are storage sets xplatform?

2001-03-08 Thread mark . maytum

Why?

I have retro running locally on an ASIP server with a RAID array attached.
Backs up to an AIT changer. I want to nuke the array and move it to a
W2K server. I'd like to install retro on the W2K box, copy over the
storage sets from the ASIP server, attach the tape changer, reformat the
array NTFS and just restore all the files into a mac enabled sharepoint. I
don't care about keeping privs or anything fancy. I just want the files.
I've never used a Win version of retrospect before so I don't know much
about it...other than I need to buy it.

As a last resort I could rebuild the storage sets from retro on the W2K
box (can this even be done?) but that would probably take longer than I'd
care to wait. :-)

Can I do this?

TIA,

Mac / Retrospect / Exabyte EZ17

2001-03-05 Thread Mark James

Am having huge problems with retrieving data from my EZ17. Exabyte
documentation doesn't make any reference to MacOS at all (which could be
significant!), so would be hugely grateful if someone can point me in the
right direction.

My problem is that on retrieval I *frequently* encounter hangs. Retro claims
to be 'retrieving'. The clock stops when Retro is in the foreground, but
resumes if I click on the desktop. The Retro log gives no information. Have
left this for over an hour without generating an error message. Hang always
happens on the same files, but they don't appear to be 'bad' ie are
retrievable from other storage sets. At the same time, the Exabyte toggles
between 'read' and 'rdytape'. It looks like a 'misunderstanding' (rather
than a SCSI error?) between Mac/ATTO/Retro and tape drive.

The weird thing is that I retrieved 120gb from the *same* tapes a couple of
weeks ago with minimal fuss (20 bad backup headers). Data was different -
webby content then, print content now - if this might be significant. There
has been, to the best of my knowledge, *no* change to configuration (Retro
Update was installed after the event).

ATTO card is at default values for timeout and PCI burst rate, whatever they
mean!

Have changed SCSI settings on Exabyte, and disabling EXB210 emulation,
without altering the problem in any way.

Hardware/Software:

Exabyte EZ17 M2 autochanger; Autoloader Flash 1.7.4 / Boot 0.0.6; Drive
Flash 8ck3v02p / Boot 8BK1-V0C; 225m Exabyte AME cartridges.

G4/400mhz; MacOS 9.0.4; new ATTO ExpressPCIPSC (SIM 0163); good quality
cabling and termination

Retrospect Backup 4.3, ADK 1.8, Retro Update 2.1

Any help would be most appreciated. That confident was I of my setup that I
repartitioned a rather large RAID with 'only' tape as backup! PLEASE RESPOND

RE: Overland Drives?

2001-02-23 Thread Mark D Mabry

I'm SO embarrassed to have missed this, but YES I've used Retrospect
under NT 4.0/SP4-6 with my OverlandData LXBD7110R for about 2 years (started
w/ Dantz's Gama product). I typically run a combination of disk/tape, and
it works GREAT! I even occasionally have the server auto-restart, reboot to
the default partition configured for use w/ Veritas Backup Exec, autosuck
our Exchange (for message-level granularity) and MS-SQL, and restart the
whole thing back to Retrospect in the morning. I typically have Backup Exec
and Retrospect tapes coexisting in the library w/ no problem.
Simultaneously, I run another Retrospect on another NT4 server for
disk-based quickies. I've also tested this entire process on W2K Server and
Adv. Server, and it works great, even spanning Active Directory.

Happy Mark

Re: auto erase tapes

2001-02-22 Thread mark . maytum

Michael,

Try making a storage set for each tape you want to use in your backup
script. If your backup script is set to "full" or "recycle" (depending on
your version of retro) the backup script will overwrite the tape when it's
re-inserted.

Retrospect 4.3 (Mac) Assertion Check?

2001-02-07 Thread Mark

Retrospect Experts:

I am copying Dantz on this, but a search of the Retrospect error list on
their Web site does not mention this one:

Trouble in Retrospect:

This is with version 4.3, and a relaunch of the program has begun the
scripted backup that had been aborted at Midnight due to the above issue.
Does this sound familiar to anyone here?

For me, I quit Retrospect, restarted, and tried the restore again.

Same here - but for a scripted backup.

However, my assertion check was a different "elem" number than yours.

Actually, after the initial message was dismissed, a series of maybe three

Shoeshining Tape Heads?

2001-02-06 Thread Mark

Retrospect Experts:

It was mentioned recently on this list that using a too-slow network
connection for remote client backups could cause a DAT drive to sit idle
waiting for data, thus resulting in excessive "shoeshining" of the tape
heads. In the Retrospect log entry, "Total performance: XX.X Mb/minute
with XX% compression," is there some rule-of-thumb value below which
shoeshining could be expected to occur on DDS-4 drives? Would a different
(albeit arbritrary) value perhaps apply to DDS-2 devices?

Backup OS/2 client?

2001-02-02 Thread mark . maytum

Hi happy listas,

In the next few weeks I'm going to be building up a voice processing
system (AVT) that needs to run on OS/2 Warp 4. I don't know jack about
OS/2 (yet) but I do know (or do I?) that there's no Retro client for it. I
really don't want to introduce another backup strategy into the mix.

I'm pretty sure I can script something to have this thing dump files onto
an NT server where Retrospect can get them. But I like that warm happy
feeling knowing that I can restore a box, OS and all in under an hour.

Has anybody developed a Retrospect related backup solution for OS/2? Don't
care how "out there" it is. As always I'm interested in any helpful tips
or tricks.

It's newby time! (LTO mechanisms / RAID swap modificationflaggin g)

2001-01-26 Thread Mark James

Apologies if the following questions have been covered in depth in the
recent past and everyone's bored sick of them, but...

Have 2x G4s (OS9.0.4, ASIP 6.3.1) attached to a. old Micronet DD7000 (7x
18gb at RAID5) and b. United Digital SuperStar fibrechannel host (4x 50gb at
RAID5). Total capacity across the two servers is nominally 258gb, which is
NOT ENOUGH. Have today taken receipt of another SuperStar with 8x 72gb, plus
4x additional drives for the original SuperStar. Once the messy stuff is
done I end up with a DD7000 as a doorstop, 1x 300gb Superstar + hot spare,
and 1x 432gb Superstar + hot spare. Even with our archiving 'discipline'
this should be sufficient for a couple of years.

The problems are:

BACK-UP SOLUTIONS

Backup is to a single drive Micronet DLT 20/40 on a dedicated 8600/250. I'm
happy with my rotation (three sets on the go, incremental backup, rotation
every three months) but have one reservation: the rotation itself. We
currently utilise c.200gb of space, so on the next rotation there will be
600gb of data to be written at c.35mbpm, or THREE HUNDRED HOURS of continual
backup (during which time our backup is, obviously, somewhat 'patchy'). One
improvement would be another dedicated Mac and DLT and assign one to each
server, but to my highly untrained eye the answer is the LTO/Ultrium format.

Dantz confirmed to me a couple of months ago that Retro 4.3 / ADK 1.8
supports the HP Ultrium 230 and IBM 3580 LTO Ultrium mechanisms, but neither
HP's nor IBM's websites says ANYTHING about MacOS compatibility. Dantz also
confirmed the HP SureStore Autoloader 1/9 to be supported; I didn't ask
about the IBM 3581 autoloader.

I assume that 'supported' means 'connects, is recognised, 'works', and if
applicable autochanges'. If so, that's fine: I don't want to be paged at 5am
if my cleaning tape needs changing. Does anyone have any real-life
experience of running Mac Retrospect 4.3 with an LTO/Ultrium mechanism? Any
advice gladly accepted.

MODIFICATION FLAGGING

Somewhat briefer: I want to get my new RAID in place, but don't want to
start a new backup to the DLT. Retro logs in as an admin and backs up
partitions rather than sharepoints (saves on sessions). If I give the new
RAID identical partition names and transfer all data 'to the same place',
bearing in mind the ASIP Mac will be absolutely unchanged, will I be able to
continue my incremental backup as normal or will the data be marked as
modified? Does anyone have advise on how to minimise the risk of
modification?

Many thanks in advance,

Mark

Re: How to keep Backup sets/tapes specific to a magazine?

2001-01-16 Thread mark . maytum

I believe if you have a storage set named Bob and you erase and name all your tapes in a magazine, 1-Bob...8-Bob, etc. (assuming an 8 tape mag) ANY other backup set assigned to that script will be able to use those empty named tapes. Only after they have data on them does retrospect really assign them to the Bob backup set.

Now this is under 4.2. If you name an empty tape, it really means nothing until the backup set actually writes to it. Same under 4.3? I don't know.

Is that not true?
When Retrospect is waiting for a tape, the message on the screen says waiting for a blank tape named script name or empty. (or something similar) I didn't think a script would grab it if the tape was named.

Re: How to keep Backup sets/tapes specific to a magazine?

2001-01-13 Thread mark . maytum

David,

It's not pretty, but here's what we do:

We have a whole bunch of magazines and we assign a different backup set to each magazine (obviously). But we only assign one backup set at a time to the single script. Each week on Monday morning, it is someone's task to switch the magazine and manually edit the script to use the next backup set for the new magazine - at any given moment the backup script has only one backup set assigned to it. Hope that makes sense.

I *thought* I remember someone from Dantz saying awhile ago that in a future version you'll be able to manually assign an empty tape to a storage set. If you name an empty tape now, Retrospect still sees it as blank and will use it however it sees fit. Granted, that's a feature, not a bug. But it would also be a good feature to override that feature. :-)

I think as long as the AppleShare server is running when you do your backups, permissions get backed up automatically. If you ever have to restore an entire ASIP volume, following the Retrospect instructions (you do a second restore for privs.) works just fine.

Retrospect 4.3 AppleScripts

2000-12-04 Thread Mark

Retrospect Experts:

Being a complete AppleScript novice, I ask your indulgence in answering
what *should* be a fairly simple question. The documentation for the
"FileMaker Pro Server Toggle" AppleScript that is included with Retrospect
4.3 refers specifically to to FileMaker 3.0. The AppleScript itself,
however, is structured as follows:

tell application "FileMaker Pro Server" to force quit

To distinguish a particular copy of FileMaker Pro Server 5 from other
installations that we own, the one that we desire to toggle during
Retrospect backups is named "FileMaker Server 5 Students." So finally
to the question:

Must we change the AppleScript to explicitly state "FileMaker Server 5
Students," or will the supplied default work without modification?

program trying to keep a tape at speed, that tend to fail.

Here's something to consider as a *possible* cause for 519 (and other
Ethernet) errors: We have several new G3 and G4 servers that connect
directly to high-end switches via six-foot certified Cat 5e patch cables.
When these computers boot, and the switch ports are set to auto-negotiate,
both ends *always* come up full duplex. However, if a patch cable is
briefly disconnected (or power is removed from the switch), the switch
port comes back up at *half* duplex.

A duplex mismatch can be invisible at low to moderate traffic loads on a
given connection, but at high loads the connection breaks down with
massive numbers of errors. Accordingly, on switch ports connected to
servers we force the duplex setting to full (which probably has little or
no throughput improvement over half duplex, because of limitations in the
Mac OS).

YMMV,

Correct. In any case, we run a number of Asante 10/100 PCI cards in beige

Asante switches using 100 Mbps full-duplex connections.

If you are using an Asante card, download the latest driver package, which

Retro.Startup Extension (Mac)

2000-11-07 Thread Mark

Retrospect Gurus:

In patching some Retro.Startup Extensions so that Retrospect will function
automatically behind the "BlackWatch" password-protected screen saver, I
find that although Retrospect 4.2 is in use on every target machine, the
Extension can vary anywhere from (and between) version 3.0Ai to 4.2. This
is does not seem to affect Retrospect itself, but it does cause the
patcher not to work in some instances.

Since the program's automated backup scripts are stored in the System :
Preferences : Retrospect : "Retro.Config (4.2)" file, is there any problem
in removing the out-of-date Extension, and then allowing it to be rebuilt
at the next launch of the program?

running a backup server script.
The error is:
System clock seems to have changed, expected dd/mm/2000, hh:mm:ss
dates times and statistics may be inaccurate.
  Internal consistency check failed:
  assertion check at "elem.c-811"

Backup server stops with general error. This is now happening on TWO of my
Win98 clients - I have to forget them in order to run my server.
Thanks in anticipation

after many years of using retrospect blissfully, I'm at whit's end

Re: Shuting Down NT Apps

2000-05-17 Thread mark . maytum

Most apps (but not all I've found) respond to -q. So you can use the AT
command scheduler (included in the NT Resource kit: Start MenuProgram
FilesResource Kit 4.0ConfigurationCommand Scheduler) to make a command
that specifies the path to filemaker and give it the -q command:

c:\Program Files\FileMakerPro\fmp.exe -q

I don't really know that FileMaker is called fmp.exe in Windows, but you
get the idea. And some apps have their own wierd commands that are sort
of non-standard that allow you to do all sorts of things from the command
prompt. I dunno about FileMaker but I'd try just entering this in the
command shell to see if it works. If it does, you can script it with the
command scheduler.

Another thing you could do is to set up FileMaker as a service. Use
srvany.exe to do this. Again this is included in the NT Resource kit -
there are some easy to follow instructions to do this in a read me
included with it. The cool thing about this method is that you can have
FileMaker start as a service and open up databases automatically at
startup whether anyone logs in or not.

And services can be scheduled to start and stop in the AT command
scheduler using the NETSVC command which does work with everything:

NETSVC yourservicename \\yourcomputer \stop

We have Faircom running on NT and this is exactly how we back it up with
retrospect. We stop the service, retrospect backs everything up around
2am. Then at 5am, we have an AT command run that restarts the server. And
when the server restarts, Faircom loads as a service.

Now whatever method you end up using to get fmp to stop, I can't stress
how important it is to test a restore after you do a backup. I don't know
what effect this would have on any open databases.

Re: AIT tape loaders-any real world experiences?

2000-05-12 Thread mark . maytum

AFAIK, you are correct. All these guys are OEMing Sony's mechanism into
their boxes. BTW, Seagate isn't making the Sidewinder200 anymore. The
reason we went with Seagate's box is because we've had very good
experiences with their tech support and service. And indeed they came
through in this case too - I had an advance replacement the next day, no
questions asked. I like that. :-)

Let me just ask you, we're looking into getting an AIT, isn't it Sony that
are doing all the technology stuff and other brands, like Seagate and
LaCie
put Sonys technology inside the box and their own name on the utside?

Re: Problems when asking for new tape.

2000-05-05 Thread mark . maytum

Eric,

We use MacAT ($20 shareware) to boot our ASIP servers every night after
their backups (5am). In 6.2 you can write an applescript with a
disconnect countdown and even a disconnect message (not that there's
anyone to see it at 5am, it just makes me happy) - you have MacAT run the
script and then restart (quitting all other applications) and viola! Happy
restarted server every morning.

I couldn't figure out to script this with 6.3 so I just have MacAT restart
the thing without first shutting down the ASIP process. I'm still not
sure I'm supposed to do it this way, but it seems to work...

I have Retrospect 4.2 running on a dedicated machine (Quadra 950, Mac
OS 8.1, Travan tape). It backs up my AppleShare IP 6.2 server.

When the tape fills up and Retrospect stops to ask for a new tape,
problems are created on the server. Whichever volume was being
backed up when the request is posted ends up having files that can't
be found, can't be opened, or for which the owner is said to not have
sufficient privileges. Rebooting the server corrects these problem
(files can be found and are OK, etc.)

Unfortunately, finding a convenient time to reboot my server every
week is not easy. Any thoughts?

Re: AIT tape loaders-any real world experiences?

2000-05-04 Thread mark . maytum

Funny you should mention this.

Our Seagate AIT loader that has been chugging away for about a year just
died. Found it ate a tape and I had to perform surgery to get the
magazine out - force eject didn't work.

FWIW, a guy a Seagate told me they've found that tapes wear pretty quickly
in these things and that I should probably be replacing them more often
than I am. We cycle four different magazines through this thing and I was
just about to replace them when one got eaten. A production set of DAT
tapes normally last us a year so I figured that AIT's would too. Guess I
was wrong! :-)

All in all though we've been pretty happy with it and Seagates support
too. They're advance replacing me a new unit which sould be here today -
I should note that I got the tape-eater working again but Seagate insisted
on replacing it. It certainly is pretty cool just to slam a magazine in
the thing and change it every monday morning - I can basically forget
about it.

The only thing I can think of that would be *cooler* is if Retrospect read
those little chips on the AIT tapes. It can take several minutes for
retrospect to query a new magazine because it actually has to read tape.
hint, hint.

Also, anybody have a solution for notification of failures? I've
been
toying with hacking up an applescript solution to my pager, but if
someone's
already done it... ;-)

OK, that would be cooler still!

Howdy,

I'm running a system with about 100 cpus. To this point we've been
using
a single AIT2 drive, and doing a lot of tape changing to deal with
backups.
However, we're still growing and it seems the single drive solution is
starting to show it's inadequacy for our needs. So, we're looking into
solutions.

We're currently running a Cybernetics library for our unix systems,
under Arkeia (since there was no dantz solution-hint hint) ;-). For the
most
part we've been happy with it, but it does exhibit occasional quirks. We
like the idea of a tape library, as it allows for full automation with
less
chances for user error. What I'd be very interested in hearing are any
real
world experiences with Retrospect and AIT tape libraries. Good or bad.
Before we plunk down that kind of cash we'd like to make the decision as
informed as possible. We're currently dealing with about 300+gigs total
data(full backups take 3-4 weekends, with one AIT2 per weekend, nightly
incrementals are around 6gigs), but expect that to grow rather quickly and
want to leave some headroom. Any insight is greatly appreciated.

Also, anybody have a solution for notification of failures? I've been
toying with hacking up an applescript solution to my pager, but if

Thanks in advance folks...

Re: Since the list is quiet I'll throw this out there.

2000-04-13 Thread mark . maytum

Jerry,

We back up 3 appleshare and 2 NT servers with one of our Retrospect
servers. Everything works flawlessly. Make sure you back up using the
retrospect client and not by remotely mounting Applshare volumes (you
don't backup the privileges with the latter).

I (and many others on the list) have been bitten at one time or another by
not paying close attention to proper termination, cabling of the backup
device. It's also been recommended by others to put your backup device on
its own SCSI bus.

If I may make one suggestion:

Just to give yourself peace of mind, it's a good thing to do a "test
nuke". If you can, remove your working mirror disks from the server and
them aside and grab a fresh HD and drop it in your server. Totally
restore it from a retrospect backup, carefully following the instructions
in Ch9 of the user's manual. If something goes horribly wrong, you can
always drop your working mirror back in.

Every couple of months we do "drills" on one of our test servers - we make
one of our techs see how fast they can bring a server back from just a
catalog and a tape. It really keeps the stress level to a minimum when we
*really* have to do a restore.

Hi I'm new to the list here and thought I'd ask a question that some of
you
here might have knowledge about.

Quick synopsis of what's going on and what the plan is and ask for any
advice.

Feb 2000, Purchased 3 Mac AppleShare IP 6.3 Servers (G4/400), as well as a
Micronet DataDock for each server with (2) 36Gig drives (mirrored). No
backup solution was purchased as we ran out of money for it and it was
planned as a test deployment.

Apr 2000, Just purchased a (G4/450) Desktop a HP SureStor 718
Autoloader,
and Retrospect Workgroup. What should I be aware of in the deployment of
the
Backup "server" is there any Red flags that I should avoid on the install
of
Retro Workgroup?

If these questions have already been answered by a previous post please
let
me know which number and I'll look at that.

Re: Backups via 802.11b

2000-02-02 Thread mark . maytum

Andrew,

Only issue we've had is that we don't see very good backup speeds over
802.11. Best we ever get is 30mb/min over TCP/IP. And this is under
"ideal" conditions - only 1 laptop on the wireless segment, 20ft away from
the basestation. But other than the speed issue, things work great. I've
never had a backup fail or had any other problems.

Our backup server is a 233 beige G3, AIT changer on a 100mbit switched
port. Our iBooks and WaveLan enabled PC Mac laptops all connect to
Lucent WavePoint base stations (so we're not exactly talking "apples to
apples" here since we don't use Airport bases). Each WavePoint has its
own 100mbit switched port on the same switch as the Retrospect server. I
know, I know, it seems a waste of good bandwidth to plug a WavePoint into
a 100mbit switched port but it just makes me *feel* better to have those
things on their own segments! =)
