We can all see how well outlawing drugs has worked, or alcohol in

the

growing it

if you
outlaw tobacco, only the plant will change. On top of that,

asked if that was legal. Guess what? It
isn't. If you have the COA but no CD, you are not allowed to
reinstall the software from another CD. You must call MS, order a
new CD for $45 (that includes shipping) and wait 7 to 10 days.
I tried to explain that a)if they had the COA and that meant they had a
license to run the software, then why would they want to wait 7 to 10
days, and b)$45 was a lot of money for a CD with no license even
including shipping. Heck, $10 would make MS money. The guy
agreed that it did take a long time and that the price was high, but he
pointed out, using another OEM CD might cause problems because: 1)the old
Windows I was installing over might be customized (I told him I generally
erased the drive) and 2)the OEM CD I had might not have all the
drivers. I explained that I could download drivers, and he conceded
I could do that, but triumphantly pointed out that I might not want
to. At that point I gave up.

I caught that at my last live
meeting, it also is not legal to move a COA and OS from a OEM box to a
white box even if the OEM box is destroyed.

If it authenticates it is legal. If you attempt to bypass authentication,
that is illegal. Even if you have to call Microsoft during the
authentication process it is legal. After all, if Microsoft does not like
what was sent in, they do not have to allow you to authenticate
it.
I am speaking of major repair jobs which include replacing most of all
components of a name brand computer. The largest job that I called
Microsoft about was a Dell P4 job. The ONLY part I kept from the Dell was
its P4 CPU. Microsoft approved my request via a telephone voice
conversation. I used the Product Key from the COA on the Dell, of
course.
No matter what others have said in the past (some refer to a scoring
process) I am convinced that you can get Microsoft approval to
authenticate if you at least use the
OEM CPU and the Product Key from the COA found on the OEM
computer.
You can end up with a nice job if you use a quality motherboard mounted
in a quality case. The most commonly OEM parts I move over are the CPU,
the Video Card (if it was not onboard), the memory, the hard drive and
the CD/DVD devices.
If your first attempt to authenticate fails, have the actual Product Key
the OEM used when they installed Windows handy. It may work. Otherwise be
prepared to call Microsoft and explain that you are doing a major repair
job, even if the only component you brought forward was the CPU.

[H] Digital KVM ?

Have a friend running 2 boxen to a Samsung LCD thru a digital KVM (DVI

was fine, one board blew some caps and got rma'ed. boxen up and running.
neither will post hooked up to DVI now on or off the KVM. one will not even
boot.

I brought his video card back and plugged it in and it booted DVI connector
just fine. We will bring his monitor here to confirm 100% it is the monitor.

IS it possible this switching did something to the Samsung ? we think it still

Nero 6.612.
DVDShrink extracts, then calls Nero. Nero burns a

Burncd.cpp Line 5582
I then tried to just get DVDshrink to create just an ISO.
It doesn't create x.iso file but creates a bunch

Nero has no idea what to do with these files.
What's the deal here? Why is it so friggin' complicated?

and the courts once ruled that black ppl where property too.

is a catch 22, you do have a fair use right to backup anything but the
caveat is the getting around the css protection which seems to mean yes u
can unless we say u can't.
this is nothing compared to what MS is up to. they just black listed a
hell of a lot of OEM keys on factory built system to prevent
quote:
Another common misconception is that you can transfer a
preinstalled or OEM copy of Windows from an old machine to a
new machine. An OEM software license may not be transferred from and old
machine to a new machine even if that machine is no longer in use. The
end-user license agreement, which is granted to the end-user by the
System Builder, specifies that the OEM System Builder license can not be
transferred from the original machine to another PC.
:'(

At 12:50 PM 5/25/2005, Bill Poked the stick with:
That is not correct.
321 Studios based their entire argument on the notion of fair
use. Thus, if
you own a DVD you have the right to make a backup copy for personal
use.
The courts, do not agree. Thus the hasty demise of 321 Studios. Their
software
had a built-in DeCSS decryptor.
In order to make a backup copy using software, at some point, one must
use a
decryptor, which circumvents copyright protection.
Software that includes a decryptor violates the Digital Millennium
Copyright Act
of 1998. But the digital cat-and mouse game continues with loads of
software
solutions that supposedly get around that. Though admittedly, most DVD
burning
solutions these days do not include a decryptor, using an add-on from
another
source.
In terms of the MPAA, the Golden Rule applies here: He who has all
the gold

finally I will shut down for the night.
Monday morning, I will have to power off the LAN, and start everything
back up, beginning with the cable modem. Then during the day ... it
will go down again, in which I will probably have to repeat the shutdown
start up process again at least once. Then all of sudden everything
is fine again until the next Sunday night.
This happened last Sunday and Monday, it happened this Sunday and Monday,
and it happened three Sunday Mondays ago. When it went down today I
called tech support. I thought this could not be the modem because it is
only on Sunday and Monday, it is unlikely the cable because I have a
digital cable TV box that works OK. It has to be some kind of IT thing
going on... right?
So I called when it went down this afternoon, they confirmed that I
wasn't getting a signal, but they said they had nothing scheduled and
weren't doing anything. Nor had they been getting complaints. He agreed
that it was unlikely my modem and wanted to make an appointment for a
service tech come out and check the line. I said I would think about it.
Right now I'm really pressed for time and I don't want to spend hours
waiting on a cable guy to tell me what I already know.
If it happens again I guess I have no choice but to have the tech come
out but I don't see it as a line or modem issue that only happens on
Sundays and Mondays?!? It has to be them working on the
systemright? Anybody have any other ideas?

Re: [H] Strange Sunday Monday loss of signal

2005-06-14 Thread FORC5

actually two of my customers are having the same problem,
but there is a lot of construction going on and I wonder if the network
can handle the traffic. some of these new houses have phone, TV, and
Internet included in there HOA fees.
I too am using a DOCSIS 1.0 modem and think even if it ain't the modem
might be worth $60 and I can sell my Bestdata on ebay :{)
I dislike Quest but they are offering some nice deals for phone, TV,
Internet packages.

Last night my connection went down yet again, and stayed down until I
rebooted it this morning, so maybe it isn't your modem. I have a hard
time seeing a quality name brand modem dying like thisthey either are
going to work or they're not.
My seems to be worse this week. Do you know anybody else with a similar
problem, with a cable modem. Unfortunately, everybody else that I know,
that has broadband, is using DSL. .. and I might end up with DSL if I
keep having this problem!

[H] GSM phones ?

2005-06-14 Thread FORC5
Have a friend that is moving to Prescott and ATT forced him to a GSM phone
which has no service outside city, highway limits. He says 4 miles out of town
he looses signal, at first he took the phone back and they gave him his old one
back ( like mine ) but he says Cingular is going to force everyone to GSM, I do
not want worst service. My friend is going to Alltell because they have good
service where he is moving ( and good service in town )
Is Alltell OK ?
DO I need to rethink my ATT/Cingular phone ?

[H] video cards ?

2005-06-18 Thread FORC5
wanting to *perk* up the games and not being able to froggy hop to A64/pci-ex
(currently 3200 barton) looking at possibly kicking my video up a notch
without breaking the bank. Currently a fx5900 128 meg and looking at a gf6600
256 meg ( agp )
6800 agp would kill the whole purpose
$140/150.
looking at a Leadtech ( the fanless design is interesting)
but also a MSI cause it has VIVO and I occasionally do capture. If I go non
VIVO I would need to get a capture card too, which in the long run may be best.
not sure. MSI has a fan heatsink but can not find any info on noise.

Worth it ?
thanks

However, I do know that the Hauppauge PVR-x50 range is good, good

has no fans :{)

It's a very by-the-book Nvidia
Reference Ultra 4 chipset.. I may be totally
alone in this, but if you follow Nvidia's reference, the boards are so
damn
close what sets them apart are the bells and whistles.
So far, I've had pretty good luck with this board. Between it and
the
Foxconn NFU8K Motherboard series, the Nforce4 Ultra chipset is very
solid,
especially if you aren't hunting SLI (or need all the PCI
slots!)

Make sure you have recent BIOS updates (I've gone as big as 120GB on a
BX.) Make sure the drives are set to either master or slave, and
not cable select if they are by themselves.
