Re: [Audyssey] Heather Voice in Mota Beta 8

2009-10-25 Thread Thomas Ward

Hi Bryan,
Exactly. Not only was Sapi support problematic, but in the next version
of the engine I'd have to drop Sapi support anyway. I'm currently,
slowly but surely, developing a newer cross platform version of the
Genesis Engine written in C++. Since the newer Genesis Engine is
intended to be cross platform, Mac and Linux compatible, I have to cut
out any Windows specific dependancies like Sapi, DirectX, etc. I'm not
sure how it will turn out using SDL, FMOD, etc but we will see.Bottom
line, I'll have to use prerecorded speech files for the cross platform
games.

Bryan Peterson wrote:
I'd leave it as is as well. The only way you could even come close to
pleasing more of these people is one you've already tried and it
didn't work out very well. I refer of course to your attempt to run
the game via Sapi itself so people could choose any of the voices
installed on their own computers. I'm sure we both remember how well
that worked out what with all the problems people seemed to be having
with their Sapi installs.

Hi Bryan,
Hmmm...If I remember correctly when the uac prompt comes up all you have

I was also quite surprised by that prompt when I purchased and installed

Hi Phil,
Interesting. I actually got my copies of Ryan and Heather for $15 each

Looks like I made out like a bandit. Lol!
Yeah, my copies are locked to Text Aloud, but that isn't too bad really.
I can still use them for converting audio books to audio, create voice
files for games, which was primarily why I got them in the first place.
I generally use Dectalk Access or Eloquence for day to day computer

Hi Bryan,
Yeah, Crystal works out well for Sci-Fi games. Back when I began working
on STFC 1.0 I initially used ATT Crystal as the voice of the
Enterprise's computer. Later I switched voices until I ended up using
Scansoft Karen for version 1.2. Anyway, to make a long story short I've

I may just do that. She was fine for that particular game, but not
necessarily great for every game.

2009-10-24 Thread Thomas Ward

Hi Bryan,
Sure. That's understandable. Heather and Lucy are pretty nice voices,
but they do make several mistakes when speaking words. Right off the top
of my head I know Heather can't say enterprise worth a darn. That's a
very common word, plus the most popular fictional spaceship in history,
and it can't say it correctly. I know several other Star Trek words like
Klingon, phaser, and so on it doesn't come close to saying correctly. It
drives me crazy, because Dectalk Access, Eloquence, and a few other TTS
voices I have don't have a problem with any of those words. So even if
I had the Infovox version of those voices I'm pretty sure they would
drive me nuts after a while do to the mistakes. Then again all TTS
voices do make mistakes, because the English language is notorious for
breaking its own language rules.
For example, most of the time most TTS voices can't determine when a
word uses a soft c or a hard c sound. So when you get a word like Celtic
it says it with a soft c sound like Seltic instead of a hard c sound
like Keltic. I often find myself making ample use of the Window Eyes and
Jaws exception dictionaries correcting common mistakes like that.

Hi Bryan,
True. However, I think the Loquendo voices are majorly over rated. They
are ok voices, do have some improvements as far as being able to convey
emotions, etc but their demos are just that demos. I've actually had a
chanse to try some of the Loquendo voices, and I didn't think they were
that hot. Better than many Sapi voices, true, but not worth the insane
pricing you have to pay for them. Licensing them for games is even worse.

Hi Shaun,
In this case it isn't a soundcard issue. I've noticed that the Heather
voice has a tendancy to pop and click sometimes when saving certain words
an frazes with Text Aloud. I've tried to cut down on the pops and clicks
as best I can, but a few still got through. If there was a better option
as far as a voice goes I would use it.
During one of the private betas I used Scansoft Karen, but I got

Australian accent. Since I don't really have a really high quality
American English voice besides Heather I'm sort of stuck with it.

Hi Bryan,
That depends on which version you buy. There is a version available from
Nextup.com that only works with Text Aloud. Then, there is another
version, sold through somebody else, that will work with Window Eyes,
Jaws, NVDA, etc as well as Text Aloud. The version you want is the one
that says it is fully Sapi 5 compliant or something like that.

Hi,
Unfortunately, I got my copy of Heather as part of a special bundle for
Text Aloud. As a result my copy is locked specifically to Text Aloud and
won't work with DSpeech, Window Eyes, Jaws, etc. Had I known that in
advance I would have purchased the other version out there that works
with everything, but Nextup.com didn't make it known that their copy of
Heather is a proprietary copy. Eventually, I will buy the Sapi 5
compliant version, but I just don't have the finances to do so right now.

Hi Bryan,

Bryan Peterson wrote:
At least you did get a human for the Angela voice. I don't think any Sapi

Amazon's arrow or skeleton's sword.

2009-10-23 Thread Thomas Ward

Hi,
As far as I am concerned the best text to speech voices out there are
those that come with Mac OS Snow Leopard. Some of those voices are as
human sounding as a voice can come, and still be text to speech. Even
better you can crank them up very fast, and they are as fast and smooth
as using Eloquence. Windows screen readers still doesn't have anything
that comes close to the voices available for Mac users. Give Apple a
couple of years and I think we might see a lot more blind users
switching to Mac instead of Windows for exactly accessibility features
like that.
Although, as much as I hate to admit it, I'm very impressed with Windows
7. I've already started the order process to upgrade all of my
computers to Windows 7 in the next couple of months or so. I definitely
will be updating all of my Vista systems first as I think Windows Vista
was a total flop. It is too slow, extremely bloated, and its version of
user account control sucks just to name a few of my major gripes. Then,
I do have one older XP system here, mainly for games, which might get
updated to Windows 7 as Windows XP is really beginning to show its age.

Hi Bryan,
Can't say I blame you. The version of user account control that comes
with Windows 7 is much more user friendly. Not only is it more
customizable, but it doesn't prompt you every five seconds to do common
tasks. It only prompts you for possible threatening security risks which
is good.
The one with Vista is just down right paranoid. It prompts you for
everything. Even common tasks like copying an icon from one start menu
folder to another. Not only is that not threatening, not a major
security risk, but it gets in the way of common day to day tasks with no
way to customize what it does and does not flag as a security violation.
This more than anything else drives me crazy when it comes to Vista.

 Hi Shaun,
In this case it isn't a soundcard issue. I've noticed that the Heather
voice has a tendancy to pop and click sometimes when saving certain words
an frazes with Text Aloud. I've tried to cut down on the pops and clicks
as best I can, but a few still got through. If there was a better option
as far as a voice goes I would use it.
During one of the private betas I used Scansoft Karen, but I got
complaints that people couldn't understand the speech do to the Australian

accent. Since I don't really have a really high quality American English
voice besides Heather I'm sort of stuck with it.

2009-10-22 Thread Thomas Ward

Hi Shaun,
Well, I could use a British voice like Scansoft Emily or ATT Audry, but
again it is probably not appropriate given the fact some people would
prefer an American English voice. Microsoft Anna is ok, but there are
better female American voices out there. As for ESpeak that is
definitely out of the question. I'd sooner use Eloquence before ESpeak
for games. If I could find my keys for my Cepstral voices i could try
one of those.

I am using orphius1 which is well it says uk but it sounds more new zealand

You always could try espeak although it sounds like a can still its ok for what
it is.
I suppoe you could try anna.

Hi Bryan,
Smile. I have no plans on changing voices at this point. If I didn't
like Heather I wouldn't have used her for the game. It is a decent
voice, and I can't please everyone when it comes to TTS voices anyway.
For example, I know several people that love Eloquence. As for me I am
no fan of the voice. I use it for programming, work mostly, but can't
stand it for anything else.I especially can't stand it reading books
from Book Share or books I've scanned myself. Ug!

Hi Bryan,
Agreed. Eloquence is fine for general day to day screen reader tasks,
but using it in games or having it read books is terrible. For one thing
it totally kills the ambiance for me.
Tomb Hunter is a game series with a very strong female character roll.
Therefore it follows the game's narration would be a female as well.
Preferably a human sounding one if possible. Using a robotic voice like
Eloquence, ESpeak, or a male character voice would simply have the wrong
ambiance and feel.

Hi Thomas,
I think people are confused when you use the Heather synthesized SAPI voice
to record what is said in the game.
To get a human to sound as consistent in rate, volume and lack of
background noise would take weeks if not months of sound studio work
instead of the few minutes to have the SAPI voice recorded to sound files.
Plenty of people asked where I got the voices in my games so much that I
finally made a list of them in the instructions.

I think Heather was voted by a game magazine as the most popular voice.

Hi Bryan,
Yeah. Unfortunately it is not always possible to come by actual human
speech for games though. For one thing getting the person to record,
rerecord, his/her voice over and over again to get it right is very
tiring work. Then, there is lots of editing required to make it as
smooth and seamless as possible. That's why I chose a voice like Heather

work well in a game. Plus much less editing and work involved.

Re: [Audyssey] Heather Voice in Mota Beta 8

2009-10-22 Thread Thomas Ward

Hi Phil,
Yes, that was my experience as well. Last year, when I was beginning
Mysteries of the Ancients, I originally was going to have Cara Quinn
cast in the roll of Angela Carter as well as the games narrator voice.
She definitely had a good voice for the roll, was fairly decent voice
talent, but we discovered using her for the entire game like that was a
logistical nightmare. There were several problems.
First, when we started out she didn't have her microphone setup properly
so we did some test runs until we got the volume right, got it so it
sounded good, and got her system set up correctly so what she recorded
sounded the way I wanted it for the game.
Then, she got a head cold or something and she couldn't do any voice
work for me until she got over that. That caused a major delay just
because of something that was out of our control, and that set me behind
somewhat.
Finally, when we got everything squared away, she was over the head
cold, her computer was set up, and we were ready to start work her
modeling schedule picked up. Since her day job obviously takes priority
over the game we both decided it just was not worth the hastle. So I
settled on Heather instead.
As far as editing goes what files I did get from Cara took quite a bit
of editing to get the way I wanted them. I had to trim them, take out
any background microphone noise, etc. It was a serious pain in the butt.
I realised as you did that using a Sapi voice is much much much easier
to work with.

At least you did get a human for the Angela voice. I don't think any Sapi
voice exists, exccept possibly the hugely expensive Loquendo voices, that
can convincingly produce a scream as the character falls off a cliff, into a
lava pit or whatnot, or a cry of pain as she takes a hit from an Amazon's
arrow or skeleton's sword.

Hi Shaun,
In this case it isn't a soundcard issue. I've noticed that the Heather
voice has a tendancy to pop and click sometimes when saving certain words
an frazes with Text Aloud. I've tried to cut down on the pops and clicks
as best I can, but a few still got through. If there was a better option
as far as a voice goes I would use it.
During one of the private betas I used Scansoft Karen, but I got
complaints that people couldn't understand the speech do to the Australian
accent. Since I don't really have a really high quality American English
voice besides Heather I'm sort of stuck with it.

shaun everiss wrote:

its the reason I have not updated my realtech hd because later drivers
click loads more although I suspect the card clicks.

I had a ac97 that clicked loads till I upgraded the drivers.

you should write Lucked and it spelled L, u, C, k, E, and D! for doing

Re: [Audyssey] Heather Voice in Mota Beta 8

2009-10-20 Thread Thomas Ward

Correct. I wonder if slowing some of the words down like bo and locked
would help. Especially, since English isn't some peoples native language.

2009-10-20 Thread Bryan Peterson
That may help. It doesn't happen often but even I sometimes have trouble
with the speach. And for someone who's not a native English speaker it would
probably be even harder.

Vender: No pizza. Only Khlav Kalash.
