Re: year one '65 gas tank
Jeff, You will have a problem using a vented gas cap on your '65 A-body. The gas fill is located at the bumper level. When you acelerate, gas will wash out the filler tube through the vented gas cap. That's why you can't find a vented gas cap for your car. You're not going to have much choice other than venting your tank the regular way. With the tank off the car, it would be easy to silver solder a brass 1/4 fuel fitting into an upper corner. Then run the rubber vent line up into the body hump over the rear axle as normal. You don't need your old tank for that. Then I noticed it didnt have the vent tube on the gas tank and I had already trashed my old tank! So I decided to get a vented gas cap, that would do the trick right? Well I cant seem to find one that will fit the original filler neck. If I use the original non-vented cap what kind of problems will I have? Re: Air pressure
The proper tire pressure is what's shown on the side of your tires. Usually it will say a maximum load at a certain pressure. On most car tire radials, that's 35 pounds. Kevin, They enlarged the 215, made it cast iron, and called it a 300. Then they raised the deck and called it a Buick 350. Then again and called it a 400, then a 455. All of them use that same front cover, along with the 231. You forgot the 430. Milton Schick 1964 442 Cutlass [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Re: OT--Replacement Headlamp Recommendations?
Karen, I've been having trouble with night-blindness while driving, and have decided to replace my yellow-light halogens on new car. Why do you believe that will help? Contray to popular belief, you need light output in the 563 nanometer wavelength, which is the average for daytime sunlight. Any recommendations in differences between HID, CoolBlue (ricers), and Xenon? I've seen the output from the passenger side of these lights. I'm amazed that anyone really thinks they're better than properly adjusted quad headlights, like in your Olds, with standard Halogen bulbs, instead of the old T3s. I can blast anyone into the next state with the output from my 4 Halogen headlights in my Oldses with all 4 on highbeam. That's what I have to do to convince some idiot in oncoming traffic to put their highbeams down. :-))) Other than those 3 headlights can interfere with my nightvision adaption, because they are too bright and produce a too actnic glare, similar to an arc welder, I have no idea which might be better than the other. I strongly recommend that you consult with your eye doctor for a solution to your night-blindness. I'm fairly certain that he can help. Milton Schick 1964 442 Cutlass [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Kurt is 1000% correct. There is only he said she had stories. Nobody has ever stepped up to the plate with *proof* of one. If anyone says there is, let them bring forth the proof. (Which never starts with I know someone...) From personal experience, I knew guys and one gal in 1965 - 1967 who pleaded with several area Olds dealerships to get a 442 with a 425 or a 425 with tri-power (after the 400E tri-power introduction) directly from the factory. In every case, it was NO. In about 5-6 instances, someone bought a complete but stripped down version 442, plus a max HP rated 425 from the parts dept., and the 425 was installed either by the dealership or the customer ***after*** the brand new 442 arrived from the Olds plant. In one case, that dealer installed 425 had the tri-power package purchased from the parts dept. and added on by the dealership. At the dealer level, the dealer could do anything, as long as the customer had the money and was willing to part with it. BUT, that's not official factory original. It's dealer installed. No one at OCA can say anything different. Furthermore, while I was a speed shop manager in the first half of the '70s, we sold, and I usually acted as the delivery boy on my way home, a lot of speed equipment to Kahan Chevrolet in Lee's Summit, MO, (my hometown) to be installed on brand new Chevys before the customer picked it up and/or shortly thereafter. That certainly can't be called OEM equipment. The items installed by the dealer included everything from Hooker Headers to aluminum intakes and Holley carbs to hot ignition systems and everything in-between. I have no idea how many chrome side mount Corvette exhaust systems I sold them, but it was a lot. So the lesson learned is beware of claims that something exotic is a factory original. It wasn't, for it was dealer installed, and the subsequent owners are simply confused. Hell, the original owner could even be confused. Milton Schick 1964 442 Cutlass [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Re: Re:Roller Coaster Valves
Scott, K...so the proper fix would be to grind the seat/valve enough to make it sit higher in the head. Or like Fred said, cut the valve stems slightly, if the valve stems are too long. Adjustable pushrods, though, might be a cheaper and equally effective solution. But the hassel of adjusting adjustable pushrods is not worth it. That's why most people convert over the adjustable rocker arm systems for a lot more money. Yea...I looked in my '70 CSM and they showed an arch-like tool ( feeler gauge) used to measure installed height but it didn't give what it is actually. Hmm...if the tool was shown, the spec should have been shown. Does anybody out there have the valve height spec? The head guy replaced the exhaust valves but left the stock intake valves. Is it possible that the Intake valves are sitting too high? Could be, but without the spec, there's no way to tell. If the valve height is out, then someone might be able to recut the valves and/or seats and get them back into spec. I'd like to have it right (since I already have stock pushrods purchased) however it might be cheaper for me to buy 8 adjustable pushrods than have the heads re-machined. As I said before, not really. It might not be a bad idea to have another machine show check out thes heads, since we know they're not exactly right now. BTW, why were these heads purchased and not do a valve job on your original heads. You probably told us before, but I don't remember. Milton Schick 1964 442 Cutlass [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Ron, 1) To be factory original, the perfect proof would be the window sticker showing the Olds option code for a 425 engine, either installed at the factory on the assembly line, or installed by the dealer in the dealership's garage. Unfortunately, no such factory Olds option code exists for a 425 in an A-body. 2) For a dealer modification, a paid receipt for a 425 engine, parts, and labor from the dealership showing the dealership installed a 425 engine in the car, said engine ordered through the parts department. Since there is no Olds factory option code for this dealer installed 425 engine, this would be a dealer installed modification to an original factory production Olds A-body. Do you see the difference. One is an official option authorized by the Oldsmobile Division of GM, either installed by the GM assembly crew on the production line or by the dealer. The other is a *MODIFICATION* done by the dealer, which is UNauthorized by the Oldsmobile Division of GM as an option. The modification has *NO* warranty by Olds. Re: Roller Coaster Valves
Why can't you move the piston to the compression stroke (so both valves are closed), tighten up the pushrods so there's no lash and be done? I thought this would be super simple. Or put the piston at TDC firing, which is simplest, and then adjust. However, I don't like to fiddle with 2 small wrenches at the back of the rocker arm on the backside of the head. If that's not a problem... That's why I much prefer adjustable rocker arms. Simple, swift, and sure, with the adjustment right in the center on the rocker stud, where it's easily accessible. Ron, I think I'm beginning to understand but still am a little confused. Are you saying that the 68 69 Hurst Oldsmobiles were basically modifieds with no warranty from Oldsmobile? Nope, that's a totally different animal. Hurst and Olds entered into a formal contract for Hurst to create the HO. That took everything outside the realm of GM corporate for both Federal emissions and safety regulation and the insurance industry. The same applies to the Yenko Chevys and the Royal Pontiac GTOs and Judges. However, the ice Yenko and Royal were skating on was just a bit thinner. GM had them on a short leash on just what they could do and how far GM would go to back them. In Fall '69, the ice turned into concrete, and there was no longer any gray area. The Hurst deal was done with corporate consent on both sides. It's legally different. A dealer installing non-authorized parts on a new car is not approved. At Kahan Chevrolet, when they installed a set of Hooker Headers on a new 1970 454 Chevelle, the warranty was technically void. The owner had to sign a disclaimer that if anything malfunctioned, the dealer was held blameless if the Chevy Zone Rep refused to honor the warranty. Milton Schick 1964 442 Cutlass [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Kerry, 455s were in A-bodies at that time in the form of the 2-barrel Turnpike Cruiser, which apparently didn't have a HP rating high enough to worry the big cheeses at GM, so the cubic inch size was allowed through. Sounds like corporate politics to me. However, I've had and seen different small blocks and big blocks over the years that have had all 4 drain holes drilled and tapped at the factory. That includes a 330 on up to 455s. I've had many more of them that were just drilled and tapped for 2. I think what we are saying is...if Olds did run low on the new 400 motor to put in the car for its early production...that maybe...just maybe they did put the 425 motors in some. I thinks thats all some are saying. They didn't run out of 400Es, and I'm sure the CEO of Olds would fire his procurement manager before he put 425s into '65 442s if there had been a shortage. A shortage of engines would have simply slowed production, allowing the Olds dealers to charge a premium price. That didn't happen, either. I was 18 years old then, and wanting one. I thought I read, a Qjet could out perform the old tri-power, which is why they stopped building them. Now a dual quad is another thing. Nope. I have no idea as to the real reason the tri-power was offered as an option for only 1966 and was avialable as a dealer parts package for 1967. It then quickly disappeared. However, I can tell you absolutely that a L88 427 with Holley tri-power will run rings around and then go off and hide from the exact same engine with a Holley 1050 CFM Dominator 4-barrel. There is no substitute for more cubes and more holes in the intake manifold...And the larger the hole(s) in an intake, the higher the pressure drop across the hole(s). 6 smaller holes are much better than 4 bigger holes. I won't touch the small primary/large secondary arguement on a Q-jet. Just say that I don't like them, and that's from more experience than I really want to duscuss right now. For real serious hard charging with normal aspiration, I want at a minimum 3-2s and much prefer 2-4s, period...And if a cross ram manifold is available, I want it. He told me that the 1968 Hurst Olds cars all came down the Cutlass assembly line with the 455 engine, and as I recall OW code transmissions already in place. The bodies were painted Peruvian silver (a left over Toronado color) It had taken too long to put the deal together so the whole car could not be assembled in house since it was late in the production run. John Demmer came on board to finish the cars at the Demmer Oakland Avenue plant in Lansing. Demmer had been the Oldsmobile skunk works for a lot of special projects. Including the 1966 W30 L69 racing program. They made the tooling for the L69 shrouds. Dave Mauer and Tom Blake Blankenship from Olds engineering, did a lot of testing (racing) using the Demmer owned race cars. Some of you may remember the Rectifiers from Demmer Tool Die. I am by no means challenging anything posted here. I am simply relaying what was told to me by Doc Watson, Dave Mauer and Phil Yakley (John Demmer's right hand man). As memory serves me (at 61yrs. old), I bought the original Rectifier a 1964 F85 vin 804M206072 (I still have the owners manual with the protecto plate). 2dr. post, 4-speed., radio and sound deadener delete, with 1304 actual miles on the odometer. It was sitting out front of Demmer with a for sale sign, so I stopped to see how much. Mr. Demmer was just finishing up a meeting but he took time to tell me that '64 was a former race car that had been recently used as a company car for two weeks. None of the staff would drive it because it was noisy, it leaked when it rained and the women did not like to drive a standard shift. . Since I had gone to high school with his son Bill, he gave me the keys and told me to go check the car out. When I came back his meeting was over and he introduced me to Jack Watson from Hurst. (I had already met Jack as the Hurst Shifty Doctor at the N.H.R.A. Nationals at Indy) John asked if I would I like to see a prototype of a new Cutlass project. Since I was working for a printing company 2 miles down the road and still on the clock, I really did not have time to go to the rear of the plant to see this project. I just wanted to know how much for the F85. I accepted and went with them anyway. There was a silver 1968 Cutlass with blue lace hood stripes, blue deck lid and blue lace strips along the side. Sitting next to it was a pile of parts. A 455 engine, turbo 400 trans, O type rear axle assembly and a set of traction bars made from 2 box tubing 54 long that bolted to the rear axle housing in place of the lower control arms and then to the frame under the doors. I wasn't that interested in what I now know was to become the Hurst Olds. I sure did want that 1964 race car. John said he would take $700.00 for the 1964 F85 and I could have the whole pile of parts sitting on the floor. Plus some slicks and a couple of ring and pinion sets (5:00 to1). Two days later it was all sitting in my driveway being inspected by my racing friends. Not trying to bore the list. Just share a little Olds history. It makes no sense whatsoever though, that cars would come off the end of the line without engines and transmissions. That would be a logistical nightmare. Since this was sort of a fleet purchase deal, it makes much more sense that the 455 and special THM-400 were line installed as the cars were assembled. I never meant that Yenko and Harrell were the only ones who got COPOs. Once Yenko started the ball rolling, all of the Chevy dealers wanted in on the action. It was money. This was a bit removed from the original arguement to begin with. Once the muscle car craze started, all car manufacturers entered into a HP race. Corners were cut everywhere. However, that didn't exist in the 1965 model year with the Olds 442. The craze hadn't quite gotten into full swing. Having a 425 in a '65 442 is like saying that one could get a Pontiac 421 dual-quad 425 HP Super Duty in a '64 or '65 GTO direct from the factory, just by walking into the local Pontiac dealer. Wrong. However, if you were sponsored by Pontiac, Pontiac would ship to your local dealer of choice a Tempest in the white with a 421 Super Duty sitting in it. Re: Gear Vendors Installation, Part 2.
Kevin, What I ended up doing is probably totally wrong. Please bring on the dangers of this installation. There's nothing wrong with putting the crossmember under the frame. It's okay. However, there is one very big item you need to look at. Puting the crossmember under the frame will lower the rear of the drive train. That may throw the driveshaft angle out, which will result in vibration. Check the driveshaft angle. GV should have sent you info on how to check driveshaft angle, because the installation could change it. I have also heard that GV offers modified crossmembers that sit a little lower, but all I've heard of are Chevy units. I doubt that they are going to have a Cutlass member in stock. I chose to modify my crossmember as it would obviously be the easiest thing to replace. If it fits a Chevelle, it will fit your car. They're both GM A-bodies. Chevelle-Cutlass, they're the same. Scott, I don't know what the seller on eBay is offering, but engine bearings and piston rings are the 2 engine items that one never buys on the cheap. Re: new fuel brings the demise of the Muscle car?
Where there is a demand, there will be a supply. I don't believe for one nanosecond we will ever have a problem getting gasoline for our cars. The 85% Ethanol is fine, but it ***will*** require much larger jets in the carb and timing changes. Otherwise, the engine will be toast. Ethanol is automatically oxygenated within it's molecular chain. Without engine changes, the engine will run way too lean and literaly burn up. Methanol is the same way. There is one thing to say though, remove the heads on an engine running Ethanol or Methanol, and the combustion chambers, the valves, and the tops of the pistons are perfectly clean. The engine will be very clean internally. Re: Mondello/ engle cam question
Overall, I'd say that you would notice a little less on low end, around the city, but would see more acceleration on the freeway and open highway. Is that what you're looking for? Are you comparing that to my 455 or the 350 in stock form? The 350. Comparing the Engle cam to your stock 350 cam. As far as rear end ratios, my Cutlass has 2.73's and I would think that the Vista is the same but don't know for sure. And you didn't notice any loss of low end torque in the 455 when you put the Engle cam in? I am also running headers and a MSD ignition on the 455 though. That makes a difference on the 455. I am not really looking for anything spectacular for the Vista just that I have the opportunity to get this cam at a good price and wondered if it would be an improvement over stock or if it would be too big. Like I said at the beginning, the 350 will lose some low end torque for city driving but gain on the freeway. Milton Schick 1964 442 Cutlass [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Re: Intake/header gaskets
Randy, I have some 371 nos (Mr.Gasket) header gaskets,i think they are a bit hard over the years. Someone suggested soak in water a short time,,someone else said sparay them with carb clean. They are the old style thick paper layers(asbestos?)type like these... http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItemitem=4607108897; category=34202 I have 3 sets and would like any suggestions to soften them up. Are you saying they're so hard they're brittle? If they are not brittle and will still flex, ***don't*** soften them up. They're supposed to be hard. That's the nature of the material. Use them as is, as long as they are not brittle to the point they would break. The intake gaskets are also not a steal shim but the thick after market paper composite type,,they are called Segal. I was thinking of a light spray of High Tack(Permatex)both sides to go between the block and the new alum manifold,,they too have aged. Absolutely. Always use Permatex Red Hy-Tack on intake gaskets. Spray both sides. Milton Schick 1964 442 Cutlass [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Re: OT:RFID vehicle tracking and cheap easy fines for speeding.
It's not in the computer. It's stored in the black box. It can only remember what happened for 30 seconds prior to engine and/or electrical shutdown. That's more than enough for traffic accident investigation. It's too much data for the very limited storage capacity currently used. We just had an incident in Tucson where GM was required to retrieve that data out of a 2005 Pontiac Grand Am black box for TPD traffic investigators. The female driver of the Pontiac hit another car with 2 female passengers. The Pontiac hit at 80 MPH (speed limit on city street was 35). The car that was hit was flung almost 300 feet and burst into flames. The 2 females (aged 19 and 21) in it died. The stored data enabled 2 second degree homicide charges to be file against the Pontiac driver. Those charges were plea bargained down to 2 counts of felony vehicular manslaughter. Upon conviction, she will serve about 10 years for each count. 85% of time must be served before being eligable for parole. Since there were no skid marks from the Pontiac, the black box was the only way to determine the female driver's speed. Without the black box, the case would have been difficult. So, it cuts both ways. There can be some good, but the opportunity is there for abuse. The public will have to decide. I already did with my four '64 and '65 Olds A-bodies. So...You get into an accident saying you were only going 45, there'll be a day when the court can get a warrant to purge the vehicle computer and it'll give your actual speed at the time of the accident. Re: DIY Carb Rebuilding
Scott, Joe's right. It's not that hard. Follow the advice in the book and the instructions that come with the carb kit. Pay strict attention to detail. You can buy a 1-2 gallon pail of carb cleaner to soak the disassembled carb in. The cleaner washes off with water. Then, use compressed air to blow out and dry all of the passages in the carb parts. We learned that way a long time ago. Maybe it's now time for you to learn carb rebuilding. :-))) Milton Schick 1964 442 Cutlass [EMAIL PROTECTED] - Original Message - From: Scott White [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: oldsmobile@chebucto.ns.ca Sent: Saturday, March 04, 2006 10:04 AM Subject: DIY Carb Rebuilding Hello all- I had the carb on my '70 350 rebuilt by a friend (who owed me a favor) for the cost of the carb kit so I didn't know how much it cost to *pay* someone to do it. Re: What makes a Oldsmobile a Oldsmobile? Your thoughts?
David, For me, it's the '64 Olds F-85 A-body, and to a slightly lesser extent, the '65 Olds F-85 A-body. In mid-September, 1963, a few days after my 17th birthday (born 4 Sept. '46), my Dad took me to the national new car announcement show for Oldsmobile, held that year in Kansas City, Missouri. 1964 was the first year for GM's new intermediate size automobile. When I first laid eyes on the 1964 Olds F-85 upon the theater's stage, I immediately fell in love with that particular body style. When the 442 came out for 1964½, I had to have one. During the Thanksgiving break in my senior year in college during the Fall of 1968, I found one. My maternal grandmother lived in Independence. We always had Thanksgiving evening dinner with her. After dinner, I drove over to Ketchum Olds on 40 Highway to check the used car lot. Sitting in the back was a black 1964 442. It was too dark to tell anything about her. Early on Friday morning, I called Ketchum's used car department. They said the car had just come in on a trade and hadn't been cleaned up yet. I asked how much they wanted as is. The reply - $800.00. I told them don't touch it, and I was leaving now. I stopped by the bank and was at Ketchum 30 minutes later. The car was a Cutlass 2-door coupe with the 442 option (police pursuit 320 hp, 330 cube engine, 4-on-the-floor, dual exhaust). It had 113,000 miles on it. The front end had been wiped out in the near past, because both front fenders and the hood were new. There was a huge bondo patch in the lower right rear fender. The interior was well used. I loved her. In the Spring of 1971, she first hit the streets with a new life and 482 cubes of might. By the Spring of 1975, with her third engine (468), second rear axle housing, and fourth suspension system, she was in her basic final configuration. Only minor changes have been made since 1975. I will own her forever. She is Thunder Lizard. Your thoughts? What makes a Oldsmobile a Oldsmobile? (or a Oldsmobile owner a Oldsmobile owner and not a GM owner?) This is something that I have been pondering for some time now as I have read various posts not only here, but also in other web areas and sites. I am not trying to start any kind of a war, but I would really be interested in your honest thoughts on the following thoughts; Maybe just to get others thinking about the bigger picture?!? There are several different crowds that flock to various years and types of Oldsmobile's that I have noticed, and some/most view with respect other's choices, but there are a few that are very polarized as to there exact model and choice, almost to the extent that they consider all other Oldsmobile's as non-Olds! Have you run into any of the following - and is it justified? #1 The curved dash owners, to them, seems that this was and is the last real Olds ever made. #2 Pre WWII owners, GM didn't produce a Olds after the war it seems. #3 The fifties owners, people like me who like the idea of a super 88, or a chrome laden 98. Wear the sunshades! #4 The sixties muscle car people, if it doesn't have a V-8 or 4-spd, it isn't a Olds! Good to go straight ahead... and fast! #5 The seventies, last of the truly full size Olds, last of the land yachts! If it isn't big, it isn't an Olds! #6 Last of the Olds V-8's, you know those few hang on A/G/B bodies in the eighties. They may be slower than some of the older Olds V-8's, but you have to give them credit for sticking with a Quadrajet until the very end! #7 Last of the Olds, the FWD's, with all of their technical wizardry. You know these, maligned by many as plastic cars, but it seems that these very same people hold the Oldsmobile name up as the technical leader of GM.. Hmmm, I wonder why that would not apply to these cars also? #8 The Quad four owners, see the note on Oldsmobile technical leadership above! And I should add. #9 The Oldsmobile diesel lovers. Nice engines, wish the plug had not been pulled so soon. They were just getting past the bugs! #10 Those who don't care for the last Olds emblem, for us it will be Rocket's forever, although the new emblem in no way makes those last few warriors to the Olds name any less of a Oldsmobile! Fw: Question for item #8045390901 - 455 OLDSMOBILE FORGED STEEL CRANKSHAFT 400943
List, Fisrt: Is the 400493 I.D. number on a 455 Olds forged crank supposed to be stamped on the crank somewhere? Second: There is a 455 Olds forged crank on eBay at 8045390901 right now. My cousin, Matt, wants to bid on it. The eBay photos didn't correctly show me the forging parting line, except at the bottom, which was unclear, but seemed to be a thin line. I told Matt to ask the questions of the seller listed below. The seller's response is also below. The seller did send the asked for picture, which I can't get on the list but can send to anyone who wants to see it privately, but it showed the correct wide forging parting line where the forging flash was ground off. The seller stated the 400493 number isn't found on the crank. Is that correct??? Is the picture of the same crank??? I'm a bit confused, since I never bothered to look for a forging number on my forged crank 33 years ago when I got it, but I wouldn't remember it anyway. The crank does seem to be a correct forged crank, but the eBay picture still disturbes me. The absence of the 400493 on the crank also disturbes me. Re: Sad New
Ronald, I understand. In August 2003, I ran into a hailstorm just south of Flagstaff, AZ, that had hail up to softball size. All the top surfaces and the windshield of my '97 Pontiac Trans Sport were destroyed. The hood, the roof, grill, one headlight, all headlight and parking light covers, and the windshield had to be replaced. Yes, they had to cut out the roof and install another one. The glancing blow dents on the side were popped out and repainted. The insurance company almost totalled the van, but my State Farm agent stopped it and got her fixed. Hopefully, many of your dents can be repaired by popping them back out without having to resort to actual body work. For it to happen to one of our old Olds vehicles is much worse. If you still love her, get your '64 Jetstar 1 fixed and continue to enjoy her. I would. She deserves it. Re: 1- 1/4 Sway bar
James, I got a new 1-1/4 front sway bar for my 1970 442 and the end link bolt seems too short. can't get the nut to screw on. I'm using poly bushings on it.. Should I use the rubber? There's 2 ways to do it. If you are reusing the stock bolts, then get a very big C clamp and compress the sway bar down toward the lower control arm, compressing the poly bushings, until there is enough room to start the nut. The other way would be to get a complete sway bar end link kit from Energy Suspension, which has new and heavier bolts designed for use with the poly bushings, and use that setup. Re: Intake Gasket, Blocking Crossover.
Kevin, What I have is an Edelbrock Performer intake. Now through the years I have seen people mention it, but I never really got a chance to ask WHAT is the reason for blocking the crossover. I assume it is a heat issue? Yes, as already answered as far as a denser fuel charge. However, it also keeps heat away from the carb to prevent fuel from percolating in the fuel bowls in a carb on a hot engine. Your engine sounds like it isn't stock. You should have no trouble with cold weather driving with the heat crossover blocked. If you do decide to block the heat crossover passage, I believe it's better to block it in the intake manifold as opposed to blocking it in the heads. Milton Schick 1964 442 Cutlass [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Re: Shock Suggestions, Thanks again., and the Toyota dealer that fixed my OLDS.
Kevin, I asked a while back about shock recommendations. I decided that pricier must be better and went with the Edelbrock IAS shocks. Kind of a nightmare to get them though. I called Summit Racing. I finally have all 4 shocks in. I hope they don't suck. I regret that you had problems with both the vendor and a defective shock, but the IAS shocks have been perfect for me. When we used to have pure hydraulic shocks, the Hurst/Gabriel 3 position shocks set on extra firm and the Gabriel Striders (front) and Adjustable E (rear) 3 position shocks all set on extra firm were my gold standard. With the advent of gas shocks, the older Gabriels disappeared. It took me forever to fine a decent shock. Finally, I found Edelbrock's IAS shocks. They give exactly the performance I want. Hopefully, that level of controlability and firmness will also be acceptable to other people. I hope you will like the IAS shocks. Anybody from the south want to trade homes? I hate cold. I can't trade homes, but Tucson is as close to Heaven as it can get. Have fun Oldsmobuddies. I know I will. :-))) Milton Schick 1964 442 Cutlass [EMAIL PROTECTED]

To me, that makes absolutely no sense and could be construed to be a civil rights violation, like pre-approved renters. I'm sure you are aware of discriminatory renting and lending practices. It would seem to me that someone could make the same case for pre-approved bidders...a restriction on free trade and pre-determining who has the privilege, not the right, of bidding on an auction. Someone might want to ask eBay about that. Wouldn't it be fun to see eBay nailed for potential civil rights violations by the Feds. :-))) I can guarantee you that if someone ever tells me that I'm not pre-approved to bid on an auction that I want to bid on, there-will-be-Holy-Hell-to-pay! James, I have the Poly end link kit for it. That is the kit that does not work. I guess I will have to get a new end link bolt for it. In that case, contact Energy Suspension at once. The vendor you bought it from gave you the wrong kit number. There are 10 different kits with 3 different ones for all Olds. You should be using Energy Suspension part # 9.8118 for a '64-'72 A-Body. If you have the correct kit number, the crush range on the poly bushings will be in the right zone for your car with the correct length bolt and sleeve in the kit. If the kit didn't come from Energy Suspension, the chart below will give you the correct sleeve length of 2 7/8. 400 big block 4 barrel 2(dual exahust) For 1965 to 1969. = Huh, the '66 tri-carbs buck that idea. Come on guys, quit splitting hairs. The '66 442 base option was a 4 barrel. The 3x2 (6 barrel) was an add-on option to the '66 442 and was very limited. In '67, the 3x2 package wasn't even an option and was only available from the Olds parts dept. and for dealer add-on. Re: Another engine builder asserts Olds superiority
What he said is true. The race version of the 455 Olds Hemi the Olds RE engine lab was going to build would have been so far ahead of a Mopar 426 Hemi, Mopar wouldn't have been able to see daylight. I never talk about it, because nobody would believe me. (Remember the guy I got into the argument with about BBO versus BBC on this list about 4 years ago?) That guy with the heads has been there and done that. He walks the walk and talks the talk. He's also right about something else. **No** Olds needs anything else on her 2-bolt main caps as long as she is normally aspirated. A girdle is only needed for a blower or turbo-charger, just like every other engine needs one then, including 4-bolt main Chevys. No, I don't know who he is. Never met the man, I don't think. Re: Further Questions- Blocking Intake Crossovers
Kevin, My car is a '72 Cutlass Supreme. I have a 455 with an edelbrock performer intake. I'm running a Holley 750 carb with an electric choke. I drive the car on summer weekends, and to car shows. Maybe 1000 miles a year, never in the cold, unless perhaps a spring show. With my electric choke, will blocking the crossover be a factor? I don't believe blocking the intake manifold heat crossover would hurt you. That's my opinion. Another factor that I have noticed is that I tend to occasionally lose fuel pressure in my gauge (near the carb) after the car is hot. My feeling is that perhaps the fuel is percolating and dumping into the motor. Once in a while I get a very rich start. Would blocking the crossover make enough difference in the intake temperature to perhaps curb this issue a little? Do you have a heat insulator under the Holley? It sounds like you don't, and the heat is boiling the gas in the float bowls. I use both a heat spacer under the carb and a blocked manifold. Eventually, you may experience vapor lock in the fuel line, if you are using a steel fuel line. If you are using hose, then that may be the only reason you haven't vapor locked yet. Scott, I havent sent any emails in a while but wanted to comment on this.I have seen an original 72 Cutlass 4 door cop car. A guy has one up here near Seattle, I think he may even be Canadian. It was a V-Coded car and had a single snorkel 442 air cleaner setup that would have been seen on the V-Coded Supreme. It had S style grills and the manifold and heads like a W-30 which is the V code I guess. It also had the spotlight and all the police trimmings. If I remember correctly it had a Tic Tock Tach and a tag on the speedometer. If it shows up at a show again I will be sure to document the heck out of it. Sure, there were a lot of A-Body cop cars. Remember, the 1964 442 option was only the police interceptor pursuit option for a '64 A-Body. The 4-speed even went with it, because the Jetaway wasn't rated at that time as being able to handle the abuse. And before someone quibbles about 4-speeds in cop cars, the '67-'68 Mopar freeway interceptor police option was a bench seat 4-door with a 426 4-barrel Hemi engine (real HP rating was 485 at the crank) with a 4-speed, not with a TorkFlyte, which I never understood. Kansas City, MO, PD had 6 of them. Milton Schick 1964 442 Cutlass [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Scott, He's measured the rods and they're in the middle of spec. He's also measured the crank which is on the narrow end of spec, leaving me with apporx. .002 oil clearance. 0.002 is fine. What bearing clearance on the rods and mains were you planning on running? He says that It's within spec and you could put in a set of standard bearings and go, just that my oil pressure, when hot, would drop at idle. You'll never see a pressure difference between 0.0015 and 0.002. Also, I thought you were going to use a high volume Melling oil pump. You'll have more pressure than stock. Do you know how much oil pressure you'll probably have? He says that it would have enough pressure but that lower pressures sometimes make guys nervous and he was going to leave it up to me to decide. He sure wouldn't like my clearance specs. On Thunder and other race engines, I run Clevite 77 bearings with 0.0035 on the mains and 0.0025 on the rods. I have a hot oil pressure at 1500 RPM of 45 pounds and 25 pounds at my 1000 RPM idle. I use straight weight 40 oil. That's more than enough. For a more stock engine, I'd use 0.0025 on the mains and 0.002 on the rods with 30 weight oil. The hot oil pressures should be about what Thunder has now, above. Milton Schick 1964 442 Cutlass [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Kevin, I to like to see higher than 7 PSI at idle, but most race engine builders insist this is enough. If they do, they're nuts. :-))) I prefer a minimum of 15 to be on the safe side. I agree with you. 20 is better. Milton Schick 1964 442 Cutlass [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Re: Crank grind
Scott, Um... Since I've never done a bottom end, I don't know. How much *should* there be? Directly from the Olds shop manual with minimum and maximum clearances: Mains #1-4 = 0.0015 to 0.0031 Main #5 = 0.002 to 0.0034 Rods = 0.0008 to 0.0018 For a high performance Olds engine that will rev into the 6000-7000 RPM range, I like 0.0035 on all of the mains and 0.0025 on the rods with 40 weight oil. For a more stock engine, lightly warmed up (which is about the only way I'll build a stock engine) at 5000 RPM maximum, I would use 0.0025 on all of the mains and 0.0015 on the rods with 30 weight oil. I would use a HV oil pump with 8 quart oil pan on the HP engine and a HV oil pump with a 7 quart oil pan on the more stock engine. All engines will get a windage tray. I also use engine oil coolers on both. Also, I thought you were going to use a high volume Melling oil pump. I've purchased a Melling M22 (IIRC). I thought it was a stock replacement. http://www.melling.com/products/melling_catalog.pdf on page 27. OIL PUMPS Part # M-22FHV HI VOL PUMP-25% ADD'L VOL OF OIL THAN STOCK PUMP. NOTE: THIS HI VOL PUMP IS MANUFACTURED W/BOLT ON TYPE FLANGE AND A CHAMFERED HOLE. EITHER A BOLT ON OR PRESS ON SCREEN CAN BE USED Is this the pump you purchased or did you get a M-22? I thought in a pervious E-mail you were going to use the Melling high volume oil pump? Also go here for info about oil pumps and how they work: http://www.melling.com/support/bulletins/default.asp REQUIRED READING FOR ANYONE WHO BUILDS AN OLDS ENGINE!!! It will not pump the oil pan dry. Both solid and hydraulic lifters have metering valves to limit flow of the oil to the top of the engine. If a pan is pumped dry, it is because the holes that drain oil back to the pan are plugged. If the high volume pump is also higher pressure, there will be a slight increase in flow to the top. Which is exactly why it is vital in an Olds engine to make sure all oil return passages are opened up for quick oil return flow to the oil pan. If the oil can't get back to the oil pan fast enough, a high volume oil pump can pump the oil pan dry under certain extreme high RPM conditions. That's what I was trying to get at before. Stock applications with a stock oil pan and no deburring of the block to increase oil return, you can have a problem with a high volume oil pump. That's exactly how the oil restrictor myth for Olds engines got started (and a total ignoring of the built in oil restrictors in the lifters). Inattention to detail when building a second generation Olds engine is exactly what causes the problem of not enough oil getting out to the rod bearings. Nothing else. Yes, Mondello is wrong. Re: Crank grind?
but what's a windage tray? Bolts to the main cap bolts and fits between the oil pan and the rest of the crankcase above it. It keeps the wind (windage, get it) created by the spinning crank and rods from whipping the oil and foaming it at higher RPMs. It also greatly cuts down on oil splash on the crank, which robs HP with frictional losses. Finally, it helps channel return oil directly into the oil pan. I've got a tranny fluid cooler but is it necessary for a oil cooler on a more stock application? It can be cheap insurance for high longivity of the engine. I found my reciept. Says M22F...guess that's the standard one. Sounds like it. So use the stock type oil pump with a stock oil pan. Steven, Then we would need to know what the right side head is (it's unlikely a dealer would need to replace both heads), and then we have the issue of the W-27 rear axle, which is certainly out of place. An average buyer wouldn't add that to his option list, unless he was buying a preformance car. Logic states that car is *not* a performance car as originally purchased. Re: titles andcanadian customs arizonna/ calif cars
Ron, Next I got the 1976 y-76 cutlass s I bought from az. Nj is really pissing me off about issuing a title even after I got a bill of sale from Joe. I can't get a good pencil trace of vin. I even had a friend who is a state trooper write all the info down in the form of a police report which is legal, nj dmv say's they can accept that. What is needed to get a Arizona title. Because I just keep getting put on hold. That could be a problem getting an AZ title. Go to: http://www.azdot.gov/mvd/documents/CustomerServiceGuide_99-0117.pdf and look in the Title section starting on page 14. AZ requires the vehicle to be inspected prior to issuing a title to make sure the vehicle isn't stolen or assembled from stolen parts. Because of the Mexican crossborder problem of vehicle theft, I guess you could blame crossborder criminals for forcing AZ to do things this way. AZ started pre-titling inspections about 35+ years ago. The crossborder vehicle theft problem is really huge, Mexican criminals stealing cars in AZ and taking them to Mexico for sale or chopping. Re: Crank grind, windage tray
Scott, But...which is better, a windage tray or a crank scraper? I'm guessing both is overkill. In an engine where maximum power is required, both are used. For the street, the windage tray is usually sufficient. Right...I thought you could get a rough idea of the oil gap using the above procedure but plastigauge is necessary to get the most accurate reading. The raw numbers will just tell you a ballpark. The Plastigage will give you the homerun. Man, Milton...you're one tough guy to please. I'm looking at the rod numbers thinking there's 5 ten-thousandths of an inch deviance between eight and I'm thinking this is a good thing. Off rods and a crank that's seen 77K of service already, I'm ecstatic.Basically, you're suggesting I spend $90 to have the crank ground and another so-much to have the rods ground to eliminate 5 ten-thousands of variance. I thought I'd be fine because this is basically how it came from the factory. It depends on what you want. Now you see how the factory builds an engine, and what the tolerance stack-up can be like. When an engine is rebuilt, there's 2 ways one can go. Bone stock is simply replacing worn parts and putting it back together just like the factory. In that type of rebuild, no dimensions are corrected. Also, some of the dimensional variances can also be due to heat cycling on new metal. The old engine is now completely seasoned and will no longer change dimension from heat cycling. The second type of rebuild gives one the option to correct all dimensions and blueprint the engine. Blueprinting is done on stock engines and modified engines. Blueprinting alone can be worth 30+ honest horsepower. Yes, just by getting all dimensions precise, fiction is reduced, and free power is found. What I stated above on those dimensions is blueprinting, which is what I would do on the majority of engines, even if the engine was going to be basically stock. Blueprinting will cost a little extra money, but it will give more power, and the engine will last longer. Yes, the bottom end of an engine is built like a watch. It's getting to be a darn expensive watch! Yes, it can be very expensive, depending on what one wants to do. Milton Schick 1964 442 Cutlass [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Re: Compression Ratio
Scott, Doh! I should have remembered that there are neat little devices like this. What should I expect the deck height to be and how thick should I expect the head gaskets to be? The factory spec for SBO deck height is 9.33 (from the Olds FAQ, Engines section). Deak height is the distance from the crank centerline to the flat head surface of the block. By knowing this, the rod center-to-center length (rebuild the rods to equalize this), the combustion chamber CCs, and the exact stroke length, one can design any type of piston they want for any compression ratio they want. For head gaskets, it depends on what brand you are going to use. A typical compressed head gasket thicknes is 0.035. Milton Schick 1964 442 Cutlass [EMAIL PROTECTED]

A 2-speed Jet-A-Way? How long will it be before the 455 eats the Jet-A-Way? Sounds more like a '69 Cutlass with a 350 and Jet-A-Way that someone decided to put a 455 into and kept the Jet-A-Way. Re: ????? ebay
Danny, Milton, I think you left out a word. Insert reputable in front of dealer and your statement will be more accurate. Some dealers will put on any part that will get the car out the door. You have a point. I was fairly spoiled in that Howard-Willy and Kahan were honest dealerships. At the speed shop/auto parts company, the vast majority of the dealers we supplied were honest. There were a small handful who were questionable, but they also were flakey with us. If one is going to be sharky with one's customers, you can expect they will be sharky with their supplier(s). Milton Schick 1964 442 Cutlass [EMAIL PROTECTED] I didn't pay attention to that. Okay, from past experience, I can tell you what a dealer would do in that case. If a head had to be replaced, the dealer would ***never*** install a #8 to replace a #6. It would not happen. If a new head was not available from GM, the dealer would get a #6 head from a salvage yard. The dealer would not screw up the engine by replacing both heads and lowering the CR. It simply wouldn't happen, never, no how. So, that's a '73-'76 350 in a '70 Cutlass convertible. The seller is lying. It's not numbers matching, unless someone really and truly committed fraud and altered the numbers to match.
Re: oh what fun 69 cutlass w-30 ????????????
Ron, It was ordered with the 2 speed, than he purchased the w-30 package, from the dealership. They bolted the parts onto his cutlass s. I understand what you're saying, but...doesn't the dealer installed W30 package come with a 455, TH400, different springs-shocks-swaybars, and the OAI ram air system? Or did a dealer installed W30 only have the OAI? The guy liked to race the car and liked the 2 speed because you could wind I up. ??? You can wind up a TH400. I don't understand. Re: oh what fun 69 cutlass w-30 ????????????
Ron, from what i got it already had the peformance suspension, but the main reasoning for the 2 speed is this you could wind it up and only shift once.. alot of the chevy guys run them now. Actually, there's a long standing argument over how many speeds a transmission should have for racing. There are people who will promote anything from one speed to 6 speeds. Cases can be made for all of them. My opinion is that for the majority of performance work, either 3 or 4 speeds will be sufficient. However, it still depends on the type of racing and how powerful the engine is. the car was ordered this way for insurence reason's i believe. Jeee. i cant get straight answers because the present owner dont know. Figures. the owner of the car asked me today if i was the 69 olds police. i laughed and just said no i'm nosey. Re: TH400 slip
Allen, I just had my 68 TH400 OG tranny rebuilt in my 68 442. I will be bringing it back to AAMCO when the weather is better in VT, yup, it's snowing. The problem now: If I am cruising at 50 and hit the kick down, the engine seems to race freely in 2nd gear and the car seems to not accelerate much. As I let up my foot the tranny drops into 3rd and pulls nicely. The same thing will happen at 20, but from 2nd to first. When I bought the car, this original tranny was in the trunk, and a rebuilt was installed. The rebuilt seemed to do the same thing but only from 3rd into 2nd. On another note the fellow at AAMCO said that the center support was the old style and he changed it to the new style. The teeth on the new one were not as tall. He said the center support from my 68 was used in plow trucks. Anyway, does anyone think the original center support is better, and does it sound like the tranny is slipping? I hope to get the car back in next week. Thanks. Allen Puma 68 442 Actually, it sounds to me as if the shaft seal between the 2nd clutch drum and the 3rd is leaking and not holding pressure. Re: TH400 Slip
Thanks for the feedback! I have a question about the vacuum hose off the manifold. When the previous owner rebuilt the motor he may have changed the cam shaft making it a bit more aggressive. Is it possible that it doesn't create enough vacuum to work the tranny properly? No. The amount of vacuum required is small, nowhere near the vacuum capacity required to operate power brakes. Or put another way, not unless your engine idles at 1500 and you need to use a 9 torque converter with a 5500 RPM stall. :-))) However, you could have a bad vacuum modulator. That should have been checked during the transmission rebuild, or simply replaced out of hand. You could also have a bad vacuum hose. If you are still using the stock steel line going to the modulator, the little u-shaped connecting hose at the modulator could be bad. You might have a bad hose at the intake manifold, if so used. Re: Pistons, CR's, and overbores
Scott, You've opened up a can of worms. Only reason I mention it is the guys on ROP say high compression doesn't play well with the computer. I'm not at all sure why. You can see my post and the responses here. http://realoldspower.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?p=170732#170732 I am very surprised someone running 8.7:1 (probably less) is having trouble even on '93 octane. Did you notice the emphasis on quench and the mention of cylinder pressure? Quench is the distance between the flat edge of the piston and the flat surface of the head beside the combustion chamber. Quench is supposed to provide extreme turbulence in the flame front to prevent power robbing preignition and destructive detonation. Smokey Yunick had some very interesting things to say about quench and how it doesn't work, sometimes. Small block Chevys have a lot of quench area all around the combustion chamber (which is what Smokey ran). An Olds only has quench available on the thin area opposite the combustion chamber. The rest is a heel shaped rounded combustion chamber, almost like a semi-Hemi. It is stated that quench distance should be around 0.035-0.040. On Thunder's 468 with 11 to 1 BRC totally flat top pistons with no valve reliefs, I run a quench of 0.140, with the piston 0.100 down in the hole! That's not supposed to work, but it does, and I have a completely unobstructed flow path across the combustion chamber. She can run on 93 octane with no problem, even with 11 to 1. However, I do prefer to use 114, but she can use 93 and not preignite. That works very well for me. Re: TH400 Slip Up
Ouch! Wait a minute. Your initial post said the engine races freely without the car accelerating when you floor it, IIRC? Is this right? Fred's right. If the engine is revving up, and you're not going anywhere, how did the mech. come up with the idea of a fuel delivery problem? That makes no sense. So what is it? Does sudden WOT poduce a engine that races as if it's in nuetral, or does the engine just pause or bog due to fuel starvation? These are 2 different and distinct problems. engine racing at WOT = something wrong inside the trans, as discussed previously, or even a bad torque converter. engine pausing or bogging at WOT = poor fuel delivery, can be caused by a hole or tear or other porosity in the fuel pump diaphragm decreasing fuel volume flow. Re: New car in the stable
Karl, Way too cool and neat! There were a lot of racers who liked 3-speeds instead of 4-speeds. That's part of the argument. Do you want to run through 4 gears through the quarter or use three and keep the engine at max horsepower RPM for the last 200 yards or so until you cross the finish line. A NASCAR driver would do that. For road racing, 4-speeds might be better, but it doesn't matter on the oval. I liked '66s with the tri-power option sitting on top. He is having problems posting. Here you go Hey List, Well, it started back on April 1. I got an email from an old high school friend that I'd lost touch with. I hadn't seen her since she purchased some desert land way north of Phoenix back in 1992. I gave her a call and had a nice chat. During the call I asked about her father, who was the original owner of a 1966 442, in fact, it was the first 442 I ever saw. And that was back in 1979. Back then, the car just sat in his garage, the victim of a carb fire that only cooked the air cleaner and carb. This was the man responsible for my Oldsmobile obsession. Not only did he give me columes of old Popular Hot Rodding, Hot Rod and Motor Trend magazines, but also a 1966 330 engine (10.25:1) that I used to strip down and educate myself all about Oldsmobile engines. I was happy to learn that her father had retired and was enjoying life, but had moved from Tempe, AZ to Austin, TX. Of course, I had to ask about the 1966. She said when he retired in 1994, he took the 442 out of the garage and parked it up on her desert property. I asked what he planned to do with it, and she said 'I have no idea, but I'll ask him'. Fast forward to yesterday. I get a call from her dad telling me he's in town, and would I like to meet him up at the property for lunch. I cancelled my business plans and headed up north. The area now was really built up, with a housing development encroaching on that 'desert hideaway' as I had once heard it described as, but the last 200 feet was still dirt road. He met me as I got out of the Aurora and vigorously shook my hand and gave me a hug.We caught up on events for a bit, then he says he heard I was interested in the 1966. I told him I'm in the middle of working (still) on my 1969 Hurst/Olds, but told him I always had a found memory of that 1966. We walked up the hill to look at it. It had baked a while in the sun, but the metal was fairly straight, no rust in thelowers at all. I had forgotten it was a post car, but I did remember that it was a 3-speed. The interior was cooked, but the steering wheel was mint. The car only had 72,000 on it since it never run since it was parked back in 1977. He asks me again, 'So what do you think? Are you interested?' I told him I was, but didn't know if I could afford it or could take on another project. He says, 'If you want it, it's yours!' I asked him how much he wanted or needed for it... he says 'No, no, you misunderstand me, if you want it, it's yours... FREE' I could not believe my ears, but I heard my mouth say the words 'I'll take it' before my brain could engage. I still cannot believe this. I asked if his son wouldn't want the car, but he tells me that his son could care less about old cars. He tells me that he was fretting the sale of the car, as his daughter is looking to sell the property and he had no place for it. And went on to tell me that he could not think of a better person to take over ownership of the first new car he ever bought. He ordered the car from University Oldsmobile in Lansing after getting numerous bids from Story Olds and others (he saved all the letters of quotations), and took delivery of it right from the Assembly Plant in Lansing. He never drove it in the winter back in Michigan/Indiana, and moved down to Arizona in 1973. The car comes with the order paperwork, sales receipt, salesman business card, paint chip portfolio, sales brochures for the 1966 models, credit union paperwork, key knockouts, protect-o-plate, recall notices, key tags, interior tags, window sticker, and a decal indicating that the car was picked up at the plant. The build sheet has never been looked for in the car. The car still has 3 of 4 original T3's, and correct hose clamps from the factory. And of course, numbers matching abounds. The car is an F85 Club Coupe (Post) with only 3 options on the window sticker: L78 4-4-2 Performance Package, M14 Heavy Duty Floor-Shift 3-speed and U63 Deluxe Radio. Oddly enough, P26 whitewall tires is listed, but at no additional charge. Total cost was $2700.17 per the window sticker, however he had talked the salesman down to a $2400 'out the door' price. So, the car is a
Re: taking a classic to a car wash?
Joe, I've got a sort of odd question. Is it safe to take a classic car to a car wash? I normally wouldn't think twice about it, but I could've sworn I heard somewhere that something about automatic carwashes doesn't play nice with older paints, or something to that effect. My 1979 Calais has built up quite a bit of dust on it from sitting in the garage, and I'd like to clean it up since the weather's getting so nice. The same automatic car washers have existed for 45 years. It won't hurt a thing. If the paint peels, it would have peeled with a car washing wand at the do-it-yourself car wash. Re: taking a classic to a car wash?
You might as well sprinkle some sand on it before you go just to make sure it scratches your car all over instead of just a few places. I've never had an automatic car wash scratch a paint surface on any car. The liability insurance for the car wash company wouldn't stand for it. Milton Schick 1964 442 Cutlass [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Karl, All the paperwork and quote he got all had 3spd floor shift M14 listed. He was dead set on that 3spd. Then I think I know how he thought. :-))) I have a tri-power intake setup... but since I have all paperwork on this car, I think I'll leave it exactly as he ordered it, except for maybe red lines and a posi... and just sell the tri-unit to fund the project. :-) That's a plan. I go pick it up a week from Sunday... Good. BTW, do you have 2 E-mail addresses? I have [EMAIL PROTECTED] and then I saw [EMAIL PROTECTED] , or is the first one a bad one? Bill, switch to 4Bl Go with Torker or o4b? Don't use a Torker, unless you have a high RPM hot engine. Use the O4B or use my favorite, an Offy 360 Degree Equa-Flow high rise. I have a edlebrock carb from the 350 (have to figure which one)and I have a Holley also.Or find a Quad. I'd always use an AFB/Edelbrock with an electric choke. Should I change the cam? (if so what cam)Street/Freeway If you do, don't go to big for good streetability and good mileage. A Crane 803901/H-260-2 Add Rear sway Bar Yes. Milton
Re: distrib choice.
I have a friend with a 69 cutlass with a 455, the guy mostly just cruises his car. But over revved it a few months ago spinning a brg. Well the engine is back under the hood, he wants a msd ignition system. With 6al box, normally id run the mechanical advance set up. But he drives this car as much as possible so I was thinking the msd distributor with vacuum advance. What's the consensus? If he's not a die hard driver, go with the vacuum. Re: RE:TH400 Slip Up
Allen Frank, Frank's correct. The sock in the gas tank could be coated with crud and blocking fuel flow. If that's the case, simply throw the sock away and replace the inline fuel filter you should have up front to protect the carb. Actually, an inline fuel filter should be ahead of the fuel pump to protect it also. Milton Schick 1964 442 Cutlass [EMAIL PROTECTED] - Original Message - From: Frank Siano [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: oldsmobile@chebucto.ns.ca Sent: Monday, April 10, 2006 8:17 AM Subject: RE:TH400 Slip Up Allen I would like to add one more possibility to this problem. The fuel line sock filter in the fuel tank is collapsing under WOT causing the fuel starvation by plugging the fuel line inlet. I had this problem in my 68 442. The car would launch great and run hard up through the gears. Then, just prior to shifting into fourth or right after shifting into fourth (hard to remember 30 year old details), it would fall flat on its face. Though the car is a four speed the symptoms were exactly the way Milton described. I checked the carb for issues, replaced filter in the carb and the in-line filter, and checked the fuel pump. The pump passed flow checks but replaced it anyway. Still fell flat at about 90 mph on WOT run. When I let off the throttle the fuel system would catch up and the car would accelerate again. If I part throttled up to that speed, no problems were noted. Father of a friend was helping me trouble shoot the problem, he knew Rochesters inside out, asked if I ever changed the filter in the tank? I said what filter? Did not know there was one. Dropped tank, pulled the sending unit, and put on a new sock filter. Flushed out the tank. Reinstalled everything. Problem fixed. I do not know if GM stills sells this part, for some reason I think I read somewhere that they don't but I think someone is reproducing it. If everything else fails I would give this a try. Sorry about the racing freely description, my bad. I have enough experience and knowledge in this area to be misleading, but I am learning from everyones replies. Thanks. When the fellow took my car car out, what I thought was the engine roaring was that the engine did rev higher once it drop down a gear, but that it could not rev high enough to increase the cars speed, but as you let up on the gas the tranny would shift up, and now the engine could pull the car better. I don't want to attempt to describe the sound because I may mislead, it just didn't sound like it was bogging. The choke does seem to work well. Fully closed when cold, secondaries appear to open properly when engine is warmed up Allow me to describe something and tell me hoiw close I've gotten to the symptoms. You accelerate at WOT. The engine speed and car speed increases to a certain point, and then it seems as if everything stops. Car speed stops increasing. Engine speed stops increasing. It's as if everything has paused at that engine speed, and the transmission doesn't want to upshift. The engine may or may not have a miss. You let off the gas, and the transmission instantly upshifts. You put your foot back into the throttle, and the engine increases speed again. How close is that to what you're experiencing? If I *have* described it correctly, then you are running out of fuel. The lower the gear for acceleration, the more demand for gas. Why? Because the wind up to maximum RPM is quicker and needs a large volume of fuel very, very fast. The fuel pump is not delivering enough gas volume, probably due to some type of porosity in the fuel pump diaphragm which *will* greatly decrease delivered volume. As the engine tries to wind up in first or second gear, the engine demand drains the carb fuel bowl(s) too quick and the fuel pump can't keep the fuel bowl(s) full enough to supply gas to the jets and venturi clusters. Therefore, the carb and the engine runs out of gas. You take your foot off the throttle for a second, heavy demand is removed off of the transmission, so it automatically upshifts, the throttle plates on the carb momentarily close boosting the engine to high vacuum which facilitates drawing large amounts of gas back into the engine as soon as the fuel volume catches up, the fuel pump has a split second to catch up and get some fuel into the fuel bowl(s), the engine drops to a lower RPM due to the upshift, so the fuel pump can catch up to the lowered RPM and fuel flow demand, the high engine vacuum causes the carb to flow gas again, the engine catches gas and then makes power, and you surge ahead. ***If*** everything matches what I've just said, and the reasons for it, you have a bad fuel pump. The transmission is okay. I suspect this situation due to your statement about no fuel being available

Re: Firewall grommets
Kevin, so how about this: Does anyone know of a source for the big honking (1.75 hole) grommet on the firewall that the AC vacuum lines go through? I can't find it at Year One, Brother's, The Parts Place, or OPG. While I'm at it, a new on for the 1.25 hole above the fuse block would be nice, too. For decades, I've always made my own. I was never able to find the size I wanted for larger holes that handled wiring and tubing through panels. That applied whether I was working on a car or building custom test equipment or experimental apparatus. Take either 1/8, 3/16, or 1/4 (or even bigger, if necessary) vacuum tubing and slice it with a razor blade along one side in a straight line. The ID of the tubing is determined by how thick the panel hole edge is that needs to covered. Take the split tubing and feed it into the hole edge. Cut the length to fit. The tension of the tubing should hold it in place. Experiment to get the right fit. If necessary, put a little contact cement inside the tubing to glue it in place around the hole, if the tubing insists on being uncooperative. That procedure should fix most of your hole pass-through grommet problems. For holes of 1/2 and smaller, the tubing method is a bit hard, but it can be done. At least it's a cheap method.
