have just opened.
This is exactly how it already works.
1. Open an image
2. Export it to something else.
3. Use Ctrl+E to overwrite that something else.

...and after someone else's suggestion on the Debian
list, renamed ~/.config/gtk/filechooser.ini, but it didn't help either.
This happens under Gnome and other window managers. Weird.

Before I could be of much help, I'd need to know exactly what kind of
transformations you want to do. For example, select a particular image
(to which you might provide a link) and describe exactly what you'd like
changed.

make a rough metallic surface and I ended up with this by
fiddling
around with a back-to-white gradient and emboss it. I finally
got a clean
200x200 image that alings seamlessy and can be used as a
pattern:
