Re: [Gimp-user] Problem with text
If it's the same issue, it's been happening to me for quite some time now. https://imgur.com/SYDKSAH.png The only solution I've found that works every time is to discard the text information, lock the alpha channel, and fill with the color you want. Depending on the mode, desaturating still leaves some remnants behind for me. (Say you wanted to use the non-standard location, or add a second location to store your plugins) You can't drag a file there. Put simply, gimp doesn't need to be opened to install the plugin. Actually it should be closed so it can find the new plugin when it restarts, So copy or move the file using windows explorer only. [Gimp-user] Gimp crash on copy/paste
I'm hoping there is a troubleshooting guru out there willing to help me. I've been dealing with this problem for months now and really want to get to the bottom of it. I use gimp every single day but I am unable to use copy/paste. Others have experienced this problem and it seemed to always be related to clipboard managers. I followed all the threads and bug reports I could find on the problem and most all were fixed by removing their clipboard managers. I both tried every single CBM I could find and ended up removing them all, but the problem persists. IIRC, it was happening back in 2.8 as well and has persisted through all the 2.10 updates. My setup and stack trace are posted on the Gnome site. https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/gimp/issues/789 Also there is the output of "yaourt clipboard manager" which shows all the available CBMs in both Arch proper and the aur, which shows that none are installed. I am willing to track down any leads given, but I'm out of my depth on exactly what to try next. *Prostrates self to the gimp gods* -- akovia ___ gimp-user-list mailing list List address:gimp-user-list@gnome.org List membership: https://mail.gnome.org/mailman/listinfo/gimp-user-list List archives: https://mail.gnome.org/archives/gimp-user-list

Re: [Gimp-user] Source of photos
Just as another option for PC, Mac, or Linux is XnView/XnViewMP. It's a great image viewer/organizer/converter and would use it regardless, but you can configure multiple programs to open an image in and then access them by shortcuts. When I find an image I want to open in gimp I just hit "Alt+1" and it opens gimp if not already open, or opens image in a new tab. It also has the added benefit of decent support for xcf thumbnails so you can browse your gimp files, and it's free for personal use. Re: [Gimp-user] Let's discuss about the text tool
It's unreasonable to use gimp to recreate a logo of maybe two to three words? I certainly don't need a full blown text editor for that and would look elsewhere when I do. Not sure if you read my reply, but I only spoke about an existing feature that is unusable in certain situations such as being zoomed in while trying to get an alignment correct. Unless this is by design for some reason, I would think this would be considered a bug or an incomplete feature. I just wanted to bring light to it as others have in the hopes that a solution might be found. I will continue to work around the problem as I always have. I wasn't bitching or complaining about it, only adding another voice to let the devs know this isn't just an edge case problem and effects more than just the OP. Feedback is usually the path progress which was my goal. Re: [Gimp-user] Let's discuss about the text tool
I use the text tool a lot myself and have just come to work around most the annoyances. I realize that it's a tricky situation as there are a ton of variables to consider as well as multiple workflows. I am just chiming in to agree wholeheartedly with #4. I recreate logos and have to match fonts to text in an image. In doing so I am constantly zooming in to get the kerning correct which puts the floating box with the kerning adjustment out of view. I have to zoom out to make an adjustment and back in to check it. This can get painful after a while. Of course I wish the floating panel would "float" within the viewport, but I'd be just as happy to have the adjustment available in the tool panel if that's the only way to get it to work. Baseline and any other controls that are exclusive to the floating panel should be available in the tool panel if the floating panel cannot be kept in view at all times. I've been very happy with this app when I've had need to do some semi-serious editing on my phone. Either use the undo (CTRL+z) if you don't like the results, or make a bunch of stroke layers with different effects and turn the visibility on and off for each so you can see the differences. -- akovia ___ gimp-user-list mailing list List address:gimp-user-list@gnome.org List membership: https://mail.gnome.org/mailman/listinfo/gimp-user-list List archives: https://mail.gnome.org/archives/gimp-user-list
[Gimp-user] Create new Layer - Modifiers
I constantly use the Shift modifier to "create a new layer with last used values", but I'd love the ability to extend this with the CTRL modifier to place the new layer *under* the current layer. I realize it's a small thing to drag the layer after it's placed to wherever you want it, but I'm always looking for ways to streamline with shortcuts wherever possible. On that same note, would it be possible to use other combos to place the type of layer you want directly? Shift + B (Click New Layer) = New Layer with Background Color Ctrl + Shift + B (Click New Layer) = New Layer with Background Color Under current layer Shift + T (Click New Layer) = New Transparent Layer Ctrl + Shift + T (Click New Layer) = New Transparent Layer Under current layer etc... I realize that some of those combos are already used (minus the clicking), but if the action was available, it could be customized to the user preference. You have to make a selection first before you can grow a selection. R-Click on the text layer and choose "Alpha to Selection". Make sure to add another layer and select it to fill the selection. You won't be able use that selection on your text layer unless you R-Click on the text layer and choose "Discard Text Information" first. I actually thought about it not knowing it was created by the ellipse tool, but I figured it must have had something to do with the "Selection to Path Advanced Settings" since I assumed the ellipse tool would make a perfect circle/ellipse, and the vast settings in the advanced dialog was muffing it up in favor of better results over a wider range of paths. I also figured it must be something difficult or it would have been implemented sooner. It just seems like one of those obvious things you'd expect to work but doesn't. I'll just keep working around the issue as needed. I don't stroke very often, so when I do I can weigh my options then. For the work I'm doing, gimp has been the perfect tool. I can use gimp's features to find edges, give contrast, and many other functions on the fly while tracing a path. I also have no need to scale up after making a path for this work. I always start with the largest source I can find and always scale down from there. Not having to switch between programs saves me a lot of time. When I need to create a vector image, or have use for angled guides, I will then fire up Inkscape. It just strikes me funny that there is a built in excuse to not improve, or fix bugs for the path tool. "Use Inkscape" It's not a bad excuse for sure, but when functionality is going backwards, I would think it should be looked at and fixed if possible. Re: [Gimp-user] Path Tool Annoyances
> The problem could be a result of drawing curves with too many nodes: > When drawing with Bezier curves, I consider a node without handles > a redundant node. I always try to use the least amount of nodes necessary, but there are times when tracing around a low res image with lots of jaggedness like a straw hat, where I will just trace around by placing nodes instead of trying to pull out every handle a micrometer. I do think this is more about workflow though. Some people will place a node and adjust the path for that node right then. Rinse, repeat. I tend to place all my nodes first and then come back around and adjust the path. It's when laying down my "outline" nodes that the handles get pulled out from time to time. When I come back to adjust my paths, there are times like on straight lines where a path doesn't appear to need adjusted so I just move past it. Not until I try my stroke do I find out that a handle is out. > When turning sharp corners, I zoom in and place the corner node's handles on > the lines leading away from the vertex. This is exactly the problem. The only way to ensure this is to zoom in to almost max extents on every single node. This is very cumbersome and time consuming and was not required before. I've already done a few things with my workflow to try and compensate for this, especially if I know ahead of time I will be stoking the path, but it's been difficult to completely change everything about how I work after doing it successfully for years a certain way without problems. The other part of my workflow is that I tend to grab the path itself and not the handle for some adjustments. If I do this now and don't grab the path very close to the base of a node, it will inevitably drag out the opposing nodes handle ever so slightly, but you really don't see it happening while working. I've been working hard to only adjust a path by pulling out the handle explicitly, but my muscle memory is hard to overcome. :P > The errors I see when stroking paths usually happen when paths turn > sharp corners; this is fixable by adjusting the mitre limit in the > stroke style dialog. If this can't be fixed to work like it used to be, maybe something can be done to change the nodes to visibly show when a handle is out by changing the color or something? You either need to pull out each handle in the proper direction, or zoom in on each node and delete the handles all together. Seems this triggers > some cairo misfeatures... > > How did you create that path? Simon, I honestly think that maybe the new cairo is "too" precise. What happens is when you lay down your nodes and your mouse isn't completely still, it will drag out a handle as if you were holding down the button and dragging intentionally. I'm not sure if it has to do with the resolution of your mouse, meaning the more precise your mouse is, the more likely you are to drag out a handle? No matter the case, the faster you lay down your nodes, the more likely this is to happen. I've never had a problem as bad willthefifth, but I'm conscious of how it happens so I do my best to avoid it. Unfortunately it still happens. If the ability to drag out handles could be suppressed with a setting or a modifier, this could be avoided. -- akovia ___ gimp-user-list mailing list List address:gimp-user-list@gnome.org List membership: https://mail.gnome.org/mailman/listinfo/gimp-user-list List archives: https://mail.gnome.org/archives/gimp-user-list
Re: [Gimp-user] Path Tool Annoyances
Just revisiting this to see if it can get a little love. I don't stroke every path I make, but when I do I am still faced with a lot of extra work to repair the handles. I've given this a bit more thought on how to fix this issue and came up with two ways that maybe can work together. 1. A setting or a keyboard modifier that prevents handles being pulled out when placing nodes. 2. A threshold slider in the strokes dialog to ignore handles within a certain margin. The first option would help prevent problems when creating the path. The second would overcome previously created paths, or fix problems when dragging out handles by accident when manipulating the path by the line instead of by the handles themselves. Here is a full size example of a render I did. If you zoom in to 100% and follow the path around, you can see how many problems there are. I understand it only takes 5-10 mins to go back and fix, but it really is frustrating. https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/93550827/Forums/gimp-nodes1.jpg Cheers On Fri, Mar 14, 2014, at 08:02 PM, akovia wrote: > > > On Fri, Mar 14, 2014, at 07:05 PM, Simon Budig wrote: > > akovia (akov...@eml.cc) wrote: > > > > I don't understand what you mean by "gap"? Re: [Gimp-user] Cannot click anything
This is a shot in the dark, but it kinda sounds like there may be a filter window open in the background. Probably not, but many a time I've opened up a dialog and then got distracted and that window went to the background under the main gimp window and it takes me a while to figure it out. Hope you sort it out though. Gimp has always been stable for me. Cheers On Wed, Mar 18, 2015, at 06:18 PM, Pat David wrote: What OS are you on? Re: [Gimp-user] Strugglign with Smooth Edges
Hi again, Sorry I haven't responded sooner but my main computer took a dump and am just checking my mail from my laptop. I'm not exactly sure what you are having trouble with, but it kinda sounds like you are not understanding how paths work. The path you created is available to use on any layer. They are completely separate from your regular layers. So say you wanted to create your footprint on a transparent background. You would just create a new layer in your layers menu, and choose transparent. (either click the new layer icon at the bottom of the layers menu, or Layer New Layer from the main menu.) Select that new layer and then go to the paths menu to select the path you just made. (You don't have to turn the visibility on for the path, just make sure that the path layer is highlighted.) Then use the path to selection button like I showed in the video to make your marching ants. Now go back to the layers menu and fill the marching ants with whatever color you want. Of course you can also make a new layer with any colored background you like and do the same thing. You can have as many layers as you like with footprints on all of them in all kinds of different color combinations. When you find something you like, just turn off the visibility of every other layer except the one you like, and then export that image. Make sure you save the image as a .png file if you are using transparency. Otherwise, you will probably want to export as a jpg. I hope that's what what you were having trouble with. If not, try to explain again and I'll do my best to help. Cheers. On Sat, Sep 20, 2014, at 11:45 AM, NoWhizzKid wrote: Me again! Re: [Gimp-user] Strugglign with Smooth Edges
Image Scale I understand wanting to jump right in and wanting it to work, but if you don't have a basic understanding of image editing programs in general, it can be hard to grasp at first. If you aren't the type that learns from book or manual reading, (I'm not) you might try one a the various gimp tutorials out there aimed at beginners. I made a 5 part series myself you might find useful. https://fanart.tv/tutorials/gimp-from-scratch-part-1/ Try not to get too frustrated. There is very little that gimp can't do, which means it is a very complex piece of software that can take a little time to grasp. Once you do, you will astounded on what you can accomplish. Re: [Gimp-user] Pasting an image results in outline only moving
Sounds like the layer is still a floating selection. If this is the case, you should see a layer at the top of your layers dialog the reads Floating Selection (pasted layer) When you make the selection, (marching ants) you can use your regular copy paste shortcuts. Ctrl+C Ctrl+v After you enter Ctrl+v, just click the new layer button at the bottom of the layers window. This will put your selection on a new separate layer. This will also give you the freedom to move it around for placing it on whatever background layer you are using. [Gimp-user] Recent thumb browser tab
Hi, I would like to request a feature but I'm not sure exactly what to request. I work with a lot of xcf's and images at a time and it would be nice if I could save a session of open tabs, or even better, some way to manage projects. A project being a set of images including xcf's that I could hopefully browse the thumbs of and could open a single image from the project, or open them all. When I'm in the middle of a project now and either have a gimp crash (rare), or have to reboot for a kernel update, I either have to write down all my open files, or save them all so they will be at the top of my document history to make it easy to reopen them. Either way is cumbersome and seems like there should be a better way. Also, I feel like the document history tab could use some loving. The thumbs are very small and most of my file names are longer than what fits inside the tab without scrolling back and forth. I'd love to see resizable thumbs and an option to show thumbs only without any text. You can see the path and file name much better anyway when you hover the thumb, so it seems like wasted space to show it by default. This way you could have a grid of thumbs instead, allowing you to see much more of the history without scrolling forever. So I guess in a perfect world, I would have a project management tab that would list my projects and could browse the thumbs of the project by selecting it from the list. Be able to add and remove files from a project. Have a default project/session that will ask if you want to restore all previously open tabs on restarting gimp. (Like a browser does) And of course having a better document history browser. [Gimp-user] Path Advanced Settings
I can't find any useful information on using these settings effectively. I don't consider myself stupid or a genius but I think you might need a degree to make sense of these controls. I realize that explanations are provided but it's still very cumbersome and confusing. I always wondered for instance why you can create a perfect circle with the Ellipse Select Tool, but converting it to path gives horrible results. To make a perfect vector circle I have to use a shape path plugin and enter coordinate and radius values which is time consuming. There really should be an easy way to make a simple vector circle. Anyway, I thought it would be a huge improvement to select a few key controls that make the most useful differences and give the user an intermediate set of sliders with meaningful names and explanations. If it was possible to preview the results live it would truly be a impressive tool. Something along the lines of the design philosophy of the new Transformation Tool. [Gimp-user] Path Tool Annoyances
I've posted before about the new path tool problems but nothing really came of it. I just had a few new things to add. The main problem is when trying to stroke a hand made path. If either handle is even the slightest bit pulled out, it will interrupt the stroke and leave a gap. This is a problem for 2 reasons. 1. When placing nodes, the new tool is too sensitive and I think it could use some sort of threshold adjustment. Unless you concentrate to make sure the mouse is completely still when placing the node, click the mouse and fully release the button before the slightest movement, it will inevitably pull the handles out the tiniest bit. This can be very hard to see if you aren't zoomed in extremely close, and really destroys your workflow. 2. My path workflow has always been to just drag the path itself out away from the node to draw out the handles. This again now will affect the handle on the opposing node and push out the handle the slightest bit and mess up the stroke. I believe the old path tool probably reacted in nearly the same way, but the stroke was never left with these gaps. Something about the new tool is different and requires superior precision on handle placement or you will experience this trouble. So for the longest time now I've had to go back and edit these nodes at full zoom to remove the errant handles or I can never get a clean stroke. I even try to make sure every handle is out and pointing in a good direction to save myself some time in the end, but neither way is as quick as the old path tool. I'm not sure if the path tool is low priority or not, but before the upgrade, it was a superior tool. I'm all for precision, but there needs to be a threshold adjustment or something to ignore handles that are pulled out by less than X-px. 1 would be a great starting point. :P -- akovia ___ gimp-user-list mailing list List address:gimp-user-list@gnome.org List membership: https://mail.gnome.org/mailman/listinfo/gimp-user-list List archives: https://mail.gnome.org/archives/gimp-user-list

I am always aware when I pop out the opposing handle in any meaningful way, but this happens at such a small scale that I never know it till I'm trying to stroke something. I believe the old path tool probably reacted in nearly the same way, but the stroke was never left with these gaps. Again - I have no idea what gaps you are referring to. Maybe a screenshot can help. Hopefully the screenshot will clear it up. It's very easily reproducible by just zooming in all the way and tweak a handle in some odd way the slightest bit. I didn't try to find the worst example, but sometimes it will leave a huge gap unlike the small one in the screenshot. There is no ready made way to create such an effect in GIMP. The texture lines are more easily created with a specialized animated brush - in which the main image in each frame is a thin, irregular line - and save it to use random cells. Or you can just try to pick a tablet (of the type used to draw, not an iPad), use a simple circular brush with the basic dynamics and draw the lines just like you'd do with a real world ballpoint pen. I've got the GIMP brush and the dynamic - they are available here, along with my painting test: http://va.mu/eIYq http://va.mu/eIYw http://va.mu/eIYx (consider these resources free to use, hack and share under CC 3.0 Attribution Required) You can then fine tune a painting dynamics on GIMP to allow the angle of the stroke to vary just a little bit in each stroke -- you will paint that in a background layer, above which you should place an opaque layer, with a mask containing your target text in black (so that the text area is a 'window' to the texture layer below) That was the difficult part. But the whole thing involves a lot of steps, so let me list it more or less step by step: Create New image Type in your base text, in the font and size you will like - the distortion will come later convert your text to a mask: right click on the text layer on the layer dialog layer to image size right click again, and add layer mask: pick transfer layer alpha channel and check the invert mask option click on the main text layer thumbnail on the dialog to select it again (instead of the mask) fill it with your desired color (e.g. white) Now, selecting the background layer as your active layer, and leaving the text layer visible, start painting, with these configurations: select the above mentioned brush and painting dynamics, with the Paintbrush tool set the Angle parameter to your desired base angle (+/-15º) set the Size I found the size of +/- 70px to work fine with this brush set apply jitter, and it intensity to about 0.4 Now you have your texture - to get your distortion: create a new layer, name it distortion map rescale the layer to 6,25% (Layer-Scale Layer) apply filters-noise-Hurl, default settings are good. scale layer back to the image size (cubic transform) optional: you may want to enhance contrast on this mapping layer - I use colors-curves make the mapping layer invisible select the layer mask of the text layer filters-map-displace; pick your mapping layer as... map, I've set displacement to 7px And finally to get you the text outline: with the text layer mask selected, make a selection using the Select by Color tool create a new, transparent layer edit-stroke selection - if solid line does not look good, use a round brush with some jitter, or finetune the painting dynamics until you suit yourself. And also, does anyone know what font the word the is called? No. :-) Attachments: * http://www.gimpusers.com/system/attachments/102/original/The_Lemon_Drop_Lounge_Logo.png -- cgaik (via www.gimpusers.com/forums) ___ gimp-user-list mailing list List address:gimp-user-list@gnome.org List membership: https://mail.gnome.org/mailman/listinfo/gimp-user-list List archives: https://mail.gnome.org/archives/gimp-user-list ___ gimp-user-list mailing list List address:gimp-user-list@gnome.org List membership: https://mail.gnome.org/mailman/listinfo/gimp-user-list List archives: https://mail.gnome.org/archives/gimp-user-list You can have a look here for the font. http://forum.fanart.tv/viewtopic.php?f=19t=10 We have to search fonts out a lot for logos so I made a post a while back on font resources and even made a video on how to submit for a match. As far as new features... These first are related to the path tool , and would require tweaking it True path intersections (combine without overlaps) This could easily be scripted to transparently convert to selection, combine selections, convert back to path - would that work for you? I'm not certain I follow, but if the end result is a selection I can use that combines all the overlaps, count me in. Would this covert back to the original paths, or use the (not so accurate) selection to path algorithm? I really don't see a need to convert back to path anyway as long as the original is untouched. I just need the selection overlaps combined. Not merging the paths at intersections would also leave the door open to be able to break apart paths to layers in the future. Any implementation to select multiple path nodes. Option to merge paths to new path while leaving originals untouched. (Modifier key) So - this one is easy to implement in a python-script as well. I thought this might be easily scriptable, but I still think this should be a core function. I'd love to see this work like the add new layer modifier but would need an icon to do it. (ie. click merge paths for current functionality, shift-click merge paths to retain originals.) But I would happily settle for a plugin to do it for sure! Path transformations without having to use path to selection. What do you mean by this? Path transforms simply work; all transform tools dohave a path mode. (I've read your other e-mail expanding on some of these topics - but yet could not understand what is missing) Hmm, sorry if I wasn't clear or missing something myself. Maybe this will clear it up. https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/93550827/path%20transrmorms.ogv Notice how just transforming the path without first selecting it grabs the entire canvas and not just the path object. Rotatable guides. I've actually worked on these until a working state, several years back - but found no user support or sound use case to clean up the code enough to commit point. Do you care to expand on the use cases for them? I'm an admin over at fanart.tv. We need to recreate text and other shapes accurately to match original logos. When an original font can't be located, we need to recreate these from scratch. Recreating slanted text would be my personal #1 use case, but there are many other uses indeed. Right now I fire up inkscape when I run into these, but I'd much rather stay in gimp if I could. Sometimes I'll even create a diagonal path line and drag it around to manually match my angles so I don't have to fire up inkscape, but of course there is still no snapping. Drop layers on tab thumbs. +1 We really should get this done before 2.10 Tab ordering via Drag Drop The same Gui or folder based system to arrange scripts and plugins into the menu. Hmm...thought one - as currently the menu location for these is hardcoded in the script/plug-in source code. But a customizable menu one could drag actions too (just like assiging keyboard shortcuts), maybe is feasible. I realize these are hard coded as I have manually rewritten most of mine. I'm not sure what the easiest implementation would involve, but I was thinking the hardcoded menu statements could just be ignored in newer versions and we could use a folder structure it would read from. I realize it's not so simple as scripts and plugins co-exist but are handled differently, but doing something here to organize this huge library of addons into a user friendly structure would be pinnacle. Layer styles What would these be? A layer style is one or more effects applied to a layer or layer group. We have the layer effects plugin which is nice, but it needs expanded functionality and be built into the core. Remember all popup

Dominik Tabisz I'm not looking for complete inkscape path capabilities, but the features I'd like to see are a little more realistic I think. Gimp is awesome if you are only working with a few paths, but there are times I need to render many text letters for example. I like to do them individually so I can reuse same letters. I can end up with tons of paths. (Add path groups to my wishlist.) So when I have all my paths, I'll inevitably merge them together. Right now it'll discard your original paths and create a new one. If you find a mistake later on or just want to make some alignment changes, you have to do it all manually. So I am left having to duplicate every single path, (sometimes lots of scrolling is involved) and then merge the dupes. This really slows production. When you actually do merge paths or do a text to path with overlapping paths, the selection is in exclusion mode So you can either manually join the paths, (tedious) or never merge them and select each one individually and add to selection. (tedious and doesn't work with text to path) Maybe a merge dialog is in order. Leave originals: y/n Merge Mode: Union/Exclusion etc.. At the very least, it should default to union and not exclusion. When working with paths there needs to be a way to select multiple nodes. This has been talked about before and really should be inside gimp already and not considered a feature. Erasing nodes should not be an exercise in carpel tunnel and eye strain. Path transformations should default to only transforming the path and not the path as it relates to the canvas. Right now you have to path-to-selection first, and then you have the marching ants you have to turn off is you want a fine sight adjustment. If you need to adjust it more or differently, you have to redo path to selection again. It's just too many steps to get into a flow. Swapping the behavior to default to transforming the shape only, and select the canvas to transform the path within the canvas size seems way more intuitive. Lastly, I doubt I'll ever see rotating guides in gimp but it would be fantastic. I designed the path tool to usually stay in Design mode. Then you can use Control to temporarily switch to Edit mode. Edit-mode on-top of a path segement should show a small + at the mouse cursor, clicking will result in adding a node at this point. Control+Shift will be Edit-Mode plus subtract/remove - i.e. ctrl-shift-clicking on top of a node will remove it, ctrl-shift-clicking on a segment will open up the path by removing the segment. Yes to all above. I am very familiar with all the modifiers. If I hover my mouse above a certain segments holding Control, some segments will allow to add a node, while other segments won't. This also effects deleting line segments. Now that I think about it I have the last instance on video from a tutorial I made. I will try to capture this as well and post a screenshot or video. 3. Path strokes. Quite often on big complicated paths that I try to stroke, there will be a few sharp angles that won't protrude out to a point and will just look like it was cut off. Do you stroke with a tool? Or by stroke line? with which options? For the Mitre-Join the Mitre-Limit determines the amount of allowed protrusion. Can you provide screenshots of the problematic results? Stroke line mostly unless I'm after some sort of effect. Playing with the mitre setting does have some effect on the problem. Re: [Gimp-user] Path Tool Problems
If I hover my mouse above a certain segments holding Control, some segments will allow to add a node, while other segments won't. This also effects deleting line segments. Weird. Right? Now that I think about it I have the last instance on video from a tutorial I made. It's kinda perfect since I have it showing my key-presses as well. https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/93550827/Gimp%20Tutorial%20Series/he-is-my-master_full.mkv 6:35 to around 8:30 is the problem. I also realized that this also was a copied and pasted path. Really weird. I cannot reproduce this here though. *shrug* Where did you copy/paste the path from? Inkscape? Earlier the video you can see that I copied it from another gimp drawing. Ok, I think what you're seeing there is expected behaviour. The problem is, that when you move two tangents closely together (i.e. you have a very sharp corner) the end point of the stroke moves towards infinity, i.e. you need to cap this at some point. The parameter controlling this is the mitre limit. We use cairo for rendering and the behaviour is described as follows in the cairo documentation: If the current line join style is set to CAIRO_LINE_JOIN_MITER (see cairo_set_line_join()), the miter limit is used to determine whether the lines should be joined with a bevel instead of a miter. Cairo divides the length of the miter by the line width. If the result is greater than the miter limit, the style is converted to a bevel. [...] The default miter limit value is 10.0, which will convert joins with interior angles less than 11 degrees to bevels instead of miters. For reference, a miter limit of 2.0 makes the miter cutoff at 60 degrees, and a miter limit of 1.414 makes the cutoff at 90 degrees. A miter limit for a desired angle can be computed as: miter limit = 1/sin(angle/2) There is no way to completely disable the miter limit, but maybe the range of the limit in the UI is not sufficient. I hope this helps, Simon I will play around with the mitre limit some more and see what I can come up with. Thanks for the tips. The hot spot of the mouse cursor is dragged towards the guide (within the snapping distance) and hence the click does not happen at the anchor. Not sure if this is fixable, since placing new points along a guide is a desireable behaviour as well. Try to disable snapping. Bye, Simon That just might be possible. It never occurred to me since there is no visible snapping of the mouse. I will check that for sure the next time it happens and report back. I really hope that's it. Simon Budig wrote Akovia ( akovia1@ ) wrote: If I hover my mouse above a certain segments holding Control, some segments will allow to add a node, while other segments won't. This also effects deleting line segments. Hmm. Is this usually happening when having a huge zoom level? Not really. Like I said, sometimes I can walk the path and find where I can insert or delete as normal. I do this at the same zoom level. It's like the path got corrupted and I have to delete the corrupted part of the path and rebuild it, then everything works fine again. Simon Budig wrote There is a funky problem there: for determining the closest point along a bezier the bezier segment is approximated by line segments to a certain precision. The precision used does not take the zoom level into account. This is usually no problem, since it is 1 pixel and close enough for the usual zoom levels. However there are corner cases in huge zoom levels, where the (invisible) line approximation is off by a significant fraction of a pixel, so that the net result is an active area disconnected from the drawn bezier segment. You can verify this by searching on the inside of the curved bezier segment for an active area. I'd consider this a bug that might have been introduced when we introduced cairo-based rendering for the tool graphics (earlier the drawn path used the same line approximation as the detection code). Probably a bit tricky to fix... Bye, Simon I'm wondering if my clipboard manager isn't screwing things up. I've been having this problem since layer groups were introduced and can't seem to track down when or why it happens. I'll go to collapse or expand a layer group and nothing happens. When it happens, it affects all open tabs and not just the image I'm working on. Everything else seems to work fine, but if I do something like duplicate a layer group, it will create the new group collapsed and then I can't access it which can be a problem.
