Re: [Emc-users] Touch screens

2009-06-23 Thread Greg Michalski
Steve -

Thanks for your patience with me, I saw a thread with minimal replies and
minimal progress so thought I'd jump in. I was actually experiencing some
insomnia and it appears I am again tonight...Sorry I didn't look at the
change logs and bug reports.

As for trying the newer packages for Jaunty or Karmic, you're probably Ok to
reassign the dependencies and use those packages. As always I'd recommend a
back up of critical information, but undoing the change if it doesn't work
should be rather straight forward.

Try and contact the authors/developers of the driver through those pages and
see what they have to say. My thought is even with the evolvement of the
Kernel, and the realtime kernel we use for EMC, that the HID sub-system
hasn't been overhauled so much as to break the driver migration, But, as
with anything, exercise caution.

Good luck.

Hi Greg - that's the old buggy version, last updated 2007. There have
been several versions since then, but they didn't update Hardy, only
Jaunty and Karmic. The latest fixed one is 1:1.2.1-1

Maybe anything after 1:1.2.0-3 is OK? But will those newer versions work
with Hardy?

Looking back and seeing that you originally installed the evtouch driver
I
googled that and found the Ubuntu package page on that

That's got inverted axis also - check out the bug reports on that page.

You may want to read from a link given by
apt-cache show xserver-xorg-input-evtouch
which returned
http://stz-softwaretechnik.com/~ke/touchscreen/evtouch.html

That page describes changes you should see in /etc/X11/xorg.conf after
installation. That's where changes need to be made for X-Windows
configuration.

Done all that prior to asking here :(

The changes are there, the applet isn't. I was wondering if it was some
change made by EMC install that was preventing it appearing.

Further to that, I used a different driver, used the mutouch which is
bundled with Ubuntu and managed to find and use a third party
calibration program.

Bad news, Y axis is reversed, seems a very common problem and there is a
fix with a later driver, but it seems that the old buggy driver is
bundled with EMC? The later driver has SwapX and SwapY true/false
parameters in the xorg.conf file - they have no effect on the emc
release?

Ah, but you eschewed the One True Thread angle (Whitworth 55 degrees),
rounding up to 60 degrees, which has a fractionally less optimum ratio
of self-locking to tension.

The least useful standard I have come across is UNF, which seems
designed to seize irretrievably at the first hint of corrosion. In
contrast I have dismantled bits of old commercial vehicles left in
fields for 70 years where the hexes on the (Whitworth) nuts were half
their original size, and they just unscrewed like normal (once we
found a random socket that nearly fitted)

This might be a good time to point you at my Thread identification
table which lists all the threads from all the standards I could find

the metric sizes below 3mm, and similarly many of the smaller American

 Gentlemen,
Look at this website - http://witshow.org/

Is there any interest in preparing a machine or three for this show?
There would be a need for machine preparation. There would be a
 need for booth population.
Provided there is enough interest I will provide the booth at the
show and cover show expenses. I would need volunteers to assist in the
machine prep and booth population. The booth is 10 feet X 10 feet so
it would be easy to overfill.
The MVJr would be a good candidate. It has a tool changer and could
do rigid tapping and is a recognized brand.
The Dahlih would be a good candidate. It would clean up and show
well.
I would try to have a B/P cnc to retrofit. This would show a stepper
 machine.
I could see a Max 5 axis running demos.
I could see a small gantry running demos.
I could see a small plastic framed mill running demos.
Other small machines (lathes and mills) would show well also.
A robot handing out literature would be nice.
We would have video of other machines running.
This would be fun and I believe would generate an unbelievable
amount of interest. We may even make the local TV news. :)
Primetime here we come :)
 Stuart
If there's enough interest in having EMC2 there, I'll volunteer to man the
booth. I don't have any machines small enough to carry and display, but I
can certainly be careful with someone else's if they'll loan it for the
cause.

- Steve

I have the photo boards from the NAMES show if they are desired. My mill
isn't exactly show ready/capable. Can't make a journey or I'd have been at
fest.

their board printed or something. Thank you to everyone who provided
pictures - most people I spoke to were very fond of them, and the few

without your assistance in providing pics and info.

Enjoy! And if there are any events in the future that the boards would be
useful for feel free to contact me - I have the boards still in very
reasonable shape (just some tape on edges and back, nothing critical) that
could be shipped out for a show or presentation.

[Emc-users] NAMES Show - Saturday

2009-04-18 Thread Greg Michalski
Hey everyone! Spent a bit of time in the EMC2 booth at the NAMES show
today. Dale is a wonderful guy. Very outgoing. Very knowledgeable. Very
polite. Very giving. All around a good person to have in the booth. I on
the other hand am a shy person so it took me a while to get the courage to
strike up conversation with everyone who stepped up the edge of the EMC2
area. But I tried to help as best I could. Once my medical issues got to
be too much to take without becoming a prick and alienating possible future
EMC2 users I had to leave Dale to fend for himself. Hind sight I should
have given him a chance to run and use the bathroom if needed. Then I
walked and saw a bit of the displays, I haven't really be into the steam
engines but they are pretty cool, especially the couple models of scale

All in all I had fun, only spent a total of $19 on a scrapped R8 shank 2

for precision oiling (though they came with fairly fine gauge hypodermic
needles on them.) Some decent deals to be had, some prices higher than
online, some slightly lower from the couple of online vendors (like Little
Machine Shop). I had fun and will be back tomorrow afternoon to help Dale
dismantle the booth and get the pictures back.

If someone would like to have the photo boards for the EMC Workshop out at
Stuart's in Kansas let me know and we can work it out.

Alex - contact me off list to coordinate what you want to do about posting
the photo boards on www.linuxcnc.org http://www.linuxcnc.org/ .

Be patient while these pictures load - they are good sized jpegs (be glad I
didn't use the raw files that the camera produces ;-) ) and they aren't
formatted for monitor sizes, maybe tomorrow. I need to go to bed.

Good night everyone!

Subject: NAMES Show - Saturday

Then I
walked and saw a bit of the displays, I haven't really be into the steam
engines but they are pretty cool, especially the couple models of scale
machine shops of yesteryear. Those were pretty cool.

I've got some pics here from the show showing the EMC2 booth with Dale

Jon Elson and Steve Stallings will have booths nearby.

If you're coming to the show, we're still looking for volunteers to
be at the booth. An hour, even half an hour would be helpful and
probably even fun. Send me an email.

Please if you're there and aren't running your own booth, please consider
taking a short shift at the booth (tell the wife and kids they can go to the
mall that's a 15min drive away and spend some money :--) ). As of the last
time Dale and I corresponded I was the only other worker and can really only
manage one shift a day due to my fibromyalgia.

But, it looks like we'll have a cellular internet connection there,
so another way to help would be to monitor the EMC IRC channel during
Saturday and Sunday (9-6 and 9-4)--if there are questions people have
that folks in the booth can't answer, we may try to use IRC for quick
answers. (If you'd like to volunteer your phone number as a backup,
you can email me personally.)

Many thanks to Marty (CDs), Greg (photos), Wayne (banner graphics),

No need for thanks. It's my chance to give back to the community (though
donating cash to the project would probably be better because all I'm doing
is advertising more and making more work for them...). The real thanks go
to (aside from the developers who've made this all possible) all the people
who graciously donated their pictures and machine information for use in
assembling very descriptive representations of their machines and the work
the do on them.

I know it's cheesy but I will probably bring a turner's cube (not internally
separated though) as a display piece.

Rab (Chips graphic), and Bob (who will be driving my machines down).

--Dale

Quick question Dale - Will there be a laptop or other machine available for
videos to be played back on? A number of the people who donated also sent
me video files. I can do a quick stitch of them which we could have running
in a loop at the booth. I'd offer my laptop but I can't be without it for
longer than my already volunteered shift (call me greedy/needy - but
actually I'll have some real work I need to do this weekend).

[Emc-users] NAMES Photo display update [was EMC at NAMES 2009--banner update]

2009-04-09 Thread Greg Michalski
Chris - I certainly enjoy donating my time and some resources. But thank
you for the recognition. Whether we admit it or not, and regardless of our
motives, it's human nature to enjoy and desire the recognition. :)

I'm almost done with the photo board layouts and am researching the printing
costs and alternatives - I think I have my boss coddled enough to bribe some
prints out of him limiting out-of-pocket costs to just the foam core backer
board and a fresh can of 3M Super 77 Spray Adhesive.

I will be posting these hi-res images/layouts for display and once the
location is worked out will let everyone here know so if people can't make
it to NAMES they'll be viewable. Since they are on the foam core they are
easily stored and I can make them available to any other events (shows,
workshops, etc.) in the future where people may find them useful.

I have a few layouts left to design and want to submit the layouts to the
couple of commercial entities for looking over so they are acceptable to
them - wouldn't want to have them inaccurate/junky looking and reflect
poorly on their enterprises (Jon Elson and Stuart are the couple that come
to mind - I think there were one or two others who indicated commercial use
and provided their business names). Just need a good pic of Stuart's Cinci
:) Sadly enough the board for my own machine is the one I am most behind on
- I have the #...@$ pics but have concentrated on getting everyone else's
layouts done first!

Thanks again! Hope to see at least a few mailing list names here in Toledo
4/18-19.

There are several answers to your question, but I think the best one
is you're just missing the M code to turn the spindle on at the
beginning of your program. You program something like

S1000 M3

if you want 1000 RPM.

Another answer is that this (turning off the spindle when switching
modes) is a goofy default that is now fixed in the upcoming EMC2.3.

Also - take note that the value of S is defaulted at 0 if you haven't
programmed a value to it, so both parts of S M3 are required. (Learned
that one the hard way..cussed up a storm for a while till it dawned on me
that the spindle was turning at the speed I ordered it to - zero!).

Re: [Emc-users] Spindle Turns off on starting program?

2009-04-07 Thread Greg Michalski
Can you do it in MDI mode? Switch to the MDI tab and type M3S1000. If that
works then it's definitely something that needs to be looked at code wise
(either your G or the software). Other thought - what does the spindle
button on the auto page say? Does it say clockwise or counter clockwise?
Does trying M4 in MDI or your program do anything? Any possibility that the
switch got assigned as Spindle CCW?

Hi Will -

I'm a bit tired but I recall having to try all the addresses to get my
Netmos card to work - which you've already done. Looking at my config file
I have quotes around my addresses (I have 2 ports, one an input only so that
might be why - I'd have to go back and read docs). Also the dmesg file says
something about the module parport - did you try commenting out the loadrt
prob_parport? Not sure if this is what it refers to. Sorry I can't be of
more assistance at the moment.

Subject: [Emc-users] PCI Parallel port

Hi all,

Being still new to linux and EMC2 I have decided to use an old computer to
learn
more about it, using a small table top mill that I built using various
parts. Wanting
to branch out into a cheap I/O upgrade I decided to purchase a PCI
parallel port
card. But I have run into a problem getting this going.

After installing the card, I used sudo lspci -v to find out the address,
this is what
was displayed:

[SNIP]

00:0b.0 Serial controller: Titan Electronics Inc VScom 010L 1 port
parallel adaptor
(prog-if 02 [16550])
Subsystem: Titan Electronics Inc VScom 010L 1 port parallel adaptor
Flags: medium devsel, IRQ 9
I/O ports at c400
I/O ports at c800
I/O ports at cc00
I/O ports at d000
Memory at ed001000 (32-bit, non-prefetchable)

[/SNIP

Assuming that this 00:0b.0 Serial controller: Titan Electronics Inc VScom
010L 1
port parallel adaptor was the pci card that I recently installed, I used
the address
c400 for the address in the .hal file line:

loadrt hal_parport cfg=0xc400

The .hal file that I used was created by stepconf, and functions fine with
the built in
parallel port. But when I use 0xc400 as the address I get this error on
startup of
Axis:

Debug file information:
insmod: error inserting
'/usr/realtime-2.6.24-16-rtai/modules/emc2/hal_parport.ko': -

FlatBed_Scanner_Mill_2nd_parallel_port_test.hal:27: exit value: 1
FlatBed_Scanner_Mill_2nd_parallel_port_test.hal:27: insmod failed,
returned -1
See the output of 'dmesg' for more information.
4820
 PID TTY STAT TIME COMMAND
Stopping realtime threads
Unloading hal components

And also from dmesg:

[ 336.998036] config string '0xc400'
[ 336.999790] PARPORT: ERROR: request_region(c400) failed
[ 336.999821] (make sure the kernel module 'parport' is unloaded)

I have tried the other three address's listed. They allow Axis to start
but cause no
outputs on the parallel port card.

Also, after searching the Gmane archives, I found info about Netmos cards
but nno
luck on VSCom.

I am sure that I missed some steps in the setup fo this card but am unsure
as to
what they are.
What are the steps that I missed to do and what can I do to track them
down?

Thanks,

Will Baden

Feel free to deposit movies on the FTP site also if movies are desired on

have some PVC tube around the house that I could bring down and make an

Re: [Emc-users] NAMES Backdrop Photos

2009-03-16 Thread Greg Michalski
Update from the photo front -

Ok, I have now sorted out the multitude of issues which have plagued me from
the start of this endeavor. I knew I had purchased a large mailbox amount
on my hosting package - only problem was when I set it up _I_ didn't allot
it a sufficient size, so instead of a 100MB mailbox I had a 10mb mailbox and
75MB unallocated. To top it all off I had set my client to leave copies on
the server for 5 days so once it filled Saturday into Sunday, it was tits
up.

SO - If you have tried to contact me and gotten a bounce back message or no
response whatsoever, and are still willing to provide images, go ahead and
contact me again. Everyone who has gotten a hold of me has gotten the FTP
instructions and successfully sent images, except for the most recent to be
mailed the instructions (one person). But the box was full from sometime
late Sunday (east coast time).

I apologize for the unprofessionalism this started off with. I made too
many assumptions, thereby making an @$$ out of myself when all I wanted to
do was help and use a talent and equipment at my disposal to promote EMC.
This sort of error would have been catastrophic had it been a full fledged
business (which one day I intend it to be).

So my apologies to everyone, especially those who put up with trying to get
files to me and being patient while I tried working out my bugs. I have a
decent amount of pictures, but would like at least another 5 machines to
showcase. Some of the machines received so far are very inspiring for me in
seeing the creativity not only in the work they are producing but in the
machines themselves.

So to those who haven't donated pics, or have tried and got fed up with the
hassle, I hope you will give it another shot. To those who have - thank
you. Dale is really investing a lot of his time in making the EMC presence
strong and I commend him. I wish my body could stand/sit in one place long
enough to take more shifts on the floor, this is the best way for me to
contribute, so again, one more shot and please accept my humble apologies,
this snafu was all on me.

Yours humbly in open source and open honesty,

Booth 15 at NAMES will be ours for
demonstrating/promoting/distributing EMC. This is in the back, with
Jon Elson and Steve Stallings in nearby booths to the sides.

For better or worse, the person I spoke to at NAMES felt vender
status was appropriate (due to distribution of software, even if
given out free); it sounds like something to work on changing for
next year (Ron Ginger's connections would be valuable). For this
year, consider it my donation to one of the coolest examples of open
source out there (as a recent post put it).

Please let me know if you would like to take a shift or two in the
booth; create a handout, banner, or sign; demo a system with EMC; or
have other thoughts about how to promote EMC.

Of course, many other exhibitors and venders will be running EMC
systems elsewhere. This is a chance to place the emphasis on EMC
itself.

Right now there will be at least an Emco F1 mill, and hopefully at
least one other PC running Axis for off-line demos. Steve Stallings
will loan one or two PMDX-112 boards for illustrating configuration.
There will be room for more machines, and more knowledgeable people
(in both senses).

It seems like distributing actual Live CDs would be a Good Thing--any
idea how many we could give away? Would burn-on-demand meet the
demand? Would any purpose be served making fancy CDs with printing?
Seems like folks would be fine with a CD with no printing (just
envelope printed or stamped).

NAMES is April 18-19, Toledo, OH.

--Dale

Would anyone have an objection to there being a table at NAMES to
demo/publicize EMC? (Not necessarily an official EMC thing, but
just folks who are interested in sharing.) There are at least two
vender tables left as of this morning.

--Dale
(Yes, I'm volunteering to help coordinate such a thing, if there are
no objections.)

Dale Grover wrote:
Will there be any official EMC2 presence at NAMES this year,
such as a table?

Steve Stallings of PMDX said he'd be there, and I'm also planning on
going. Tha's not very official, but may be as good as it is going to
get.

show for sure. Have to start planning, it is only 6 weeks away!

Thanks in advance for any news anyone can report,

I think it's up to us to decide. Nobody is going to be able to make a
full Workshop replacement this year because there's no longer time. I
also haven't heard any talk of anyone wanting to do it.

So I propose we narrow our goals to something EMC-specific. That's my
interest anyway.

We've had several offers of venues for an EMC meeting. I think
Stuart's is the most appealing because of interesting ongoing projects
there. So that's my preference.

Chris

I recall there being a suggestion for something in Ann Arbor due to its
proximity for Toledo and coinciding with the NAMES show. I live in the
Toledo area and certainly wouldn't mind seeing it held in this neck of the
woods. A² is only a 45 min drive from Toledo. I don't have any space to
offer (here or in A²) for a gathering (or time to commit to planning, etc.)
but would like to attend some CNC workshop/EMC fest sessions, etc. I will
be attending NAMES as well Jon.

I have a couple ideas for a workshop/fest location that I could work on
softening up for next year.

Re: [Emc-users] 10kHz Enable Signal?

2009-02-01 Thread Greg Michalski
Would the charge pump be easier and more practical to implement? I know my
charge pump card wasn't picky about the actual frequency of the signal,
anything at or above the 10Khz is sufficient. I don't know from a workload
standpoint if one method over another (Charge pump vs PWM) is less CPU
overhead or not. Just tossing the idea out there.

Hi Jeff

To get a 10kHz square wave, you need to have BASE_PERIOD 5 or
lower. Then simply set up a pwmgen.

I guessed I need some PWM stuff, but it´s not that simple to get started

2009-01-15 Thread Greg Michalski
Hi Tom - can't you remove them with a full depth finishing cut? Distinct
edges like that are stress magnets ;)

Steve Blackmore

Hi Steve,
Those are tapered walls. The contours for those pockets are about 50 thou
inset
at the bottom of the pocket, so the walls are that much thicker down
there. It
might be worth investigating using a 3/8 endmill with a 1/16 radius end.
That
would give some gradation to each Z level step, plus the bottom cut would
have
the full radiused corners.

What you need is a 5-axis mill :)

(nice stuff, by the way)
- Steve

Aside from a 5 axis (drool..), would a tapered endmill (such as used for
mold work) achieve the desired angle? Just spit-balling. Very nice work
Tom - great to see stuff like this. I better not let my brother see those -
he loves his motorcycles (as I once did, now I value my brain staying within
my skull since a friend of mine broke his pelvis in 3 places and wore a
'hoop' for nearly a year).

I saw the mention of EMC2 2.3...at the risk of getting the whole list
drooling on keyboards and causing mass crashing of emc-users list member's
computers, is 2.3 expected within the next ~3 months or so?

Again - congrats and keep machine info coming!

Re: [Emc-users] Voting time again..

2009-01-13 Thread Greg Michalski
The Board has asked Michael Cornelius to run the voting for us.
Michael is not involved in the EMC project but he is a Free Software
advocate in many ways and has graciously offered to help out
(like he did last time). The Board will provide him a list
of email addresses made from joining the lists of people receiving
the emc-users and emc-developers emails.

He will send a ballot to each person and have a special email address
set up to receive the votes. When voting closes he will report back
the names of our new Board members. When the time comes he will give
us all specific instructions about how to vote.

Alex - A simple procedural question - will voting instructions ballots be
sent through the list or is there an email address we should whitelist to
make sure they get through (don't want to inadvertently miss anything) ?
Thanks.

And good luck to all nominees - looking at the 2007 page it looks like a
good crew no matter the results. Responsible voting will definitely take
some serious deliberation so make your bio's count gents!

Subject: [Emc-users] Telnet Interface questions

Hi,
I have been working on a Ethernet based pendant/operator console for EMC
for a little while now (whenever I get a spare moment) , and have run
into a little problem. I am using the EMCRSH, Telnet interface to EMC.

My pendant was going to be quite a simple affair, but as things go, it
has grown larger that first anticipated. I now have up to 84 inputs,
being pushbuttons, rotary switches and encoders, and LED indicators for
all of these inputs. I also have a 8 digital photo frame as a monitor.
These are all controlled by a microprocessor, which is also handling the
Ethernet connection to my mini-itx EMC computer.
The problem I am having is when I get an error from EMC, I can't get the
error message back to my pendant. I have tried the Get
Operator_display, Get Operator_text and Get error commands, but none of
these are returning an error to me. I am testing this by issuing a
simple G01 command from MDI mode, this should invoke an error in regard
to having no federate. I get an error displayed on my EMC computer, but
all my status reporting to my micro are returning OK's. Is there some
other command I should be using???

Andrew

Re: [Emc-users] Bad motherboard capacitors?

2008-12-27 Thread Greg Michalski
I've repaired no less than 2 dozen MOBOs of varying brands (Soyo, MSI, Tyan,
Dell, etc.) that all were simply in need of a capacitor or 6. Never
bothered with a kit, just grabbed some from the 'Shack or the junk drawer or
tacked onto an order to Digi-Key or Mouser. Easiest way to diagnose a bad
electrolytic is a bulge on the top of the caps, or in the worst case fluid
on or around it. Most are usually in the power section (usually have a
toroid bearby) but some were in varying locations causing the odd behaviors
you mention.

Saved my tail on a MOBO based RAID situation where I'd have most likely lost
it all if I couldn't have gotten the board up again. They really aren't
hard to replace, get the same MFD value and a voltage rating equal to or
higher than the original (hopefully it didn't get too hot and melt the
wrapper) and just like any soldering on a multi-layer board that has SMT
components nearby, use the finest tip you have and medium heat for minimum
time.

If it's a dead board then the couple bucks are a no brainer. If you have a
decent multi-meter with capacitance metering, remove the suspect unit(s) and
check to see if they're ok or not. Got nothing to loose at that stage.

Good subject to bring up. Curbside finds are prominent around me because no
one wants to wait for the biannual county electronics recycling drive to
come around so they set them at the curb and usually someone like me comes
along and snags them. $5 in caps can make for a nice Christmas gift to a
digitally challenged relative :)

HTH - as always YMMV :)

Subject: [Emc-users] Bad motherboard capacitors?

Gentle persons:

In part because of the need for a parallel port and in part because of
the latency-inducing problems that seem to arise more often with recent
chipsets, we EMC'ers often seek out older motherboards/cpus.

I'm curious to know if anyone has run into the problem of bad capacitors
on their older boards, in particular, with Nichicon capacitors. (see,
for example, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Capacitor_plague or
http://news.cnet.com/PCs-plagued-by-bad-capacitors/2100-1041_3-5942647.html)

If bad caps always left the system as dead as a Norwegian Blue parrot,
then they'd be easy to diagnose. Unfortunately, it is also possible for
them to result in various headscratchingly odd behaviors in systems that
seem as if they ought to be working, which is tough to diagnose.

This problem is by no means found only with Dell Optiplex systems of a
certain age, but Dell sold or leased so many to businesses that they're
statistically the most likely brand to be bitched about.

I know several on this list have mentioned their success with Dell
Optiplex GX/SX 260/270/280 boxes coming off lease. These are great
little machines, especially the SX boxes which I personally like on
several counts, but I have found I have to be cautious buying them sight
unseen. Sometimes machines that failed in service were recapped in the
repair facility, more often the motherboard or the whole machine was
simply replaced. Good or bad, many of these boards and machines have
made their way inevitably to eBay and surplus-equipment channels.

Let the buyer beware. Ask if the seller doesn't mention that motherboard
capacitors are new, replaced, recapped, or somesuch. Refurbished may
be an insufficient description since it could just mean they erased the
disk drive and wiped the finger munge off the front panel.

Fortunately, there is at least one enterprising person on the internet
who sells capacitor sets for motherboards but you need a certain level
of skill to do the job.

Regards,
Kent

PS - if you've ever tried to bring vintage tube-type electronic gear
back to life then you already know all about the need to replace
electrolytic capacitors but you might not have expected digital
computers newer than your car to have the same problem.

My charge pump is setup to run whenever EMC is running - you may choose to
have it disable when E-Stop is activated, etc. Here's what I believe is on
my machine (too cold to go fire up and this is what I have in my archive
folder on the laptop), the charge pump board I got from CNC4PC.com needed a
quicker pulse than my servo thread IIRC so it's in the base thread, if you
can run it in the servo thread instead it would probably be better as to
real time performance, I have been known to be mistaken though :)

the pistol grip. I hammered up a couple of pieces of sheet brass, which
looks redneck primitive. The other alternative would be to somehow extract
the molded in guard from that Black Diamonds OEM plastic stock and let it
into the bottom of that stick of maple its sitting in now. This hammered
brass thingy is servicable, but has a quite low torr rating to its suction.

BTW, I cut the group size that Black Diamond is shooting by 90% with one
change. From only hitting an 8.5x11 target about half the time at 25 yards,

to a 4, 10 shot group at 50 yards. I pulled the 209 breechplug and put a
#11 nipple in. The #209 is way too much firepower, and is lifting the
bullet
free of the ramming before the powder gets lit, and that destroys the
accuracy. The #11 percussion cap is not as strong and is more accurate
because of that. Now if I could do that to my thumbhole stocked TC Omega.
I
made the breech with the #11 nipple ok, but its firing pin is so well
centered it goes .065 deep into the middle of the nipple without firing the

cap. Bummer. I need a missdrilled nipple I guess.

Now back to our regularly scheduled topic, emc. Which, BTW, I used to make
that breechplug for the T. C. Omega.

If they are equivalent (and I sure as heck didn't check that),

I didn't check for correctness either. I did notice one thing that
seems like a bad choice, but it may be intentional:

...
va2=atan(-bskew1)

va8=va7*tan(va2)
...

since tan(atan(x)) should equal x, it seems you should be able to just
use va8=-va7*bskew1.

it was intentional only in that I have variables in my macro call that
I use two different numbers
if the magnitude of the variable is less than 1 I use it as a per inch error
if the magnitude is GE 1 I use it as an angle
this necessitates the extra step for testing
when I write it for the kinematics I will only use the per inch error

it
will make little difference whether you split it up like #1 or have
huge statements like #2. The compiler will do approximately the same
work

I was in the middle of writing a similar statement, with some general
instructions on writing a test program, when I decided to just write the
test program instead :) I found that the first version runs 1,000,000
loops in about 0.5 seconds (on a 2.2 GHz Core 2 Duo), whereas the second
takes about 2 seconds. By making my own sqr function, that was cut
down to about 1.5 seconds (this surprised me because I would have
expected common subexpression elimination to work there, but I suppose
gcc can't know if any of the called math functions save some state and
may therefore return different values from call to call).

. The only concern is which one you can understand better when
you (or some other unlucky person?) come back to it later.

That is a big concern, and the code runs pretty fast anyway. Like I
said, my 2.2GHz CPU can run the slower version 500,000 to 750,000 times
a second, so even a 500 MHz CPU, that's not as well optimized for math,
should be able to do it 100,000 times a second (or about 100 times as
often as necessary)

speed was my main concern
thanks

Re: [Emc-users] Dedicated hardware for Real Time OS

2008-11-23 Thread Greg Michalski
Roberto -

There seem to be a lot of replies to your topic but it somehow diverged into a
developer conversation.

I think what would help you most is the list that is on the wiki that people
contribute latency test result numbers that are associated with their exact
setup so that you can see what to expect if you find Brand X, Model Y
motherboard with Z memory and A video, etc. It's on the emc2 wiki -
http://wiki.linuxcnc.org/cgi-bin/emcinfo.pl?Latency-Test . I think the
information you're looking for is that list as you can see what to steer clear
of and what gives really good test results.

That's the answer I'd give you - now my personal hardware situation - I am
running an old P3 650MHz Gateway motherboard with onboard video and audio and I
get a 13000 Max jitter on the fast thread which isnt wonderful, but it runs the
mill (a Grizzly X3 using steppers on Gecko drives) just fine - I get 60ipm
rapids with no issues running programs. It's a bit slow load a LARGE program
and is a little sluggish switching between workspaces (when I'm not running
code I switch and hand edit .ngc files in the 2nd workspace so EMC is still in
the 1st workspace) but other than that it is fine. I had originally planned to
use a 2.4GHz Celeron in a VIA chipset MSI board but that got 18000 jitter. My
current desktop (which is soon to be decomissioned) gets a 7000 when I run the
trial CD. That has a 2.53GHz P4 3GB DDR, onboard 10/100/1000 LAN and using a
Radeon 9600XT video card (forget the memory on the card) - once I finish all
the other original parts of my mill (limit switches, pendant, etc.) I'll
upgrade that desktop mobo into the mill since it's almost 2x as fast and
doesn't show any sluggishness, and loads the same large .ngc files rapidly
(nearly instant). I admit I haven't entered my hardware info into the wiki
list, which I should - the idea is to have as many people list what they've got
and then people starting out have an idea of what they should look for.

HTH - sorry for the long winded response.

Subject: [Emc-users] Dedicated hardware for Real Time OS

 Hi everybody,
I see that the newest hardware with frequency tuning and with many
advanced features not always give the best performances in terms of
 latency, used with an RTOS.
So now I will ask you...
Are there on the market a special hardware designed to be used in
 Real Time environment? Where?
So I think that this hardware is minimal, so I need only:
 - VGA
 - one or two PCI slot (for mesa cards)
 - Serial ports and/or parallel ports
 - One or two USB
 - LAN
And so without advanced features like bluetooth, wi-fi, HDMI, audio, etc...

 Thank you!
 Roberto

Re: [Emc-users] Pissed off snip

2008-11-16 Thread Greg Michalski
I don't normally pile one, typically I ignore the irrelevant messages. Hell, I
rarely even post unless I am fairly confident I have the answer to someone's
question. Normally I sit back, read and constantly learn from the information
shared on this mailing list - but I have had some unrealistic expectations
placed on me at work (my meat and potatoes job) recently which I stood up
against (successfully) and I want to support Stewart and Glenn as they
addressed this topic - it is an important one.

I don't know your complete situation - but I don't need to for the basic point,
but it sounds like you had work that presented itself which you decided to go
after thinking you could slap together a machine to allow you to perform the
task and make some money. While that is a commendable aspiration, with two
family members who work RD, specifically in process automation and material
handling/quality inspection disciplines, the tool to complete the task
typically goes through numerous simulations and revisions before it even sees
it's first 'trial run'. Rarely is a one-shot attempt even taken, let alone
successful unless it's the tinyest thing. Personally, my benchtop mill has
been a work in progress for close to a year now (3 years if you count time
before I spent a single penny on hardware, though medical issues have slowed my
pace significantly), granted it's a hobbyist machine, but I do have an
aspiration to turn it into a prototyping tool to allow some of the ideas
rolling around in my head to actually make it into the marketplace and make me
some profit. Money is tight and I want the best return on my investment so
planning and simulating have been mandatory to make sure I don't purchase items
that won't live up to expectations. So far everything has worked as designed
and intended, and tuning has been the only real post implementation effort
required.

To bash a product outright on the mailing list is poor form - these messages
are archived and you in turn are leaving a trail that could hurt someone else's
livelihood. I see many posts about the products offered by the manufacturer
you're bashing and they are predominantly positive or kindly asking for
assistance to implement correctly. Maybe the item in question was ready, maybe
it wasn't, but ultimately the choice was yours to use it. If you wanted a plug
and play system, it sounds like an off the shelf CNC machine would have been
the better choice for you, but then you'd have spent a lot more and your profit
margin would have been significantly lower, if even positive. To aspire to
build a machine on a short schedule and expect to immediately turn around and
use it for a production job is admirable, and occasionally even achievable, but
the blame lies ultimately with you - thorough planning and testing are not
optional, especially with machinery as dangerous as what the majority of the
list deals with. I hope that you didn't screw over a client - not only for
your sake, but for HIS, if you promised something based on a perceived ability
rather than a proven one, again, that was your error. I am sorry for your loss
of this job, but instead of venting and slingling mud, stop, take a deep
breath, and learn from what you've done. Keep at the machine and I am
confident you will have a reliable machine that will pay back your investment
in time. And since open source is a collaborative effort - if there really is
a problem/lack of function with the hardware you bought - work with the
manufacturer to help them resolve it - that's the real point I wanted to make.
No, you won't get paid for it, but they probably will thank you on the list for
the community to see for any real help you provide them and that is a really
good feeling.

This is only my 2 cents, and in the current economy, that certainly isn't worth
all that much..

To everyone else who couldn't care less - I apologize for going off topic and
addressing etiquette, it gets mentioned from time to time, but this was a
lengthy message so I apologize. Every once in a while it seems like a reminder
that friendly and positive communications are not only prefered, but certainly
more effective.

And to round out my message on a positive note - THANK YOU TO EVERY VOLUNTEER
WHO HAS DONATED TIME AND MONEY TO THE EMC2 PROJECT AND TO EVERY MANUFACTURER
WHO HAS MADE AN EFFORT TO PRODUCE HARDWARE TO WORK WITH EMC2. YOUR HARD WORK
IS NOT UNAPPRECIATED.

Hello Carl
Your math's is right (I think so)

If that math is correct then couldn't you simply use Gedit (or your favorite

subtract the variable stored for the current X or Y position from the I or J
value ? (I haven't rooted around in the variables list recently but I'm pretty
sure that the current is stored as a variable). If scripting (which is a lot
easier than you might think) isn't your thing then it might be worth a shot.
Learning a little bit of programming even at the basic levels can help out a
lot in your future exploits.

I'm tired and probably missing something but I've used the Find/Replace dialog

Re: [Emc-users] Parallel Port Breakout Board

2008-10-19 Thread Greg Michalski
snip
So there is no default usage for each of the 12 outputs and 4 inputs?

I'm thinking about a 3-axis small mill with limit switches on the two X and
Y axis plus spindle on/off and two coolants.

Outputs
3 Step and 3 Direction = 6
1 Common Enable, 2 Coolant and 1 Spindle = 4
Total 10 outputs
Inputs
2 Left Limit and 2 Right limit = 4
Total 4 inputs.

Will the .ini file allow this combination?
snip

There is a default, if you want to call it that, that the Stepconf wizard
starts with, and a couple default pinouts for off the shelf control kits, but
you can alter that to whatever suits your fancy so the combination you
mentioned (although for clarity by left/right I assume you mean +/- for the
limits on X and Y axes) would be possible. If you add a second parallel port
($5-15 PCI card) then you can get a little more advanced with its setup
defining it as dedicated to be mainly input or mainly output (mine is
configured as mainly input and IIRC it gives 12 inputs and 4 outputs -
sufficient for me to eventually implement a spindle tach and dedicated +/-
limits and homing switches along with a number of other expansion options). I
can't answer the Pico/Pluto question but I know both are decribed in good
detail in the documentation. I chose to design my own BOB as opposed to a
commercially available unit so I didn't have to abide by any set pinout or
other limitations.

I will add .02 though - your inputs don't mention anything about an E-Stop
input - I'd recommend adding that and running your limits in series if you
don't want to add a second parallel port.

HTH - I'm sure someone will expand on the Pico/Pluto but read through the docs
and you'll probably see what is going on.

I was messing with my configs, HAL and INI, and somehow I made AXIS

Other unmessed with configs will work, after the 'emc is already

well.. not sure you can do much on 6.06, might want to try a 8.04 livecd,
 maybe that gets it working..
Try the stock Ubuntu 8.04 if the emc2 one doesn't do the trick.
What I would do is get a cheapo access point, and set that up as a client,
that way you connect using a regular eth card.

My 6.06 install runs nicely on a PIII 660MHz but I had to add memory upping it
to 384mb for reasonable latency results. I've also had it running on a Pentium
(the first class...) but never actually ran it, just tested the interface and
got familiar with it.

Are you getting an error message on the crash or just lockup? Onboard or
separate video card? If you have a junk box try swapping some different
hardware into the setup. You are installing it from the LiveCD ISO from the
emc linux homepage not from a combination of Ubuntu and then compiling emc
right?

I have an old pentium II 333Mhz 192M ram with Mepis lite installed on it I
have tried to install ubuntu 6.06 with

My questions are can I use Mepis lite to run a version of emc2?, is there a
version of emc2 that will run on an older PC,
 can emc2 run stand alone?

read a lot more of the docs, got active on the list and investigated the
examples included. I don't have much time right now, or the clarity of thought
to rehash what I ended up learning, but my intent was to look for a way to run
a macro and there is an example included in the EMC2 stuff that shows how to
use the probe command with variable and touch the Z off to a machine point
thereby setting the Z for the new tool. It has been discussed on the list
since then and a link posted -

That was posted back in August and basically does what I was looking for in
automating the Z length at a tool change with a simple insulated pad mounted to
a fixed position on the table and connected to the probe input (basically a
piece of single sided PC board bolted to the T slots at a spot I don't really
use commonly but is available to the spindle centerline - single sided PCB
material keeps it insulated from the table so the tool touching can complete
the probe circuit). By moving in the machine coordinate system (as opposed to
an offset coordinate system) the position is easily repeated, the Z zero of the
new tool calculated, and that dimension applied to the Z value converting it to
the new Z for the newly inserted tool, obviously you need to run it at the
start so the original tool length is saved as the initial reference to
correctly calculate everything from there on.

I haven't actually used it yet (been laid up with some medical issues and the
last thing I have had time to do is work on my hobbyist mill). Others may have
additional requirements they are looking for but I really should have gone back
and canceled that request as this method solves the problem for me. It may not
be as nifty as a GUI button to do it as a Macro but you can easily set the
code as a O code that you call when you run a tool change. Not hard to insert
that into a .ngc file and then search for each M6 and add the O call
immediately following that before starting any more operations.

My .02 HTH YMMV :)

No, at least Axis will hold the currently executing line on the screen so
you can remember the line number when you pause. After changing the tool and
resetting the length, you highlight that line and click on start from line in
the machine menu (I think), and then hit R for run. It will restart at that
line.

Yea - you need to pause, then note line, then stop, then jog, then set
next line, then run. Can't jog until you stop.

Re: [Emc-users] Spindle Speed

2008-09-14 Thread Greg Michalski
Good luck tomorrow - my 2 cents if it helps -

2) Remember the home value is signed (+/-) so change the value to search for
home in the other direction.

3) A joint is an axis - joint 0 is the first one defined in the ini file, etc.
so if homing failed on joint 1, then it failed on the second joint identified
in your .ini file. As to why it fails when it hits the switch, open up the
halscope and make sure your looking for the right value on the switch first and
going in the right direction. Are you sharing the home switch as a limit and
if so is EMC aware of that (IIRC HomeIsShared = 1 or something like that -
check the docs)

Many thanks to all who helped me both on here and on IRC tonight.

I now have the spindle speed reported correctly in my widgets!
I can control the spindle from standstill to max speed using the manual
page, although it is a bit laborious!

 Jobs for tomorrow...

 1) Work out how to tell EMC to run the spindle at X speed when I do an S
 command... e.g. S500 = 500 rpm.

2)Try and get the homing of the axis working properly, it currently homes in
the wrong direction on X (My lathe is a slant-bed)

3)Work out why a home command fails on a joint during the homing command
when it hits the switch. (probably need to work out what a joint is first!)

Re: [Emc-users] R: New user new problem

2008-08-13 Thread Greg Michalski
Thats where I saw it! Sure it's not a fancy automated function implemented as
a feature in EMC but the variables are there to make it possible. Thanks for
the link Chris - my machine is covered with some tarps right now and the dual
boot system is in Billy Goat mode crunching away at video
recording/compression/burn cycle so it would have taken some time for me to
find it in the samples.

Snoopy - I hope that helps and makes sense to you - all it is doing is taking
the value that is probed at the start (and each successive time) and using that
as an add/subtract to calculate the new offset to find the new Z zero and allow
you to move onto the next cutting operation with the correct tool length set.
Read the documentation about variables and I think you'll understand what his
code is doing. You'd need to insert that manually into any G-code you generate
(I believe Cambam (what I use) lets you add G code routines into the MOP tree
so saving the code for insertion whenever you start a new operation with a
different tool should be fairly easy - otherwise there's always the text
editors (see the other threads that have sprung up recently about those...)).

Re: [Emc-users] New user new problem

2008-08-12 Thread Greg Michalski
Well lets see here - are you talking about an automated Z touch off plate with
a script/macro of some kind that moves the tool to a certain machine coordinate
and touches a plate, triggering the probe circuit and identifying the new Z
offset value to use then returns to machining after finishing a manual tool
change? Or are you looking to adjust the tool table file and use that with a
rigid holder system that maintains a repeatable Z? Some details of your
machine would be helpful - ie: R8 collets, Morse Taper collets, CATxx or NMTBxx
holders, etc.

I know I have seen something of the Z touch off plate and a set of G-code
commands that would be a starting point of a script/macro to set the Z offset
but I'd need to do a bit of searching as I saw that well before I had my
machine up and running and I haven't finished the basic stuff I want let alone
gotten into more automation. It's still off in the horizon for me. Hopefully
someone else can lend some more help.

Don't mean to turn your how-to into an Ubuntu guide but reading the fine
manual
is a basic thing many users skip over.

I agree - and then they blame the software - thus is the point of the tutorial
- a hopefully knock on wood, cross my fingers, nearly foolproof way to get them
started so they see what they were missing and increase the number of converts
(insert sinister Mr. Burns finger motion here).

I'll add a comment about reading the help files - Hardy is 8.04 right? I'll
locate the 6.06 version help files link off my install(s) for people to have
that info handy. It'll be a simple addition. Thanks for the suggestion. PPoE
was one of the complaints I had when they started DSL - now the modems they are
replacing the worn out ones with (well at SBC at least - my office has a DSL
connection) has the PPoE setup built in so it acts just like a cable modem or
router. I won't digress into all my other issues between the two. :) I know
for some (like my office it's either the best choice, only choice or only cost
effective choice (the office got a 53k quote to extend lines to the building +
business rates of 75% over for the same service I get at home - and still a
dynamic IP not static).

Thanks for the feedback - the PDF version is looking rather nice right now.

One thing worth mentioning to people unfamilar with Ubuntu is the help files
are
a must read. On Hardy these are accessed by clicking the question mark on the
top bar. For example it explains how to enable a ADSL pppoe connection. The
network assistant is next to useless for this type of connection which might
 confuse some users.

Re: [Emc-users] EMC Basic Setup Tutorial - draft

2008-08-03 Thread Greg Michalski
Thanks for all the comments - I'll try and incorporate as much of this as
possible - I'll think I'll make a separate PDF link for someone to download and
print off to combat the black background issue - IE7 always inverts the page
for me but I have a BW printer at home so maybe it's the printer being self
aware and cutting down on toner usage. In reality these steps are mostly
covered in print form in the current users manual - though I'm sure a noobie
wouldn't dig through the manual to find those pages and print them off.
Personally I have a binder for each of the manuals and was grabbing them from
time to time when I was setting up the actual mill.

I understand on the going off topic - I'm kinda medicated and my thought
processes are not as focused as normal. With a new day a new read through will
probably reveal more issues to me that I don't like :) Thanks for pointing
that out so I can be aware to keep focus.

Thanks again everyone!

Well done! I don't have much to add that hasn't been covered but,
when CoffeCup expires, give SeaMonkey a try. I use it for my QD web stuff.
Available for Win, Lin Mac and can be configured to always come up

 And it's free at http://www.seamonkey-project.org/

Also search for 'loos' and change to 'los' where appropriate. (As in steps ;^)

The black background was mentioned. I like it and have no problems printing
anything with any background. It would be simple to copy paste everything
into OO's word processor and export as pdf and put up a link to the pdf.

 Keep up the good work,

Re: [Emc-users] EMC Basic Setup Tutorial - draft

2008-08-03 Thread Greg Michalski
Thank you Steve! Thats more like it! I feel at home now - peace and bliss,
the universe is in harmony...wait a second - now this feels like work...my
doctor would not approve... :) (Don't worry - he's more worried about the
documented rise in my blood pressure when dealing with my boss and I need to
keep my BP down this week so the procedure they performed can take hold - this
is enjoyable to me an he said to keep my mind stimulated so the blood flow was
normal).

a.. I'll adjust the colors - not much web design experience I confess - I'll
try some different combos to find one that is easier for all to read - that
magenta is dark ain't it...
b.. You are correct, the current version of EMC2 is 2.2.5 but the current
Live CD ISO is 2.2.2 - I'll make that distinction a little clearer.
c.. I'll recommend being connected because I think you are right - if I
recall when I first installed 2.2.1 (or maybe when I blew away 2.2.1 because it
didn't have stepconf included and installed 2.2.2) without the internet it did
link to the 2.1 repository not the 2.2 so it didn't see the updates when I
connected - thankfully I was savvy enough to find the repository link
definitions - not sure if that got changed with 2.2 but better safe than sorry
- as easy as I can make it for new hesitant people the better.
d.. Invert comment - will do that hadn't occurred to me. As mentioned in
previous posts my mill is converted and running and this tutorial is kind of
something to keep me busy while laid up on doctors orders so some things that I
learned/just knew slipped my mind as I did a dualboot on my desktop and lie in
bed writing this up on the laptop - irony is I hardly ever use the desktop
anymore and the latency results of my desktop are much better than what is in
the garage right now...I smell a swap coming...
e.. Units dependent on previous selection - easy enough.
f.. Good point on soft limits - I should have known better - I don't have my
switches installed on my mill yet - if I was allowed to run around I'd be
working on that so my soft limits are disabled because in early stages I lost
steps and the machine thinks it is somewhere way off in the weeds when really
it's dead center so as a workaround till I get the limits on I did that as
opposed to diabling the limits completely (right now they are just inverted so
that when I install them I only need to uninvert and no extra setup is needed).
g.. Ah that's right - I forgot that is a signed number will note that.
h.. I had a feeling there was something wrong on the homing - it was getting
late when I wrote that and I didn't grab the manual to get it right. Will
correct.
i.. Thats right - only one realtime unit at a time - good warning for folks
(and fyi IIRC it just locks things up or causes an error saying hal had a
problem and then I think I needed to reboot to get EMC2 to start again - I
admit I read most of the manuals but not everything - luckily that was on the
bench before it ever saw a connection to the machine but I'd hate for a noobie
to damage something or hisself and blame me/EMC)
j.. Join the club - I don't understand where the parameters come from but I
understand what they are looking to do. Maybe I'll just tailor it for what I
would do on my machine - that way it's correct for mine when I get around top a
PWM spindle control. The text is almost copy and past from section 4.3 of the
manual Determining Spindle Calibration - maybe someone can enlighten me on
PDM so I can address that also.

Thanks Steve - thats a nice comprehensive list from which I learned, everyone
on this list probably learned, and many noobies (I hope) will learn from. I'm
finding spelling errors that CoffeeCup missed and some grammar errors - I'm not
as concerned with grammar as spelling - when I make the PDF version I'll let
InDesign do a spellcheck and make those corrections back in the the .html
files. Coffee Cup took nearly a minute to replace a word - something didn't
make sense there. So for now I'll pass on that check :) I'll add your and
other's corrections into the sections and then proceed with making the
individual pages as suggested for ease of use.

 halcmd loadusr io -ini $INIFILE
 Let's say that infile is /bad idea.ini. /bad idea.ini goes to the
'halcmd' program as a single positional argument, but halcmd then does a
round of parsing and turns it into two arguments: /bad and idea.ini.
The change causes halcmd not do to this parsing, and thus avoid
 splitting the word again.

However, this can affect valid halcmd invocations, because before this
 change you could write
 halcmd loadusr and2 count=1
 or
 halcmd loadusr and2 count=1
in a shell script and get the same result. After my change, the first
command will be an error because loadusr and2 count=1 (the whole thing
taken as one argument) doesn't name a valid command.

[Emc-users] EMC Basic Setup Tutorial - draft

2008-08-02 Thread Greg Michalski
If anyone would like to review and critique this Stepconf tutorial webpage
before it goes live I'd love to have some input from those more knowledgeable
and experienced than I. Be brutal - I can take it. (Unless it's layout related
- I'm still inept at web design - free 30 day trial of Coffee Cup's WYSIWYG app
is enough glitz for me at the moment. It's simple and cheap enough that I can
run the 30 days and then purchas a copy of it).

Re: [Emc-users] Bouncing email

2008-07-30 Thread Greg Michalski
I simply setup a Postmaster account on my Go-Daddy hosted site - and the
emails started showing on the listserv again. Definitely something has changed
since I first set up my identity here and had sent a number of posts to the
group and then got slapped with that suddenly. If you're on one of the really
simple hosting plans where you don't have 100 email accounts then yeah - you're
screwed but if you have multiple accounts just setup one named postmaster and
have it forward to your primary account.

Good luck.

550-Response: 553 sorry, mail to that recipient is not accepted (#5.7.1)
550-Several RFCs state that you are required to have a postmaster 550-mailbox

My domain, email, etc. is all handled by GoDaddy, so I don't think I have the

nearly as convenient. Is there a work around, other than what I have already
done or anything else that can be done?

[Emc-users] Sieg X3 Conversion with EMC control

2008-07-28 Thread Greg Michalski
If anyone would like to take a look at the print set I put together for my Sieg
(Grizzly G0463) X3 mill CNC conversion and critique it I'd be EXTREMELY
appreciative - I'm not schooled in mechanical drawing (I work for a dreaded
architect...) so anything that doesn't make sense being pointed out would be
very helpful. I borrowed Solid Works licenses from my brother's company and
taught myself to model the parts in there as opposed to solids in Autocad which
made it much easier and then used the standard tools to label and dimension,
etc.

I can take HARSH criticism so flame away! These documents are 100% public
domain - everything I learned to design the conversion was garnered from
information shared here, on CNCzone.com and elsewhere so this is my attempt to
give back to the community - and on a mailing list for a GPL software package
seems the optimal place to ask for some input - also is there is somebody who
is familiar with the details of GNU GPL let me know if referencing the intent
on these documents as I did is appropriate or not. I was in a rush to get
these out to the community by my promised end of July deadline and license was
the least important thing so I kind of winged it.

Come to think of it - I forgot to plug EMC2 in the introduction section - guess
I can start revision 2...

Thanks again.

Fix the latency first. You may end up changing building blocks that have a
domino effect on other items (parallel port addresses, etc.)

Hi Jack.

What version of emc2 are you using? There was some quirks with stepconf on
earlier versions-make sure you have the latest version.
The latency test is not really to see how slow/fast your computer is, it is
to see how late it is on scheduled tasks.
Sounds like your computer can be really late. You need to fix this before
doing any serious work as it could cause missed steps which will ruin your
work.

 Suggestions?

I figure this is probably something dumb I am doing, and I am willing to
RTFM, I just need some direction.

You might try the pitch change to your working sample file. Just edit
the SCALE = XX to match your lead pitch and motor/screw ratio. This
will change the step rate requirement for a given axis rate, so you
might reach your stepping rate limit earlier or later.

Compare the working and stepconfig file differences and add each change
to the working file until it doesn't work, then research the last
feature you changed.

With the sample config, it is jogging back and forth OK, but it is not
set
for the right threads per inch for the lead screws.

You may be stalling your steppers because the stepping rate may have
changed. You may need to find the max stepping rate (not axis feed
rate), then tune different settings to to maximize it. Once you find the
maximum rate, adjust your maximum axis feed rates to stay below the
stepping maximums minus a safety factor.

Once I get this working, next comes home and limit switches and a
hardware
 emergency switch.

The latency test runs, but if I do try to use the computer, sometimes
the
numbers go out of sight. 'Normally' it runs about 15000. When it goes
'crazy' It
reads over a million. My 500MHz celeron may be to slow, but it is what I
am
 playing with for now.

 Thanks. ... Jack

In my opinion, you need to fix the latency test problems first, so that
you have a stable system that will give you more consistent behavior.
Check items 2 and 5 here:

and:

http://wiki.linuxcnc.org/cgi-bin/emcinfo.pl?TweakingSoftwareStepGeneration
http://wiki.linuxcnc.org/cgi-bin/emcinfo.pl?Stepper_Drive_Timing

Another issue that may come up with larger machines, with fine pitch
screws, high (low?) motor/screw gearing or high feed rates, which
translate to higher step rates. The PC parallel port tends to be too
slow. You may need to consider going to a hardware step generator like
the Pluto-P, Pico UPC, or others.

Re: [Emc-users] E-stop Surprise

2008-06-14 Thread Greg Michalski
Wow - I guess I should be proud of myself that I had a physical estop button
and a machine kill switch designed in while things were still on the bench!

Ok, enough bragging - get your physical estop button - that button, even one
of the high dollar ones, is worth its weight in gold compared to the damage
it can do to the machine (or you) if things go awry. I wonder - did your
program actually specify a new tool (ie m6 t02) or just an m6 with you
knowing what tool it needed next. My mill stops on the M6 T2 that was
generated by CamBam and waits (typically I'd been handcoding and doing
separate programs for each tool since I don't have an automated touch off
concept in place yet). I'm not sure what the manual says about the M6
command but maybe somewhere in the code the toolchanger portion realizes the
tool is the same as that currently specifiec and lets the program run on,
though still pops up the window for the toolchange.

I'm still spoiled by the keyboard - I hit escape (and usually tap it
multiple times as I'm used to being deep in autocad levels of commands that
I wanted to end) and if necessary F1 more often than I use the mouse, when I
complete my operator's station I'm going to need to add another E-Stop
switch in the loop as I won't be within rapid reach of the one on the
controller anymore. My thought is you should have a mechanical estop in the
loop anywhere you might possibly be while the program is running
(ie:console, enclosure, spindle) so that you can always stop it. You just
have to train yourself to use them.

Hope you learned your lesson and we figure why that happened and get
anything that needs to be corrected taken care of. Maybe all the OK's
should be on a common message center with an Ok and the background of that
changes color when a new message is displayed and then goes to a standard
background when everything is cleared. Just a thought, but I also think an
M6 should stop regardless of what tool is in and what tool is scheduled.
The interface has no way of knowing definitively that something wasn't
changed.

There's my .02x10^-23 - YMMV.

nothing was damaged. I still belive it is a bad practice to use popups and

wonder if there should be a way to have the AXIS e-stop always on top

I wasn't trying to imply that the escape key should be someone's trusted way
out, or that it's ok the button on screen didn't work. I was actually implying
that it was still a bad habit of mine, as would be the button on the interface.
I'm training myself to hit the estop(s) (meaing the physical ones) but old
habits die hard - I'm still working on it.

I agree the one one screen should always work, but the computer controller
going bonkers is always a possibility therefore we should all - regardless of
machine size or experience - have physical estops and train ourselves, and in
the case of shops - the operators - to rely on them and not on the computer.

I don't think I want to meet the designer of, or the machinist willing to wear
your always active estop circuit :)

Sorry if I ruffled feathers - wasn't my intent.

There in lies the problem you assume other people have the same experience,
knowledge and skills as you. You miss the point entirely... If the E-Stop
button is on the screen and I'm trying to press it with the mouse and it won't
do anything I have lost precious seconds of time getting that experience. It
doesn't matter if I have 27 e-stop buttons all over the place if I have the
mouse in my hand my instinct is to use it first in an emergency just because it
is the the closest thing to my finger. IMHO it is a mistake to have an e-stop
where ever it is that only functions some of the time.

I think that tension sensors should be mandatory in the rear of machinest
pants and directly coupled to the always active e-stop circuit. When the
clench comes the machine stops...

Re: [Emc-users] Installing a second parallel port

2008-06-12 Thread Greg Michalski
This is where Stepconf can help the someone less versed in the config files
though - you can make multiple machine setups and then go through the .hal
and .ini files and marry the two together to get the results you want
without really having to know the details of the hal and ini files.

I created my benchtop mill setup with stepconf on the motherboard parport,
then when I wanted to add a second port I made another mill configuration
that only had the items I wanted (the limits and other sensors, a few output
controls) and then just took those pin assignments and changed the parport.0
to parport.1 and pasted into my benchtop config file - saved a lot of time
and guessing. The hardest part was getting the addresses correct for two
ports - I think for my card I have 3 addresses loaded but it only creates 2
ports - I forget where I got that hint from but the card needed 2 addresses
to fully address everything. When I go home tonight maybe I can remember to
offload a copy of my config file and post the header to give you some help.

Greg Michalski
www.distinctperspectives.com

Kirk
I have added..
loadrt hal_parport cfg=0x9000
addf parport.0.read servo-thread
addf parport.0.write servo-thread
to my hal file (hopefully in the right places). Can I not configure the
pins through the step config wizard?

No, you can't use stepconf to configure this. Stepconf is intended to
make it easy to set up simple machines, or to provide a starting point
for more complex machines.

That's what I was expecting just the touch off took longer than the original
parse so I was confused. Reading what you wrote helps me understand (it
would have taken me weeks to understand the source code for that) and I am
using variables though none that are system set, I set them all in the gcode
file myself and manipulate with basic math. Still I now understand it has
to resort all that math based on the new position.

Your suggestion of a simple part is my future plan of attack. For the time
being this was the most complex .ngc I'll be running for some time. I hope
to get to small production runs but only time and idea generation will tell.

Thanks!

plot after touching off is not as simple as moving the old preview plot
to a new location, because gcode can do things like switch coordinate
systems during a part program (e.g., issue G55 and switch to a system
not affected by the Touch Off just performed for the G54 coordinate
system) or even perform O- IF statements based on the interpreter
variable that holds the G54 coordinate offset.

One trick you might employ is to load a very simple gcode file, touch
off, then load the real part program once you think your offsets are
right.

Re: [Emc-users] My Mill on EMC2

2008-06-09 Thread Greg Michalski
I'll try backing off the BASE_PERIOD setting.

It's not on a network yet (need to run CAT5 to the garage still) but does
have a D-Link network card in it.

Thanks for the suggestion.

Greg

I wonder if just backing off on the BASE_PERIOD setting would
help. The real time section with software step generation may
be taking a little too much CPU time.

One other thing, do you have it on a network? Something I've
noticed on one system where I share the network jack is that any
user interface stuff will run insanely slow for 10-15 minutes
after you boot. I forget which network process is burning all
the CPU time trying to establish some connection.

[Emc-users] My Mill on EMC2

2008-06-08 Thread Greg Michalski
Just thought I'd share my benchtop mill powered by EMC.

http://distinctperspectives.com/coppermine/

It's a work in progress but I've got 3 axes operational - still some
electronics to work on and a few goodies to machine for the mill and then
it'll be 100%.

A question though - when I have the file loaded and touch off to the
workpiece - it takes FOREVER to get back to ready to let me touch off the
next axis. What is this the result of? The .ngc file is
www.distinctperspectives.com/X3/LimitBases.ngc I know it is a lot of milling
(it took a while to run) but it took longer to update after touching off
than it did to parse the file at loadup. I know I'm not running a top end
system (it's a P3 650MHz w/384mb memory and onboard video that I picked off
the curb one winter afternoon) but it had better latency test results
(18000) than the newer MSI mobo with a Celeron and a gig and an ATI video
card (I know the Celeron isn't the best for this kind of application but
it's what I had to toss into the board which I got for a whopping $5 at a
Hamfest because it had 2 bent pins on the BGA socket). Anything I'm doing
wrong or is it just the limitations of the memory and processor speed?

Thanks.

Re: [Emc-users] My Mill on EMC2

2008-06-08 Thread Greg Michalski
Silly thing was that the couple PCI video cards I had laying around didn't
work under X AND they increased the latency test results. Maybe I'll grab a
few different cards. One I tried was an S3 Virge and the other an old ATI.
There is no means in the bios for disabling the onboard video completely so
when I install from the .iso it defaults to the onboard video and doesn't
initialize the additional card and I gave up trying to get either one to
work because I couldn't get X conigured to work correctly.

But thanks for the suggestion. I'm contemplating a mobo upgrade to one of
the top performers on the wiki once I get CAT5 out to the garage. I may
also be moving this year (I live with my brother and am starting to look at
getting my own house, albeit smaller, but hopefully with a detached garage
so I can let things hum away whilst I sleep) so I'm dragging my feet on
that. I'll find out Tuesday what the banks have to say...

It does run, and didn't miss a beat while running the program, just
wondering what goes on inside those little transistors when you set a
workpiece offset. Thanks for the response Dave. Every bit of input helps.
:)

Greg

Chances are that dumping the on-board video for a card will change
things.
I'm running an Intel 'Seattle' 600 MHz P3 with a video card and 384
Mb of memory and getting fine response.

Re: [Emc-users] Parallel port PCI card

2008-06-06 Thread Greg Michalski
I picked up a cheap ($10) unit from the local computer store - I think they
have dual port cards and I can already see I'm going to be adding more
signals than my PCI slots will allow with single port cards so I'll probably
go back. Just about any card should work - the wiki explains finding the
address (lspci -v) of the card to use with your setup files just picking
which addresses are required to input for the card are kind of confusing (I
had to input 2 of the 3 addresses it spat out with the above command). It
might take a little experimenting but with halscope it's not hard to check
the whole port.

I like Alex's implementation - I'll leave it as the default on my primary
setup myself as I do prefer it to shutoff between changes most times.

But if I'm doing some simple jogging and need the spindle and some larger
exact moves I'd have a separate configuration I'd run for that.

Thanks for the quick action on that.

Hi Stuart,

this wasn't an AXIS limitation. but rather an emc/emc2 design.
I added an ini variable [EMCIO] SPINDLE_MODE

If you set SPINDLE_MODE to 1 it will cause the spindle to keep running
when changing modes, but also on abort (hitting escape).
The spindle stops if you hit ESTOP.

The default value for SPINDLE_MODE is 0, which causes the previous
behaviour.

This is available in TRUNK, and will be part of 2.3.x (if it's not
disputed/reverted by then ;)

Alex

I second that - and with the other comments popping up the motion is all but
passed. I don't have a thing in the world against you Paul - I don't know
you - I am sure you are a great guy with a lot to offer and some legitimate
complaints and solutions. I understand there are behind the scenes issues
and whatnot, but -

I (as did many others) signed up for THIS list for the insight into the use,
implementation and adaptation of EMC along with application ideas and
machining concepts and other items of concern to the average user - not the
majority of what has been piling up in my Outlook EMC sort folder over the
past week. (Yes, I'm primarily a Windoze baby but can find my way around
*nix well enough to have my home network server [and hopefully before too
long my boss will see the light and I'll have the office on one too] on a
slightly dated Debian install).

I immensely respect ANYONE who does now, has ever, or will ever contribute
to the EMC project or any branch thereof. Everyone deserves much MUCH
credit - I did a bit of C programming when I was younger (back in the mid
80's) and recently did a few projects on some PICs from scratch but nothing
tantamount to the vastness of EMC and a realtime OS patch, while still
giving those amongst us who can understand most of what happens in command
space but prefer the ease of point and click that interface. It's an
immense undertaking and I commend everyone. I bet M)(*^soft has a hell of a
lot more compile time errors on for profit releases that are saved for
later than you bring up Paul, but this isn't the place to bring them up -
unless the developers list is a permission based list and they won't let you
on. Then I could understand a few emails a week to flag someone down.
You've got their attention and most of them seem responsive. But now I've
added to the growing number of unwanted emails piling up - and I'm just a
nobody in suburban Ohio who simply wants to configure his mill the way he
wants with the features he'll gets the most effectiveness from and needs a
little nudge in the right direction every now and then - and I learn a lot
on this list, and get some inspiration. I don't contribute to the list
much, but I'm learning and hope to be a guiding hand some day.

With all that said can we please try and minimize all the back and forth
banter on this list? The thread to try and solve your CVS access is ok by
me (though I'd rename the topic so it doesn't carry on the legacy of this
one) - it's ongoing and that seems to be pretty calm and collected - and
brings knowledge to the list so I don't have a problem with that. But if
the other stuff doesn't slow down or halt I'm going to have to unsubscribe
because it's just too much to filter it all to get at the stuff I came here
for.

There - I've said my piece (much longer than I intended -sorry bout that) -
now back to my Memorial Day Weekend activities.

Since you haven't addressed John's question about whether in view or

appear because you clicked the include custom PyVCP button in stepconf you
won't - it simply includes a blank file that is already tied into the GUI
for you to add you custom PyVCP xml code to. That might be something to add
to the Stepconf interface to assist the noob's understand what it is really
doing. I will admit, I was expecting some blank panel to appear when I

And cool response on the bicycles! Do try and post some pics of your future

I don't know about anyone else, but I would love (read: possibly even pay

I guess what I'm getting at is that it wouldn't necessarily have to be
professionally edited to be valuable- so I hope somebody with a decent

Re: [Emc-users] Watchdogs

2008-04-28 Thread Greg Michalski
Here is what I breadboarded that seems to work.
http://www.wallacecompany.com/machine_shop/Shizuoka/watchdog-1b.png

That looks nice and simple. If I have troubles with what I've got on hand
(the CNC4PC charge pump board) I might try your circuit out. (So if you
improve it please feel free to post :) ) Are you running that directly off
a parallel port pin or is it buffered/opto-isolated?

Regarding the frequency - yes, the period depends on the thread speed.
It toggles the output each time it runs, so a 1KHz run rate = 500Hz out.

So in order to get my CNC4PC charge pump board to work correctly (it relies
on a 12.5kHz constant signal) I am going to need to create it's own thread
in addition to the servo thread and the base thread? I am thinking this is
possible to do, are there any negatives to creating a third thread?

I'm still assembling my control enclosure so I can't fire things up to
experiment, the backplane isn't quite ready to mount the MOBO yet as I'm
still drilling tapping to mount some parts. Would help if my ebay score of
contactors showed up...I'd get more motivation to get it done.

[Emc-users] EMC2 Charge Pump

2008-04-11 Thread Greg Michalski
The manual(s) seem to be lacking on charge pump operation and this being my
first foray into the world of CNC I have a couple questions:

1. Does the charge pump run non stop from the time you open EMC till you
close it (or it crashes) or does it stop on E-Stop condition?

2. To add it to my setup do I need to add anything other than the following
4 lines to my machines .hal file:

loadrt charge_pump
net charge-pump = charge.pump-out
addf charge-pump base-thread
net charge-pump = parport.0.pin-xx-out

My intention is to have the charge pump wait for EMC to be running then
close a contactor supplying the stepper powersupply and the mill control
circuitry. That allows me a single power button (the CPU) as opposed to 2 or
3 and guarantees that only when EMC is control can anything happen and no
sequencing issues (do this then that, then this - ie human error). I may
even add a relay to drop the panel power switch out once the charge pump
engages so that I can't accidentally bump it and upset the OS at all. But I
don't want the mill and power supply to be shutdown completely with the
activation of an E-Stop or Machine Power Off. I only want E-stop to
disable the amplifier enable and the spindle enable, not drop the charge
pump too. So in short - I want the Charge Pump running the moment EMC2
successfully loads, till the moment it closes (purposefully or otherwise).

Am I correct or am I a resident of left field? I am designing my enclosure
right now and don't have a spare mobo available to temporarily fire up EMC2
and see what happens until I finish the enclosure setup, which will kind of
be determined by the functionality of the charge pump...catch 22 anyone?

The Charge Pump component from the CVS repository (GNU GPL truncated for
space) is:

// This is a 'charge-pump' component for EMC2 HAL
// Copyright 2006 Jeff Epler

component charge_pump Create a square-wave for the 'charge pump' input of
some controller boards;
option singleton yes;
pin out bit out Square wave if 'enable' is TRUE or unconnected, low if
'enable' is FALSE;
pin in bit enable = TRUE If FALSE, forces 'out' to be low;
function _ nofp Toggle the output bit (if enabled);
license GPL;
;;
FUNCTION(_) {
if ( enable ) {
out = !out;
} else {
out = 0;
}
}

Not being that well versed in coding (been a very long time) I'm confused.
Do I need to somehow send an enable the charge pump - and how do I go about
doing that automatically as I verbosely stated above?

Thanks.

Greg
