Hi Ed. When you say navigate the search results in the App Store by headings, do you mean rotate your fingers until the roter says headings? If so, after you've set the roter to headings, how do you navigate the headings? Shawn Sent from my white Mac Book -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the VIPhone Google Group. The single-finger vertical flick navigates to the next item set via the rotor. So, if rotor is characters, vertical flick navigates one character at a time. I've been using mine since it arrived on my doorstep at 7:48 p.m. the day after launch day (after a painfully long wait), and I love it. It's spectacularly thin and light, it's beautiful - like most Apple products - and that larger display is such a welcome improvement. I chose the white and silver model - I've had white iPhones for as long as they've been available - and I think it's the prettiest gadget I've ever owned. It's also powerful, and noticeably faster than my already snappy iPhone 4S. Its battery life is excellent, and so is the camera. Overall, I have a long list of positive things to say about the iPhone 5 - the hardware is just unbeatable. But I think there's one thing letting it down, and that's iOS 6. Before I jump in and tell you why iOS 6 is letting down the iPhone 5, let me just make one thing clear: I love iOS. It's by far the most polished mobile platform there is, and it's been my OS of choice since its debut with the original iPhone. iOS just works - in so many ways. Its ability to sync with iTunes and iPhoto, and all the benefits that iCloud brings, make it a perfect companion for Mac users like me. It's super simple to use - even my granddad's using it - and the catalog of third-party apps available on iOS is second to none. But as a technology writer, I'm often required to step outside my comfort zone and test other devices. devices that don't run iOS. Since selling my iPhone 4S a couple weeks ago, I've been using a Samsung Galaxy Nexus, and prior to that I tested a long list of Android and Windows Phone smartphones. Apple's platform is the best of the bunch, but the gap between iOS and its competitors is getting ever smaller. What I've learned along the way is that Apple's platform is the best of

Hi all, I happened to reset the settings on my iPhone today and then got the strangest of popups. The message stated that a new Email address had been added to my Apple ID. The Email address bares the same alias as the one I signed up for when I created an iCloud account. That one was @me.com, and this new one is @icloud.com. I certainly never created an address @icloud.com recently and what's more, the address isn't valid--mail to it is bounced. What do you think could be going on? Re: Waking up with music - the Sonos alternative
You know I want to go check one of the Sonos systems out because I have heard so many good things about them. I know they are not cheap, but apparently the sound is as good as or better than the Bose Sound Dock or whatever they call it. If the app is fully accessible it makes it even better. On Sep 26, 2012, at 10:45 PM, Sieghard Weitzel siegh...@live.ca wrote: Hi Courtney, If you are ever in the market for a good quality boombox or multi-room audio system give Sonos a try. The Sonos app is fully accessible and you can wake up to anything you want, any song, album, a playlist you make, any of the thousands of internet radio stations like those you’d find on Ootunes or Tune In or any music subscription you may have like Spotify, Rdio, Slacker, Rhapsody etc. You can tell Sonos to start playing at whatever time you want, you can set as many alarms as you want, a different one for each day, the same for Monday to Friday etc. You can also tell the system to play for 30 minutes, 60 minutes and so on after it starts after which time it stops automatically and if you have multiple Sonos players in the house you can play only in one room or 2 or on any player in the house. The music starts out at low volume and graduately reaches the volume level you specified. The least expensive way to get into a Sonos system would be with a Play:3 player which is $299. You’d have to either have it connected to your router directly to access the internet and the music on your computer or in your iTunes library or you can buy a Zonebridge along with it for an extra $99. Then you can hook this up to your router wherever it is located in your house and you can put the Play:3 into any room as it gets the signal from the Zonebridge wirelessly. The players are, however, not working on batteries, they do have to plugged in and you can have as many as you like. The next step up would be a Play:5 for I think $399 or something like that, it’s bigger more like a traditional boombox and every bit as good sounding as a Bose Wave or whatever their boombox is called. After that you get into the Connect:Amp which is $599 and it’s just a touch bigger than an Apple TV and about twice as high but has a very similar shape and it is basically an 110 Watt Class D amplifier which would have to be hooked up to any set of bookshelf or larger speakers and it sounds extremely well depending of course how good the speakers are you connect to it. The media hates success in general. You cannot tear someone or something down unless you can find even the smallest possible thing to use as the lever to promote negativity. Media loves to show stories of how big companies such as APple is really trying to screw the llittle person. No wonder people are always looking for the negative. Of course just my opinion. Oh don't' be ridiculous! The sex of the CEO would have nothing to do with the success or perception there of. The CEO depends on those in marketing to promote the product and depends on the engineers and designers to create the wow factor. People tend to set certain expectations and if APple fails to meet those expectations, then APple is considered to no longer be innovative. Innovation is a double edged sword and APple has created a damned if you do and damned if you don't world for themselves. Do not forget that there are varying degrees of innovation as well. I think maybe this version of the iPhone was more innovative in terms of design and changes to the internal hardware. The OS brought a lot of changes, but many were not necessarily innovative or revolutionary as evolutionary. The other manufacturers are finally catching up and trying to innovate as APple has for years. THe problem is some of these competitors are bringing untried technologies to the table such as NFC which has a rather low adoption rate at this point and some real security issues that have yet to be addressed. So, neat stuff, but not ready for primetime either. Also keep in mind that APple tends to see how folks react to some of these new technologies and may not be the first to put it out there, but will ensure once they do it works better than ever. Lots of things to take into consideration, so you cannot just look at one thing and oh the sex of the CEO just is not a real factor. That is odd. When I got my 5 on launch day, I took it out of the box. I was able to use triple click home and voiceover came up with no issues at all. How odd. Will muting your phone with the switch on the left side take care of this? I know muting doesn't silence voiceover but will it keep the announcements from coming through on a call. Now however, when I do this once the call has engaged it throws the call to speaker even with my ear on the phone itself. So I press home again 3 times and it is still in speaker mode but VO turnes off. I then have to press the speaker button on my screen, which I can see as I have a little vision. Re: Using the Australian voice as default
You can get the Australian voice immediately by changing the voice in settings General International format region, but the voice will be the compact one so turning compact voice off and on will show no change in the voice you hear though it will now be Australian. Re: Earpods question
Cheryl, One would believe that the case is supposed to be kept and retained for the purpose of keeping your EarPods in good order… For me they are a blessing, although I prefer the sound on my Bose headset, having something neat and tidy to keep my earphones within, that I can keep in a pocket without getting all tangled up is wonderful. Coming to your point, I can successfully and pretty easily remove and replace my EarPods without difficulty. The key is remembering that the microphone and separate lead go through the middle on the second or so turn around the case… you have to put the lead without the microphone on it through first, and then place the microphone on top of that face up. Then continue to wrap the cable around the unit… Then gently place the lid over the top of that. Re: Triple Click VO off during a call
I've used this method of turning off vo during a call. But since upgrading to ios6 I've seen some strange behavior. Now however, when I do this once the call has engaged it throws the call to speaker even with my ear on the phone itself. So I press home again 3 times and it is still in speaker mode but VO turnes off. I then have to press the speaker button on my screen, which I can see as I have a little vision. Hey Jim, The IPhone has been digging into the Blackberry market like you wouldn't believe. Up until now, Blackberry has been holding the business market and the IPhone was seen as being for the rest of us. Of course, as a Canadian I am a little sad that Blackberry, one of our biggest companies, is losing a big part of the market. Don't be surprised that the media and other big companies, huge Blackberry users, will bash anything that disturbs their comfort zone just like we, as blind users, have been complaining about the changes in IOS 6. It is change and, no matter how good it is, it disturbs people and spills a lot of ink. Let's be positive and wait a bit and watch Apple float up to the top just as they have in the past. They have the technology, the money and the desire to do that. After all, it only makes good business sense. I think that this list is the best representative of our users and we need to be positive, continue to report bugs to a company that, up until now, has been listening to us. In business, if people expect something in September, that when they want it and business has to provide. A month before IOS 6 came out, everyone was speculating as to what would be and were really expecting IOS 6 to be out on time. Apple had to bring it out even if they knew that it wasn't polished just like automobile manufacturers will put out a car with known problems but would rather deal with a recall than to hold the production beyond the expected deadline for release. If you remember Windows 95 and all the others after, they all came out with serious bugs but they came out on time as announced and bugs were corrected after and everyone lived with that. That's the way that big business works I think we need to give Apple a couple of months to see how they deal with the after release and then I will agree or not with your statements. After all, IOS 6 is only a week old and I am positive that engineers at Apple are working around the clock to fix things that don't work and implement new ones. I'm sure Apple wants to stay on top and I'm sure they know how to do it. They just need time and that is something we, as users, are not giving them. We want better and faster than what can be done and why! Only a few short years ago, we as blind people, didn't even have access to anything else on our cell phones than dial and answer. We were complaining about things as simple as buttons being too small to dial easily and audio quality. Now we complain about how long it takes to delete a message when ,a very short while ago, we didn't even have access to that message. We even had to ask for sighted help to put contacts in our phones because we couldn't do it ourselves. That is not to say that we should stop pushing for better access and better things but we should be a little more patient as to how quickly it should come. All week, I have been following this list and read a lot more complaints about what wasn't working quite right than I read of things that are great innovations making room for more improvements. I'm sure that, within the next few weeks, a lot of small bugs that I've read about here in the past week will be corrected and we will already be wondering what IOS 7 will bring. We are just never happy with what we have. RE: Waking up with music - the Sonos alternative
Hi Scott, I can only recommend it. Only thing is that Airplay isn't natively supported by Sonos, but if you have an Airport Express you can easily Airplay enable your Sonos system by connecting your Airport Express to your Sonos player with an Ethernet cable as well as a 3.5mm male to RCA male cable (there are a few more settings involved, but it's possible and works perfectly well). Sonos is sold by some retailers and, if you decide to order from them directly they do ship for free in the States and offer I think it's a 30-day money back guaranty. I don't own a Play:3, but I do have a Play:5 which sounds great, the same goes for the Connect:Amp and the basic Connect which I think in the States is $349 is also good if you want to have Sonos available on an existing stereo or home theatre system. The Sonos app is fully accessible and you can wake up to anything you want, any song, album, a playlist you make, any of the thousands of internet radio stations like those you'd find on Ootunes or Tune In or any music subscription you may have like Spotify, Rdio, Slacker, Rhapsody etc. You'd have to either have it connected to your router directly to access the internet and the music on your computer or in your iTunes library or you can buy a Zonebridge along with it for an extra $99. Then you can hook this up to your router wherever it is located in your house and you can put the Play:3 into any room as it gets the signal from the Zonebridge wirelessly. The players are, however, not working on batteries, they do have to plugged in and you can have as many as you like. The next step up would be a Play:5 for I think $399 or something like that, it's bigger more like a traditional boombox and every bit as good sounding as a Bose Wave or whatever their boombox is called. After that you get into the Connect:Amp which is $599 and it's just a touch bigger than an Apple TV and about twice as high but has a very similar shape and it is basically an 110 Watt Class D amplifier which would have to be hooked up to any set of bookshelf or larger speakers and it sounds extremely well depending of course how good the speakers are you connect to it. Hello Shaun, yes rotate your fingers until you hear headings, then you flick one finger up to go up the headings to the top of the page, and flick one finger down to go down the page towards the bottom of the page. Any of the options in the roter are performed with either a flick up or down, I personally find the roter awesome and very useful. Re: SKYPE AND text chat
Hi Sieghard and all. How do I find the INstant messages or chat messages whil using skype on iPhone using ios 6? I can always find messages, where I get to the voice messages but not text messages. It is a bit tricky without headset because you do have to hear Voiceover to tap on the right buttons/selections and this you can only do once a call has started. Anyhow, here is how it works: 1. After you start a call double tap the second of the 5 buttons from the left. The buttons are Mute on the very left, then Earpiece/Headset, DialPad, Show Options and End Call on the very right. The second button will say Earpiece if you do not have a headset connected and it will say Headset if you do have a headset connected. 2. Once you double tap this a couple of choices pop up right above that bottom row of buttons and one of them is Speakerphone. 3. Double tap Speakerphone and the call will switch to Speakerphone. Once Speakerphone is active the button along the bottom row will now say Speakerphone as it always indicates whichever method you use for your call. If you double tap on it the options come up again above and you can select Earpiece or headset if you have one connected and switch back. If you ever make a video call the first option on the bottom left is Video, then comes Mute and then Earpiece/Headset. You can turn video on or off and select which camera you want to use in the same way as with Speakerphone. Double tap Video, options will appear above with an option to turn on video if you started as a voice call and want to start video or, if you started as a video call you can turn video off or select the backfacing camera since by default Skype uses the frontfacing camera. Every since the 4.0 update Skype continues to be fully accessible, I find it very easy and intuitive to use and it still works just as well as ever under iOS 6 although I don't think there has been an official update to support iOS 6. I think once you get the hang of how this works with these options showing up after tapping the Video or Earpiece buttons you will have no problems. If you use the DialPad keep in mind that in Skype or, for that matter, in all other Voip apps touch typing/dialing is not enabled and you have to double or split tap to dial numbers on the DialPad both the main DialPad which you use to call a number as well as the DialPad you would call up if you had to enter numbers during a call, for example, if you ended up on a system which asked you to dial an extention. As with the Phone app itself, using a headset does have a lot of advantages and does make things a bit easier. RE: SKYPE AND text chat
Hi Tara, I am not sure if I understand you correctly. If you are asking on how to start an Instant Message session with a Skype contact then just double tap on the contact and you have buttons for Video Call, Voice Call, IM, Send Photo, View Full Profile and, if they have a mobile number in their profile, SMS. If you want to review your chat history, go to the messages tab. Double tab on an entry and you see all the messages that were exchanged. I just restored my iPhone to factory settings which means I reinstalled Skype. When I opened the app for the first time after the restore Skype asked if I allow access to Contacts and also if I want my Contacts stored on the phone or the Skype servvers so they are available on all devices. I Allowed both, but I did notice that I only saw messages from since I restored it. As with the Phone app itself, using a headset does have a lot of advantages and does make things a bit easier. siri and Voice Recognition
Hi Ioana, Voice recognition as a security feature I think at this point would be premature. When you call the Aeroplan travel awards customer service line they ask you to say your Aeroplan number and whether you are the member or calling on behalf on a member and they use the responses to confirm your voice print. It usually works OK, but sometimes if you have a bad connection , lots of background noise, if you are on a Voip line or have a bad cold it does not recognize you. However, I discovered that when searching for locations in Siri, the information given was listed in kilometers. Since I prefer distances in miles, that's enough for me to switch back to United States English. I'll use the Rotor when I need to change my voice to Australian, not a big deal. As has been pointed out here, learning to use the Rotor is an extremely valuable tool. Les -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the VIPhone Google Group. Accessible Free App: Shut The Box Chrome
Here is an accessible Free App. Please read the VoiceOver notes that I have provided below. Shut The Box Chrome Developer is EasyAnt Software Solutions This is not the same one that was developed by Matt Messerman VoiceOver Notes: This app is pretty much accessible except for the numbers at the top of the screen. Once you start a game, you will be switched to landscape mode. Be sure you are holding the phone with the home button to the left. All the way across the top are the numbers 1 through 9. Your Roll Dice button is in the bottom left hand corner. Once you roll the dice, move up to where it says Dice Total and then move just a bit to the right to read what you rolled on the dice. I have written the developer and asked if he would consider labeling these buttons, but I haven't heard back from him yet. You can label these yourself if you are familiar with labeling buttons. Description: Shut The Box Chrome is a modern version of the old Shut The Box board game which is thought to have originated in Northern France. Shut The Box tests your basic math addition skills and throws in probability and luck to influence the outcome. This game is highly addictive and can be used to keep your mind sharp, with great sound effects that will keep you playing time and time again. The goal is to ensure that you close all the numbers so make sure your decisions are the right ones ... A great way to kill time while keeping that grey matter ticking over. http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/shut-the-box-chrome-edition/id498842591?mt=8 -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the VIPhone Google Group. Re: Default Voice Consideration
I don't really care about the kilometers vs miles and what Siri presents also can depend on how I phrase my question but certainly this is a consideration for some. Also, as I've stated before, the problem for me is not learning to use the rotor as I have been doing this for quite a while. my problem is that i don't like the compact Australian voice or at least the noise interference I get with it. If I only use the rotor and keep Samantha as the default voice, I can only have the compact Australian voice. For me, this is a big drawback just as occasional kilometers is for some. -- Cheryl May the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be acceptable to You, Lord, my rock and my Redeemer. Re: Battery savings
You know I just do not see any point in going through all of this. You are just going to make yourself crazy trying all of these things. If you were going to be out hiking in the wilderness and really need to conserve battery, I would say turn everything off except for the phone and maybe just turn the thing off until needed. However, there is ac power just about anywhere you are and hey you could always stand in front of a computer at a store and sneak your iPhone cable into a USB port. Point is you are only making the whole experience unpleasant turning this and that on/off just to save a couple percent on the battery scale. You of course would not harm anything turning cellular off, but honestly nor would you save anything and if you did it would be almost negligible. I think you will find several mentioned at www.applevis.com I like NoteMaster and Meteor Notes. Both have a free lite version with limited functionality, but you can see if you like the way they are laid out and spend some time figuring them out before buying the full version. Both developers are trying to be helpful with making changes to help with VoiceOver access. My top choice is NoteMaster, but others prefer Pages, Meteor Notes, and more. RE: charging the verbatim Bluetooth keyboard?
Melissa, open the keyboard and put it flat on a desk top. There are two ways to tell top from bottom. On the bottom row are two space bar keys; there are two keys instead of the traditional one long one because that's where the keyboard folds. On the left side you'll feel a vertical round kind of thing; that's where batteries are. More about those later. Towards the bottom of the keyboard, just a bit to the right of the batteries is a slide switch that clicks left and right. Sliding it to the left turns the keyboard on. Slightly above that switch is a small hole that would fit a stylus. This is the button you use for pairing. Write me off list later tonight at finleykn...@gmail.com if you need more help and I'll be home. I think I have additional info at my house. And I can help you with the keyboard. RE: Sending messages with Siri I'm having a problem
Hello Iona, Yes, I know exactly what you are talking about. I discovered it a couple of days ago. To those of you who may not know, When using Siri to send a text message, the screen locks before completing the process. It does not matter how long the auto-lock is set. NOTE 1: If the message is short enough, only one word, for instance, Siri may successfully send the text message. It may also work the first time you attempt to send a message after powering on the device. However, subsequent attempts with messages containing more than 5 words or so, will time out before the message can be sent. To create the bug, do the following: NOTE 2: I use the center button on the included iPHone wired headset to interact with Siri. 1. Launch Siri and say something like, Send a message to Mark Taylor. Siri will reply with something like, You said, send a message to Mark Taylor. OK. I can send a message to Mark Taylor for you. What would you like it to say? At this point, a text message dialog box is displayed and Siri will say something like, To, Mark Taylor. 2. Initiate the Siri command and say something like, Hi Mark. How is your day? I hope you are well. Siri will respond with something like, You said, Hi Mark. How is your day? I hope you are well. I updated your message. Ready to send it? Reply with cancel or send. NOTE 3: For me more often than not, the screen locks at this point, before I can send the message. I have also experienced the scenario when, after initiating Siri and saying, Send, Siri will respond with something like, You said Send. Okay, I will send it for you, only to lock the screen, losing the message before it can be sent. Re: Using the Australian voice as default
Everyone might want to save the below message I say this with light-hearted humor, but not all the way light-hearted. How many times does this same thing need to be explained over. I think that this topic has been beaten to death and I've seen several list posters give good and clear directions on getting either one hq voice or the other, and why you can and cannot do something in regards to which hq voice you want and yet the same questions keep popping up. I'm of course talking about the last 5 days or so. So please, if there is a subject for which you are not clear about, save the message and re-read it over and over and it will make sense. Especially if the list poster has explained it the right way. For example, like the below one. Thanks. -- Raul A. Gallegos If a parsley farmer is sued, can they garnish his wages?
