Is there any documentation on using amdump_client? Nothing comes up
when searching the wiki other than mentions in release notes and the
man page isn't proving very helpful.

Would it make sense to span the largest dles on different run?
eg. if runspercycle is 5, then span the 5 largest dles on 5 different run?

Did you set maxpromoteday? You should not.
Amanda never promote a DLE if the sum will be larger that the means, eg.
it will never promote your biggest dle, you havr to do it manually with
'amadmin force'.
If oyu want that I look at it, then you post more informations, the
amdump.? log
It is probably a corruption of one of the log.datastamp.* file
