Re: Calendar Issues

2013-09-23 Thread Kirsten Edmondson
Hi,
I have investigated the calendar for the first time today, whilst trying to put
in a doctors appointment. I have to admit I was totally horrified! I think I
have now managed to put my appointment in twice, because no matter how many
times I click done, I cannot locate it in the events. My appointment is on the
half hour for example, all I can do it access hour by hour. Thank you Kara very
much for your details on how to use it they are very helpful! However, the
meantime, I think I may invest in VO calendar, even though it is more expensive
and the calendar in itself should work without a problem. I wanted to check, if
I do get this app, you said it links to your existing calendar. If Apple made
any changes to the calendar so it feels more user friendly, will I be able to
just go back to that and all my appointments will be there too? It talked about
them transferring from the native calendar, but do they transfer back? I have
Gmail, but I have never used a calendar. I see that this new iOS version allows
you to use your Gmail calendar. Would it be easier if I were to do that
instead? I'm so disappointed because I use the calendar all the time! I know
Cara you make it sound really easy, but it really seems counterintuitive and I
really cannot be spending all my time trying to find my appointments like I am
now…

GPS app that works inside?

2013-02-20 Thread Kirsten Edmondson
Hello, I have almost a dozen GPS apps for my iPhone. I'm pretty certain that
one was mentioned a few months back that could work indoors. I think I might
have it, but I can't remember which one it was. What I'm looking for is one
which can get you around inside shopping malls, and can help you identify the
different shops. Does this exist? Or is this just in my dreams?
I want to go to my local Apple Store to buy an iPad mini-ironically-but I'm not
quite sure where it is, and the shopping mall is really open and massive and
difficult to navigate, even though I do have a guide dog.

Re: Notifications and the native twitter app

Notifications have been a bit funny since the recent update. A few people I
know, including me, have had to uninstall the app and reinstall it in order to
get notifications to work again even though they are already on. This did not

Fwd: Completing surveys using Voice-over

2013-02-23 Thread Kirsten Edmondson
Dear all,
I don't know if anyone else has experienced this, but it is starting to bug me,
so below is the email I sent to Apple Accessibility.

Begin forwarded message:

 From: Kirsten Edmondson kirsten.edmond...@btinternet.com
 Subject: Completing surveys using Voice-over
 Date: 24 February 2013 04:02:35 GMT
 To: accessibil...@apple.com
 Cc: Kirsten Edmondson kirsten.edmond...@btinternet.com

 Dear Apple,
I am writing as I have noticed the below problem on several occasions over
 the past few months.
I'm sure you are familiar with the situation where you are emailed a link and
asked to complete a survey? For example, when having gone to the Apple store
for example. I access my emails-usually-on my IPhone 4S and so I double-tap
on the link to the survey (as I am a voice-over user). The page always loads
fine. Say, for example that is the Apple own one, or any made by Survey
Monkey-if you are familiar with that site-as that is where a lot of them come
 from.
You double-tap on start or the equivalent. The questions which come up in
front of you are multiple choice and need checkboxes ticking in order to
choose one or various responses as appropriate. This should not be a problem,
as reading checkboxes and then double-tapping on them to tick is easy.
However, There are often three problems which now occur which prevent
proper/complete filling in of such surveys.
 1. The line of the question is often repeated where the first checkbox is
 found.
 2. No checkbox for ticking is identified by Voice-over
and 3. Thus, there is no way to tick at least one of the boxes. This means,
that if the answer you want to choose is the first one, you are unable to
tick it. It's not as if the boxes are totally out of line with the parts of
the question, as otherwise they would hang over the end of the question and
it would be doable to work out which box belongs where.
Say for example the the question is asking to select your gender, if Female
is first and then Male and then Rather Not Say, the only ones available to
check would be Male and Rather Not Say. This is alright if you are not Female
... :) But often surveys prevent you from moving on if you have not chosen an
answer-and thus you cannot do the survey.
I write today because I have found the same problem with a survey I was sent
from Apple, so I thought it was time to make you aware of this situation.
This particular survey was one of the ones you send out after someone has
shopped in an Apple Store, to see how they found the service. I found that I
could complete most of it, but as I got to the end, I had to choose one of
two options, neither of these appeared as a checkbox, thus when I
double-tapped on them, nothing happened. Therefore, when I pressed next I was
told I had not filled in a required section. This means I cannot complete the
 survey.
I will have to do it on my Mac, as when a survey does not work on Safari on
the IPhone, I end up logging onto my MBP or my Windows PC to complete the
 survey successfully.
I used to think that this was a problem with the makers of surveys, that they
had not made them accessible enough. This may well be the case, but I wanted
to alert you, in case there is something you can do with the IPhone, Safari
and Voice-over to make them read them correctly-as that seems to be where the
 problems reside.
Kind regards, and thanks for looking into this.

Periodic table app accessibility query

2013-06-18 Thread Kirsten Edmondson
Hi all,
I have a blind student who needs to use voice over on the iPad three. His
science teacher has recommended a periodic table app. Unfortunately, I know no

experience of whether there is an app for the periodic table which is voice

I don't want to bother getting it if it's not going to be any good… And the
teacher concerned would never have used it with voice-over so might think
everything works.
Any thoughts would be welcome.
Thanks.

Perhaps slightly OT.voiceye

2013-06-18 Thread Kirsten Edmondson
I have recently learnt about this product. I understand that it is a way of
incorporating an entire text into a bar code. You then use the app, available
on iPhone etc, or an existing piece of software, in the UK, available from
sight and sound technology, to read the bar code and work out what the text is
inside. Does anyone have any experience of using this? Is it worth looking into
and getting? It sounds very intriguing, but potentially, it could be very
complicated too! Do a lot of things now automatically use such barcodes? Or is
this something you have to set up manually every time?
Any thoughts would be very welcome!
Thanks in advance,

Re: Periodic table app accessibility query

2013-06-18 Thread Kirsten Edmondson
Thanks! That's great. I saw a few different ones but it was so difficult to
tell. Sometimes I do wish that like on Appleviz, developers would be expected
to write about accessibility/voice-over. It would make trawling the App Store
so much easier. I know this has been mentioned before and of course is off
topic, so I do not intend this to start a conversation, just thought I'd
observe. Thanks for the recommendation.

Solo-DX wants to make the experience better by having the blind

Latest version of dropbox for iPhone, is it working?

2013-12-13 Thread Kirsten Edmondson
Hi, I've avoided updating dropbox for the last month or so because I heard that
it was not very usable. I use dropbox on a very regular basis for my work, and

people thought. Is it now working fine? Or are they still issues with it?
Many thanks.

Re: AudioBooks.com

2012-08-31 Thread Kirsten Edmondson
That sounds like rather a lot of money for a service where you wouldn't even
get to keep the books after you'd paid all that money! I read a great deal, but
not even I would use that and audible is so much the better as a previous
poster said ...
Someone please correct me if I'm wrong, as I always like ways of getting books,
but that price only seems like good value for money if you can have access
permanently to them from when you start listening to whenever you choose not to
have them any more. It shouldn't be dictated to you!

When you know exactly what messages you wish to delete, when in the
Inbox folder, and not a message, find the edit button located to the
right of the heading for the title of the folder. Activate this, and
then begin flicking right and double tapping the messages you wish to
delete. At the bottom of the current view of messages is a move

folders. Navigate to the trash folder, double tap, and all those
messages you earlier selected will be moved to your Trash folder, and
ultimatley deleted after 2 weeks on your phone. Note that this does
not delete your messages from the Gmail server, it moves them into the

uploading photos on Faceley

2012-08-31 Thread Kirsten Edmondson
Hi all,
I am posing this question on behalf of a friend. She has tried everything to
upload photos onto Facebook. None of the apps seem to work for it, they will
all get so far but then they won't tell her what photo she is uploading or
where to etc etc
She has found that faceley is the most accessible so far. However, she has a
question which she would be grateful if you could answer for her.
I will pass on any responses.
She is able to select a photo and upload it, but when she wants to put it in a
particular album she is finding it difficult. She has about 12 albums available
to her, but the scroll box seems to work like a combo box which does auto
selection, (like JAWS does when you don't press alt and down arrow) – for those
of you who know what I'm talking about. If she swipes up it just selects the
first one and puts the photo in the album. Even if that's not the album she
wants. It seems to get stuck at that point and she cannot choose another album.
Even though she knows there are another 11 available.
Does anyone know any way of activating this scrollbox so that it brings up the
whole list and she can then double tap on the one she wants rather than it
selecting the next one. At the moment, she swipes up once and it will go up one
album, butthen she has to do the same action several times over in order to get
all the way around and go through the albums available. To be specific, she
double taps, swipes up, then has to swipe away and back and then double tap and
swipe up which will select the second one up and then over and over. It relies
on her remembering in what order the albums are in too. This is rather fiddly,
don't you think?
She has tried all the traditional things: double tap; double tap and hold;
sliding; touching the middle of the screen to refresh; tapping top/bottom;
swiping down with three fingers etc etc, but nothing seems to make this box
work any differently to the way it does. Is it just inaccessible, or I mean,
poorly designed, and something she will just have to put up with as it is the
only one she can use, even if slow. Or does anyone know of a way that
definitely works or have any idea what might work.
Your help is much appreciated!
Thanks in advance

On my 4S I double-tap--Hold, wait for the tri-tone and while it is still
sounding I do a quick swipe to the right. This only works about 80% of the
time and the timing of the last part of the gesture seems to be the key, it

continuous gesture without a finger lift inbetween.

Once I get my 3GS back from the person who borrowed it way too long ago I'll
try the same thing with the slower processor and report my findings. It's
not you but the gesture seems about as consistent as do the ones pertaining
to the rotor. The rotor will cooperate 90% of the time and sometimes
twisting it one direction works better than the other. But hey, 90's better

Now if I could just talk Siri into doing that part . . .

VO in iOS six question

Hi all,
Funny problem with VO since updating to iOS six. I have the HQ issue of course

will get irritating having to change it every time. This never used to happen

It's been two days and I still haven't got it though. Thanks

Re: VO in iOS six question

2012-09-21 Thread Kirsten Edmondson
My Samantha, which is the one I want to use over Daniel, is selected in
language lroa. As Les says, it isn't at the top of the list though, there was
never a way to change the default language before, but it would let you stick
with another language and it would retain it. What is different now? I'm not
that sure that moving it to the top of the list would help, though I'll try it.
Is there any other way to tell the phone I want Samantha? I don't think I can
unselect British English as a default, so at the moment I have both selected
and I change it in the rotor itself, although when I double tap on it in the
settings, it doesn't make any difference, I have to change it using the rotor
action.

What does it mean by turn compact voice off?
It doesn't seem to have anything about HQ yet, does this mean it hasn't

Reporting bugs to Apple accessibility

2012-09-22 Thread Kirsten Edmondson
Hi, how many bugs can you report to Apple accessibility at once? Do you have to
email them each one separately? I have 3 to report but before I email I wanted
to check.
I am loving iOS six! It is much quicker and apart from a few minor issues it is
great. I particularly like how you don't have to double tap the more numbers,
shift, delete, etc any more, makes typing much quicker… My dictation was very
slow yesterday, but it seems to have improved… And Siri seems to be generally
more responsive too.

Re: VO focus in email lists

2012-09-22 Thread Kirsten Edmondson
Yes, there is a general focus problem with VO and iOS six and a few apps. It's
one of the bugs I intend to report. I noticed it in email too, and also in
Twitter and particularly with edit fields. I thought at first with twitter, it
was Twitter itself, but after you've been in and read a tweet or an article or
reply to something, it puts you back at the top of your tweets, very annoying
if you read your timeline backwards as I do. Also when you are wanting to go in
to an edit field, although it says editing, the focus seems to be on the cancel
button, so if you are dictating it is fine, you can press dictate and it will
work, but if you want to type, you have to swipe to make sure you're in the
edit box. When swiping sometimes, it will move to the status bar rather than
swiping through. Additionally, it seems to jump, so when you are editing what
you have written, it will put new things not where you wanted them to go: this
is extremely irritating!(Though I have only noticed this last problem in
twitter, when I am trying to select someone to mention, it moves, it doesn't
seem to happen when editing a message in mail, so perhaps this is just a
Twitter problem only). If anyone can reproduce this in particular, that would
be good.
In messages, it seems to be putting you on the messages tab at the start of
the app rather than near the message you want to read.

the message you closed was some way down. This means you have to swipe right

Re: VO in iOS six question

2012-09-22 Thread Kirsten Edmondson
Thanks Sieghard, I wasn't quite sure how reordering worked and this explains it
brilliantly and thoroughly! It won't solve my default issue though, as I don't
want to change the international settings and change the date etc. I have
reported it to Apple though and maybe they will do something about it. It was
never a problem in five, so I don't know what they've done to make voice-over
start in your default language on start-up now. :(
As for the difference between high-quality and compact, I am getting used to
the change of pitch, I couldn't notice the difference between HQ and compact
though I have had them off and on invariably, I quite like the fact that when
you delete a letter it is at a lower pitch and when you insert one it's at a
higher pitch, I don't know if this is new to iOS six or the voice was never
differentiated enough before but I never noticed it before.

 Hi Stan,

You can reorder the languages in the language rotor. Here are the steps
(these also apply to reordering Favourites in the Phone app and in some
other areas I can't think of right now):

Go to the Language rotor. I will use the example of US English and British
 English.

You have the list of languages down the left side and to the right of each
language is a button which Voiceover announces as Reorder US English
Button, Dragable or British English button, Dragable.

Also, those languages that are selected to appear in the language rotor will
say Selected, e.g. Selected, US English or Selected, British English.
If any are selected you don't want or if there are some you want that are
not selected, just double tap on the language on the left side and it will
 be selected or deselected.

Now, in order to put US English at the top of the list, find it in the list
on the left, then flick right to the Reorder US English button. If you
have Speak Hints enabled in the main Voiceover settings (it's the first
item after Practice Area) Voiceover will say the following after you flick
 to the Reorder button:

Double tap and hold, wait for the sound, then drag to rearrange

So, once you are on the reorder button, double tap and hold it until you
hear the TriTone just as you would do to move an app or remove an app from
the app switcher. After the tone sounds just drag your finger straight up on
the screen without lifting it first.

Each time you drag a language above the one before it in the list you hear a
short metallic sounding ping and Voiceover will announce Moved above and
the name of the language. For example, let's assume you have British
English at the very top of the list, then you have Australian English and
then US English (I am using the English languages as examples, keep in mind
that any other languages like French, German, Dutch etc. will be spoken in
their language, so German is spoken not as German but as Deutsch.

In my example you want to drag US English first above Australian English and
 then above British English.

 1. Double tap and hold on the Reorder US English Button and wait for the
 tone
 2. Drag your finger straight up slowly and by just a small distance.
 3. You will hear a ping and Voiceover will say Moved above Australian
 English.
 4. Drag on a bit further and you hear Moved above British English.

Once you reach the top you can continue dragging and nothing happens, no
more pings, no more announcements since you can't go any further.

Now you can exit Settings and if you turn to the language rotor the
languages will now appear in the order you set, your default language is
always first and then the rest. Please note, this will not make whichever
language you put at the top your default language, this you have to change
 in Settings, International.

 Regards,
 Sieghard

I think this means that your HQ voice hasn't yet downloaded. Plug it into

Hi Sieghard, Thanks for that info. I have changed those settings and when I did
it the phone went quiet and wouldn't do anything for a bit and then British
English came back on. I changed it in the rotor back to US and hope it will
stay that way. Though it still seems to indicate that my default is British

take much effort to change it if it changes itsself back since it's in my

Keyboards: here you can select multiple keyboards and order them in the same

English keyboard and the Emoji keyboard to have easy access to emoticons. By
the way, just noticed you can delete items here by flicking down, i.e. the
 new actions rotor works here.
Region Format: Here you can select your country and this determines how your

the Calendar setting you find a region Format Example which displays how
the date, time and phone numbers are formatted.

I am in Canada, so I have the voice set to just English which means I use
the Samantha HQ voice, I have SIRI set to English Canada and the region
format also to Canada although I think that is pretty much the same as US.
However, if you are in England and want to use Samantha I don't see why you
can't select English as the language instead of British English, then set
SIRI to English UK to make she understands your limy accent *smile* and the
 region format to United Kingdom.

Getting the native dictation function on the iPhone 4S to recognise my name…

2012-07-13 Thread Kirsten Edmondson
Hi,

As many, I love the dictation feature on my iPhone 4S, and I'm using it now.
However, one problem I'm frequently experiencing is that the speech to text
does not recognise how to spell my name accurately. I am in my own contacts, so
I don't really understand why it keeps putting the vowels in the wrong place. I
know it's probably to do with pronunciation, and I guess I need to work out how
it wants me to pronounce my name so that it will put it in correctly, however
it is my name and I pronounce it how I pronounce it. :)
Is there a way of teaching it how I wanted to write it? Is there a way of
making it take it from my address book correctly?

I guess I will just have to write out manually if not, but the thing is, I keep
forgetting, and I keep forgetting to check the spelling, because it sounds
right-ish, so it keeps sending them with incorrect spelling because I have
forgotten to correct it. :)
Should I try to spell it out letter by letter four example?
Thanks

 Hi,

As a matter of course I use the twitter app on my iPhone. I have just

the feed there is a button which takes you to the profile of the person who
tweeted. I've been in settings and help and neither are any good at telling
me how I can get rid of this. The reason I don't like it is that it takes
two swipes to get from one tweet to the next instead of just one. May sound
lazy I know, but it's irritating when you want to get through your tweets
quickly. Can anyone help me either switch this off, so I can literally have
one tweet after the next or help me revert to the previous version?

Rebooting Siri

2012-07-23 Thread Kirsten Edmondson
Hi,
I wanted to restart my Siri earlier to get it working again. I think I remember
reading on here that going into settings and switching it off and on worked to
do this. However, when I went to do it, I was put off by the warning that it
would erase all my server-based data.
Does it really matter if I do this? Was this the method suggested for fixing
Siri?
Thanks
Kirsten

Re: low volume on iphone

2012-07-25 Thread Kirsten Edmondson
Personally, I think this is a bug with iOS 5.1. Try going into sounds in
settings, and swiping the volume down and back up to what you wanted to be and
then exiting, you should find things come back to normal. It hasn't happened to
me for a while, but sometimes it did after I had been in an audio program, such
as audible, or wants voice-over had died. Don't know what it is, and I think it
might only be me who experiences it. But give that a try. Hope it works.

 Hello,

Actually, some apps place the sound output in the earpiece rather than the
iPhone speaker. When running one of these apps and then leaving the app by
pressing home, the command for the iPhone sound to remain in the earpiece
remains active until you do enough tasks that the memory manager closes the
app completely. It is quicker to go in to the app switcher, double-tap and
hold on an app name until you hear VO say editing apps, and then double-tap
the app which has locked your sound in the earphone to remove it from the
 active memory.

Help calling apple please

2012-07-26 Thread Kirsten Edmondson
Hi all,
Is anyone able to tell me how I go about calling Apple? I'm in the UK. I need
to report a problem with my face time, it isn't working properly. And the only
way I can think of resolving it is to call them and ask them. I think I do have
AppleCare, but I have no idea how it works, as I never used it, and cannot read
the information. The AppleCare too is for my Mac, and the problem I am having
with face time is actually on my iPhone, is it still valid?

Really, I would like a phone number in the UK to call, where they might help me.

I know I can email the accessibility, but I would like to speak to a person.
Does anyone have any ideas or know where I could go to find a suitable phone
number?

Thanks
Kirsten

Help! iCloud is making a mess of my iPhone!

2012-07-28 Thread Kirsten Edmondson
Hi all,
Please help!
I have just synced my iPhone and my iPad with iCloud, in preparation for
putting mountain lion on my Mac and using iCloud on that too.
However, I now have two calendar events for future events, but interestingly,
not the past ones. I also have got back many contacts which I deleted in June
when I got my iPhone for S. Not sure how this has happened. But it means I need
to go through and delete and edit all my contacts again!
How can I avoid this happening? Do I just set iCloud to back up my phone and my
iPad? And not check any of the other boxes in the iCloud settings, I. E.
contacts, calendar, notes, ETC?
I have things on my iPad which I want to go onto my iPhone too, and vice versa,
isn't iCloud supposed to insure this happens? It isn't. I am so confused! I'm
scared I'm about to lose everything if I do something wrong! If I uncheck those
boxes, will I lose everything?

Because iTunes is being a pain, and I used to backup with that, which is no
longer working for some reason, hence my use of iCloud now, I don't think I
will have anything to backup from… Help!
Thank you! Any advice much appreciated!
Kirsten

Re: Help! iCloud is making a mess of my iPhone!

2012-07-29 Thread Kirsten Edmondson
Hi, thanks for this continued advice! …
I've got the iPhone right now… And although my contacts are fine on both
devices now, (iPhone and iPad), my iPad calendar is still a mess. Although I
deleted all the extra entries from my iPhone calendar, they don't seem to have
deleted from my iPad calendar even though it's been 24 hours. Although ones
I've added have worked. I have backed up too, to see if that has made a
difference, but it has not. Contrary to what we thought, do I need to go onto
the iPad and delete all the duplicates?
Thanks

My guess is that when you deleted your contacts, you didn't delete them

same contacts and calendar events on both devices.

Question about spam emails

2012-08-21 Thread Kirsten Edmondson
Hi,
Apologies for cross posting but my question is relevant to both lists.
I regularly pull in my email using both mac and iPhone. Though I delete
everything irrelevant based on the subject line and without opening, I am
increasingly noticing an upsurge of spam.
I am trying to move from BT (essentially yahoo) to gmail-which I understand is
much better regarding spam. I am unable to do this currently without sighted
assistance.
Until then, are there any accessible apps or program's I could for mac mail or
iPhone mail that would eradicate such junk?
Thanks.

Jennifer, I did that yesterday, I would just put in one-word answers if you
can and forget about caps etc. I'm not sure why it goes before you have
finished, it does refresh the questions as it has four questions and when
you've chosen one it gives you another four or five questions and so a third
time. The questions are different each time, but it shouldn't refresh until
you've double-tapped the question you want; written in the answer and then
double-tapped 'done'. I found it made my phone run v slowly for a few mins,
so if you can, before you go back to the APP store, empty your app switcher
so you have nothing else running.
Hope you sort it. Not sure why It's suddenly decided to do this and if it's
only for paid apps-I'm sure I'll never remember the answers when I need them.
Also, I forgot, the final step is to put in an email address, this cannot be
the same as your apple one, as I don't have one I didn't do one and it was
fine with this, but if you do have another one, it will use it to email you
 about security issues or something.

audio thesaurous

2012-04-28 Thread Kirsten Edmondson
Hi all,
Weird question perhaps, but is there any-such app for voice-activated
thesaurous? I would like to be able to easily open an app, say a word
(siri/vocal-like) and have VO or a Voice-tt engine give me the various antonyms

Anything like this out there?
Thanks.

retaining podcasts

2012-04-28 Thread Kirsten Edmondson
Hi,
I have some downloads that don't expire and I want to keep. I downloaded them
to my downloads folder on my Mac and put them into ITunes. They transferred
fine to itunes and thus onto my iphone. However, I just synced with itunes, and
despite asking it to sync my podcast files it took them off. They are still on
my itunes but no longer on my phone. What do I need to do to make sure they
always stay on my phone when I sync?
Thanks.

So it's happened to me twice in 24 hours. I was about to email and agree but
decided to slow speech first, only to discover it already at 50% instead of
what I thought of as 65%. I reduxwd it to 40 but can no longer cope with that
slow. I'm fairly certain I have hq American though being in uk Daniel might be
hq Daniel by default. How do I check?
I personally don't think that making the speed down for 48 hrs will be any use
as its more sporadic than that. I'm also not sure that though it seems a long
time that it is really as long as a minute or more.

Converting wma to mp3 and playing on Downcast

2012-05-24 Thread Kirsten Edmondson
Hi all,
First, apologies for the cross posting. I've tried to resolve this problem, but
I can't seem too, can anyone help?
I have four wma files which I now can play on my mac using quick-time/perrien
However, I really want these folders (audio) to transfer to my phone, in a
podcast style. However, I can't change them to mp3 or m4a. When I try to export
them into m4a to subsequently add to itunes on the Mac it says this media must
be corrupted. It's fine. I tried renaming them as mp3 but that didn't work
either. Then I thought that if I tried exporting them from my dropbox app on my
iphone into downcast that might work, but of course, they are still in wma and
I can't get them to play there.
How can I get them into itunes so they will sync to my phone?
How can I get them into mp3 or m4a so I can if nothing else put them through
downcast and dropbox and get them on that way?
Can anyone help? I need simple instructions, cos clearly I can't get it to work
myself ...
Thanks.
Kirsten.

slightly ot, trouble pairing bluetooth keyboards

2012-06-03 Thread Kirsten Edmondson
Hi all,
I am trying to use a mofii x310 bluetooth keyboard with my ipad 2 and iphone
4s. It is pairing fine but it seems to disconnect itself randomly. I'm used to
keyboards staying connected, but this one wants me to put in a pairing code
every few minutes. All the iphone, ipad and keyboard are new to me from today
(though not to iphones and bluetooth keyboars).
I connected it to the ipad first and tried my iphone to see if that had the
same problem. The friend from whom I got the keyboard from says he had no
trouble staying connected to the keyboard. Does anyone know if I'm supposed to
play with some settings on both devices in order to get them constantly
connected or remembered by the devices at least? Does anyone know anything
about this particular brand of keyboard?
Any help and advice much appreciated.
Thanks.
Kirsten.

I'd like to set it up so I could use all devices but have them ultimately in
one place. I waned to use someting like imap I suppose. My main email domain is
a uk btinternet.com email domain. I can't seem to find out if there is
anypossibility of using imap with BT (have been on btyahoo webmail and into
help but can find no mention of imap in help-in fact it implies but does not
explicitly say that it cannot be done). Does anyone have any experience of
using bt imap or if there is another way of having my emails in the way I want
them?
Any info or advice much appreciated!
Thanks

Re: FaceTime on 4s not working

2012-06-04 Thread Kirsten Edmondson
I've checked and can't see anything random, except phone number saying dimmed
after it - did you say this didn't matter? I've discovered I can't FaceTime on
my iPad or iPhone even though they're both set up. I tried turning off both
FaceTime and the devices, but no difference.

On 5 Jun 2012, at 00:54, Veronica Elsea veron...@laurelcreekmusic.com wrote:

Here are a couple of hints about figuring this out.
First, go into settings and look for FaceTime. In mine it's just after phone.
Once you double tap on it, start swiping around and you should find, phone
number to use for video calls, as well as email address. If it says dimmed by
the phone number, that doesn't seem to bbe a ig deal. If it still says
verifying, then you haven't been completely found by the network. I turned
Facetime off, then reset my network settings, then turned Facetime back on
and it found me again. I did not have to enter the number manually. It was so
messy when I was working out the exact same problem that I ended up going
through Apple Care and this is what they had me do. So the simplest thing to
do actually might be to turn Facetime off, restart your phone, then turn
Facetime back on to see if that fixes things. It just might do the trick.
Anyway, hope this is a starting place at least.

Maintaining contacts and calendars question

2012-06-08 Thread Kirsten Edmondson
Hi all,

Probably the answer to this question is quite obvious, but I am seeking your
opinion, because I don't want to do any damage.

I have an MBP, iPad and 4S. I would like my contacts and calendars and notes,
to appear on all of them.

When I just had the Mac and a 3GS, I did not use iCloud. This was really
because when in my windows days a few months back, I wanted to use outlook for
keeping a record of my contacts and calendars etc, iCloud became a massive
duplication. This was very annoying. So I switched off iCloud and left a pc and
then my mac and the iPhone to do their thing.

However, for some reason now, I am having issues syncing my contacts and
calendar properly. I think it must be something to do with my iTunes. Can
anyone help?

I have recently used the multi edit app to sort out and organise my contacts on
my iPhone. These are not transferring to my iPad when I sync with iTunes. It
just has the old ones which have an extra 30 or 40 contacts I do not need.
Also, they are not syncing with my Mac. My address book is the same as it was
last week. Should I change a setting in iTunes? Or should I just use iCloud and
have it sort it all out for me. I'm worried about having duplications again
then. But, my major concern is my calendar, I have everything on there, and I
take it everywhere with me. However, I need it to sync on all the machines so
that wherever I am I have a clear record of what I need to be doing. Is it
likely, because my contacts are not syncing properly, that my calendar is doing
the same?

I am worried that if I use iCloud, I will end up losing everything.

Although iTunes is a pain, I know I can always get things back, if I lose
things, like I did last weekend.

If I use iTunes, what do I need to make sure my settings are in order for it to
work properly? When I checked the sync contacts etc box in iTunes, there are
lots of other checkboxes, and they seem to appear twice, four example notes,
calendar, and contacts, do I need to check them multiple times in order for it
to work properly?

Which is my dominant machine? For example my most up-to-date calendars and
notes and contacts are on my iPhone, but does my Mac think that it is the one
in charge? Is there a way of getting it so that whenever I sync to my iPhone it
replaces it on all of the machines so that that is always the latest version?
Is this what iCloud will do? I am terrified of having multiple different
versions of calendars and contacts et cetera and then ending up with the wrong
set at the wrong time.

What should I do? How do I sort out my settings?

I have sent this to both lists, so sorry for the duplications for people.

Many thanks
Kirsten

I know that version 3 was a bit tricky, but have things improved? Is there any
guidance anywhere on how it works? Do I need to get someone who can see to set
it up for me like you used to need to do?
Thanks

Sorry, yes I do mean that. Dictation. ... Lol. How do I buy books, do I go on

Re: voice-overs speech randomly going quieter was voiceover speech not returning to normal sometimes after ending a call

2012-06-19 Thread Kirsten Edmondson
I get something similar too, it seems to be when perhaps I'm in twitter or
audible. I'm sure there are other apps, I can't think of any. Voice-over
randomly goes very very quiet and the only way to get it to change is to either
restart the phone, although I'm not sure if that works actually,or to go to
the sounds and alter the volume. My volume is always at the same and I always
move up and down so it is back to what it should've been I've also noticed it
has happened when I have used the quick key/to get voice-over back, the lock
key six or seven times, which returns voice-over after having disappeared, but
seems to make voice-over very quiet.

I have only noticed this in the last few weeks, not at the same time is getting
5.1. So I don't know what's causing it or if it's part of the same voice-over
bug.

Sometimes their is a lag between when the person hangs up and, when the call
 disconnects.
When that happens hit the end button.
The quality of VoiceOver will return to Norma.

Apple TV and AirPlay

2012-12-21 Thread Kirsten Edmondson
Hi, does anyone know when you have an album playing on your iPhone and rooted
to play through Apple TV, is there no way of stopping the Apple TV reading out
each track as it starts to play? At the moment, when I route it through Apple
TV the volume of the music is quite low, the only way to increase it as I can
see at the moment, is to turn up the TV itself. However, this means that when
every track starts, voice-over says extremely loudly, the name of each track
and the album. It is very annoying and I am worried it is so loud that it might
be heard by others in my block of flats. Can I stop voice-over telling me
through the Apple TV what is now playing?
Thanks

Question about the native music app

2013-01-03 Thread Kirsten Edmondson
Hi, I have a bit of a random question to ask about when using the native music
app on an iPhone 4s. For some reason every single album and song I have ever
bought has loaded itself onto my iPhone even though I have removed some of them
in the past-Not sure exactly when this was, as have only just seen it. I have
bought albums on a combination of devices including ipod shuffle, iPhone 3gs
and now my current iPhone as mentioned above. I have used this phone since June
and work from icloud as I have an iPhone, ipad and a Mac and want them all to
have the same stuff on. I no longer use itunes on my Mac as it always gives me
problems, instead I use it on my iPhone to directly download music, and on my
apple tv to download movies and tv programs. The actual problem I am having,
since all my extra albums have reappeared, albums I do not want to remove from
my library but do not currently want on my iPhone, is that for several of these
albums, the actions menu and thus the delete button will not come up. I have
searched through the rota to no avail. Neither will it work properly if I hold
and swipe as used to be the delete gesture in the music app. How can I get rid
of these albums yet keep them in my library? Will icloud keep putting them back
when I backup every night? Is it because for the majority of these albums I had
them on a different device previously? Any help here would be appreciated! I am
amazed I haven't yet run out of room on the iPhone, but think I May run out
soon if I can't overwrite some of my existing music. By the way, I don't have
itunes match and don't want it either! Thanks.

Reducing the amount of music on my iPhone

2013-07-14 Thread Kirsten Edmondson
I have certain albums on my iPhone which will not delete through the actions
menu. Neither will it work to delete them using the tap and hold and slide
method. They just will not go. I think some of this is to do with iCloud but I
cannot get into my recent iCloud backup to delete them from there. A lot of
them came originally from my iPod shuffle, or my previous iPhone, and I don't
know if this has anything to do with it, although other things from a similar
time period will delete no problem. I was wondering if, to save effort, and
because I have hardly any space left on my iPhone and would like to make some,
if I went into Usage, storage, music and selected delete all if I could then go
into iTunes and re-download only the ones I want. I know this may sound
time-consuming, but I'm prepared to do that if it will work. To clarify, I
would like to go into the usage part of the settings and delete all the music
on my iPhone. I would then go into the iTunes app into purchases and download
the ones I wanted on my iPhone. Does this sound like it would work?
I don't know why delete does not work for me and some of these albums, but it
is pretty continuous. I have tried at least for the last year.
Tia

Subject: Review of Fujitsu Scansnap iX500 Sheetscanner and Scansnap app

 Hello List,

I just purchased a Fujitsu Scansnap iX500 scanner for my business and wanted
to briefly mention/review it since it is capable of scanning directly to an
iOS device wirelessly via the Scansnap app which is available for free in the
 app store, see link:

 https://itunes.apple.com/ca/app/scansnap-connect-application/id464728181?mt=8

This is not a solution for everybody since the iX500 is $500, it still is on
sale right now at www.MemoryExpress.com in Canada for $439.95.

The iX500 is a Sheetscanner (no flatbed) with a very small footprint, it can
scan double sided pages in one pass at a rate of 25 pages per minute and has
an impressive feature set. Here is a link to the Scansnap iX500:

 http://scanners.fcpa.fujitsu.com/scansnap11/iX500.html

I installed the scanner yesterday and it was very straight forward. The
initial setup has to be done on the computer and I believe this scanner would
not work with something like Openbook directly since it uses its own driver
instead of a standard TWAIN driver. One could of course scan the image and
then import and recognize the image in Openbook.
After I connected it to my WiFi I opened the app on my iPhone 4S and the
scanner was immediately recognized. As soon as I opened the app, Jaws now
says “Connection of iX500 has been switched to the mobile device”.
If I put a page or for that matter up to 50 pages into the paper infeed tray
and then tap the scan button in the app which, by the way appears to be fully
accessible, the scanner starts feeding pages through at a rate of just over 2
seconds a page. The scanned file then appears in the file list of the app and
it has a default name that is the current date and time. When I double tapped
on the file the “Open In” dialogue popped up and I was able to open the scan
in Prizmo and recognize it… beautiful.
As soon as I exit the app Jaws says “iX500 is ready to scan” which means it
has disconnected from the app and is once again ready to scan to the PC.

The primary use of that scanner at my business is to scan all paperwork,
invoices, statements and so on since I only keep digital copies and no paper
copies. Typically my staff does this, but on the PC it is also very simple, I
can just put a page or pages in the tray, press the scan button on the
scanner and the pages are scanned. At the end a screen pops up and I can
select to Save to a Folder, send the scan to email, send it to the printer
(for photocopying) or I can directly to applications like Word, Excel etc.
The Save to Folder function is simple, it shows a Save As dialogue with the
default file name (date and time) which can be edited, then there is a Browse
button where I can select the folder where I want to save the scan. Once I

You can even feed embossed cards like credit cards through the feeder and it
will take paper as small as a business card and as wide as 8.5. For really
small or flimsy receipts the scanner comes with a carrier sheet. It consists
of 2 transparent sheets of thin plastic which are glued together only at the
short top edge. You put the receipt in between and then feed the carrier
sheet through with the laminated edge going in first… once again brilliant
and there is no need to use a glue stick and glue a small piece of paper onto
a bigger piece so you can feed it through the scanner.

Fujitsu even makes a portable Scansnap which is not much bigger than a large
role of Saran wrap in its cardboard box and which I think costs $200, but
it’s USB only. If they came out with a new model which maybe could use
Bluetooth to connect to the phone and hence the Scansnap app, this would be
the ultimate portable scanning solution except of course if it is

Accessibility/readability of google books

2013-07-23 Thread Kirsten Edmondson
When I refer here, in the subject line, to accessibility or readability of
Google books, I do not mean Google play books or any other related e-books.
Google books seem to be set and I believe are either pictorial
representations/graphical representations of the books and therefore are
unreadable to screen readers such as voice-over. I have found a book I am
desperately seeking but it is only available on Google books, andnot in any
other format. Before I give up on it, I wanted to see if anybody has had any
experiences of being able to read these books? Often, you canget a
Previous page button and next page button but it does not seem to speak any of
the actual text on the pages. This is my experience both with jawsand with VO
on my iPhone. I just thought I'd check to see if anybody has had any different
experiences.
Thanks in advance.

Re: Talking Goggles again?

2013-07-27 Thread Kirsten Edmondson
I am personally getting particularly fed up by the insinuations, which
certainly, Richard andSiegard Have been making more than once today that people
were merely complaining. Yesterday's thread was for a lot of people the way of
establishing, as Christopher put it so well, that there was a problem. In the
messages I read, and certainly in the messages that I posted, there were no
complaints. Merely a gratitude that our issue had been confirmed. Some of us,
clearly had more time than others, if we can complain about suppose it
complaints!
Please stop the bitching! We have established it does not work, we are working
as a community, which is what we are meant to be doing on this list, and we
have established that the issue will be resolved in time. I, personally, do not
want to read any more complaints about people complaining. As that is
pointless and has not actually occurred anyway in this instance.

Re: Bad experience with iTunes Store support regarding app refund

2013-08-02 Thread Kirsten Edmondson
Sieghard, It's rough that you've had this sort of response, and even more odd
that you haven't had the refund and you haven't been able to get hold of anyone
else. I wonder, is iTunes country specific at all? I think I always assumed it
was central, but I wonder if that's what makes a difference. Personally, I've
never attempted to get a refund. I once had a situation where a newsstand
magazine was not accessible, I contacted the developer and they told me they
had no intention of making it accessible and that I would need to contact
iTunes. It was only £1.99 or something so I decided, on that occasion, not to
bother. I totally understand your frustration though particularly as we know
that many other people on this list have had successful refunds.
I am particularly intrigued by the way you have been dealt with, it really does
seem at odds with the whole of Apple's policy. I thought they were always very
into voice-over and although they don't make it as easy as on the Mac to make
apps accessible, I thought that they were quite on our side. I really think
this woman seems not to have bothered to read your email or to understand the
implication. The very fact that she talks about you checking the description is
crazy, we all know that accessibility is not mentioned in descriptions and
that is something a lot of people have campaigned for… I really think this must
be some sort of generic response. That is a shame, and again, Apple have, in
the past, been quite good with personal service. That is why I wonder if it is
country specific. I cannot comment like I said, as I haven't had any refunds, I
wonder if there is somewhere higher you can go? Someone more in management?
I hope you get this sorted. You are someone who usually takes the plunge and
checks out lots of these apps for which we are all very grateful for all your
feedback, it is a shame that you, and others like you, will now be put off
doing this because it is too much of a risk and too expensive! I don't normally
advocate for android, but I believe that they have a refund policy of 15
minutes where if you don't like it or it isn't accessible or just generally
don't want it within the first 15 minutes, you can get your money back. Apple
are missing a big trick in not doing something similar. And as we are people
who really and truly advocate for apple and the accessibility of the products,
Apple are also digging themselves into a hole if they are going to start being
funny now. I'm sure this is just one person! Hopefully… But the fact that it
has happened at all is worrying.

I liked best. I have been using Track This which is awesome, but I am in
Canada and for some reason they don’t support Purolator and CanPar which are
both major carriers here. I contacted Track This support twice and never

Anyhow, back to iTunes Store support. I provided all the information
including order numbers, purchase date, my Apple Id etc. I explained how I
really enjoyed my iPhone and the fantastic accessibility, but that
unfortunately these two apps I purchased were not voiceover friendly and
there was no Light version offered which I could have tried first. I also
mentioned that I contacted both developers and after almost a week had not
received a reply. In short, I was friendly, explained everything and even
waited to see if the developers would reply to see if they were willing to
 make Voiceover improvements.

I received a prompt reply in which the agent explained that all app sales are
final, but that given the situation they would refund me the $6.72 or
whatever it was for the 2 apps. However, she also continued to give me links
as to their terms and conditions and said that this was a one-time curtocy
and that in the future they could not provide any more refunds and that it
was up to me to make sure I didn’t turn on one-click ordering and accidently
purchase apps or read the app description to be sure it was what I wanted. It
was strange because all of this gave me the impression this person did not at
all get the point about Voiceover and all that, but on the other hand she
said they would give me a refund given the situation. According to what she
said I should see the refund back on my account within 48 hours and since
both apps were purchased using store credit it would come back as store

Talking Goggles – thank you

2013-08-06 Thread Kirsten Edmondson
Dear sparkling apps,
Thank you so very much for updating talking Goggles. I know due to various
things which were beyond your control during the last week, you had to work
quite hard to make the app available to us and accessible again. I know many
people who love this app and I am one of them! I am so glad it is once again
working.
As well as emailing to thank you, I thought I'd better try the app just before
I did send this. I found I could not get it to work, even though I had done the
update. I uninstalled it and reinstalled it and that has made it work again. I
don't know if anyone else has experienced the same thing, but I thought I'd
better let you know. I suspect that the update didn't work properly, I'm sure
this is probably down to either my iPhone or Apple. But I wanted to make you
aware of it all the same.
It is now working perfectly!
Thank you.

How do you rate/review apps in the App Store?

2013-08-08 Thread Kirsten Edmondson
As subject says really. I can't remember and I can't seem to find out how to
buy going into the App Store. I want to rate a few apps like Alarmed and
TapTapSee and goggles. But I just can't find out how… LOL

Twitterrific five…

2013-08-09 Thread Kirsten Edmondson
Dear all, I'm currently having issues with Twitterrific five, in that it is
extremely slow to load and it often crashes when I try to reply to mentions or
DMs. I checked out the help section of the app, and found that it would be
advisable to clear my cash. This seems to be my problem. However the
instructions given were quite visual, and I found it, impossible to do with
voice-over. I contacted the developer, and their response is below. Although
it is a minimal response, it does show that they continue to be aware of us. So
I thought I would forward just in case anyone else has a similar issue.

You cannot clear the cache using voice over I'm afraid (a design flaw that is
on the list to improve). If you can get a sighted friend to help you with the
procedure, it should greatly improve refresh times on the app. Wish I had
better instructions for you but I don't right now. Let me know, thanks.

Re: Alerts during a call?

2013-08-12 Thread Kirsten Edmondson

Am I the only person who remembers a time when an alert sound would sound but
voice-over did not read out the message while you were in a call?
Perhaps there was some ability to do this which now does not exist, I think
though that it was just the way things worked back then, whenever then is that
I remember.
Am I also the only person who, whilst in a call, does not seem to be able to
get triple home to work to turn voice-over off, even though it will do it in
every other time. Often, I cannot turn speech off with the finger gesture
either. My phone when I take it away from my ear, does a funny click buzz clunk
sound and therefore does not do the usual thing. I seem to remember that this
was an issue with iOS six…? That people have complained on this list in the
past that they cannot turn voice-over off while on a call. I am not talking
about turning it off permanently, I am talking about stopping it Reading
alerts. And I totally agree with the likes of Sieghard ETC, that there should
be a setting in the settings which asks you whether you whether you would like
it to read out an alert during a call. I don't have a problem with this at any
other time, but I was leaving a voicemail for somebody last week and I could
not stop it, even by tapping the screen as you would normally, from reading out
the entire, very long, text message while I was trying to leave my voicemail.
This meant the person on the other end, to whom I was leaving a message, also
heard my text message which might be personal to me or even been about them!
why is that fair? Why can there not be an option to turn off? No one else has
that issue.
I love voice over. But as I said, I'm pretty certain it didn't always do this.
It is only recently this has started to annoy me so I find it very interesting
that someone else has brought up on the list at the very time I am thinking
about it and have been thinking about emailing Apple. I'm glad to know that
others have done so before me. I am not so glad that like so many other things,
Apple have not been able to fix it yet.
I shall write imminently.

 HiChuck,

Of course I want Voiceover to announce who is calling, but as soon as I
answer the call I'd like it to shut up. Turning off speech is a work-around
and it's OK as far as it goes, but as I said, if I am out and about I either
have my Bluetooth earpieceor the Apple Earpods hanging around my neck and I
answer calls that way without ever touching the phone and if it's tucked
away then having to turn off speech is not convenient. There are of course
also those cases where I need speech to be on because maybe I need to look
up a phone number while I am on a call or check something else. As I said, I
am fully aware of the work-arounds, but just because I found an often
inconvenient fix for a problem doesn't mean it's a solution and that the
 problem should not be addressed.
I also can say for sure that from the responses I read in previous
discussions there are way more people who like Tess, Donna, myself and
others feel this is an annoying issue as opposed to the few who said they
like it the way it is. I think it's OK to hear whatever sound an incoming
email, text or push notification makes and if I am really so desperate to
know while I am still talking on the phone who emailed or texted me, then I
can open mail, messages or the notification centre and check. Otherwise I
can concentrate on who I am talking to and once I am done I can check what
happened while I was on the phone.

 Sieghard

Re: jotting things down in lists over a period of time and sending the whole list

2013-08-15 Thread Kirsten Edmondson
I was going to suggest the same thing as lisa. But, remember, you can always
dictate your note like you would with any other field you can edit. Or, of
course, you could write in Fleksy and paste the text into notes.
I use notes quite often over a long period. For example, to write down
information for my doctor about my condition on different days. Or, to monitor
and keep an accessible record of my guide dog's weight, so I return to this
every six months and add a new date and weight at the bottom of the list. The
great advantage of using the built in app is that it syncs between my devices
and can also be kept in Icloud. And you can share it with yourself or someone
else via email and maybe text too if you need to.

Re: VO issues when on a call-was Triple Click VO off during a call

2012-10-29 Thread Kirsten Edmondson
Hi,
I tried to do this last night while on a call to my mum, to stop it reading out
a text I was receiving. But though it didn't turn off VO and it did put it to
speaker for a few seconds, something even more weird happened: It kept doing
this buz/click type thing, and it did it over and over again intermitently
during my call. My mum noticed it too, she said it sounded like I was being cut
off/dropping out of the call.
I have noticed this same sound when a call connects, IE. when I answer a call,
or just before a call I am ringing is connected. It is something new with ios6
(running on a 4S), does anyone else get this? It seems impossible to turn VO
off during a call now-I will have to resort to the speech off gesture instead.

Pages on Ios question

2012-11-05 Thread Kirsten Edmondson

wondered if you could answer a couple of questions for me.
Is it possible to use the dictate function when working in Pages?
When a document is saved, is it possible to rename it so it can be given a more

Found another iOS 6.01 bug can anyone confirm?

2012-11-10 Thread Kirsten Edmondson
Hi, I noticed this the other day and was wondering if anybody could confirm it
before I email apple. I'm not sure when it started so can't guarantee that it
wasn't in iOS six, but pretty certain it didn't happen in five. If on your home
screen you swipe to mail, and you've got new messages ,it used to put the
number beside it, four example it would say mail five new items. Now, even
though I know I have new email, when I swipe to the icon, it just says mail,
and does not say how many items. I have not noticed this with other things such
as phone messages twitter Facebook etc, in fact, they do all put the number
beside, such as Messages one. So it seems odd mail doesn't seem to do that too
any more.
Has anyone noticed this too?
Thanks.

 Hi Kirsten,

You must have somehow accidently turned off the badge App Icon. To check
this, go to Settings, Notifications and Mail. Now go into your mail
account and swipe past where you turn on and off Notification Centre and
where you set the type of alert style.
After that Voiceover will say Badge App Icon and this will be followed by
On or Off. This determines whether the number of unread messages are
shown on the Mail Badge Icon, if it is off turn it on and all will work as
 usual.

Dictation on an iPad 3,

2012-11-30 Thread Kirsten Edmondson
Hi,
I have a student who has an iPad 3, we are just setting it up at the moment,
and although dictation is on according to the general and keyboard settings, I
can't get it to work. I have an iPad two myself, which doesn't have dictation,
so I'm not sure if I'm missing something. On the iPhone it's in Siri, but there
doesn't seem to be a Siri menu on the iPad 3. Is there no Siri on the iPad 3? I
really thought there was. If not, you are not able to launch apps like you can
on the iPhone? Why might dictation not be working even though it's on? Is
there something else I need to do? It's on a Wi-Fi network, so there shouldn't
be any problems with the Internet or anything and the Apple servers etc.
Anyone's help would be greatly appreciated
We've tried it with both voice-over on and voice-over off, to see if that makes
a difference, but it doesn't seem to.

Thanks

Re: Dictation on an iPad 3,

2012-12-02 Thread Kirsten Edmondson
Well this does not answer my question. It is an iPad 3, it has iOS 6.1, why is
dictation not working? Thank you, I know where the dictation button is. Why is
there no Siri menu, if Siri does indeed exist on the iPad 3 in iOS 6.1? What do
I need to switch on, off, update, ETC in order to get it all to work properly?
Thank you

Those of you in the UK know that at present there has been a campaign for
Talking Cash machines which are available in some branches of other banks and
as far as I know is available in the USA.

So, however, I happened to be talking to a representitive of HSBC Bank where
I bank. He told me that at the moment, rather than concentrating on making
these cash machines accessible for it's disabled visually impaired customers,
they are trialing anew app designed for the I phone and I pad and it's being
trialed in the US due to their customer base being low.

So am wondering if any one is trialing this app especially for Voice Over in
the US? I am asking this because their last application called Fast Balance
was not accessible with Voice Over and I hope their new application will not
 suffer the same fate.

I would appreciate any information from anyone to tell me that this app is
 being trialed and proving successful.

 Thank you in advance.

Re: Fast Balance - Was Re: New HSBC APP

2012-12-14 Thread Kirsten Edmondson
I think I found it by searching for HSBC in the App Store. It might be UK only
of course though. I think it only came up with the name fast balance once you
had downloaded, you know, one of those apps that changes its name annoyingly.
It doesn't do much really, tells you how much you have, and gives you a few
transactions I think, the last five. Apparently you can top up your phone with
it, but I don't need to do that stuff never tried. The other annoying thing
about it is, I have an HSBC credit card and I can't see how much I have on
that. You can't do any transactions in anything or make any payments, but you
can see what has come in and out of your bank very recently. To make it really
worth while though, you have to check regularly, every two days maybe depending
on the amount of action in your bank of course.

Re: flash, searching on internet

2013-04-06 Thread Kirsten Edmondson
This may sound like a rather naive question, but I never knew before that you
could use flash on iOS, so I am seriously going to investigate the apps on the
below link. However, a lot of what was referred to on the website was video and
photos, is it also possible to use these apps to read magazines that are in
flash content four example?

 Hi Pablo,

You don’t have to Jailbreak your phone to use websites with flash content.
The Photon browser which you can download in the app store supports flash.

Keep in mind that I never tried it, I heard about it on the Today in iOS
Podcast and since I couldn’t remember the name I just did a quick Google
 search for the following:

iOS internet browsers with flash support

The second search result had the following title, the link follows:

Top Flash-Enabled Browsers for the iPhone
 http://ipod.about.com/od/bestiphoneapps/tp/Top-iPhone-Flash-Browsers.htm

The person who posted this writes “Some people claim that because the iPhone
doesn't support Flash, you can't get the full Internet on it. But with these
apps--all of which claim to bring Flash to the iPhone--that's no longer true.
The question, of course, isn't whether they can play Flash, but whether they
can play it well enough to make it usable. That's a different story.”

Following that is a list of apps you can download which are browsers that
support flash. I guess you just have to experiment not only how well they
handle flash, but also to their accessibility. You can always check
www.applevis.com to see if any of the browsers mentioned have been reviewed
 on Applevis.

 Good luck,
