RE: FrameMaker Bug: inability to add a table after a table footnote.
I understood Anna's suggestion to be that one should add a /temporarily/ empty paragraph and then move up one line before inserting a table, so that when you need to add text after the table, you already have a visible text symbol to place your cursor ahead of. If the table is not the last thing in the file, then that step could be skipped or the temporary empty pgf deleted. Meaning that I am not sure if paragraph format “XYZ” in one of the files is necessarily identical to the same format “XYZ” in another one of the files. Probably close, but not sure if they are identical. It is also possible that some file may have had a format added/removed/edited because it is only used within that file only (like a content list format or something). Is there a way to compare/list/report (whatever) all the formats in the files to see where the inconsistencies are? At least, so that I can take one of the file and apply its formats to all the other files and not break things too much? extremely slow PNG loading
Hi Framers, FM 10 (TCS 3.5), Win 7 64-bit, 16 GB RAM, i7 CPU I have a two-page file that imports by reference 24 different small PNG files, many of them repeated several times, for a total of 75 images. The PNG files are each about 900 bytes in size, all located in a subfolder of the folder containing the file. When I open this document, FM takes about 5 seconds to display each graphic (5-6 minutes to open the entire file). All files are on a local 180 GB SSD. I have converted all the PNG files to TIF and reimported into a copy of the file. The entire document opens in about 3 seconds. Has anyone else noticed this problem with PNG? That format has become my standard output for most purposes, but I'll have to change that if there isn't a fix in FM. Most people remember that adjectives modify nouns, but forget that they are not the *only* things that modify nouns. In some cases verbs modify nouns (e.g., the sitting president), and in many cases -- particularly in technical writing -- nouns modify nouns. Nouns that modify nouns are referred to as "attributive nouns" or "noun adjuncts". They almost always appear before the noun they modify (an attributive or prepositive position) and they typically identify a property or attribute of the noun that follows rather than directly modifying the noun itself. The classical example of an attributive noun phrase in English is "chicken soup". Both words are nouns, but it is undeniable that the first noun modifies our understanding of what the second noun represents. Exactly what the relationship is varies widely; the second noun could be made from the first (e.g., chicken soup), intended for the first (e.g., user manual), composed of the first (e.g., butterfly migration), dependent on the first (e.g., church wedding) -- basically any semantic relationship other than simple possession by. And you can string a bunch of them together without any of the usual concerns about commas in adjective series. (E.g., The chicken soup tureen ladle handle was covered with schmaltz.) Both "user manual" and "butterfly migration" fit this pattern. Both "user" and "butterfly" are nouns that modify the sense of the nouns that follow them. And they are unlike adjectives because they cannot be used predicatively. -FR -------- Fred wins the Internet again! -- Stuart Rogers Technical Communicator Phoenix Geophysics Limited 3781 Victoria Park Avenue, Unit 3 Toronto, ON, Canada M1W 3K5 +1 (416) 491-7340 x 325 http://www.phoenix-geophysics.com ___ You are currently subscribed to framers as arch...@mail-archive.com. Insets and Tables: container paragraphs with no additional spacing
Offline exchanges with other subscribers to this list prompted me to do an experiment, and it was a success, so I'll share it. If you prefer to have your tables in dedicated paragraphs, you run into the problem of unwanted space above the table caused by the otherwise empty paragraph. Some people minimize the extra space by creating a tag with 2-pt font and no space above or below, but that makes the paragraph hard to see, and does still add the extra 2 points. With text insets, you end up with a similar problem of unwanted space below the inset, due to the tag of the containing paragraph. I have long used a trick to place a table in its own paragraph so that the top of the table aligns with the top of the container paragraph – zero extra space above the table, in other words. I've learned that the same trick can be applied to text insets. For tables, create a pgf tag, e.g., TableAnchor: Font Size: 12 pt Color: (something other than black, so it stands out) Spacing Below Pgf: –12.0 pt (negative 12 points) and change all yourTable tags to have Spacing Above: –12.0 pt Insert a blank paragraph where you want the table to start and tag it TableAnchor. Insert a table in that paragraph. The top of the table will be even with the top of the TableAnchor paragraph. For insets (harder to maintain, depending on inset content), create a pgf tag in the container document, e.g., InsetAnchor: Font Size: 12 pt Color: (something other than black) Spacing Above Pgf: –12.0 pt In the inset source document, create a variant tag based on the last paragraph of the inset (e.g., BodyInsetLast as a variant of Body): Spacing Below Pgf: –12.0 pt (negative 12 points) Apply that tag to the last paragraph of the inset. In the container document, create a new empty paragraph where you want the inset to go. Tag the paragraph InsetAnchor. In that paragraph, type a non-breaking space (to overcome the bug that reformats the paragraph on updating the inset). Place your cursor just before the non-breaking space and import the inset. For both these methods, if you want to move your cursor into the containing paragraph after the table or inset is in place, use the arrow keys -- the mouse pointer will only select the table or inset, because that's the uppermost "layer." -- Stuart Rogers Technical Communicator Phoenix Geophysics Limited 3781 Victoria Park Avenue, Unit 3 Toronto, ON, Canada M1W 3K5 +1 (416) 491-7340 x 325 http://www.phoenix-geophysics.com ___ You are currently subscribed to framers as arch...@mail-archive.com. You don't need a specific tag for an inset, but it is a good idea to have a space or non-breaking space immediately before the pilcrow of the paragraph that will hold the inset. Make a copy of the file. 2. Rename the copy, changing the extension from .docx to .zip. 3. Unzip the file. 4. Locate the Media folder within the unzipped content; it contains all the graphics. Re: top-bound book
On 2014-Jun-04 4:54 PM, Carol J. Elkins wrote: Framers, I'm ready to print a wire-bound pocket-sized booklet that will be top-bound (coil binding along the top of the book) so as to fit nicely in one's pocket. In all my 18 years of doing this, this is the first time I've run across having to publish a top-bound book, so I have no experience to guide me. Thus I'm emailing you. I've printed the Framemaker file to PDF and had the printer make a demo copy for me. When the booklet is held open to a two-page spread, the top page is upside down. In order to view it, one has to turn the booklet over or upside-down. I have some questions: 1. Is this the customary way to print a top-bound book? Or should both pages be visibly oriented the same direction? (That would put the page number of the top (even-numbered) pages on the bound edge.) 2. If not, what is the easiest way to get the even-numbered pages turned upside down? 1) By changing the Framemaker template; 2) By doing something in Acrobat; or 3) by telling the printer to do something on his end. 3. Is there a word that describes this kind of layout? I work with imposition in booklet printing a lot but it doesn't seem to apply to top-bound books. I've asked my client to do a bit of usability testing to determine if it will make a difference to his users. Will they want to view two pages at once? Will they be inconvenienced by having to flip the book over every time they advance to the next page? This is a field test manual and they will definitely progress through the book one page at a time. While he's checking that out, I thought I'd check with you for input. Carol ___ I think the word "imposition" still applies, and if a change is required, I would definitely expect the commercial printer to be able to handle it. I print my books in-house and bind them with top-binding. My readers need to see more than one page at a time, so both pages are oriented to be readable simultaneously. It sounds like that's not the case with your readers. On the other hand, if they would be flipping through the book to find a specific task in a series (not necessarily in sequence), they'd probably find it annoying to have to turn & flip, turn & flip, over and over. Being able to turn pages and quickly see the content, and only having to fold the binder once (binding at top or bottom) when the required page is located, would seem to be more efficient. But I would definitely rely on your usability testing results to decide what's best. But sometimes when I open a new dialog or pod, Frame insists on snapping it to the book file or another dialog. I like to arrange things in a particular order, with the most accessed dialogs on the left side of the monitor. The problem is that if the dialogs or pods are snapped together, when I close one, the other closes too. Is there any way of preventing this? Keith, When you've got everything set up the way you want it, click Save Workspace in the drop-down menu to the left of the Minimize button on the title bar. Name it as you like (mine is !Stuart so it sorts alphabetically to the top of the list). When FM misbehaves or things get moved around inconveniently, click Reset Workspace in the same menu and press Enter (because Adobe can never be sure that you /really/ want your workspace back), and you should be good to go. Re: TOC entry out of sequence

That was a good thing to check because perhaps it applies to my some-time-ago similar issue, yet to be solved: In another book, an unconnected frame's level 1 head appears in the TOC *above* the entry for its chapter. There is no end-of-flow tag issue. This frame could only be connected to the end of the chapter, if at all, because it must appear on the chapter's first page and has a different format than the main flow, which must continue to flow around it regardless of any text changes in either (think of it as a diagram that is the full width of a page whose main flow is a two-column format). But with or without connecting this frame, I might have expected this level 1 head to appear at the end of this chapter's other TOC entries, not as the last entry of the previous chapter. The rightful location of this head in the TOC is the second item below its chapter head. Perhaps Wim's comment applies... this unconnected frame originally came from another chapter and may have been the last frame added to this chapter. Don't know how to alter time to change that ;-). Thanks very much, Karen Don't get confused about the position of the head1 entry in the TOC -- just because it appears /before/ its Chapter title does not mean that FM is associating it with the previous chapter. A TOC is just a file consisting of a long list of x-refs, formatted according to their pgf tags. When they appear out of the expected order in the TOC, it means that FM is encountering them in that order because of the way it parses frames and flows. Try resetting your workspace so none are open and see if that helps. I've found FM to be sluggish when the pgf and char tag pods are open; it seems to be trying to update every field in the open pod after each key stroke. s. -- Stuart Rogers Technical Communicator Phoenix Geophysics Limited 3781 Victoria Park Avenue, Unit 3 Toronto, ON, Canada M1W 3K5 +1 (416) 491-7340 x 325 http://www.phoenix-geophysics.com -- next part -- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... On 2013-Jul-09 2:40 PM, Melissa Clark wrote: Hi, I’m writing today to query others about the Standard versus High Quality Print options under the PDF Setup in Adobe FrameMaker and Distiller. The various PDF job options are being evaluated internally. In particular (and what I’m asking about now), in PDF Setup –> Settings –> PDF Job Options, some use “Standard,” while others use “High Quality Print” (same setting in Distiller). Based on what I have been told, there is no reason (benefit) to using High Quality Print (versus Standard) even in docs that use more screenshots and/or pictures, and my understanding is that High Quality Print results in a larger file size. (I have been using High Quality Print for years.) My question is whether using Standard (instead of High Quality Print) results in any detrimental effect. For reference, here is some information from Adobe: Standard • For desktop printers or digital copiers, published on CD or sent to client as publishing proof • Uses compression/downsampling to reduce file size • Embeds subsets of fonts, converts colors to sRGB, prints medium resolution, windows font subsets not embedded by default • Opened in Acrobat and Reader 6.0 and later High Quality Print • Quality printing on desktop printers and proofing devices • Downsamples color and grayscale images to 300ppi and monochrome to 1200ppi • Embeds subsets of fonts, leaves colors unchanged, does not flatted transparency • Opened in Acrobat and Reader 5.0 and later For what it’s worth, I am using Adobe FrameMaker 9 and 10 and Distiller 8. Any feedback on what others have found while using High Quality Print versus Standard would be greatly appreciated. This is a very old presentation by the most informed PDF guru I've ever encountered; I think the tables that begin on page 68 are still valid, though: http://www.planetpdf.com/planetpdf/pdfs/pdf2k/01W/isaacs_reliablepdfcreation.pdf -- Stuart Rogers Technical Communicator Phoenix Geophysics Limited 3781 Victoria Park Avenue, Unit 3 Toronto, ON, Canada M1W 3K5 +1 (416) 491-7340 x 325 http://www.phoenix-geophysics.com ___ You are currently subscribed to framers as arch...@mail-archive.com.
