Re: [WAMUG] Strange issue logging in to iCloud ??

2024-03-09 Thread Peter Hinchliffe via WAMUG
   My only suggestion is:

If you’re logging with Safari, go to Safari > Settings > Passwords and
find the entry for your iCloud login. You can’t edit it, so delete it
using the — symbol at the botton of the passwords list. Close the
window and try logging in again. This time Keychain will ask again if
you want to save your login and password. Say OK and move on. Hopefully
this will fix the problem. Please note this will not necessarily work
for other browsers because they won’t work the same way with Keychain.

The quickest an cheapest (i.e. free!) way is with the Terminal. Even if the

the following article makes it easy.

Re: [WAMUG] ChatGPT

2023-04-05 Thread Peter Hinchliffe via WAMUG
Not really. The discussion was more about ChatGPT generally and its emerging
implications. If we focussed on anything it was the impending release of Ask AI
for the Quicklook replacement Raycast, which showed how AI may be used
increasingly in every day productivity. For those who haven’t heard of Raycast,
it’s a highly-recommened addition to your Mac arsenal. It is truly Quicklook on
steroids, is capable of making your Mac almost anything you can think of, and
is completely free.

Find out more, as well as it’s upcoming ChatGPT extension, at

Very strange. Under normal circumstances, your photos are stored in a
specialised folder in the Pictures folder in your Home Folder, but all bets can
be off if you are storing photos outside of this location. Are you able to open
the Photos app at all? If so, the first thing to do is to check the location of
your current working library by going to Preferences > General.

Without any more information it’s very difficut to advise on a course of action
at this stage, but a starting point might be found at

Since your computers are all on your own private network, simply go to System
Preferences > Sharing and make sure File Sharing is ticked on all machines.
Does your Brother printer support AirPrint? If so, go into its network settings
and give it the details of your wireless router. If not, turn on Printer
Sharing in that same System Preferences pane on at least one of the computers.
Whichever one you choose must be running at the time of printing from any other
device, however.

I have a client running MYOB under Windows 11 on an M1 iMac - because Account
Edge is STILL just 32bit software, and therefore simply can’t run on the new
Macs.

I got her going with Parallels Desktop, but is necessary to install the
developer edition of Windows 11 in order to work on the M1 chip, so I expect it
would be the same for the M2. Been working well for over 12 months though...

I don’t think Automator is the modern answer, not having been updated for many
years. The modern equivalent is Shortcuts, but since I’ve done little more with
it than a quick tour, it’s going to take a bit of study and practice to be able

Very useful advice, even though it’s cost you a lot to discover it. I too
discovered some time ago that the only way to avoid confusion and distress with
dealing with anything Google online is to have a Google email address, even if
you never use it for any other reason than for logging into Google-based sites.

It also helps with other websites which offer OAuth access, ie, they allow you
to create an account ot login using a Google account email address. Much easier
if that address ends in .gmail.com.

Re: [WAMUG] Question about fonts

2022-06-05 Thread Peter Hinchliffe
If you haven’t done so already, activate Emoji and Symbols in your Menu Bar by
using either of the following:

Open System Preferences > Keyboard and click the “Input Sources” tab
Click “Show input menu on menu bar”

or

From Finder (or almost any software that takes text input of any sort) go to
the Menu Bar and choose Edit > “Emoji & Symbols” (Fn-E)

Either method will give you access to the Emoji & Symbols window (called
“Character Viewer” in earlier incarnations of MacOS, still reflected in its
Window Name).

The Sidebar of the window shows you a list of Character categories. Choose
Latin, then scroll down the list of characters in the middle section of the
window until you get to the section labelled “Accented Latin Characters”.
Scroll down further until you see the “Ø” character. Click on it, and in the
right side of the window you will see the character displayed in all of the
fonts on tor system. Click any particular one and you will be shown the name of
the font which contains it.

This all sounds much more complicated than it really is in practice, and I
could spend an hour talking about this incredibly useful little utility hidden
away in MacOS, which is accessible all the time, and works with all software.

Re: [WAMUG] Upgrade to Monterey

2022-05-15 Thread Peter Hinchliffe
Running Monterey on my iMac, and Catalina on my creaking 2011 MBP. All running
smoothly.

Live Text in Monterey is one of the more significant benefits, IMHO. First
impressions indicate that it will only work in Photos, greatly reducing its
usefulness, but it turns out it also works in Quicklook, which makes it truly
useful.

Do you have Calendar checked in your iCloud settings on the Mac? If you do,
you’ll see a list of calendars under the iCloud setting in the Calendar app. If
not, go to your iCloud settings and tick Calendar. The instructions in Calendar
Help can tell it better than me from then on:

Share a calendar
In the Calendar app on your Mac, place the pointer over the calendar’s name in
the calendar list, then click the Share Calendar button .

If you don’t see the calendar list on the left, choose View > Show Calendar
List.

Click Share With, then enter the names or email addresses of people you want to
invite to share your calendar.

You can also enter the name of a group in Contacts to invite all the group
members.

If you don’t see Share With, click below the last name or email address in the
Shared With list. If you see a Shared By [name] list instead of a Shared With
list, only the person named can add people.

To keep someone from making changes to your shared calendar, place the pointer
over the person’s name or email address in the Shared With list, click the down
arrow , then choose View Only.

To let anyone view your calendar — including people not listed in the Shared
With list — select Public Calendar.

To send people a link to subscribe to your public calendar, click the Share
button , then choose how you want to send the link.

People who subscribe to your public calendar can view it, but can’t change it.
Only people listed in the Share With field who have view and edit privileges
can make changes.

Click Done.

People you added to the Shared With list are sent an invitation (a notification
and an email) to join the shared calendar.

Re: [WAMUG] iphone setup

2022-03-29 Thread Peter Hinchliffe
Does Julie have an account on your Mac Mini? If not, create one, then set it up
with iCloud access for her, and make sure all the iCloud services you want to
access are turned on. You then set up iCloud access on her iPhone to match.

I’m sorry this is such a cut-down explanation, but a more detailed one would
take much more time than I have at the moment. I’m sure once you get going it
will all become self-evident.

Typing “Loop video iPad” into Google returned a list of options. One of these
is “Loopy” which seems to just the ticket, but although is it listed as free to
download, it does turn out to be subscription based. I suppose it depends on
how often you intend to use it. There seems to be plenty of other options, one
of which turns out to be Keynote, which is probably already on your iPad is is
definitely free.

Re: [WAMUG} 2012 time capsule - replacement suggestions

2021-12-28 Thread Peter Hinchliffe
The hard drive on my Time Capsule died about 18 months ago, but the TC is still
working fine as a WiFi hub. I was using the hard drive as my Time Machine disk.
I have since replaced it with a 5Gb external USB Drive, but the WiFi is working
as well as ever.

The heat over the past few days did have an effect on my iMac though -
yesterday morning iStat Menus told me the CPU was running at 95°C, which
explained why the mouse had a mind of its own and very few Safari extensions
were working properly, and I couldn’t connect to my Bluetooth headphones.
Turned it all off overnight and everything is back to a normal 50-60°C today.
Could have cooked bacon with it yesterday.

As long as you can get hold of the AE at a reasonable price it should work
well. I have a similar setup, and get pretty good coverage from one end of our
house to the other. Your main problem will be getting hold of the AE, which is

Re: [WAMUG} Kernel Panics Every 48 Hours - late 2013 iMac running MacOS 10.15.7

2021-11-16 Thread Peter Hinchliffe
The first thing I’d be doing is disabling any non-standard software for a
while. Although you quote “the usual add-ons”, the only ones you mention and
which I also have installed are CCC and Default Folder. The first suspects for
me on your list would be CleanMyMac and Intego Virusbarrier, both of which are
totally unnecessary on a Mac, as their functions are already being performed by
MacOS itself and are potentially creating conflicts. Since you apparently tend
to sleep your Mac than turn it off at night all the built-in functions will be
active.

I’’m not familiar with Fluor or Magnet, but again try running with these
disabled for a while and see if things improve. Part of your strategy could
alos include running Activity Monitor periodically to see what processes are
(a) using the most memory and (b) consuming the most processor time. I’m
running Big Sur, and am regularly afflicted by a process called “bsdtar” of
which I often have over 50 instances runnnig at a time, and bringing my Mac to
a crawl. Using AM to quit them all fixes the problem. I’ve recently read
somewhere that Parallels Toolbox is behing the bsdtar activity, so I’ve
disabled it and so far the problem as not reappeared.

The other thing is to try starting up in Safe Mode and then restart normally:

• Power on or restart your Mac, then immediately press and hold the
Shift key as your Mac starts up.
• Release the key when you see the login screen.
• Log in to macOS.
• You may be asked to log in again. On either the first or second login
window, the words Safe Boot should appear in the upper-right corner of the
window.

I’ve had this process fixes weird behaviours before as well.

I have run Parallels Desktop on a client's M1 iMac as a way of solving their
dilemma with MYOB. They’re having to run the Windows version to get around
MYOB’s incompatibility with both hardware and the OS. Parallels runs Windows 10
just fine on an M1 chip under Big Sur!

The other physical limitations have been with us for years, and can be dealt
with one way or another. No panic yet though - my old faithful is still running
fine.

She doesn’t know how it happened, but somehow the meeting ID got all munged up

As much as I hate both subscription-based software, and have an aversion to
Microsoft Office software, I decided several years ago to take out an Office
365 subscription.

It is extremely difficult to work in a professional environment with Microsoft
Office. It is simply a necessary evil. Despite my misgivings, I do recognise
that Office 365 actually represents extremely good value. At $99 p.a., and a
with a renewl coming up in April, I will be happy to pay it. I givers me the
ability to instal it on every device I own, and to able to operate trouble-free
with all Office documents people send me.

Having said all that, I rarely use any of the Office products for document
creation. I find them overblown, confusing, and laden with features that often
don’t work very well. I’m much happier working with Pages for most document
creation, and I’ll always use Numbers in preference to Excel if I need a
spreadsheet. It’s simply a more elegant product, and more than meets my needs.
If I need to collaborate with an Office user, Isimply export as Word or Excel.
The compatibility with modern versions of both platform is very good.

The truly frustrating thing about it is, even more than the terrible software
that it is, is the many things that I see people try to do with it when there
are much more appropriate, simple and cheap ways to achieve the same ends. For
example, so many people seem to like to use Excel as a database solution. It’s
a terrible idea, for so many reasons I haven’t got time to go into here. Being
a filemaker Developer I naturally go t Filemaker for a database solution, but
there are many easy, inexepensive solutions, all of which are better than
Excel. That's just one example.

I could go on, but I won’t. Suffice to say I have never regretted my decision
to take an Office 365 subscription.

Re: [WAMUG} Finally a win with Apple .... YAY !!

2021-02-01 Thread Peter Hinchliffe
I can report a very positive recent experience with Apple.

My ancient (2015 vintage) iPad Pro suddenly decided not to turn on, even when
plugged into a power source. After much experimentation I was able to get it
started only if it was connected to my iMac with iTunes running. At least this
allowed me to run a backup, but I also entered a chat session with Apple
Support.

This proved invaluable. While the iPad was running, they were able to perform
diagnostics on the device online, which confirmed that the battery needed to be
replaced. They then submitted a written report with a Case Number to my Apple
ID.

I then booked a Genius Bar session with the Apple Store in Perth. They were
able to retrieve the report and there were no further questions asked. They
immediately set about organising a replacement. Not a replacement battery - a
replacement iPad (apparently they don’t replace just batteries - it’s too
hard)! The Genius Bar appointment was on the Friday before Australia Day. The
replacement iPad came into the store the following Wednesday, and I picked it
up on Friday last week.

The new iPad is a brand new replacement 2015. I’ve now successfully restored
from my backup, and it was all done for $165, Apple's standard cost of a
replacement iPad battery. The whole operation was a smooth as silk.

My real lesson from all of this was the value Apple provides by taking
advantage of their online support.

Have you tried the good ol’ 4-finger salute (reboot the computer while holding
down the Option, Command, P and R keys all at the same time. Keep holding until
the computer restarts at least twice - I usually wait for the third restart)?

This used to be called resetting the PRAM. It’s called something else these
days but it has the same effect.

Worth a try. I’ve had it fix similar problems many times in the past.

Great news Philippe. I must say I do feel better about Big Sur overall than I
ever felt about Catalina, which I think was somewhat of a testing ground in
preparation for Big Sur, and a “proof of concept” for going all 64-bit. Even
Kinemac, an animation application I obtained back in 2013 as part of a software
bundle, and has not received an update in all the time since then, has now gone
64-bit with the release of version 2.0! I think all the software thats’s
important to me is now 64-bit, which certainly was not the case at the
beginning of the year! I’ll be moving forward with confidence I think.

Have a great Christmas and all the best for the New Year.

Don’t see much in the way of problems out there in the wild. I’ll probably
update during the Christmas break. Never did do Catalina, and the problem is
now that the latest versions of Pages, Numbers and Keynote require 10.15 or
later. This will happen with increasing frequency with other apps, especially
as they get updated to work with the M1 processor, so I guess it’s time to move
on anyway.

The hard d
rive in my TC died several months ago, but the networking hardware still works
so i’ve replaced the TM functionality with a couple of 3 & 5 Tb USB drives.
Fortunately these are now cheap enough to make this feasible. I’m looking at a
NAS eventually but managing with the current set up at the moment.

Yes, it literally crept in this year, pretty much completely unannounced
(officially) by Apple. I think the first I heard about it was on MacWorld on
Friday morning. The second time I heard anything about it was on Sunday from a
client who went ahead and installed it on his 13” Macbook Pro which is now
unresponsive, so as with all first releases of new Mac OS software, treat this
one with extreme caution, at least for the first couple of releases.

Good news Neil. The hard drive in my Time Capsule has died, and have been
pondering its replacement with a NAS for some time. Your experience is
encouraging. I’ve been using separate USB hard drives in the meantime, mainly
because of cost, but it’s probably time to have another look at Officeworks,

I presume it’s possible to set up the NAS as a TM machine for multiple
computers? I expect it’s simply a matter of simply setting up separate share

Easy question, not so easy when it comes to an answer, especially sight-unseen.
The specs seem OK. Being a 2019 computer, is it running Mojave or Catalina? Is
the HD OK? So many variables and questions. The quickest (and cheapest!)
answers might be found with a booking at the Genius Bar, seeing it’s a new

Last week, JB-HI were advertising a range of USB-C mutilport dongles, which are
pretty much essential for a computer with nothing but USB-C ports. They’re not
the cheapest thing in the world but are a worthwhile investment until the rest
of the world catches up with USB-C devices.

In the meantime, I’d say that the TM restore might be your best option. You
could also consider restoring across an Airport wireless network connection,
but you need to be able to guarantee constancy of connection, so I’d always
leave that as a last resort.

This is now a complex area. The general advice is against sharing your Apple ID
with anyone else, but you may have a need to share some features such as
contacts, etc. You can set up Family Sharing to deal with this, but I strongly
advise you to have a look at “Take Control of Your Apple ID” by Clenn
Felishman, from www.takecontrolbooks.com <http://www.takecontrolbooks.com/>.
These books are inexpensive and come in te form of eBooks and/or PDFs. This
particular title takes you deep into the intricacies of managing your Apple ID,
a topic which has now become so complex that it has an etire 100+ page book
devoted to it.

Sorry to sound like an advert, but I’ve just had a quick look in my copy and
found that the questions you area asking are pretty well covered.

Try All2MP3 (https://all2mp3.en.softonic.com/mac). Despite the user reviews
I’ve had very good results with this for many years. You could also try Music
Converter from the same site (https://music-converter-mac.en.softonic.com/mac),
which seems to have more positive comments.

I still haven’t done the deed regarding Catalina, John. Now that Filemaker 19
is here I’m thinking more about it, but it’s issues like this that keep me

I have to say Marcus that my experience with Powerline devices has not been a
happy one. I have also tried a few different range extenders, with varying
degrees of success, but I have finally settled on the Apple Time Capsule/
Airport Express combo that Peter Crisp describes, and have not had a single
problem in the several years I’ve been running them. The main problem with them
now is that Apple have discontinued them.

When my units eventually die I’ll be looking one of the new Mesh solutions,
such as the Netgear Orbi. These things have a very good reputation, and are
about a third of the price they were when they first appeared in shops.
Although I haven’t yet had personal experience with any of them, it will be
definitely something I’ll be looking very closely at when the time fro
replacement comes, certainly ahead of any Powerline solution.

I would be good to hear from anyone on the list who has had any practical
experience with a Mesh solution.

Just don’t expect to run it like Excel. It uses the concept of Tables within
Worksheets, so you can keep all your associated data nice and discreet. You can
have multiple worksheets, of course, but multiple tables within each worksheet.
You can also refrence data cells between tables as well as worksheets, just as
in Excel.

Numbers doesn’t support pivot tables, but it does have categories and summary
fields, which gives you the same effect. So many other differences.

Enjoy.

Like you, I resist subscription software as much as possible, but I did bite
the bullet with Office 365 and, like you, appreciate the benefits. The one
subscription lets me use it legally on all of my computers, and even in Windows
running under Parallels desktop.

I’d rather not use Microsoft Office at all, but I’m realistic enough to know
that it’s a necessary evil. I use it mainly to open Office documents. While
many other programs also open Office documents such as Pages, Numbers, etc,
sometimes the only way you can see the document as it was intended is to open
it in Office itself.

For document creation I pretty much always use Pages and Numbers. I find
Numbers to be an extremely capable and highly underrated spreadsheet
application. It certainly doesn’t do everything that Excel does (and the Mac
version of Excel doesn’t do everything the Windows version does!) but Numbers
does some very useful things that leave Excel in the dust when it comes to
efficiency and presentation. I do wish Apple would pay more attention to it.

The System Report in MacOS gives you a guide, but by far the best resource is
Go64 from St Clair Software

https://www.stclairsoft.com/Go64/ <https://www.stclairsoft.com/Go64/>

This program scans your computer and shows a list of all software on your
computer. You can clearly see which apps are 64 bit and which are 32 bit, but
it goes so much further than that. It also shows a list of software which is
“mostly” 64 bit, but may have problems because of some components which may be
32 bit. In other words, the programs will launch, but certain activities may
wither fail or even cause the software ot crash.

Go64 bit also has a delete function, letting you remove 32 -bit software on the
fly, rather than having to make a note of it and look for it afterwards. Handy
as a clean up tool even after installing Catalina.

These are just a few of its functions. Did I mention it’s free (donationware)?

Well worth the download.

From a Finder window, have you checked Finder > Preferences > General? Not

assuming things haven’t changed THAT much, but there should be a checkbox
allowing you to show a number of items on the desktop. You’ll see Hard disks at
the top of the list.

Things have been extremely quiet on the Catalina from ever since it was
released. I don’t know whether this is because nobody is downloading it or
everyone who has is happy with it. I do know that Adam Engst from Tidbits was
forced to move to Catalina after a recent SSD failure. Like the rest of us he

The Character Set contains characters for only ½, ¼, ¾, ⅓ and ⅔. For anything
else, you'll have find either a dedicated font or create your own fractions
using super/subscript and kerning adjustments, probably along the lines of
Peter Faulks’ suggestion.

There are a few ways to achieve this, with Word’s method probably being the
worst. In fact, on my copy, any attempt to access Word’s method causes it to
crash.

By far the easiest is simply to use you Mac’s own built-in facilities. First of
all, have a look in System Preferences > Keyboard > Test. You’ll see that
simply typing “1/2” will automatically replace it with ½. This is meant to work
anywhere (not just Word) but can be inconsistent, so
In Word, go to Edit > Emoji & Symbols. This brings up the MacOS Character
Viewer. In the Search filed at the top of the window, type “half” (without the
quotes, of course). You’ll see the ½ character on the second or third line.
Simply double click it to insert it into your document.

Method 2 always works.

A salutary lesson

2020-03-12 Thread Peter Hinchliffe
I thought the following story might offer hope to those had a s similar
experience, or are about to…

A couple of years ago I saw, in the Booragoon Apple Store, what looked a great
idea: a 64Gb SanDisk Connect USB drive. The label on the box calls it a
“Wireless Stick”, so called because it has a built-in wireless transmitter
which creates a wireless network to which other devices can connect. It’s ideal
for extending the storage space of my iPad and iPhone. I measn I can keep the
device in my pocket or bag and never have worry about dropping or forgetting
it. It’s the perfect solution for accessing portable music, for example. Great
for the gym.

Last year, shortly before Christmas, I found it in the pocket of my gym shorts
after taking it out of the washing machine. It was dead. No response of any
kind. Not even the wireless was working. I wasn’t prepared to consign it to the
bin just yet, so I kept it to one side, asnd I’ve been testing it every couple
of weeks ever since. Slowly, changes stated happening. Eventually I started
getting messages that I has ejected a drive without warning, similar signs of
activity.

A couple of days ago I gave it yet another try (it had been a couple of weeks
since the previous go) and all of a sudden everything was back! the drive
mounted happily, all the files were there, and even the wireless network was
working.

I guess the lesson from all this is that if you give your USB drive a dunking,
don’t give up. Just give it about three months to dry out.

No, don’t muck around with it. Just leave it to sort itself out. The worst that

Your Calendar data is in ~/Library/Calendars. The ~/Library folder is normally
kept hidden in modern versions of MacOS, so in case you don’t know how to find
it, go to Finder and hold down the Option key while choosing “Go” from the Menu
Bar. The Library folder will appear as a choice. Don’t try to make sense of the
contents of the Calendars folder - if you think its contents have been damaged
in someway, duplicate it (precautionary step) and replace the original folder
with a known good backup copy.

Another thing to try is to quite Safari, then re-launch it while holding down
the Shift key. This should restore your home page setting to its default.

Well, not really, because the call is coming to the account, not the device.
And sorry - I should have said Apple ID rather than iTunes or even iCloud. You
want to share the Contacts and the Calendars, but Facetime calls come in the
same bag.

I’ve never used it, but you might want to look at the options available in
Family Sharing. Others might have more useful advice in that regard.

Good advice, but Even Better Than That….

Search for “Go64” in your favourite search engine. You’ll be taken to the
(FREE!) Go64 App by St Clair Software, makers of Default Folder.

Go64 is System Report on steroids: many 64-bit apps still have some 32-bit
components which may or may not affect their performance. Go64 will help you
identify these very esaily and let you make a decision about them. Go64 also
has many other functions, such as giving you the chance to delete problematic
Apps from with its own interface - a huge time saver. It has many other
convenient functions as well.

We showed this off at the WAMUG meeting last week. Highly recommended.

I just tried it here Alan. I opened an existing .jpg image and put a white
border around it using the Markup tools, just as you have. You don’t describe
the process you used to save your file, but I exported mine back as a .jpg
file, rather than just saving it. The border was still there when I opened it

Don’t bother trying to locate it John. Launch it with Spotlight as recommended,
then once it has launched, right- (control-) click its icon in the dock. Choose

1. Always, always, ALWAYS make it your first order of business to check the
sending address of the email. If it has genuinely come from Apple, the sending
address will end in .apple.com. If its some variant of .apple.xxx.com, or
something else that doesn’t evem contain the word “apple”, you can be sure it
didn’t come from anyone at Apple. Likewise, a genuine email from Netflix will
end in .netflix.com, not some variant of .netflix.xxx.com. You can check the
sending address byt rolling over the address at the very top of the email and
clicking on the little disclosure trinagle that appears (assuming you’re using
Mail).

2. Never, never, NEVER reply to suspicious emails. It’s just inviting a ton of
trouble. It confirms that your email address is real, inviting a potential
flood of spam from the same source or others.

Logic tells me that all the files archived by Time Machine end up in the same
Time Machine folder on the TM drive, regardless of origin, but I agree the
restoration process through Migration assistant could well be unpredictable.

My first insticnt would be just to try it. The worst that could happen is that
the files base on the MBA’s internal drive will be restored to their correct
locations, but those originating from the external drive might be ignored
(worst case scenario). It’s also possible that MA, not finding a matching
location on the new 2018 Mac, might just create one and proceed regardless
(best case scnario).

I think that if you wind up with the worst case scenario, you’d just have to
spend some time manually dragging over the folders and/or files which were
ignored. In the best case scenario, there’d be nothing else to do.

Dunno. I haven’t been faced with this situation before so I can’t report from
experience unfortunately. Hopefully, there might be others on the list who are
more enlightened.

I can’t think of anything that causes more confusion for users than passwords.
Most people I know are terrified of them, and the idea of introducing something
extra to learn simply adds to the terror. Even those who I have been able to
convince of the value of 1Password don’t take the time to learn how to use it
properly, so their confusion worsens.

At least turn on Keychain for iCloud for her. It will keep track of all her
passwords and she won’t even have to think about it. And it’s free.

I have been a keen user of Duet Display, which does essentially the same thing:
allows an iPad to act as a second display for a Mac. Very useful to have when
out and about with a laptop, but perhaps not quite so useful if your main
computer is an iMac.

I have no experience with Luna, but where Duet requires a wired connection
between the iPad and the Mac, Luna can work wirelessly through a dedicated
dongle. This probably makes Luna a little more expensive than Duet, but
potentially more useful under certain circumstances, especially when running a
cable might be problematic.

Either way, having such an easily-transportable way of giving you a second
display for your Laptop can come in very handy. Just to be clear though -
neither solution provides for the integration of MacOS and iOS. That is to say,
the iPad can extend your Mac’s display, but not the other way around.

It should only be there if you’ve ever used Microsoft Sharepoint. If you don’t
use this software, and even if you do, it;s certainly safe to remove it.

Assuming you’re using Safari (and this varies from version to version), go to
Safari > Preferences and click “Extensions”. Here you will see a list of all
the Extensions or “Plugins” you have installed on your system. You cna enable,
disable or even delete them as desired from this screen.

Have a look at

https://www.lifewire.com/how-to-view-and-remove-safari-plug-ins-2260895

Other Browsers have different mechanisms for handling plugins, but they also
have basically the same functionality when it comes to removing or disabling
them.

The quick answer is No, because the USB hub is simply distributing multiple USB
connections from a single USB port in your computer. Consequently the hub has
only a single input cable or port, and all the rest are output ports.

The correct way to access a single printer from multiple computers is first of
all to have them on the same network (Airport or Ethernet) and then turn on
Printer Sharing (System Preferences > Sharing then check the Printer Sharing
Checkbox). The printer must be attached to only one of the computers, which
will be the one with Printer Sharing activated, and of course that computer
must be running if the other computer needs to print.

True enough, but Tony’s wife's notes were duplicated on her iPad, indicating
that iCloud must have been involved, unless the notes were duplicated manually,
which I think is unlikely. Altogether a difficult scenario to understand from a
remote standpoint.

OK, I think that clears up the point of confusion. The Bin icon in Notes does
not open a deleted files repository as it does in the Finder on the Mac. It
simply deleted WHATEVER IS CURRENTLY SELECTED. In your wife’s case that would
have been the latest note she had just created/edited. It’s the legacy of not
having a “Desktop” in iOS. Anyway, your experience does point out the benefit
of having iCloud configured across your devices.

Not sure what’s happened here. There is no “bin” on an iPhone, akin to the
Trash can on Mac or the “Recycle Bin” on Windows, so I’m not sure what Bin it
was that she hit. When you delete files on an iPhone they get deleted, but
that’s usually by tapping a specific “Delete” button within an App, so I’m not
at all sure how your wife manage to put her Notes “into the Bin”. There are 3rd
party apps which can deal with deleted files recovery, but from your
description I can really offer any constructive advice because I can’t
visualise what might have happened.

Your first and best resource is your most recent iPhone backup, but if that
hasn’t been done in a while then you’ll lose any recent data when you try to
restore from the backup. Sorry I can’t be of more help here.

It looks as though Apple do not yet offer a standalone installer for iTunes in
Mojave. The only way seems to be to reinstall the OS.

If you visit https://www.apple.com/itunes/download/ you can download the
earlier version 12.8. It might be worth installing this, then wait for iTunes
to recommend the update.

I don’t know if this will help or not, but I do actually have two Apple IDs,
the result of a similar experience to yours many years ago. I actually find it
quite useful to have tow different Apple IDs - I use one for my App and Music
purchases, and the other for iCloud and all things related to that. I don’t
find this too onerous to keep track of, and it helps to keep my Apple-related
activities in neat compartments, but it’s important to note that I use only one
of the IDs for purchases, and nothing else. Having multiple IDs for either
compartment would lead to a nightmare situation, similar to where you are, from
the sound of it.

See if you can get Apple to help you to consolidate your Apple IDs into a
single account. the other thing that can lead to disaster is to have multiple
people using the same Apple ID, unless it’s specifically a shared account,
something I try to discourage anyway unless it’s absolutely necessary because
it’s a real challenge to manage properly.

Just remember that any one Apple ID can have only one password - you can’t have
more than one password for an account.

Hope this helps to shed a little light, but in the long run a chat with someone
at the Genius Bar will be your best way out of this.

I have used 1Password almost since it’s inception many years ago, but back it
up with Apple’s own Keychain, os that if one goes wrong I have reference to the
other. Keychain’s pubic interface, Keychain Access, can be found in the
/Applications/Utilities folder, but it can be a bit intimidating to many people
because it’s not all that clear what to do with it. A much more straightforward
interface can be found in Safari Preferences (but of course if you decry Safari
in favour of Google Chrome, Firefox or something else then the following can be
ignored). When using Safari, choose Safari > Preferences… from the Menu Bar,
then click the Passwords icon. You will be asked for your system password (the
one you log into your computer with) and you will see a list of all the sites
you have visited which require authentication. You might be surprised at the
number of them!

If you select any item on the list, it will show you the password for that
site. You might also see a little yellow triangle on the ame line. This
indicates sites which share the same password. This cna be a security risk, so
it’s a good guide to help you go through the problem sites and update all your
risky passwords. If you can’t think of new ones, Safari will provide helpful,
strong suggestions for you, and keep track of them into the bargain.

Of course, this is only tracking passwords you use on the Web, but 1Password
will take care of the others. With both 1Passsword and Keychain on your side,
you shouldn’t need that old notebook anymore.

And one more thing: turn on iCloud Keychain, so that your passwords work across
all your devices. Record once, use everywhere.

I’m happily using "AdBlock for Safari" from the App Store, on the advice from
Daniel Kerr. Apple have changed the security settings in Safari which make the
use of third party ad blockers a difficult experience, so the safest place to
get them from is now the App Store because they are guaranteed to work. AdBlock

As frustrating as all this is, it’s an unfortunate reality in today’s computing
world that you must keep track of your accounts and passwords. The only way to
avoid this is to turn off all access to the internet, which has now become
almost impossible.

Whether or not you are using iCloud (and if you use a Mac you probably are
whether you think so or not) you are actually being asked for the password for
your Apple ID. Your Apple ID is generally just your regular email address. Many
people go through the motions of creating an Apple ID when they first set up a
new Mac or upgrade their OS, then either forget about it or don’t realise the
significance of what they’ve been asked to do.

In any event, if you don’t know what your Apple ID password is, you’ll have to
reset it. The most direct way to do this is simply to go to System Preferences
on your Mac and choose iCloud. You will be asked to type a password. If you
type something and it’s not recognised after 3 attempts you will see a link
appear which you can click if you “can’t remember your password”. If you click
that a message will be sent to your email address showing you the steps to
follow to create a new password.

Assuming that your Time Machine is up-to-date, and that it is still in good
nick, ie, not corrupted by the damaged Mojave installation, you should be able
to re-start your Mac using Shift-Option-⌘-R. This will install the MacOS that
originally came with your Mac, or the closest version still available. You
should then be able to use Migration Assistant to restore your Mac by
recovering from your Time Machine.

This could well be a lengthy process, and your OS may be updated several times
before it gets underway, so you have to be sure that you can be around to
answer the various prompts that appear while this happens, but eventually
you’ll be able to walk away and leave it to its own devices until it finishes
the restoration.

For anyone who runs or relies on using Filemaker Pro 17, please be aware that
there are many significant problems with this software in Mojave. Filemaker

The “Purchased” history is there - it’s just in an unexpected place. You have
to tap on your Account icon (top of the screen at the right). This is where you
can access all your account details, redeem gift cards, etc. There is also an
item labelled “Purchased” which takes you your entire purchased list. The list
also gives you the option of seeing things you have purchased, but are not on
the device you’re currently using, and there’s also search field allowing you

Thanks Daniel. I will certainly follow that up. It’s a slightly different
product (your is AdBlock, mine is Ad-Block - the hyphen does make a difference
:-)). The other difference is that AdBlock is an App by BETAFISH, whereas
Ad-Block is purely an extension and comes from pcvark.og (a site, ironically,
which is blocked by Ad-Blocker itself!!) Many of the other ad and content model
seem to be following the model of Betafish, where you run an App which then
installs an extension.

My main point was that when you go to Safari > Safari Extensions… in the menu,
you now go to the App Store rather than the old extensions library web page.
The Betafish product is not listed on the App Store after you choose that menu
option, so it seems that it’s now a far less reliable guide.

Anyway. thanks for the link. I’ll download it and see how I fare.

been replaced by a specific location within the Mac App Store. The old web page
still exists for the benefit of users of older versions of Safari. One
consequence of this is that many of the older extensions are either deleted or
at least compromised when you launch Safari 12.

One of these is Ad-Blocker , which while still operative, comes with a warning
that it will significantly affect the speed of loading of some websites. See
the writing on the wall, I bagan to cast around for a suitable replacement on
the App Store and chose a freebie one called “Magic Lasso”. It is extremely
effective, to the point that it works entirely too well, and blocks access to
perfectly legitimate sites, especially if you’re trying to come in from a link
in an email, for example. The big problem here is that it provides no way to
whitelist such sites. On these occasions I’ve had to go back and re-activate
Ad-Blocker. But I want to move on. Ad-Block say they are coming up with a
working solution, but it’s not quite here yet.

Many of the others do support whitelisting, but the prices are from anywhere
between free and about $15, and I’m not really prepared to go through them one
by one. There no try-before-you-buy on the App Store. Has anyone else on the
list had experienced the same problems, or come up with a solution they’re
happy with?

They're baaack!

2018-09-18 Thread Peter Hinchliffe
It’s finally happened! I’d almost given up hope of ever seeing the return of
Categories to Numbers (they’re now called Smart Categories), but they have made
a triumphant return in the latest versions of Numbers, for both the MacOS and
iOS versions.

One of the greatest complaints against Numbers as a spreadsheet program to be
taken seriously is the lack of Pivot Tables. The Categories feature in Numbers
’09 was not exactly the same as Pivot Tables, but it was close enough, and now
it’s back in the latest version, making the transition from iWork 09 much
closer to completion.

If you’re not familiar with this feature, in a nutshell it provides a similar
functionality to sorting, but is much more powerful. You turn Categories on or
off with a sinmple toggle, and you can then choose one or more columns as your
categories. The data is then instantly sorted based on your choice(s), and you
also have the ability to include basic statistics with your categories, such as
sum, average, count, etc. You can also hide the data rows from view so all you
see are the category headings with their summary data. Very quick, very easy to
do, and even fun. You can change your categories on the fly with a single mouse
click or finger tap, to produce a completely different story. You can even
create a graph of the result.

There doesn’t seem to much more to do to bring back all of the great features
of the earlier version, and of course, all the brand new features of the modern
iWork are there as well, such as editable shapes, collaborative editing, etc.

The Numbers update is available for free from the App Store on both MacOS and
iOS.

Re: Recovering dates

2018-06-03 Thread Peter Hinchliffe
Despite what you might think, MS Word still, after all these years, does not
play properly with MacOS X, so it does not work as expected with the autosave
feature of OS X, but rather uses its own internal autosave feature.
Consequently, there is no access to or respect for the associated command of
Revert To… or Browse All Versions. MS Word is still very much mired in the
horrible 1996 release and, despite many improvements and enhancements since
those dark days, still remains a pale shadow of the Windows version in too many
ways. 1996: the other hallmark date is 2001, when the first official version of
MacOS X was released, which means that Microsoft have had almost twenty years
to get this sorted out, but they haven’t. I’d better get off that soapbox now
while I still can or it’ll take up the rest of the day.

The point is that the original Creation Date of the file should still be
available, if you select the file in Finder and Get Info (cmd-I) on it. You’ll
find the Creation Date on the fourth line under the General category.

The one problem with this is that, depending on how it was done, if you have
copied the file from another drive at some point, the Creation Date might show
the date of that copy, rather than the Original Creation Date. Nevertheless, it
will still be more informative than the Modified Date.

The other thing you could do is navigate to your file’s folder in Finder, and
View As List. Choose View > Show View Options from the Menu Bar and you will a
list of items to be shown in List View. Set the “Date Created” checkbox, and
that column will now appear in the Finder Window. You are free to position the
column wherever you like simply by dragging its header around. With any luck
your original creation dates will have been preserved. You can do exactly the
same thing with any of the other columns shown in that Show View Options window.

Unfortunately, I can’t help you with how how Word handles any of this. I might
also recommend opening your Word files in Apple’s Pages. The latest versions do
a very good job of retaining the format and integrity of the originals. You can
then make all your changes in Pages, and when you save they will be saved as
Pages files, leaving the original Works files unmodified in any way, including
all date information.

Re: Software to edit PDF files

2018-05-07 Thread Peter Hinchliffe
Hi Philippe,

You mention in your message on May 6 that you have hear that MS Word will pen
PDF files. Unfortunately, this is true only of the Windows version, and the
results are acceptable but not excellent. Word on the Mac will also “open”
PDFs, but the results are displayed in native PDF code (a form of Postscript)
and therefore not useful at all to any but the most knowledgeable PS jockeys.

Of course, I heartily endorse PDFPen, along with many other products from its
publisher Smile. Bear in mind that not only does it allow you to edit the PDF
directly, but it will also convert the file to a Word document, as well as
other formats. Earlier versions required a decent Internet connection to
achieve this, but recent versions come with the conversion routines built in.

You can also convert the PDF to a Word format using current versions of PDF
Reader, and this DOES require the Internet; btu it’s free, so it might be the
best option for a one-off job.

A word of clarification might be needed here to prevent disappointment, just in
case you are able to get along to a meeting, only to arrive at the wrong place…
The committee meetings are held in South Perth, but the monthly General
Meetings are held in the premises of ProWest Real Estate at 175 High Road,
Willetton, on the first Tuesday of every month (except January).

“Safari Extensions” takes you to a website which lists a large range of
extensions which are available to download for use with Safari.

Safari > Preferences > Extensions shows you the extensions you actually have
installed in Safari at the moment, and also allows you to activate, deactivate
or update them as required.

Learn to use Filemaker Pro

2018-03-04 Thread Peter Hinchliffe
Tired of mucking around with spreadsheets and word processors just to keep
track of all your important data. Got an idea for an iPhone app but don’t know
how to get started? Heard of Filemaker Pro but don’t know much about it?

Filemaker has been around almost as long as the Mac and is powering the
database systems of some of the biggest companies in the world, yet it is so
easy to use even a raw beginner can create a useful solution with it. Because
of this, Filemaker has gathered a reputation of being something of a toy, but
those who use it know this is far from the truth. Modern versions are using a
wide range of technologies to produce some amazing solutions.

The current version is Filemaker Pro 16, and version 17 will be released
sometime in the next few months. If you want to find out more, Filemaker will
be running introductory sessions around the country, including Perth, in the
coming months. For more information, go to

At last! A kindred voice from the wilderness!

I can see some small point in a wireless mouse, mainly from the point of view
of being useful for Presentations when you might be some distance from your
computer, but a keyboard? How far away from your screen do you want to get??

At least with an Apple wireless keyboard or mouse you’re using Bluetooth, but
most other wireless keyboards and mice on the market rely on a small
transmitter which has to plug in to a USB port, so you might as well use a
cable anyway!

The other point is that Apple wired keyboards have a couple of handy USB ports
built into them, while their wireless counterparts don’t, reducing their
utility even further.

I’ve just taken deliver of a nice new iMac, and of course it comes standard
with a wireless keyboard. I did insist on the extended keyboard, though. I just
can’t bring myself to use the short one.

I could go on but I’ll stop here...
