Indeed, great mail Matt.

I've a similar feeling on other free software conventions and sometimes
i think that, as a floss project evolves and matures it has to move from
python/floss conventions to business one or those oriented to simply
mortals and not for geek.

Just a quick thought.

Hello

Thank you a lot to sending your thoughts about improving marketing and
evangelism.

Certainly there is a lot stuff to do on these topic and every new idea
or initiative helps a lot.

From my personal point of view, i believe Plone is in good shape
because a Marketing Plan is being executed. Mark Corum is making an
awesome job
defining and leading it and we've to be a little bit patient because it
is a process and as every process, it takes time and a lot of effort.
The good news is many points you mention are being on included or
planned already.

Regarding some of your points in particular. Afaik marketing mailing
list is not working anymore, we're using evangelism instead. Regarding
poor examples, i think it is a good idea to identify places like you did
and we should just do them, so if you know any other one or need help
for the particular case you mention, just let us know.

It is a pity you can't come to Sorrento nor Penn, there will be
good opportunities to work on these topics. Anyway, I not going neither
because i live too far away, but after wpd i'm focusing on
local/regional promotion organizing a Plone Symposium on November, btw
you're invited to come:
http://plone.org/events/community/plone-south-america-2010 :)

Be prepared, I'm sure there's going to be plenty of opportunities to
contribute on this area in short term. Just keep in touch!

[Evangelism] Share your WPD experience

2010-02-08 Thread Roberto Allende

Hello

In the 2009 WPD survey some people asked to foster experience sharing or
ideas about how to do be a WPD local host. In order to do that I've been
working on a small list of questions for former hosts. In this mail I'm
sending these questions and i'd like to ask to former hosts to answer,
publish on a blog or any other place and send the url to the list. If
you don't have a blog, just simply send the answers here.

It only takes 5 minutes and it would be a great contribution to the
event. You can read a sample on my blog:
http://robertoallende.com/technology/events/wpd-2010-01

So, the questions are:

In which WPD event did you take part as a local host and what kind of
activities did you do?

What strategy did you use to meet with people from these sectors?
How much effort is needed to be a WPD local host?
And what about the results?
In your experience, do you think you have a distinctive characteristic
that may be of interest to the rest of the hosts?

What are your plans for wpd 2010?

[Evangelism] Re: Announcing WPD 2010 Date

2009-09-18 Thread Roberto Allende

Hello

We have several ideas but made no decision yet: a free website for a
NGO, for the municipality or a special focus as 'Intranets with Plone'.

Great idea!... i started to consider it seriously for our local edition.
wpd2010 moves forward, great, great.

Another idea was to show the audience the way we develop and improve
Plone with sprints and to have some kind of national or international
sprint during the WPD over IRC while the sprinters sit in a
neighboring room to the room where we held the talks. So we could show
the audience how we work, how new users can join the community, how
they can report a bug or make a feature request, we can give them a
real open source experience. We could even make live transmissions
from different locations via Skype to show the audience that Plone is
used all over the world.

If i'm not wrong, last year Dylan Jay suggested something like that and
i argued against this idea. After reading your mail and thinking about
it again, i believe, i made a mistake.

World Plone Day is about promoting plone and as Jon Stahl told me once
'We're all figuring it out [how to do it] as we go.'(*) so, if you
believe that could work out, you should *Just do it*.

Organizing a sprint requires extra work, for example contacting core
developers or convincing the plone-tuneup-dream-team joining us,
managing tasks, code and i believe all these tasks are out of my
possibilities, i believe we could start moving forward defining a
champion for it.

Hello

I'm writing in order to move forward two issues of WPD. Then first one

Postmortem document
I need help from one or more volunteers to write a news/press release of
wpd2009. Based on the results and the last year one, it could be a very
easy task to do for anyone who has good skills writing in english and it
would be a huge contribution for the event. If you're interested just
contact me.

WPD 2010 date
We need to define a date for WPD 2010 edition. Last year this discussion
was long and it is difficult to reach consensus when we talk about a
worldwide event, but probably we could start it getting answer from 2
questions:

- Shall we keep april as the month for WPD ?
- Shall we keep doing it in a weekday as Wednesday ?

I suggest to start wpd2010 planning with these points, once defined we
can move forward improving it and get into other important topics.

The project to implement www.gnome.org needs reanimation.

In my opinion tasks are:
1 form a new group of gnome+plone people driving this project to
  success.
2 synchronize requirements with all participants
3 update to Plone 3.2/3.3 (recent stable)

4 setup a public testing environment
5 make it work / fix bugs if any
6 polish content and visuals
7 setup live hosting
8 go-live
9 have a party ;-)

Methods/Tools to reach the goal;

* online coordination (mailinglists, probably IRC)
* wiki
* bug tracker
* sprint

I do believe this is a very great plan.

Sprint:
David Bain offered to organize a sprint at Jamaica. From my experience
its a real good idea to have a sprint to push forward. This needs
fundraising to pay travel- and other expenses. Who can organize
fundraising?

Let's suppose we find someone to do the fundraising task :), which could
be the date for the sprint ?

[Evangelism] promoting WPD

2009-03-11 Thread Roberto Allende

Hello

I'm working with a local government to organize our local WPD. They've
experts on communication stuff and they asked me if we've an alternative
name to promote WPD. The point they mention is that for someone who has
not knowledge about what Plone is, a World Plone Day could have no sense.

By the other hand, i've seen a scrum event called Agile instead of Scrum.

Then... considering what the communication people say, do you think that
if we use Content Management Event or Day, instead of Plone could be
better in terms of communication ?.

Do you have any other suggestion instead ?, i repeat, the goal is to use
a title that someone who doesn't know what Plone is, can get an idea
about what the event is.

I'm asking and considering this to make the experiment at a local level.
This is not a proposal to change the name.

It points out that other CMS are succeeding in getting their press releases

[Evangelism] WPD 2009 Dates

2008-12-24 Thread Roberto Allende

Hello

Thanks again for the very valuable feedback given. To find a good date
is not being easy and even more if we want to choose a good one. Since
WPD involves to much people and places, i think it is very important to
pay attention on the conflicts to foster many places as possible in
order to make wpd stronger as possible.

So. We made very good progress i just ask for a little of patience, we
are almost there :).

Instead of looking the most popular date (+1), i'd like to suggest to
look for the less conflictive one (-1).

So, the last date suggested and until now it doesn't seems to have
conflicts is nate's:

April 22nd, Wednesday

Does anyone has an issue or problem with that date ? If yes, please justify.

Let's give 5 days, up to sunday to hear about it.

Since there are people who prefer Friday, we could think in a World

Regarding your proposal and assuming there are no issue with the week

Hello,

I quite like the World Plone Day logo.

But I think it could be made a little bit stronger for next year. I
found that the text "Plone" was a bit too hard to read in some
situations. Particualry in the tee-shirt prints. Attached is a low
quality photo of NZ tee-shirt. To be fair - in real life "Plone" is a
little bit easier to read on the tee-shirts. (That's Chris Chambers
who organised the of the Auckland event modeling the NZ tee-shirt.)

I suggest that the whole WPD logo should be just one colour way.
(Perhaps "world" and "day" could be just outline text. Leaving "Plone"
with focus as solid text.)

Or at least the text "Plone" should be in the same colour as the Plone logo.

[Evangelism] Re: Lessons learned from the first World Plone Day

2008-11-07 Thread Roberto Allende

Jan Ulrich Hasecke wrote:

Hi all,

the World Plone Day was great fun and a fairly good success given that
it was the first WPD ever and that we started very late to promote it.

So I think we will have a World Plone Day next year.

From the lessons we've learned we should discuss improvements for the
next years WPD.

hello Jan, thank you very much for supporting wpd and your feedback!,
you guys made an awesome job in Germany!

Here are my proposals.

1. True international homepage

We need to have a multilingual website called worldploneday.org, so that
each national team can translate announcements and infos into their
national language and refer to it in their national PR.
when we started the wpd i thought it could be a good idea to have a site
for wpd, but as the organization moved forward i change my mind. There
are good reasons to keep the global communication in plone.org:

1. All the effort of the wpd should be in the local events. Following
this argument, if you need a site, you should create one for your
country or city, and when you promote the wpd in your country, you
should use your site. If you need 'global' elements, you can add a
google map and stuff like this we made already. Doing smt like this,
every host has the freedom to do what it considers necessary and we
don't force to have the same content translated to all the languages.
The people who attended the wpd in my country got informed through our
user group site, not the global place... so it's more important to
invest time on the local version rather the global one,

2. Effort and resources. The wpd 2008 page was very simple, and still it
took me too much time. We should need more people to do a global site,
hosting and so on. Until we don't have a matre event i wouldn't invest
resources on it.

3. Bringing people to plone.org or your local site is good. I like the
idea of having the global event page few clicks close to the download
plone button, or even the local one (we used plone cono sur page to
promote wpd in our region). This is a good way to promote your local
job, in our case, to promote our Plone user group.

2. Refining target group

We discovered that a great percentage of our participants were people
who already heard of Plone before or even uses it already. So it is good
to have a mixture of basic talks like »What Is Plone?« or »The Plone
Community«, but you definitely need some presentations for an advanced
audience, for people who already know Plone and its community.

WPD should be an event to meet new people. I would suggest refining the
communication instead. In our country most of the attendees were new
people. And the 'old' ones cames to meet the new people. How you promote
the event locally will impact the people you bring.

There aren't any restriction here, if your local meeting is focused to
members of the community, it is ok anyway.

3. More time to prepare the World Plone Day

The DZUG e.V. (German Zope User Group) is planning its annual schedule
in late december or early january. In 2008 the WPD-idea came too late
for us, so that we could not support our community in an optimal way.
For our annual plan for 2009 it is crucial to know whether and when
apporximately there will be a WPD in 2009.

I would propose to have a WPD not too late in the year, to avoid
conflicts with the Plone Conference, but I am fine with a World Plone
Day in next years november again.

i think wpd one month after the ploneconf is a good idea. So, when we
know the ploneconf's date we use that date plus a month.

4. Give-aways! I know their were some, but we've got none. :-(

logistics were difficult. Probably we need more resources here.

5. More noise in the media and the web especially all these web 2.0 sites.

we need more help here. Gerry made a great job, but we should have more
people assisting him.

Considering it was the first edition, i think it was a great event, so
it is great you sent feedback because we need it to define the goals for
wpd 2009. Also the numbers, if you can send us how many people attended
in Germany i would thank you a lot!

2008-10-28 Thread Roberto Allende

Hello

If you are not organizing any wpd event or just have some minutes and
want to contribute with WPD, here is your chance:

We need *urgently* a WPD Web 2.0 spreader. The task consist on spreading
wpd as much as possible in the www, that includes adding news in sites
like digg, delicious, twitter, slashdot and many others. Once the news
is added you have write here asking the community join and support it.

The material is ready:
We have a press release: http://plone.org/news/wpd-press-release
And the official WPD site is: http://plone.org/wpd

If you cannot do all the job, but you want to take care doing it in one
site, just do it!

I strongly believe we've a very successful event already, we just need

WPD is an awesome concept, and we all really appreciate the great work

be promoted with either an unmodified version of the Plone logo (e.g.
the logo plus "World Plone Day" text) or a logo that doesn't include

I know this probably seems a bit counterintuitive (heck I find it a bit
counterintuitive myself), but I have a lot of confidence in the wisdom

[Evangelism] WPD Champions

2008-05-06 Thread Roberto Allende

Hello

It would be great if more people join the World Plone Day organization,
and there are some initiatives we could start:

+ World Plone Day Logo
Most of Plone events have great logos, just check NOLA, Plone Symposium
East and PloneConf. The WPD logo will be printed all over the world, it
is a great opportunity for astist to show their work. Then, it would be
great to organize a WPD logo contest. And also would be great if we have
a champion to organize it!. So, would you be interested to champion it ?

+ World Plone Day Flier
We need a flier!... of course the logo will impact on the flier desing,
but we need to decide the flier content. Any volunteer to champion the
flier ?

+ World Plone Day Poll
The WPD is a great opportunity to do a poll to the asistants and know
about what people know, expectations, what are they looking for, and so
on. To have success here we should be able to deal with big challenges,
and it would be great to start discussions about what we should ask to
the people interested in Plone and CMSs. Any volunteer to champion it ?

Don't be afraid to be a champion, remember that a champion is a person
to move forward an issue (not necessarily doing everything). According
to plone.org:

What does it mean to be a champion:

* A champion is the person responsible for moving a focus area
forward, and reporting progress.

* Being a champion does *not* imply that he/she is going to do the
actual work — it's about being the responsible person for that focus
area. Of course, there are cases where the champion is in fact the
person that implements the solution too.

The World Plone Day needs your help, don't hesitate to join!

Ok, 3 persons interested is enough to move forward :D -

We have to decide/suggest the date. According to previous experiences
from other communities, we need at least 3 months to organize and get
critical mass... that lead us to Jun/July but is summer in northern
countries... then we have Plone Conference, so what about November 7th,
it's about a month after the Conf, so everyone is back and we take the
conf to promote and encourage other members to joint the event.

[Evangelism] Plone Day

2008-03-20 Thread Roberto Allende

Hello

What if... we organize a Plone Day ? It's simple and could be very
effective in terms of promotion and buzz: we decide a day and we foster
to community members to organize and give (at least) a Plone
introductory talk in his/her local community (or wherever is easiest for
him/her).

Then we create a page listing all the places in the world where there
will be a talk, we write a press release and we try to reach the medias
promoting the event.

We can continue improving the idea, but before i would like to ask if
you think it's a good idea and how many people here would be interested
work on it.

Kind Regards

Neither of us are qualified to comment on the section of item *2c.
Usability (Developer)* and have left that section blank.

Wow, great job. I share many of the points you write there and i'd like
to talk about some.

Even i think there's a strong technical background here, i assume most
of the people here knows more or less what marketing involves, since the
high % of entrepreneur plone community have. Anyway, just to sake of
clarity i'd like to divide in two groups tasks involved in marketing:

1. Commercial (customer / market)
2. Technological

By commercial i mean customer needs, motivation, when, why and how will
'buy' or not, product, price, promotion, market share, trends, and so on.

Technological
product definition, what the product does, how does it, usability,
quality, performance, current and future features, and so on.

---

After reading your proposal and thinking about a marketing/envagelism
group in Plone, i believe we shouldn't overlap with already existing
groups. I mean:

* Technological issues: there were great and big discussions before,
during and after Plone Summit. Also there're good blog posts about what
plone should or shouldn't do[1][2], tickets and people working on it[3].
So, the best way to get involved in these discussions/decision should be
join/contact these people.

* Plone.org and plone.net: same happens here, there are groups and
people working already, again, the best way should join them.

* Commercial
Identify needs, motivation and the buying process: i don't find someting
here (it's a question). How could we deal with this problem ?, would be
people interested to work on it ?

Market share, trends and other metrics
It would be great to know more about these topics, we could discuss
about market measures, are there something beyond trends.google in order
to know what's happening out there ?, can we determine how big is the
market, what's the place of plone in that market ?. I know researchs
about it but have we got access ?, what do they say about Plone ?.

Promotion: plone.org/plone.net/user groups do a great job here, are
there something else marketing group could do ? what about something
like spreadfirefox (foster to documment plone promotion activities) ?,
to document success histories ?, encourage companies to publish success
histories, how ?

---

If we could agree on the actions to be done by marketing/evangelism
group we could write the goal in these terms, for example "the goal is
to promote plone and to research the plone and cms market". From my
point of view it should be very concrete in order to identify and avoid
overlapping.

Btw, the group could focus just on research/market diagnosis and trigger
projects as could be a new user group or a spreadfirefox-like initiative
wich should have their own life/issues, as most user groups and sites
like plone.org / plone.net have.
