Anyone have the IRiver SlimX 550 player?

2004-04-12 Thread Matthew Bullis
Hello, the remote control for my RioVolt SP250 is wearing down as far as the
wire on it goes, and will soon break. I don't like the circfle joypad that
the player has, so I've always used the remote. I suppose I could put dots
or labels on the joypad to mark where to press, but only if I have to. I
might get this IRiver player, but wondered if I can expect the same features
in this as I have from the RioVolt? Folr instance, will it play old time
radio, which is at 22050 and 32 bits? Does it have the click click hold
option to change to the next directory, and will it resume where you left
off exactly? Is it easy enough to upgrade the firmware, such as just putting
in the disc and letting it work? Also, will it charge the batteries
automatically, instead of possibly needing to select from a menu?
Thanks a lot.

I hear radio station as interference in speakers

2004-06-08 Thread Matthew Bullis
Hello, it's extremely annoying that I can hear a local radio station at low
volume when I use my computer speakers. The speakers are the amplified kind
with a subwoofer, and so they must be plugged in to operate. I've got them
plugged into a power strip, but switching them to another outlet without the
power strip doesn't solve the problem that I can hear the radio station at a
low, but annoyingly noticeable volume. It makes it hard to concentrate,
especially when I'm doing audio editing. Is there something I can do to fix
this, either by changing something, or buying a filter? This has nothing to
do with the computer, as just having the speakers on will produce the radio
station.
Thanks a lot.

Re: burning gapless cds?

2004-06-18 Thread Matthew Bullis
Hello Hank. In the lossless audio community of traders, not only does mp3
music suffer quality loss, which personally I can't hear, but you will
always get little gaps between tracks which have been made from mp3's, even
if you reconvert the mp3's back into .wav files. For some technical reason,
mp3's lose tracking boundries. If you want a seamless transition such as for
a live cd, you'll need to use .wav files sources to start with. For
instance, if you've just finished putting an album or tape onto your hard
drive, and you want the music to flow smoothly, you'll need to keep the .wav
files around to burn them smoothly from then on. Once you convert to mp3 and
use these mp3 files, the transition is no longer smooth.
Thanks a lot.

subject for ACB Radio's Main Menu. Go to

click on the show date and use the B key in Winamp to skip to my segment. It
explains step by step how to put records onto the hard disc, and most of the
steps can be applied to cassettes as well.

Re: recording from cassette

2004-07-02 Thread Matthew Bullis
The sound cards in the last few years have all had the multichannel support,
so perhaps your speech hasn't talked, or you've turned off your windows
sounds, but it's good that it hasn't happened, because if you're recording
something live, never to be repeated, it wouldn't do to have a screen reader
chime in, or a windows sound happen if it could be avoided. Also, you should
be able to check the what you hear option, and then go back and check the
microphone option afterwords and use both if you wanted. You have to do it
in that order though, because the what you hear option shuts others off.
Thanks a lot.

How do I delete a region in Sound Forge?

2004-07-19 Thread Matthew Bullis
Hello, I have a .wav file which has a blank region at the beginning of the
file. It is zero seconds long, so I can't just delete that section of the
file. Control shift m from the Snowman's scripts doesn't work, as it deletes
the region for the first song. If I extract the regions to separate .wav
files, the first file is empty, and the second file starts the show. I could
keep the file counter at zero and just delete the first file, but isn't
there just a simple way to delete this error? It seems that once you change
markers into regions that you're stuck with the results.

Hello, unfortunately, since you're using the stereo master or the what you

Can an ID3 tagger do this?

2004-08-01 Thread Matthew Bullis
Hello, is there an accessible ID3 tagger out there which can do the
following:
you can select a group of files from within a folder, and tell the program
that for all of these files, you want to put this for the title, this for
the artist, this for the year, and this for the comment, so I could just
fill in these fields once and have the program put that info into each of
those fields for each file selected? This would save a lot of time in
typing. Also, it would be a plus if the program would take the text in the
file name after the space dash space, but before the period mp3, and put
that as the title of the track. Please let me know if such a program exists,
and it would be worth paying for if it does.

Re: Delta soundcard question

2004-10-25 Thread Matthew Bullis
Hello, cd quality sound is 16 bit, and 44100 samples. If you're recording in
24 bit at 96 khz, the higher end audio will not be accepted by the lower
cd-quality. Therefore, in order to retain the 24/96 parameters, you may have
to use DVD audio. I'm not exactly sure about this, but there are detailed
instructions and tips if you search on google for the FAQ on taping with
laptops. A sound card with cd-quality sound will do fine, but I have no
experience with recording digitally. I just plug a cord into the sound card
with my source material coming into the line in port on the sound card from
the cord.

Re: Deleting Regions in Sound Forge - Can it Be Done?

2004-11-15 Thread Matthew Bullis
Hello, please respond on list, as I believe others will want the answer as
well. When you're going through the file putting markers in, you can hit alt
shift m if you're using the Snowman's scripts to delete a marker. Sometimes
this doesn't work, so you'll have to undo that, but sometimes the undo is
way far back. Once the regions are in the file and the file is saved, I've
not been able to make changes to them. I have one file with a double region
at the starting point of a file, so that it makes one region .wav file as a
blank file of 0 seconds, and the rest of the .wav files are the concert
split into the tracks. I'd like to be able to delete the regions, but when
following the directions you've posted, after hitting alt 3, Jaws just says
playlist, and I don't know what to do. I close that window and look at the
playlist/cutlist menu, and delete/cut regions is unavailable. Please explain
how this can be done with no sight using screen readers, if it is possible.
Thanks a lot.

Hmm. This depends then on what version you're running I guess. I didn't
upgrade to version 4, as the version 3 build I'm using is good enough for
what I need, so maybe things have changed. Unfortunately then, I can't help
with it, and my Main Menu review will not help you until you can get into
the menus. Write Flavio, the program author, and ask him what changes you
have made. He's familiar with my audio review, and with the fact that I am

how to access it with the keyboard, if indeed he has changed something
around. Let him know that I do not have the latest version of the program,

Hello, well I could send the good version of the NTrack program to whomever

which he can post to his web site, then I'll send you the older version with
his tweaked config file which gets rid of another obstacle for the blind. I
would definitely get a hold of Flavio, because if you go with another
multi-track program, then Flavio will not be made aware of the problems you
are having. The only reason I don't get a hold of him myself is because I'm
happy with my older version, and I wouldn't know how to describe all of the

Re: A Soundforge Question

2005-02-19 Thread Matthew Bullis
Hello, use the extract options from the file menu, with letter E as the
shortcut key. Go through the box and check the one that says put regions in
the file, and let it extract the whole cd into a file. Then you can work
with it until it's where you want it, and then make cd's from the modified
file. Sound Forge has a track at once burning program, so for live cd's, or
for anything you don't want to have a two-second gap in, use something else
to burn the cd. You'll have to cut the files into regions for separate .wav
files. Let me know if you need more info on how to do this.

N-Track problems are resolved

2005-02-26 Thread Matthew Bullis
Hello, I've been working with the author of N-Track, the multi-track
software, and he has made the latest build of the program accessible once
more. To get the menus to speak, uncheck the icons in menus box in the
options settings. Also, by default, the program recorded two files at a time
for use with two sound cards. If you only have one sound card, and wished to
record in stereo, the button wasn't accessible, and he had to modify the
configuration file and send that to me, but he has fixed this, and now
control alt f4 opens the settings which cannot otherwise be accessed. So go
and download the latest build from the web site and start using and
enjoying.

As I said in my review, the cost for upgrading from the 16 bit to the 24 bit
is the price difference from $42 to $64, but this new upgrade from version 3
to version 4 is about $25. If you've got a registered version of the program
from February of last year or later, it's a free upgrade, but if yours is
like the one I registered three years ago, then you'll have to pay the fee.
If you're going to upgrade from 16 bit to 24, and from the older version to
the latest, it will be about $40. It's on the web site when you're ready to
upgrade.

Is CD Architect accessible?

2005-03-05 Thread Matthew Bullis
Hello, the latest version of Sound Forge, version 8, doesn't appear to be
out yet, but when it does come out, it's being bundled with CD Architect.
Will this extra program be accessible? It will allow users to burn gapless
cd's from the program, respecting the regions you've placed in a file. I
have a lot of concerts on my hard disc, all in .wav file format, and marked
with region markers for making the track marks. Now when I make a cd, I have
to extract the regions into separate .wav files, and sometimes it doesn't
exactly line up seamlessly on the audio cd. This will help a great deal if
it is accessible.

Right, I'm familiar with disc at once, but sometimes Sound Forge doesn't
adhere strictly to the sector boundaries of the .wav files, so even though

There's a tool to combine .wav or .mp3 files.

2005-04-24 Thread Matthew Bullis
Hello, a few weeks ago, Larry asked about how to merge two .wav files which
were each side of a cassette. He got several suggestions, and all valid, and
these were things I did, like combining the files by the copy and paste
method in Sound Forge. However, I'm going to be recieving a large amount of
live concert recordings in .shn format, and it will be in individual tracks.
I'd use my .shn to .wav converter, but then I'd have the time-consuming task
of loading each track into Sound Forge and copying them into one master file
for retracking. I hoped there was a better way, and it arrives in the form
of a tool which will combine .wav or .mp3 files into one file. It costs
$19.95, and lets you join ten times before the demo expires. It's a little
tricky to get going, but nothing you can't do if you know how to manipulate
your mouse cursor a little bit. It took me about fifteen minutes to get the
hang of it's layout. This is just one of the tools available from
www.Splitter-Joiner.com
Note the hyphen in there. Anyhow, it's worth the $20 I will be paying for it
when my audio projects come up, so I thought I'd pass it on for the
archives, if not belatedly to Larry's question of three weeks ago.
Thanks a lot.

Sony recorder with Dragon Naturally Speaking

2005-05-12 Thread Matthew Bullis
Hello, has anyone bought this recorder from either Ann Morris or Independent
Living Aids? How do you like it? Is the sound quality 44100 and 16 bits, and
how come it comes with Dragon? They don't give a model number on this, so I
don't have a way of finding reviews of this product, and you can't return it
because it contains software. I'm thinking that if you can download the
files from the unit onto the computer, that if it sounds as good as cd
quality with their microphone, then this might be faster than listening in
realtime to minidiscs. Does it have a microphone input to hook my own one
in, or a line in? I'd appreciate any feedback on this.

Re: etree

2005-06-11 Thread Matthew Bullis
Hello, ETree is very good. I'm an active member, and provided you are
willing to mail out packages and trade live shows with people, this works
out well. My personal list is at
http://db.etree.org/kb2rza
to give you an example, but this isn't the only show listing format. There
are a few other ways to display your listings of shows. You can browse
existing database entries, but I've found that when you're trying to add a
show not currently in the master database, that Internet Explorer comes up
with a blank page after you enter the show details, and the show isn't
entered. Since people on this list might have trouble mailing out packages,
due to waiting on others to address and send out packages, you may need to
ask for a little more time, and give a time frame, or require a
self-addressed stamped envelope. Or, you could do ETrades, which would be an
exchange of files through ftp sites, which you or the trading party might
have. The file formats often used are .shn files. All of the tools needed
are usually found on the ETree website. This site frowns on mp3 sourced
shows, so this is lossless trading. If you store shows on your hard disc,
they can take up plenty of space. Another file format is .flak, which is
also widely used. If you need help, let me know. If enough people are
interested in this live show trading topic, we can continue onlist. It will
be on topic if we keep to discussions about the tools used to convert the
audio, but once you install them, they are pretty straightforward.
Thanks a lot.

2005-07-30 Thread Matthew Bullis
Hello, I really haven't found a way to mark sections of a file or delete
them, nor to line up sections. I use Sound Forge to mute the parts of tracks
I don't want. Perhaps if you e-mailed the author and told him that other
blind users are enjoying the program, then he would be willing to implement
a build with certain keystrokes. The easiest would be to use the standard
Windows selection commands. For instance, to delete everything before the
cursor, he could use control shift home and then delete, and control shift
end and then delete to delete after the cursor. He is very responsive, so
let him know the problems you're having, and see if he will work on them.
He's made special builds for me and retained the changes once I told him
that they worked, but I think he'd like to hear from someone other than
myself in the blind community.

Re: transferring music collection to hard drive

2005-09-14 Thread Matthew Bullis
Well, I use mp3 at 160 kb. However, if it is possible to tell from your
collection, you might want to put any out-of-print cd's into a lossless
compression format for archiving. Flac will do very nicely, though you'll
have to get the tracks into .wav format first. If you're going to do flac,
write in again, and I'll give further instructions. But for most cd's,
they'll probably be in print still, so mp3 should do fine.

Re: DbPowerAMP

2005-09-27 Thread Matthew Bullis
Hello, if the live tracks are all one show, you don't want to crossfade
them, and you don't want to normalize each individual track. Normalizing the
whole thing is fine, but doing it for each track changes the volume and
breaks the flow of the show. Crossfading is a similar thing, since it
affects the quality of the material. I actually haven't tried the cd module.
I'll have to look into it.
Thanks a lot.

Re: Sound forge Question about left channel to both speakers

2005-10-30 Thread Matthew Bullis
Hello, if all the audio is in the left channel, use the process menu, choose
channel convert, and then choose stereo to mono, 100 percent, no faders.
It's part of the presets in the box. That will get the job done. If the best
of two channels is on the left or the right, and you want to ignore bad or
low audio in the other channel, hit tab till the sound comes out of the
channel with bad or low audio. Then go to the process menu and choose mute.
That will mute only that selected channel. Hit tab till you get back to
where the unmuted channel is playing your audio, and then do the steps
outlined above. You then get only the good audio from the one good channel,
without mixing in bad audio that might be on the other channel. This often
happens with old tapes. That's why I brought it up, and thought I'd give you
both situations so you could refer back to them at a later time if need be.
This comes in handy if you have a tape where the audio only ever comes out
the left channel. The right side is just a tape hissing noise, so better not
to even have that at all. If you record in mono, then you're getting both
left good channel and right empty hissing channel. That's where the muting
one channel comes in the best use.
Thanks a lot.

But you'd still get the hissing from the mixer itself, regardless of whether
that channel is on or not. It still usually makes some kind of noise. I'm a
perfectionist, and do archive work sometimes for personal use usually, and
so this is what I use to get the best sound, by muting the unused channel.

A new public domain sound editor

2006-03-17 Thread Matthew Bullis
Here's an item which was posted to the blind Cool Tech list which should be
very interesting.
Matthew

Hello all,
I have written a new sound-editing application called Audio Magic. It is an
alternative to Sound Forge 8, but it is in the public domain and it is
freeware. It does not yet have all of Sound Forge's features, but we are
only on the very first beta release at this point, and I would like all of
your feedback on how I could improve the interface. I am a JAWS user myself,
so I have tried to make the interface to the application as accessible as
possible. You will not need JAWS scripts to make use of the program's
features; the program will communicate it's information to JAWS without any
other files needing to be installed. This program is also a lot faster than
Sound Forge in terms of saving files, etc. It includes features such as
changing pitch, reverb, noise reduction (coming in next beta), etc. It can
currently save in MP3, WMA, OGG and Real Media formats. More support is
coming soon and people will be able to write plug-ins to support other
formats if they wish. If you would like to try it out, you can go to
http://audiomagic.roachhost.com
and download the latest beta version from there. You can read the user's
guide and other documentation after you've got the program installed.
Documentation will also be available online by the time the final product is
released. If you feel any changes need to be made to the documentation, let
me know that as well. Hope you all enjoy the program.
Thanks,
Daniel

Re: Accessible flash mp3 players

2006-03-25 Thread Matthew Bullis
Hello, I borrowed an mp3 player once which allowed you to plug in your
existing USB thumb drive and play the files off of that. It was only about
$25, because you would have already had to have purchased the thumb drive.
It worked fine, and would have been something I bought, except that I
frequently used it during my breaks at work to listen to old-time radio
shows. It had no resume feature, because once you turned it off, it would
start back at the beginning of the drive. If they made a model which had the
resume feature, as well as the ability to jump from folder to folder, then I
would definitely buy one. The thumb drive I used was my Lexar drive.
Thanks a lot.

Re: BitTorrent Questions.

Hello, there's UTorrent, which isn't even an installing program. You just
hit enter on the file name and it goes. It's very accessible. Using torrents
is not illegal, but the content you download can be both legal and illegal.
You can get UTorrent from
www.UTorrent.com
and you can download lossless live music from
www.DimeADozen.org
and
www.BootCity.org
It may be hard to get an account on those though, because they only take a
certain amount of users at a time. I even had to borrow an account to get
what I need. The concept of torrents is that when you're downloading, you're
also uploading, as others are getting parts of the torrent from you, and
other parts from other people who have that torrent.

Re: torrent sites?

2006-05-10 Thread Matthew Bullis
Ok, there is either shn or flac files. ETree.org is just a database of shows
which are in the collections of traders. You have to e-mail the traders and
ask for a trade, and then you work out the details, whether it be postal
mail or ftp. Dime A Dozen actually has the files, but that depends on the
sharing concept of torrents. If I were to upload a show to Dime, and three
people downloaded, that would be four peers having the show. If I lost
internet, or went offline somehow, the three peers would be left. If two of
the three peers are not sharing the files, then this would leave only one
person available to download from. When I come back online later, then the
download increases for the person trying to get the files. If you're
downloading a show and everyone of the four peers goes offline, then you're
out of luck until at least one comes back online. So, Dime hosts the ability
for the files, but the files are on all of our computers, depending on which
shows we wish to share. If you're going to get into torrents, I would
suggest you use UTorrent, from
www.UTorrent.com
since it's very easy to use.
Thanks a lot.

Re: dvd audio extractor question

Hello, you probably downloaded a .torrent file, which would only have taken
a second to download. You'll need a torrent client like
www.UTorrent.com
and will need to configure that. If you have actually downloaded the
torrent, then you'll need to see what file extention it is, because it may
need to be unzipped, or otherwise unpacked. If you've done that, and you
have a folder with audio ts and video ts, then you need to give DVD Audio
Extractor the .vob files inside the folders in order to get going with
listening or extracting. I hope this info helps.

Re: Cleaning Up an Audiobook CD

2006-09-16 Thread Matthew Bullis
Hello, if you'll use a program called SHNTool, this will fix the problem
quickly. If you'll Google it, you'll find the program. Anyway, put the audio
tracks from cd into .wav format, and place them in a directory with the two
files that come with SHNTool. I use the temp directory I've created. Then
type CMD at the Run box by pressing Windows key R. You're now in a DOS
prompt. Type cd\ and press enter. Then type the directory name you need to
go to, such as cd\temp. Then type this exactly:
shntool fix -s r *.wav
This will give you feedback on the progress on what it's doing. When it's
done, it should say the amount of track padding it did. Type exit to get out
of the DOS prompt. You'll have two sets of files, the new ones being
appended with the phrase -fixed. Delete the others without the fixed
designation and rename the remaining files to what you want, such as 01.wav,
and so forth. This SHNTool has now fixed the sector boundaries for burning
onto a cd properly.
Thanks a lot.

appended with the phrase -fixed. Delete the others without the fixed
designation and rename the remaining files to what you want, such as 01.wav,
and so forth. This SHNTool has now fixed the sector boundaries for burning
onto a cd properly.
Thanks a lot.

Re: transfering cassette tapes

2006-09-29 Thread Matthew Bullis
Hello, it's actually a lower price than $250. Go to
www.ThinkGeek.com
and they sell it, along with a lot of other things you'll probably want to
buy. I downloaded the software, and I couldn't get it to work. I don't know
if the controls are dependent on that software though.
Thanks a lot.

Sound Forge help with mixing voice overs

2007-02-04 Thread Matthew Bullis
Hello, well it's using the technique of voice overs in Sound Forge, but my
purpose is a little different. I've used the paste special menu, but it just
doesn't turn out like I hoped. I have a concert recording where the singing
and guitar is more to one side of the audio track than another. It's
difficult to listen to like that, and I don't want to discard the stereo
image because of the audience ambience. What I figured on doing was having
one file be where the audio is on the left side mostly, and taking the exact
same thing and swapping channels for the other file. So we have two files,
one where the audio leans towards the left with audience ambience happening
on the right, and the other file which is the exact opposite, with the audio
leaning towards the right and audience ambience to the left. I figured I'd
select all the data in one of the files, which one doesn't really matter,
then flip over to the other file and use the paste special menu. I select
mix, and then select the normal voiceover mode. The result leans one way or
the other, and doesn't balance out. This sounds like it should work in
theory. Is there something I've done wrong? If I did a straight channel
copy, then that means losing the ambience on the channel where the guitar
and voice are less prominent. Would I have to cancel out the less prominent
channels first, then add them back in later? Any help would be appreciated,
as I'd like a nice balanced recording.
Matthew
