Re: Eyetv3

2015-05-16 Thread Brian Scott
Hi Bill,

When I had issues with my Eyetv3 Elgato suggested I use their software to
uninstall it before re-installing.

Anyway, this was their reply ..

Daniel Landsberg replied:
Brian,

Thank you for contacting Elgato Systems.

We are sorry to hear that you are having issues with your Elgato EyeTV 3
Software.

First, let's uninstall EyeTV, so you can install it again. Before you uninstall
the software, make sure that you have your EyeTV Activation Key, you will need
this to re-install the software. If you are unable to locate your Activation
Key, you may be able to retrieve it here:

http://help.elgato.com/customer/portal/articles/1139745-i-need-help-with-my-eyetv-activation-key?b_id=360

Once you have located your Activation Key, we have a special utility, called
EyeTV Reporter, that can help you with the uninstall process, you can download
it here:

http://help.elgato.com/customer/portal/articles/1139576-how-do-i-use-the-eyetv-reporter-utility-?b_id=360

First, please complete the Easy - Backup Preferences section, so your basic
settings will be saved, just in case. Then, the Easy - Uninstall section will
give you the necessary instructions on how to complete the uninstall.

Finally, you can download EyeTV again from here, if necessary:

http://www.elgato.com/en/eyetv/eyetv-3/support/update

Launch it to start the installation process.

Once this is complete, let's repair the Disk permissions.

Open Applications Utilities Disk Utilities
In Disk Utility, select the disk in the list.
Click First Aid.
Click Repair Disk Permissions to test and repair permissions.

If this does not resolve your issues, we would like you to send us more
information about your Mac and its setup. You can do this using the EyeTV
Reporter Utility.

In the Advanced section, we would like you to select all items under sections
A-F, then press Next.

After you send us the information, please respond to this email and let me know
that they were uploaded, so I can have a technician start to analyze them.
Thank you,

Re: compressed pst file

2012-02-12 Thread Brian Scott
A search on http://download.cnet.com/mac/ found some converters.

PST Converter Pro for Mac looks good, though it's $19
http://download.cnet.com/PST-Converter-Pro/3000-2369_4-75449744.html

I can't vouch for any of them as I'm never likely to acquire pst files.

Is there anything free or low cost available on the mac to

 Hi Brian,

Do you use an Epson Printer? What OS X are you running Snow Leopard
 or Lion?

This is similar to a question from Merv I replied to on 18 December
2011, Re: Printer monitor spontaneously launches.

What I think is happening in your case is.
Your Console message is indicating Launchd is looking for the file
 at location:
 /Library/Printers/EPSON/ InkjetPrinter/EPW/IJEPWAgent.app/Contents/
 MacOS/IJEPWAgent”
It doesn’t find it (as I presume it isn’t there), so you receive “No
 such file or directory”

If this is the case, locate this file com.epson.epw.agent.plist and
make a copy of it and put the copy someplace safe, then delete the
original .plist file and Reboot your computer.

 Look in:
 HD Library LaunchAgents com.epson.epw.agent.plist

Look also in HD Library LaunchDaemons com.epson.epw.agent.plist

If this solves your problem, trash the copy.

As an aside, remember that the .plist extension means the file is a
property list, which refers to the file's form, not it's function.
Many .plist files are not found in Preference folders and are not
preference files - they will not be automatically re-created if
deleted. The files used by launchd to create launch daemons and
launch agents are in this category - they are in property list
format and so have .plist extensions, but they are not preference
files. The info.plist files inside application bundles are not
 preference files either.

Re: WD FW800 HDD won't work with iMac anymore but will with MacMini

2011-10-05 Thread Brian Scott
Hi Ronni,

My iMac isn't very old ( 24-inch Early 2008, 3.06 GHz Intel Core Duo).

I'd like to sell it before the AppleCare runs out on it but I prefer
it to the new iMacs.

Although I guess I could get used to a new one.

It runs Tiger, the MacMini has Leopard and my MacAir has Tiger.

The USB drive holds my music and is often turned off until I need it,
it comes off my
keyboard as does my marble mouse.

Now I have removed the FW400 drive from the hub (which is not powered)
only the
keyboard and printer are now attached to it, and occasionally my camera.

The iMac's USB inputs are taken up by EyeTV, an external burner and
the hub.

Cheers
Brian

What are the specs of your iMac, how old etc?
You have a few devices coming from the Hub, plus your Two FW 800
 Drives connected to the iMac.

That’s quite a load on your iMac each time it wakes from sleep.
You might have too many high power devices demanding more power
through the ports than the iMac can accommodate.

WD FW800 HDD won't work with iMac anymore but will with MacMini

2011-10-03 Thread Brian Scott
Hi,

I've had these two WD drives (4 TB 2 TB) hooked up (daisy-chained)
to my iMac 24 for a while now.

First yesterday I couldn't access some second level directories now I
get this warning from
'About This Mac/firewire' - FireWire Bus: Warning:Unable to list
FireWire devices.
even when they are plugged in individually.

That's on the iMac, on the MacMini both drives work fine.

I get the same result when I start the iMac in Safe Mode.

The iMac's OS is 10.5.8 - the MacMini's OS 10.6.8.

Both the 2 TB and 4 TB have the File System: Journaled HFS+.

Both are called My Book though the 4 TB has 3 partitions. (each
drive's info is listed below)

I've only hooked them up to the MacMini individually incase I loose
access to them altogether.

I had a similar problem with them about a month ago but a PRAM reset
brought things right again,
it doesn't help anymore.

I took computer (not the drives) into NextByte where they ran some
tests on it and
hooked up a laptop to it via FW800 with no problems and declared the
iMac to have no
issues.

Is there a way of getting my iMac to recognize these drives again?

Thanks
Brian Scott

Re: Text-recognition software recommendation

Hi Ray,

You could look at ABBYY FineReader Express.

Works on Mac OS X 10.4 PPC/Intel/10.5 PPC/Intel/10.6 Intel

I'm still on OS 10.5.8.

I've been using it on old newspaper scans and it works quite well,
it's the only OCR program I've used so i can't

compare it another.

Cheers

Unfortunately, OmniPage SE is a Power-PC only application. The

OmniPage for MacOS 10. It seems that they now only support Widows.

I do realise that one solution would be to have two disk partitions;
one with MacOS 10.7, and one with MacOS 10.6, and booting to the
older one when I want to run legacy applications. However, it would
be nice to avoid such inefficiency.

Hi Brian,

There isn't a shortcut for Maximise as there is no Maximise
function in Mac OS--never has been.

You can create a shortcut for Zoom by using the Keyboard Shortcuts
pane of the Keyboard System Preferences.
Add a new Shortcut, set it for all applications, type Zoom into
the Menu Title field, and pick a key combination.

I think you have to quit an restart any open applications, but that
may have been fixed.

Ronni

iTunes update failed

Hi,

I was notified that iTunes has an update so I went ahead with it as

But half way through the upgrade script failed giving this message ..

The following install step failed: run upgrade

Any clues what I should do?

The software manufacturer could be hard to contact so I thought I'd

Re: Mail problem

2010-09-14 Thread Brian Scott

Hi,

I'm not sure if this is relevant to the troubles people have been
experiencing - perhaps all ISPs are performing modem firmware upgrades.

I got this from Optus this morning ..

Optus is introducing the capability to upgrade the firmware in your
DSL Direct modem remotely.

What is firmware?

Optus is introducing the capability to upgrade the firmware in your
DSL Direct modem remotely.

What is firmware?

Firmware is the programme that makes your modem function and
communicate between the Optus network and your computer. Modem
manufacturers only release updated firmware as improvements and
changes are needed. Updates are intended to improve the way modems
communicate with our network, so it's key that you are using the most
up to date firmware to maximise your modem's performance on our network.

This capability will allow Optus to improve the stability, security
and performance of your modem by installing the latest firmware from
your modem manufacturer directly to your modem.

The most common scenario where firmware would be upgraded is to
address newly discovered security flaws or defects.

When Optus performs a remote upgrade you probably won't be aware of
it. Your service will be interrupted for a few minutes, however we'll
schedule upgrades at a time to minimise impact to your use of the
Optus Broadband service.

If your modem uses the settings specified and recommended by Optus
these will be restored after any upgrade. If you have custom settings
in your modem these may be overwritten and you will need to restore
them yourself.

Optus strongly recommends you take advantage of this great new
capability. To participate you don't have to do anything. However, if
you don't wish to participate in remote firmware updates you can opt-
out here.

If you do choose to opt out Optus technical support will of course
continue to offer the same customer focused support of your service
and modem.

Regards,

The Optus team

Cheers

Hi World Cup football fans,

Elgato have built in a filter you can switch on or off to take out the

I've tried it and it's quite effective.

Go here to get the free update..

There is also a quick demonstration.

It seems more effective on my system than in the demo.

Re: Problems with EyeTV

2010-04-16 Thread Brian Scott

Hi Noel,

I'm in Subiaco and have the EyeTV Diversity and channel 9 get %100 for
strength and quality

and SBS gets %96 Strength and %100 quality.

Just a thought, I don't know your TV situation but my fairly new LCD
can report strength and quality.

If your TV has that ability you could compare it with EyeTV.

The faults that come to mind with my EyeTV are:

• Sometimes EyeTV pretends channels aren't available and the only fix
seems to be to quit EyeTV and restart it.

• And sometimes in Edit mode I'll have frames off to the left of the
beginning that I can't access.

• Also I remember a time when EyeTV could start a recording without
waking the computer screen but now the screen always comes on.

Hopefully future updates will sort these out.

Cheers

Brian

no pixelating etc. Also, I don't believe the problem is tied up with
my (new roof-mounted) antenna, since with the EyeTV tuner you get a

92.5% signal strength, but signal quality=0%.

Re: Why 100% signal strength but 0% signal quality?
http://forums.elgato.com/viewtopic.php?f=86t=3157
It's possible to have a strong signal, but one that afflicted is with
multipath distortions (signal bouncing around off various external
objects such as trees and buildings, each arriving at a slightly
different time)this is a poor quality, but strong signal.
It's also why your strength may go from 100 to 0 in a split
second...trees moving in the breeze can cause this...or an airplane
crossing your signal path.
If I remember correctly quality is a measurment of bitrate
receivedbut if I'm wrong I'm sure someone will correct me on that.

have been unable to schedule and effect EyeTV recordings of TV

-- Under Program Guide, I had around 20 channels which showed up and
from which programs could normally be recorded by clicking on the
right button. With the change, most of these schedules did not

ran Autotune to pick up available channels, and it first found
only 5
SBS signals plus WTV (Channel 44, a new Perth station). Of these,

WTV would show a live program, SBS only says 'No Signal'.

EyeTV application, and carried out all their suggestions, including
downloading their latest app version [3.3.3 (6040)]. without any
improvement. They suggested I check PreferencesDevicesSignal, this
showed Signal Quality of 100%, Signal Strength 0% (latter should be
60%+).

-- I've also tried another identical-model tuner (no difference),
tried another coax connection to a splitter upstairs (feeds the iMac
and an analogue TV, which gives OK pictures), and taking the whole
thing downstairs to another coax outlet (normally feeding a digital
TV, excellent pictures), all without any getting anything solved.
Upstairs and downstairs both get their signal from a new antenna
which

feeds to GME Ringray MHW24G grey box, thence to the main
(upstairs/downstairs) splitter.

-- I guess the main indicator is that the Signal Strength is 0%
(sometimes up to 20%, no more). Any ideas, anyone?

text files turning into executables after copying to PC Thumb drive

2010-02-10 Thread Brian Scott

Hi,

I have an 8 G thumb drive formated to MS-DOS (FAT32), when I copy a
plain
text file (no .txt extension) to it the text file becomes a Unix
Executable file when it gets there.

Text files with extensions e.g. .rtf .txt remain unchanged.

Is there some quick way of getting these pseudo executable files on
the thumb drive

to turn back into text files.

Or must I put an extension all my plain text files before transferring
them.

I'd like to keep the TD MS-DOS (FAT32) so it can be accessed on a PC.

TIA

Brian

Is this some graphics controller fault on my PowerBook ?

2009-12-12 Thread Brian Scott

Hi,

I was was about to setup EYeTV to record a show yesterday when my
screen started
getting a mess/mesh of dots and lines. Not just on the PowerBook 15
but on my TV (CRT)

that it is connected to also.

The external HDD started unexpectedly removing itself invoking Device
Removal warnings.

This happened not long after upgrading some system software and
repairing permissions.

It's has OS 10.4.11

When I started it this morning it was clear until I moved the PB
screen to view it better.

But moving it again doesn't make it clear.
And it wasn't movement that made it go off the first time or other
times.

I've tried re-setting PRAM, removing everything connected to it and
replacing the ram module but it made no difference.

From the Preferences the screen details are Model: 9C20 and
Manufacture Date: B87B9680

See a picture of the faulty screen here..

Has my PowerBook become useless or can it be easily fixed?

Hi,

This won't be the problem here but I thought I'd pass it on any way as
has to do with hot CPU's.

Firefox has a CPU usage issue and, consequently, can cause
overheating problems in some laptops, particularly ultraportables.
That's what I've found over the last couple of years.

...
More specifically, here's the behavior as I see it. When I'm accessing
sites with multimedia content such as the CNET front door, Firefox CPU
usage will bounce around between 30 and 60 percent, and sometimes
spike higher (80 percent and above), as indicated by the Mac OS 10.6.2
Activity Monitor.
On the other hand, the Safari CPU usage with the same pages open is
much lower--typically between 2 percent and 10 percent.

...
The fan is usually an audible indicator of CPU usage issues. When I'm
using Firefox and I have tabs open on multimedia-rich sites (which is
par for the course these days), the [MacBook] Air's fan will almost
invariably kick on and stay on until I close the tabs.

Obviously the external is a more capable creature.

Hi Brian,

There is a lot of difference between an Apple Airport Wireless
Network and an Ad-Hoc (Computer-to-Computer) Network! They are very
different.
Just quickly, as I really don't have time to spend more on this
subject.

An Airport Wireless Network uses an Airport Express or Airport
Extreme which are Base Stations, Wi-Fi Routers or Access
Points that all the connections are done through. In a Wireless
Network, a central 'node' which is called a 'base station' or
'access point' exists in the Network that all the connections are
done through this central node.
After your AirPort Express or Airport Extreme is set up, computers
access the Internet via the AirPort Network.
Your AirPort Express or Airport Extreme connects to the Internet and
transmits information to all the computers over the AirPort Network.

Up to 10 Computers can connect to an Airport Express Wi-Fi
(wireless) Network, and have fast Internet connection, access hard
drives, print wirelessly.
Up to 50 Computers can connect to an Airport Extreme Wi-Fi
(wireless) Network, and have fast Internet connection, access hard
drives, print wirelessly.

If any of the computers on the Airport Wireless Network, shutdown or
sleep, all other computers are still connected to the Network.

With an Ad-Hoc or Computer-to-Computer wireless Network, If the
Gateway Mac (in your case the iMac) is turned off or asleep, the
other computers can't connect to the Network ... the Network is your
iMac.

I have setup Two (2) Airport Networks in my house. One is a
802.11n only (5 GHz) Network that a 17 MacBook Pro a 15
MacBook Pro connect to.
The other Network is a 802.11n (802.11b/g compatible) that my
MacMini (who runs my entertainment center EyeTV) a iPhone iPod
Touch, and connect to.
I have an Epson TX700W Multi Function printer which is wirelessly
shared across all Networks (it has its own wireless chip).

When I have other computers here they just automatically connect to
the Network that suits their specifications, if they have 802.11n
wireless card installed they connect the faster 802.11n (5GHz)
Network, the ones that don't have a 802.11n card connect to the
802.11n (802.11b/g compatible

3. Bluetooth sharing - I will not talk about this one

Okay first I will talk about the Computer to Computer Network. As
you know this is set up through the airport menu bar.

The features of this network allow you to connect several computers
together wirelessly this network does not share the host computers
Internet connection to share files on this network each machine
needs to have personal file sharing switch on in system preferences
sharing.

This is also where you can change the wireless Name Commonly
referred to as (SSID) of the network by changing the Computer Name
at the top off system preferences sharing.

Okay next Internet Sharing As you know this is set up in system
preferences sharing.

The features of this network allow you to connect several computers
together wirelessly Also allows you to share the host computers

Unlike a computer to computer network You are not required to change
the computer Name in system preferences sharing To change the
wireless network Name Commonly referred to as (SSID) go to System
preferences sharing you will need to go into the Internet sharing
then choose airport options this is where you change the name of the
network (SSID)

This is also where you can change the password and the channel that
the network broadcasts on. Internet sharing works kind like a very
basic wireless router

Also to answer another one your questions any traffic that goes to
the Internet from a computer connected wirelessly has to first go
through the iMac's ethernet and onto your current Ethernet LAN
(Local Area Network) As now you're essentially running 2 LAN's
(Local Area Network's) And ethernet-based one and wireless-based one
you have two because Apple's Internet sharing feature does not
support bridged networking

Hopefully that answers most of your questions if you have any more
don't be afraid to ask

Hi Ronni,

Following your instructions in the PDF you sent me is easy to
follow and helps me create a network, however ..

Are you following the instructions in last PDF I sent you (the more
professional one)?

Yes.

If I have Internet Sharing turned on the 'Create Network' option in
the AirPort status icon in the menu bar is not available.
I have to turn Internet Sharing off to get the 'Create Network'
option to appear.

When I do create a network and then turn on Internet Sharing the
network I just created goes from the AirPort menu and
my computer name appears there instead, the option to disconnect
the new network also goes.

Yes, on the iMac that is probably correct as it is already connected
to your ADSL Network the iMac is sharing it's Internet connection,
the PowerBook connects to the Internet through the 'computer-to-
computer Network.

Just turn off Internet Sharing in System Preferences on the iMac
when you have finished using the 'computer-to-computer' Network.

Whenever I go to turn on Internet sharing I get an Alert saying
Are you sure want to turn on Internet sharing?
If Your computer is connected to a network, turning on Internet
Sharing may affect the network settings of other computers
and disrupt the network. Contact your system administrator before
turning on Internet sharing.

That's correct. It's warning you of what you are about to do.

Don't forget my OS situation is.. 'computer creating network' is
using OS 10.5.8 the other computer is using OS 10.4.11.

I haven't forgotten that.

One thing that bothers me is that the name I give the network isn't
what appears in AirPort, it's my computer name.
As my computer's name is actually my full name and Id rather not
have it broadcast around the place.

Do you mean on the iMac or the PowerBook?
Does the Network Name appear on the PowerBook, which is the computer
that is Joining the 'computer-to-computer' Network?

The PowerBook is the one joining the Network.

My computer name appears in the AirPort menus of both computers.
Sometimes the network name will appear in the Finder on the PB
sometimes the computer name.

I've used IP Scanner (from the PB) and it found the Network name after
one Network setup but not the next.

Like you say below purchasing an Airport Express would probably make
things more predictable, but the occasional basic basic file
transferring

that I'm doing doesn't warrant it.

Though I don't understand how an external Airport Express could make
things any different from the internal AirPort Express in each computer.

Obviously the external is a more capable creature.

Is there a way of changing the computers name?

Also when I do use internet from the other computer (PB) some times
when a webpage loads Little Snitch on the iMac pops up and
as my homemade homepage has heaps of stuff on it, Little Snitch
pops up a dozen times or more. Which means I have to leave the

PB and go and deal with Little Snitch on the iMac.

So you are able to Share the Internet connection from the iMac to
the PowerBook?

Yes.

But the funny thing is yesterday after disconnecting a Network that I
created, and just selecting Internet Sharing on the iMac I was able to
share the internet (and files) using the PB. Today I needed to create
the Network and then select Internet Sharing before I could get the
internet

using the PB.

However I'll persist with it.

From all this I have learnt that to be able to copy files to and from
my 2 computers using AirPort I need turn to on File Sharing and
Internet Sharing.

I think this topic may be getting a little tiresome ;)

Thank you for your patience.

Brian

Oh yes, Little Snitch will be all over something like this ;-)

I've had an occasions when Little Snitch didn't interrupt at all.

You are only using WEP encryption. Computer-to-computer networks are
not compatible with WPA or WPA2 protected networks.
As I've said before you are much safer assured of a Wireless
Network if you purchase an Airport Express and create a 'proper'
Airport Wireless Network with WPA2 encryption.

Just a further query regarding EyeTV .
Which file format should be used when exporting an EyeTV recording
(before burning it to DVD)

1. For best picture quality when watching the DVD on a computer ?
2. For making it watchable on any DVD player AND computer ?
3. For fitting the most content on a DVD ?

Hi Ronni,

Following your instructions in the PDF you sent me is easy to follow
and helps me create a network, however ..

If I have Internet Sharing turned on the 'Create Network' option in
the AirPort status icon in the menu bar is not available.
I have to turn Internet Sharing off to get the 'Create Network' option
to appear.

When I do create a network and then turn on Internet Sharing the
network I just created goes from the AirPort menu and
my computer name appears there instead, the option to disconnect the
new network also goes.

Whenever I go to turn on Internet sharing I get an Alert saying Are
you sure want to turn on Internet sharing?
If Your computer is connected to a network, turning on Internet
Sharing may affect the network settings of other computers
and disrupt the network. Contact your system administrator before
turning on Internet sharing.

Don't forget my OS situation is.. 'computer creating network' is using
OS 10.5.8 the other computer is using OS 10.4.11.

One thing that bothers me is that the name I give the network isn't
what appears in AirPort, it's my computer name.
As my computer's name is actually my full name and Id rather not have
it broadcast around the place.

Is there a way of changing the computers name?

Also when I do use internet from the other computer (PB) some times
when a webpage loads Little Snitch on the iMac pops up and
as my homemade homepage has heaps of stuff on it, Little Snitch pops
up a dozen times or more. Which means I have to leave the

PB and go and deal with Little Snitch on the iMac.

I've had an occasions when Little Snitch didn't interrupt at all.

I've gone through the procedure a few times now but it seems so
unpredictable and wishy-washy and making me unsure how secure
it is that I'm seriously considering just getting an ethernet cable

I see Jaycar is selling a 20mt Cat 5E Patch Lead - Blue for close on
$25.00 which would do fine for length, but speed-wise I don't know.

I'll stick with AirPort for a while though as I only need the 2
computers to communicate occasionally other times I can just turn
AirPort off.

Thank you for the PDF, others unsure about networks would benefit from
it as well.

Cheers

In Preferences/Sharing/Internet it says Internet Sharing On: Sharing

Strange as there is nothing in the PB's ethernet port at all. But I

The PB can't access the internet, I guess I'd need organize it the

the PB is not connected to the internet.

I selected the AirPort icon in the Finder menu bar on my iMac and my

I selected it, then I noticed the network name under Shared in the

I can now copy files to/from either computer.

I suspect it's not the ideal situation but it's working.

Also sometimes turning this Off then on again can fix some problems

Next you could try going to go system preferences -- networking On

Hi Brian,

A couple of things you could check.
1. In Finder Preferences - General. Do you have selected under
Show these items on the Desktop... Connected Servers ?

Yes

2. In System Preferences Sharing - File Sharing click on the
options button do you have Using AFP selected?

and Yes

I seem to remember the remote computer showed up in the side bar of
the Finder and I needed to click Connect is this correct?

Yes, Brian it should show up in the side bar you either click to
connect or in Finder - Under GO in Menu Bar Connect to Server.

What I'm confused about is your comment AirPort status on the PB is
showing 'computer-to-computer' on the iMAC 'On'.
I thought you were sharing over the same Airport Network, but by
that comment you have the PB not connected to your Airport Network
but to a Computer-to-computer Network?

All my computers are connected to my Wireless Network I can
connect share files with all computers.

I think the AirPort status on the PB is showing 'computer-to-
computer' and on the iMAC 'On'. situation may be down to the
different OS versions, if the PB had OS 10.5.8 then it would probably
show 'On' as well. Just guessing..

Keep in mind this network stuff is fairly new to me and I'm probably
not asking the right questions or giving the right answers ;)

I've failed to get the network going again for while now and have had
to disconnect the external HDD from the PB and connect it up to the
iMAC to
shift the files about, I'd rather not move the HDD about the place so
much.

Try the above and, if still having problems, report back with any

The other thing to do to isolate whether the problem is with your

Computer (2) the iMAC the same without the (2) after the name,

In case there were difficulties with the spaces I selected the Edit
button and renamed the PB fred and the iMAB fred2

But still no joy.

I've tried entering the addresses of each such as afp://192.168.1.2
in Connect to Server plus as afp://fred.local or just fred2.local

depending on which computer I'm trying it on.

Entering the address as a number 192.. etc. makes it try for a bit
longer than using say fred.local.

When I tried from the iMAC to connect to the PB (using afp://fred.local)
the initial msg I got was Connection failed The server may not
exist or it is not operational at this time. Check the server name
or IP address and your network connection and try again (I get the
same when trying from the PB)

then the small Connecting to Server window showed ..

The Finder cannot complete the operation because some data in 'afp://fred.local'
could not be read or written. (error code - 36)

What's annoying is some other computer near here is showing up in
Choose a recent Server which automatically appeared out of no where
into the Finder and I couldn't get rid of it until I Re-Started the
PB.

Selecting Browse just opens an empty Network browser window.

To check the server address of either computer go to the Network
pane of
their System Preferences (you can also see the address in the
Sharing pane

of the System Preferences).

Done that

Also remember that even when you are connected for sharing, you
actual file

access will depend on:

- Whether you are connected as the same user
- Whether you are connected as an administrator
- Which folders you have shared

Fact is I not sure what Im connected as, how does one find out?

I created the network on the iMAC setting a WEP PW and connected to
the network with the PB.

Sorry should have mentioned: in Sharing/File Sharing/Shared Folders I
have my Public Folder set for Read Write for myself

Try the above and, if still having problems, report back with any
error

messages from step 3 above.

The other thing to do to isolate whether the problem is with your
wireless
network or sharing set-up is to directly connect the two machines
and check
that the sharing is all working OK over ethernet (since one of the
machines

is a laptop this should be easy).

I've done that recently when using the PB with a film scanner in the
same room as the iMAC. I had the PB connected
to my 4 port hub to get access with the iMAC to the HDD connected to
the PB where the scanned pics were going
No problems arose. The PB showed up in the Finder sidebar and it
connected when I clicked on it.

Thanks

Brian

Here's my set up ..

iMAC 24 it has internal a Wireless Card	Air Port Extreme, and it's

AirPort Card Information:

Wireless Card Type: AirPort Extreme (0x14E4, 0x8C)
  Wireless Card Locale: Asia Pacific
Wireless Card Firmware Version: Broadcom BCM43xx 1.0 (5.10.91.19)
Current Wireless Network: wireless network not available

Current Wireless Network: wireless network not available

*** I'm trying to get so that I can copy files from one to the other
using the Finder. ***

I achieved this a couple of months ago but can't remember how and I
can't find the info that helped me.
I hesitate to add this because I may be getting my wires crossed here
but I think it involved using Terminal, maybe ssh.

I can't find Bridge Mode anywhere in my iMac AirPort or Network
Preferences I've tried

entering it in the Preference search in the top right but nothing shows.

And AirPort Utility reports that it's unable to find any Apple
wireless devices.

If I try turning on Internet Sharing I get an alert saying If your
computer is connected to a network, turning on Internet sharing may
affect the network settings etc.

If I do it anyway Little Snitch tells me natd wants to connect to
0.0.0.0 on DIVERT port 2560 (labrat) so I cancel doing it.

I've selected everything in the Finder's Preferences both General

Your set up would perhaps be something like that (apologies of

Netcomm Router connects to Airport via Ethernet.
iMac connects to either router with Ethernet (or wireless).
Laptop connects wireless to Airport (doesn't need a computer to

Log into Airport and ensure that IP address configuration is set to
Bridge Mode, thus allowing all computers to be on the same

File sharing turned on both machines.
Once that is all set, then everything should be set to see each other,

I've seen a few of these mixed IP networks on my travels and
normally gone

Once it's set up, it'll just work all the time :)

Hope that all makes sense and helps.

Thanks for the reply Ronni.

Mine is an old Denon DCD-755AR, I don't know what his is.

Easy PDF text selection.

Here’s an enhancement that exemplifies the pursuit of perfection.
When using a PDF viewer such as Preview, have you ever tried to copy
text from a PDF document that has more than one column? It’s almost
impossible. Instead of selecting only the text you want, your cursor
selects all the text across the page, so you end up with a mix of
words from every column.

Mac OS X Snow Leopard applies sophisticated artificial intelligence
algorithms to fix the problem. It analyzes the layout of each page
in the PDF to identify columns of text. So when you use the cursor
to select text, you get only the words you want. That’s a real time-
saver.

Epson Stylus PHOTO RX650 All-In-One compatibility with Snow Leopard

2009-09-01 Thread Brian Scott

Hi,

It took me while to get the Epson software working when I changed from
Tiger to Leopard so

I'm somewhat hesitant to go to Snow Leopard.

There doesn't appear to be much movement toward updating it's software
including Epson Scan
on http://www.epson.com/ or http://www.epson.com.au/ though I'm
probably being a bit impatient

considering the complexity of printer software.

Can anyone who has the RX650 that has gone to Snow Leopard report
whether or not they are having

any difficulty printing and scanning with it.

I'd like to be Rosetta free if possible when I do update to 10.6

Thanks

Re: What's using my external hard drive preventing it from ejecting?

2009-08-30 Thread Brian Scott

Thank you Daniel.

The Terminal advice 'hdiutil eject -force' from your link did the trick,
I applied it when the drive was in Power Down mode so nothing was
accessing it at the time.

After ejecting it I checked the drive again with About This Mac, it
came out of Power Down mode
but didn't re-mount then went into Idle mode, I guess that had to
happen for About This Mac to identify it.

It's info was the same just no Available: GB's and no Mount Point:

But it leaves me wondering if I have formatted it wrong for the system
to think it's being used when it's not.

Cheers

Brian

Hi Brian

Some background applications (like Virus scanners, Time Machine, File
Sharing, and Spotlight etc) can be using the drive without showing
they

are using it.
If you open up Activity Monitor (in Macintosh HD/Applications/
Utilities) it

will show a list of all running Applications.
If you know which one is using the drive, or showing access to the
drive,

you can kill the process which then releases the drive.
If you're not sure, the easiest way is to shutdown or restart then
you can

unplug the drive.

You can also try ejecting it from Disk Utility as well. (in Macintosh
HD/Applications/Utilities)

Another option is to Force Quit the Finder, if you're not running
anything

else.
(You can either do this from the Apple Menu and choose Force Quit
or hold
down the Option Key and Click and hold on the Finder icon. You will
then get

a pop up menu with the Option Relaunch

Other options you can also do are the some terminal commands which are
here:-
http://www.macyourself.com/2009/08/07/fixing-os-xs-the-disk-is-in-use-and-c
ould-not-be-ejected-error/

Something in there should hopefully help.

Kind Regards
Daniel

Controlling Errors shown in Console Log List

So I tried finding out using System Preferences/Software Update/

I guess that update will remain a mystery.

However looking at the Log List under All Messages in Console there

External DVD burner for my iMac?

My external DVD burner is about to get the sack so I thought I'd check
with the group
to see if there a preferred model to hook up to my 24 iMac 3 Ghz, OS
10.5.7

Perhaps one that lasts a bit longer than the couple of years I got out
of this one a Pioneer DVR-111D.

Suggestions will be appreciated.

They're streaming in Windows Media Format. The stream will play in
QuickTime Player if you have the Flip4Mac Windows Media Components
installed, but the stream will not play in iTunes.
Apple does not support WMA, that's why. WMA is a Microsoft-
proprietary format. The only way WMA plays on a Mac at all is with
the addition of third-party software. Apple supports almost all
industry-standard formats, but it's not unreasonable for them not to
support proprietary formats, particularly when it's almost certain
that Apple would have to pay licensing fees to use the format.

Because iTunes is able to handle M3U's which point to a streaming
source, and the above does.
Quicktime can handle M3U (MP3 Playlist files) but not M3U's which
point to a streaming source.

Well, that's how I understand it, I could be wrong.

ac1.streaming.net.nz/trn-radiosport-wlg from the file

which wouldn't work either.

It's in the back of my mind that I may need to set up some method of
recording from 'radio-sport-wellington.asx'
and getting it to load at a certain time of the day if I need to go
out when the game is on but am not sure how to do that.

Hi Ronni (and all)

I have a radioSHARK that I use here. I've also set them up for

well. I find that it works really well and I'm quite happy with the

working and

what something different to listen to I have it running.
I've also got a few people that use them to record things off Radio
National
(I think) and find it quite good for those as well. A couple of
times I've
left it running and gone out and then come back and scrolled back
to listen

to something I missed,..so quite good for that too.
So overall, I'm pretty happy with it. I find the reception works
well (in

Huntingdale) and the quality is pretty good.
Griffin products are generally very good I find.

Oh, and yes you are correct with the eBay, it's the older version 1
that
doesn't do Internet Radio which version2 does. You can't get the
older
Version1 anymore from what I've seen on my wholesalers website,
just the v2,

so they may be selling off older ones.

And I can't say I've had the problems he's had with it in the
review. There
are a couple of quirky things with it, like the changing
stations, so I

agree with that, but overall I haven't had a problem with reception,
crashing, or poor performance, and from what my customers tell me,
neither
have they. They all seem quite happy with it. (Mine runs on a
MacPro 3Ghz,

and my clients mostly have fairly new iMac's)

Hope that helps.

Dealing with PVR files from set top box HDD

2009-03-25 Thread Brian Scott

Hi,

My set top box has died so I put the 250 HDD out of it into a Lacie box.

It mounts OK on my iMac (OS 10.5.6).

There are 195 files on it alternatively titled .INF, .PVR

e.g.

0ABC2000.INF
0ABC2000.PVR
0ABC2001.INF
0ABC2001.PVR
0ABCA001.INF
..etc

And one 32 KB file called GROUPS00.GRP which contains HOTOG!
(MAudÄlÿ

The 32 KB .INF files have the tv channel and the recording's name plus
alt chars and some have FileJumpPosTag.

None of the .PVR files are over 1.87 GB so some shows are probably
split.

I can convert the PVR files using VisualHub but I was wondering if
there other ways of dealing with these files.

An irregular topic I must admit but maybe someone has some experience
with this.

Thanks

Re: Safari faulure

2009-02-10 Thread Brian Scott

Hi,

Safari used to crash on me also but this clue below (I think from
Ronda) got it going again..

Do you have any third party plugins installed that might be
incompatible?
Safari Enhancer (which only works with Safari 2). Asking Safari
Enhancer to restore default settings will allow Safari 3 to launch.

If you have other third party add ons.
Try moving this file onto your Desktop and retrying:

Hard drive - /Library/InputManagers/SIMBL/

That location applies to all user accounts and is often the cause of
crashes with Safari 3 (it's a third party tool used by some developers
to add extra functionality to Apple applications)

Input Managers and other plug-ins from third parties can do as much
harm as good. They use a security loophole to reach right into your
applications' code and change that code as the application starts up.
If you have installed 10.4.11 and Safari is crashing, the very first
thing to do is clear out your InputManagers folders (both in your own
Library and in the top-level Library), log out and log back in, and
try again.

This was back in March 2008.

Cheers

Happy New Year all,

When I had my 19 Acer as the second monitor with my MacBook on start-

many different possibilities and clicking sounds before settling on my

Now the Acer is attached to my new iMac it won't go to my preference
setting I have to reset it in
preferences each time to the same calibrated setting that used to work
(eventually) with the MacBook.

I can make guesses as to what's going on, e.g. the new driver doesn't
bother with old CRTs anymore.

Hi Pat,

You can register for spam submission with the Australian

They are closed until 1st Jan.

They will give you an address key to forward the spam to.

What happens then I'm not sure, a bit like waving your hand at the

1. Go to the Junk Mail preference pane. Mail Preferences Junk Mail

It reduces the price for a 1kW system that would supply 25% of an

Not too shabby. Anyone else come across any better deals?

Hi Brian,

Do you have any third party plugins installed that might be
incompatible?
Safari Enhancer (which only works with Safari 2). Asking Safari
Enhancer to restore default settings will allow Safari 3 to launch.

If you have other third party add ons.
Try moving this file onto your Desktop and retrying:

Hard drive - /Library/InputManagers/SIMBL/

That location applies to all user accounts and is often the cause
of crashes with Safari 3 (it's a third party tool used by some
developers to add extra functionality to Apple applications)

Input Managers and other plug-ins from third parties can do as much
harm as good. They use a security loophole to reach right into your
applications' code and change that code as the application starts
up. If you have installed 10.4.11 and Safari is crashing, the very
first thing to do is clear out your InputManagers folders (both in
your own Library and in the top-level Library), log out and log
back in, and try again.

Tiger 10.4.11 uses Safari 3.0.4.

Welcome back Safari!

I removed /Library/InputManagers/SIMBL rebooted and now have Safari
working.

Now to get the build up of months of bookmarks from Firefox into Safari.

Re: Problem burning avi to DVD using Toast

Hi Steven,

you don't appear to have a reply so far so I'll tell what I can.

Toast isn't referring to the free disk space of the DVD but hard disk
space required.

Toast makes temporary files in Documents/Roxio Converted Items/.

If you have converted avi's in the past you can regain some disk
space by removing

the files in Documents/Roxio Converted Items/.

I don't know if Toast is terribly accurate in it's figures it
recently requested 9 gig free space when

there was actually 16 gig free.

There's also VisualHub that will convert avi's to DV or DVD but won't
give you a start menu. It

doesn't seem to leave temporary files anywhere.

Once you pay the US$30 and enter your QT Pro Serial number, some

include the option of copying and pasting in multiple tracks of audio

to each other and at any resolution and frame rate you wish without
re-compression if you so desire.

I use it regularly with screen recordings that have been captured at
1024x768 with the Motion-JPEG codec at 5 frames per second alongside
talking head video footage running at 25 fps at 320x240 resolution
using the H.264 codec with text or graphics tracks superimposed on
top or alongside. It is as easy as copying the new track and then
adding (rather than pasting) it on top of the first, then calling
up the properties dialog (command-J), clicking on the appropriate
video track and then the visual settings tab and changing the
coordinates of the selected video track to move and re-size it.

The final movie can end up with multiple tracks running at different
frame rates and using totally different codecs and thus avoid re-
compression and the generational quality losses that would normally
occur.

That'll do me.

Thanks for your help

Thanks Bob but I've been there a couple of times but there's no

It's where I eventually got Note for Mac OS users - MAC OS 10.2.8
or later version has native support for USB 2.0 including VIA's
VT6202.

and you poke about you also find Support for the VIA Vectro
VT6202 is built into Microsoft Windows XP and Windows 2000

I'm buying a used 4 port PCMCIA card that's been working in a
Powerbook off a wamugger this evening so hopefully this driver
frustration will go away.

Thanks

Hi Brian ,

They were quite tricky sucking you in to the other links .. me
too ..

but clicking in the right spot produced a download of that driver
for G4 including for Tiger

Have mailed you a copy direct .. about 900Kb .. hope your mail box
can receive it

Checking for USB drivers

2007-09-12 Thread Brian Scott

Hi,

I have purchased a 4 port USB PCMCIA card for my Powerbook 1.25

It has the VIA chipset and doesn't work.

I have been using another 4 port PCMCIA card that is virtually the
same but it has the NEC chipset.

The NEC chipset has worked well but 2 of the ports have become flaky
so needs replacing.

I've check the VIA driver page and found Note for Mac OS users - MAC
OS 10.2.8 or later

version has native support for USB 2.0 including VIA's VT6202.

VT6202 is mentioned in the limited documentation that came with it.

I suspect Apple may have dropped support for the VIA but not the NEC.

Is there way of checking if my Mac still supports the VIA chipset?

Thank you

Brian Scott

Re: Printers

2007-07-03 Thread Brian scott

Hi Ken,

I've been using one for printing on my DVD's for several months now.

The Epson software is adequate for what I want for printing DVD's
but if it
doesn't suit you, there are other applications to choose from such as
Disc Cover

http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/29266

Apart from the occasional paper print and scan that's all I've used
it for.

At times it will report a paper jam while trying to print a DVD or it
say the
DVD tray isn't in correctly when there's nothing really wrong but it
does the job quite well.

And once while it had the original cartridges in it blocked up
temporarily but it soon cleared

didn't do it again and hasn't done so since I changed to new cartridges.

Apart from those very minor gripes I'm quite pleased with it.

Hopefully someone will comment on the RX650's ability to scan film as
I've not tried that yet.

Hope that's some help

Brian

I've found if you select/highlight these illegible texts as though
you are about to cut paste sometimes helps

This is a gripe as much as a query!

Why do webmakers persist in using unsuitable fonts? See for example:-

Pastel shades or light grey on a slighter darker grey may look
nice, but they make it very difficult for seniors to read. Do other
people have the same problem?

I hope none of you design pages like that one!

Re: Printing to dvd cd

2006-12-30 Thread Brian scott

Hi Tom,

I purchased an Epson Stylus RX650 Multifunction Photo Printer off
ebay for printing on DVD CD's.

It's been working well over time I've done 100 odd DVD's without a
glitch. And still haven't changed a cartridge.

Doesn't need any drivers of course on the Mac. The software is easy
peasy.

It can take camera memory cards and scan film/slides and has
PictBridge although it's probably more activity than you need (me to
it seems as I've never used these things yet).

Expect to pay around $400 for one I guess.

more about it here http://www.epson.com.au/products/multifunctional/
stylusphotorx650.asp

Cheers

Brian

I ask this one a while back but once again I am on the hunt for a
decent printer that will print to dvd cd.

Can any one suggest which one

Security researchers to target Apple in January

2006-12-20 Thread Brian scott

more here ..
http://news.com.com/2061-10793_3-6144833.html?
part=rsstag=2547-1_3-0-5subj=news

The folks that brought us the month of kernel bugs in November are
planning to focus
squarely on Apple during January, according to The Washington Post's
Brian Krebs.

Two researchers, Kevin Finisterre and the pseudonymous LMH, plan to
point out a flaw
each day during January targeting Mac OS X or applications for that
operating system,
Krebs reported. As with the month of kernel bugs project conducted by
LMH in November,
they also don't plan to let Apple know about the vulnerabilities
before they publish
them, which doesn't sit right with some members of the security
community. The
security holes will all be ones that haven't yet been advertised,
according to the report.

Hi,

I've tried 2 different USB hubs but they both made my computer do
unpredictable things.

Should we assume that those were Hubs powered from a separate Power
Supply ?

Bob

Yes both were powered.

The kind of problems they led to were difficulty in shutting the
computer down I had to remove the battery a couple of times

to get it out of a freeze.

And starting it up again - several pushes on the start button
sometime got it started.

Those troubles don't happen when neither of the hubs are connected.

I should mention the type of hubs I guess - they are a 6 port Swann
and a Belkin 6 port.

I'm reluctant to hook them up again as they both gave similar
worrying problems.

I'm also worried that a PC Card with USB ports way present the same
problems

I'm thinking if I could find a Bluetooth enabled Trackball (I love my
trackball) I'd be able to free up one of the built in USB ports.

Brian

Is there a PC(MIA) Card that works this Powerbook?

Thanks

Brian
