OS-X and an Intel chipset with Parallels, Fusion or BootCamp and
Windows installed, Legacy will work beautifully!

On the older versions of the Mac OS or without the Intel chipset, you will
need to install a Windows emulator like Real PC, SoftWindows or Virtual PC,
Legacy will run just fine, although slower than it would under Windows.

2) If so, what was it tagged as, so you can figure out how to get Legacy to
import it

To check for item 1:
Figure out one or two of the items you know did NOT make it into Legacy
Make a copy of the GEDCOM (call it xxx.TXT instead of xxx.GED)
Load the xxx.TXT file into a text editor (Notepad, Wordpad, even MS-Word)
Do a FIND on a unique word that's in one of the items that did not make it into
Legacy.
If its in there, then look along the left edge to see what FTM called this
info, what field name it was given.
If it is not in there, then FTM did not export the info into the gedcom. You
may be able to modify FTM's export function??

To do item 2:
Assuming the missing field(s) are in the GEDCOM file:
Start Legacy's import, and select the xxx.GED file
When the GEDCOM Import screen comes up (the box with the big Start the Import
button) - instead click the CUSTOMIZE button at the lower left
Look in the UNRECOGNIZED ITEMS box, look at the ITEMS NOT TO BE IMPORTED box,
and even look at the IMPORT THESE ITEMS list - try to find the field name (from
#1 above) and make sure it gets mapped to a NOTES field (or to whatever field
you want it) Note that you might want to put something into the box on the
bottom right (like ***CHECK THIS*** or some such thing).

I'd suggest doing item #2 to a NEW Legacy file first. If it works, make a
backup of your existing Legacy file. You now have 3 Legacy files:
A) The new import that contains your missing notes
B) Your working Legacy file
C) A backup of your working legacy file.
You SHOULD now be able to merge Legacy files A B together so you get the
notes and keep any new info you've added. If it messes up, restore your
working file using the backup.

Hope that helps.
Bob

Ron... thank you for responding. I appreciate your thoughts. The problem is
not with Rootsweb, but rather the info transferred from Family Tree Maker 2006
via Gedcom to my Legacy program. I still have the data from the transfer date
on the FTM files, but some of the notes did not get passed to Legacy in the
transfer.

I was able to fix those that I know about by creating a FTM Genealogy Report
into Microsoft Word and then copying it for transfer to my Legacy file. Time
consuming, but it worked. I worry about those I don't know about, but once they
are detected, I will do the same process again. Where there is a will, there is
a way.

  Many thanks,
  Carol from Arizona

Carol,

I was rather hoping that someone could have given you a definative answer
to this question but it seems not.

I do not know what Rootsweb includes in it's downloads, nor in what format,
but if it is a Gedcom then you can have a look at it in Notepad and see if the
notes are there. If so it would seem that Rootsweb may call them something else
for the Gedom and you would need to check put unrecognised items into the
Notes field - that wording may not be exactly right. You can then download
into a new Legacy file and merge where necessary.

If there are no Notes in the Gedcom then they haven't been downloaded.
Again, I don't know if Roorsweb allows the download of Notes, or you may have
to state exactly what data you wish to download.

To answer your point about pressing a button - I'm afraid not.

Ron, I just gave Dick's URL a try and got the same response 403

Is there a reason why the archives URL ...

Behind all creation is silence. Silence is the essential condition, the
vital ingredient for all that is created. It is a power in its own right.
The artist starts with a blank canvas - silence. The composer places it
between and behind the notes. The very ground of your being, out of which
comes all your thoughts, is silence. The way to silence is through
meditation. When you arrive in your own silence you will know true freedom
and real power. Take a minute and listen to the silence within you. Be aware
of what disturbs it. It could be anxiety, anger, worry, bad memories, etc.
When you are aware, you will know what is draining your creative power, and
you will know what needs to change...on the inside...
