[Gimp-user] Preview in CMYK

2011-09-22 Thread john Culleton
I know there is a function in Gimp for a preview using the CMYK gamut
with the out of gamut colors marked in a special color, often a light
green. I have forgotten how to activate it. The manual didn't seem to
cover it.

Help appreciated.

Understood. Professionals in the world of the printed word need CMYK.

I am reminded of my old sergeant in Korea who told me: "Young
soldier, don't tell me why you can't do it---tell me how you did it."

Scribus does CMYK. Scribus also uses Cairo. If Gimp ever hopes to
compete on an even keel with PhotoShop or even Scribus it should offer
CMYK output too. It is an absolute requirement for printed output.

While we are on the topic of outputs, for years the PostScript output
from Gimp has had default X and Y offset values of 5mm. The default
should be zero of course. I used to go in and patch the source code for
Gimp to zero out the offset defaults. Now I don't bother any more.

Scribus will import PSD and export e.g. png or tiff in RGB model.
However once you are in Scribus you may find that most of what you need
to do can be done in CMYK in that program. My rule is: if headed toward
web presentation work in RGB, if headed for print work in CMYK.

[Gimp-user] Whither CMYK?

2011-09-20 Thread john Culleton

About once a year I ask about a capability to output a file from
Gimp in pdf format and the CMYK color model. In addition it would be
nice if this output was in the PDF X/1-a:2001 format, to satisfy
certain fussy printers. I know there are external converters like
ImageMagick. It would however be nice if after all these years Gimp
catered to the needs of the printing industry.

On my machine /usr/local/ is writable by my own user name. In fact my
own user name owns /usr/local and all its subordinates. So rights are
not the problem. I just have to go through more clicks than is
reasonable just to get back to where I started.

I have a different problem. I am processing a series of screen shots
through Gimp to desaturate them (color pages cost more then B/W
pages.) Each time I retrieve a screen shot from:
/usr/local/active/scribusp
and desaturate it I must chase down the entire file tree to save it
again in
/usr/local/active/scribusp.

I think Gimp should remember the directory from which an image was
loaded.

Gimp 2.6.11 on Linux.

Like many installations, I am the only user of the
computer. So I put it there. Now it appears at the foot of
the filter menu. Progress!

I create a canvas and click on gimpscripter. Should not a
window appear? If not how do I terminate my gimpscripter

I am interested in rewriting some of the logo scripts in

1. Is there a stash somewhere of python scripts for Gimp?
The few that come with the distro help one to interface to

2. Are there any advantages to using 2.7 instead of 2.6.11

I am a total novice with using RAW format. But no guts no

[Gimp-user] Writing a book

2011-07-07 Thread John Culleton
I am writing a book, a paperback extension and revision of
my e-book listed below. The new book will feature Gimp and
Inkscape as well as well as Scribus.

One invariant quality of any book on Open Source software
is that it refers to an obsolete version of said software.
I currently have and use Gimp 2.6.11. That said, is the
release of 2.8 expected wtihin three months? If so I will
use screen shots from 2.7.x. Otherwise I will stick to
2.6.11 for my reference version.

The UI is quite different so that the choice is not
trivial.
Yes, I know, 2.8 will be ready when it is ready. I am just
asking for a best guess based on prior history of Gimp
releases and the complexities of this one.

Gimp is an Open Source program that runs on MSWin, OS X and
Linux. It is similar in purpose to Photoshop but does not
produce CMYK output, just RGB.

To install Gimp you download it over the Internet. Please
visit http://www.gimp.org for details.

The user can click on the help facility and view the Gimp
Manual in an html viewer. Other than that there is no
operational connection to the internet. No ports are
opened. It is a stand-alone local program.

Gimp has been in use for many years on many systems in
many shops. It is not scary.

I know of no vulnarabilities. But I operate on Linux where
vulnerabilities are seldom an issue.

[Gimp-user] Rotation witout cropping.

2011-06-25 Thread John Culleton
When I open a rectangular photographic image (JPG) and
rotate it 90 degrees, the canvas remains the same and the
ends of the photo are cropped. I there a way to rotate the
whole shebang so this cropping doesn't happen?

Telling the canvas to resize to the picture doesn't seem to
work for me.

Well that was an authoritative set of responses! I will look forward to the
new edition. In addition to being most informative it is a very handsome book.

I write, publish, index and lay out books. Your book sets a very high standard
and I salute your product.

In the meantime I will look at Chrome more carefully. Sometimes I use the
routines under logos and modify the results to suit my needs. For example I
almost always eliminate the background layer. Chrome may or may not match up
to the routine taken from "The Artist's Guide to Gimp Effects"

Stay tuned :<)

[Gimp-user] Producing Gel text.

2011-06-19 Thread John Culleton
The excellent book by Michael J Hammel "The Artist's Guide to Gimp Effects"
describes in detail the creation of "gel" text for book covers, web pages etc.
I developed my own summary checklist following the guidance in his book. And
it works in production.

The bad news is his list has 37 steps. And his book was written in the days of
Gimp 2.2, looking forward to 2.4. Today 2.6.11 is the stable version and 2.7.x
is in use by many. So I ask the group to look over the 37 steps listed below
and evaluate whether there are better approaches available in e.g., 2.6.11
that can shorten the list a bit.

I attached a small script in Guile I made a long time ago. It isn't
exactly what you want (doesn't rotate, for example), but that shouldn't
be too hard to add.

You can add labels, make them semi-transparent, etc.

I have spent some hours analyzing the question further. We have plenty of
examples of script-fu and plenty of tutorials for Python. We also have a
whole fistful of plug-ins written in a compiler language. Is this C?

In my case the program itself is purely linear, 37 steps taken in a certain
order. To this we can add at the front end a step or steps of collecting
information from the user, via a screen with labels and input fields. But
the whole process is straight line with no conditionals or branches. In
this situation object oriantation woud seem to be irrelevant. It is all a
straight line of step one followed by step two.

I have some early kindergarten level questions:

1. In the script-fu examples: functions or modules or whatever within Gimp
itself are called by certain names and fed certain values. Do these
identical names work in Python also? I see no centralized list of functions
by name.

2. Does it really matter to Gimp in what language the script or plug-ins
are written? For example could one write a plug-in using C or even Tcl-Tk
so long as the right calls were made? Or must one use a special language-
specific interface package?

In short before I go further I need ot know more about the gimp--plugin
or script interface. I get that the plug in muist be registered with
gimp. But is that registration process also just another call to a
module written in C?

If the OP is working in Linux then perhaps the swap space would take up the
slack. Also, it may be possible to produce all the pieces of the collage in
Gimp and then stitch them together in another program, such as Scribus or
ImageMagick. ImageMagick has a Montage program that might be useful. Any
program that lacks the memory overhead of Gimp could be used.

Gimp 2.6.11 on Slackware Linux:

1. Do python scripts go into the same folder as .scm scripts? If not, where? I
find the .scm scripts in

/usr/share/gimp/2.0/scripts

2. I don't know either language but have programmed in COBOL and Tcl/Tk with

easiest to master for my first plug-in?

The task I have in mind is "gel" text as described in "The Artist's Guide to

much fun going through the 26 +/- steps over and over.

In the layer window when you click on a layer the whole layer bar gets a blue
background and that is the active layer. To isolate that layer click the eye
icon for each other layer. That makes the other layers invisible. If the eye
icon is visible then that layer is visible and if it isn't then the layer is
invisible.

Just remember, the layer with the blue background is the active layer and the
layer(s) with the eye icon are visible. That is obvious to experienced users
but not necessarily obvious to those coming to Gimp from other software.

Gifs are only suitable for web pages. So that should not be an
issue one would hope.

With respect to your original tiff files, if you have a suitable
viewer you can view them as is. On Slackware Linux I have
several, including XV and Gwenview. Ubuntu typically doesn't
come with a complete set of tools but you could try downloading
either of the two I mention above. Then once set at a suitable
enlargement you can use Ksnapshot to save the drawing as a png
file at 72dpi.

Are the architectural drawings available in a vector format such as
svg or pdf? These are normally much smaller for drawings etc.
than their bitmapped equivalents.

If not you might have better luck importing them as bitmaps into
Inkscape and then converting them to svg or pdf using either trace
mode or outline mode.

Why would you address the bounces list?

Gimp runs well on Linux but it also runs on Windows and OS X.
Perhaps you meant "Open Source" software.

The rather old book "Grokking the Gimp" has a two page
dissertation on panoramas (256-257).

My experience with TeX, Gimp, Scribus, Inkscape etc. is that, while
the software and the support are free, successful use also requires
a library of good books on the software. I also own (and use) "The
Artist's Guide to Gimp Effects." Amazon lists some other titles I
haven't bought yet.

Not solved yet, but I detected that renaming the font, then running
fc-cache, makes the font appear in Gimp! I first thought that
changing .TTF to .ttf had done the trick, but just changing _anything_
in the font name works.

Changing back to the original name, makes the font disappear again, as
if there is a blacklist somewhere... Strange!

Hello people.

At some point - I'm not clear when - something changed with my fonts
(Linux - Slackware64 13.1). Now I cannot select, for example, the bold
or italic version of DejaVu Sans. The appear as Regular.

- I tried to install the newest package for the dejavu fonts,

- ran mkfontscale

- ran mkfontdir

- Though probably unnecessary, ran fc-cache

First tried to 'reload fonts' (button in fonts dialog) in Gimp, then
tried to restart gimp entirely. (and from a terminal to check for any
messages with --verbose).

Am I missing some important step?

I don't try to use the print capabilities of Gimp, of Inkscape, of
Krita, of Scribus or whatever. It is easier to save a file (PDF
anyone?) and print that file out using e.g., Acrobat Reader.

And now a question. Why are you "upgrading" to the effectively
abandoned product Vista? Would not Windows 7 make more sense?

[Gimp-user] Script-fu script defaults

2010-10-05 Thread John Coppens
Hello people.

A couple of years ago, I wrote a script to add titles to images. I
offer the options of position, color and combination mode in the dialog.
I use this script quite often.

I never found if it is possible to assign default values to the
variables, eg. set the color dialog by default to gray 25%, or set a
dropdown selection to a particular value. (I know, in this case I could
simply change the order of the items, but still...)

If this is documented somewhere, I'd appreciate a pointer.

Hello Alexandre.

I believe I can confirm that, on at least one instance, the link to to
gimp-tutorials.net produced the page the OP described. I suspect this
is when the host where that site is located, cannot find the correct
domain (page?) and replaces it with another one with related content.

Again - just a suspicion of mine - I guess this happens when
gimp-tutorials.net temporarily (maintenance?) disappears. This policy
seems to be popular with hosts who want to make the most of badly typed
URLs and site outages.

Re: [Gimp-user] fuzzy around text

2010-09-28 Thread John Mills
Finally - one I may be able to answer ..

Try scaling the image close to the size and resolution you expect to print
_before_ you add the text. I believe the text is essentially bitmapped
onto your image when you add it. If your printing implies a substantial
enlargement you may be looking at the edges of the text as it was
rendered.

Just a guess, but I had a similar problem when I started out and that was
the reason for ragged edges and fuzzy characters on my text. You may even
want to create your image at higher resolution than you will print it --
at least once or twice as experiments.

It appears that the English version of the help file is corrupted. First I get
ftp download errors (binary download) for lines that consist only of a
carriage return. I did it twice and got the same message. Next when I try to
bunzip2 the file I get

bunzip2: Data integrity error when decompressing.
Input file = gimp-help-2.6.0-html-en.tar.bz2, output file = gimp-

I can keep trying, but is this a known defect?

Maybe try this:

Use the Path tool to mark out a suitable bit of wall
elsewhere in the picture
Path to Selection
Click on the selected area, Edit=>Copy
Then Edit =>Paste
Go to Layers. Make the Floating Selection into a New Layer.
Go to Move tool.
Move the Pasted area (the wall) where you want it to cover
up the guest.
Then Anchor it, Merge Visible Layers or Flatten Image to fix
it in place.

You'll probably need to fiddle a bit to get a patch of wall
that matches its surroundings properly.
If you can't get a perfect match straight away you can
usually finish off the edges with the clone tool.

[Gimp-user] Removing white border.

2010-07-21 Thread John Culleton
This problem involves an illo to be used on a book cover in
Scribus.

Some time back I took a photo of a church with a white sky
background (OK very light gray). I was able to select and
delete the background so now I have the church plus a
transparent background. I saved it as png. When i used it
there was a very thin border of white pixels around the
outline of the church and its steeples etc. A Photoshop guy
said I could select the church, invert so that the background
was selected, enlarge the background by a few pixels and
delete it again to get rid of the white line. But right now the
background is just a transparency.

Currently the illo is in png form, though of course I can go
back to the original jpg from the scanner. Using either
product, the png or the original jpg, how do I eliminate both
the sky and the white line? I want the background to be
totally transparent. I have Gimp 2.6.6 on Slackware 13.0
Linux.

Hey, I may not live that long :<). Krita has had CMYK for
years. But of course Krita lacks the full feature set of Gimp.
Maybe some of that Krita code could be lifted for Gimp, just
as InDesign lifted important features from TeX.

Can't let this one go by. Those of us who work with print books
have been asking for CMYK output from Gimp for many years.
Scribus, a much newer product, already has it, along with ICC
profiles and pdf x/1-a output and so on. Krita, a not very well-
known drawing program that is part of KDE, has had CMYK color
model for years.

The developers of Gimp have never given the needs of print media
a high priority. As a result most people in the world of print media
don't use Gimp. The usual response from the developers of Gimp
is that there is little demand for CMYK. But the facts are that those
of us who work in print media don't use Gimp very much precisely
because it won't deal in CMYK. So it becomes a self-fulfilling
prophecy.

When Gimp is used on images intended for print then another
program such as Scribus or ImageMagick is used after the Gimp
work is complete to do the conversion.

Inkscape, an Illustrator-like product also lacks the internal CMYK
model. Its base output is svg, which is inherently RGB. But it is
making moves toward CMYK output. Colors can be defined in
(limited) CMYK terms. The problem with RGB to CMYK output is the
difference between the gamuts of the two models. So it is possible
in Inkscape to define a color that falls in the CMYK gamut.

Bitmap images such as photos are a different matter. Krita will
use the CMYK model and also import specific "raw" formats for
various cameras. So it has potential for being both a frontend
and/or a backend to Gimp in a workflow without resorting to
plugins etc. The feature set of Krita is nowhere near as complete
as that of Gimp, so it is not a full replacement. And it is limited to
machines that have the KDE software available. I use it on my
Slackware 13.0 Linux box even though I use XFCE instead of KDE 4
for my user interface.

EXIF data in 'Extra' information, generally things such as dates,

I circulated a script yesterday for rounding corners using the above listed
script. I got two suggestions for changes but neither resulting in a working
script. Is there a list member that would be willing to send me a small
working script using "script-fu-round-corners" so I can learn how to use it.
Thank you very much.

Saul,

Thanks for your suggestion. I moved the flatten command but the script still
doesn't execute.

Here I am now:

(define (round-corners filein fileout)
(let* ((image (car (gimp-file-load RUN-NONINTERACTIVE filein filein)))
   (drawable (car (gimp-image-get-active-layer image
 (script-fu-round-corners RUN-NONINTERACTIVE
 image drawable 15.0 TRUE 8.0 8.0 15.0 TRUE FALSE)
 (set! drawable (car (gimp-image-flatten image)))
(gimp-file-save RUN-NONINTERACTIVE image drawable fileout fileout)
 (gimp-image-delete image)))

Sven,

I just looked at the flatten command that was added and think I had detected an
error. I tried:

 (set! drawable (car (gimp-image-flatten image)))

Unfortunately, the script still will not execute without an error.

Hi John,

I've replied this email on the list, rather than to you personally, so that
others can help/be helped. I'm not quite sure what you mean by an image object
- GIMP is, in general, a raster editor so we don't really use objects. You can
access the layers dialog by Windows -> Dockable Dialogs -> Layers (should be in
the second section). That shows a preview list of the layers you have on your
image and you can select the specific layer from there.

You might wish to read
http://docs.gimp.org/2.6/en/gimp-image-combining.html#gimp-concepts-layers for
more information about layers.

Kind regards
Xiella

John,

If you want to resize the background layer without affecting other
layers, I think you won't find a software package that does that. To
resize all layers, though:

Image -> Scale image

To resize only the background, the best you can do, I think is to
paste background layer in another image, and use the option above to
scale that. Then paste it back into the original image, and remove the
original background layer (if you don't need it anymore).

[Gimp-user] looking for binary software to install

Hi,

I am just looking for your binary software to download so that I can install it
to my computer with the OS Windows XP (even old version is fine to me). Viewed
your web site, but it's hard to find any binary software there. I am not
interested in the source code.

I am a web developer using the MS ASP.Net and I would like to use your software

[Gimp-user] font location.

2010-04-03 Thread John Culleton
I wanted to use the free Pricedown font in a Gimp process. First I put it
in my home directory:
/home/safe/.gimp-2.6/fonts/pricedow.ttf
Gimp didn't find it.
Then I put it in
/usr/share/fonts/TTF/pricedow.ttf
Gimp didn't find it.
Then I put it in /usr/share/gimp/2.0/fonts/pricedow.ttf
Gimp found it.

Now we are a long way from 2.0. Why do I have to put a font in there to be
found? And why doesn't the online Gimp manual say anything about font
installation?

This is typically a request for a vector drawing program (such as

That said, probably the nearest you can get (with GIMP) is using Filters

I don't know Synaptic, but I'm guessing the libgegl-0.0-0 package will
install as the correct .so.0 library. Package names usually don't include

Thanks to Stefan, Dan, and David for your replies. I'll look into all
three approaches, but this looks most directly like what I had in mind.

My limited intuition seemed to suggest that since RGB is an additive

Hi, Anthony.

I believe the problem is that you are making a gray gradient (which means
that all three colors are changing equally). This means that you have
only 256 levels available to render the gradient.

Then you are trying to produce a gradient from value 84 to 129, which are
only 55 steps, over a distance of couple of 100 pixels - this causes the
banding.

I may be wrong here - I haven't used it yet - but I believe GEGL provides
you with a lot more precision in the colors. You may not be able to see
it on the screen, as your monitor probably has the same 256 level limit,
and you'll have to use a special output format for the same reason (eg.
16 bit PNG).

This kind of problem frequently appears in the sky part of images, the
the blue gradient can present a real challenge.

Ilya -

Thanks for your earlier note -- I am quite happy to stand corrected and
your post suggests a basic experiment I can easily do: compare in-camera
processed and post-processed RAW images for the same scene and settings.

I'll have a limited sample to work with: my only camera delivering RAW
images is a Pentax K100D, quite dated now by newer technology. On the
other hand, I can compare UFRaw into GIMP and Photoshop Elements with the
Pentax plug-in into PSE and (if I have a suitable intermediate format)
into GIMP. At the very least I'll learn something.

If I see anything surprising or interesting I may share it and hopefully
get useful feedback. Anyway, there's no substitute for knowing what one's
own equipment does.

I'm not sure I follow that, unless the sensor's bit-depth and that of the
camera's RAW format are different.

I'm not at the stage of getting full scale from my images: still working
for consistent, decent quality prints from straight-forward subjects.

Re: [Gimp-user] Another Gimp/UFRaw topic

2009-09-30 Thread John Mills
Bryan -

Wiser heads will probably correct or refine this, but ...

The 'raw' file is supposed to represent data very close to what is
provided by the camera's sensor array.

Before saving images in non-raw formats (JPEG, etc.) the camera performs
some conversions of the image field as well as - usually - applying some
compression. These conversions are irreversible and represent a compromise
intended to give pleasing images of common subjects.

This is crudely analogous to the processing applied to color negatives by
most photo processors as they are printed - you have probably seen the
quite surprising results this sometimes gives: colors gone crazy!

UFRaw gives you the chance to make different assumptions and adjustments,
and keeps the original image file untouched in case you want another
chance. It also provides as default a compensation similar to what the
camera would have done if left to its own algorithms. That's what you get
if you don't intervene.

If you aren't making any adjustments in UFRaw you may be just as well-off
to work with [say] JPEG images out of your camera. The intermediate stage
of adjusting your image in UFRaw is one of the main reasons for using RAW
format in the first place.

At least that's my [mis?]understanding.

You might be able to create a multipage document using Scribus, then
export it as tiff. But the purpose of such an exercise escapes me.
Why not deal with pdf instead? That is more suited for printing.

Since you do not have control over your networked copy of Gimp I
suggest another route. As I recall the self loading Debian system
called Knoppix contains a fairly recent copy of Gimp. You download
the cdr image, burn it on a disk and then whenever you need to use
Gimp just pop in the disk and wait for it to load. You can still
access and save files on your hard disk. This bypasses the NFS
facility entirely and gives you a more up to date copy of Gimp.

If you can't burn an iso image on your system then you can buy a
Knoppix disk mail order for about $10.

[Gimp-user] freefonts & sharefonts on MSWin

2009-08-02 Thread John Culleton
A bit of background: the last version of MSWin I used regularly was
3.1.

I have only used Gimp under Linux. For the Linux user the
incorporation of all the fonts contained in the freefonts and
sharefonts packages are pretty well defined. Installation of a
single font under MSWin is also well defined. But how does one
install an entire collection like the two mentioned? I have WinXP
on a spare partition to experiment with.

I am making a chart of all the different logos under the

First it calls for Cooper which is not on my system. Second, even
when I substitute an available font (e.g., Cooper Heavy) all I get
is a black image. The layers dialog just shows a background layer

Should I just give up on Chalk? I have Gimp 2.6.6 on Slackware

My history with Gimp is much more limited than yours. I have always
used Gimp for creation/manipulation of images and some other
program for printing out the results in a document. When I rarely
need to print color work locally I throw a switch to redirect
traffic to my Epson Stylus Color 880 and select that printer from
the Cups popup. Someday I hope to get a color laser. But I will
still use Gimp for image massaging and something else to print out
the results.

Perhaps I should test Gutenprint directly from Gimp just to be sure
it works.

My Epson 880 is ancient. Hence it is well understood by software.
When it dies I may try to find another on EBay.

As my father would say, there are horses for courses.

Although Gimp has some nice type effects it is not really a
typesetting engine. In a book or an ad small type is vector in
nature. Gimp is basically bitmap in nature.

I find that using a combination of tools works best. For example you
could create your ad in Gimp except for the small type. Import that
image into Scribus and set the type there overlaying the graphic
art. You could use TeX also (particularly the Context variant)
but that is a lot more trouble.

For examples of Gimp/Scribus combination images please visit
http://wexfordpress.net/illos.html. Look at the Loon Lake Legacy
romantic novel example in particular. The main title type is from
a Gimp logo with some layers supressed. The spine and the back
cover type is set by Scribus. This particular book cover image is
created at 72 DPI for web use. For a real book I would use 300 DPI.

Understood. However I find Gimp 2.6 better than 2.4, which is what
the latest stable version of my distro offers. So I will continue
to be a user who compiles.

I must admit, compiling is becoming more difficult. Scribus uses
cmake. Inkscape uses Automake and requires that you install
Boehm-GC and Boost. The day of untar, ./configure, make and make
install is apparently passing.

The hangup for many users is gegl and babl, and not the other
requirements. The distros are more likely to include them. perhaps
it is because gegl and babl are relatively new libraries, while the
others have been with us for quite a while.

The version that matches the version of Gimp in the tarball is what
should be included IMO. Presumably that is the version that is on
gimp.org now. If e.g. Slackware can prepackage Gimp with all the
required libraries it seems to me that the Gimp folks could do the
same. But I guess we will have to disagree on this.

For Slack users the packages are usually a year or more old so we
get in the habit of compiling from a more current tarball. Also,
many packages are not included in the distros. Open Cobol is a good
example. Everybody compiles it. Currently I am at Gimp 2.6.6
and I had to go through the gegl and babl stuff again (new
computer).

I see no compelling reason not to include the libs in the tarball.

There are lots of tutorials floating around, but I find the old book
_Grokking the Gimp_ or the newer book _The Artist's Guide to Gimp
Effects_ the tutorials I look at most often. No, they aren't cheap.
The complete manual is also available both for purchase and for
download but it is more of a reference book, going 850 pages or so.

If you Google on Gimp Tutorial you will get many answers but some
are pretty obsolete (like 2002).

You have to download, compile (?) and install the latest versions of
babl and gegl. It is a royal pain but once it is done you are set
for several upgrades, until Gimp requires a newer version. IMO
these required libraries should be embedded in the Gimp release
itself but there may be turf issues that prevent that.

[Gimp-user] GEGL crashes Gimp 2.6.6 on XP

2009-07-15 Thread John
Using Gimp 2.6.6 on XP SP3 and all current updates.
When attempting at open the GEGL dialog, Gimp crashes.
Anything else that I try works just fine (so far).
Is this known? Is there a work around?
Gimp 2.6.4 did not crash.
