Let me explain what I mean. Have a look at: Image - Canvas Size. Wouldn't it be sweet if, in the height and width property field, you could type something like 200+100 or 350*2 and when that field lost focus the calculation would be made and then the value would be: 300 or 700 retrospectively? [Gimp-user] Get interviewed and help the GIMP
Dear list, I'm a usability consultant for GIMP, collaborating with Peter Sikking (interaction architect). To further improve GIMP, I am looking for users to have an interview with. I would like to ask questions about their work. My aim is to provide information and insight about how work is done in the field of image manipulation. Information and insights will be used to further improve usability, interaction design and development of GIMP. You can find more information about my plans here: http://gui.gimp.org/index.php/Usability I'm looking for: 1) artists who do one or more of the following: edit or create photo realistic works, edit or create images for the web, compose images or create collages or similar work (e.g. photographers, digital artists, ...). 2) (visual) designers who are creating interface elements (e.g. icons) for web sites or software. If you'd like to participate or know someone who fits the description above, please drop me a line. Don't hesitate to nominate yourself. You can help me a lot by posting a link to a piece of your work (website, portfolio, blog) and by briefly describing what you do (i.e. the areas you work in). Further information about the interviews is available online: http://gui.gimp.org/index.php/Information_for_Interview_Partners By participating in an interview, you will help improve GIMP for the community and future users as well. If you have any questions, feel free to contact me. I'm looking forward to hearing from you. One is to use imagemagicks 'convert' to create each layer as a png. When I tried this, I got a whole bunch of generically named layers. Most of the conversions had failed, resulting in transparent png's with no content. I found this thread, nearly three years old, on ubuntuforums: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=958470 One of the solutions proposed in it is to use a seperation filter that that has been created as a plugin. Yes I do get the dialog box but I do a lot of photos that are all the same and would like to change the settings to default to 2 x 2 in black. Not sure who would use a 25 px border in bright blue to begin with. In a previous version I'd changed a file, not sure if it was a script or something else, to make the changes and can't seem to do the same in the 2.6 version. Re: [Gimp-user] cropping to a circle
Gidday, Not really proficient at it myself, but had a quick crack at it just now, seems achievable: could you do something by adding a layer mask (set to full transparency), draw a circle on that (hold shift to keep it as circle, not oval), fill circle with white (equals full opacity) and then you should see the image underneath fitting neat in the circle? save it as desired image from there... maybe have to try moving/resizing circle after you can see through, or start with mask as opaque and make transparent circle then invert it?? not sure if this is easy/possible. not sure if similar can be achieved with alpha channels, ?? something to try I guess. I'm still novice on that. regards, shane. [Gimp-user] opening CMYK psd
Hi all. I'm using gimp 2.6.10 on ubuntu 10.10. I have a layered psd that has been edited using a CMYK colour profile. I'd like to open it. When I try, gimp gives me the error: Error loading PSD file: Unsupported color mode: CMYK Googling around gets me some interesting solutions. I found the homepage for such a plugin. It had a warning that the plugin should not be used, with a broken link to a better one to use. I also found this: https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/CMYK_support_in_The_GIMP#CMYK_color_and_The_GIMP This provides some information on the issue, and a link to a plugin package to help remedy. [Gimp-user] Documentation - Behind/Color Erase modes
I do a lot of traditional drawing, so one of the common tasks I perform in GIMP is cleaning up the background after scanning a character I've sketched on paper (erasing stray pencil flecks and so on). I've frequently used the Erase (with alpha channel) to perform this task, because it means I end up with a transparency that I can paint some manner of digital backsplash underneath. My general process for doing this was: 1 - Duplicate the layer 2 - Perform a full Color to Alpha transformation on the lower layer (white as background) 3 - Use the Eraser on the upper layer, with a soft-edged brush, to clean up the background. Any mistakes during the process I can clean up using the Alt (anti-erase) modifier. This yields a smoother foreground-background fade around the edges than simply the Eraser on a single layer. But recently I discovered the faster way of doing this task: The Color erase painting mode, which performs a Color-to-Alpha transition as part of any other drawing operation. So I don't need to worry about managing multiple layers anymore. However I do need a function to perform the inverse, so I can compensate for mistakes... ...and it dawns on me that the Behind paint mode is exactly what I'm looking for here. All I need to do now is set up a keyboard shortcut to toggle between the two modes and I'll be good to go. Anyway, it should be noted in GIMP's online manual (http://docs.gimp.org/2.6/en/gimp-tools-paint.html#gimp-paint-mode-examples ) that the Behind and Color Erase blending modes are inverse functions of each other, with color erase transforming solid color to alpha and behind transforming alpha to solid color. They'll ask for some information, maybe then for some more information and pretty quickly they will diagnose the problem. You'll be happy! Patrick No, I would say it has to do with the GIMP build process itself. Long story, short after 4 re-installs I have come to determine that the 2.6.38.* kernals don't seem to like (some) nvidia cards. I googled and tried tons of things with no luck. So...I ended up reverting back to 10.10 and am hoping 11.10 will actually work correctly with my video card(on a laptop.. so can't switch out!). On 10.10, I installed gimp 2.6.* from apt package and the pen works with pressure sensitivity AND the input devices work correctly for editing. ie, Gimp 2.6.x works fine. I then built/compiled all of the prerequisites(Glib, GTK+, gdk-pixbuf, pixman, cairo, babl, gegl) and then gimp into its own prefix BUT the same issue is happening, so all I can assume from this is that it has to do with some from the build process(or something missing!) However, this time while the items are all greyed out, the pen pressure DOES work this time. The thing that does not work is the stylus/eraser(meaning that they won't 'bind' to separate tools and remember them). Ie, it's working as a regular mouse + pressure. One thing I did see when configure ran was in the optional modules section of the output, I got this: Linux Input: yes (GUDev support: no) While this is a bummer, it is something I can live with for a few months until 2.8 is actual release and hopefully the packaged build will work properly even if I have to build the prerequisites manually. Hopefully by that time, 11.10 will also be released and I can make a test partition to see if it agrees with my video card. ___ Gimp-user mailing list Gimp-user@lists.XCF.Berkeley.EDU https://lists.XCF.Berkeley.EDU/mailman/listinfo/gimp-user

Unstable version of GIMP are not supposed to be used by anyone who wants stable software. That excludes kids as well as 99,99% of our userbase. The splash screen is a combination of puns: a) on newly added Cage tool (since 2.7.2, and it's when this splash appeared) b) on alternative meaning of GEGL as Genetic Engineered Goat, Large (where the fifth leg comes from) And, I dare say, it's also a mild joke on people who have let dirty thoughts on GIMP as in Pulp Fiction movie character crawl inside their heads and build a nest and now can't (and probabaly don't want to) get rid of these thoughts. By the time 2.8 i out, GIMP will have a new family-friendly splash screen without potentially offensive jokes on anyone's expense, although it's virtually impossible to guarantee that (because there are always people who are ready to take offense at something). Re: [Gimp-user] Advice
If you are trying to start a flame war, please just move along. TBH I don't understand this. I started using GIMP about 4 years ago. Since then I have used a variety of other image editors including Photo Shop - not for extended periods of time, mind you. I have found that once you learn one advanced raster image editor swapping around from one to another is not difficult _at all_. Also you will find that by moving from one software package to another, there are differences that can be slightly irritating. Don't believe me? Try some CAD software. I usually get a little laugh when I rotate instead of pan (or something similar) after an absence of using that CAD package. IMO the fact is that if you want to use multiple software packages (even unrelated ones like GIMP/Photo Shop and AutoCad) you have to be willing to deal with some incompatible user interface issues. And even these issues are minor for the most part. -Stefan Maerz ___ Gimp-user mailing list Gimp-user@lists.XCF.Berkeley.EDU https://lists.XCF.Berkeley.EDU/mailman/listinfo/gimp-user

You definitely needs to elaborate if you want a meaningful reply. Are you talking about foreground/background colors in the toolbar? The toggle is right there, and you can use X shortcut too. Are you talking about objects in a photo? You cannot magically swap objects in foreground and background. You can select an object in the foreground though, there is a tool for that: http://docs.gimp.org/en/gimp-tool-foreground-select.html Alexandre Prokoudine http://libregraphicsworld.org ___ Gimp-user mailing list Gimp-user@lists.XCF.Berkeley.EDU https://lists.XCF.Berkeley.EDU/mailman/listinfo/gimp-user

Foreground select tool was introduced in unstable GIMP 2.3.3 and ended up in stable 2.4. It was first implemented as a plug-in, but I can't seem to find its source code and even so I'm not sure it would work in v2.2. I'd suggest going for 2.4 or even 2.6 if possible. [Gimp-user] Screen mode usage
I am doing the following. I have a layer with an image. I then add another layer and select e.g. a gradient with the rainbow colors. This works great when I want to do it with black or the darker colors. I would like to be able to do the same with loghter colors. Is there an (easy) way to do that? houghi -- Always listen to experts. They'll tell you what can't be done, and why. [Gimp-user] Showing/hiding Toolbox and dockable dialogs
How do you graphics tablet owners show and hide the Toolbox and dockable dialogs? Do you map one of tablet's keys to the Tab key? Or maybe there exist another means? Using context/main menus isn't so quick operation, but I only have 9 keys on the tablet and do not want to waste them. ___ Gimp-user mailing list Gimp-user@lists.XCF.Berkeley.EDU https://lists.XCF.Berkeley.EDU/mailman/listinfo/gimp-user
