Hi Folks,
I found my copy of
DESTINATION MARS
Version 2.1

Phone: 201-379-7471
Copying of this program is prohibited except

   * INSTRUCTIONS FOR DESTINATION MARS *
by Richard L. De Steno
Destination Mars is a game that presents you with the challenge
of
successfully travelling from Earth to Mars. You must avoid such
dangers as
excessive damage to your ship, running out of fuel, being vaporized
by space
aliens, crashing your ship, and others.
You begin the game by placing the game diskette in your default
drive and
entering the word MARS. After the opening announcement, you will be
asked if
you want sound effects. Simply press the letter Y if you do want
sound effects
or the letter N if you would rather play the game without sound
effects. Do
not press the ENTER key at any time in the game after making a
choice that asks
for a letter. However, number entries do require a press of the
ENTER key.
Next, you are instructed to press the letter B to blast off. If you
blast off
successfully, you will begin the thirty five million mile trip to
Mars.
You travel by spinning the cosmic wheel, which is done by pressing
the
ENTER key. This produces a number from 1 to 10. Your ship then
travels two
hundred thousand miles times this number. For example, if you spin
a 6,
you
travel one million, two hundred thousand miles toward Mars on that
spin of the
wheel. Press S at the cosmic wheel prompt to toggle sound on and off.
Each spin of the cosmic wheel presents you with a situation.
Most of the
situations require you to make a choice. You will be prompted in
such cases
to press A - B - E - F - R - N or H. These options mean the
following:
 A is for accelerating -
B is to use your force field barrier -
E is for taking evasive action -
F is for firing your phasers -
R is for making repairs -
N is for taking no action.
H is to get help if you forget these definitions.
You may exit the game whenever you are directed to spin the
cosmic wheel,
simply press the ESCAPE key or CTRL-C. You may also exit at any of
the
preliminary prompts at the beginning of the program.
Most of the prompts in the game are self-explanatory and need no
elaboration. There are numerous ways that you may be prevented from
reaching Mars. You undoubtedly will experience them as you attempt
to reach
your destination. There are some surprises in store for you in this
regard.
Note that you use ten units of fuel with each spin of the cosmic
wheel.
Also, keep in mind that each instance of damage to your ship must be
repaired.
If you go too fast, you may enter a time warp. Here is a hint:
the
astute player will escape the time warp on the first attempt.
You may freeze the game at the prompt to spin the cosmic wheel by
pressing F and entering a file name. To resume the frozen game, enter
the file name with MARS, like this: MARS FILENAME.

There are other programs available from Richard De Steno. Check the
README.DOC file provided with this program, or contact him for info

[Audyssey] Luminal, the latest version impressions.

2011-05-13 Thread Christopher Bartlett
Ok, I beat the second quest. (Hint, there is a nicety of timing when to
introduce your turtles) Now I'm on to the third, which is proving equally
provoking and addictive, but there are still some niggles.

Why can't I destroy rocks? Rocks do not have a destroy option.

Why can't I destroy piranha? Yes, I tried out the piranha and at one point
was low on power but wanted to rid myself of a few of the pesky things, but,
while destroy is presented as an option for the p command, hitting
shift-delete doesn't destroy one.

On the subject of piranha, I think these boys may be a little unbalanced.
In my current game, I have 1,295 of the bloody things. Their die-off rate
seems a bit low and they're not reacting to available food supply (or lack
thereof) as expected. I have no fish and no aquatic bugs left, only a
couple of turtles and some assorted land critters. They aren't killing off
the land critters, so I don't know how they're surviving the sterilized
waters they currently inhabit. Neat idea, but you may want to rebalance
them. With both kaymans and turtles in the water, I'd have expected the
population to stay a bit more in control.

And sadly, Jaws 12 doesn't work with the game, or at least it doesn't on my
machine.

By the way, when you have 1300 piranha, the game slows down to a crawl, then
freezes completely. I had to exit via the task manager. As I've saved
along the way, I may now be screwed. I don't know if this is a speech delay
thing, or I've just managed to choke my machine. If it's the latter, then
about three more ticks would have killed anybody, as I'd have 3,000 or more
piranha.

Ok, the amount of feedback I'm giving you now rivals David Greenwood. Be
honored sir.

Chris

Re: [Audyssey] Destenation mars

2011-05-13 Thread dark
Indeed tom, that was rather ridiculous, especially considdering neither the
original game nor the remake were accessible (in fact the old retroremake I
found of it a couple of years ago appeared to go missing too, I wonder if
the same thing happened).

While their are a few cases of companies and people who want their work out
there and played, eg, the creator of turrican who actually not only gave
permission for the games' name, graphics, music and other aspects to be used
in remakes, but also allowed the originals to be redistributed, and the
author of fallthru, these are rare cases and usually as you said the company
will scream and shout while doing nothing to get the game out to people who
may stil want to play it.

What is almost worse though, is often the company simply want the name, so
that they can produce a game later on with the old game name as a draw.

Take golden axe. The original is a classic and no mistake, however there
have been several really quite awful games bought out under the golden axe
name supposedly as part of the series.

For instance Golden axe the duel, a very bad quality one on one beat em up
on the Sega Saturn console, and more recently, a game on the xbox which is
of all things a 3D beast riding affair that plays almost like a racing or
vehicle game and is by report really not good either.
Though this really doesn't happen in terms of accessible games sinse there
are so few around, and maybe it'd be worth trying to contact this chap to
ask about the games' status.

Beware the grue!

Re: [Audyssey] Luminal, the latest version impressions.

2011-05-13 Thread Jeremy Kaldobsky
Chris, I was quite suprised when you started talking about the piranha!
Apparently you found a bug, because piranha aren't supposed to be available for
purchase until the next update that I haven't released yet. They are supposed
to first show up in mission 7. I've checked the code and I believe I've fixed
the bug, but there really isn't much of a reason for me to post the patch yet,
because I'm close to releasing mission 7 anyways.

The reason you're having all of those problems with the piranha, is because
they weren't done being coded yet, in the version you're using. Since I
believed they couldn't be purchased, that wouldn't normally have been a
problem. On the next update, the code for them is finished, and they behave as
I intend for them to. So I guess that explains why it slowed down, and even
froze your machine.

For everyone else, if you're using version 1.5b, and you experience this same
bug which allows you to buy piranha, I'd recommend that you don't simply
because you aren't supposed to be able to buy them until mission 7.

I'm still working on JAWS 12 support. JAWS has proved to be especially tricky
compared to NVDA and Window eyes.

Hey, Dark.
I agree with you. In some cases people just want to play these old dos
games because like myself I use to play them in school.
I myself just want to play these old games and not remake or change
anything. What will happen if nobody can get a hold of these different
people to ask about their games? It would be greatly sad if people can
still play some of these games and yet the people who have the games
won't pass them out to people like me who just want to play them.

[Audyssey] I killed luminals

2011-05-13 Thread Christopher Bartlett
Ok, by playing one tick at a time, I was able to play until I blew up the
game. At that point, I had amassed 8,932 piranha. I attempted to purchase
a kayman with my ill-gotten advertising loot and the game crashed. I have
sent the game save file to Jeremy directly (let me know if you don't get it,
I was going by memory for your email address). At that point, each tick was
taking upwards of 30 seconds to process, and movement from tile to tile was
similarly choked.

I think I can fairly say that piranha are broken.

Actually, I wonder if it's an artifact of the fact that animals don't appear
to have a life span? That is, they only appear to die when eaten or when
they starve. In an earlier mission, I had one turtle for multiple thousands
of ticks while I raised money to buy another one and messed with controlling
the fish population. There probably ought to be a chance of the creature
dying of natural causes that varies with the creature. The small ones
should have shorter life spans. I know this forces you to deal with
absolute time, but it's the only way I can see around the population
bottle-neck, unless there's just something you didn't do with piranhas that
you did with other creatures. Maybe have a percent chance of death that is
influenced by available food supply. As the supply vs. the demand goes
down, increase the chance of a given individual dying.

Hi,

Here is a message that I received from Alan.

Hi Jim,

I wanted to verify my facts about Harry Potter trivia 2. In chapter32 Flesh,
Blood, and Bone, It is not specifically named who kills Sedaric. The
implication is that it had to be Worm-Tail. What I went by was J K Rowling's
own words in Chapter37, The Beginning. Dumbledore is addressing the student
body and states that a toast is to be drunk to Sederick Digory. The student
body stands and echoes Sederick Digory. Dumbledore goes on to explain,
Sederick was a person
who exemplified many of the qualities that distinguish Hufflepuf house. Dumbledore continued. He was a good and loyal friend, a hard worker. He valued fair play. His death has effected you whether you knew him well or not. I think that you have the right therefore, to know exactly how it came about. Harry raised his head and stared at Dumbledore. Sederick Digory was murdered by Lord Voldimort. A panic whisper swept the great hall. People were staring at Dumbledore in disbelief. In horror. He looked perfectly calm is he watched them mutter themselves into silence. The ministry of magic, Dumbledore continued, does not wish me to tell you this. It is possible that some of your parents will be horrified that I have done so Either because they will not believe Voldimort has returned or, because they think I should not tell you so young as you are. It is my belief however, that the truth is generally preferable to lies and that any attempt to pretend that Sederick died as the result of an accident or some sort of blunder of his own, is an insult to his memory. For that reason, I went with voldimort killed Sederick as it does not clearly say that it was Worm-Tail but only implied.

Re: [Audyssey] Harry Potter Trivia 2

2011-05-13 Thread dark

Well I think this one is a litle contentious really.

Myself, I'd assumed killed meant did the deed, rather than gave the order.

While I see the point, to me Dumbledor was really just trying to make the
point about voldemort's return, and yes in truth if voldemort hadn't been
there sedric would've died, but in terms of the facts, I'd class it as
petigrew, certainly if petigrew were on trial for the murder him having
actually done the killing would be the telling fact, not who's orders he
worked on or who's wand he used.

I'd actually suggest Alan take petigrew out of the list of possible choices
for that question if he wants voldemort to be the right answer, sinse it
seems extremely unfair to mark people down for giving an answer which many
would considder correct.

Alternately, he could ask who according to professor dumbledor killed
Sedric which would specifically indicate to those who read the books what
he was refering to, though myself I'd just prefer petigrew removed from that
question choice.

Re: [Audyssey] Harry Potter Trivia 2

2011-05-13 Thread Charles Rivard

This text from Chapter 9 of the book shows the answer, in my opinion:

someone's coming, he said suddenly.

Squinting tensely through the darkness, they watched the figure drawing
nearer, walking steadily toward them between the graves. Harry couldn't
make out a face, but from the way it was walking and holding its arms, he
could tell that it was carrying something. Whoever it was, he was short,
and wearing a hooded cloak pulled up over his head to obscure his face.
And--several paces nearer, the gap between them closing all the time--Harry
saw that the thing in the person's arms looked like a baby . . . or was it
merely a bundle of robes?

Harry lowered his wand slightly and glanced sideways at Cedric. Cedric shot
him a quizzical look. They both turned back to watch the approaching
figure.

It stopped beside a towering marble headstone, only six feet from them. For
a second, Harry and Cedric and the short figure simply looked at one
another.

And then without warning, Harry's scar exploded with pain. It was pain such
as he had never felt in all his life; his wand slipped from his fingers as
he put his hands over his face; his knees buckled; he was on the ground and
he could see nothing at all; his head was about to split open.

From far away, above his head, he heard a high, cold voice say, Kill the

spare.

A swishing noise and a second voice, which screeched the words to the night;
Avada Kedavra!

Now, this shows clearly who gave the command. Voldemort had a high cold
voice. Wormtail, his servant, was carrying him because Voldemort was still
in a very weak condition. Wormtail was the short figure that Harry and
Cedric were seeing, carrying Voldemort. Voldemort told Petigrew to Kill
the spare. Wormtail then screeched the command and performed the curse
that killed Cedric. Based on the text from the book, it is not implied as
to who actually killed Cedric. It is clearly stated.

Well I think this one is a litle contentious really.

Myself, I'd assumed killed meant did the deed, rather than gave the
order.

While I see the point, to me Dumbledor was really just trying to make the
point about voldemort's return, and yes in truth if voldemort hadn't been
there sedric would've died, but in terms of the facts, I'd class it
as petigrew, certainly if petigrew were on trial for the murder him having
actually done the killing would be the telling fact, not who's orders he
worked on or who's wand he used.

I'd actually suggest Alan take petigrew out of the list of possible
choices for that question if he wants voldemort to be the right answer,
sinse it seems extremely unfair to mark people down for giving an answer
which many would considder correct.

Alternately, he could ask who according to professor dumbledor killed
Sedric which would specifically indicate to those who read the books what
he was refering to, though myself I'd just prefer petigrew removed from
that question choice.

2011-05-13 Thread Jeremy Kaldobsky
For anyone who missed the other post about piranha, I'll mention it here also.
The reason Chris ran into such crazy results with the piranha is that they
aren't supposed to be unlocked in version 1.5b. A glitch allows them to be
purchased, but in that version I hadn't finished programming them. Piranha
aren't supposed to be buyable until the next update I release, which has
mission 7.

Ok, by playing one tick at a time, I
was able to play until I blew up the
game.  At that point, I had amassed 8,932
 piranha.  I attempted to purchase
a kayman with my ill-gotten advertising loot and the game
 crashed.  I have
sent the game save file to Jeremy directly (let me know if
 you don't get it,
I was going by memory for your email address).  At
 that point, each tick was
taking upwards of 30 seconds to process, and movement from
 tile to tile was
 similarly choked.

I think I can fairly say that piranha are broken.

Actually, I wonder if it's an artifact of the fact that
 animals don't appear
to have a life span?  That is, they only appear to die
 when eaten or when
they starve.  In an earlier mission, I had one turtle
 for multiple thousands
of ticks while I raised money to buy another one and messed
 with controlling
the fish population.  There probably ought to be a
 chance of the creature
dying of natural causes that varies with the
 creature.  The small ones
should have shorter life spans.  I know this forces
 you to deal with
absolute time, but it's the only way I can see around the
 population
bottle-neck, unless there's just something you didn't do
 with piranhas that
you did with other creatures.  Maybe have a percent
 chance of death that is
influenced by available food supply.  As the supply
 vs. the demand goes
down, increase the chance of a given individual dying.

Chris, I was quite suprised when you started talking about
 the piranha!
Apparently you found a bug, because piranha aren't supposed
 to be available
for purchase until the next update that I haven't released
 yet.  They are
supposed to first show up in mission 7.  I've checked
 the code and I believe
I've fixed the bug, but there really isn't much of a reason
 for me to post
the patch yet, because I'm close to releasing mission 7
 anyways.

The reason you're having all of those problems with the
 piranha, is because
they weren't done being coded yet, in the version you're
 using.  Since I
believed they couldn't be purchased, that wouldn't normally
 have been a
problem.  On the next update, the code for them is
 finished, and they behave
as I intend for them to.  So I guess that explains why
 it slowed down, and
 even froze your machine.

For everyone else, if you're using version 1.5b, and you
 experience this
same bug which allows you to buy piranha, I'd recommend
 that you don't
simply because you aren't supposed to be able to buy them
 until mission 7.

I'm still working on JAWS 12 support.  JAWS has proved
 to be especially
tricky compared to NVDA and Window eyes.

Hey, Michael. Will you stop asking people for a copy of a game which has
already been shown as being copyrighted? You asked Phil, and he said that
he would not do so without permission from the creator. You asked if anyone
on the list would do so as a reply to a post that showed the copyright info.
What part of no don't you understand? If you do understand the concept of
no, why won't you take no for an answer? Quit flooding the list with
requests that you should already know the answer to. You're acting like the
little kid who goes to Mom for candy and she says No., so you go to Dad
for candy, he says No, so you go to brother, sister, uncle, aunt, cousin,
maybe someone, anyone at all, will give me what I want.

Re: [Audyssey] Star Wars Game Thoughts/Ideas

2011-05-13 Thread Thomas Ward
Hi Dark,

Lol! That's a great idea except you forgot the part about selecting a
Packman character. You should be able to select Mr. Packman, Ms.
Packman, or Packman Jr. :D

Anyway, I know there are still some games you can pick up and play
like the new Final Fight, but my point was that the MMO/RPG style of
games are increasingly becoming more popular. Take DC Universe as an
example. It is a massively huge game with several cities like
Metropolis, Gotham, and so on with several adventures, and of course
online pvp play. It just seems to me that games are becoming more
player vs player interactive, and heading to a total virtual reality
state where you can pick a character weather it is Star Wars, DC
Comics, or whatever and roll play him/her on the internet with other
like-minded players. The MMO/RPG genre/style of game is changing the
way we think of video games in general and are light years beyond the
games like Packman which started the video game craze 30 years ago. As
a game developer myself I often want to push myself to try and compete
or at least see if I can create something similar. I see it as a
challenge of my skills and talents as a programmer.

Cheers!

Sighted people and yourself have burnt out on those games but so far the

I hope you re-consider this stand against using them in your game.
The main reason to use known characters is that most people know who they
are and their attributes and skills.
With a game using unknown or background characters, you would have to
explain them to the game player.

As for copyright, you could call them,
Duke Flywalker, and Barth Bader.

2011-05-13 Thread Pitermach
I'd have to agree. I'm not that much into starwars - you know I sort of am
the I saw the movies and have a general understanding person, and most of
what you guys were talking about... mara jayde, all of those other
characters... I just have absolutely no idea who they are or how they came
to be. I think we're sort of getting at the same discussion we had about the
wrestling game, sort of.

Hi Thomas,
You wrote:

Skywalker, Darth Vader, etc simply because there is so much written
about them it is getting to be, for me at least, the same old thing

The one thing you didn't list is games with them.
I've gotten countless messages asking why Harry Potter isn't in my
Hogwarts game.
Sighted people and yourself have burnt out on those games but so far the
blind have been denied playing a truly accessible Star Wars game that
includes the big stars of the books and movies.

Re: [Audyssey] Star Wars Game Thoughts/Ideas

2011-05-13 Thread dark

Actually tom personally I don't particularly have any interest in pvp.

The modern rpg games that I'd most like to play are things like Dragon age,
the dragonlance series, and yes final fantasy, those which are not based on
some sort of online pvp interaction with other people, but are based on
having a large virtual world with a huge amount of stuff to explore and
interact with as a single player.

Personally this has always been my main interest in games, single player
exploration, rather than competing or rping with others.

while in the world of brouser based games and muds it's pretty hard to find
something which is a decent single player game, there are stil many games on
consoles which would be perfect for this if I were able to play them,
in fact some of the knights of the old republic games are very good
examples.

So, I'd personally prefer it if developers made good single player games,
rather than concentrating on pvp and interaction with others, especially in
the rpg genre where sinse most accessible games of this type are muds or
brouser based affairs, there really isn't much single player stuff
available.

Beware the gRue!

Hey Raul,
I'll be sorry to see you leave us. As a list member for about four or five
years I can safely say I have enjoyed some of your humorous messages and
game play recordings and walkthroughs etc. You have moderated the list with
a firm but fair approach and the list has been relatively calm despite a few
hitches.
All I can say is, on behalf of myself and the list, we wish you every
happiness in all that you do in the future. We wish you well with your job,
warmest regards to your family and the best of luck with any new challenges
you decide to face.
In my new position as list moderator I sincerely hope that Thomas and I can
cooperate alongside each other harmoniously as you have and thereby keep the
list running as smoothly as possible.

I know my speech wasn't very long or dramatic, but it came from my heart.
Do try to find time to play at least a few games. I'm sure you remember how
fun it is. Grin.

Stay well and all the best,

Re: [Audyssey] Star Wars Game Thoughts/Ideas

2011-05-13 Thread Thomas Ward
Hi Phil,

Right. I certainly understand your point of view. Sadly this is yet
again another clear example of how far we have to go to catch up with
the mainstream in terms of gaming. You certainly have a valid point,
but as I said since I've been there and done that already, so to
speak, its less apealing to me than starting out fresh with new
characters, a new back story, etc. I guess what I mean by that is when
I see a new series like Star Wars the Old Republic I want to jump
right in with the current stuff rather than going back and revisiting
the classic Star Wars series.

For instance, last year Dark Horse comics began publishing a new Star
Wars series called Star Wars the Old Republic set between 3,600 and
3,700 years before the Star Wars classic series, and they introduced a
new heroine named Setele Shan. Setele Shan is to the Old Republic
series what Luke Skywalker is to the classic series. She is a Jedi
Knight, supposably a descendeant of two great Jedis of the Knights of
the Old Republic series, and is the main protagonist of the new
series. It starts out in Blood of the Empire with the Sith Empire and
the Mandalorians joining forces to invade the Galactic Republic. Newly
promoted Jedi Knight, Setele Shan, is sent to the frontlines to help
battle and stop the enemy forces. Eventually, her nemesis, Darth
Malgus, launches a strike at the heart of the Republic by invading
Alderan. Setele Shan shows up just in time to defeat Malgus, and and
the Republic manages to force the Sith back to the Outer Rim systems.
Where upon Setele Shan is promoted to the rank of master, and earns a
seat on the Jedi High Council. In 36,53 the Sith Empire decides to
make piece with the Republic and Setele Shan is sent by the Jedi High
Council as one of their chief diplomats. In the years following the
Galactic War Setele Shan eventually becomes a Jedi Grand Master and
the head of the Jedi High Council. Basically, the same position Yoda
would hold in the Clone Wars series and Luke Skywalker would hold in
the New Jedi Order series.

What I'm saying is that the new series is really fresh. Setele Shan is
now in comic books, starting to appear in novels like Deceived and
Fatal Alliance, is suppose to be one of the main npc characters in the
new Old Republic game from Bioware, and I've heard that Hazbro is
going to be launching an all new 2011 line up of action figures like
Darth Malgus, Setele Shan, Aryn Leneer, etc from the new comics and
games. Its not that using someone like Setele Shan in a game is
totally unknown, but very very new. However, you are absolutely right
that using someone like Setele Shan instead of someone like Luke
Skywalker could lead to a lot of questions about the main character,
the Sith Empire, and other elements of the game's story since not
everyone is a life long Star Wars fan like I am and don't keep up with
the latest news and information.

Anyway, when I said I was leaning against using Luke Skywalker and
other big name main characters like that I did not mean to imply that
I could never or would never use those characters in a Star Wars game.
After all, now that I have a game engine I could probably produce
several different Star Wars games set in different time periods using
different characters. Its just that right now my personal interests
are with the new stuff, and I'd like to experience the same things
that my fellow mainstream gamers have accesss to like the Star Wars
Old Republic series of games that are just now coming onto the market.
Since I was sighted when the Super Star Wars games came out back in
the early 90's etc that's pretty much old news to me. That doesn't
mean I don't like them and have no interest in creating something like
that it just feels like spending my time on something I've already
played before when I want to experience something new. Which is really
where the diference between the other gamers on this list and myself
come in.

I was sighted, experienced playing a various Star Wars games
first-hand before losing my sight, and while I wouldn't mind having
some accesible Star Wars games like that available I'd like to move on
and catch up with the mainstream Star Wars games. On the other hand
since the blind have had no access to games from the 80's and 90's its
all new to them. So for me it all comes down to a choice of spending
time working on creating a game similar to what I've played before
losing my sight, or starting out fresh with something new. I can do
both, but it also is a question of time and energy. Since I only have
a limited amount of both I'd prefer to start out, at least for the
time being, with something new and slightly original.

Cheers!

Re: [Audyssey] Star Wars Game Thoughts/Ideas

2011-05-13 Thread Thomas Ward
Hi Dark,

Same here. While I love RPG games I'm not really into the pvp aspects
either. Like you I am a loner and prefer to play the game world as a
single player. If I'm going to play something like Star Wars the Old
Republic I want to enter that world as a single player. If I'm a
Mandalorian bounty hunter for hire I want to train up my skills and
find out how much hell I can raise in the Galactic Republic without
other gamers interfering in my gaming experience. In large part
because in many pvp games I've tried I always encounter my share of
people who are heavy into the god-moding aspect and will screw with
you just for the fun of it. You might have just created a new
character have some basic skills in place and along comes some pvp
character trained to the max and he kicks your butt just because he
can. I hate that crap.

For instance, a couple of years back I was looking for text based Star
Wars RPG games. I found one and it was set during the Old Republic and
you were a Sith Warrior being trained at the Sith Academy.
Unfortunately, for me it was totally pvp based. I had just got my
account setup, just created my Sith Warrior, and along comes some guy
with a Sith Warrior trained up to the rank of Darth and he slaughtered
me for no good reason. When I made a complaint to the gm he made a
rather rude comment that the guy was just acting in character of a
Sith Warrior. That only the strongest survive etc. That was very
unfair since I had just started playing the game, didn't even know
really how to play it, and I should have been challenged by someone of
a much lower rank so I could try and kill him and take his place in
the Sith order. Instead I'm put in to a duel with a master, and the
rest of the players basically told me if I don't like it then leave.
So I left. That case in particular really turned me off on pvp games
of any kind because I don't like being sport for some player who has
been around for a long time, and has some mondo cool super character.

Cheers!

[Audyssey] Games, Games, and more Games!

2011-05-13 Thread Louis Bryant
Hello all fellow game players,
The multi-platform translator is pretty much complete! This means BrailleSoft
can continue creating software for 3 platforms now, and can add more in the
future very easily and all programs we write will run on them upon simply
re-compilation! The platforms we can support now are PAC Mate Omni,
BraillePlus, and Android! We will see software in the next coming months, as
well as updated PAC Mate software that will obviously be new to BraillePlus and
Android. If you run Microsoft Windows, you aren't left out at all, just make
sure you have .NET 3.5 installed! I will soon test with Mono, and if anyone
else can test and let me know results then targetting other platforms won't be
a problem. Well, the next email you see will be about a new released game. If
it is text-based, I may consider writing a Braille Lite version as well. HTH.

Re: [Audyssey] Star Wars Game Thoughts/Ideas

2011-05-13 Thread Thomas Ward
Hi Pitermach,

Well, see that's the problem with something like Star Wars though. Its
grown way beyond the original books and movies. There are several
different series, several books, cartoons, games, and comicbooks.
There is so much history and so many expanded characters that it would
be impossible for me to fully explain it to someone like yourself. I
guess if you wanted to know who Mara Jade was, how she became Luke
Skywalker's wife, you'd have to read all the books she was in. Not
only that you would certainly want to read them in some chronilogical
order as Mara Jade started out as a Sith apprentice of the Emperor's
but Luke eventually turned her to the light side of the force, and
eventually they fell in love and married in the later books. She has
become an extremely important character in the expanded universe, and
for someone like myself Mara Jade is as well known to me as Luke
Skywalker. The best I could doo is point you to an article on
Wookieepedia.com which gives you a revised history of her life and
death in the expanded universe.

Cheers!

Hi Clement,

While I agree a game based on the Yuuzan Vong war would be cool I
don't believe I could come up with any sounds that would fit. Its one
thing to read about organic weapons etc in a book and quite another to
invent sound effects from scratch to try and emulate what the books
describe.

Besides as I said I'm personally getting just a bit tired of the main
characters. I grew up with Luke Skywalker, Han Solo, Leia, and they
have been the main focus for over 30 years. I'm finding the Old
Republic series etc a nice refresh from all that because there are all
new characters and situations available to read and write about that
take place thousands of years before Luke, Han, Leia, etc were born. I
think this apeals to my historian side. I like exploring what life
might have been like thousands and thousands of years before the
modern era.

As far as your suggestion goes basically what you are saying is start
small and think bigger. That makes sense, but it also has to be
something I have to be happy with too. Something I'll commit too for
the long hall.

For instance, I've never been completely happy with MOTA. Its not a
bad game, but my principle complaint is it wasn't written the way I
wanted it to be written. I wanted a full blown FPS like Tomb Raider
not a side-scroller. As a result of this I'm now having to split my
time between writing the side-scroller the community wants and the FPS
that I want. Its taking a lot out of me physically, emotionally, and
financially and you can see it has been a month-and-a-half since beta
18 just because I'm spending time with essentually two games instead
of one. I'll never ever do it again for anyone. From now on I'll
decide on a single format and run with it when it comes to game
projects.

Basically, what I'm saying is I'll certainly listen to suggestions
etc, but in the end I'll be making the final calls on format etc. I'm
just finding out where the lists interests are right now. Which styles
etc people would prefer before I start into this projectin the future.

like all your ideas... and although it would be hard to find sound
effects to fit, I would really, really like to see a game based in
the NJO timeline.

Thanks a million guys! I had no idea that the demo was on a, per boot, basis.
I agree that it would be easy for people to just, Not, use JAWS, but if I can,
I'm trying to accommodate everyone. In the long run it is good for me to
figure this out, because all my future games will support everything, and I can
go back and add the support to past projects, like DarkGrue.

I didn't get the custom game feature ready for this release, so I apologize to
anyone who was specifically waiting for it. I had it pretty close, but I've
decided to wait on including it because I have a handful of other things I'd
like to add to it. I'm guessing the 7 existing missions are enough to keep
people busy for a little while at least. As always, please share any
suggestions with me.

Re: [Audyssey] Star Wars Game Thoughts/Ideas

2011-05-13 Thread dark

Hi tom.

Your experience in that starwars game sound distressingly familiar. I've
been searching for a decent text rp game for a long while precisely for this
reason, and most things I've found have either been so fully of other
players bent on pvp you can't engage in the story, or, have so litle story
you have to engage in pvp just to keep things interesting.

For instance last year I reviewed unification wars. This interested me sinse
it was a stratogy game where you ruled a galactic empire, and yet had single
player missions to complete making up a story, for instance one involved
putting enough government resources by to create a university so that you
could send an archaeological team to explore alien ruins on other planets.

The problem? The amount of times I was attacked and my planets pinched by
other players made completing these missions almost impossible.

i'd been through the standard tutorial which fitted me with a reasonable
starting force, but several powerful players just turned up and destroyed
everything I had.

This for me is an absolute turn off, but unfrotuantely sinse most muds and
rpg games online are! multiplayer, people want to interact with eachother
and that usually means pvp, in fact a lot of games I've seen like the Dark
grimoire and time hunter are pretty dull unless! you do pvp, sinse they
really have litle else to offer but grind grind grind!

This is why I'd love to see developers working on games with actual story
and exploration elements.

Beware the grue!

Dark.

Your point about moving forward instead of sticking to tradition makes
sense. I dunno... maybe I just miss old beat em ups. I'd love to see a
modern game with all the chracteristics of final fight and streets of
Rage. Those were good times.

As to darth bane, I put a lot of time into reading those books... and if
you made one game that spread over the period of path of destruction as
well as rule of two, you would have somewhat more enemy variety. And this
could also be a way to progres... since if you remember, Darth Bane was a
kid on a mining planet who routinely got himself into trouble. Then he
escaped, joined a group of sith troopers who were soldiers for the sith
army, and then finally moved up to the academy... and grew to be darth
bane despite the fact that by that time the academy had abandoned the use
of the darth title. The first book climaxes with the Jedi and Sith
battling on a remote planet and the sith committing basically suicide and
taking the Jedi with them. Bane is the only one left... and thus begins
his rule of two.

Re: [Audyssey] Star Wars Game Thoughts/Ideas

2011-05-13 Thread Thomas Ward
HI Dark,

I hear you there. That's precisely why I was throwing the Star Wars
RPG game idea out there for people to ponder. There aren't that many
RPG games for a blind gamer to play and what games there are are lax
on story, focussed on pvp play, and grind, grind, grind. Thus far the
only two roll playing games i am willing to pay for is Sryth which
I've always liked, and of course now Entombed. Both games are good in
that the focus isn't on pvp play, and you have to unlock certain
adventures or tasks based on your skill level and what you have
completed. This makes the game far more balanced.

For example, let's assume I am creating a Star Wars game and you
decide to become a human Jedi apprentice. Ok, you are a brand new
character so you are going to have to have some easy tasks to help
build up your skills and experience. Obviously, the first thing to do
is select your starting skills and apply your experience points
accordingly. Then, you need to visit the Jedi Academy to get some
further training from the Jedi masters. From there once you have
reached a certain level as an apprentice you can take on some more
difficult tasks for the Jedi order such as fighting smugglers,
capturing an escaped criminal, or some other task that doesn't require
a fully trained Jedi master to handle.

You might be patroling the walkways of Coriscant when you hear someone
cry out in pain. You Investigate to find two aliens atacking someone
dressed in a Republic S.I.S. uniform. You quickly activate your light
saber and cut down the attacking aliens. Before the S.I.S. agent dies
he hands you a data disc containing Republic Intelligence of an
illegal spice shipment at the nearby spaceport. After reading the
discs contents on your data comp you realise you are the only one near
enough to intercept and stop the shipment. You slip out of your Jedi
robes, and put on some sort of uniform and slip into the spaceport.
You successfully intercept the smugglers, destroy the spice, and hand
the smugglers over to Republic security. You get experience points you
can train up your skills and powers for the next missions etc. That
kind of mission is fantastic for a new gamer as it might not require
heavy force skills and perfect saber training to accomplish. Its
definitely not like walking out of the academy on day one and facing
an elite member of the Sith Council or something that would be a
challenge for a Jedi Master let alone a new apprentice. Plus this
definitely is a decent storyline without a complex plot to break you
into the game.

Cheers!

 Dark.

I've just uploaded version 1.6b which has mission 7, the piranha species,
and limited JAWS 12 support. I downloaded their 40 minute trial but the
 darn thing expired

 time I would

another 40 minutes. Has anyone tried that before?

Hi guys. This afternoon I spent some more time changing some of the GG
 sounds.

 Changes.
 1. The outlaws will now draw and holster there guns.
 2. bosses have a new gun sound, or should I say sounds as it depends on
 each
boss as they each have there own sounds.
 3. When you shoot someone you can now here them fall to the ground. s p o
 i
 l e r s p a c e spoiler spoiler spoiler! When you do not shoot skeeter in
time he twirls his gun and puts it back in the holster!

Hope you all like the new changes... Just unzip the files and place them
 in
the sounds directory make sure you say yes to all to overwrite the old
 files.

Let me know what you think.

Not sure if anyone's played this yet... it's another game madness
production... the same folks who brought you battle zone. This is another
fun game, but there seems to be a bit of a glitch... there'll come one
point during the first level or the second one where an enemy will be on
the screen, but you won't be able to shoot it. Dunno why that is... but
there you go. Also, does someone happen to know where this game's music is

from, those who have played it? Because I know this music... from either a

game or a movie, and that's going to eat away at me until I find out. lol.

Thanks a million guys! I had no idea that the demo was on a, per boot,
basis. I agree that it would be easy for people to just, Not, use JAWS, but
if I can, I'm trying to accommodate everyone. In the long run it is good
for me to figure this out, because all my future games will support
everything, and I can go back and add the support to past projects, like
DarkGrue.

I didn't get the custom game feature ready for this release, so I apologize
to anyone who was specifically waiting for it. I had it pretty close, but
I've decided to wait on including it because I have a handful of other
things I'd like to add to it. I'm guessing the 7 existing missions are
enough to keep people busy for a little while at least. As always, please
share any suggestions with me.

2011-05-13 Thread Jeremy Kaldobsky
When I learned that I could just reboot to get more time with the JAWS demo, it
helped me a ton. After messing around with it for a while, I threw up my hands
and decided I'm tired of looking at it today. Haha! For some reason, it will
work for me, then suddenly stop, then start again. Until I sort it out, I'll
just leave the game running with NVDA and Window eyes.

If you're stuck on a mission and really want some help, you could post your
save game file for others to look at. Being able to actually load up your save
game would give us the freedom to look around at your dome, looking for reasons
that you're stuck. It's just an idea, but I'm willing to help, if I can.

well if we could get his email that would rock.
The games really rock.
it would be good to get them converted to windows.
Firstly since they were designed for the 386 all sound goes crazy fast.
one thing I noticed with my games, say frotz or tads using the
emulators or even the standalone games or even agt games is they will
play but hitting backspace is hmmm impossible.

all keys bar the back space key work.
Its my ownly complaint otherwise standard dos under ntvdm and the cmd
.exe system files works.
I wouldn't mind another emulator which would allow the deleting of
characters though.

 Hi Folks,
 I found my copy of
 DESTINATION MARS
 Version 2.1

Unless I get a confirmation directly from Richard that his games

To those suggesting that Jeremy ignore the leading (by numbers) screen
reader on the market, (whether you like it or not is immaterial actually),
you are really going to tell someone who doesn't know NVDA or SATOGO to
learn a whole new screen reader just to play a game, albeit a fascinating
and addicting one. I find JFW provoking and like some of what NVDA does, so
I'm willing to go there as I'm already mildly familiar with it, but that's
not the way to spread a game, which is after all the point. Am I missing
something other than the usual anti-FS snark here?

When I learned that I could just reboot to get more time with the JAWS demo,
it helped me a ton. After messing around with it for a while, I threw up my
hands and decided I'm tired of looking at it today. Haha! For some reason,
it will work for me, then suddenly stop, then start again. Until I sort it
out, I'll just leave the game running with NVDA and Window eyes.

If you're stuck on a mission and really want some help, you could post your
save game file for others to look at. Being able to actually load up your
save game would give us the freedom to look around at your dome, looking for
reasons that you're stuck. It's just an idea, but I'm willing to help, if I
can.

Re: [Audyssey] Lunimals feedback

2011-05-13 Thread Christopher Bartlett
Warning: something of a S P O I L E R! S P O I L E R! Read at your own
risk, this text direct to you from the heart of the Fukushima reactor, etc,
etc.

So beating the fish and turtles thing is a bit of a slog, but there's a
consistent setup I use that gets me to the tricky part. Buy two, and only
two fish. Monitor their numbers *very* carefully. When they reach 7, sell
the extra 5 to get back down to 2. (You may find a time where you have 8
because of happy, reproductive fish, sell 6). You need to do this in order
to make sufficient money to get your first turtle. Keep cycling through
until you have your $160,000.

Buy 1 and only 1 turtle. Now your fish balancing gets slightly trickier. I
found that keeping 4 fish as the minimum to sell down to seemed to work
pretty well. When you have 9 or 10 fish, sell down to four. Keep bringing
in that advertising and sales money until you are ready for your second
turtle.

Now here's the art, and where my instructions get a little fuzzy. When
you're about to buy your second turtle, you have to begin letting the fish
population grow a little more. I think 13 to 15 was the number I chose for
the minimum, so let it grow to 18-20 and sell down. The tricky part is that
in this region, reproduction isn't predictably one at a time, so you will
have to catch it quickly. Too few and the turtles eat them. Too many, and
you have a population explosion and subsequent crash, and with 2 turtles,
that crash might be fatal to your fish.
If you screw up and have an explosion with less than 2 turtles, you'll be
fine, ride it out until the numbers crash back down into the low teens then
start over. Your biggest enemy is power loss and being unable to sell, so
monitor your power consumption carefully.

I'm not seeing a huge effect of bug numbers on the fish cycle. I think a
large bug reproduction simply lengthens the cycle. I haven't tried
balancing fish with only algae though so that effect may be more significant
than I think.

Note, this same strategy will work in a modified form for the later parts of
mission 6, though there, you're working with land animals, and mice are more
forgiving than fish.

I'm currently stuck on the part of mission 7 with the added loan. That
quarter million every 120 ticks is brutal. I've also had a hell of a time
keeping squirrels alive if there's anything else in the dome. For fun, I
started rabbits and squirrels to see if I could get a sustainable population
before introducing mice. The mice are too efficient acorn eaters to allow
the squirrels to live in any of my domes so far. I did get a stable rabbit
population to coexist with maximized mice, but it hovered around 5-10
rabbits after the die-off that came with the mouse explosion.

Can you tell I've been thinking a lot about this game? Well done Jeremy,
and I'm excited to see what comes next.
